While the Blue Jays have been involved in pursuits of a number of major players this winter ranging from Juan Soto to Corbin Burnes to Roki Sasaki, the number one question hanging over the club’s head this offseason is the same one that’s been at the forefront of fans’ minds for years now: will the Blue Jays be able to extend Vladimir Guerrero Jr. before he reaches free agency? And, if not, what will the club do about it? The question is now more urgent than ever, with just over nine months left until Guerrero is set to file for free agency.
Even Guerrero’s relatively short remaining window of team control doesn’t fully illustrate how quickly the Blue Jays are reaching a crossroads, however. Guerrero has made clear that he set a deadline for negotiations of the first full day of Spring Training with the club’s front office. For the Blue Jays, the first full-squad workout is February 18, almost exactly a month away. If club brass and Guerrero’s camp are going to get a deal done ahead of that deadline, they’ll need to make a great deal of progress over the next month: reporting yesterday indicated that the sides last had extension discussions before Christmas, and it seems as though there was a significant gap in negotiations when the sides withdrew from the negotiating table for the holidays.
According to Guerrero, the Jays have offered him a deal in the vicinity of $340MM, and that this offer came prior to Soto signing with the Mets on a record-shattering $765MM deal last month. Meanwhile, reports have suggested that Guerrero’s asking price is believed to be above $400MM and potentially close to half a billion dollars. That’s no insignificant difference. That gap in negotiations hasn’t led the club to shop Guerrero on the open market to this point, and the club has signaled that they have every intention of keeping their star in the fold for the 2025 season.
That hasn’t stopped teams from inquiring, however. Recent reporting suggested that the Mets have checked in with the Blue Jays on the possibility of a Guerrero trade. That conversation doesn’t seem to have garnered significant traction to this point, and reports have indicated that the Jays would need to be bowled over by an offer that brings in a bigger haul than Soto did last winter to even consider moving Guerrero. That’s an incredibly steep asking price for any rental player, though of course it should be noted that last winter’s Soto deal and this offseason’s Kyle Tucker deal have suggested that some clubs are willing to pay exorbitant prices for star players even when they have just one season of control remaining.
It goes without saying that if the Jays see a path towards an extension with Guerrero before his deadline next month, they seem all but certain to pursue that rather than consider dealing him. Should negotiations fall through, however, it will be worth wondering whether or not the club will be able to build a contender around him in his final year before free agency. Landing Sasaki would surely help with that goal, and the Jays clearly have money to spend in free agency. They’ve been attached to top remaining free agents like Jack Flaherty, Anthony Santander, and Pete Alonso in recent weeks. All of those names would significantly improve the club, but it’s unlikely any of them individually would do enough to push the Jays from fifth place in the AL East into a playoff spot without significant rebound seasons from established players like Bo Bichette, Kevin Gausman, and Alejandro Kirk who struggled to produce last year.
If an extension can’t be reached and the Jays don’t have confidence in their ability to build a winning club for 2025, it’s easy to make the argument that the club should at least see what Guerrero could bring back on the trade market. If they find an offer that eclipses the package the Padres received for Soto last winter, it’s easy to imagine that greatly accelerating the club’s return to competitiveness in a post-Guerrero era. That would certainly be preferable to missing the playoffs again in 2025 with Guerrero on the roster and losing him for nothing more than a compensatory draft pick in free agency next winter, though trading Guerrero before the season begins would make a playoff run this year all the more difficult to imagine.
The club could also give itself more time to make a decision by supplementing the roster further throughout the winter in an effort to compete this year and then re-evaluating at the trade deadline. With that said, Guerrero would surely be far less attractive as a trade candidate with just two months of team control remaining. His impact for an acquiring club in 2025 would be reduced if they only had him for the stretch run, and perhaps more importantly it’s all but impossible to imagine him entertaining an extension with a new club that close to free agency. The star slugger is sure to garner a significantly larger return if traded before the season begins, but that would all but close the door on playoff baseball in Toronto this year.
How do MLBTR readers think the situation will play out? Will Guerrero and the Blue Jays come to an agreement on an extension before his deadline next month? And if not, will the Jays trade their star slugger before Opening Day or enter the season with him on the roster? Have your say in the poll below!

How do you figure that?
terrymesmer
Huh?
BrianS
he has said nothing to indicate he would not sign with them, the opposite in fact. We know the Jays have money so is it really delusional to think he might resign???
johncoltrane
@brian
yes.

I believe that he’ll re-sign… NEXT off season, after testing the market and finding that his dream contract isn’t out there and the team he can generate the most revenue for is the Jays. Possible but seems very unlikely it’ll happen right now since the sides are far apart and he’s not somebody who has to worry about securing his future.
