The Mariners announced that they have acquired infielder/outfielder Miles Mastrobuoni from the Cubs. The latter club had designated him for assignment last week and now receives cash considerations for his departure. Seattle designated catcher Nick Raposo for assignment to open a roster spot.
Mastrobuoni, 29, has been a part-time big leaguer over the past few years. Over the past three seasons, he has appeared in 119 games and taken 272 plate appearances, mostly with the Cubs but also with the Rays. He has a tepid .219/.279/.263 batting line in that time but has stolen 16 bases in 17 tries while providing defensive versatility. He has spent time at the three infield positions to the left of first base as well as the outfield corners.
As is often the case with a depth player like this, the minor league performance has been better. Over the past three years, he’s had 982 Triple-A plate appearances with 22 home runs, an 18.1% strikeout rate, 12.8% walk rate, .278/.371/.434 slash line and 114 wRC+.
The Mariners have been looking for infield upgrades this winter. They lost Justin Turner to free agency, turned down an option on Jorge Polanco and non-tendered Josh Rojas. That left them with J.P. Crawford at shortstop and no clear answers for the other positions. They have various possible solutions on the roster, including Luke Raley, Dylan Moore, Ryan Bliss, Austin Shenton and others, though strengthening the group has clearly been a goal this winter. The club signed Donovan Solano this week but shouldn’t be done.
Mastrobuoni won’t fix everything but he’s a solid addition to that cluster of potential contributors. He can bounce around to multiple positions and steal a few bases at least. The offense in the majors hasn’t been good yet but the minor league numbers have been better, perhaps suggesting there’s potential for more there. He also has an option remaining, meaning he doesn’t need to be given an active roster spot and can be shuttled between the minors and majors with relative ease.
Raposo, 27 in June, was just claimed off waivers from the Blue Jays last month. He hasn’t yet made his major league debut. He first got a 40-man roster spot from the Cardinals last summer, when both Iván Herrera and Willson Contreras were injured, but never got into a game. He went from the red birds to the blue birds in August when the Jays claimed him off waivers, though Toronto lost him to Seattle a few months later.
In his four years of minor league experience, he has a .241/.321/.387 line and 85 wRC+ in 808 plate appearances. Baseball Prospectus has given him solid marks for his blocking and throwing in the minors. He still has a couple of options and just a handful of days of service time.
The M’s will now have a week to figure out what’s next for Raposo. That could be a trade or Raposo could be put on waivers again. The waiver process takes 48 hours so any trade talks would need to happen in the next five days.
The nightmare is over!
Kay – It’s one paesano being replaced by another paesano.
Mamma mia!!
I’m sorry, Seattle fans. At least you got Donnie.
Don’t you mean The DREAM is over?
I always order the unlimited miles of Mastrobuoni dish at Olive Garden.
Do you fill up on unlimited soup/salad and breadsticks and then take your entree home? That’s what I do.
Well this seems to confirm that Mastrobouni and Shenton will go into Spring Training competing for the LHH infielder role.
Mariners IF – Raley, JP, Solano, Moore, Bliss and Shenton or Mastrobouni
That’s so gross. Raley, JP, and 69 UTIL IFs.
You need to change your name to ‘can we get anyone who can hit’ or ‘no more utility INF please.”
This offseason is absolutely disgusting for us M’s fans. Giant slap in the face. There’s no other way to say it.
You could say, it’s like to fall in the mud and get kicked… in the head… with an iron boot. Just something to consider Ahahahaha!
Lol. I stand corrected, there were other ways to say it!
I would if DH wasn’t looking like Garver/Haniger… if the team had a real DH, it wouldn’t be so bad to see 2B and 3B as glove first players.
I’m glad Jerry is making moves now but miles masturb- not going to say it- is hot garbage
It’s MasterBozo to keep it clean
Don’t forget Leo Rivas
The Mariners seem hell bent on collecting Durham Bulls alumni.
Time to invite Kyle Seager to spring training. He is the same age as Solano.
I would take seager over who knows who at 3rd
The way they treated him on the way out, is part of why FAs don’t want to come to Seattle. Until ownership changes hands, or does some SERIOUS soul searching, FA players don’t want to be around this org.
It wasn’t just on the way out. Kyle stated that Dipoto hadn’t spoken to him in over 3 years! Pathetic. if they would have treated Kyle right, he would have been telling Corey ” You must come to Seattle and play with me”.
Kyle Wright plays for the Royals.
Solano could hit better than Miles blindfolded
I hear that Miles is a Frequent Flyer on the base paths…
Actually, he rarely gets to the base paths
I’m glad the Cubs moved him. Can’t hit a lick. But he is solid around the infield. Good luck to him!
His skill set would be perfect for the dead ball era.
