Within the next ten days, we’ll know where right-hander Roki Sasaki will be playing for the foreseeable future. The Japanese right-hander is one of the most talked-about international free agents in recent memory, due to a combination of age (23), pedigree (2.10 ERA in four NPB seasons) and his decision to potentially leave hundreds of millions on the table by pursuing an MLB move right now rather than in two years, when he’d be exempt from MLB’s bonus pool system for international “amateurs.” There’s been plenty of talk about the Dodgers and Padres as favorites, but Ken Rosenthal and Andy McCullough of The Athletic report that Sasaki recently traveled to Toronto to meet with the Blue Jays in person.
Back at last month’s Winter Meetings, agent Joel Wolfe of Wasserman laid out a timeline in which Sasaki would receive presentations from all interested teams and host interested parties at a central location prior to the holidays. The right-hander then planned to narrow the field and, post-holidays, meet with a smaller group of clubs in their home cities. That the Jays hosted Sasaki in Toronto ostensibly indicates that they’re still in the running in what’s effectively the second round of consideration.
That shouldn’t be construed with Toronto being considered any sort of favorite, however. Pinning down any kind of favorite at this stage remains difficult because so much hinges on the preferences of Sasaki himself. Baseball America’s Ben Badler just this morning ranked the Dodgers, Padres, Yankees and Rangers — in that order — as the likeliest to sign Sasaki.
The Dodgers and Padres have been the most heavily speculated landing spots — so much so in the case of the former that Wolfe felt obligated to publicly quash rumors of a pre-meditated deal between the two parties. Los Angeles and San Diego are both still believed to be in the running for Sasaki, who’s also been linked to the Mets, Rangers, Cubs, Mariners and Giants in recent weeks. It’s not yet clear which of those teams have hosted Sasaki for an in-person meeting at their own sites just yet.
Ultimately, the decision will boil down to where Sasaki feels most comfortable and which team he feels gives him the best long-term opportunity to develop as a pitcher. Wolfe has stated that market size isn’t a consideration. He said at last month’s Winter Meetings that he’d advise Sasaki against simply signing for the largest bonus right now, as the difference between theoretical bonus offers would be “negligible” compared to the “long-term arc of [Sasaki’s] career,” which is where he’ll truly earn his money.
Teams will still very likely to try to swing some deals to add space to their international bonus pools as they try to do everything they can to make themselves most enticing, but at least based on Wolfe’s prior comments — and based on how much Sasaki is leaving on the table to come to North American ball right now — it’s fair to presume that Sasaki won’t simply be going to the highest possible bidder.
Trade activity regarding bonus pool space is just one manner in which the international amateur market — which opens on Wednesday — is being thrown into chaos. Will Sammon, Dennis Lin and McCullough report at The Athletic that the Padres have told some international prospects with whom they’d previously reached handshake deals that they’re free to again talk to other clubs. Both the Padres and the Dodgers have also asked some within their expected group of signees if they’d wait to sign until next year’s period, per the report. The Dodgers already lost one high-profile prospect from their class to the Pirates.
It should be noted that while Sasaki cannot formally sign a contract prior to Jan. 15 and must sign by Jan. 23 (the final date in his 45-day posting window), he can agree to terms on a deal prior to either of those dates. It’s not clear of the right-hander is still traveling to meet with prospective clubs in their home locales, but in theory he could make his decision at any point now and simply sign on the dotted line when the international period opens. In that sense, it’s similar to any other free agent; it’s commonplace for an agreement to be reached, leak out to the public and only be formally announced by the team a few days later after the physical has been completed.
As a reminder of how this will all work, Major League Baseball’s international amateur bonus system allows clubs to sign players from Latin America, Asia, Europe, etc. beginning at age 16. Clubs scout players — particularly those in Latin America — for years ahead of time, often agreeing to handshake deals more than a year (sometimes two or three years) in advance. The league hard-caps each team’s bonus pool. Clubs are permitted to trade for up to 60% of the value of their initial bonus pools.
This year’s bonus pools range from $5.146MM (Dodgers, Giants) to $7.555MM (Reds, Tigers, Marlins, Twins, Brewers, A’s, Mariners, Rays). In theory, one of those eight clubs with the maximum pool size could trade to balloon their pool to $12.088MM. There’s no indication any of those clubs will do so, however.
International “amateur” players can only sign a minor league deal for a bonus that fits within a team’s allotted pool space (plus any additional space acquired via trade). Because of the stringent criteria to be classified a “professional” rather than an “amateur,” Sasaki will fall into the amateur bucket. MLB stipulates that a player must be at least 25 years of age and have six or more seasons of experience in a prominent foreign professional league (e.g. Nippon Professional Baseball, Korea Baseball Organization, Mexican League, Chinese Professional Baseball League, Cuban National Series, etc.). Had Sasaki waited two years, he might’ve been in line for the type of contract received by Yoshinobu Yamamoto (13 years, $325MM). Instead, he’ll sign a minor league deal with a bonus valued south (likely well south) of that $12.088MM maximum.

