3:10pm: The Rangers have also been informed that they are out of the running, reports Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. The Diamondbacks never got a meeting with Sasaki and won’t be the destination either, per John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM Phoenix.
2:56pm: The Mets have also been informed that they are out of the running, per Joel Sherman of The New York Post.
2:35pm: The Yankees have been told that right-hander Roki Sasaki will not be signing with them, reports Jack Curry of Yes Network. That’s the second team that is reportedly out, with the Giants having also been told that they won’t be Sasaki’s destination. Andy Martino of SNY adds that the Mets aren’t expected to sign him either, though it’s unclear if they have been given a clear denial like the Giants and Yankees. As for teams that are still in the mix, Sasaki reportedly met with the Padres in San Diego recently, per a report from Dennis Lin, Will Sammon and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. This was after his recent meeting with the Blue Jays in Toronto.
Sasaki has been on the radar of MLB clubs for years, but his situation became very interesting once it became clear that he would be coming over to North America this winter. Since he is not yet 25 years old, he is considered an amateur under MLB’s international signing rules. That makes a massive difference in his earning power and opens him up to potentially sign with any club.
Per the international bonus pool system, each club has a limit on how much signing bonus money they can give to international amateurs, with this year’s pools ranging from $5-8MM. Broadly speaking, the large-market clubs have the smaller pools and vice versa. Teams can trade for more pool money but can’t add more than 60% of their initial pool allotment.
The Chiba Lotte Marines, Sasaki’s Nippon Professional Baseball club, will also be owed a posting fee. However, the value of that fee will be a percentage of his signing bonus and won’t be a large number either. Per the NPB posting rules, the fee is 20% of a deal’s first $25MM, 17.5% of the next $25MM, and 15% of further spending. Since Sasaki will be capped by the pool system, his deal will lead to a modest bonus, with the posting fee adding 20%.
Had Sasaki waited until he turned 25, he would have been considered a professional and could have signed a deal for any amount. That’s the route Yoshinobu Yamamoto took, eventually securing a $325MM deal from the Dodgers.
It can be debated as to who is the better pitcher between Yamamoto and Sasaki, but the point is that there’s tremendous upside in getting Sasaki aboard for such a small investment. Teams that normally don’t sign top free agents can become theoretical fits, while the larger clubs have big payrolls and competitive balance tax concerns, making them very interested as well.
By coming to North America now, Sasaki has seemingly illustrated that maximizing his short-term earnings is not his top priority. Since each club has roughly the same ability to offer him a bonus now, he should be focused on non-financial criteria for making his decision. It could come down to geography, a club’s reputation developing pitching or perhaps a team’s long-term competitive outlook. His agent, Joel Wolfe, said the plan was for teams to make pitches before the holidays. Sasaki would then travel to visit the home cities of certain clubs after the holidays.
A decision needs to come soon. Sasaki can’t officially sign until January 15 when the new pool year starts, but he also has to be signed by January 23, when his posting window closes. Now that there’s only a handful of days left, it seems he is narrowing the field.
The Yankees and Mets both reportedly met with Sasaki in December but it seems that he won’t be coming to New York to join either club. Both teams already have plenty of rotation options, though they surely would have welcomed the problem of adding Sasaki into the mix and further crowding things. The Yankees are already feel good enough about their pitching depth that they are reportedly shopping Marcus Stroman.
Perhaps signing Sasaki wouldn’t have added too much to the urgency to trade Stroman. MLB teams often use six-man rotations when folding in a Japanese pitcher, as the NPB usually sees starters throw once a week as opposed to the five-day rotation in North America. It’s a moot point now but the Yanks still project to start the year with a strong group that includes Gerrit Cole, Max Fried, Carlos Rodón, Luis Gil and Clarke Schmidt, which is why Stroman’s available.
The Mets have more uncertainty in their rotation but still have plenty of arms to potentially fill out their rotation. Sean Manaea, Kodai Senga, David Peterson, Frankie Montas, Clay Holmes, Paul Blackburn, Griffin Canning and Tylor Megill are all possibilities. There are question marks with many of those names but that’s eight viable candidates of varying degrees for five rotation spots.
Many observers have considered the Dodgers and the Padres to be the two most likely landing spots, so it’s not especially surprising that San Diego is still in the mix. No one can be sure what Sasaki’s priorities are, but it’s been suggested that the club’s West Coast location and strong performance in recent years are points in their favor, as well as Sasaki’s friendship with Yu Darvish.
As pointed out by The Athletic and others, the Padres could probably use Sasaki more than any other club. They have known financial constraints but plenty of holes to fill, which is why players like Luis Arráez, Dylan Cease, Jake Cronenworth and Robert Suarez have been in trade rumors this winter. Adding a pitcher of Sasaki’s caliber at such a discounted rate would be tremendously helpful for them.
As of right now, the rotation projects to include Darvish, Cease and Michael King, with plenty of question marks beyond that. Adding Sasaki would give the Padres a very strong front four, but it could also perhaps increase the chances of the Friars trading Cease for players that are cheaper and more controllable but less proven.
It’s still anyone’s guess what team will be chosen by Sasaki and why. As mentioned, the Jays are still a possibility, based on Sasaki’s recent trip to Toronto. The Padres are obviously in there as well. The Athletic mentions the Dodgers, Rangers, Cubs and Mariners are clubs that are thought to be in the mix. It’s unknown if Sasaki will visit with any of those other clubs but resolution is coming soon, with more information perhaps trickling out in the coming days.
Ahahahahaha
@Fenway
don’t see how you can hate from outside of the club
You can’t even get in
Hahaha
Leggo
C. Brown.
What do we got here…………75% Dodgers, 15% Padres, 5% Cubs, 5% Other?
if its dodgers, i dont see how mlb can afford not to block it
you can’t just simply let the Japanese WBC team all join the same MLB team because they like playing with each other and don’t care about money enough to incentivize the alternative
regardless, if he goes to any other team and wins a championship… then mad respect
if he goes to dodgers and wins a championship… no respect from me
Just Needed Some Good News Today
You’d rather him go to the Dodgers?
From a Red Sox competitive standpoint, yes, as they share the same division.
YBC – Roki should just email a big red vertical rectangle to all the teams that didn’t make the cut …. as described in the Major League movie ;O)
Squid game three!!!
Haha that’s really funny
Have you seen the movie Chef?
Let’s go blue jays
Roki is Japanese…. Not Korean.
damas – I think Roku should buy all the broadcast rights for all of Roki’s starts.
It would be a great promotion, “Roki on Roku”.
idosteroids: To the surprise of no one, it’s once again the Dodgers. Let’s see what that spineless commissioner does about this further imbalance.
