The Reds remain in conversation with Carlos Estévez, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. The New York Post’s Jon Heyman first reported earlier this month that Cincinnati had interest in the veteran reliever.
More broadly, MLBTR’s Steve Adams reports that Estévez’s market has picked up this week. While there’s nothing to suggest a deal is imminent, a few teams that have been frustrated with the asking prices on free agent hitters have turned their attention to the bullpen. The relief group lagged the hitting and starting pitching markets for most of the offseason, but that has changed the past two weeks. Chris Martin, Andrew Kittredge, Jeff Hoffman, A.J. Minter, José Leclerc, Tanner Scott and Paul Sewald have all agreed to terms this month. Kirby Yates is reportedly closing in on a deal with the Dodgers, as well.
Estévez is probably the top unsigned reliever. The 32-year-old has been a reliable back-end option for the Angels and Phillies over the last two years. He turned in a 3.90 ERA with 31 saves and a plus 27.8% strikeout rate for the Halos in 2023. He was off to an even stronger start last year, working to a 2.38 ERA while fanning 25.8% of batters faced through the trade deadline.
Los Angeles dealt Estévez to the Phillies for a pair of well-regarded pitching prospects. His finish in Philadelphia was more solid than great. While he turned in a 2.57 ERA across 21 frames for the Phils, Estévez’s strikeout percentage dropped to a mediocre 20.5% clip. Despite the middling finish, Estévez still has a solid case for a three-year deal in the $30MM range.
Cincinnati had a decent relief group in 2024. They ranked 18th in earned run average despite the difficulty of pitching at Great American Ball Park. Reds relievers ranked ninth with a 24.3% strikeout rate. They subtracted one of their top strikeout arms when they dealt Fernando Cruz to the Yankees for backup catcher Jose Trevino. A full season from breakout candidate Tony Santillan could be a major boost in front of closer Alexis Díaz. Veterans Emilio Pagán and Brent Suter are back, as is lefty Sam Moll.
The biggest question is whether the Reds have the payroll space to meet Estévez’s asking price. That seemed unlikely a few weeks ago, as general manager Nick Krall said the team wasn’t working with a ton of financial margin. However, the Reds have subsequently finalized a new television contract to stay on the FanDuel Sports Networks for the 2025 season. Krall said that the TV deal allows the front office to “work a little bit more (than before) in both the free agency and the trade market.” RosterResource calculates the Reds’ player payroll around $106MM, approximately $6MM above where they ended last season.
Can he hit 40hrs, bat right handed and play outfield? No then pass.
There isn’t anyone out there in trades or FA fitting that description
I’ll take 2 of the 3. Maybe someone with a shot at 25 to 30 hrs.
There is, except he doesn’t play OF. Conversely, there is another, but he doesn’t bat RH. So either way, as Meatloaf once sang “2 out of 3 ain’t bad”
I have a good feeling you’re going to be passing on pretty much everything the rest of this off-season then.
I mean the Reds need outfielders with power. While this makes the Reds bullpen better if it happens. The money would be better spent getting Major League hitters with power.
I think this might show that the FO is worried about Diaz. His velocity is down while the walks are up. The club has built a nice starting rotation with good depth. Can’t be giving away games in the late innings.
Sign Estevez and then sign Grichuk to platoon in RF with Fraley. Then Reds fans would have something to get excited about.
He can’t. But if he becomes the Reds closer and Emilio Pagan becomes his setup guy, they have a marketing goldmine.
Carlos Estevez = Charlie Sheens real name lol
Not sure who is left that fits that description and Reds could afford, but you are correct that is Reds most pressing need right now. I can only guess there might be a trade coming if Reds can get Estevez by sending Diaz somewhere in a package for a decent OF. When talking about the Reds who knows.
I wonder if the Reds’ interest in Carlos Estevez and Nick Pivetta is tied to Nick Krall saying that teams are asking for big league help in return. Maybe they trade Alexis Diaz to the Angels for Taylor Ward and then sign Carlos Estevez? Just an example of a trade, but it seems like they aren’t finding the right handed OF they want via free agency.
