Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon is slated to undergo hip surgery and will face a “long-term” absence, general manager Perry Minasian announced to the Angels beat this morning (link via Sam Blum of The Athletic).
Rendon, 34, is entering the sixth season of a seven-year, $245MM contract that has proved a catastrophic misstep for the Angels organization. He played 52 of 60 possible games during his first season with the Halos and looked every bit like the star they’d hoped to sign, slashing .286/.418/.497 in 232 plate appearances. It’s been all downhill from there.
Over the past four seasons, Rendon has played 205 of a possible 648 games (31.6%) and posted an anemic .231/.329/.336 batting line. Dating back to 2021 alone, Rendon has had a staggering 12 different IL placements. This hip procedure will account for his 13th. He’s missed time with a near-interminable list of injuries which, in order, reads as follows: knee contusion, hamstring strain, hip impingement, wrist inflammation, wrist surgery, groin strain, wrist contusion, shin contusion, hamstring strain, back inflammation, oblique strain — and now hip surgery.
As Minasian explains, Rendon had a setback during his offseason rehab work, leading to the upcoming operation. Even prior to that, Minasian had stated that after the past four seasons, Rendon would not simply be handed the third base job on account of his contract. The Angels were open to everyday additions at the hot corner throughout the winter and reportedly looked into potential trades for Nolan Arenado, Alec Bohm and Eugenio Suarez. The recently signed Yoan Moncada to a one-year, $5MM deal. With Rendon out indefinitely, Moncada’s already apparent status as the team’s primary third baseman is only further solidified.
There’s no exact timetable for Rendon’s return, but at this point it’s fair to wonder whether he’ll make it back to the field in an Angels uniform. He’s been injured more often than not since signing in Anaheim and now faces the prospect of rehabbing from a major surgery in his mid-30s. He’s signed through the 2026 season, bringing him close to the point at which teams start to feel comfortable cutting bait on underwater contracts.
Given Moncada’s own lengthy injury history, the Angels may have to patch things together at the hot corner this year. Utility infielder Kevin Newman signed a big league deal early in the offseason and could see frequent time there. He may also get some early run at shortstop with Zach Neto still mending from shoulder surgery. Neto said today (via MLB.com’s Rhett Bollinger) that he recently got some “good news” and is ahead of schedule in his recovery, but it’s still not a given that he’ll be ready for Opening Day. He’s hitting off a tee but is not yet cleared to throw.
Among the notable non-roster invitees in Angels camp who could factor into the infield mix — especially early — are Tim Anderson, J.D. Davis, Carter Kieboom and Yolmer Sanchez.
Of course
Good moves for him and Moncada, just need someone to start the other 120 games now.
Is Malingerer his middle name?
Either that or Davis
That’s not his name. His middle name is Michael. Injuries are tough. Rendon is not.
injury settlement so he can retire? Not sure if there is insurance this has been as bad as the Yankees’ Ellsbury deal.
dewey – This has been much worse than Ellsbury.
At least Ells put up a 9.8 WAR in 520 games with the Yanks.
Rendon has only a 3.7 WAR in just 257 games.
Fever, I stand corrected!
No, his middle name is Boras
For every Bartolo Colon or Vladimir Guerrero that panned out for them, there have been bad signings like Rendon, Steve Finley, Gary Mathews Jr, Vernon Wells, even Albert Pujols (in the final years of his Contract).
Gang – How can you possibly believe Hamilton was not a bad signing??? He should have been right there with Rendon at the top of your list!
Steve Finley (shrug) was a one year contract for a 40 year old player.
josh Hamilton….c.j.Wilson
Larry – I was being kind in not including Maurice Samuel, only because he was somewhat productive his first two seasons. But certainly it was still a bad contract overall.
This is good for the team. They have insurance for things like this. You should be mad at the team for not dropping this dude instead. He publicly came out and said he has no love for the game anymore. I wish I could tell my boss I hate my job with zero consequences. lol
Rendon and Embid can get some golf in
Both their nicknames are “street clothes”.
Please don’t insult Anthony Davis by appropriating his nickname for other players.
That nickname goes back to at least Rennie Stennet. Time honored nickname. Anthony Davis is beside me point.
This news was first revealed to me when I saw Rendon limping to his car after a shopping spree at Arizona Mills in Tempe
I first read it appropriately on the toilet.
All that money “well spent”… Good Rendon in heaven…
@julyn82001 – On the plus side, his contract includes some bonuses for World Series MVP, LCS MVP and All Star selections. Whew! Good thing Arte can be happy about not paying that cuz that was bound to happen ummm… never?
Worst contract of all time? Rendon #1, maybe Zito #2
So odd to see.
Its not, they wanted to cut him almost certainly, but offered him this to save face. Its funny org dosent extend dignity to the fanbase but the guy who stole 200m gets it by the wheelbarrow.
I feel like Rendon will be pretty excited about this news.
I feel like this guy has no desire to ever play again. If he has such a bad hip injury, why not address it in the offseason? Instead he waits for Spring Training to start and then comes up with a long term injury? I really hope Arte insured his contract as it’s almost criminal what he has done since he signed with Anaheim. If there is no insurance on his deal, Anaheim should cut him loose and just eat the money. He’s apparently not a good teammate either so what is the sense of holding on to this guy any longer? Worst contract in MLB by far, and maybe Top 3 in MLB history.