There’s not a whole lot Manfred can do. This is the CBA that the players and owners agreed to. Just wait for the next lockout/strike.
@178
Still gluck gluck glucking
Why would have do anything? The Dodgers haven’t broken any rules. They spend money to make money. Baseball’s problem is that too many clubs don’t spend enough.
@drprof
What? Over? Did you say ‘over’? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!…
Hilarious.. I’m watching that right now
Why not if that’s what is best for him?
You’d rather him go to the Dodgers?
===========================
Let me see. Face him maybe once, or fact him maybe 3x. Maybe help our adversary in the fight for a WC or hopefully 1st place, or maybe go to a team we wouldn’t see until the WS.
Of course I’d prefer the LAD. That’s not even a serious question.
Funny part is could there be a mystery team? While Boston hasn’t gotten an interview, they haven’t been told he won’t sign with them…Obviously, I don’t expect it .
Breslow thinking he still has a shot is like when you get a chick’s phone number, a Chinese restaurant answers, and you still think to yourself…”Maybe she works there…”
At this point there is no mystery team, that should be obvious to anyone with any sort of reading comprehension
The Mets have never once been seen as obvious choices, it was always gonna be dodgers or padres
@Ray
What about the Mets made them the “obvious” choice?
@Jay
Nice…
The Dodgers.
Dodgers.
Glasgow
Snell
Sasaki
Ohtani
Kershaw(?)
Glasnow
Yamamoto
Sasaki
Ohtani
Snell
Kershaw
Dude doesn’t even understand the word “obvious” jfc what a hayseed
So, this leaves the Dodgers, Padres, Mariners, Cubs and Blue Jays, in order of likelihood
Until he is in Green and Blue. Goes from a Marine to a Mariner. It is an obvious fit.
Gilbert
Kirby
Sasaki
Miller
Woo
Take that 5 in any order. For you all that missed you can have Castillo for a good player.
Oh and Ohtani told him not to make the same mistake he first made by going to an LA team. He can go there after an Ichiro like Seattle career.
Also this just in Seattle promised they could do something no other team has done. Get his first name on his back.
Maybe she owns the restaurant
Avenger
Where’s Yamamoto?
The Yankees are like the first or second woman rejected from The Bachelor..
Seems like his decision is imminent
Toronto remaining in the mix with the two teams — Dodgers and Padres — that were always the favorites suggests that maybe they’re the leaders.
Mutts out too
How original
As a Dodger fan first the Giants now The Yankees I love it
I’m not saying he is a Padre, but will it upset you if he does become one?
Well said Sal. Cheers
Upset me not really. Disappointment would be the word for it. Roki to me is the cherry on top of a sundae. If you don’t get the cherry does it kill the sundae not really. And to be honest why would anyone go to San Diego right now with all the infighting, not sure who is running the team, racial accusations and so on. The Dodgers are the best ran franchise in baseball right now are coming off a World Series championship season. Not even a Dodger fan observation just being honest. If I were anyone and money wasn’t an option I’d have a hard time not choosing the Dodgers
Spoken like a true Homer, good on ya Misfit.
Lmao…. I legit wasn’t trying to be one on that statement. But for obvious reasons I hope he chooses us over you
Yeah, fair enough. Samesies here!
That’s the thing, Misfit. People have all sorts of preferences that don’t align with others. I, for one, would consider San Diego to be my second preferred destination if I were an MLB player behind my hometown Mariners. San Diego is a great city that has great beaches and is clean, fun, laid back. LA is a little too busy for me. I can certainly understand why some would choose LA, but we can’t project our preferences on to others. Roki may very well actually want that rumored smaller market.
I’m just waiting for all the dodgers fans who will call him overrated when he does sign with the padres
What if he chooses the Dodgers wil you call him overrated?
So you’d choose a team right now that is in the middle of uncertainty? Vs the reigning defending champions? By all reports I’ve read he wants to go somewhere where he’ll get developed The Dodgers have been known hysterically as a pitchers haven. And again the infighting to me would a red flag
As a long-time Angeleno sitting in the middle of the greatest environmental disaster in a generation, I’d say there’s a fair amount of uncertainty here as well, no matter how well the Dodgers org is run.
If I were Sasaki, I’d probably choose Seattle or San Diego, because both are contenders with solid pitching development systems in far less ecologically fraught metro areas.
@Misfit, your comment is “hysterical[]”.
misfit: Padres are known to be cutting their budget. Dodgers aren’t. In six years, the Dodgers seem more likely to be able to pay Sasaki the ungodly amount of money he wants.
With an earthquake in Japan and fires buring in Los Angeles, could Mother Nature play as big a role as the Padres’ ownership dispute?
Known by whom? The execs meaning Chairman/Control Person, CEO, and POBO have all said that they are going to have a payroll somewhere between 2023 and 2024. What in those statements makes you think they will be cutting their budget.
If Sasaki chooses the Padres on the 15th, in 6 years the Dodgers could still pay him “the ungodly amount of money he wants” because he will be a free agent.
I dont thibk he cares. He wants the right fit, and he knows he will become a FA down the road and he will get paid. His era will be better in SD, his w/L may be better in LA. He will get paid more with a lower ERA.
The Dodgers have been known hysterically as a pitchers haven.
Thank you for that laugh. If Roki agrees with your typo, he will never sign there. The rest of your rhetoric seems to just be repeating the same thing over and over. It won’t win you any extra points if you are right, but you will look even more foolish for being adamantly wrong should he choose elsewhere.
So they will be in the hunt in six years, you say. But not now.
I will laugh if Roki goes to the Blue Jays. Everyone will think the post is an April Fools joke way too early.
I still believe Dodgers (40%), Padres (30%), Mariners (20%), Cubs (9%) and Blue Jays (1%), in that order.
Hysterical how?
@Top100
how about the Mystery Team?
Yes historically* sorry. And yes The Dodgers make too much sense for him not to sign here. Seattle collapsed last year. The Padres once again are in a civil war with each other that probably won’t be figured out before the start of the season. The dodgers are the defending champions and the best ran organization in the sport. How will I look foolish if he chooses elsewhere? I’m not saying anything other than the truth if that rubs you the wrong way that sounds like a you problem
If he “wants developed”, then he should sign with Cleveland. For a team that hasn’t won the World Series in most of our lifetimes, they have developed some very good arms over the decades.
Maybe the Cardinals!!
And The Dodgers have always been known as a pitchers team. It’s not until just recently that the narrative changed. Have the most Cy Young award winners in history and most no hitters in history. Why would he choose Cleveland over Los Angeles? Some of your reasonings are embarrassing
Your knowledge of history is letting you down.