Has the St. Louis Cardinals even asked for an interview with Roki Sasaki and his agent about the possibilities of playing for the Cardinals in the Future???
Is there any “Logical Reason” why John Mozeliak wouldn’t want you to do “Something Positive” prior to his departure at the end of the 2025 season for the Cardinals?????
Sasaki is the right age range the Cardinals are building around for their “Reset”. or actually a rebuild.
Acquiring Sasaki would send a clear message the “Cardinal’s Owners” intend to rebuild with young stud prospects who can compete and contend for a Division Championship for now and in Future years to come.

Not asking for a meeting or asking for a meeting and being told no.
I’m not saying that would happen but it does sting a bit when you try to pursue somebody and they show you no interest.

We could ask but why would he want to sign here right now?

The Red Sox should be embarrassed if this report is true
Fever Pitch Guy
Doof – Even if it’s not true, they should still be embarrassed. Their reputation couldn’t be much worse than it is now.
rennick
Great for the Blue Jays, truly, but it is a bit off that Roki doesn’t want to meet with all the teams that invest in winning, like the Red Sox or Phillies (along with other clubs). I mean, nothing against the Padre, but they haven’t exactly given off an air of confidence. They are trading off players, lowering payroll, and the ownership battle for whoever will run the team is in shambles. It’s just weird that they’d be on Roki’s list, but not other teams who have been successful over the past few years.
snowboard247
who did they trade off this offseason?

Hey Fever, what a great point evidenced by facts and logic! I enjoyed reading it so much that it made me touch myself!! And I’m gonna touch you next!

jakec77
Why? All reports are he wants to play on West Coast.
Short of moving to Honolulu, what could the Red Sox have done to trump geography?
BlueSkies_LA
Though in reality we have no reports whatsoever on where he wants to play.
Fever Pitch Guy
jake – The Mets, Yankees, Cubs, Rangers and Jays …. are any of them on the West Coast?
They all were granted meetings with him, the Red Sox were not.
Same thing with Yamamoto and other players, they met with East Coast teams and ignored the Red Sox …. who, BTW, are located within just 215 miles of NYC.
Logic.
WadeBoggsWildRide
Red Sox taint the milk with how they have treated Yoshida? Milk taint.
Joemo
How have they treated Yoshida?
What outfielder are you sitting for Yoshida’s glove?
WadeBoggsWildRide
I’m not sure they actually treated him poorly. Seems like he was injured and ineffective. It did cause bad blood. I imagine being told something when you sign and then feeling like they didn’t uphold their end of the agreement. Or just feeling like they mishandled his medical treatment. All hypothetical but they haven’t signed any more Japanese players and the one they have is unhappy.
Fever Pitch Guy
Wade – You nailed it, trust and credibility is EXTREMELY important to players. When you flat-out lie to a player just to lure them into signing, as they also did with Jansen among others, then you create a very negative reputation. Players are a tightknit bunch, they talk to each other, they often share agents. I’m sure Yoshida didn’t have many good things to say about playing for the Red Sox, just like Devers probably didn’t have good things to say to Soto.
Funny thing is some casual fans here actually believe a player will sign with the Red Sox just because a fellow countryman played for the Red Sox ages ago.
No, Soto is not gonna forfeit over $150M just because Papi, Pedro and Manny played in Boston 20 years ago.
And no, Roki and Yamamoto are not gonna sign with the Sox just because Koji, Hideki, Hideo and Dice pitched for them 20 years ago.
Players care about only one thing, what playing for the team is like NOW …. and everyone knows how crappy it’s been playing for the Sox the past 6 years.
Joemo
Wade – good points. I think Yoshida (and Story for that matter, but let’s not get distracted) was an awful signing for the Sox. A OF who has a very weak glove and whose best trait is that they don’t strike out, but they don’t really hit for power or hard contact (I might be misremembering the last one).
Anyways, the Sox should cut their losses and trade him but his value is very low and would require the Sox to pay a bunch of it or trade a decent prospect. It’s unfortunate to be stuck in a poor situation.
I actually think that he’d be a good fit for the Yankees. I think what his bat brings is what that lineup is missing, but there’s still the question of where does he play defensively.
And like FPG mentioned, the Red Sox front office has dug themselves into quite the hole with their recent decisions. If the team doesn’t have success this season, they risk another off-season where fans and players have the same view of the Red Sox and ownership.

I think Wolfe said probably not the first day. That makes sense because it allows some time for some trading of bonus pool space after the period opens.

