The Mariners haven’t been shy about their desire to shore up their infield mix this winter, and while at points in the offseason the club has shown an interest in upgrading at second their focus appears to be primarily on upgrading the infield corners rather than the keystone, where options like Dylan Moore and Ryan Bliss are available to hold down the fort until top middle infield prospect Cole Young is ready for his MLB debut.
First base appears to be fairly simple hole for the club to fill. They’ve long been connected to a reunion with veteran Justin Turner, who helped to bolster their first base mix down the stretch and could pair well with Luke Raley’s left-handed bat at the position. Aside from that possibility, a number of viable veteran options like Mark Canha and Anthony Rizzo still remain available in free agency as well, not to mention trade candidates like Yandy Diaz, Luis Arraez, and LaMonte Wade Jr. who could provide a bit more impact at the cost of trade capital. Even after a run on first base talent just before the New Year, plenty of options remain available for the club to consider as they look for an upgrade over Raley and youngster Tyler Locklear.
Third base, however, is a bit more complicated. While a number of players could at least theoretically be available at the position this winter, Alex Bregman and Nolan Arenado both figure to be well outside of the Mariners’ price range. Another potential trade candidate, Eugenio Suarez, also seems unlikely to be a fit given that the Mariners themselves traded Suarez just one offseason ago. Beyond Bregman, few options available in free agency provide obvious upgrades over Josh Rojas, who the club utilized at third base last year before non-tendering him back in November.
Standing pat doesn’t appear to be an option at the position, either: Austin Shenton and Leo Rivas could at least theoretically pitch in at the position but have a combined 136 plate appearances at the big league level, necessitating at least one veteran addition to take the lion’s share of reps at the hot corner. With an apparently tight budget and minimal internal solutions available, who could be a realistic target for the club this winter?
Free Agents
- Ha-Seong Kim: Kim, 29, is without a doubt the best free agent infielder who could potentially fit into the Mariners’ budget given his 106 wRC+ and plus defense all around the infield over the past three seasons. MLBTR predicted Kim to land a relatively affordable one-year, $12MM contract ahead of the 2025 season at the outset of the offseason, but as the market has developed some reports have indicated he could land a multi-year deal this winter and depending on how the bidding goes, it’s easy to imagine things going beyond Seattle’s comfort zone. Beyond the possibility of Kim landing a deal that goes beyond what Seattle is willing to offer, Kim has played both shortstop and second base far more commonly than third throughout his career. As Kim likely looks to rebuild his value coming off shoulder surgery, it would hardly be a shock if he preferred to sign somewhere where he’d be able to be a regular shortstop. He’d be a defensive upgrade for J.P. Crawford, but the Mariners have shown no desire to move him off the position to this point.
- Paul DeJong: DeJong, 31, was a quality regular at shortstop with the Cardinals early in his career and even made an All-Star game back in 2019. His offense fell way off after that season, however, and he struggled to a 72 wRC+ from 2020 to 2023. Last season as something of a rebound for the veteran, however, as he split time between the White Sox and Royals and managed to hit a respectable .227/.276/.427 (95 wRC+) in 139 games with solid glovework at both shortstop and, more importantly in this context, third base. That respectable season should allow him to easily beat the $1.75MM guarantee he landed with Chicago last winter, though he should nonetheless still be a perfectly affordable option for the Mariners this winter. It’s easy to imagine DeJong jumping at the opportunity if offered regular starts in Seattle, but it’s fair to wonder if the Mariners would have much interest in him as a fit. After all, they just parted ways with Rojas back in November despite strong glovework thanks to his below average offense, and DeJong’s 32.4% strikeout rate last year goes against the more contact-oriented approach the club has attempted to cultivate in recent years.
- Yoán Moncada: Moncada would be an interesting candidate for the third base job in Seattle. A former top prospect, Moncada has had an up-and-down career with the White Sox before things came off the rails due to injuries the past few years. He’s played just 104 games over the past two seasons, but has a fairly respectable 101 wRC+ in that time. It’s far from impossible to imagine him bouncing back to something closer to the 120 wRC+ he posted with Chicago back in 2021, though it’s possible that (like with DeJong) his elevated strikeout numbers throughout his career could give the Mariners some pause. That said, Moncada’s overall offensive profile when healthy is stronger than that of DeJong’s, and given his limited track record in recent years the infielder should still be very affordable.
- Jose Iglesias: Iglesias is coming off a career year with the Mets that saw him slash .337/.381/.448 (137 wRC+) in 291 plate appearances across 85 games. That’s the sort of performance that should make him a very attractive candidate for virtually any club’s bench mix, but the Mariners could stand out among other potential suitors by offering him a regular role. With that being said, there’s plenty of potential cause for concern in Iglesias’s profile. The veteran infielder will play all of this coming season at age-35, and it’s impossible to imagine him replicating the incredible .382 BABIP that made him an above-average hitter last year. He’s also fairly inexperienced at third base, although he did play the position quite well (+2 Outs Above Average) when called upon by the Mets last year. Iglesias’s contact-oriented approach could hold particular appeal in Seattle, and he could be an attractive option for the club if they’re interested in giving larger roles to youngsters like Shenton and Rivas.
Trade Candidates
- Alec Bohm: Bohm stands out on this list in part because the club has already reportedly expressed interest in his services this winter. Those talks understandably seemed to fizzle out when the Phillies asked for Logan Gilbert or George Kirby in return for Bohm’s services, but if Philadelphia decides to drop their asking price as the offseason drags on he remains one of the better fits available to the Mariners this winter. While Bohm’s defense at the hot corner has generally left much to be desired, he slashed a strong .280/.332/.448 (115 wRC+) last year and struck out just 14.2% of the time, making him a strong fit for a club that has typically shied away from high-strikeout hitters when possible. If the asking price for Bohm stays anywhere near where it was earlier this offseason, however, it’s hard to imagine a trade coming together.
- Willi Castro: Castro, 28 in April, has started just 48 games at third base throughout his career to this point but is a super utility player with a great deal of experience at both shortstop and second base, which suggests he should be able to handle the hot corner relatively easily. Since joining the Twins prior to the 2023 season, Castro has put up back-to-back 108 wRC+ seasons while accumulating 5.6 fWAR. Minnesota seems disinclined to pay the $6.2MM that MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz projects Castro will earn in his final trip through arbitration, but that’s a price tag the Mariners should have little trouble stomaching for a likely regular at a position of need.
- Brett Baty: Baty, 25, stands out from the other potential trade candidates mentioned thanks to the fact that he’s got just 169 MLB games under his belt. A former consensus top-30 prospect in the sport, Baty has struggled to this point in his big league career and hit just .229/.306/.327 (83 wRC+) in 50 games with the Mets this past season. The emergence of Mark Vientos has seemingly boxed Baty out of a path to playing time with the club in 2025, particularly if Pete Alonso eventually returns to Queens. That could make Baty expendable for the club, and if the Mariners aren’t able to find a more reliable veteran option in free agency or on the trade market it would be very understandable for the club to pivot towards rolling the dice on a player with Baty’s offensive potential and prospect pedigree.
AaronJudgeMVP29
Yoan Moncada… seems like a Mariners get.
thecoffinnail
Miguel Andujar seems like a Mariners get. Actually surprised they haven’t traded for a blocked youngster. Several teams have solid 3rd base prospects that won’t get much playing time unless they move to another position or team.
deweybelongsinthehall
How many games at third has Andujar recently had and as I recall, he wasn’t very good defensively except maybe in comparison to Devers…That said, for any team in need of a righty DH/emergency outfielder, I like the idea of giving him another shot.
NYG4246
I’ve been saying this for years on this site and he proved it last year- With regular ABs, andujar is a very good hitter. Looks like he lost some power from the shoulder issues but he still makes good contact. He refuses to walk though lol, very good hitter.

