The Mariners announced that they have signed infielder Donovan Solano to a one-year contract. Robert Murray of FanSided reports that the ACES client will make $3.5MM this year, with $1MM in performance bonuses also available to him. Left-hander Austin Kitchen was designated for assignment to open a 40-man roster spot.
Solano, 37, has somewhat quietly been one of the better utility players in the league in recent years. Earlier in his career, he spent time with the Marlins and Yankees but didn’t hit enough at the major league level. He languished in the minors in 2017 and 2018 but got back to the big leagues in 2019 and has been hitting almost non-stop since then.
Over the past six years, Solano has played for the Giants, Reds, Twins and Padres. He got into 546 games over that stretch, stepping to the plate 1,838 times. He has managed to produce a batting line of .294/.353/.413 in that time, which translates to a wRC+ of 112, indicating he’s been 12% above league average overall.
For those years, he has a combined .360 batting average on balls in play. That would normally be a concern, since the league average is usually below .300, but he’s been maintaining high BABIPs for several years now. Of the six most recent seasons, his BABIP bottomed out at .321 in 2021. He was at .346 or higher in the other five seasons. That suggests the numbers are more a reflection of his swing than mere luck.
Solano won’t provide huge power, with last year’s eight home runs actually marking a career high. His walk rates aren’t especially strong either. However, his style of offense could be a good fit for Seattle, as that club has been wary of its strikeout problems for a while now.
Going back to the 2023 club, guys like Mike Ford, Jarred Kelenic, Teoscar Hernández, Eugenio Suárez and Tom Murphy were not brought back after posting strikeout rates north of 27%. But Seattle didn’t find the improvements it was looking for in that category last year, with guys like Luis Urías, Mitch Garver, Mitch Haniger, Jorge Polanco and Randy Arozarena striking out more than 28% of the time after being brought aboard. Solano has a career strikeout rate of 18.9% and has never had that number finish higher than 22.2% in any individual season.
The Mariners have clearly been looking for infield help this winter. Justin Turner hit free agency. Josh Rojas was non-tendered. The M’s turned down a club option on Polanco. That left them with J.P. Crawford at shortstop and question marks elsewhere.
Solano has played all four infield spots in his career but hasn’t played shortstop since 2021. He has more experience at second base than anywhere else but has spent more time at the corners in recent years.
That flexibility gives the Mariners some options in terms of how Solano is deployed. Reporting this winter has suggested the club may feel it has enough in-house options to cover second base, with Dylan Moore and Ryan Bliss potentially covering there until prospect Cole Young seizes the job. Luke Raley is an option to be the strong side of a platoon at first, since he’s a lefty swinger with notable splits. Guys like Austin Shenton, Tyler Locklear, Samad Taylor and Leo Rivas are also capable of playing various infield positions and on the 40-man roster.
The M’s are likely not done adding to that group, so Solano’s role could well be determined by what other moves are forthcoming. He could take some playing time at second or third, while his right-handed bat could also allow him to shield Raley from lefties at first base. Solano has fairly neutral platoon splits for his entire career, with a 101 wRC+ against lefties and 98 wRC+ otherwise. However, he’s been a bit more extreme in his recent resurgence. Over the past six years, he has slashed .310/.361/.444 against lefties for a 122 wRC+, compared to a .285/.349/.395 line and 107 wRC+ against righties.
It has been reported this offseason that the M’s were working with about $15-16MM of payroll space. Solano will use up a small portion of that while strengthening the infield group. That still leaves with them with some powder dry for another infield addition. It was previously reported that they were interested in bringing back Turner, though it’s possible the Solano signing makes that harder to put together.
It’s also possible that the M’s make a bold move to totally remake the picture, as there have been rumors they could trade Luis Castillo as a means of freeing up some spending capacity. Whether they go that route or simply find another modest infield addition remains to be seen. Pitchers and catchers will be reporting to spring training in about a month.
Kitchen, 28 next month, has limited big league experience. A prospect in the Rockies’ system, he was selected to the big league roster in June but was designated for assignment the next day without getting into a game. He went to the Marlins via waivers and made four appearances for that club, allowing 11 earned runs in seven innings. A second DFA in September put him back on waivers, which led the Mariners to put in a claim.