ProspectInvestor- but the Guards lost Ruben Niebla… I wonder where he went?
Dodgers pitchers cant seem to pitch two healthy years in a row. From the perspective of a young pitcher trying to get paid that seems important.
Question tho: does any flight go direct from Cleveland to Japan?
The Dodgers have developed some really good pitchers in recent years, but they tend to fall to injuries. Urias, Buehler, May, etc.
The Mariners have also developed some really good pitchers – and their young starters have not (so far) been susceptible to injury. Gilbert, Kirby, Miller, Woo, . . .
I think the Mariners come out ahead in recent pitcher development.
If he just wants to win, no one has a stronger argument than the Dodgers.
The Mariners and the Dodgers are my two teams, so I’d like to see him on one of those. But since the Mariners have never won the World Series, and the Dodgers can afford to buy the expensive players, I hope he signs with the Mariners.
My heart bleeds for Pobre fans who can’t see reality. Where is towinagain when we need him?
What reality aren’t they seeing? Just because a buncha dodger homers think he should be a dodger doesn’t make it his likely landing spot.
But I bet when he doesn’t sign with LA you’ll be first to call him overrated
And he doesn’t sign with your team you won’t call him overrated?
I will say he is overrated no matter where he goes. He is very, very good. But people assume that he will be better than Yamamoto, King, Hunter Greene, Aaron Nola, Nestor Cortes. Let’s wait and see. And he had minor injuries last year. Still, any team would want him. He can be exceptional and overrated.
Nobody needs tow… unless you’re his wife, wallabee?
I’m a Padre fan
And I feel 1000% confident saying he’s overrated right now. At least by Padre fans. If I was a ‘Dodger Homer’ I wouldn’t worry about losing anything to the Padres. Not Roki. Not series’. Not the divison…
No. I’m your son’s crush
Oh, so you are his wife… the plot thickens. Go Pads
I wonder if the Yanks pivot now and move on to some other FA now that they don’t have to worry about losing pool money.
Tell me something besides the obvious.
@mlb
How would that necessarily be something “obvious”? You were whining this week, frustrated because you thought the Yanks were done making moves.
International FA agreements are already in place.
@dug
teams that sign free agents who have rejected a qualifying offer may have to forfeit money from their international signing pool. The penalty depends on whether the team is over the luxury tax threshold and how many QO-rejecting free agents they sign. Yanks are way over the 2rd threshold and if they had intentions on signing, for example, Bregman, then the penalty would’ve been loss off 2 additional pics (already lost two for signing Fried) plus they would’ve lost pool money they were holding in to in case Sasaki choose them. They MAY have guys they want to sign, or they may choose to forgo adding amateur talent to improve the mlb team immediately.
Arigato, Sasaki-san!
Domo. Domo.
Where’s Mr. Roboto when we need him?
@gwynning he too is in negotiations with the Dodgers.
“Now we know you have a secret Mr. Roboto, so we can only offer 10% above the next closest offer in your case.”
He’s the vacuum when our cat knocks over the bowl of chips. Soon to be umpire
Domo Arigato, Mr Roboto.
Mystery team?
He is going to look great in his new White Sox cap and jersey.
Wish they’d stop gathering up all the best talent and leave some for the rest of the league (sobs into pillow because Jerry will never sell)
I came to say the same thing! I mean, since they haven’t been eliminated I can only assume Roki will be wearing Southside stripes this year!
Thanks for playing!
this was a foregone conclusion creatures
I think we all know where he’ll end up at.
The rich state
They’re eating the dogs. They’re eating thr cats.
Ray you’re such a little parrot for your favorite news outlet
Rays homepage is oan.com
Lmao you’re so pathetic.
“I never even heard of Donald Trump. I’m not even Republican. I’m not even a human, I’m a tortoise so obviously I’m not watching Fox News….anyway and completely unrelated but I hate fauci and AOC, and I love corporate tax breaks and heres the problem with H1B visas and all the illegals from CHAYNUH….”
Relish the rumor, they’re eating the stadium dogs.
Or OWN. Big Oprah fan
Oh if it’s Dodger dogs count me in! Do they have Dodger cats as well?
“Relish” or mustard the rumor?
Yes we do… Air Canada warming up on the tarmac ready for a one way ticket to Toronto… I can see the plane from my backyard!
And Sarah Palin can see Alaska from her’s
The Mud Slide state. Unfortunately when the undergrowth burns away there is nothing to hold it together in the rainy season. Prayers for those in the effected area
if it’s the dodgers then MLB should be banned. They need to cut this out. It’s so ridiculous and if your a dodgers fan and can’t see this then your not an MLB fan.
The…entire league should be banned?
at what point is it ridiculous? Yes I think people should strike. why do you think nba stopped paul from going to the lakers a while ago. Sometimes as a league you have to stop this. It’s ridiculous cause then all these free agents are choosing the dodgers cause of money and winning. They won’t choose other teams if the team can’t attract other players
You can only have 26 men on a roster. Dodgers are close to being out of room for the next few seasons.
dob, if you’re the Dodgers and you saw, say, Vlad, Mullins or whoever hitting free agency, you swing a two or three for one deal with a club and…voila!…a roster spot or two open up.
at what point is it ridiculous?
==================
As a RS fan, the NYY were the original Evil Empire. We managed to survive and thrive. The LAD weren’t even #1 in payroll last year.
It’s not even a close comparison. There’s a difference with spending money and skirting the rules with all the deferred BS. A billion dollars of deferred money is absurd. And let’s not pretend the Ohtani gambling scandal wasn’t brushed under the rug to save them and the MLB from looking stupid.
Of course, when half the team is having Money deferred you can lineup 9 all stars and not be the highest payer
@Santinan, hear hear!
Áre you upset about free agents prioritizing money and winning, or because your team isn’t seen as the top destination for it?
Every team can defer. Every team can spend. People need to find new things to complain about. It’s not the Dodgers fault that so many other team owners aren’t willing to take steps to be competitive.
Brady
Exactly. Why isn’t “Takerdbacks” complaining about the Mets? Pure and simple because the Dodgers won. The definition of a sore loser.
I am not claiming everything is completely equal. Big media markets do have an advantage. But the game is entertaining and anyone wishing a ban or a boycott should know they are only helping other sports leagues poach fans and not helping baseball.
Every team can defer (but not as much as the Dodgers can). Every team can spend (but not as much as the Dodgers can). It’s not the Dodgers fault that so many other teams are located in smaller markets and are fiscally handicapped (but don’t expect the Dodgers to rectify a problem for the sport when they are fully exploiting the situation).