Possibly. I think it’d be great for the Blue Jays.

Having lots of people from Pakistan, India, China, Korea and Vietnam is no draw to the Japanese.
Like Ohtani did, Sasaki wants to make it look like he’d accept the Blue Jays’ offer, to bargain up the team where he wants to land.
Seamaholic
There’s no bargaining up. The bonus is severely limited by rule and the two favorites, Dodgers and Padres, have among the lowest available money.
BlueSkies_LA
What kind of “bargaining up” can he realistically do within constraints of the international bonus pool? Most teams would be happy to give him their entire allotment for the year — but the difference is a mere $2M. Believe it or not, what you see is very often what you get.
YankeesBleacherCreature
@Best Screenname Ever
I respectfully diaagree. Sasaki can help draw in the demographics and sell Japanese products in Canada.
SHARKmapiro
@bestscreenname
Did you know that here in Toronto we have 13 Michelin Star restaurants and FIVE of them are Japanese cuisine. Now you know a little more about this fantastic world class city.
I’m not saying this would be a major deciding factor but it certainly can’t hurt when trying to impress a free agent on your city.
Mad Hatter
Don’t sell yourself short @Shark, Toronto has 16 Michelin Star restaurants as of 2024
YankeesBleacherCreature
@Mad Hatter I can bet most Blue Jays detractors don’t even know what a Michelin Star is.
Best Screenname Ever
Shark, no I didn’t know any of those things. I just did a quick check though, and if it’s fine dining Sasaki is looking for, he’s going to do much better in New York, where there are 74 (vs 13) Michelin Star restaurants. So if that’s his criteria, which I strongly doubt, then Toronto won’t make the cut. California has 83 Michelin restaurants (vs 16 in all of Canada), 23 in LA. So why he would go to Canada remains a mystery.
Nor does the Japanese-descent market favor a move to our northern neighbor (or ‘neighbour’). The proportion of people of Japanese descent is about the same in both countries, but the US is almost 10 times larger, meaning a LOT more jerseys.
YankeesBleacherCreature
@Best
Japanese players’ appeal aren’t limited to only the Japanese. I have NYC Korean and Chinese friends whose kids are casual baseball fans and own LAD Ohtani jerseys. They’re Mets fans living in Queens and Long Island.

I take your point, Seam. Is there nothing at all to be bargained?

@bestscreennameever….
As someone who has travelled to Japan many times, I can attest that there are many fine Japanese restaurants there.
KamKid
YBC, do you see that as a particularly Canadian thing? Aren’t most urban centres, especially ones with enough of a corporate base to support a major sports franchise largely multicultural and therefore would have a fairly significant Japanese population?
YankeesBleacherCreature
No. I’m originally from NYC and well-travelled in the States so I understand what you’re asking. I’m only spit-balling that the appeal could be the entire Canada as they haven’t had a Japanese superstar player. Signing with a U.S. city can limit his exposure to only one single city.
KamKid
Ah yes. I see. Canada is big. But not overly populous. Still, a large market compared to US markets that split loyalties.
johncoltrane

Nothing says he can’t sign before, teams are just limited to how much they could sign him for by there remaining current year signing pool money. He’d be leaving millions on the table.. but it’s completely allowed.
Seamaholic
No this is incorrect. The 2024 signing period ended in mid-December. There is a one month gap between signing periods in which no international amateur can sign a contract.

I thought we’re currently in a tiny window between last year’s and this year’s intl amateur signing periods where no international amateur signings can happen until it reopens on the 15th.

He’s a professional player. There is no draft for professionals, nor will there ever be. There may some day be a draft for the true amateurs in Latin America, but there are other, severe issues with that proposal and the Latin players themselves (and thus the MLBPA) will die on their swords to prevent it.

If he’s smart, it’d be Seattle. He has to prove himself to land a more lucrative contract down the road. Seattle is a pitchers park and obviously Asian players have starred there. He doesn’t need to lock into a “contender” just yet.
SheaGoodbye
The fact that he’s forgoing so much money to come to the states at such a young age leads me to believe he’s a very competitive and very determined individual. And this is just a hunch, but he feels like the type of person who will not want to jump onto, say, the Dodgers bandwagon in hopes of pursuing a WS title immediately. I think Seattle is in the mix too.
stymeedone
A pitcher coming out of Seattle should get the same scrutiny as a hitter from Colorado. Don’t expect him to be as good somewhere else. As his agent, I would tell him that’s not his best choice to showcase his real ability. A pitching neutral park would be best.