I just read another article that this is the result of a 2024 hip surgery rehab gone wrong, so at least he did address it previously, but I truly believe he has no interest in playing baseball ever again. It’s shameful.
It’s entirely possible that his long-term game plan is to suffer a baseball-related injury, so he reported to Spring Training, started putting on baseball pants, and then fell over grabbing his hip and boom – covered for another year.
Welp, I truly doubt anyone else here had a long-term absence by Anthony Rendon on their 2025 bingo card…
AKA “Free Space”.
Poor Anthony. Angels can trade for DJL now for 6 baseballs and 6 In and Out cheeseburgers.
TBH 6 In N Out burgers are an overpay. They’re incredible.
Personally I’d rather keep the burgers.
Hahahahaha of course expected nothing less.
“Listen dude, I’m not really feelin it for 25, but feel free to check back in 26. But whatever you do, make sure you keep sending those checks.” Ahahahahahaha!
Anything to avoid work. Dude this guy cannot stand he’s a baseball player anymore. He does not care. It’s awful.
How do YOU know he doesn’t care? Connected with you in some way personally? Doubt it.
Doug – this has been well known for a while.
cbsnews.com/losangeles/news/angels-infielder-antho…
He played well enough to get paid with Washington, and then after securing the bag, his interest in playing baseball has become non-existent.
He’s basically said that. “Only thing I care about is family”. Or something very close to that. Either way, everyone got the hint. Mission accomplished once he suckered them into a long term obligation.
Never been interested again in baseball the minute he won a a ring. You don’t need to. But if your going to steal money don’t be an idiot about it to the people and organizations that cut your checks.
@dsett75. also before that said the season was too long. He kept putting his foot in his mouth, until he said no habla English.
I don’t wanna go there w Rendon. It’s a dangerous slope. The man is awfully talented but it’s a desire at this point. Baseball has named the game. We can be mad all we want but Rendon is playing by the rules. It is awful stuff though some of his public statements here by him. Imagine if he were in n Arizona today. Yikes!
Definitely not a secret he’s 100% been public and open on this but baseball doesn’t pay you to be Gil meche anymore. They pay you to be Bobby Bonilla.
That’s not fair to Bobby. He was only helpings the Wilpons out.
Mad respect for bobbly Bonilla day. I check my mail box every July 1st too.
Same, but that’s just to check for Canada Day cards.
Feel for ya what’s going on up north. It’s no better in the 50 states today man. It’s baseball here though not politics.
He literally said he’s been thinking about retiring for the last 10 years. He only shows up for the paycheque.
So do you.
My deadbeat dad also had to face a “long term absence” when he stepped out to get some “hip surgery” at the corner store
TMI
No. NEI- not enough info.
tell me more… tell me more…
I’ll tell you more when he gets back. It’s been 35 years, so hopefully he’ll be off the “IL” soon
I hope you didn’t go through dozens of men like other women with daddy issues. Then figured you might as well change your name to “Porkins” J/k, j/k
Sorry Ann , the hurt lasts forever
Did you get very far? Like, does he have a car?
Can only assume he fell backwards off the bench
I know he has made some jerk comments, but this guy can’t catch a break. As a baseball fan, I wish we had been able to see prime Anthony Rendon for the last five years.
He doesn’t do himself any favors off the field tho.
Exactly. I don’t ever remember Prince Fielder being a dick every time the opportunity presented itself.
He was so much fun to watch with the Nats. He never gave off these awful indignant vibes back then. Dude went from being a happy-go-lucky borderline HOF candidate to the most unlikable and unproductive player with a blockbuster contract in the game in just two seasons.
Pain and suffering can make a person hard to deal with.
There was no “ prime Rendon.” He was good for a couple plus years, period. He made sure he caught all the breaks. On the IL 13 times in five years?
@bx
This! Even if you take everything he has said at 100% face value (which based on the comments, most people have), do you really think he hates baseball so badly that he’d rather have his body worn down so badly that he’s getting a surgery before the age of 35 that is more common with senior citizens?
And I can’t entirely speak for Anthony, because for all I know, even if he was healthier and playing better than ever, he’d still come off like he hates baseball, but I rather enjoy my job both for work and as a hobby. But if it sent me to the hospital every six months (and in some cases required surgery), my interviews would probably not be filled with joy and how much I love what I do either.
I’m not even surprised anymore.
I would say there is a really good chance that he nevers plays another game of professional baseball…
This is starting to feel like david wright from an injury perspective
That’s not fair to David Wright.
Thats why i qualified it with “injury perspective” ..the missed time and large contracts fit regardless of what you think of the person
Perspective is important… the sky is “blue”, the sun “rises” in the east, Anthony Rendon(e) is in the process of collecting 245 million bones to “play” baseball.
Yeah but that’s an insult to David Wright.
Wright tried
Is this good news for the Angels in terms of contract $ getting covered by insurance?
Wright is much less selfish. He had legitimate bad luck. I think half of this is Rendon just doesn’t want to play anymore, but he wants that money. He’s all but said that with some of his comments.
To paraphrase Keven Meaney, “that’s not Wright!”
Wright would need 2 hours to get his body into shape pre-game to get through 9 innings. Couldn’t be a more apples and oranges comp.
Shocking
Impeccable timing.