Would Orioles choice of one of Gilbert or Kirby be enough for both Mayo and Basallo? I am guessing not.

Kirby is worth more than Gilbert because of service time issues (and of course the advanced stats) remember the rumors of a Gilbert trade around a year ago?
That’s not saying Gilbert is not worth a lot because he is still worth a ton

I still think some GMs are a bit hinky on pulling the trigger on an “Oriole prospect” deal. D.L. Hall, Holliday, Stowers, etc. had (up to now, anyways) been disappointments.
Tigers3232
Holliday was 20 last season. You seem to have conviently left Adley, Cowser, Henderson, and Westburg off your list.
I think your assessment is pretty hinky ignoring all of their successes as if they did not happen.

I forget how every other top 100 prospect instantly blooms. Kelenic was great for the Mariners right?! Also you forgot Joey Ortiz, who seems to be doing alright in Milwaukee, and GrayRod…and Bradish.

Kelenic still isn’t good, so mentioning him doesn’t support your case.

I often wonder about these comments. Henderson is one of the best players in BB and Adley might be the best catcher. Cowser finished 2nd in ROY. Grayrod just finished a nifty 13-4.
And neither Miami (Norby .760 OPS) nor Mil (Ortiz 2.7 bWAR in 440 ABs) are complaining about the prospects they received.
Are they trolling, or do they legit forget about the abundance of prospects that the O’s have developed?
Tigers3232
@Joe He either had to be trolling or has no business talking baseball. By and large the O’s have done an amazing job developing young position player talent. Hopefully they get the arms needed to complement that group before they are one day broke up.
good vibes only
I think its more likely a reason the Orioles wont make trades than other teams not wanting to trade with them. Every team evaluates their own prospects and other teams prospects constantly. The O’s need some of these guys to prove it (including Holliday) before they will feel comfortable trading from their prospect hoard.
I dont think front offices or talent evaluators are thinking less about the O’s top prospects. O’s just arent willing to trade them.