Though Kitchen has an ugly 14.14 earned run average, it’s a tiny sample of major league work. His minor league track record has generally been solid, with the lefty keeping the ball on the ground. In 2024, pitching for three organizations, he logged 52 1/3 innings in the minors. In that time, he had a 3.78 ERA, 15.1% strikeout rate, 6.8% walk rate and 55.1% ground ball rate.
The M’s will now have a week to figure out what’s next for Kitchen, whether that’s a trade or another trip to the waiver wire. The waiver process takes 48 hours, so any trades would have to come together in the next five days. Kitchen still has a couple of option years and minimal service time, so a club willing to give him a roster spot could keep him as cheap depth for the foreseeable future.
CHEAPSKATES!!!!!
Donnie Barrels is a solid signing
Donnie barrels is a blockbuster addition to us and will immediately bat lead off now
I’m not being sarcastic this is the best mariners news all off-season we actually spent money
What concerns me a little is that he could be an alternative to Turner. If that’s the case, they strengthen the bench, but DH becomes a bigger issue (need).
Nobody’s talking about Profar, but they should, because he could serve as the DH and fourth outfielder, and he profiles well at T-Mobile.
Then there’s third and second…
Profar had a great season, but he’s looking for ridiculous money and is primarily an OF now. He was released the year before after being terrible, so I’d find it hard to believe he’ll duplicate his career year. Let someone else overpay him.
That’s what I thought, he ends up part of the DH strategy more tghan a utility player. I hope that’s not the plan but given their supposed budget, I wouldn’t be shocked. If the Mariners really only had 15 million to work with, even someone like JT is probably pricey for them given their current roster needs.
You say Solano, I say Polanco, let’s call the whole thing off.
His defense took a dive, and there doesn’t appear to be a lot of interest in him around the league.
But that’s exactly why I see him as a fit. He can DH, shouldn’t cost a lot, wouldn’t require a long-term deal, and could still spell Randy and Victor when needed.
I see him as an affordable option. Imperfect, but that’s all Seattle can seemingly afford.
With Haniger and Garver on board, it’s assumed they have/had around 15m.
They should be willing to part with a prospect to move a bad contract if really necessary.
Having watched Donovan in SF and since, I can tell you the guy could roll out of bed and hit. He makes every team better.
You’re right, Profar *shouldn’t* cost a lot but I suspect he’ll receive a greater guarantee than I would personally be comfortable with. I highly doubt he can replicate his 2024 season.
Teams have their own projections. Surely, nobody expects him to replicate his 2024. But he’s still a fairly well disciplined hitter and he’s not in that upper-tier of outfielders.
I could see him getting 12m on a one-year deal or 20-22 on a two-year. I doubt he wants to risk sitting out too long and ending up in a situation like he did just two years ago.
You’re right, he’s well disciplined, doesn’t K much and BBs a ton. But other than last season, he’s never barreled the ball or hit it hard, and consequently has put out some of the lowest EV averages year after year.
Curious if he made a lasting swing change prior to ’24? If he did, then by all means, sign me up. If the M’s feel he’s going to produce similarly to his .282 xBA and .444 xSLG, I don’t care if he’s been one of the worst defensive outfielders his entire career and is slow as molasses; however, if it was mostly luck and he’s going to revert to his 2022-24 xBA/xSLG of about .245 and .345 then it’s a hard pass for me. We have enough poor hitters who shouldn’t see the field.
He ran a low BABIP as well (always has). I wouldn’t call his 2024 luck.
Nothing wrong with his EV, Barrels, etc. last year. I don’t what changed, but he has a ‘safe’ floor because of his plate discipline.
Minimizing risk would be wise for Seattle. I’m speculating over the price of course, but he’s a switch-hitter they could plug in behind Julio.
The ZiPS isn’t out on him yet, but Steamer has a respectable projection. He might be the most affordable of the remaining free agents that fit after Turner.
Bro, don’t be surprised if he has a big season for them. He was EXCELLENT with the Padres last year. Was really hoping he’d re-sign.
Another budget related blunder brought to you by the Seidler Bros.
Pads should have re-signed him, but the team will force minor call ups on Preller and Padres fans.
Solano is a get for the M’s.
Tow – you know Roki is reading all of your negative posts, right? If SD misses him it could all be your fault!
Now as to DS, I think Eguy provides more defense and higher upside at league minimum.
