The White Sox announced that right-hander Ron Marinaccio has been designated for assignment. That’s the corresponding move for left-hander Martín Pérez, whose one-year deal has now been officially announced.
Marinaccio, 29, hasn’t appeared in a big league game for the Sox. He was claimed off waivers from the Yankees with about a week remaining in the 2024 season, but was kept on optional assignment. He has held onto his roster spot for the past four months but has now been nudged off.
The righty was generally a high-strikeout and low-control guy for the Yanks. He tossed 91 1/3 innings over the 2022 and 2023 seasons, allowing 3.05 earned runs per nine. He struck out 29% of batters faced but also gave out walks at a 13.2% clip. In 2024, he got his walk rate down to 10.1% but his strikeout rate also fell to 25.3% as he posted a 3.86 ERA.
Overall, Marinaccio has a 3.22 ERA in 114 2/3 innings, with a 28.2% strikeout rate and 12.6% walk rate. It’s generally been fairly similar in the minors. Over the past four years, Marinaccio has thrown 132 innings on the farm with a 2.86 ERA, 33.5% strikeout rate and 11.5% walk rate.
The control is clearly an issue but Marinaccio is likely to draw interest based on the strikeouts. He also still has an option remaining and barely two years of service time, meaning he still hasn’t qualified for arbitration and can be sent to the minors fairly freely for another year. The Sox will have a week of DFA limbo to figure out what’s next for the righty, though the waiver process takes 48 hours, meaning any trade talks would need to come together in the next five days.
Stupid DFA
That’s too bad. I was hoping Ronnie was finally given a chance to succeed
White Sox must be swimming in reliever depth.
Submit the claim, Cashman.
I rubbed my eyes when I saw this, YBC! Unless his arm fell off… too bad you guys are second-to-last on the Waivers!
There’s no way they have six arms in the pen better than Marinaccio. Remember, the White Sox jettisoned both Tim Hill and Jake Cousins, who then became valuable arms for the Yankees.
Had a decent run with the Yankees, some team prob will put a claim in for him and he won’t clear, if he does going into camp with Chicago as a non roster invite isn’t the worst idea in the world he may earn a spot on the roster with a good spring.
Chicago may not win much, but players will get an opportunity there that they may not get elsewhere, so that does matter.
He may get traded before he hits the waiver wire. To some team for “ International Pool money”, or just cash.
I think he has some value about just cutting him loose.
Surprised the White Sox held into Steven Wilson or even Jesse Scholtens. Wilson’s BB/K ratios are the same as Ron’s if not worse. At least Scholtens can swing into starter mode if needed.
I would love to know the factors that put Marinaccio into DFA limbo instead of the others.
Yankees should bring him back
No brainer
Not sure they have room for him on the MLB roster.
He can’t throw quality strikes. Maybe someone can fix him. At least he has more MLB service time than any of us.
Yes. Slight command issues but, more importantly, he has one minor league options left to do some work.
Jersey, how right you are. Us fans say he stinks, that one sucks, how does he have a job, etc. yet they can always say at a minimum they’ve lived our dream of putting on a big league uniform. I would even put a Yankees’ uniform on if it meant something (although at 63 I would not want a picture of it …).
@Dewey Maybe you can sneak into Old Timers’ Day at YS.
Yankees, I can’t even sneak out of the house…
I met a retired commercial airline pilot/Uber driver once. He sails on one of this three boats around the world for six months of the year. Naturally, I asked “Why are you driving Uber?” His response: “To give my wife a break.”
A former boss of mine was an SVP for some major brands. His wife is equally successful. He hasn’t had to work since he was 50. Yet, in his 70s, he drives an Uber and works as an airport greeter/guide. He loves to talk and keep busy, so he works not for the money but the engagement.
The only way Marinaccio is their 40th man on the roster is if his arm is being held together by paper clips and chewed gum.
Wanna start some games in SD, Ronnie?!?
I think the Sox should have kept him and dfa’d a different pitcher.
Let’s see if anybody recognizes the paperclips/Big League Chew surgery and rejects his medicals… but yeah, what you said, Roob!
Are you serious? Was there no one else that could be DFA’d? Stupid move by Getz…
Justin Anderson not being either of the last couple 40 man drops is a head scratcher. He’s an older known bad-he and the washed up Bryan Shaw’s of last couple seasons are what rebuilding teams don’t need.
Acoss: Every Yankee fan said the same thing when he was designated. He had some real struggles finding the plate and finding too much of it when he did. I always root for the marginal guys so hopefully he can figure it out. He was pretty good for a stretch in NY.
Can’t help but think of Ralph Macchio whenever I see Ron’s name. It’s just too similar for me not to.
Wax on, wax off!
Maybe Mr. Miyagi can rub his hand together and fix Ron’s arm.
“Man who can catch fly with chopstick, accomplish anything.”
His name reminds me of Rocky Marciano!
Net loss
Would love for the Red Sox to take a flyer on this live arm. But, unfortunately, they’ve filled up their 40 man with 37yo’s , Mexican league pitchers, and, guys rehabbing from surgery…..
Ugggh
I was wondering where Ron went.
Purgatory…
Limbo
This guy can’t crack the White Sox bullpen? Career FIP of 4.17 and ERA+ of 129 not good enough for the vaunted White Sox bullpen? What are they doing over there?
Getz being a moron…
but he sure could handle the saxophone.
This has got to be a mistake! Right? Really? There has to be some other choice to dfa.
“Allowing 3.05 runs per 9”. Awfully wordy
Don’t understand how a team losing so many games can’t find a spot for Marinaccio. Put him in the pen and if he is successful then plenty of teams will give something for him come trade deadline time
Meh. Seems like a serviceable chap but no biggie. Unlike the value you get in a bag at a Wendy’s drive-thru
Maraschino Cherry man needs to learn one more part of the Roger Beshens Football Slider.
We have tons of bums on this roster… it’s like a homeless shelter over here and this is the guy?
