It’s been a relatively quiet offseason with regard to chatter on future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer. The three-time Cy Young winner was limited to nine starts of 3.95 ERA ball for the Rangers in 2024. He missed time early in the year while recovering from offseason back surgery and was also sidelined by a nerve issue in his hand, shoulder fatigue and a strained hamstring. It’s a length list of issues, particularly for a pitcher who turned 40 last summer.
Still, Scherzer has been preparing to pitch in 2025 and recently held a workout for scouts, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. SI.com’s Pat Ragazzo reported recently that the Blue Jays, Dodgers, Yankees, Mets, Phillies, Braves, Red Sox and Cubs were among those who were represented at the showcase. (That’s not necessarily an exhaustive list of teams.)
The Blue Jays have been the team most prominently linked to Scherzer thus far in the offseason, and Feinsand indeed suggests that Toronto has been the most serious suitor for Scherzer. Ragazzo adds that the Mets have “some level of interest” in bringing Scherzer back on a one-year deal. Time will tell whether the right-hander’s recent showcase for scouts drums up any new bidders, but Feinsand quotes one showcase attendee who suggested that Scherzer looked good — not up to his prior Cy Young standards but still “good enough to be an effective starter.”
At least in the 43 1/3 innings Scherzer managed amid all those maladies in 2024, that looked to be the case. In addition to his previously mentioned 3.95 ERA, the right-hander fanned 22.6% of opponents (roughly average) with a terrific 5.6% walk rate. His once-95-mph fastball sat at a career-low average of 92.5 mph in 2024, however, and he dealt with home run troubles for a second straight year (1.65 HR/9 in 2023, 1.45 in 2024). The righty’s swinging-strike rate (14.6%) remained excellent, but most of those whiffs came off the plate. Scherzer’s opponents made contact on 83.1% of swings within the strike zone — his highest level since 2011.
For the Jays, Scherzer wouldn’t need to reprise his status as an ace, however. Kevin Gausman, Chris Bassitt and Jose Berrios have the top three spots in the rotation. Bowden Francis and Yariel Rodriguez follow, but Francis has minor league options remaining and Rodriguez could move back into the bullpen. Toronto’s pitching depth, in general, is somewhat shaky with Alek Manoah on the mend from elbow surgery and top prospect Ricky Tiedemann missing most of the 2024 season due to injury. Rotation candidates beyond the top five include prospects Jake Bloss and Adam Macko as well as non-roster invitees Adam Kloffenstein and Eric Lauer.
The Mets have a more crowded staff, but president of baseball operations David Stearns is known for hoarding depth. Kodai Senga, Sean Manaea, Frankie Montas, David Peterson, Paul Blackburn and reliever-turned-starter Clay Holmes make up the starting staff right now. Swingmen Griffin Canning and Tylor Megill could get looks, too, as could top prospect Brandon Sproat. Fitting Scherzer into the puzzle is a bit of a challenge, particularly given the 110% luxury task the Mets are facing.
gigantes get in on this then sign greinke and well run out verlander scherzer greinke maybe see if sabathia wants to come out of retirement hes a bay area guy.
4 man rotation, 180 years among them
I’m hopeful for Bartolo Colon and Jamie Moyer.
Last I saw, bartolo was pitching for the Karachi monarchs.
The Cubs? Huh?
Hand Bartolo a bat and an oversized helmet and count on another 100k tickets sold minimum.
Why not the Cubs? He’d only command a one year contract and still throws as hard or harder than any of the Cubs other SP’s. His post-season pedigree could be welcome on a team that’s still looking for their first playoff win since 2017.
Syndergaard: am I a joke to you?
He’s too young.
Wish the Padres would sign him. Padres using duct tape and chewing gum to piece a roster together.
Can’t see that this is a team that is being constructed to win a WS let alone make the playoffs.
Sherzer should at least be in the conversation as an acquisition for the Padres.
The embarrassing Padres offseason continues though.
With Profar and Kim signing, fan favorites and substantial contdibutors to the roster are gone.
The team has lost nearly 12 WAR and is replacing it with minor league signings and non-roster invites.