I think Tito knows you don’t hang your bullpen success on basically one guy, especially with a bunch of five inning starters, and has been lobbying for someone (hopefully more than one) more solid at the back end.
As far as outfielders, they missed the boat as the impact guys are off the board. Just platoon type guys left.
What they are looking for is very specific and not many exist – power hitting right-handed OF who plays solid defense. I think the best thing they can do right now is add Randal Grichuk. He must be asking for too much (for the Reds). If they added Grichuk, Estevez, and 1 more reliever, I’d be fairly happy with the off-season. Of course, I want Luis Robert Jr, but I think they’re scared of his salary.
Reds – Why do you think Tito chose to manage the Reds if they aren’t gonna spend to contend? I know he played for them and really likes the city, but my understanding is he really wanted to prove he can win a championship without having the 2nd-highest payroll in MLB. It’s not gonna happen with the Reds doing virtually nothing to improve.
I wouldn’t say they’ve done nothing. They added Brady Singer, Gavin Lux, and Jose Trevino. I don’t think they’re finished. Too early to say.
Fever – that’s the 64k question. I wonder if there were some promises not kept or a load of BS spewed to get him in the door.
Terry Francona managed the shoe string budget Indians.
He knows they aren’t spending to contend. Be nice to add another couple pieces. But I expect the team will be much better this year if nothing else Is done. They had a lot of underperformance relative to career numbers last year.
We already know Krall loves to load up on minor league invites to spring training, usually after camp has already opened. This is the typical pattern for the Reds
That’s pretty damn close to nothing. They have some major holes and instead mostly added more average players to fill spots they already had filled.
That’s definitely an overpay for an average OF.
Taylor Ward is not worth Alexis Diaz, at least not by himself. The Angels would need to add more
I disagree. I think that’s a pretty even trade.
I was thinking very much the same thing. Seems logical but then again this is the Reds.
Carlos Estevez was singlehandedly responsible for the Hindenburg disaster. The fact that a team would be willing to take on such a negative clubhouse presence is honestly disgusting. I’ve been a fan of MLB for years but this is the final straw
I see both sides of the argument. On one hand, he saved us all from being burned alive by Big Blimp. However, two blimps hitting the World Trade Center would have maybe been a minor inconvenience.
Can we really judge Carlos Estevez by his actions 87 years ago? He’s turned it around…for now.
I hate to judge a man for past mistakes but some are too egregious. You just know he’s itching to do it again
If the FAA gets any cuts, I’d be scared he’d have carte blanche. Hopefully he hasn’t been stocking blimp parts in preparation for tariffs.
Scary times. Really hope he’s really turned himself around.
Part of me wants to have faith in him but some crimes you just don’t “change”. Once a blimp blower, always a blimp blower. At least that’s what Uncle Ralph always said. Good ol uncle Ralph, it’s a shame he got hit by that John Deere
Doesn’t matter how large John Deere is, as your Uncle Ralph’s lover/partner, he should have never hit him. Your Uncle may be a blimp blower, but he deserves respect.
If Estevez helped, then that changes everything.
Deere and Estevez were in on it from the start, unfortunately. Just another reason I am boycotting the league. Domestic violence has no place. Unless you’re from Kansas, then you have it coming
That’s messed up. I’ll join you in boycotting the league. I’ve never heard of Kansas, so maybe the world successfully eradicated it decades ago like smallpox, and “kansas” just pops up in weirdo antivax communities?
I’m honestly not sure what it is either, I thought it was a red herring of some sort. Maybe it’s a slur? Oh dear, I hope my account doesn’t get banned
You know what? I think it is a red herring. I heard a rumor there is a place called AR-KANSAS. And the slur aspect checks out, because the article said the “AR” stands for “All Re***ds”. I don’t know what those asterisks mean, but I assume they are up to no good.
What a bunch of hullabaloo !!!
It’s all true dude. Meta stopped fact checking so the truth came out. Bet you also didn’t know Zuckerberg was the recipient of the first rat p3nis transplant? Or that him and Elon snort freeze-dried babies.
Big if true
I mean, it’s not big. It’s a rat p3nis. But those bad boys have massive balls for their body size. Unfortunately, they aren’t as impressive on a human body. Since humans are exponentially larger than rats…for now.