Color me shocked
Well, well, well. Look what we have here
OMG wow
I know he has made some questionable comments about loving baseball, but this guy can’t catch a break. As a baseball fan, I wish we had been able to see prime Anthony Rendon over the last five seasons.
seriously. Tony “Two Bags” Rendon had the sweetest swing and made hitting look so effortlessly. Wish we had more of it.
Nailed it. The Nationals don’t win the WS without Rendon. He and Soto put on a hitting clinic in the playoffs. Thank you Anthony… you will always have a seat at the dinner table with this Nationals fan!
Good for Nats fans. That’s not the Rendon we know around here. As far as angels fans are concerned this dude is the scum of the earth lol
if he is like the person who calls out sick when they aren’t, except for weeks/months at a time.
It’s one thing to be legit injured (Kershaw, Acuna, etc) another to have lingering contusions. lol
Dude is a bum as a player and a person.
All the coolest people have hip surgery.
But when you’re ageing, it might not be a good look.
Honestly sad at this point. Should just retire, his body can’t handle anymore. I wonder if baseball has disabled player exception like NBA they could use.
They have a 60 day IL. Rendon will not count toward the 26 man or 40 roster.
@mustard tiger. Yeah i rather him sit out early, because i think Anderson, and Davis could opt out. I guess that’s why moancada was signed.
Arenado to the rescue.
Or Bregman.
Gaak! Someone get the phone away from Arte! Boras on line 1 with an offer for Bregman Arte just can’t refuse… All Bregman wants from Arte is a liiiiittle more than Tony Two (hundred forty-five million) Bags Rendon(e). No probllemo… you can trust me this time Arte.
Weird how people celebrate someone’s injury. I don’t get it.
If the Angels have insurance on him they may be celebrating. No one is glad he is hurt. Most of the comments are that no one is surprised by the news or his extended absence again.
I feel bad for him and the team, but this is so routine at this point that I forgot he was even playing anymore.
Why comment that you aren’t surprised that someone is hurt? That’s weird.
I don’t think you forgot he was playing. I think you made that up.
He plays in so few games, I’m not surprised that some people don’t realize he’s still in the league.
No, I literally forgot he was still playing and for what team.
Because he’s our MLB punching bag. Just like you are our MLBTR punching bag.
Sounds like you don’t need a punching bag you need counseling. Good luck being you.
The world is cruel. Either don’t invite the cruelty or develop a thick skin.
BITA calling someone on here a liar and telling them they “need counseling.” Know thyself and water is wet.
Dude you are talking trash about a stranger you will never know or meet about an injury. What kind of weirdo does that?
Bro. We’re in the comments section of mlbtr. That’s pretty much exactly what this is for in case you’re not aware of that yet
Rendon is probably celebrating that he won’t have to play baseball and can stay home with his family and “rehab.”
You are probably celebrating he’s hurt because you are jealous and weird.
Because it’s probably more of a case of him just not wanting to play anymore but wanting the money. He’s basically all but said as much
You think he just likes having surgeries?
You probably are an idiot…..
He won’t pay a dime for his surgery and then gets paid to spend the summer with his family. I think he likes that. There are millions of people who would choose that option.
Listen to yourself. Won’t pay a dime for his surgery? It’s surgery stupid it’s not a trip to Disneyland. This isn’t some elaborate scheme so he doesn’t have to play. What a stupid thing to say.
He said on the record that baseball isn’t really a high priority and that the baseball season is too long.
He also said he’s been thinking about retiring for the last 10 years and really only does it because of the paycheck.
The only reason he has the surgeries is because if he doesn’t at least go through the motions of trying to get back on the field they can void his contract.
You made that last part up. You completely made it up in your attempt to justify your stupidity.
Hey, people go by what the person has shown. You’re just playing the holier than thou attitude while hoping at least a couple repliers pat you on the back because nobody should be sticking up for this guy after some of the stuff he’s said.
You are the one pandering to the crowd here not me. I know what he has said. It doesn’t mean he wants to be hurt. One guy is saying he’s having surgery by choice thats as dumb as it gets.
Surgery is awesome! You can watch TV, eat Twinkies, get people to sign your bandages., etc.
It’s impossible to void a contract for a player not playing well. It’s a lot easier to simply whiff at every pitch and boot everything hit to you until you get your unconditional release (and keep your money and get to go home when not claimed), than to trick doctors into approving an unnecessary surgery.
Playing MLB-caliber baseball is not an easy thing and it takes a lot of effort to even be as mediocre at it as Rendon is on the rare occasions he’s healthy. So I think he’s somewhat trying, out of a sense of obligation or pride or something, even though he doesn’t really care or enjoy it.
He probably scheduled the surgery for the eve of ST back in September. Helluva coincidence if not.
RENDON WHILE PACKING FOR ST: “Seems like I’m forgetting something. Oh yeah, hip surgery!!”
I didn’t say he was making up the injury. I’m saying he’s probably glad because now he gets to spend more time with his family and doesn’t have to play baseball this year. There are millions of workers who would gladly have hip surgery if it meant they didn’t need to work, got to spend more time with their families, and still got paid.
I don’t think anyone is popping bottles over this news. I do think that bias confirmation & the satisfaction it provides are a real thing. And Rendon just keeps confirming
I think you are making things up to justify your poor behavior and the satisfaction it provides you.
What a shock!
It’s even funnier the fifth time!
This contract doesn’t get nearly enough play in the worst of all time conversation
Didn’t waste any time this season
BREAKING NEWS.