Article sounds like M’s are looking to fill a need now for 2025. 3b? Luis’s brother Ramon maybe. That said; he’s kinda invaluable to the Os … and cheap. Can’t see FO Elias willing to move him.

bwmiller79
If I’m the Mariners, I’m making that trade, choice of any starter on the team.
mynameisjeff253
LOL at that trade proposal…You want Kirby or Gilbert, that’s going to cost you Westburg and possibly more. It has to absolutely hurt you guys like it would hurt us to lose any of those guys.
hoof hearted
Not Gilbert. Or Miller or woo. Kirby for westburg and kersted? Ya, I know O’s fans ” were not giving up 2 studs…”. For Kirby, M’s gotta look like they got a good deal (O’s overpay). Now the O’s have ,Kirby and Grayson next 4 years min to lead the rotation
mynameisjeff253
Gilbert is just as valuable as Kirby. Heck, Miller is quickly approaching that same territory as well. The point is. the Ms have the monopoly on young, elite SPs making minimal dollars. They get to set the price and it’s ridiculously high I can assure you. It would absolutely gut us to lose any of those 3. It has to gut the team they’re trading with in the same way. Red Sox want Kirby, Gilbert, or Miller? Ok, let’s start with Duran. That’s how it should go. Those type of pitchers don’t just grow on trees. You want elite SPs that are FAs? Be prepared to fork out $30M+ for 6 years or more. These guys that MD have are a STEAL considering what they make and controllable years left.

Consider that the Mariners gave up four prospects, two SS and two SP for Luis Castillo. Noelvi Marte was part of the haul Castillo had to be signed for $17M to avoid arbitration.

Arraez doesn’t fit with how slow he is. Clogs the basepaths. He would do better on a team of home run hitters.
stymeedone
Other than articles about who’s still a free agent, Moncada has not had a single rumor connecting him to any team. There is a lot we don’t know about the collapse of the White Sox that front offices likely know. He may go the way of Bauer, and never be heard from again. Too toxic to touch. Just speculation on my part.
17dizzy
The Cardinals need young established starting pitching of which the Mariners have.
The Cardinals have a young Nolan Gorman who needs a change of scenery to make it big.
Some sort of combination of a Mariners Starting pitcher for 3rd baseman Gorman and other Cardinals prospects seems like a good option.
seamaholic 2
Mariners have exactly five SP’s. Maybe six if you want to add Hancock. Gorman pulls Hancock, sure, but everyone else is too good. Unless you’re talking prospects.
mynameisjeff253
We don’t want prospects. We already have a top 5 farm chock full of great prospects. What we need is young, controllable impact bats. Especially if you’re talking about dealing for any of the core 4 young guns. Castillo? can be had for a much lower price but it will still command a Gorman or maybe Donovan. Want Gilbert, Kirby, or Miller? We’re talking Masyn Winn to even get the conversation started. It’s gotta hurt you guys like it would us losing any of our young SPs.
WadeBoggsWildRide
1. Yoan Moncada cheap flier
2. Willi Castro too expensive for current team but cheap enough for M’s, probably won’t cost much in trade.
3. Luis Arraez probably too expensive but would come cheap in trade. His hitting style might be great in Seattle.
Tizzi60
Just no to Arraez, no power, and no offense, too slow for lead off or base stealing. Just no! Three batting titles and will be on his fourth team! Doesn’t that just scream stay away?
NYG4246
Yea, three batting titles screams stay away.
good vibes only
No thanks. I dont see the point of any of these options if they are ballin on a budget yet again. These guys are all starters on 2nd division teams not one that claims to have playoff and championship aspirations.
Might as well roll with D-mo, Bliss, Raley in spring and bridge the gap to the prospects cheaply. If they can swing a trade for a more clear upgrade, great. No point in continuing to sign $5-10M/YR FA players that have a ceiling as a league average bat and a floor below replacement level.
Moncada has zero upside, there’s not a front office in the league that believes he is physically capable of even showing a glimpse of what he showed as an uberprospect.

I find it hilarious that MLBTR always uses limited ML experience as a negative. Every player, including All-Stars, start that way. OMG! Shenton has only x number of at bats! When the alternative is to sign a meh player as a free agent, why not take a chance on the unknown when the known is such low sure thing.
KamKid
I think it depends on the position the team is in. Is a team good with a hole to fill? Then maybe just a floor move to shore up a position defensively. A team that is a fringe contender might want more of a risk/reward play.
seamaholic 2
Because you only get so long with that great rotation. Can’t throw away a year on a total dice roll. If the kid looks like a star in ST, great! But you still have the sure thing available in case.

