As the Yankees’ roster currently stands, Oswaldo Cabrera might be the most likely option to be the team’s regular third baseman in 2025. He has appeared in 92 career games at the hot corner, more than anywhere else on the diamond, and has put up excellent defensive metrics in that small sample of playing time. In 706 2/3 innings, he has 9 Defensive Runs Saves, 4 Outs Above Average, and a +3 Fielding Run Value. However, Cabrera has struggled to make the same kind of impact at the plate throughout his brief big league tenure. In 827 plate appearances from 2022-24, he has a .643 OPS and an 80 wRC+. Thus, FanGraphs estimates he has only been worth 1.3 Wins Above Replacement in 268 career games.
With all that in mind, it’s no surprise the Yankees are pursuing infield upgrades. For instance, they have recently been linked to players like Jorge Polanco, Brendan Rodgers, and Luis Arraez. If New York were to add any of those players – or a different second or third baseman – Cabrera would be the odd man out in the starting lineup. That would relegate him to a bench role once again in his age-26 season. So, it makes sense that multiple teams have reportedly spoken with the Yankees about Cabrera’s availability in a trade this winter (per Brendan Kuty of The Athletic). A rebuilding club or a contender with less infield depth might have more playing time to offer Cabrera in 2025 and therefore might value him more highly than the Yankees. What’s more, the market for lower-tier infielders is thin right now. Plenty of teams might prefer to take a chance on Cabrera’s upside than sign a known (and aging) entity like Enrique Hernández or Whit Merrifield. Cabrera is still young, still has room for growth, and won’t be arbitration-eligible until 2026.
That being said, Kuty also mentions that the Yankees “don’t seem likely” to trade Cabrera. After all, he could be their most valuable utility player this year. He’s a safer bet than the declining DJ LeMahieu and more of a proven major leaguer than former top prospect Oswald Peraza or current prospect Jorbit Vivas. What’s more, Cabrera can also play the outfield corners. He only played a handful of games in the outfield last season, but he has close to 900 innings of left and right field experience under his belt. That’s the kind of versatile bench player the Yankees could use even if/when they add another starting infielder. Indeed, this team should certainly understand the importance of position player depth. Thanks to his flexibility and good health, Cabrera has taken the field in 224 games over the last two seasons. Only two current Yankees have played more games for the team in that time: Anthony Volpe and Aaron Judge.
mlbnyyfan
Why is he on the trade market? That’s ridiculous. Trade DJL or release him.
AaronJudgeMVP29
Agreed.
178iq
They are all great defenders.
None of them can hit.
Trade for Araez & Sign Bregmdn.
BBSmoke
Just named the 2 guys Yankees need to avoid.

@mlb
Where does it say that the Yanks are shopping him? it just says teams are calling about him.
jolf
Disagree. Cabrera will not be starting 3B for the current roster. That will be Jazz. Cabrera is a bench player unless injuries change that. NY won’t consider DFA DJ without first making sure DJ can’t improve over 2024 performance. His contract is too expensive. If DJ improves enough to be backup at 2B and 1B, it won’t matter that Cabrera is better. Cabrera has trade value for the reasons given in article. The combination of some gain via Cabrera trade and DJ as a minimally acceptable sub is better than DFA DJ and keeping Cabrera as sub.
KnicksFanCavsFan
@jolf
IF DJ still performs poorly or is injured, then they could pivot into Cabrera. There’s no need to trade him when you have question marks at that position. .
larkraxm
You can’t trade a player that has negative value. DJLM will have to prove he has some value either to the Yankees or another team before he can be moved. If he can’t do that, he will get the Aaron Hicks treatment. Thinking that he can be traded for something of value is a dream.
178iq
None of them hit.
WestVillageTiger
I’d trade Torkelson for a young Cabrera!
178iq
In notice they didn’t mention anything about Cabrera’s bat lol no average to speak of. No HR’s. Just +3 defensive runs and a .600 OPS eh, they can trade him. They have several stellar defensive infielders that can’t hit. Trade him to San Diego for that bat.