Anthony Rendon facing yet another lengthy absence for burning his tongue drinking hot chocolate at his home yesterday morning at around 8:17am.
Ooh, a timely user name change. We will be expecting daily status updates now.
I needed a good chuckle this morning and this was it. Maybe with all the free time he’ll have, he can join us here in the comments section and offer his two cents on things…hahahaha!!!
Do they really write this piece from scratch every year? Or do they just copy and paste from last year, then edit the name of the injury/surgery?
On a yearly timer.
Bum.
Whew, that was close. He almost had to play in a spring training game.
He probably scheduled the surgery for the eve of ST back in September
Almost like he carefully orchestrated the timing to be as close to having to go to work…
career is done
Baseball season has officially begun!
I was worried that it was cancer of the cervix.
Careful, Roddy, that’s a bannable comment.
Don’t be so sensitive, Virtue signaling is so passe.
Oh here we go…tell you what tell us about yourself so we can find something to mock.
Just a fair warning. I pushed the envelope a couple of times about cancer and was banned because of it.
I’m 68 years old. Never had a surgery or ducked out on an obligation or contract.
@Bucket #6
Is it Okay to say a player is perceived as a “clubhouse cancer”??
Whaaaat, he said he was worried!! It’s not like he wished it. I giggled reading it by the way.
Only a “lengthy absence”? I think Under will win the Over/Under bet.
What a waste of space
One of the most unlikable people in all of sports but at least he has hundreds of millions of dollars.
Thoughts and prayers… At least he can spend more time doing the things he likes.
He’s probably done everything with as much free time as he’s had. Now he can go and start teraforming Mars for us because he ain’t playing this year, I bet. In fact, I bet he scheduled the surgery for the eve of ST back in September, lol.
As a Nats fan, I’m sorry to see this additional sad development for Rendon. To all those chortling about it, I’d bet he had hoped offseason rest would forestall this surgery right before the season. Have a heart.
He brought all the hate on himself. Watch his interviews and listen to his comments. His heart isn’t in it anymore.
Rendon also attacked a fan in Oakland because he’s a nutjob and cares not about his reputation or of his team mates or the organization that hired him, Hard to root for someone who is so self-centered.
There are people in this country with actual injuries and disabilities who would love to work and are constantly passed over for jobs and promotions, and when they do work are mocked relentlessly for their low pay…
But we’re all supposed to have a heart for the hundred millionaire who’s openly admitted he doesn’t care.
I bet he scheduled the surgery for the eve of ST back in September.
The Jacoby Ellsbury of infielders
If he has half a backbone, he’ll retire and forfeit his remaining salary. But judging by his character, I doubt he will.
Sounds nice in principle. But in reality, no one in baseball really does that anymore. The ones who do announce their retirements do so only after negotiating a buy-out with the team.
No reason for him to give up any money. Guaranteed contract play or not
Would you?
If I was in Rendon’s position, having accumulated millions of dollars and not being interested in playing anymore, then I sure would. I’m sure I don’t speak for everyone, but just my opinion.
We’d never look at being a $200 mil MLB player and hating our job as if we clean toilets. So, hard to fathom that scenario for most of us.
His career splits tell the whole story:
Nationals: 7 seasons, 916 GP, 30.0 bWAR
Angels: 5 seasons, 257 GP, 3.7 bWAR
Sadly the Angels are where careers go to die.
Biggest waste of contract ever Just need to cut bait with him. Needs to be poster child for next CBA that something needs done with these types of contracts
Chris Davis: -2.7 WAR, 2118 PA with OPS+ of 80 for $161M.
Stephen Strasburg: -0.5 WAR, 31 IP, ERA+ of 61 for $245M.
Rendon: +3.7 WAR, 1095 PA with OPS+ of 100, total contract $245M.
Now I’m not defending Rendon’s return on investment, but his contract has been far more successful than either of those other two from around the same time period.
It’ll never happen, but I agree. A Voided if you’re utterly worthless clause or something
I feel shocked!!
Rendon to the long-term IL means baseball is officially back!
I believe Trout will also be injured most of the season. I hope for Angel fans that he has a very healthy season for a change. Not in any way comparing Trout to Rendon other than being injured a lot. I am a Giants fan and I hope Trout is healthy. So does almost every fan. But it just seems inevitable with him. It would be great to see a full season of a healthy Trout.
Doctors/Angels medical staff: “You can rehab it carefully and work a program that allows you to get back on or stay in the field, even if just as a DH, or you can have hip surgery and lose most of if not the whole season.”
Rendon: “I’d like you to schedule me for the first hip this year, the other hip in time to have to miss the rest of this season and all of next season.”
Staff: “That’s the rest of the duration of your Angels contract…”
Rendon: “And I will enjoy cashing those checks as I heal. Please and thank you.”
Awe man!!! I just put $1000 on him to win the AL MVP
Can’t wait to see his statue on the side of Trout and Ohtani.
His statue will have a cast on it.
It’d actually be sort of hilarious for the Angels to put up an Ohtani statue.
I think that will happen…
It’ll be outside of a hospital, lol
I thought he’d be well rested and ready for 162 this year. Maybe next year, rest up, King!
So in other words, nothing changed.
Perry. – Bergman waiting on line 3 for a new offer
The guy running DOGE’s head just exploded when reading this
Rendon is officially the proud owner of the worst contract in the history of baseball.
Will he blame Moncada for putting something in his water, or does he not care enough anymore about his job?