Jerry seems to think the same way based on his past ‘spare parts’ style acquisitions. How in the world is someone so good at evaluating and developing a top tier farm so bad at making upgrades to the major league team?
I’m with you.. whats the point of signing one of these turds when we can get the same out of someone internal. I’d rather have D-Mo at 3rd than waste any dollars on Moncada. Same situation as bringing in washed up AJ Pollock.. why throw away a few million bucks on a FA like that?
momTurphy
Shentons low PAs accounts for his impressive 115 wRC+. He’s still an unknown. His issue for Seattle is that he’s a lefty hitting 1B where you already have plenty of mediocrity who could handle the spot (Raley L, Garver R, Locklear R). Or he’s a subpar defender at 3B that JP can’t cover for.
As it currently stands Ben Williamson is likely the main 3B for the year (maybe not up in April), with Dylan Moore as his “backup” that’s gonna play 100 games around the field either way. JP at short. Bliss and Young at 2B. Raley/Locklear at 1B. If Ford gets the call early he can push Garver to DH/1B (if he starts hitting like his typical odd-year splits). Shenton is a depth piece that was basically given to Seattle.

M’s should go get Pete. Idk what it will take but surely at this point shorter deal with opt-outs is in play. 3 years 90-100 mil with player opt outs? Regardless, no matter what, grab him and go get Bohm in my opinion. Both seem like perfect fits, immediate offensive upgrades and I know this is overrated but both would bring a bit of an attitude or slight culture that lack in the hitter department in Seattle …. That dang team is so stacked in pitching, lord it’s a waste to see such terrible hitting waste it away

I’m going to give it to you straight as a very disappointed and agitated Ms fan. They will NEVER sign a FA like Alonso or anyone for that matter for more than $10M I’m guessing. Dipoto’s biggest FA signing came last offseason in the form of Garver at like $12M AAV. We all HATE our ownership for wasting away a generational rotation and going extremely cheap on the offensive side of the ball. If we spent even $180M instead of below league avg at $140M, we’d probably win the World Series or at least get there. We are FED up. That’s putting it mildly.

Seattle’s “terrible hitting” last year posted a wRC+ of 104, including a league-leading wRC+ of 118 after August 15 when the Mariners led the American League in runs scored.
The Mariner lineup loses only the likes of Jorge Polanco, Josh Rojas, Luis Urias and midseason acquisition Justin Turner.
With current lineups, FanGraphs now ranks Seattle sixth in the American League in projected 2025 WAR. The Mariners rank sixth in projected position player WAR and seventh in projected pitching WAR.

The T-Mobile Park effect is too often underestimated.
Chester Copperpot
I keep forgetting how awesome the Mariners hitting is! Great pitching and great hitting!! It’s weird that they keep losing all the time. Year after year… because they can’t score runs.
If they’re such great hitters, why don’t they hit good?
muskie73
Over the past four seasons Seattle has averaged 88+ wins with the fourth-best cumulative regular-season record in a league that now sends six teams to the postseason.
Seattle has not posted a team wRC+ below 100 since 2012 (when the wRC+ was 99).
library.fangraphs.com/offense/wrc/
Seattle’s home park is a tough place to hit … T-Mobile Park is where live bats go to die.
deweybelongsinthehall
It’s partially why the eye test is more important than saberstats. The M’s strike out too many times/need more consistent contact. Same thing with the Red Sox last season. Anyone who follows the club knows despite scoring and hitting, consistency in contact was lacking and the team always it seems had double digit strikeouts. The run totals get distorted sometimes by those big games when everything gets and they score 15 runs.
hllywdjff
Mike Trout has no problem hitting there! Very good to great players would have no problem hitting there we just find Walmart types…
BPax
To your point hllywdjff, Robby Cano, Nelson Cruz, Ichiro, and Jean Segura, to name four that came here and hit well. Two *Hall of Famers, one almost HOFer, and Segura, just a good hitter everywhere he went.
*Cano most likely won’t get in the Hall but had he stayed clean, he was on his way to strong consideration.
muskie73
Pete Alonso, perhaps the top free agent hitter left on the market, might help the Mariners score runs but the veteran’s stats would almost certainly take a hit playing half his games at T-Mobile Park.
Which is one reason why Alonso would likely shun Seattle.
Compare the stats of Alonso and Teoscar Hernandez in their combined age 28 and 29 seasons:
PA 316 G, 1353 PA, 123 OPS+, 121 wRC+, 5.7 bWAR, 4.9 fWAR
TH 274 G, 1130 PA, 130 OPS+, 131 wRC+, 6.6 bWAR, 6.9 fWAR
After his age 29 season, Hernandez was traded to Seattle where in 2023 he finished second in the league in strikeouts, posting a 108 OPS+, 106 wRC+, 2.1 bWAR and 1.9 fWAR.
Hernandez followed up his lone season in Seattle by posting a 141 OPS+, 134 wRC+, 4.3 bWAR and 3.5 fWAR with the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers.
For the past 12 seasons Seattle’s slightly above average hitters have been handicapped by a harsh hitting environment. The flip side is that the ballpark has enhanced the raw stats of Seattle pitchers.
muskie73
Correction: Seattle has posted a wRC+ below 100 as recently as 2021.
Chester Copperpot
Sabermetrics are stupid. Anyone who watched even a handful of M’s games would know they can’t hit… period. But someone can find some saberstat to say their “weighted runs created”was actually pretty good in August, like that means something. I don’t know what to say to someone denying reality that hard.
hllywdjff
Our eyes and the wins or losses are a pretty good indicator if a team sucks or not. Lol
YaGottaBelieveAgain
Did you ever look at the run differentials posted on MLB.com.
Some teams overall Win Loss record disparity is due to a combination of hitting with RISP, blown saves and poor defense/fundamental
No ties in MLB means 5 losses turned into 5 wins is like a ten game swing.