If money wasn’t a concern, I sure would have taken him back for a bench piece but you know, bench pieces are not likely to determine if Pads make WC or not. That money needs to go toward LF or a SP.
Roki Sasaki is next !
I hope so.
After him a lf, catcher a d bench depth are needed.
Why they did not bring back Solano and Peralta when the 3.5 million range is affordable beats me?
Amazing to me that that is outside of the Seidler Bros price range.
So Ornellas, Lockridge and Roasario will be marketed to fans incessantly.
We will be brow beat as to why we aren’t appreciative for calling up prospects from the 27th ranked far system.
Fans will then clamor for trades of Cease and Arreaez under the guise of the “necessity” of “rebuilding the farm”.
Don’t buy it. These trades are simply going to cost cutting moves.
Great time to be an SD Padres fan.
This dude lives a miserable life. He’s on here every article just throwing fits about the Padres and their owners. Take a breath bro, they haven’t even started spring training yet
Padres are going to be in a real tough spot in 2026 if they don’t trade Cease or King for longer term assets and are still operating under a strict budget.
Most of the top prospects the Pads still have are in the low minors.
The Mariners have a dangerous lineup. Cal, Julio, Randy, Robles, JP., Raley
Princess Yuki: Thanks for the laugh.
FWIW: Despite down years from Julio Rodriguez, J.P. Crawford and Randy Arozarena, last season Seatte posted a wRC+ of 104, including a league-leading wRC+ of 118 after August 15 when the Mariners led the American League in runs scored.
Here you are again to remind us all that the Mariners offense is actually really good, despite the results.
“Great pitching, good hitting. What else do you guys want? Wins?”
Their infield lineup can’t get any worse, so any addition is an improvement, but I wouldn’t include JP as part of a dangerous lineup.
3rd place in the AL west for sure!
Refuse to -l-o-s-e- Spend
LOOK OUT AL WEST!!!!
Can’t stand these comments anytime a player that isn’t a superstar gets signed by someone. Not everyone on a team is an all star
Erm, actually the entire Mariners rotation is HOF bound. Just ignore the fact that all of them pitch like #4/#5 starters on the road
We do!
Mariners don’t need more AVERAGE players got plenty!
Can’t stand it? Get off the internet, that’s a you problem. The Mariners only move in addressing an anemic offense is Donovan Solano. Considering I BLEED Mariners fandom I will mock them every time a mediocre move is made.
I imagine he wasn’t too expensive. A good bench add.
I’m not a Mariners fan but if I was I’d be pretty happy about this move. Their infield was mostly atrocious last season.
Unfortunately, he is probably ticketed to a starting role, rather than a bench role…
Why is that unfortunate? If he plays to his career averages he would be better than any position he touches was last year.
TheGr8One: How many 37 year old players play to their career average ?
The ones that have done it for 6 years straight. Those ones.
Yeah he’s going to probably be batting in the top of the order everyday
I can’t hate the signing as a Mariners fan. Fun side note his stance is the one I’ve used in MLB the Show for years. I couldn’t figure out where I knew the name from lol
Are we sure he’s a bench add?
Yeah, as constructed today he’s likely to split time at 1B with Raley and occasional start at 3B.
Or he is the starting third baseman…
I don’t think Austin shenton will get more time than solano
I see him as a 2b because I think 1 and 3 upgrades (or returns Turner) are still out there.
Hasn’t started more than 10 games at 2B since 2021. He’s a corner IF/DH now.
I don’t think that eliminates it going forward. We sign Turner and trade for Casas both things I think are still realistic and then where’s he playing? Haven’t seen Seattle on a 2b outside of Hoerner and I don’t think that’s happening. I could be totally off base but it feels like a clean fit.
He’s not playing 2B. If thats M’s plan then its a bad sign. I doubt he makes 1 start at 2B this year. I guess that 3 innings he played last year at 2B would make it a good fit for him.
Another cheap option is gone for Yankees instead of saying goodbye to DJL.
You make zero sense. If we drop DJ we’re still on the hook for his money so you’re cheap theory doesn’t work. I’d rather have DJ anyway.
There is no cheap option for saying goodbye to DJL. At some point, Hal is either going to live up to his last name or not.