Just how Anthony liked it, the less game’s, the happier he is..
Of all the albatross contracts our there, Kris Bryant is the worst; Rendon 2nd
Complete scam artists
Chris Davis contract was pretty bad too
I feel like Bryant actually wants to play and got very unlucky/folks were right to worry about his ability to stay healthy on a long term deal, but he wasn’t planning on fleecing anybody.
Rendon is 100% a scam artist for how he’s handled being on the Angels.
Going into free agency from the Nats, Rendon flat out said he didn’t want to play, only wanted the money and was playing fir as much money as possible over the shortest amount of time possible and wanted it from a team with the least amount of media attention or win now pressure- early in free agency Rendon was asking teams for like 4 years/$250M because his money goal was about $250M and he wanted to play the least amount of years possible to attain the money, but the closest offer to that was the Angels at 7 years/$245M. He turned down similar or slightly better offers from teams like the Dodgers because he knew it’d be a higher profile situation and he wanted to avoid that.
Well, he did the next best thing- he checked out and took every medical excuse to not play.
A lot of other players would’ve absolutely played through a ton of the “injuries” Rendon has taken long IL stints over.
What a joke this guy is. Since he knows he has two years left on his contract, he’s going to have the surgery now to get things right just in time for some stupid GM to sign him to one more contract.
@remember. He doesn’t care about playing. He wants to get released. I say let him get caught potentially faking injuries, so they can try to get out of it.
As a Browns fan, I would still trade Deshaun Watson for him. 🙂
yeah git ya some of these long term guaranteed contracts..
Wow maybe the Angels will come to Boras’s rescue and offer an over bloated contract for Bregman. Rendon just needs to go away.
Lololololol
I’ve never disliked an MLB player more than Anthony Rendon. I hope the Angels just release him so we can all forget about this guy.
I’ll raise you one Melky Cabrera…………
I hope they release him too since like what’s the point? His contract is through the 2026 season. Hip injuries are often difficult to return and play well. On the other point though, sadly he’ll be remembered as another bad contract the Angels signed under Moreno. I always thought it would be a bad contract but the injuries have sadly reached such a joke status. Even when he played last year it was difficult to watch. I think we’ll remember him for a very, very long time.
Well well well
Is this a new injury or did he wait until a week before spring training to decide to get the surgery? It’s obvious this guy doesn’t want to play ball anymore.
Rehab gone wrong I believe.
He should be sued. Garbage
Honestly they should just cut ties at this point. He’d probably still be an all star if we always had half game pandemic seasons.
Addition by subtraction
I had just made a bet for Rendon to get hurt again! The payout was pretty good too! I bet $500 and I made $2.50 off of it!! Astonishing!!
They shoulda cut him years ago lol
Hip injuries in older adults often leads to poor outcomes, including an increased risk of death.
Well, that’s that, then. We won’t see Anthony again.
He can pull the samesht next year. signed thru ’26..
Maybe the Angels could sell the Anthony Rendon in a hospital bed bobble head sponsorship to Band-Aid and Tylenol and recoup .001% of the money they lit on fire the day they signed him.
Hilarious
Jeez, season hasn’t started and already injured…
What a surprise! Next one up to do down with an injury is Kris Bryant
Probably, but at least he’s trying not to be injured.
I think it’s something in the Angel clubhouse… Seriously, has any player besides Ohtani actually improved their standing as an MLB player while a member of this franchise? MLB is littered with former or current Angels that aren’t worth a squirt.
John Lackey is the only one I can think of that passed through there and continued with any sort of success. I would consider Trout, but he’s going through it in real time. He needs to be freed from that purgatory of a ballclub.
Vlad
I wish that he could be sanctioned by the Players Association. His unprecedented malingering has done serious damage to the ability of MLBPA members to secure long-term contracts.
If he has a valid medical reason to not be able to play, what can the MLBPA or MLB possibly do? One can’t prove that’s he avoiding putting on a uniform.
Outside all-time greats (Trout, Shohei), Anaheim is the place where your career goes to die
Yep it killed Nolan Ryan
LOL
Kind of him to at least free up a roster spot this early in the season.
If only Antony could stay healthy
He should just retire and give the remaining money back to the Angels
The Angels organization must have insurance policies for this kind of thing. I’m not worried about Arte’s money. Maybe he’ll learn not to sign these long term contracts to unworthy recipients.
Anthony Rendon waited until now to get hip surgery when he could’ve got hip surgery last season doesn’t surprise me Anthony Rendon is a bum, a flake, a scammer. But he gets the last laugh, sticks it to Arte Moreno without Vaseline we’ll there you go Arte Moreno for handpicking Anthony Rendon Arte let your general manager run the team for the last 5 years you been interfering with all your unexperienced general managers. Now, I hope you learn a lesson let the general managers do their job without you interference. Now Anthony Rendon, relaxing sitting back in the Bahamas drinking a piña colada on Arte Moreno dime
@johnny bravo. He’s trying everything to get released. Atleast he might be able to play 40 games After the deadline. If not he just sits on the DL.
Anthony Undone …again
He is the reason no major league sports team should guarantee contract longer then 5 years
What a coincidence. Now he doesn’t have to leave for ST.
Rendon is the perfect example why, overall, overly lengthy contracts are a terrible idea.
Sure there are exceptions, but once a player is below the Mookie Betts level the team is most likely making a sucker bet.