Moncada is more interesting because of what you could get if he’s healthy but Iglesias might be the safer play. Another under the radar possibility that isn’t mentioned in the article is Brandon Drury
Ragnarok
Drury was so bad but on a minor league deal he might be worth a flier.
Rsox
Drury is only a year removed from a 26 Home Run season. Last year was a combination of migraines, a nagging hamstring injury and a respiratory infection that while many on team suffered, according to reports affected him the worst. A minor league deal to prove that’s behind him wouldn’t be bad
kwolf68
Man had no idea Drury had headaches and a chest cold. How was he not put into hospice?
Drasco0366
I was thinking the same thing on Drury, he strikes out a ton but likely isn’t going to sign for more than a couple million if he earns a major league deal at all.
I get the Mariners desire to lower their K rate but given today’s game and the limited amount of financial freedom they have, it seems like a tall task.
I don’t know if the Cubs would part with him but Triantos could make a lot of sense. He’s posted very good contact skills in the minors, shown some pop and at least thus far has been a very opportunistic base runner.
Dogbone
drasco0, Agree, Triantos could be an absolutely perfect fit for the M’s. For what they’re looking for, he sure checks a lot of the boxes. He’s 21, I believe – and has developed himself into a decent fielder as well. He’s always hit.
However I’m still very upset about the Cubs constantly drafting and developing, then giving away guys like Cam Smith, J Ferris and even Herz – I’m not trading Triantos unless receiving an established #2 SP in return. And the M’s have them. Hoyer needs to be tougher in negotiations.

I’d like to see what Williamson does in Spring Training. If he’s got the goods he could be the answer. Rather have him rather than some over the hill stop gap

3 team trade with the Dodgers and Cardinals
MLB Top 100 Commenter
If Arenado would waive his no-trade clause for Mariners, Haniger and Ben Williamson for Arenado. But Arenado gets $64 million over three years and M’s only save one year at $15 million dumping Haniger. Williamson is a solid 3B prospect who fields well and hits for average, but with little power. Otherwise, Bohm would be great, but not for MLB ready starting pitching. So, my pick is HSK 1.0.
SodoMojo90
HSK tore the labrum in his throwing shoulder and won’t be ready until midsummer.

Have you had seconds thought after you hit the post comment button? Oh wait somebody gave a thumb up.
MLB Top 100 Commenter
I think even if he is back in May, HSK is a good fit because he can play 3B, 2B and SS. My only second thought is whether he will be out of their price range.

I like the idea of acquiring Baty. I think the Mets end up trading Baty before the season starts and he’s a good fit there. And of course he’s cheap.
Was Urias mentioned in this article? Was he already signed?
muskie73
Steamer600, which assumes 600 plate appearances for each hitter, projects 2025 WAR of 2.6 for Alec Bohm, 2.4 for Jace Jung, 2.3 for Brett Baty, 2.3 for Josh Jung, 2.1 for Coby Mayo. 2.1 for Josh Smith and 2.0 for Curtis Mead.
Seattle will likely find a trade partner for a pre-arb third baseman or fall back on Gold Glove wnner Dylan Moore, whom Steamer600 projects with 2.4 WAR in 2025.
hllywdjff
Moore is not a starter at all people need to get over that idiot my god! .200 with a ton of strikeouts ain’t gonna work!
momTurphy
Moore had an OPS .145 higher than Julio against teams over .500 last year. If the “superstar” is only gonna pad stats against bad teams, you need guys who aren’t scared of big moments in the lineup.

Torkelson and Jung for Castillo
spjanis
Tigers have to get the Mariners to eat half of Maeda’s salary too for it to work. Castillo would fill the perfect roster spot for a better duration and price than what the free agent Market is offering.
momTurphy
I can’t imagine the mariners getting Jung and Torkelson for Castillo and only taking on 10M of Maeda. I think Detroit would want them to eat 10M/year of Castillos contract which would make it fair (and they can cut Maeda rather than Seattle doing it).
stymeedone
Why? Tigers can afford Castillo’s contract. Unless Maeda is going back to Seattle, he shouldn’t effect this trade.
stymeedone
Do you really want the 3B position in Detroit being covered by a tag team again? Unless they get another 3B, Jung is needed in Motown.
Motor City Beach Bum
I’d say that trade only happens if the Tigers get Bregman or maybe Kim. I like the trade: Jung and Tork for Castillo. The Mariners would be betting on upside and filling two spots of need. Tork is a year removed from 30 HRs and maybe Seitzer would have better luck with him. He can split tine with Raley. Jung is a top 100 prospect who will hit and is MLB ready, although his glove is a work in progress at 3B and profiles best at 2B. And…the salary is minimal and they can spend that $15 million elsewhere.