KingSall77
lol he will sign with the Red Sox.
high_upside
The thousands voted they’d do nothing. Doesn’t seem delusional at all.
Dustyslambchops23
I don’t think Vlad deserves 400 mil, but if you were willing to give 600+ to Soto then how could you not?
Regardless of what happens – the jays should in no way let him start the year without a contract. Either sign him or trade him – one small injury around the trade deadline and he will walk for a QO pick, would set the rebuild back drastically.
I’m already mentally preparing for him to be on the Red Sox
GASoxFan
Why the red sox?
They’ve got needs, but he doesn’t really fit the bill
Dustyslambchops23
There were rumors Red Sox were waiting for Vlad, they have a really good farm, an up and coming mlb product and he grew up a huge big papi fan.
Nothing substantial beyond a hunch, but just preparing for the worst (him staying in the division)
dugmet
Loaded farm system makes them a fave if hhey are in ntetested.
Joemo
I don’t get it when people say things like “they would have given Soto 600MM, why not give X to Y?”
Vlad has had great seasons but has been very inconsistent. Soto has been a monster every single year.
And the Sox don’t have a need for him. If healthy, Casas and Devers will have monster years.
FlakySouthpaw
Sox have repeatedly stated they want a middle of the order RH bat. Casas, Devers, Abreu, Duran, Yoshida all LH. As is Anthony.
Dustyslambchops23
Vlads bad years so far have been equivalent to Casas’ good year. Vlad is also only a year older despite having way more success, yet you call one inconsistent and the other projecting to have a monster year.
Help me make sense of that Joemo, because it seems pretty irrational
And yes Soto is a monster, that’s why he 600+ million while we are talking in the 400s for Vlad.
Joemo
Dusty – Casas age 23 season where he was a rookie wasn’t that much worse than Vlad’s and he will be significantly cheaper.
I didn’t say that Vlad can’t have a monster year, but looking at his stats he has been inconsistent. He’s been great and then average.
Casas was off to a great start of 2024 before the injury. He was a rookie in 2023 and then injured in 2024. I can’t call someone inconsistent after two seasons.
Why go out and sign someone to a massive deal when you already have a good player on the roster in that position? Now if the Sox can free up the DH role, then sure. But there’s a blocker there and it doesn’t seem to be getting freed up anytime soon.
The Sox do need RHB, but the money for Vlad can be used elsewhere. They will need more pitching next year as Buehler is a one year deal, Chapman and Hendricks will be gone, etc. They don’t need another 1B, they need more pitching and catching help.
Can you imagine giving Vlad 40+MM for a season and 2021 or 2023 Vlad shows up? Get that nice sweet 2 WAR for 20MM/WAR. He should get somewhere in the low to mid 30’s for AAV.
Dustyslambchops23
Casas peak right now is 2.2 war lol. So you’re telling me the Red Sox would not be interested in adding a player that at his peak is an MVP threat? And his floor is a 2 WAR player which is all Casas has proved to this point.
Yes Casas is much cheaper, but for now. In 3 years he’ll be an FA, so if he becomes the ‘monster’ you suggest then he too will be in for a significant pay day.
Joemo
Dusty – again, Casas was a rookie in 2023 and then hurt in 2024. I too can make conclusions based off small samples of data.
In April/May of 2024, Casas had an OPS of 0.857 – this was before his injury. In that same time, Vlad Jr has a 0.678.
—
My point is the Sox have an answer at 1B. Why spend a fortune on a guy who has shown he’s inconsistent? The money is better spent elsewhere such as the big holes.they have at C and at SP and RP.
Dustyslambchops23
What does Casas being hurt have to do with Vlad OPSing 1.000 after that small sample size.
Are you suggesting that Casas if he didn’t get injured would have been on par with Vlad in 2024, something that he’s never done, not even in the minors?
Joemo
You’re completely missing the point of anything I’m saying so there’s no use in continuing this.
Dustyslambchops23
Your point is that Casas makes Vlad not a fit for the Red Sox, and your only data point to prove it was a 2 month sample size when he produced a slightly above average OPS.
Yes no point
Moonlight Graham
Not quite. Soto wasn’t great in ‘22, and his power numbers weren’t particularly impressive in ‘21. Walks are nice, but when your OPS is inflated by a high walk rate, it’s not as impressive as when extra-base hits are pushing that number up.
Regardless, Vlad is still just 25, and he’s had two MVP-caliber seasons. He’s been on an early-career rollercoaster similar to Bryce Harper, and he’s shown the potential to be a Miguel Cabrera. (Youth and inconsistent tend to coincide.)