I would love it if MLB teams could cut some losses on these types of deals, I think it would actually encourage more spending for smaller/mid market teams.
Let teams cut a player after the half way point of the contract and only pay out 50% of the remaining money. He’s far from the only player to fall off a cliff after a big deal, but it has to be frustrating for teams when they have these massive anchors holding them back
I would balance this addition with a deeper pool of bonuses that automatically go to players who over perform in their pre arb years
The Angels are cursed at 3B. Zack Cozart, anyone?
@southern lion. It just opens up a spot for Anderson and Davis. Those guys are playing for their careers.
Did he trip and fall over the remainder of his contract?
I wouldn’t put it past him. Mo will trade for him soon, don’t worry.
Working remote I see
Y’all do know that hip surgery isn’t exactly fun….and the fact that he needs it doesn’t make him a malingerer. Athletes are proud people. They don’t want to play badly
The assumptions are warranted with some of the stuff he’s said. I bet he scheduled the surgery for the eve of ST back in September, lol.
Sheesh
Anthony Rendon=poster boy for greedy player who just wants to get paid, and has no interest in actually playing
60-Day IL him and when you need to take him off at the end of the year, release him for his final season. You’re already paying him not play anyway.
At what point is a breach of contract? This guy is a P.O.S.
I would bet real money that Rendon took a good hard look, like at a forensic level, at the language in his contract, in order to pull this off without being in breach of contract. I am sure he paid close attention to the Yoenis Cespedes situation and learned from it- Cespedes losing like $26M off that $110M deal because Cespedes so blatantly violated basic expectations and obligations of his Mets deal to avoid playing while still collecting his paychecks, Rendon has managed to actually pull off while keeping every penny he was owed; Cespedes did not do this so successfully.
Here’s a few scenarios of similar ilk:
1) David Wright/Prince Fielder: their bodies actually truly failed them and they were genuinely unable to play/forced to medically retire early while on large deals. Not their fault. Bad luck. They try to recoup some through
2) Jacoby Ellsbury / Carl Crawford, etc: bad fit between player and club. There’s a mutual “parting of the ways” they mutually stop trying to reconnect on field. The club designs their roster without the player as part of the equation and consider their salary a sunk cost.
Granted, the Yankees and Ellsbury played a blame game and the Yankees tried to punish Ellsbury after the fact, but the evidence shows both sides willingly just kinda forgot they were in business together. Like breaking up without having the break up conversation or official declaration.
3) Anthony Rendon and Yoenis Cespedes: Gets the guaranteed mega contract and promptly quiet quits baseball, using a constant rotating sourced injuries, IL stints and rehab assignments as an excuse to avoid actually playing.
Again, the difference is that there was a ton of evidence that Cespedes basically committed fraud and functioned like he wasn’t a professional athlete and could just enjoy his horse ranch and play rancher in Florida while collecting his $27.5M a year from the Mets. He was investigated by the Mets, they proved he violated language in his contract, which U.S. in most players’ contracts, stipulating they avoid certain physical activities that could reasonably put them at risk of injuries that would prohibit or limit their ability to be available and healthy for their professional sports duties and in season schedule. Cespedes was blatant enough that the Mets called him on it legally and were able to cut his salary by tens of millions (it was something like $25M or $30M that they managed to avoid paying him out of his $110M deal) and dangled the final $6M in front of him, informing him he wouldn’t get another penny and might even be shed to retrieve part of his already paid out salaries unless he made basic reasonable efforts to actually get healthy and play in good faith for the Mets.
I think Rendon studied the Cespedes situation very carefully and figured out how to pull off a way more successful and legally sound version of avoiding playing without actually violating the contract and then losing out on his salaries; thus Rendon got to legally force the Angels to pay him his $38M+ annual salaries without getting docked and he got to avoid playing.
It’s the ultimate heist.
This dude waits till a week before spring training to have hip surgery. This dude just hates baseball now.
Release him!
Someone else brought up the possibility that this sudden and indefinite IL/rehab stint plus signing Moncada is in lieu of outright releasing Rendon, in order for the organization and I guess Rendon to save some dignity.
That’s a distinct possibility.
Anthony Rendon while you’re at the operating table getting hip surgery might as well go for the daily double brain surgery as well I wouldn’t be surprised if he takes snoop job making corona beer commercials
@johnny bravo. He might be getting hip surgery before they released him. Is he covered if they cut ties? I don’t think so. He might be getting his knees scoped after.
Be awesome if the surgeons were Angels fans and attached a couple testicles to his ears
Wow. Funny but still wow.
Before the ink dried on his contract this guy checked out. I dislike this ==== more than Trevor Bauer.. At least Bauer still wants to play.
Hilarious! What a useless garbage player and human he is
Lol the angels are the best at bad deals and 2nd to the mets for allowing talent to leave. Well maybe 3rd after the mets and rockies.
That is a huge blow to the Angels. They were really counting on him to make an impact in the middle of that line up.
Best FA signing Mike Rizzo didn’t make.
Yeah the Nats were almost obligated to sign either Rendon or Strasburg coming off their World Series win, to try to address the narrative that they always let their stars walk away.
Sure, Strasburg had just won the WS MVP. But everyone knew he was a huge injury risk. Seems kind of telling that the Nats didn’t waste any time choosing Strasburg over Rendon.
75th verse, same as the first…
Yeesh.
MLBTR…just shut down the comments for this one.