Fixed it for you.
They were first in payroll by a WIDE margin buddy
@Twkerdbacks – Absolutely, there is a point it becomes ridiculous.
Yankees/Red Sox would have tons of mound visits in game…and they changed that.
Dodgers and Rays abused 10 man IL and it became 15 for pitchers. Plus, they limited times you could be optioned in a year because Rays abused that.
Teams abused international signings by going past the cap, so they eliminated that:
Even going back, Charles Finley tried to sell players to Red Sox & Yankees…and the commissioner vetoed that.
@Taker
Brandon “Goldy” Gomes: Listen, @TakerDback. I mean, you know the rules of the game. I mean, your pitcher just ‘chose’ me. Now we can settle this like we got some class… or we can get into some gangsta sheesh.
A+ reference KnicksCavs, my upvote should count as 10.
It’s not because it’s not fully true and why does only one city get punished in both situations? Paul trade got nixxed because the pelicans were owned by the league at the time and every other owner got a vote. Had nothing to do with fudging payroll. Where was your outrage when aa locked up albies for cheap? Yanks had the highest payroll for like 30 years and still are a top 3, but that’s completely chill?
My bad, thought you were the yanks fan in here. “I was like why you turning on me my fellow high payroll brother?!?!l” sd and az fans though, I totally get it, you guys both can complain all you want and I feel it’s warranted. Have a good day everyone
@Gwynn
Arigatou
sd a… can complain all you want and I feel it’s warranted.
=========================
SD outbid the RS on Bogaerts by about $100M. I never complained because it is really more about how I spend my allowance, not how they spend theirs.
By $72 million, but let’s not quibble over $28 million.
@Taker
It’s called “free agency” WITH “FREE” being the operative word. Now, if his name was Toby, then maybe things could be different. But it’s not!!! It’s Roki “Kunta” Sasaki!! Give us free!!
double cross-over movie reference there.
Lol at both
what I am saying man is of course teams chose the dodgers because everyone wants to win and get paid more. So other players feel they can pad their stats. i am not even mad at the dodgers. I am more mad at the MLB rules for this. Think how teams like the pirates feel. All I am saying is there should be a limit. Are you really excited if he goes there and the dodgers win?
@Taker
The amount of money Sasaki will get paid upon signing with whomever will be very little money relative to unrestricted free agency. Every team should be able to sign him. I think the most you can offer is like $11 mil. So, in this case, the Dodgers are not using any financial advantage if he ends up signing there. I get it. You’re mad. But again, he has three right to go where he wants to. It’s not a draft. They’ll be a bunch of other foreign-born players to sign, too this week. They just might not be as advanced.
Look man I am not a hypocritical person. I cannot blame the dodgers just cause I dislike their approach. If it’s allowed then they are playing by the rules. Just frustrated as a fan. I love seeing prospects come up and change the game. I love seeing signings of ok players change the division cause they do better somewhere else. I just dont like seeing all or nothing. Almost like went durant when to the warriors after they won. Like seriously who cares if they win again lol.
@Ray
I don’t want to turn this into a basketball forum, but I’m soooooo tired of all banging on LBJ for choosing to leave Cleveland, and I’m a Cavs fan. I mean, I was mad at how he did it “The Decision,” but he was drafted into a horribly tan organization and after his first contract re-upped for 4 more years. Ppl say “well MJ, Magic, and Bird never left their team to join up.” Well, why would they? Magic was drafted to a team that already had 2 or 3 future HOF and a multiple all-stars. Bird, too. Each team added more future HOF quickly to help. It took Krause a 4 years to get Pip and Grant by, and he eventually got it right. All 3 teams had future HOF GMs and coaches. It takes a team to win. It’s not like there weren’t 29 other teams with 30 other stats to compete against.
LBJ leaving a bad organization to have a chance to win a chip is no different than Gerrit Cole delaying film Pittsburgh to join the Astros, Ohtani leaving the Angels to join the Dodgers or any other FA that leaves a non-competitive situation for hours of a brighter future and a chance to compete on a better team. What did team loyalty reward Ernie Banks (No free agency back then) or Frank Thomas get for their loyalty? Nothing at all in terms of a world series appearance. Keep in mind that LBJ went to loosing teams when he rejoined the Cavs and the Lakers and Miami was mid at best.
Wrong. It’s called “free agency” WITH “AGENCY” being the operative word. Now, if his name was Bond, James Bond, then maybe things could be different. But it’s not!!! It’s not!!!! It’s Roki “Austin” Sadaki!! Give us agency!!
oh behave.
Yeah because the Dodgers have all of those recent championships…oh, that’s right, they don’t.
Two out of the last five seems pretty recent to me. 2024 in particular seems pretty recent.
Yah nobody counts 2020. So one in the past 25 years…
He should sign with the Dodgers just to see how much other fan bases are whiny little babies.
Last time I checked the Snakes went to the World Series in 2023, and you want to ban the sport?
Braves it is!
Smart man
As a Red Sox fan, this makes me happy
@Joemo
Hating cause you “ain’t” even get an invite? SMH.
Oh that is very embarrassing. Just trying to take the W’s where I can.
Now as long as he goes to not the Dodgers, I’m good
Sure, the RS root against the Yankees. It’s been that way for thousands of years. This is not news to you, is it?
@Joe
Clearly understood. But the Sox never even got a chance to holler. It’s like a jaggery trying to razz you because the pretty girl dumped you. At least the Yanks had a chance to cop a feel. Maybe rub on her… never mind. I digress. You get the point.
or the Knicks v. Celtics…
when was the last time the Knicks even made it to the finals?
1994?
1969?
wow like 30+ years.
Boston will send u a postcard from the finals…
Shall we discuss Pats v. Jets or the Bruins next?
But he had a Matsui poster on his walls as a youth.
All I know is if he signs with the jays I’ll lose my lunch….and my dinner. Ahahahahaha!
Other than the one and obvious draw, Im still perplexed Sasaki would consider SD. Albeit an easier flight back home, I still wouldnt want to go to a club who’s future is uncertain.
Even with the uncertainty, SD still has a fairly competitive roster and he’d have the opportunity to go up against a stacked team in LA on a regular basis. Great way to show how good he is. Great division to showcase his talent while still being close to home.
Is Roki I’d say the padres have better then a fairly competitive roster.
Isn’t everybody’s future uncertain?
The future’s uncertain and the end is always near.
@Joe says….
“Ladies and gentlemen, from Los Angeles, California…The Doors!”
Sasaki to his childhood idol Jim Morrison’s beloved L.A. confirmed.
this outcome was not uncertain, it was very likely. These Japanese players, they put on a show that they’re fair and giving everyone a shot, but in the end they go where they intended to go all the time.