Cole Young’s minor league numbers make him look like a younger version of Ryan Bliss. So why is Bliss is guy who will just keep 2nd base warm while Young is the long term fix?
Ragnarok
Age and draft position.
He has a nice approach but if there’s no more pop in his bat then I don’t think he’s going to be much. This is a big year for him.
momTurphy
Hard to compare their stats in the minors. Bliss struggled in A ball while Young tore it up. Young hasn’t played triple A. And the Texas league is very hitter friendly…except at Dickey-Stephens. Bliss was playing in Amarillo there.
jumps
The big issue is all of these guys (minus Bohm & Baty) are stop gaps. They don’t help long term as they’re older or previously injured FAs likely getting 1 year deals or in Castillo’s case, another rental.
Once Bregman or Alonso come off the board, there will probably be more movement and we might get some deals. Ownership isn’t going to green light major FA money. Moncada is the big FA gamble they could take in terms of risk. Iglesias is safe but won’t put up those numbers again.
Kim won’t even be ready until May or June, so they won’t offer him big money when he can’t start the season. If Alonso goes back to NY, then Baty makes sense but don’t know if the Mets will sell low on him?
The Bohm fit just feels natural. He’s cheap and under control for 2 years. Doubles hitter with low chase rates, he’d do well in that park. His D isn’t great but he also isn’t awful. That counteroffer from PHI just doesn’t seem real. Either, the Phillies tried to make it a bigger package for one of those pitchers or Dombrowski said that as a basically f you, we aren’t trading him.
That Phillies trade for Luzardo shows they were looking for a younger, controllable starter. So that lends some credence to the Kirby/Gilbert targets. But what could get Philly to move him? They really want to improve their offense but Bohm was one of their better hitters. Maybe a CF or a young SS? But Seattle doesn’t really have that. It might take some sort of 3 way trade where Seattle moves some prospects or other pieces to a 3rd team that moves a player Philly wants there and then Bohm to Seattle.
At least that’s better than Turner & Moncada. Just can’t believe with that special of a rotation, they refuse to put any extra money into fortifying that lineup.
Ragnarok
Well every time Jerry spends money on the offense it’s a total disaster……
Haniger, Polanco, and Garver got paid a lot of money to suck
wayneroo
So what would you have him do to improve the offense then?

“Doubles hitter with low chase rates, he’d do well in that park” – Statcast park factors show T-Mobile as the worst park for doubles over the past three seasons.

“Doubles hitter with low chase rates,”
He’s average at best on the chase rates. He was well below average in 2022 and 2023 (percentiles in the 30s), barely above average in 2024 (58th percentile). His 2024 stats were buoyed by his incredible March/April stats. 91 OPS+ in the second half and got so bad at the end of the season (.460 OPS his last 20 games) they benched him in Game 2.

highflyballintorightfield
Kike’ Hernandez was probably waiting on the Dodgers but he’ll need a place to land. Might not be ideal if the Mariners are really serious about limiting strikeouts, but he plays a pretty good 3B and will be easy to flip to a playoff contender at the deadline if it doesn’t work out.
BabyBoyBlueDiamond
I’d wager they don’t do anything mentioned.
draker
Of the players mentioned in this article Iglesias seems to be the guy.
Zippy the Pinhead
If the pool is anyone listed in this article except Bregman or Arenado, then why even try? Shenton can hit .200/.270/.400 just like the rest of them. Kim might be a nice pickup, but he won’t be ready until May, which means July, and he’s not going to have the arm strength for 3B. And just let Raley play every day, with JT as the full-time DH. DFA Haniger and eat the sunk cost.
Mystic Rhythms
What ever other moves they make, please DFA Haniger.
I don’t care if every other OF on the roster gets hurt, I don’t want to watch Haniger chase awful pitches any more.

Mariners are blowing their contention window. I’d recommend, as with the Blue Jays, to sell off their assets if they’re not going to try and contend during their window. Other teams need the resources if the M’s want to wallow in the depths of mediocracy.

Call the Rockies. Ryan McMahon can manage a near league average lefty bat with GG level defense at both 3rd and 2nd (and 1st for that matter). They’d want prospects back not major leaguers.
zoinksscoob
McMahon is not available. For some reason, the Rockies see him as their “anchor” player. I’ve actually confirmed this from a source in the M’s front office.
Ragnarok
Rockies don’t make any sense but I don’t see a ton of appeal in McMahon.
He’s not incredibly cheap and he strikes out nearly 200 times a year. Take him out of Coors and he might be another step below average offensively.
Easy pass for me.
NashvilleJeff
@zoink: Seems odd that they’d feel that way about McMahon w/Tovar on the roster.
Zippy the Pinhead
A member of the Rockies? Doesn’t anyone remember Vinny Castilla?
muskie73
Last year Ryan McMahon matched his career wRC+ of 89.
McMahon, who is owed $44 million through 2027, is not a “near league average” hitter.
The good glove is inadequate compensation for the weak bat.