This is a great signing; he’s a better JT that can play 3B
Umm …. He isn’t in JT’s league as an overall hitter.
As an overall hitter what’s that mean exactly? He hasn’t hit less than .280 since 2019. Are we talking power? Don’t need power at T-Mobile need singles. It’s a pitchers park I’ll take average over pop all day and twice on Sundays.
Not flashy, but a very solid player. Above average OPS+ in 5 out of last 6 years.
Tommy la Stella 2.0. Absolutely the biggest losers in baseball…
You’re not correct… this guy is a solid player… 21% strikeout rate is a big improvement and he gets on base. His average, on-base percentage, and OPS were all higher than his career average last year.
His average, on base percentage and OPS were all higher than this career average last year. You’re just giving more evidence for why this might come back to bite the Mariners. I hope I’m wrong and he plays like he did last year. His numbers are even better when you look at them against left-handed pitching. So did Garvers though.
It’s just another guy and it won’t get them any closer to a championship. So many teams in the american league have gotten better…
But which ones in the division got better? I’ll take Seattles rotation against all of the AL in the playoffs just got to get in. This signing is an upgrade. Nothing massive not a bregman or casas but wherever he takes the field he will be an upgrade over last year.
If he takes the “field”, he will be a massive downgrade. His bat is not exciting. He doesn’t totally clog the bases, but he’s not a burner. There is more than one reason they got him for less than 5M, a month before ST. He’s not a bat that gets them to the playoffs, and he’s certainly not a defender that does.
Not his fault, he’s 37. He’s had a better than average run.
But, LaStella, Wong, Polonco and now Solano… Not the moves that push them over the magic 54% mark.
Looks like the 37 year old beat out the 40 year old in Seattle
Still think Seattle will sign JT within the next week or so.
Solano is mostly a righty 1B. Unless one of them is gonna DH, I’d say this move precludes JT coming back.
The only way resigning JT makes sense is if Haniger is cut. Otherwise, the bench right now is some combination of Garver (RHH – C/DH/1B), Moore (RHH – UTIL), Haniger (RHH – DH), Solano (RHH – IF), Bliss (RHH – 2B), Locklear (RHH – 1B/DH), Shenton (LHH – 1B/3B/DH) and Canzone (OF/DH).
9 starters (including a DH) and 13 pitchers leaves only 4 bench batters. I think Solano starts at 2B and currently, Raley starts against all comers at 1B (his splits just aren’t that bad). If that’s the case, the lineup might well be:
RF Robles
CF Rodriguez
2B Solano
C Raleigh
1B Raley
LF Arozarena
DH Haniger
3B Shenton
SS Crawford
Bench: Garver (C), Moore (UTIL), Bliss or Taylor (IF), Canzone or Marlowe (OF).
But yeah, if we could either DFA Haniger or trade him, bad contract for bad contract, to the Padres for Cronenworth, that might change things a bit.
What a lineup! Hahahahahahahaha
except Cronenworth just had a strong season (17 HRs and 83 RBI), so that contract, despite being thru 2030, is no longer one of the worst in baseball. Nobody wants a useless player like Haniger!
Wouldn’t count on Solano for 2B at this stage of his career, played a grand total of three innings there last year and made 15 starts the previous two seasons.
That’s what should happen. Haniger should be cut, and Turner should be signed.
Garver should be the backup catcher, never the DH. It would be great to have a DH who could actually hit.
If I was a good owner that had money and bought the mariners here’s what I would do this off-season:
Sign Pete Alonso and Alex Bregman to opt out short term deals
Cut the mitchwich and either resign turner or sign jd Martinez for DH
Trade Luis Castillo for Jace jung (not one for one but those would be the headliners)
To replace Castillo’s roster spot either sign max scherzer or call up Logan Evans after a month
As a mariner fan I daydream what a fixed offense would look like but sadly it’s only a dream and dream never become reality in the cold dark Pacific Northwest
BBB, Thanks. I overestimated his defensive ability. It’s either 3B or 1B and his defensive metrics aren’t all that great at 3B. Maybe he is just half of a 1B platoon.
Raley vs RHP: .331/.473/.804
Solano vs LHP: .332/.397/.729
If that’s the case, he’s not the everyday starter anywhere. Redoing that monster lineup:
RF Robles
CF Rodriguez
LF Arozarena
C Raleigh
1B Raley
DH Haniger
3B Shenton
2B Bliss
SS Crawford
Bench: Moore (UTIL), Garver (C), Solano (1B/3B/DH), Taylor or Marlowe or Canzone.