Look at an actuarial chart before you say that…
@gwynning. I’m guessing it’s been down to the dodgers,padres, and Seattle for awhile. They have the most pool money plus It’s usually a team that’s makes a Japanese players list usually the honorable mention.
I’ll go one step further Huddy and add that the one he’s chosen *probably* already knows…
@gwynning. Yeah for sure we might see some trades happen on the 15th to make it more clearer. I think that’s why cease, saurez, kings name has been mentioned for international money and a player back.
@Raymond you can trade for more. You have to wait til the 15th. Just like him signing. I believe he’s going to want atleast 8 million the padres/dodgers are below that.
Seattle didn’t even get a meeting, according to the M’s insiders. Could be untrue I guess.
@seamaholic. Seattle was one of the 7 teams that went to la. It’s been in all of the reports. Now three teams eliminated it’s looking my top 3 is close. I’m just putting Seattle in there because they always get a visit and third place. They’re in the top tier pool money and not a complete dumpster fire team wise
Yes. They do.
They were told in person.
It came from the horse’s mouth (this old saying is no reflection on Mr. S’s mouth BTW).
We are just “day to day”!
Of course, and thus we try to take the path that leads us to a more welcoming future. When you have the ability to chose literally any team you want, I myself, would remove all whom hold red flags. Set the foundation of my future. Points well received from all others who commented, but regardless, still seems odd to me.
It appears friendship is highly valued in Japanese culture. Ohtani and Yamamoto are close friends. Darvish and Sasaki are reported to be friends, and in Sasaki’s case he’s getting a max amateur deal no matter where he chooses so money isn’t even something to consider unless you consider taxes. Why shouldn’t he want to play with his boy? I don’t think he goes to the Dodgers because he is a rival of Yamamoto and probably would enjoy playing against him and renewing that rivalry in America.
@kingbum. Preller and Pete(R.i.p.) have been scouting him for years that why he had a darvish jersey and talks to him. Ohtani asked the angels to get more money in the same situation. Would you be the dumb team that says you don’t need anymore money or make a trade to acquire 2-3. Why wouldn’t sasaki asked. He’s taking a gamble coming early.
I agree, I think he’s losing hundreds of millions by coming early. If teams gotten a chance to see Yamamoto in MLB before signing him to his deal no way he gets $325 million after last season. By making this move now I think he values competition over money. That makes me think he’s more interested in beating Yamamoto than teaming with him and why I.think ultimately the Padres will win and he’s just using the Dodgers to get the Padres to max out their amateur pool.
Latest confirmed meetings were with Toronto and then San Diego.
I hope he goes to the jays, the NL West is already overloaded – going to either the padres or dodgers or dbacks just makes overloaded teams more overloaded
Kinda harsh announcing them one by one.
At least they were considered…
He gathers them all in a large, open room, has them stand one by one & then points at them, no Sasaki for you, no Sasaki for you, maybe Sasaki for you. Ahahahahaha!
Thanks. I hate it.
No Soto-san, no Sasaki-san…
@North
as opposed to “not even in the running”?
The mystery team has to be the Montreal Expos!
Rusty Staub, is that you?!?
These fans who dont understand MLB drive me nuts. These super teams create these players that only choose super teams and money. That’s why there has to be a limit and rules to this. Of course everyone wants LA. They get paid alot and then they can get astronomical stats. It ruins other teams and fans. Only selfish people want this. as a dbacks fan I wouldn’t want a super team. At some point it doesn’t become fun.
Mail on Sunday? Whoops!
Yeah, it stinks that the small market Yankees are out on Sasaki.
I hate the yanks! It’s not that. If he goes anywhere but LA then fine. But you know if he goes to LA it would be annoying
Dbacks will be fine. It’s great that Burnes signed with them for at least a couple years. I’m thinking he may stay there long term with his home in Scottsdale. It’s very convenient he doesn’t have to travel for Spring Training or 1/2 of the regular season. The DBacks have a good chance to make the playoffs this year. Verrrry close last year. It’s Gallen, Naylor, Suarez, Monty and Kelly’s walk year plus I think Gurriel can opt out after the season. These veterans are all especially motivated to put their best game out there before likely hitting free agency in 2026 (not that they wouldn’t otherwise but still…). Plus DBacks have a lot of good young talent on the team that will serve them well in the future,
LA or SD – I mean both teams are so overloaded with star power
I’m not sure the Dbacks want him to stay there long term.
@Seamaholic – you may be right due to the cost factor (or possible regression in Burnes) but they may be moving towards more of a youth movement in 2026 with veterans like Burnes to help out. I wouldn’t be surprised to see further improvement in Pfaadt and Nelson in 2025 to be regulars with Burnes and ERod in their 2026 rotation.
AND the small market Mets and small market Giants and small market Rangers.
Blame the ineffectual MLBPA. It used to be you could offer an international free agent a free agent contract regardless of their age. But the union gave up that right.
Teams used to be able to compete with money over these players. Now, why would they go anywhere other than the best teams?
So is the plan we’re gonna get 29 of these posts before we get a final team picked? I’m only mostly joking but can he just make up his mind already…
This drip is actually faster than I thought. One a day should be max.
He can’t sign before the 15th and unless its a total fluke surprise there are only like 4 teams left in the running.
yep the only teams left in the running are the white sox, A’s, Marlins and Angels
Eh, I never got my hopes up for this one to be frank.
Sacramento…. Here he comes.
He should sign with Toronto to avoid being deported by the incoming administration.
It’s a loaded comment. Don’t give him the ammo.
Your address has been uploaded and the authorities are coming. Stay right where you are and empty your pockets.
He’s rich. He’ll be fine.
He was not coming to East coast from day one. He’s going to Dodgers or Padres only. MLB is doing whatever they can to promote baseball in Japan with Asian players. Padres have Darbish who is a mentor to Sasaki so that could be a part of why Padres are still in race otherwise it’s been Dodgers from the start.
Diamondbacks are better than Padres, but he was always going to the Dodgers.
Dbacks are definitely not better than the padres
Sadly right now on paper I think they are. But there’s still time for AJP to make some moves to improve the team. It was mid-March when he traded for Cease. I’m just concerned he doesn’t have the ammo this year to make any similar trades that will improve the team. Time will tell… and Roki would help meeting the goal of not only improving the team this year but for the future.
The dbacks seem better because they sign d Burnes and traded for Naylor.
They lost a better player in Walker than Naylor.
They also lost Pederson who as a monster for them last year. I still have them as a positive gain but it reduced some of the gains of Burnes.