Too much ketamine for all involved
He’s a Wild Thing, a Hot Shot, worth like 2.5 WAR at most.
Winning! -Charlie Sheen
Charlie has actually been a big Reds fan for years. I have actually seen him at the ballpark back in the day.
Reds have cried we are broke for years but in the past have had payrolls approaching 130 mil. If they invest in this team Cincy is starving for a winner, fans will show up. Trade for Ward or Robert, sign Estevez and be a big boy mlb club for once. Or just go sell fruit Bob and sell the team to someone that knows how to win. They have the money. They are worried about lining their pockets with the extra 30 mil like they do every year. If Bob wasn’t turning a profit this team would have been sold a long time ago. Biggest lie ever…. ‘We are going to bring championship baseball back to Cincinnati.’ Show me Bob, show me. Man up.
What if they brought back Norm Charleton, Rob Dibble, and Randy Myers as bullpen coaches/roaming hot dog vendors…the fans would eat that up!!!
When Joey Votto was injured and touring the stadium and talking to fans, they loved it. Tom Browning did the same for a few years before he passed, may he rest in peace.
What really bothers me about the payroll situation is they drastically cut payroll during rebuilding years in what was hopefully an effort to have extra $$$ for when they were going to go for it. I guess that wasn’t their intent.
That was what their sales pitch to fans were. The past two years they didn’t live up to it. Sad thing is, the players notice those things too, as well as a guy being shipped out for criticizing management (India). Probably why there haven’t been any extensions of any of these young guys too.
Spot-on correct. There is a time for tanking, and a time for going all-in. With their rotation, they should be moving a lot more money into the middle of the pot.
Just like the Mariners. And like the Reds, Mariners promised to beef up once the kids started rolling. Back in 2018 or so we had payrolls around $175-180. Now we are lucky to get $140-150.
It’s kind of sad. I have no problem with teams occasionally tanking. But to not re-invest when the rebuild is near completion, feels insane. KC attendance went up 350,000, and I’d bet a lot of that is related to their commitment to Witt.
And I’d bet attendance goes up again this year.
We Reds drool over the thought of 140-150M!!!
Honestly he should go to Cleveland.
The Reds running a $100 million payroll is a complete joke. The obvious collusion happening right now better backfire.
The Reds are obviously interested in Estevez. I think they’ll get it done. As for the outfield need, the market for Randall Grichuk has been relatively quiet (the Giants and Pirates have shown some interest). Arizona signed him for a cheap $2MM a year ago, don’t know how much more it would take. Grichuk would be a real nice fit in a RF platoon with Fraley. The Reds need to make this happen.
Have you checked Grichuk’s stats with Fairchild’s stats? I have not but Grichuck I think would replace Fairchild in the platoon with Fraley.
The ones they have developed, they seem to trade away. This front office treats relievers like interchangeable drill bits. Not a smart approach in today’s game with four to five inning starters.
I know a former Cy Young winner WITH THE REDS that would sign today for the league minimum.
It’s utterly ridiculous that guy can’t find work.
No it’s not. He didn’t just burn bridges everywhere he had been, he torpedoed them. Actions have consequences.
Having the Phillies as my local team I’ve seen him pitch pretty effectively and kinda confused on them not retaining him, it’ll be a plus for who does. I personally like Diaz but I am not confident in him as the Reds closer it just seems no lead is enough and partly because of being a team fan… I would guess Diaz might be part of a trade for a much needed OF/bat.
I hope you are on to something JohnU. Even when he gets a save he usually creates a white knuckle situation. Would be great for Estevez in a setup role or if Diaz falters or is injured. I’m also good with a Diaz trade to get the right guy in right field.
Besides Grichuk, who is left on the market? Laureano and Duvall?
Jurickson Profar may find some extra power in GABP.
Now a Brave in Atlanta.
Estevez was last seen throwing a season ending grand a slam to Francisco Lindor. Costing him millikns.
FREEP suggesting that if Tigers whiff on Bregman they could go after Estevez. Frankly, I hope they do.
Reds all talk no action, we need a bat and a solid setup or closer, get it done, it puts asses in the seats, period