You had to know it would be basically the same three “comments” slightly reworded over and over. They aren’t wrong, but as soon as I read it, I could have predicted the onslaught of comments to come.
Why shut it down? It’s fun. It’s engagement with the site.
Would you say this if your username was AnyOtherTeamButTheAngelsFan1972?
It was a joke, relax
If what you cited as a “reason” for shutting the comments down was actually enforced on every article, very few articles here would have any comments.
Very true.
I was just mocking the predictable onslaught. And yes, it is basically the same thing(s) being said over and over.
I mean that is every article on here. Its the internet. There’s a lotta white noise posts (not mine though, those are all top quality)
Ever considered just moving onto another article rather than complaining about people’s comments??
once again, it was a joke
Are you not capable of reading right below it? I stated I was just mocking the mockers.
All due respect it didn’t sound like a joke, it sounded like an actual complaint.
I get it, but come on, like MLBTR is going to listen to me and actually shut it down?
No one should take themselves that seriously to think they wield such power.
Lastly, let’s face it we all knew what would happen in the comments section once people read it. It wasn’t as if I was shocked and appalled..
This might be the only thing all baseball fans can agree on at the moment lol. If anything, this site needs the comment section to come together on this.
No one hates baseball more than Rendon. I hope he doesn’t wake up from surgery
Good grief, dude.
He’s a selfish bum, but wishing death on him is pretty messed up.
I’d argue that Rob Manfred hates baseball more than Rendon.
Rendon is just a waste of a human being. .
Lol
Rendon has been absent for 5 years. No shame. Honestly, you’d think a guy woukd be embarrassed collecting on that contract for doing nothing. He should (have) retired by now.
Moreno should sue this guy after nullifying the contract.
Really? Rendon’t even care!
in Rendon’s case, It is an A and a hole on the cap.
Rendon never disappoints. Not one fan in a million thought this national embarrassment would finish the entire season. This, however, represents a new low even for this guy.
Let’s all just reflect on the 2020 Angels having a healthy Trout, prime Rendon, DH Ohtani, J. Upton, and Pujols available most games and yet they finished fourth. Maddon’s truly one of the great managers of the game.
2020 wasn’t a real baseball season, first of all. Second, having all the best hitters in one lineup doesn’t matter if the pitching can’t protect a lead.
“Release Me”
Anthony Rendon make a a huge donation to all the fire victims first responders help the Los Angeles community
The Angel’s run on 3B type players now makes a little more sense. I assume they’ve known about this. Hopefully they’ve known about it.
I’m shocked neither Anthony Rendon or Alex Cobb are healthy.
Rendon will miss the entire year. Mark it.
@halosheavenjj. Atleast he has a home on the DL, and not taking up a roster spot to get hurt on the first day.
I’m still taking him with my first pick in fantasy. There’s too much upside if he ends up getting healthy.
At least this gives Halos clarity on how to proceed. No more wavering on whether Rendon is a viable player. Halos go out and plan accordingly.
Well lucky for him baseball isn’t the most important thing in his life.
This is a net+ WAR for the Angels.
Contracts like Rendon’s, Patrick Corbin’s, and others are a good reminder that teams don’t have to sign the “top available free agent.” Sometimes you win by not being pressured into offering a bad contract.
Obviously you do have to sign FAs but every year there are some deals that just make you shake your head, and Rendon’s was one of those.
I’d have more respect for Rendon if he was admitted to a long term alcohol-substance abuse recovery program
I’ve personally known people to schedule elective surgeries for the drugs and the sympathy. That’s what this looks like me.
Yeah, now go out and sign Arenado to take his place.
What could Possibly go Wrong….?
It’s not like he was expected to contribute this season or thru the rest of the contract.
He might be the kind of guy to have the surgery, miss the year. Come back healthy-ish next season. Have decent numbers, then try to get some money in free agency thru Boras. I think highly unlikely. He’s probably done for his career at this point.
I highly doubt he wants to sign another contract. And I also highly doubt any MLB team would offer a contract anyway. I’m pretty sure he’s done playing. He’ll be cut before next season starts. And to clarify, hip surgery isn’t an elective surgery a vast majority of the time. And it’s not necessarily an easy surgery. Getting paid will make it easier though.
Shocking I tell ya!
The only thing more shocking was Clayton going back to the Dodgers!
Jacoby Ellsbury,Rendon and many others.Have a few great seasons.Let’s pay him huge money. This happens.I love it.Project superstardom on a few seasons.I also love the Yankees and Angels allowed it.If Rendon had like 7 really good seasons i would say maybe it is his fault. If a team deems you worthy ,i don’t see a problem. If he is hurt,he is hurt.
Hall of Famer at the bank
Getting a statue outside Cedars Sinai
Maybe anthony got fired
Maybe after Moncada, ren done got fired
Maybe it’s good to not have to think about him this season
Maybe he lost all of his incentive with the 245 million
You have got to be hungry, like Tim Anderson
REN done is not hungry
Did Strasburg ever “officially” retire? I hope Rendon does. His contract is a bad joke, especially because he said he didn’t like baseball even before the Angels threw away 40mil a year on the dude. I’m sure Rendon is a nice guy and all but dude retire already.
The Rendon contract with the Halo’s has got to be on the short list of worst signings when considering production going forward.
BREAKING NEWS
Anthony Rendon reportedley gets fourth boo boo on his right knee and seen dropping his getlato in sandbox and crying for 3 hours. Will taken a leave of absence for 18 months.