Still no one knows when Sasaki will be eligible for an extension, except that the answer is not “right now.” But in a year? Two years? Ohtani, who also came over under the same circumstances, didn’t want to extend with the Angels so just rode the arbitration process until the end. But if he’s willing, can a team extend Sasaki for ten years in 2026 like they would any other young star who’s in pre-arb?
dougsolo2
This is a very important question that I have not seen answered in any of the multitude of Sasaki posts. Can someone from MLBTR please research this? Would make for a great article.
If you could sign Sasaki to a minor league deal and $5M bonus on January 15, is there a rule prohibiting signing him to a 10 year, $200 million extension on June 1, 2025? That’s an obvious loophole and if a team makes a verbal promise to Joel Wolfe that they will do so, it means that this is about money after all! If that’s prohibited, nobody has clearly pointed to what rule it violates.

sovietcanuckistanian
I’m curious what the trickle down (effect) will be. Assuming whatever team he signs with has a commitment or two to other internationals, does that make them free to sign with whomever since they’re being spurned?
Question to anyone who follows this stuff, outside of Roki, any real potentially very good (or better international players up for grabs/whom might they be?).
RunDMC
ATL beat writer, Mark Bowman, is reporting that ATL nixed a deal to Jeff Hoffman, after also failing a physical based on his shoulder, along with BAL.
Not sure what the deal was, but I’m sure it was similar to Rey Lopez’s and would have allowed him to start in the rotation then giving them flexibility to move young arms in the rotation (and Hoffman to the ‘pen, if needed), easing Strider back into the rotation come June.
Whyme
So he’s coming to get some free stuff and some poutine. Then he will sign elsewhere.
Joe It All
This is my thought every time I see the Blue Jays are interested in a player that signs elsewhere. Why wouldn’t said player take a visit to a beautiful city and enjoy its spoils for a day or two?
SHARKmapiro
To me the chalk favourite to land this guy has to be the Dodgers and likely the reason he’s willing to “leave millions on the table” with the immediate opportunity to win the world series right away and play with his fellow countrymen.
Nice to see Toronto getting a meeting. Could just be positivr PR spin since a lot of the local media and most of the wannabe/fringe “media” dumps all over the front office constantly (which is annoying).
But, maybe he’s looking for a challenge on a 2nd tier team instead of just joining a super team in LA. There are executives in baseball who’ve done exactly that so maybe that’s the case and if so Toronto would be a perfect fit.
Best Screenname Ever
I suspect it is all orchestrated by the agent, not the player. The agent likes having a good relationship with the Toronto Front Office. He scratches their back by getting them some big market PR like this, and they deal him warmly in the future.
Doral Silverthorn
I can’t get past the house of cards clubhouse the Padres have with volatile Machado and Tatis being long term teammates. They’re the first to argue and the first to say look at me which flies directly into the face of Japanese players. Why would Sasaki subject himself to that when he’s got a squad that wants him and has proven to have a clubhouse where everyone gets along? It’s a long season. I’m not even sure Darvish wants to be a Padre. Their lone Asian player on the diamond is gone, leaving the relationship with Darvish the only thing that could bring Sasaki to the Padres.
I’m not gong for him going anywhere but the Dodgers.
RotiniRick
You get 26 guys together everyday there’s bound to be disagreements no matter the team. I mean just look at this place…
JackStrawb
The idea, too, that “hey, there’s another Japanese guy there” without reference to anything else that might suggest a deep and abiding friendship is a rationale for joining a team is absurd.

equally absurd is hoping a powder keg of volatility with the players already there can be tolerated throughout the next decade that they’re signed for. The Padres are talented. Not sure Machado and Tatis should be carrying the banner for them though.

If the Padres don’t land him, it will probably be because they haven’t developed a homegrown all-star starting pitcher since Peavy, which was two ownerships and about 4-5 managers ago.

I keep hearing he is leaving money on the table by coming over early. My question is how much does he make now in Japan? If he makes even close to the same as here he is not leaving money on the table.
Him coming over might be smart for next contract. He will not have any questions about if he can pitch at this level. He will not get a contract like Ohtani because of the hitting. Will still be huge. He will make a huge amount of money unless injury or plain fails. He isn’t leaving money he will probably make more by coming early.

I’m somewhat amused by all these (non-baseball) comments.
Very easy to see who the crotchety old men are who have never ventured outside the county lines.
Also very easy to see the unemployed dudes who hide behind the keyboards in their mom’s basement.
And the middle age guy who just came home from his job at the local lumber store to spew hatred at the world.
The jays have a front office that can’t attract anyone because the team is #23 in the power rankings (not heading upward) and no visible future of developed players.
They can’t keep the players they traded for, who leave on the first bus outta town. Who wants to be employed by a losing team?
They need a new front office with a new direction.
Can we leave the discussion not relevant to baseball out of these comments? Just like any joke…the twentieth time it’s repeated just makes the person telling the joke look like a piece of crap.