“Hope” is all Padres fans are left with.
*sigh*
Hope you are able to enjoy the team when they surprise you.
All go through this, most survive.
Do not despair, the Frail Widow Seidler wishes to be paid $20 million a year or given team control.
The most likely outcome is that they will have to sell the team and some rich guy that owns a major league soccer team in San Diego will want to buy the Padres as well…
More shortstops!
Well you got that beautiful stadium and plaza. Went there for 4 games against The Mets! Wow! Weather wasn’t bad either! Do u even have clouds there!?
Nolan Ryan can get on board too
Sid Fernandez would make a good lefty, and Roger McDowell out of the pen, as long as he doesn’t spit on anyone.
Where is Cueto?
@longtime Cueto signed a minor league contract with the Angels last season and pitched poorly when he came up and was cut.
No they should sign Kershaw hahahahaha
Don’t forget Juan Marichal! He’s still around.
Rich hill?
just for the interviews!
Come be the Phillies closer
“ooooh, just a sec, let me check this off my ‘wish list’…”
Are you drunk? Ahahahahahaha!
“…do I sound drunk?”
The Phillies? Is there something they are hiding from everyone about the health of their starters? On paper the Phillies sixth starter is the best pitching prospect in baseball who they could open the season with if they wanted to.
Could never have enough pitching
Who is that ?
The Phillies , I would rather have Scherzer then Walker at this point
Andrew Painter
Painter , then if we could add Scherzer. More depth the better. Painter won’t be ready until July
LOL
What is the Dodgers got Max
$760,000 1 year with 500k deferred in the form of payments to a senior age life insurance plan
Sherzer already has deferred salary from the gnats
If dodgers add a veteran pitcher end of career and it’s not Clayton kershaw the fan reaction would be horrible.
Dodger fans don’t get to complain
I understand the Phillies doing their due diligence and they were connected to Scherzer and Verlander both earlier in the Hot Stove, but at this point if Scherzer wants to remain a starter he would not choose the Phils.
Now seeing him as a back of the pen option would certainly be intriguing, but for sure a longshot.
Missing piece to the World Series Atrophy.
Do it AA. He could be the arm that totally solidifies what could be an imposing staff or perhaps a saving grace if injuries/regression hits others.
I certainly like him as a fit for the Braves. They could use the upside and if he gets hurt or just falls off they have the depth to cover it.
Braves got burned by cole hammels. Aa should offer 1 year $10 Million max
In 2023 he completely flamed out in September and 2024 is all injury ridden. So thats all pretty worrying. If his injuries clear….The only way I’d take him is to place him on the 60 IL and let him take his time and ramp him up in June. Let him make a run in the back half of the season. He’d be in complete mid season form come playoffs.
Jays and Braves make the most sense. I was reading an article that said Scherzer might not choose the Jays because he doesn’t want to get dealt mid season but thats how he won a championship with the Rangers seems like that’s not a problem.
Cubs would make sense except he’s from St Louis.
On MLB Network today they were saying that Max is waiting to see if the Jays will sign Alonso because he wants to be on a contender & feels the Jays have a better chance with Pete in the lineup
Charlie Grimm was a legendary 1B and manager for the Cubs who was born in St. Louis. He even had his ashes spread over Wrigley Field after passing away in 1983.
Cooked.
Yep. They might as well throw the money in the furnace like Lem did on The Shield.
Bowden Francis was a top starter in MLB after his late July return from minors. The decision to start him unlocked something. Have to imagine he stays in the rotation unless he goes full Manoah
Verlander signed a one-year deal for 15 million so Scherzer is probably looking at something similar.
I’m actually surprised Arte hasn’t signed him already.
I was thinking the same thing. Actually posted below that he was the Angels type of signing. Old, mediocre, but a big name people would buy tickets to see.
Past his prime? Recovering from injury? Craig Breslow is calling…
John Smoltz finished his career with a year in Boston.
Is that really what we need in Fenway in 2025? That last, ignominious year of a storied career?