Surprise, surprise, surprise…the return of American Idle!
Angels fans will have paid Rendon 232 million dollars over 7 years for a total of 22 home runs and 125 RBIs. One way or another, salaries are paid by the fans, and they deserve better representation in the collective bargaining agreements.
Reasonable people acting in good faith would correct the injustice.
A couple of bruises on that laundry list of injuries and a thing or two handled by ibuprofen. He’s a delicate flower. Good riddance.
Rendon will return September 30th 2026…
I wonder if at some point the Angels will just cut Rendon. Seriously. It’s hard to feel bad for this guy when he just seems so… indifferent.
Also, I hope Arte realizes that this is all his doing for meddling in and wanting to sign him to begin with. He should leave baseball operations to the GMs and not make roster decisions himself. He needs to go play franchise mode on the Show or something.
@spacerangerangel. If they cut him, would they have to cover the surgery. My guess is he waited til camp to say he got hurt. At least this way we might get him back if injuries go sideways.
His contract is insured, so the Angels are getting paid something back while he’s recovering from injuries and surgery. If they cut him, they have to pay him in full right now and they don’t get that insurance payout. As dumb as it is to keep him since he’s pretty much always hurt and he doesn’t care if he ever plays baseball again, it’s somehow dumber to let him go.
Laughing all the way to the bank! Show some balls and forfeit your salary!
He’s an a-hole, but he’s not stupid. Forfeiting salary is stupid as hell.
I don’t believe Jesus lied; he gave all of himself until the end—at least, that is what the Bible says. Anthoney Rendon, you never did. Your faith is essential to your life, you claim, Next, followed by your family. You lied to your faith, and what an excellent example you have set for your children. Kayton Kershaw is a man of faith, yet through the pain and the years, he has set an example for his community and his children.
This is chapter 7 of the LAA book “Age doesn’t matter”.
Just for team and fan base morale they should absolutely release him now!
Show the Angels fans they admit he was a colossal failure signing, while further keeping Angel players away from his “It’s just a job” attitude that brings down anyone in the same dugout.
So how does team sports insurance work?
Before or shortly after a team signs a player, the financial officer and the owner get together and decide on a particular insurance policy. Each team evaluates its own threshold of risk. Some teams have a standard amount they will spend for a policy, while other teams will decide not to insure any players. According to one insurance executive, players who “make more than $3 million per year are considered insurable.”
The amount (or the premium) that the team pays to the insurance carrier is determined by several factors. The first factor is the waiting period. The waiting period is the amount of days before a team can collect on a player’s injury. The longer the waiting period, the less the team will have to pay for the policy.
In baseball, there are usually 90- and 182-day waiting periods, with the period beginning at the start of the regular season. If a player who is covered by a team’s insurance policy injures himself on March 7, 2024, and the team has agreed to a 90-day waiting period, the team will collect its money on the 91st day of the regular season or June 30, 2024. A team with an 182-day waiting period (the standard length of the season) will automatically start collecting on a long-term injury beginning on the opening day of the following season.
In other words, if a player injures himself on August 15, 2024, and the team has an 182-day waiting period, the team will begin to collect on the opening day of 2025 if the athlete is still injured and unable to play.
As to the insurance question, only Arte can answer this question but here is the basics of ballplayer insurance,
Rendon should be a new word!!!
Rendon verb.
Def.: To give someone or something a bad deal.
The Angels always get rendoned.
Politicians really like rendoning the middle class.
Trump is always trying to rendon immigrants.
Doctors Without Borders received a lot of rendonations in 2024.
Elizabeth Taylor’s marriages proved to be huge rendon’s for her husbands.
This guys been a bum since they signed him. What a waste of…
Addition by Subtraction
Rendon and Trout are gunna get statues outside of Cedars Sinai
@dsett75 – Has anyone seen Mike recently? Did he get injured watching his beloved Eagles win the Super Bowl?
If only someone took the time to interview JD Martinez, one of the best hitters in baseball.
This explains a lot of the Angels moves this season.
Waiting for this guy to finally come out and say “the jig is up. I am done playing the game of baseball that I hate so much.”
I think he knows he’d be risking getting sued for defrauding the Angels if he did that before the contract expires.
I believe the moment this contract concludes/expires (so Day 1 of the 2026-2027 off season) Rendon can come out and happily proclaim that he made as little effort as contractually required of him and got away with forcing the Angels to let him get surgeries, do rehab stints, do IL stints, etc. in a way to avoid playing and he feels like he basically got $220M from them (he lost out on a chunk in 2020 along with every other player) to give them $22M worth of effort over the life of the deal and he’s proud of that.
But if he says anything like that while still under contract, they may be able to sue him for fraud/violating his contractual responsibilities, etc.
When this CBA is up, the owners should do a lockout for however long it takes to rid this game of guaranteed contracts.
I think it time to cut him and move on from this pile of crao never did anything and u wait this long to get surgery what a god dam joke
One day before Spring Training: Anthony Rendon is going to have surgery on his hip to avoid menopause!! Smart man girl right there, wish mom knew about this
I’m convinced he threw himself down a long flight of stairs, exorcist style
for lack of a better word, this guy is a thief.
He needs to go lol. He’s done
This is why teams are hesitant to sign players long-term.
Poster child on what’s wrong with athletes getting obscene money to sometimes play a stupid game