Financially, he’d probably best be served by waiting to have another monster season in ‘25 before signing something long-term.
MysteryWhiteBoy13
Sotos one down year out of 7 was the year he was traded, and his numbers went down after the trade. It’s easy to wonder if he wasn’t fully comfortable in his new home.
Other than that he has been elite every year.
Vlad has had 1 elite season and maybe a second one last year, but those 2 seasons do not erase his 3 seasons with an ops below 8. He’s had 4 seasons with an ops below 820, Soto has never had an ops below 850, and that was one time
Dustyslambchops23
‘Maybe a second one last year’ lol
Why are we comparing Soto to Vlad, no one is suggesting they are similar. Soto set the market with his contract, the question is not who’s better That’s not a discussion.
The question is how much better is Soto over Vlad and how does that translate to Vlads contract.
MysteryWhiteBoy13
You started this by talking about Vlad and Soto. So it’s strange how now you are asking why we are comparing them
Dustyslambchops23
Where in that comment did I compare them?
high_upside
That’s exactly what will happen. He’ll walk for a QO pick. Might be injury. Might just be because they’re 3.5 GB of the last wildcard and don’t have the bits to abandon the season.
DarrenDreifortsContract
Doesn’t matter. He’s going to get traded eventually even if they do extend him..
SoCalBrave
in a world where Soto gets $750M+, Vladdy will get $450M at least.
metslvt17
Id rather give Alonso 125/5 than Vlad Jr 350/12
ReyDay
You’d rather have Alonso for only 4MM AAV cheaper than Vlad with your numbers? What ?
Vlad gonna get way more then 350MM but still if those were the numbers, give me Vlad all day long!
swanhenge
Huh huh, he said poll…
Wagner>Cobb
They need to realize that the Vlad/Bichette era is probably over after this year. Try to squeeze something out of those two and be ready to pivot next year. Rebuilding shouldn’t be on the table given:
– The farm is awful
– The rotation still has talent and years of control
– Stadium was just updated and should not immediately go to “ghost town” mode
I think there’s something to be said for signing Bregman and either Alonso or Santander. This upgrades the lineup this year for a big contention push and also keeps them relevant next year and (hopefully) beyond in the weak AL. Bregman will probably require 5-6 years. Alonso and Santander could be had for fewer years so the team isn’t financially saddled too heavily. They have Gimenez (for better or worse) as a core player just because of his contract. They will need more than him and aging George Springer after this year.
MysteryWhiteBoy13
Bassitt is a free agent after this year, gausman is a free agent after 26, Berrios most likely opts out after 26. That would leave a 27 rotation of Francis, Manoah, Rodriguez, Bloss and Tiedemann.
Wagner>Cobb
I don’t think Berrios opts out. I should’ve specified though that my plan really makes the most sense if they somehow get Sasaki.
MysteryWhiteBoy13
He’s 100% opting out, h lol be entering his age 33 season, will almost certainly be able to get an extra year at the same aav or pretty darn close
padam
Berrios is opting out unless the floor underneath him drops.
deweybelongsinthehall
They’re not getting a bigger haul than Soto but it can’t hurt to try. What I would do is make a best offer now and if Guerrero turns it down, see if a bidding war could develop. The Yankees may not be willing to part with enough but they only have a one year deal with Goldschmidt. The Red Sox could include Casas and if they want him, Yoshida along with a couple of youngsters. While he’s not getting Soto money, he will get well over $400m from one of those three teams (Mets included) and maybe others. Just allow the team a 48 hour window to negotiate a new deal with Vlade and perhaps the offer will be even better.
Acoss1331
I agree, I think that’s why Stearns didn’t go hard on signing Pete Alonso, probably looking at Vladimir Guerrero Junior as a better long-term 1B for the Mets.
padam
Mets are all over him. All positions would be set and they’ll continue the David Stearns ‘which pitcher do I sign for Hefner to resuscitate.’
Rww59
Rebooting is my thought.
Sign Bergman,Alonso,Santander &Scott.
Trade Vladdy for prospects and offer Bo a 14 year extension
Stealing Signs
Uh no. Bo doesn’t deserve a 14 year deal. I’m totally fine with trading him before the season starts or letting him walk at the end of it.
Dustyslambchops23
I’d actually go 16 years for Bo
deweybelongsinthehall
At least she was legal at 16…
Salzilla
Option 4. If Roki signs, he’ll stay.
No but seriously I do think that might make him go hmm. Throw a Bregman in there as well and they’ll start to cook. Toronto has money, get it working!