Technically half of a season. Smoltz made 8 starts with Red Sox in 2009 and was released in August, signed with the Cardinals and made his final 7 starts with St.Louis
Your memory is better than mine, but my point still stands.
The worst thing about the explosion of salaries in professional sports, is that guys at the end no longer want to quit or retire when it’s evident they should.
If someone was willing to pay you $15M or more for one year of doing something you love, would you really say no? I wouldn’t. Even if I didn’t care about the money, I could give away my salary and help more people in a year than most can in a lifetime.
Great!
Please list the over-the-hill players that have signed on for one or two years at high salaries at the end of their career, and sucked. Then list the charities the players sent those salaries to.
“Sent those salaries to”…You are correct sir. The greedy, high salary players try to portray themselves as civil rights icons, that are only working to level the playing field for the players that come after them.
Plenty of players in their early 30s have retired in the past year. The game tells the players when to retire, not the fans or media.
JV and Scherzer are 10th and 11th All Time in strikeouts. Neither were going to walk away and let the other push them out of that exclusive top 10 list. They re currently only 7 Ks apart, they either have a feasible shot at getting all the way up to possibly 6th on that list.
I’m just hoping they end up back to back wherever they end up on there. I’m expecting them to be 7th and 8th come end of season. It would take a healthy season and 20+ starts to hit 6th, just not seeing that.
This is such a weird take. The owners are making huge amounts of money. It sounds like you’re upset about not having a union which can advocate for you to earn your fair value.
“Such a weird take…The millionaire players are just as greedy as the billionaire owners. Being greedy is not mutually exclusive and is not limited to only one group of people.
Scherzer in Boston could be fun to watch
“Could be fun to watch”..You have “fun” watching players constantly rehab?
Do you actually think there’s other fans in Boston that will pay to watch Max Scherzer rehab or tirelessly explain his latest injury or shelling?
If so, I’ve got a couple of bridges and city parks I’m trying to unload at reasonable prices.
mlb fan – Wow what a reaction. Let’s take a quick inventory.
Is Scherzer better than ….
Giolito = Yes
Buehler – Could be if Buehler isn’t recovered
Sandoval – Yes
Whitlock – Yes
Houck – NO
Crochet – Could be if Crochet pitched too many innings in 2024
Crawford – About the same except Crawford throws more innings
Bello – Same as Crawford
Criswell – Yes
Murphy – Yes
Priester – Yes
Breslow built a shaky starting staff. Shaky is a perfect adjective for Scherzer. So it should just be about cost. Can Scherzer add knowledge for the young pitchers? Yes. Does he have a great work ethic? Yes. Does he have a winning attitude? Yes. Does he need some more wins and Ks to lock down a HOF spot? Probably not but every one helps assure him a spot. Most importantly, if he pitches does he out perform nearly EVERY pitcher on the pitching staff from an ERA and WHIP perspective? The answer is Yes. So for the right price he’s a plus not a minus since he’s probably as likely to stay healthy as is Buehler and his numbers will be better than Buehler’s when he is healthy. Buehler got $21Million and Verlander $15M so another signing for $15 Million to $21 Million fits the signing guidelines and provides comparable depth to Buehler. When he pitches, he won’t hurt the club, he’ll be one of the most likely to win a game especially if there are any issues with Crochet.
What’s funny here is to play up the injury concerns for guys already in the Sox rotation but totally gloss over the fact that because of injuries Scherzer has made a total of 17 starts the last 2 years. You seem to want to assume Scherzer will be healthy while doubting the health of others. Kind of a dangerous game there, no?
Luckily he went to the Blue Jays. Not sure I agree with your assumptions that he is better than most of the Red Sox current pitching options. I give many of them more value than that for the potential of having a good year. I will be curious to see how many he ends up being better than. This is not to say I don’t want them to add another pitcher, I just don’t want someone who doesn’t have much left in the tank.
King – If you were just a bit smarter you would have realized that was the whole point of my comment.