It’s pretty close. The dbacks need some pen help. Plus they were behind the padres to start with. Almost every star for the padres was injured last year as well.
Padres will add some fill ins at the least.
Raymond Flagstaff@
Like your “illegal hobo arsonists” comment above when people are dying and losing their lifelong family belongings, memories, and legacies?
Whoa watch out, Raymond knows the names of over 6 nations!
We’re dealing with a real big brain here guys, let’s just all start deferring Raymond
He won’t choose LA….He wants to beat Yammamoto not team up with him
Just give him his padres cap already and be done with this charade
Phew, one down 29 to go.
Only like 7 of them were in the running to start with, and the Giants were also eliminated today. So there are like 4 or maybe 5 left max.
The Yankees have become the A’s of the east. Time to relocate them.
@Darren
I replied with several nasty and snarky emoji’s ok?
Some players are not tough enough to play for the Yankees….
lol ok, keep telling yourself that for every guy they miss out on.
I hope it is Seattle or Padres
Seattle didn’t even meet with him so that’s probably unlikely which is sad because they would be my 2nd choice after the Dodgers.
Sasakis camp hasn’t been saying who they’re meeting with. The Mariners notoriously don’t leak so who knows if a meeting has happened.
Bummer. Oh well
The Mets gave Soto a luxury suite at Citi which cost them a pretty penny. I’m pretty sure that perks like those don’t count although the league would take issue if teams went overboard.
They absolutely count. Unfortunately, indirect benefits like off-field sponsorships don’t count, which is why the big cities with lots of foreign media always have a massive advantage with international stars.
I can’t wait for the Rockies to shock the world and announce the signing.
Funny you should mention, they’ve been on him longer than any other team and were the first to express interest! That would be hilarious and honestly, just the kick in the pants this increasingly debilitated and paralyzed sport needs.
@raymond. Someone said they can’t put extra incentives like they did on ohtani’s deal. I couldn’t pull it up, but I’m sure someone could give him a fake sponsorship.
@raymond. Not saying fake as in made up. But he doesn’t need to do any ads. But he can use the jet to go to a business meeting in Hawaii that doesn’t exist hard to prove that.
He doesn’t need fake sponsorships. He’s got as many real ones as he can handle back home. All he really needs is a Japanese media presence in the city he chooses.
@seamaholic. Raymond was talking about getting a private jet. Meant he can get a sponsorship that he has no obligations to, and use the jet wink wink. He was asking if there’s a work around and I’m sure someone has figured it out. That was a example.
How many businesses does Steve Cohen control? All he’d need to do is give Sasaki corporate jet privileges with one of those companies. I imagine most the owners now could do the same thing if they have businesses outside of baseball they control. Sasaki calls the travel secretary and the travel secretary calls one of those outside businesses and arranges it. Seems like a simple go around to me
Maybe I’ve seen too many Billions and Suits episodes over the years but it’d seem like a very easy thing to work around.
@raymond. Someone could give him a million dollar sponsorship to ride their plane. Would the irs know if he went to a business meeting in Hawaii and partied or just partied. I’m definitely not a lawyer but it seems like a Grey area. How were college players getting millions of dollars before the n.i.l. money. They did that because they couldn’t stop it.
Hearing the Mets are out now too!
So it’s down to the Dodgers (probably the destination), Padres, Cubs and Blue Jays?
Theoretically Rangers, but in fact it’s just the Dodgers and Padres I’d imagine.
Things are looking better and better for the Diamondbacks!
If he really wants to work in obscurity, he should pick the Rox or Sox (White).
Pirates will be the surprise team.
I wish
“So you’re saying there’s a chance…”
Skenes and Jones takes pressure off him during practically all his years. Small market and beautiful park. Just a hunch from early reports about him preferring small market media.
Roki was going to sign with the Dodgers from Day 1. He just had to wait until January to get a little more cash.
He should stop all the bs drama, like a high school football player committing to 7 different teams for his time in the spotlight. Every real fan of mlb is not oblivious to how this story ends
Texas is winning the sweepstakes
Where there are pitching… there are NOT hitting
Just go to the Dodgers already. We all know it’s going to happen.
so whether Dodgers or Padres (or another team), is the plan for the rest of the league to just poach all the probably well known pre-deadline, non-binding handshake deals and gobble up international talent for the “winning” team like popcorn shrimp at the buffet?
because that would be fun to see how Roki’s signing could affect an entire signing class for the winning team in the sweepstakes. not as good as signing Roki but a little consolation prize for not getting his talent into your org.
100%… and the Pads notoriously plucked the number 1s Salas and De Vries the previous 2 years whilst keeping ’25 commitments “low” for a reason. Crossing fingers here Grom!
Here come the Cardinals!
Dodgers reminds me of Durant to the warriors. Then the next year imagine they got lebron and Kyrie. It just starts feeling icky. I’m sure people disagree and that’s the beauty of life. But I hate it lol!
Not icky so much as just boring.
Best news ive had today
Start spreading the news
This is all a charade. It feels like he has known throughout the process that he is going to the Dodgers. Now it’s just a show to make it appear he is going through a process. He is not. He and Dodgers already know. But they can’t ever admit it.
@doug
Fam, that rule applies to everyone. We just don’t know the name of the 16yo coming from Latin countries.
Imagine having to waste all these teams’ time just to pretend like you haven’t been colluding with the Dodgers all along.
Yeah colluding’s not the right word. But the poster is correct. There has been little doubt of his destination for some time. Only other team with a sliver of hope is the Padres, but their ownership fiasco I would imagine killed that.
And this is a surprise? None of these Japanese players are signing with anyone other than West Coast teams like the Dodgers…especially with the posting system gone.
If Sasaki didn’t already have access to millions in endorsements, he would sign with any club (like the players from Cuba, Dominican Republic or Venezuela).
Appreciate him not wasting the Yankees time any further so they can move on to the rest of the international market.
More Japanese players have signed with a team that is not on the West Coast than have signed with a team that is. The Red Sox have signed the most Japanese players in free agency from Japan.
@Pads – I was thinking more about the new posting system that came with Ohtani’s signing.
But looking at those guys, there are almost the same number of East Coast ones. More than I expected. There’s a lot of fringe players nowhere the caliber of Ohtani, Yamamoto or Sasaski though.
Obviously, he prefers the Rangers.
I bet you he doesn’t!
@sal. Even even smart enough to say it’s collusion when he’s a free agent he can sign where he wants. Everything is the same across the board just varies a bit with the bonus money. Plus “bcleve” every team is fine with it might as well scratch the free lottery you found on the ground right.
