As the start of Spring Training creeps ever closer, here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on headed into the weekend:
1. Bregman’s market heating up?
After Houston acquired Christian Walker and Isaac Paredes to handle the infield corners earlier this winter, it seemed difficult to imagine Alex Bregman returning to the only club he’s known to this point in his career. That door may not be closed, however. The Astros have not only not ruled out a reunion with third baseman but have actually kept their previous six-year, $156MM offer on the table as the offseason has progressed. Adding Bregman back to the mix would create a bit of a logjam in the infield, but it’s possible that could be addressed by moving either Paredes or even Jose Altuve to the outfield.
Renewed rumors of a reunion between Bregman and the Astros could increase the pressure on other teams interested in the infielder to make a move. The Tigers, Red Sox, and Blue Jays have all shown real interest in Bregman’s services at various points in the offseason, though in recent weeks Boston has been connected as much to Nolan Arenado as to Bregman, Toronto signed Anthony Santander to ease their need for a big bat, and Detroit’s negotiations with the third baseman have seemingly begun to stall out. Will all of that be enough to keep Bregman in Houston?
2. Movement on Alonso’s market?
Conflicting reports emerged yesterday regarding the status of contract talks between the Blue Jays and first baseman Pete Alonso. SNY’s Andy Martino and Newsday’s Tim Healey both indicated that talks have begun to advance, while Shi Davidi and Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet suggested there hadn’t been noteworthy movement. Toronto’s interest in Alonso isn’t new, as there were reports connecting the two sides earlier this month alongside other clubs like the Red Sox, Giants, and Angels. The Jays and other alternative suitors for Alonso began to get more attention last week when Alonso declined a three-year offer from the Mets, prompting them to begin to pivot to other additions as they braced for Alonso to sign elsewhere.
Adding Alonso to the lineup alongside Santander and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. would improve Toronto’s offense in a hurry, although even with the DH available it’s easy to imagine the Jays’ defense suffering if Guerrero moves over to third on days where Santander or another player is DHing and Alonso plays first base. Notably, it seems likely that the Blue Jays would only be able to fit one of Alonso or Bregman into their lineup. With some signs from both markets that things could be heating up, will Toronto be able to add another significant bat?
3. Rockies Fest this weekend:
The Rockies are hosting their annual Rockies Fest fan event tomorrow at Coors Field. A number of the organization’s top players are expected to be present for the event including Ezequiel Tovar, Brenton Doyle, and Ryan McMahon as well as top prospects Chase Dollander and Zac Veen. Recently retired outfielder Charlie Blackmon is also set to be in attendance. Those players will be available for autographs and Q&A sessions, with other attractions including access to clubhouses and broadcast booths. A Q&A session regarding the team’s outlook is also on the schedule, though top club personnel such as manager Bud Black and GM Bill Schmidt have not been specifically announced as appearing at tomorrow’s event. For more information (including ticket pricing), you can visit the event website here.
Joe says...
Alonso and Bregman to the Dodgers.
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
God in Heaven if that happens….smh
BrianCashmansBurner
The deferred money if that happened would break fan’s brains.
Fever Pitch Guy
Joe – I would support that …. anything to keep the Red Sox from signing them, especially Bregman who has been awful against LHP the past 3 years.
As for Zac Veen, am I the only one who has in my head switched the first letter of each name?
rockiesmagicnumber
Yes. It’s only you. I think you need to see a Spoonerologist.
Joe says...
FPG I think Alonso would be a solid get for the Sox as long as they don’t overpay. Him and the Green Monster would be a great pairing.
Fever Pitch Guy
Joe – I’m sure he would do well in Fenway, but not at the expense of Casas.
I’d rather have Casas and Devers covering 1B/DH for the next 3-5 years.
Can Alonso go behind the plate?
steldarl87
Are you content with the Sox present lineup? If not, what exactly do you think they should be doing? Bregman has—until last year—been one of the strongest and most consistent right handed bats in the game, and won a gold glove last year. Even last year, which he played with bone chips in his elbow, his second half power numbers were as good as ever. Are you so certain that Campbell and Grissom will hit the ground running in 2025? I agree, by the way, that Alonso would make sense only on a short term deal and only if they find something to do with Yoshida.
Fever Pitch Guy
stel – Bregman has declined considerably each of the past two seasons, in fact his OPS last year was the lowest of his career.
The need for him simply isn’t there. They say they want him because he’s a RHB, but he’s been awful against LHP the past three seasons.
I am content with every position except catcher, that is where the real need is (could use a stud reliever too).
This year they need to see what they’ve got with Campbell, Anthony, Casas, Mayer and Grissom. They don’t need another infielder, especially one on a longterm contract.