Robert Nelson
9 dfs, 4 outs above average and a +3 FR value. His defense is plus but obp and average is below league average. He’s young with room to improve. Heck, he’s not arbitration eligible until after 2026. So a very good defender at every infield position and corner outfield except catcher and center
Tigersin2050
I wouldn’t. Cabrera may have a higher ceiling than someone like McKinstry, but he has a lower floor. I feel like we already have Cabrera in the form of a McKinstry/Ibanez platoon, and it wouldn’t be worth giving up on Torkelson for another project. If we trade Torkelson it should be for controllable starting pitching.
Motor City Beach Bum
Go get Jorbit Vivas instead. Tweak the deal on both sides if needed. Harris type player who they tried to get previously from LA. Vivas is about the only Yankee I’d love for the Tigers to go get.
Cabrera doesnt do a lot for me.
Tigersin2050
They also tried to get Lombard in the Flaherty deal. Don’t think NYY would do 1-for-1 there.
BrianCashmansBurner
Outside of Bregman Cabrera is among the best options the Yankees have for 3rd inside or outside the organization. Hard to see how it’d make sense to move him unless they get a great offer for him.
mlbnyyfan
Maybe Cabrera for Arraez, but still, I’m not sure why the Yankees would trade him. Cabrera can play anywhere the Yankees new Randy Velarde
Tom the ray fan
Throw in andjuar, delvi Garcia, Frazier and that’s a A+ tier package
BaseballClassic1985
Yeah, just like Chris Archer once said it would cost the Yankees their top 5 prospects to trade for his mediocre ass lol
Tom the ray fan
Better than all 4 of those names I said combined so I guess you could say he’s 4/5 of the way right…
BaseballClassic1985

Then the Pirates did just that… still hurts.
yanksallday
Too soon!
YanksPhan42
Yeah, because no Ray farm system players ever flopped before. I swear your fans are idiots.
Tom the ray fan
We’ve had a fair share of misses but the difference is we don’t overvalue our prospects like yall did for 3 years acting like andujar and Frazier got you anything you could ever want. It’s a joke dude learn to take one
YanksPhan42
The TEAM doesn’t overhype anything. The players are rated by scouts that go into a top 20 like every other team. If a GM “overhypes” a prospect, it’s called SALES 101. Where the overhype comes from if there IS any…..is from the MEDIA. Obviously New York’s media is 10 x’s bigger than yours. Aside from that, EVERY team have hits and misses. Sick of hearing from every other teams fans how it’s just ours.
Tom the ray fan
Maybe you shouldn’t be a Yankee fan if it bothers you so much. Whether you like it or not NYY have the biggest following in MLB so naturally their prospects get more attention than say the rays… again it was just a joke. I live in NY and heard for years from Yankee fans “just trade andjuar and frazier” for all star player x,y,z etc.
YanksPhan42
Because at the time, they WERE solid prospects…..just like many the Rays had flame out.
You sound like a liberal…..make idiotic comments and then when then people bark back at you…. it’s THEIR fault.
Go back to the Harry Potter board and let the big people talk.
dasit
how many times do i have to post that frazier and andujar (and bird) were not overhyped prospects? look up frazier’s 2020 and andujar’s 2018 numbers. they were both above-average starters who were derailed by injuries
YanksPhan42
Exactly. Same bored children on here typing idiotic comments from their mom’s basement.
Tom the ray fan
Whose the child who got offended by the initial joke? Bringing politics into this like how sensitive are you? Turn on some fox news I’m sure there’s some new company to boycott
Robert Nelson
Every team has those kind of players
Salzilla
I’d trade Cabrera in a heartbeat if it nets us Arenado or Arraez. Fellow Yankees fans, y’all gotta understand, trading our “trash” in DJ or Stroman isn’t easy in the least (neither is cutting them, stop it). Orlando at least gives folks something to chew on.
whyhayzee
Prospect. Crop pest. Crest pop. Cot preps.
With the Yankees these are all the smae.
alumofuf
I am in favor of trading him but, not as a single piece of a trade. Instead trade him with maybe Stroman to reduce the amount the Yankees have to contribute to cover his salary.