Predictable he will end up with LAD. When comparing him tonpthe Japanese pitchers, Roki is more likely to compare Meada long-term. I don’t think he has the IVB and movement fastball required to be stud. He is no YY or Ohtani either. For the low cost he won’t hurt a team, but he won’t be top 3 start, likely a 4.
He’s definitely signing with the Angels.
Yea baby
CLE will be the winner.
Dropping like flies
He don’t celebrate Sunday on a Saturday night
No more.
Had to go back and get my popcorn and licorice. All right, you can play the movie! Can’t wait to watch “Bitter Yankee fans pretending they never wanted him anyway“.
What I find hilarious is the notion expressed by many that the “honour of playing in pinstripes” should have been enough to convince him. Talk about living in a fantasy world.
Roki schedule of declining teams his services:
1/13 Giants, Yankees
1/14 Cubs, Mets, Rangers
1/15 Padres, BlueJays
1/15 Dodgers announce signing of Sasaki for 2 years with player option for year 3-7 with substantial increase in $ and deferrals
The contract won’t be like that at all he can only sign a minor league deal like Ohtani due to age. He’ll get like a $6 mil signing bonus then make league min and go to arb like any rookie. Rest sounds about right.
Your data is faulty. Dodgers can only sign him to International Free Agent contract. Its a minor league deal with a signing bonus. He cannot get options on it.
I understand the international FA.
but they can BUY OUT the ARB years for $$$$
lookup Jon Singleton about that.
No big deal..none of the pitchers from that league ever equal their numbers when they come to the MLB.
If he could do 70% of his numbers in Japan he’d be a superstar.
@Dav
plenty of them have had success.
You need a napkin bud?
Reading comprehension not your forte?..I literally wrote no big deal.
“Well, well, well, two naughty, *nasty* little children gone. Three good, sweet little children left.”
Willie Wonka
My money is Roki signs with either the Dogers or Padres.
If you’ve done the 15 hour East coast flight to Asia, can absolutely grasp why it’s not very attractive to do with frequency. Weather in Southern California non Santa Ana winds times is pretty appealing too
Well at least the Meys aren’t getting him either lol.
Seriously, though, while it’s whatever if he goes to the Dodgers, all’s fair…, I think the agent here is a joke with his BS at the outset.
I’m pulling for everyone else, though, first. Sorry, LAD fans.
They’ve been chatting for a bit, it will definitely be BS unless he signs elsewhere.
*Rangers and D’backs are out.
*Cubs out.
Not sure why Roki didn’t explore a deal with the Red Sox:
A) Great pitching coach in Andrew Bailey
B) Deep MLB-ready farm system, receiving high marks for player development
C) Young, talented core of players to remain competitive
D) Plenty of cash to compensate Roki in a long-term deal
E) Plenty of support experience for Japanese players.
Because he’s been committed to the dodgers for years.
Cause way too far from his home and redsox are not going to WS anytime soon.
rjtfd….The Red Sox are close to taking off and contending in the A.L. They finished .500 after losing Story, Casas, and Giolitto for most or all of the season. They have 3 legit prospects on the verge of joining a quality young core. Crochet is likely the best pitcher in the AL and Buehler and the return of Giolitto could turn out well. I suspect the Sox will load on college pitching in the next three drafts given they have so many quality position players….and they have a ton of cash to spend, well below the CBT. If they find a RH bat, improve the infield defense, and add a bullpen arm, they will make a run without committing money to players north of 30.
Crochet the best in the AL?
Did Skubal die?
Maybe Crochet has a shot if he can actually reach 150 innings.
Are you kidding…..he don’t like CHOWDER man…….LMAO
@Prop
Dodgers can offer that too.
I think that answer is coming fast and furious, peeps.
I am sure 29 teams are out by now.
He knew where he was going a long time ago. Disgusting this posting process.
If he goes through the process, fans complain about the process being disgusting.
If he doesn’t go through the process, fans complain that their team didn’t get a shot.
Either way, fans cry. Move on.
The process is disgusting, has been for years. International draft is MANDATORY next CBA along with several other changes if they want to save the sport.
@This One – Just make the Japanese players part of the regular draft like they did with Canadians & Puerto Ricans.
An international draft is only going to hurt more players from DR, Venezuela, Curaçao, Bermuda etc Those players don’t have endorsement deals to fall back on.
Just not the Dodgers Roki. San Diego or Toronto will do.
Toronto…LMAO……no way……..if he said no to the Mets with an unlimited checkbook, and the Yankees no way is he signing with Toronto…….
Yet he travelled there… only old washed up players sign in New York nowadays
Soto is washed up?
Why wouldn’t he? Great international city, wealthiest owners in the sport. Low pressure/big city combo is pretty unique. Tons of Asian media presence. Players don’t care about how good the team is nearly as much as fans do.
Money isn’t an issue in Toronto btw.. all of the above but not $$
It will be the dodgers. This entire song and dance is to avoid the tampering allegations
I’m going to be laughing when he signs with the A’s.
Regardless of the contracts the A’s have given out, this is an maybe 80 win team……no way pal……and they will most probably trade off their acquisitions at the trade deadline….they are years from competing…maybe when they move but it aint happening before…..
I’m going to be laughing after he signs, no matter the team.
The paranoia and cynicism being expressed here is kind of pathetic. I have no idea where Sasaki will sign; but it’s clear he will select a team. The lucky team will not be selected, however, because they are offering the most money. Rather, it will be a team and city that Roki prefers for reasons other than money. Why is that problematic?
I’ve believed all along that it will come down to the Dodgers and Padres and i see nothing that changes that. Seattle is always a dark horse in this type of thing and the Angels are possible but i think it’s between LA and SD with the hope he signs with San Diego
Waiting for the dark horse team to announce it:
ROKI SASAKI IS ALL ELITE
Then again, he might want to pitch in front of fans…
Wherever he signs, I have a feeling he’s gonna wind up as a Roki of the year.
Even as a Yankee fan, have to agree with you…..the Bronx will potentially attract Hispanics players….unless outbid by the Mets….LOL…..but not Asians have not affinity to come here at the present time….no disrespect to either intended…just being real……
Rocky
Seriously bro go EFF yourself with that racist crap
There was nothing racist in what he wrote. Get a grip of yourself.
Here are the things that are “pretty obvious”:
1) MLB players don’t live in the Bronx or on the streets around Citifield
2) the weather in January is different that July
3) you’re a troll of limited intelligence
We’ll all know in about 3-4 days. Hoping for the Mariners but love the Padres’ chances, too.
So where do people think is the third likeliest place he ends up (conceding the Dodgers and Padres as 1 and 2)
@Os1995 – Cubs. They’re still a strong possibility I think.