Does it matter if those guys hit the ground running in ‘25? Buy that I mean, do Red Sox fans actually think they’re going to be competing in ‘25? They still seem so far behind the Yankees and orioles that I can’t imagine them actually competing this season. The Yankees may have lost Soto but the Fried, Bellinger, Goldy, Williams adds should more than make up for it. And the orioles won 91 games last year despite one of the most ravaged pitching staffs I’ve seen in my 41 years. Both teams seem very likely to flirt with 95 wins and I can’t imagine the Sox, with or without another big addition, being close.
danumd87 2
@Fever pitch – see that take makes far more sense to me. The Red Sox need to do this the right way. There’s very little chance they’ll be competitive in 2025 given the current state of the division so why not continue with the critical development of this young core, making sure there is opportunity when they are ready and reassessing in ‘26 when they have a better idea effete they’re at. To develop these guys you have to create an opportunity at the Major League level. The orioles have been dealing with this issue, struggling to find consistent at bats for some of their young players like Kjerstad and Cowser. Last season they had to trade hays so Cowser could get consistent at bats and he finished second in the ROY voting. This season they had to let fan favorite Tony Taters fly north to make at bats available for Kjerstad. It’s impossible to both actively engage in the FA market and create at bats for the kids. The Red Sox shouldn’t even be thinking about Alonso or Bergman right now given the kids on the rise.

The big difference for Bregman last season was his BB%. From 2018 to 2023 he always had a BB% of at least 11% and went as high as 17.2%.
Last season his BB% cratered all the way down to 6.9% (less than half of his best season). That really hurt both his OBP and OPS. It’s also concerning for his future performance as a plummeting BB% could be a sign he doesn’t see the ball as well as he did when he first came into the league.
Jaysfansince92
As I mentioned in a reply to another poster nearly all off Bregman’s OPS decline can be traced back to his significantly reduced BB%. In 2022 he had 87 BB, in 2023 92 BB, and then last season he only had 44 BB.
Those 40+ BB he lost really hurt his OBP and OPS. His BA and Slugging % in 2024 were both nearly identical to his 2023 season. It doesn’t feel like a good sign for his future production that he clearly isn’t seeing the ball as well as he used to.

I’m a Tigers fan, but I’m more against the other owners being cheap than the Dodgers signing everyone. Besides, I think it’ll be highly entertaining to see just how good a baseball team can be. Then, come playoff time, anything can happen.
Fever Pitch Guy
dsett – I think the NLCS will be bigger than the WS.
st1300b 2
Just remember you pay for those exorbitant salaries.
The billions aren’t out of the owners pocket- it’s the fans.
Lloyd Emerson
Kris Bryant was scheduled to attend the Rockies Fest, but he broke a nail.
rockiesmagicnumber
He’d play through the pain. Table tennis.
Ducey
Martino and Healey getting a “tip” from the agent to stir up Alonso interest.
Nothing more.
BrianCashmansBurner
It’s hard to understand what the Astros would want with Bregman. Moving an infielder to the outfield just to sign him to a contract that’s likely to age poorly doesn’t seem like the Astros way of doing business.
Fever Pitch Guy
Brian – Altuve has been really bad at 2B the past few years, they need to move him eventually anyway.
dsett75
Could possibly trade Paredes to Seattle in some kind of package for Castillo. Houston will be over the 241 threshold if Bregman resigns so they may as well go for it. Although, I don’t know how interested in trading within their division either one is. My Tigers already had him and I personally would rather just give Jung or Vierling 3B and sign Grichuk and a back end reliever and Flaherty with the Bregman money.