If they DFA Haniger, Solano becomes the everyday DH, I guess. He might anyway because his splits aren’t all that different from either side of the plate.
2 more bats, please. Solano isn’t really enough.
I think this is our first and last move of the off-season
I hear you, my sad tormented friend. It’s wholly possible, given the lack of intent to create a world series championship squad, at least on the hitting side. The fans are apoplectic, and rightfully so, but the Mariners are notorious for having blinders on.
Donnie Barrels!
Welcome to the offseason, Seattle!
Yeah, the 2025 off-season that starts in October.
We waited all winter for… THIS?!?
La Stella, Wong, Polonco, Solano…
Paper bags will be standard issue for fans this year. Ownership wasting another year of pitching.
#sadsacks
#cmonman
#goodshow
#profitsoverpennants
If there isn’t a follow-up move to push him to a part-time option, it’s a terrible decision. If there is, it’s not bad at all for $3.5M. That context will really matter.
Solano is a superior hitter to those all other ones; it helps to do some analysis.
Definitely the superior hitter to La Stella and Wong; definitely not the superior hitter to Polanco, who had a nice career until he fell flat on his face here. I do agree that HighCheese shouldn’t put the first two in the same category as the latter two, however.
They are the same caliber move. Just enough to fill a spot, but not enough to move the needle. And, probably a year or two too late to be anything super productive.
Solano has had a better career, but none of those dudes ever struck fear in a pitcher. Raised the pulse, at times. But, not what’s needed at this point.
He’s not a superior hitter to Jorge Polanco, until last year.
Or just some basic reading!
Other teams could always use another fan.
Keep your tennage girl hashtags in the paper bag with your head. Thanks
Well, if you’re going to rip him, at least spell teenage correctly!
Oops!
I wanted him back on the padres but 3.5-4.5m was a more than I thought he would get. Of course that’s not much anyways.
The minimum salary now is nearly $800K. How much less did you think Solano would get, considering he hits for average and gets on base at an above average clip and can play several positions?
Bubba Thompson changes sports.
Go Jags!
al.com/sports/2025/01/bubba-thompson-set-to-join-s…
I like this signing for the Mariners. Solano has been solid the past several seasons
Here comes a string of unexpected moves that keep one upping each other until every one crying realizes they now have chillz
Under rated player IMO. League average bat, versatile to a degree.
$3.5 million is a good deal for him.
Donnie Barrells is a baller! Under the radar upgrade for the M’s. Friars would have LOVED to bring him back but that salary is very generous.
Yankees need to get rid of the dead weight on the roster, and DJL is at the top of the list. Eat the 2 years and use that roster spot on someone more productive. The time is now for Judge and Cole.
This is a fine move if he’s expected to receive the same number of PA as he has the last five seasons. That means there still has to be a follow-up move that pushes him to a part-time role. If there isn’t, relying on Solano to fix our offensive woes is a huge risk that is likely to fail.
That was my thought as well. He’s a nice bench guy but I have a feeling he’s going to be starting on opening day. And if so yuck.
Its almost certainly the first of a few INF acquisitions. I’d be shocked if the M’s don’t sign at least 1 more INFer. After looking at Solano’s .310/.361/.444 and 122 wRC+ vs LHP over the last 6 years – it looks like Nuke Raley has his 1B platoon partner. I’d put money on J Turner taking his redbeard elsewhere.
Solid right-handed bat for them, nice signing.
“Performance bonuses” is interesting, since “Major League Baseball’s Basic Agreement prohibits incentives from being awarded based on statistical achievement”: mlb.com/glossary/transactions/incentive-clause
Correct, but they are allowed to include bonuses reaching certain numbers of at-bats, innings pitched, games started, etc, as well as awards voting placement.
Playing time for sure, just haven’t though of that as “performance” per se. Don’t think we have to worry about him winning any awards.
Yeah, “performance incentive” is just the common term for it. Suppose you could view it as quantity of performance, instead of quality.
Incentives based on reaching a certain amount of plate appearances (or innings pitched for pitchers) as well as various award placement incentives are incredibly common
This is a good move, and it makes a lot of sense. I’m happy with it. Now go get Brendan Rodgers!