IF YOU ARE WILLING TO TAKE RISKS WITH THE GUYS YOU ARE TAKING RISKS WITH, WHY NOT DO THE SAME FOR A GUY WHO IS A HOFER rather than a 1st time Starter or guys like Giolito and Sandoval. The price is going to be less.
I assume nothing about Scherzer’s health, I’m just saying that each outing he pitches will be better than ones done by Giolito, Sandoval, Buehler and possibly Crochet depending on whether last year was real or simply an aberration that is not repeatable.
Uncle – Do the normal starters have a far greater chance of having a better year since they won’t miss time for injuries like Scherzer? Yes. Will the new guys do the same or will they be as injured as Scherzer? I have no idea. All I’m saying is that if gets 10 starts and Giolito gets 10 starts or for some reason a guy like Bello or Crawford gets 10 starts, Scherzer’s numbers will be better across the board. He’s more likely to win and have a better ERA and WHIP.
Other than Houck, the other 2024 returning SPs are not likely to out perform Scherzer but they are almost certain to be healthy for more starts. So why not milk everything you can out of Scherzer since he won’t be be anymore expensive than Giolito, Sandoval or Buehler.
The age and injuries resulting in very limited play last season would just be too big of a red flag, considering how many reclamation projects have been a bust for the Red Sox over the years. He certainly could be a positive clubhouse presence for the young pitchers. I will be curious to see how he does with the Blue Jays.
Did the showcase include Sherzer’s tour of interested teams Injured Reserve or Injured list facilities?
It will be the Red Sox that sign him, he fits John Henry’s criteria: He is either well past his prime or injured and therefore will come cheap on a short term contract.
Should go to frisco to battle with Justin again.
WITH THE SYSTEM SO BROKEN HE WILL GO TO THE DODGERS AT 1/100M AND IT ALL WIL BE DEFERRED
What is the upside to sign him? He’s at best a fourth or fifth starter and probably will end up on the DL. Last season tells that he’s best off retiring.
Surprised the Cardinals wasn’t there!!
“Cardinals wasnt there”…”Mad Max” Scherzer isn’t one of the original band members that the Cardinals try so hard to bring back or keep together every year.
Take your talents to the A’s & get drunk in that minor league stadium
He would be an Angels type of signing. Old, mediocre, but a big name so once a week people would buy tickets to see a future HOF pitcher on the mound.
He gets a showcase and yet Trevor Bauer had to sign in Japan again? Completely ridiculous.
Bauer will remain blacklisted as long as Manfred is in charge.
Teams have no interest in a guy that burned bridges in his wake. He has been available to sign for a long time. He made his own bed long ago, now he has to deal with it. Actions have consequences.
@jasonpen
MLB doesn’t want characters in the league anymore. It’s not good for the corporate image of MLB. They want cleanly scrubbed, responsible individuals who just use corporate messaging when asked questions. And when in doubt, just blame the interpreter for the bad behaviour…
“He gets a showcase..had to sign in Japan”..The obvious answer is that Scherzer has not been linked to beating up women while having sex with them.
I personally do believe that Bauer likely didn’t violate the law, but you cannot blame any corporation, individual or entity that doesn’t want to bring in a guy linked(rightly or wrongly)to rape & assault on women.
Most companies depend on the goodwill of the general public and MLB and other sports even more so.
“Ragazzo adds that the Mets have “some level of interest” in bringing Scherzer back on a one-year deal.”
————————————–
This is remarkably hard to believe. They’re interested in Scherzer, who’s unlikely to be an improvement on Tylor Megill et al at the back of the rotation and should cost at least what Verlander got, but they somehow couldn’t find the money to shore up their weak contender’s pen by driving the bidding for Kirby Yates above 1/13m?
Hey Lousy GM shapiro….Go get Vogelbach…..!!!
And, fire atkins too…On Your way out the door !
please please please don’t sign him cubs
I don’t get how Scherzer is still a subject of interest for the Jays when Flaherty is right there. Both have issues but I would have though Flaherty had better upside.
i would offer a base salary of 5 million with bonuses of 250 k per start plus another 250 k per win. 5 million bonus for 150 innings pitched.
time to hang up let a young guy make some money