Here’s the link to Rockies Fest: mlb.com/rockies/fans/rockies-fest. The link in the article takes me to my user profile.
Fever Pitch Guy
York – It takes me there too, now I can email you ;O)

Looks like we’ve hit the “prominent Boras clients’ markets have stalled late in the offseason so let’s start flooding the media with ‘rumors’ about them” portion of the free agent offseason. Anyone else notice all these rumors about Bregman and Alonso are coming from media members with known links to Boras?
Lindor's Bodyguard
Jon Heyman says, no way! He then orders a triple play pancake special at IHOP while thinking about Pete.
Old York
@KingKen
Pete is cooked. He’ll be playing in Mexico with other washed up talent, like Bauer and Bregman.
Fever Pitch Guy
Ken – I’m sure they are Boras-fueled, but the rumours have been going on for a while and now that there’s so few free agents remaining the focus is on the two remaining high profile ones.
dsett75
Bregman’s situation is probably gunna come to an end rather soon if Houston still has the 6/156 out there. Now he’ll take it unless someone beats it. Versus it not being available anymore and teams trying to give him 3 years or whatever the holdup is. I wonder what Detroit’s offer is. 5 years maybe?
t0bIe1CaN0bI
Thank you guys, I mean guy, for attending this year’s Rockies Fest.
rockiesmagicnumber
Rockies fest is a hoot, if only to go buy overstock merch for like 10% retail. Lots of people like doing the Family Feud with the players. Also they revamped the home clubhouse…last year I think? Real swank.
Fever Pitch Guy
rockies – I hope they give out free Coors too.
YaGottaBelieveAgain
Do they have non stop
John Denver Karaoke?
YaGottaBelieveAgain
Did the Groundhog predict an early Spring Training?
Scott Boras probably scared him away.
Don’t drive angry folks.
dsett75
I can see the Astros calling Bregman and saying, we’ll leave our offer out there. That way you either resign with us or the other teams know they’ll have to beat our offer. As opposed to it not being available anymore. Sort of a good will gesture by Houston and he might have to end up taking it.
pinkiepink
Good god man. This site just writes about the Rockies and the Cubs.
danumd87 2
Assistant you missed all the dodgers and blue jays articles. They’re ten fold the cubs and…Rockies? lol
Salzilla
I don’t know which is worse:
The fans that think that it isn’t the sports writer’s job to report what is told to them.
Or
The fans that think that Alonso and Bregman won’t get gigs. The vitriol towards Pete especially is ridiculous.
butch779988
Whoever signs Bregman loses.
dennymagnet
Alonso hitting behind Lindor & Soto a dream. 120+ RBI with ease, he’d be wise to sign a 1 year with Mets knock in 120-130 runs this season and he’ll get a fat contract next year.
He put himself in an awkward situation it’s on him.
Jaysfansince92
I kind of doubt RBI is still a stat that gets players paid at this point. Most teams have embraced analytics at this point.
dennymagnet
Agreed teams have embraced analytics, but it seems to me Alonso painted himself into a corner thinking he’d get a better offer than the Mets, he didn’t/won’t so he could take a lesser multi year deal or play one year somewhere to put himself in a better position.
Would he be better off taking a one year deal in Seattle or Mets with Lindor and Soto hitting in front of him?
avenger65
The Rockies can have a fan fest but the White Sox can’t. Excuse me, won’t. Won’t face the music about this god awful organization.
