The Padres have hired Scott Servais as a special assistant in their baseball operations and player development departments, The Athletic’s Dennis Lin reports. It represents Servais’ first job since he was fired as the Mariners’ manager back in August.
While Servais is best known for his nine seasons as Seattle’s manager and his 11-year playing career, Servais also has a lot of front-office experience. His Mariners tenure was preceded by four seasons as the Angels’ assistant GM, and was the Rangers’ assistant of player development from 2006-10. As Lin notes, Padres president of baseball operations A.J. Preller also worked in the Texas front office when Servais was there, plus Preller interviewed Servais as a managerial candidate during the 2015-16 offseason before Servais took the job in Seattle.
Servais said in August that he hoped to keep managing in the future, though his name apparently wasn’t linked to any of the managerial vacancies that arose this past fall. This position in San Diego doesn’t necessarily change Servais’ goal of getting back into a big league dugout, as it allows him to stay connected to the game in another capacity.
Servais went 680-642 as the Mariners’ skipper, and ended the franchise’s decades-long playoff drought by leading the 2022 M’s to a wild card berth. That year’s Mariners team then beat the Blue Jays in the Wild Card Series before falling to the Astros in the ALDS. With expectations now raised, the Mariners fell short of the playoffs despite winning 88 games in 2023, and the 2024 squad had a tough midseason collapse that saw the M’s fritter away a ten-game lead in the AL West. Seattle was an even 64-64 at the time of Servais’ firing, and rebounded for a 21-13 record down the stretch under new manager Dan Wilson.
Lin also reports that former first baseman Matt Adams is expected to be part of the coaching staff for the Padres’ Triple-A affiliate in El Paso. A veteran of 10 MLB seasons, Adams officially announced the end of his playing career in September, and mentioned in his retirement statement that he was looking to “seek out opportunities in coaching.”
AJ bringing Shildty’s replacement in house to hover over head the way Shildty did to Melvin…
Sweet!!!
I don’t think shildt is getting replaced
And I don’t think you want it to be servais. Sincerely, a 43-year mariners fan.
Servais was fine
In what ways did he put the team in position for success? Few and far between. Plus, “fine” isn’t what I’m looking from a leader. Lol
The environment he created for the younger players and the way he handled the pitching put them in position for as much success as was possible for a half-assed roster and analytical team with a hitting strategy that complicated everything and confused everybody.
It wasn’t until after Edgar (apparently) convinced the Jerry to put out consistent lineups and forget the microscopic splits that the offense came to life.
Shildt is not going anywhere for awhile and Servais will be another set of eyes in regards to roster construction. AJ is good at getting good people around him so this is a positive move
100
He’s signed to give Servais to the organization.
I don’t think a manager that guided them to a 93 win season, finished second in NL manager of the year voting, and was just extended for two more years has Scott Servais to worry about
Schildt won that Padres clubhouse last season. “Just some dudes playing baseball.”
Something like that is what he said lol
I was skeptical of the Schildt hire. He impressed the heck out of me. I loved the way he handled the pitching staff. What he did with a team that went into the season with really only one outfielder was impressive. The players really like playing for him.
Scott Servais should not worry anyone about their job. He did not impress as a manager.
You may not be aware Bob Melvin was a three time WINNER of MOY and had taken the Pobres to the NLCS right before AJ brought Shildty aboard to be his mole in the clubhouse.
You know who is aware?
Shildty…
You’ve listened to one too many Joe Rogan podcasts. Not everything is a conspiracy. Sometimes things are just what they are. We’ll see how Shildt does in year two but he was the first Padre Mgr to get them to 90Ws since Black and before him Bochy.
No kidding. Second winningest team in their 55 year history. Accomplishing that after easily the most disappointing season in their history all while having payroll reduced by 80m with guys like Soto, Snell, Lugo, and Hader being dealt or walking as FA’s.
Schildt seems like the perfect skipper in SD!
lol
I only listen to baseball podcasts.
It’s not a conspiracy. It’s just bad baseball business.
@wallabeechamp Why is it so difficult for you to accept events for face value? Servais is an experienced baseball man. Not everything needs to have an ulterior motive and be mental gymnastics. Try living in the moment for a minute, sir.
It would seem that you’re having a tough time accepting reality. Not me.
I’ve merely pointed out the continuance of a pattern.
And please refrain from calling the ‘24 season a success for San Diego. The only team that got more thoroughly embarrassed by the Dodgers in the postseason than MY Padres, was your Yankees. Hope you enjoy living in that moment, Sir.
Embarrassed and disappointed losing the WS, sure. Losing Soto also burned. But I’ve moved passed those events quickly. 2025 is a new season and adventure. Will enjoy the ups and downs of it just like I did last season and every season before that.
The Padres will end up like the Tigers after Mr ilitch death. Owners like Seidler and ilitch are the exception, not the rule.
Actually that might be accurate
Yeah cause those owners knew that their time on this earth was coming to an end sooner then later and they wanted to win a world series before it happened.
Sadly it didn’t work out, but their replacements don’t have that win at all costs mentally.
Kind of can say the same thing with the Yankees Hal would cut payroll if he could have but knows the backlash would be huge if he did that especially with Cohen running the Mets now.
A good man who was a good leader in Seattle. I hope that he manages again.
Servais has done it all. A baseball lifer. Good man to have in your org.
Servais only got to 51%. Mariners needed 54%.
54% is hard!!! It’s a successful season here when we win 88 games and miss the playoffs
Welcome to Family Feud!
John Stanton won’t authorize a penny over 51%.

Nice to see Servais land a good gig, and it’s a good hire by the Pads. Loyal company man that got shafted by Seattle by the way they fired him.
Dipoto hired his buddy Servais, who had no experience. to manage a major league baseball team. He lasted 2 years longer than he should have.
Need Drew Smyly next. Then the Pods be Servais with a Smyly.
As long as they don’t hire Pat Borders, they will have Servais without Borders.
Heard Brad Hand might be invited to ST…
Talk to the Hand
Oh no you did-ant! Pfft
Glad he found a new job. He’ll forever be known in Seattle as the Mariners manager who ended the playoff drought and helped lead the Mariners to 4 straight winning seasons.
Or the manager who put in Robbie Ray, the LHP who gives up lots of HR, to face Yordan Alvarez (who happens to crush lefties) who ended that brief playoff appearance.
Adding a great baseball guy to the brain trust. Preller is so good at bringing smart baseball minds into the fold when they are available.