Mariners and Blue Jays in spots 4 and 5 in any order.
Blue Jays are the only other team still in the running. I’d go Dodgers 70%, Padres 25%, Blue Jays 5%.
@Os1995- Third option is he returns to Japan to wait until he is 25.
Doubt he’ll choose that option at this stage… but I guess anything is possible!
@Die defunctorum – Agree, but think that’s a higher chance than him picking the Jays. Everyone seems to turn down the Jays.
Turning down the New York Yankees seems like a really dumb decision on his part. Why? Because he would be the king in the east for all the advertising dollars. When Jordan played in the NBA, he didn’t make a lot of money from theBulls. He made from advertising. The Los Angeles and San Diego markets are pretty much filled up in advertising by the two so he’s going to be not the second fiddle, but the third fiddle. That means less money he’s gonna make. He doesn’t realize the potential of earned income through signing his name to something.
He might just value other things more, he is more patient than most and he is not real worried that he will make in the near future.
He already makes great money on endorsements in Japan. More than any MLB player not named Ohtani. He will do just fine on endorsements wherever he signs.
This is getting stupid! Just announce where you are signing and be done with this nonsense.
These reports come from the teams not the player.
Stop with the BS and just give him his Dodger hat and jersey. Everybody knows where he was going from the start.
Gives me slim hope on the Cubs signing him.
On a positive side for the teams that have been ruled out they can move on and make an offer to a Free Agent before the sign with someone else
OR pull the trigger on a trade
IF SDP gets Sasaki you would think the possibility that Cease gets traded goes UP
BUT he still might not get traded if they don’t get an offer they like.
(Robert Suarez less likely – there would be no great salary savings)
Possibly Pedro Lopez, Jordan Montgomery, Jon Gray, S. Gray and other trades could happen
They may as well tell the Cubs & Jays because only the Padres & Dodgers ever stood a chance.
Reports are the cubs are out.
This guy is a loser and he hasn’t even arrived yet. Just pick a team…
@Cincyfan85
Guy’s cooked. He’s been injured twice already with arm issues. Jays doctor will probably okay the signing.
Only a matter of time before TJS.
If he has TJ tomorrow he’d still be a massive get. He’s so cheap and so young teams can afford to give him a year to rehab and pay him whatever bonus he’s allowed to get.
You do realize he can’t officially for two more days right? Just because the media has talked about it for months, he’s actually early in the process.
Cubs are out per @mikedeportes (if that’s a credible source)
I saw that, for whatever that’s worth. Nothing from any more official source. Probably will hear the cubs are out soon the rate they been getting eliminated.
Please Brewers, close this deal!
So it’s obvious that the dodgers and west coast teams have an advantage when it comes to Japanese market so as a Yankee fan they have to shift there attention away from that market and concentrate more on South America and American kids because they can’t compete for those players and they should stop trying.
I would go after every international free agent l the dodgers and padres have hand shakes with if I’m an East coast team also.
Sasaki grew up in the snow belt of Japan. That’s … not the reason.
Come to LA and let’s win more rings!!!!!
Come on Os. Got to use that international money
I hope Roki signs with the Padres!
If he signs with the Dodgers, Manfred needs to Chris Paul the deal. Having a monopoly on an entire hemisphere will literally kill the sport.
How?
LA two players from Japan, that’s not a monopoly.
Maybe he’ll surprise everyone and end up in Oakland with Sevy. 🙂
I wish it would be the Cardinals!!
California here I come
California here we come. What a surprise, that was his plan all along to be with his buddies from Japan. It’s just rude to force other teams to make proposals to him go through all the trouble and then just to go where he intended to go anyway. Just for show obviously.
@LGFM – All the meetings were conducted in Los Angeles. He never visited NY since that was round two.
Lfg literally doesn’t care about facts. The world is as he decides it to be.
I agree with others that this is all a charade before he inevitably picks the Dodgers. Let’s get real here.
Wow. This quickly turned into a Yankee/Met/Dodger article. I’m shocked, I tell ya!
I don’t get the explanation that it is a closer flight to Japan from Los Ángeles/West Coast..
How many times during the regular season is he flying to Japan? Is he planning on traveling to Japan between starts?
It’s not how many times he flies it’s how many of Korean and Japanese fans fly.
9% of the entire population of Japan tuned into watching Dodgers vs Padres when they played. Dodgers are playing their opening game in Japan. Let’s not sugar coat any of this. This is about how MLB will generate the most money for the league.
Leave CUBS , DODGERS, PADRES, BLUE JAYS AND ANY SECRET TEAM…I CAN SEE A SECRET TEAM WINNING.
He is either going to the Dodgers or the Padres…if he goes to Los Angeles he will be one of many in the rotation and they are the defending World Series Champions. He is a great talent but he is also a very quiet kind of guy and I think the Los Angeles press would be fairly brutal if he has any kind of stumble but just being a “guy” might soften the scrutiny. Signing with the Padres has its advantage for more than one reason…he is a big fan of Yu Darvish and what better mentor for him starting his MLB career, the Padres are one of the few teams that can actually match up with the Dodgers and they have a very good roster even with the few holes they still need to address, Ruben Niebla is a pitching whisperer and would be an excellent pitching coach for him, he would not be just a “guy” and would be a top of the rotation pitcher to go with Darvish, King, Vasquez, Brito, Waldron, Hoeing and Cease…provided the Padres don’t trade him. That rotation would be as good as any team in MLB and when Musgrove gets back they would be legitimate contenders for a World Series Championship, the San Diego press is nowhere as brutal as the press in Los Angeles, the fans would love him and all he would have to do is look at how the fans loved Ha Soeng Kim, AJ Preller can actually speak Japanese and let’s face it they don’t call San Diego “Americas Finest City “ for nothing and Petco is constantly mentioned as the Best Ballpark in America.
It would be refreshing to see him NOT sign with the Dodgers and make San Diego his first home in the USA.
He’s a bum.
Well, f’m then.
Mariners or padres at this point my guess or a mystery team . Probably doesn’t want to be in the large ny under the microscope market. Then can sign a larger deal later.
Dodgers have too many Starting pitcher…
I would rather than see him to the Padres.
Is he a free agent in 2026?
Must be nice to be a team that Japanese players will play for. Might be time for MLB to do something instead of just letting 2-3 west coast teams get them all.
Just heard the Angels are in secret negotiations with Sasaki and are going to sign him.
The hype on this guy because he’s what, young? These overseas platers get way too much attention. You’d think this was a legit player. Yamamoto was basically a #3 starter, whooopie!