Twins are looking to shed payroll, so let’s offer Bryce Miller, Harry Ford and Dylan Moore, for Pablo Lopez (18m per yr through 2027) and 3B Royce Miller. We spend our 15m on this one move, but gain a legit 3B and controlled and proven starter. If we can muster a few million , take a one yr flyer on moncado or iglesias to play second.

I like Casey Schmitt, but he’s blocked at 3rd base as his defense is wasted at 2nd base, he doesn’t have a ton of value but could be of interest to the Mariners and the Giants and Mariners love trading with each other
longoverdue1977
Fire Jerry Dip-oto. He has no talent for building a good roster. Stop using the excuse of ownership not spending enough.
Optimistic M's Guy
Fire the guy who has built the best farm system in baseball, assembled the best starting rotation, has a top 5 bullpen staff and is trying to compete in a division with texas and houston both having over 230 mil in payroll and him having less than 155. Ok…. how does that make sense again?
stymeedone
Is he really responsible for the pitching, or is it just the ballpark factor?
momTurphy
The funny thing with ballpark factors in Seattle is that it’s often quoted as the reason hitting is so bad, but never used to imply that maybe the pitching isn’t quite as special as it’s made to seem. A 2.85 ERA at home is all time great levels. The 4.18 on the road isn’t something a team should trade their farm for Castillo over.
Astros_fan_in_Aus
Stories keep surfacing saying “the Mariners are interested in” or “the Mariners are looking to fill” etc, etc, but then……nothing.
That must get very frustrating for Mariners fans.
momTurphy
December 28, January 5, and January 29 were the dates of their three big offseason moves last year. People are just bored especially after a tease of a Seahawks season. The holes in the lineup only exist for a half season or so before being filled internally.
Zippy the Pinhead
Oh mom, you forgot that they had a cruddy last off-season, too.
ericl
Is the Phillies asking price for Bohm a little high? Probably. However, the problem for them is that they don’t have a replacement for him. Miller isn’t close to being ready. Sosa isn’t giving you .280 & 97 RBI’s & that would mean a big hit to the offense. The Phillies aren’t signing Bregman because they’re already $7-8 million over the competitive balance tax. Unless someone overpays for Bohm, I think it is likely he starts the year with the Phils
willthethrill22
The Giants, frequent trade partners with the Mariners, happen to have a few options sitting around. I’m surprised they weren’t mentioned in this article. With Matt Chapman’s multi year contract, the Giants don’t really NEED Casey Schmitt, David Villar, or Brett Wisely. The first two are primarily 3B and the last is more of a utility type who sometimes plays the position. Maybe there’s a trade fit here???
azcm2511
Dejong – “managed to hit a respectable .227/.276/.427 (95 wRC+) in 139 games”
Baty – “hit just .229/.306/.327 (83 wRC+) in 50 games”
Why is Dejongs stats “respectable” but Baty is not? Doesn’t seem to me to be much difference between the two. The writer seems to have some sort of bias for Baty. If I were in the position to choose between the two, I would certainly choose the younger guy with growth potential over the older guy who has already peaked and is slowly rolling down hill.
momTurphy
Acquisition cost. DeJong has proven he can hit and defend in the majors and will cost maybe 3-4M at the most. Baty will cost 1M, and a decent prospect and still hasn’t proven his ability at the major league level. Anybody would prefer Baty over DeJong, but that includes the Mets.
PTkirk
Why not go get Casey Schmitt from SF? Blocked by chapman but an elite gielder who can hit a little too. Him and wade coukd be a package.

Two things come to mind. Seattle is not on his trade list and the Cards would have to eat most of his current contract. Neither of which is likely to happen.

Ramon Urias is a stud at 3rd and is an extra piece for the Os. Maybe circle back to a Mountcastle and Urias for Castillo deal
Atloriolesfan
That would be a win win deal. DiPoto only does win lose deals. Westburg and Mayo or hang up the phone.
Elias will just do a win win deal with Falvey for Pablo Lopez.
budman3 2
A trade with the Rays makes sense. Trade for Diaz to get a contact lead-off hitter (much better than Crawford),who has a 15% KO rate, hits the ball hard at 50%, an career OBP of.375., has gap power (though not HR’s) and plays an average 1st base (or 3rd).
Send them Harry Ford who’s not making the team for two years with Raleigh around without a change of position and add Micheal Morales as a mid tier pitching prospect whom the Rays could develop as a decent starter down the road.
It actually makes too much sense which is why it won’t happen.
BigRedMachine
I agree with you Budman, makes tremendous sense. While I like that my team has not traded from its talented pitching staff and while I am beating a dead horse with this comment, it kills me that ownership will not recognize an amazing opportunity and commit to more spending this year while you have this staff and make a run at the pennant. That being said because the Mariners have not done one single thing to improve the ball club for 2025 thus far, teams must know that they are over a barrel and the price of trading with them for a 3b, 1b, or 2b just went up….Just a guess. Hope they can make two quality trades, if there are no more strong free agents at infield positions to spend money on, go get one of the many back end relivers still available and sure up that bullpen.
Hawktattoo