Anything to keep him away from the greedy Mets. 😉
TrillionaireTeamOperator
Vlady Jr. ain’t signing with the Blue Jays long term for less than $500M, I would guess- lets say for many other teams he’d sign for $450M, but for the Blue Jays he clearly will require a ‘hometown premium’ rather than offering any kind of ‘hometown discount’ and considering they can’t really get any other star power to sign with them, they might as well spend the money somewhere and he’s their biggest star…
Vlad,y Jr. has certainly seized them by the base of their snarglies… time to pay the man like he invented Crystal Head Vodka.
Dustyslambchops23
There is absolutely zero facts to back any of this up.
BrianS
lol what are you on about? You having imaginary conversations in your head with Vladdy to get all these ‘facts’???
vikingbluejay67
This front office will keep him for the season and lose hom to free agency for just a comp pick.
PrincessYuki
Looks like Roki Sasaki is signing with the Blue Jays(only thing that makes sense at this point) so they’re probably going to extend Vlad Jr.
wayler
Yes money talks but Vlad has an emotional attachment to Canada and I think really wants to stay. At the same time, he sees where contracts are going and wants in on it. Vladdy’s value to the Jays goes way beyond the numbers. He’s the face of the franchise and losing him would be a disaster for the Rogers’ public image, bit to mention attendance and media revenue. Unlike a wealthy owner, Rogers’ success depend on boosting the brand.
Dustyslambchops23
To be honest, the biggest gap may not be money, it may be winning.
Vlad can’t be happy with the way he’s had to carry the offense since Semien and Teo left. It’s a lot of pressure for a young kid – I have to wonder if some off the hold up is seeing what direction the off-season takes them in before making any long term commitments. Opinion of one ofcourse
Zippy the Pinhead
Vlad to the Mariners for Haniger, Raley, and millions of international pool dollars, taking the Jays to the 160% max for Sasaki.
KamKid
It’s crazy that this poll’s results so far are overwhelmingly (63%) for the one thing that seems to be the worst case scenario. Entering the season with him without an extension. This is one of those polls where there should be a “what should they do?” and “what will they do?” as separate polls because I think the results would be different.
Dustyslambchops23
Jays fans lost faith in this FO 2 years ago and nothings happened to win them back. Worst case scenario has seemed like a strategy lately
KamKid
I can’t believe how stubborn they are.
Dustyslambchops23
It does feel that way. More and more it feels like Atkins is less concerned with winning and more concerned with showing his brand of pitching, defense and low power works.
demmer19
Pay him!
Deckard
Shapiro/Atkins, with the support of Rogers Media, have backed themselves into a corner. From day one they have touted Vlad (and Bo) as the future of the organization, a message on which they have not waivered. They are now at a point where they need to either follow through or admit they have been wrong from the start. It does not matter if you think Vlad is “worth” the money as a baseball player, we are at a key point for this organization. If they don’t sign Vlad to an extension, this team will be negatively impacted for 20 years because it will tell their entire fan base that they have been lied to and it will send a clear message to everyone in baseball that the Jays cannot be trusted with their marquee players (so why who any marquee free agent EVER sign here). To top it off, they made sure everyone knew they put in offers for both Ohtani and Soto (even though anyone with half a brain knew there was no chance of getting either) and by making sure everyone know about the offers, they have let everyone, especially Vlad, know that they are willing to spend the money.
Put up or shut it: get it done. 12 years at $480 million. Otherwise, the organization will be in freefall for a generation.
Dustyslambchops23
This is nonsensical and emotional.
Letting Vlad without a trade would set the franchise back because it’s poor asset management. No one is going to care about how they handled Vlad down the line, especially when Atkins and Shapiro are fired.
Salzilla
HOLY CRAPPLE, ROKI TO THE JAYS!
Salzilla
No sorry, I got duped and can’t delete. Well, maybe I’ll be prophetic here, lol.
Miken31
Lol. Now I have to know, where did you get duped with this?
Salzilla
Fake Jeff Passan on Twitter. I’m usually good with spotting fakes, but oh well.
explodet
He’s had 2 great years and 4 mediocre ones. He still hasn’t proven he’s worth half of what he’s apparently asking for.
HalosHeavenJJ
I have a hard time seeing him traded before Opening Day but I think he’s moved at the deadline.
Ratherbesailing
I would like him to stay, but the other day I read a story another a proposed deal with the Mets. It had a couple of very interesting pieces coming back.
I think a pitcher shortstop and an outfielder.
All top 10 on the Mets list.
If you had to trade him, get a good return and to the Mets. This way he won’t make it to free agency and risk coming back to the AL East
Kruk it
All I know is that there are more ads than words on this site.It sucks
KhaluChris
If there was a poll for what they SHOULD do; I’d choose trade him before the season begins when his value is the highest.