Been screaming it all off-season.
This move makes Rodger’s a meaningless signing. Would’ve been an either/or situation and they went with a more solid player. And Seattle already has Brendan Rodgers for cheaper and with more potential in Bliss.
We love Donnie Barrels in SD.
Giants fans as well
Catchy nickname, but a bit perplexing for a guy who’s only had an above-average barrel rate once in his career 😉
OHHH, this is exciting. A well traveled, overweight, second baseman who can be plugged into 1B/3B. Don’t expect much defensively. hmmm, how do you say Chone Figgins, Dee Gordon, Shed Long …………………….. I know I’m a little out of bounds, but pardon me if my fan meter is pegged.
And don’t forget, he’s good for a solid 5-8 homeruns if he gets 450 at bats.
Except he probably wont play an inning at 2B
He actually grades out as an above average defender so he’ll be fine there.
Yeah, back in 2014. He’s a bit shaky these days. It could be a good signing if he were being used as a utility player but I have my doubts.
If you ask me ….Donnie Barrels will be Nuke Raley’s platoon partner at 1B. I also think that after watching Polanco’s abysmal defense at the Keyhole position last yr the M’s will be looking for a better Defensive Profile at 2B. Maybe its a combo of DMo and Bliss until Cole Young comes up? I could be completely wrong, maybe they put Solano at 2B? I suspect not though ….
Solano can platoon with Raley until Locklear is ready, work with DMo/Bliss until Williamson, Young or Arroyo are ready. He adds a lot of flexibility and if the mariners go out and add a big name or a prospect comes up he can be a utility guy or get cut without hurting the team. Really just filling in wherever with DMo until the young guys emerge.
Screw Dylan Moore we will never win a playoff game with his type on the roster!
Dylan Moore had an OPS .146 higher than Julio’s vs teams over .500. Unless Julio starts playing at least average ball against good teams rather than just feasting on bad pitching, you need guys like Dylan Moore.
No you really really don’t… You guys keep living in your fantasy world with this team…
Already did win a playoff game with him on the roster. Every good team needs a dmo. Your comments never cease to amaze me with how dumb they are
Your dmo is trash just like your screen name…Trailer trash
My ideas are what they need to actually win something not be a participation trophy idiot mentality like you have…
overweight?
Not a big fish, but I am pleased to have Donny Barrels aboard
They needed a utility infielder.
The question is if they’ll ask role players to play a larger role.
There’s nothing wrong with this, it just can’t be it.
Would you rather have kept Josh Rojas? Solano and Rojas will make the same salary? Is this an upgrade or a well we screwed that up signing?
No, Rojas wasn’t good for the last 4 and a half months and this at the very least gives them a platoon partner for Raley as well as insurance at third and second.
Would have loved to have seen him come back to the Padres. Good luck to you Donovan.
I want to be positive and believe that this is not it at all. Love that he can play 1b, 2b and 3b. Even if they sign Justin Turner I still think there is another move by trade to get an impact bat at 2b or 3b and perhaps a back end reliever. Three more players coming, I believe.
He can’t play 2B anymore. That’s a complete no-go.
You guys might ridicule this but Solano hits everywhere he goes. This is a good move by the M’s. I don’t know why Solano and Jose Iglesias are hard pressed to find a team every year.
In Solano’s case because no power and worse defense. His middle infield days are gone now, and he’s barely hanging onto 3B depending on how bad a glove you can tolerate. Mostly 1B/DH. But yes, he will hit 300 or close to it.
I’m not sure about his defense but you’re probably right. However, I watched him with the Reds and he was a difference maker on the other side of the diamond.
He hasn’t hit below .280 since he’s come back to the States. What are you talking about?
Baseball Reference is just a click away.
Did someone finally knock the piggybank off of Stanton’s desk?
Maybe the Rockies and Mariners should constantly work together. Won needs hitting the other has it. One needs pitching the other has it…
Finally, an actual free agent signing!
Come On In My Kitchen.
Allman Bros.
I think the org has made it clear they think their near-ish future stars are already in the system, and they’re not looking for long or expensive deals. This is a stopgap until prospects are ready, and I expect other deals will be similar. No guarantees for sure, but it’s the cost-effective way to do it.