Also, don’t forget that Cabrera has a problem in either hitting lefties or righties. Until he improves his batting he can never be a full-time player. He would have to be a platoon player.
larkraxm
Sure, but you need those guys too.
billysbballz
Maybe just maybe a team is in need of a back end starter like Stroman who is making 18m this year which is around the market rate for a 4th/5th innings eating starter. Yanks can send him and maybe a fringe prospect to a team like Oakland/Vegas or LAA fora few million in international money.
Then if they sign Roki they have 6 strong starters but still in need of lefties in the pen so with the 18m saved sign Hill for 3m.
Now they still need a leadoff hitter and 2nd/3rd baseman. I think Jazz was excellent in limited time at third, he has great arm and quick instincts so I would leave him there.
I would reach out to Milwaukee to see if they are interested in dealing Brice Turang a 25yo lefty hitting leadoff hitting gold glove second baseman. Turang stole 50 bases last season. The Brewers actually need a third baseman and with Joey Ortiz at SS and Caleb Durbin likely at second they can trade Turang if a 3rd baseman and maybe another starter comes back to them?
The Yanks can send Oswaldo Cabrera, Everson Periera, and Will Warren to Colorado for Ryan McMahon and than send McMahon and maybe a Clayton Beeter type prospect for Turang. It could be solid trade for 3 teams.
YaGottaBelieveAgain
MIL isn’t doing that
YanksPhan42
One of the last players on the team that I’d trade unless you’re getting a solid young bat back. The kid plays almost every position with plus D, is loved in the clubhouse, has some pop and gets clutch hits.
ctbronx7
Cashman is going to regret including Caleb Durbin in the Devon Williams trade. The AFL standout looks like more of a sure thing than Cabrera, Peraza or the ghost of DJ LeMahieu. And, as a rookie, he’s playing at the minimum.
Worse, like Michael King, he’ll be giving his new team several good seasons — unlike Soto or Williams, who are one and done before hitting free agency.
.
LordD99
Weird take.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Lol. Sure, ignore the Yankees’ World Series appearance and look at things in a vacuum in hindsight.
Joe says...
ctbronx Soto did help get them to the WS. That trade has worked out well for both teams. Durbin is far from a sure thing. That whole thing about him going to be the starting second baseman stuff was just trying to add value to him. Doubtful if he was ever considered. They finally did the right thing and traded someone when their value was high instead of hanging on to them and watching their value crater.
LordD99
Unlikely to be traded since he’ll still get 250+ ABs as a reserve. His versatility is a plus.
beboplar
This is sports writer chatter. Why would the Yankees want to trade Cabrera, who is a good value and plays almost every position on the field?
larkraxm
You would trade any player if you think that the package coming back makes you a better team. That is the debate though, isn’t it.
NYCityRiddler
Maybe because he’ll never be more than replacement level & this is the New York Yankees, how bout that, Hmmm. Ahahahaha!
dasit
cabrera should not be a starter for any team with playoff aspirations but he is the perfect utility player. no matter where he plays i’m confident in his defense but imo he will never hit enough to merit a starting position
canadianyankee
My 10yr old son wears 95 on his ball team because O.Cabrera threw him a ball when he subbed in RF in Toronto while Judge DH’d in his pursuit of 61…Judge tied it the next night and we were there to see that too…having said all that, my boy and I really like Oswaldo…he’s not a superstar but he always seems to do something to impact the game in a positive way…hope NYY hangs onto him and he has a few more small signature moments for the bombers (and my son)
Frankee
When I was 12 (long ago) I waived to NYY Joe Pepitone from my seat behind home plate and he waived back.. I remember it like it was yesterday, so I know how your son feels!
dasit
if i was a professional athlete i would make it my mission to delight at least one kid a day
dasit
love the guy as well. he has great energy and plays with confidence. he’s fun to watch and feels like the kind of player who could have a signature postseason moment. i want him to be a yankee for his entire career, just not as a starter 😉
TroyDT
The guy is MLB inexpensive, is not even arb eligible yet, and can play multiple positions. He is too valuable to just be a throw in.