If they can get Moancada on a 1 year deal, I would be alright with that. Maybe he even learns to play some 1st base. I still really like Brendan Rodgers, and maybe he can play some 3rd? He use to be a shortstop, so it shouldn’t be a problem.

Mariners and Mets. Luis Castillo for Mark Veintos,3B, Clay Holmes SP ($13M) and Brandon Sproat (AAA-SP). The Mets get to upgrade their pitching. The M’s get their 3B of the future. The Met’s don’t need Vientos if they resign Pete Alonso.

Nolan Arenado has $74M and 3 yrs left on his current contract. Colorado is paying $10M. St Louis would pay around $15-20M of it. So, you could get Arenado for 3 yrs somewhere in the neighborhood of $45-50M averaging out to $15-17M per year. His shoulder and back have healed and he’s ready to bounce back as the elite defender and decent power hitter. He’d be great in the 5 spot and solidify their infield defense.
Seattle could ship a minor league starting pitcher (e.g. Michael Morales) to the Cards – it wouldn’t take much b/c the GM is desperate to trade him on orders from the owner.
Why it’s not a good fit: Arenado’s power has dropped off and Seattle is worse than Busch Stadium for power hitters. Would he consider Seattle? I personally believe he would, but with Nolan you just never know.
crestonguy
Boom would be option one for me, Arenado option two. And I’d work on Casas too.
Hawktattoo
Last thing Mariners need is a you never know player. Have plenty now
YankeesBleacherCreature
If you believe that in Arenado, the Cards should have every reason to keep him or not eat any salary in a trade while getting a good prospect or two in return.

Mariners could trade the Padres for Machado, dont think they would mind and it’ll save them money in the long term.
Hawktattoo
Would help the Padres..not Mariners. His annual contract jumps to 40 million in 2027…why would Mariners pay that?
JoeBrady
Why wouldn’t you just sign Bregman for half the price?
The Virus
I would want Bohm. Guy hits doubles and drives in runs. Tired of the weak offense. Just give them one of those two pitchers they want. Then sign verlander and Scherzer and let’s see what happens
kwolf68
No chance in hell bohm is worth either of those two pitchers.
GarryHarris
The Mariners have help coming in MiLB. Probably A+ and AA. I’m OK with a platoon. Their acquisitions last year were duds, generally.
oldgfan
Casey Schmitt, Lamont Wade, Tristan Beck for Luis Castillo.
Ketch
The Mariners turned down Triston Casas for Castillo. Think they did so because he just wasn’t bland enough?
oldsiwash
Yes. This fills at least 2 of the Mariners’ infield holes. Castillo is owed something like 72M, though, so the salaries of those 3 is still much less. Add in Doval for the Mariners pitching development team to fix. Giants are fine with Walker closing. Also, I’d start by asking for Roupp or even Birdsong before accepting Beck. The pitcher coming back needs to be better than Emerson Hancock..
oldgfan
No Doval but will toss in Randy Rodriguez, who has Doval like potential.
They won’t go Roupp or Birdsong and would probably counter with Winn.
Brettlez
Mariners aren’t doing this without get a lower end SP back. They would have just taken the Casas deal. Mariners want impact INF, #5ish SP, and to save money. I honestly don’t see him getting traded.

Good power hitters don’t go to Seattle unless it’s their last contract or their last option. The stats don’t lie…it’s definitely a pitchers park. But singles hitters will thrive there. I’d call San Diego and get someone on base.

Seems like shopping for good plate approach, contact, and line drives is the way to go in that ballpark. If fly balls turn into warning track outs, they may have to score runs the hard way by stringing hits together. At least finding guys who can hit hard line drives gives you extra base power. That’s probably why Turner worked out okay there. Bohm doesn’t strike out and has a 23% line drive rate for his career. It’s a good roster fit, but maybe not trade partner fit. A few of the better line drive guys last year were already tried in Seattle and didn’t work out though. Suarez and Polanco specifically. That probably had more to do with the elevated K rates though. DeJong is similar. Decent line drive rate, but terrible contact rates. Bo Bichette fits the offensive profile but I doubt he has the hands for 3B. Could one of the other infielders slide over?
O1Scamp
Kyle Seager might still be better than any candidate mentioned here. Might want to go see what he’s doing these days…

Nick Madrigal has experience at third and second. Though his health is a question mark the size of Moncada’s, and he doesn’t offer power, he would still strengthen Seattle’s bench if nothing else.