I think it’s more likely that they’re hoping to rely on bats they’re attempting to develop because they’ll never have the budget to buy real help.
So far, they’ve hit on just two.
I am numb to all Mariners moves. Nothing that seems smart works for them, nothing that seems stupid is ever less stupid than it might have been.
Sad to see him go. He had some clutch hits. I think they are hoping Ornelas breaks out like Merrill.
Splash
Good luck DB! He raked in SF. Defense meh.
Perfect signing for a team who has an entire infield about ready to make their debuts over the next year or so. A one year guy who could have trade value at the deadline, but is expendable if/when replaced by call ups. When it’s Bregman, Adames and then no one else available in the infield (besides 1B), this + internal promotions is the way to go.
The cost savings of signing a 1 WAR guy over a 2-3 WAR guy makes a lot less sense when you keep missing the playoffs by 1 game.
That’s mean, but I love it because I hate the Mariners. They know what they’re doing. For some reason the local fans keep paying to see meager effort. Why pay good players when you can sell 30k tickets to watch has-beens and won’t-be’s trudge through the worst years of their careers?
Now this is some thick trash, and I know a pile when I see one. Jerry “Jelly Rag” Dipoto is digging through the dumpster again, and this time he’s coming up smelling like tuna cans and soaked socks.
Holy crap, the Mariners actually did something. Literally getting a guy to fill a role temporarily while we wait for our minor league guys to develop. This points to us wanting to go with them eventually and not trade them away, and I love it! An actual good move by Dipoto. Because if he trades any one of those young prospects now, he’ll go down as one of the worst baseball execs of all time, as will Hollander. This is literally the only thing that can and will redeem both Dipoto and Hollander.
My kitchen is very outdated. Acquiring a newer one off waivers is cheaper than renovating the one i have.
In the 2020s, how is it possible that the Mariners’ FO believes hitter strikeouts matter?
The more productive hitters tend to K more. How can they not know this—assuming the article is accurate?
It’s a good question. The Dipoto-FO came in as all about modern metrics, yada-yada.
There are some areas where that seems to hold up, but others where…. well… “we want fewer K’s and we’re ignoring how the home park factor is the most K-friendly in the league”.
I mean… the basics — now almost 50-years in — of sabermetrics is that Ks are important for pitchers, but not all that important for hitters.
Austin Kitchen has control issues, especially with finding the strikezone. He has a tendency to throw inside too much. His intimidation tactics are known throughout the minor leagues. He is also a part-time chef. I’ve seen him feel right at home on Top Chef and other well-known cooking shows.
Solano signing was a really smart move. Look at his numbers in San Diego last season. Great under-the-radar acquisition. I wish the Angels would of acquired him. Seattle should try to sign the real OG OMG MVP, Jose Iglesias. Many hitters 6 don’t want to go to Seattle because it is murderous in offensive counting status and batting average. RamoN LAUREANO can be signed for an outfield slot. With the money you save on the Ramon signing you should sign both Santander and Pete Alomso. I would annoint you AL champs this season.
Peter Seidler surely wouldn’t have stopped signing players. A real slap by current management at loyal Padre fans who want a winne, not more bobbleheads.
As a Cub fan, I’m really annoyed. Solano would have been a perfect 5th infielder and insurance against Matt Shaw struggling against tough RHP as a rookie. And the Cubs could have afforded even $5M to sign him.
Really wish the crew would’ve offered the three mil with a player option for a second at say four-five mil, they need help hitting lefties and infield depth/offense, would’ve been a great fit
All offseason, the mill has been that the Mariners should get a Turner-/ Santana-/ similar-type of 1B — a guy who can provide some overall value in a PT, mostly-1B or DH role.
And they just got a guy who has that kind of bat (upper end of that class at 115-120-ish wRC+ the last 2 years) but has greater versatility… and yet is a name that hasn’t been milled about all offseason.
That gets me to 2 big points:
1. In the context of this *NOT* being the biggest offensive addition (before replying, see below…), this is one heck of an addition. He’s just as old as Turner, Santana and Goldschmidt, but he hits better and has better position flexibility. That’s… pretty doggone good.
2. This had better not be the big offensive addition. This allows more play for a late-offseason big add, but………… I’ll take the under odds of that happening at this point.