He’s worth a bag of balls, good luck to him with the Mariners. Jed can’t latch onto him anymore, and that’s a win.
Does Jed still have Nick Madrigal to latch on to? He and Miles are two guys who shouldn’t be anywhere near a major league roster.
Madrigal was non-tendered I believe, I don’t see him on the arbitration page.
Damn was hoping it was Miles Mikolas…
Hey user ‘Card AG’ is it cool if I mock this one too?
Mariners are 7 years into this whatever they call it rebuild retool reassess and they are doing the same thing they have done the whole time just bargain basement shopping. That’s why they’ve been a .500 team and 1 playoff win since Dipoto started…I’m done. Go Royals!!!
well they were one of the worst teams in baseball with the worst farm system and a high payroll when Jerry took over. Now they are right around a 90 win team fighting for playoffs and one of the best farm systems.
Success equals playoffs and World Series. Not barely missing the playoffs every year and there’s no guarantee these prospects are gonna end up being what they think they are. This team has plenty of money to spend
but they have the demographic they want which is families going to the games no matter what their record is…$$$$$$
Unfortunately Dipoto’s hands are financially tied. STANTON needs to sell the team to an ownership group that gives a damn about winning, the players, and the fans!
Meanwhile the season ticket reps won’t leave me alone about why I haven’t paid yet this year
I’m on the fence about it for the first time. I love going and it’s basically my entire social life in the summer. It’s my home away from home. But I do not appreciate being placated to.
“Look Mariner fans! It’s DAN WILSON! And he’s got EDGAR WITH HIM!!”
Give me a break. You want my money? Win more games. Fulfill the promise of an impressive young core, and one of if not the best pitching staffs in baseball.
Me too. This might be the year I give up my 20 game plan.
Don’t do it. Hold strong and resist. They don’t deserve our money.
Fulfillment of promises made, is not part of Stanton’s character trait list.
He just gets more unlikeable every season. The whole group needs to go.
Even Jr can’t get them to play for championships. 🙁
STH since 2010 and for the past 5 years I’ve had the same thought….. am I giving the Mariners my money again this year? It used to be enjoyable…… now it’s frustrating! Every year my tickets cost a ridiculous percentage more. Every year basic concessions go up. Every year items at the team store increase. Every year the swag package that can be purchased (for additional funds) gets more expensive and no longer includes all of the give-aways…… in fact it’s less and less every year. And what ever happened to Fan Fest???
This is why they let Rojas go?
Come on Mariners. I want to root for you but this cheapskate nonsense is really lame.
umm no. Rojas was on the MLB roster and making several million. This is a depth move that doesnt need to be on the 26 man. If Rojas was on the roster he’d be penciled in as starting 3B and everyone would be complaining since he was one of the worst hitters after May in MLB.
This guy is making the big league club dude.
Im sure he plays on the big league club next year but I’m sure they have no intention of him being up with the club even half the season. Its depth and he is better depth than the C they DFA’d for him
Yeah you keep telling yourself that.
dude, they basically claimed a minor leaguer off waivers and you’re penciling him in a everyday player. You probably have Solano as the everyday 2B too since he played there a few years ago.
Who do you think is starting at 2b and 3b for the Mariners on opening day?
Not Mastrobuoni. There are several players ahead of him on roster. As constructed right now, Solano is likely spitting time at 1B with Raley with maybe an occasional start at 3B. Starter at 2B and 3B might not be on roster right now but I doubt its a waiver claim. DMo, Bliss, Rivas, and probably even Shenton ahead of Mastrobuoni on 40 man and M’s probably are hoping Young will be ready at some point in the season to take over 2B.
Young had a 759 OPS in AA last year.
Not one of those is an option for a wanna be playoff team…
I don’t think there opening day 3B is on the current roster and was never expected to come through FA.
So they are going to trade for a 3b?
Who will that be?
Gotta be careful with those AA numbers for guys in Arkansas. The Texas League is hitter friendly overall but Dickey-Stephen’s is a pitchers dream. .759 there isn’t bad. It’s better than what Cal Raleigh did there.
Ben Williamson and Cole Young are in the plans this year, just a matter of when.
.759 OPS in one of the hardest hitters park in MiLB playing as a 21 yr old. Where the average age of players in the Texas League is 23-25y old.
His Final 30g of the season slash line was an impressive .307/.415/.386 A .415 OBP!! Yes Plz! A lefty with a 60 grade Hit Tool will fit well in T-Mobile Park. Btw If you look at the transformation of his body shape from last year to this year you will see he appeared to have added 10-15 lbs of muscle. He looked much stronger at the end of 2024.
Personally speaking in this modern era of dominant Pitching (in a Pitchers Park) I would love a 2B with good bat to ball contact skills, a high OBP, with a balance of speed and good glove work. I’m tired of watching FA 2B that come to SEA then begin to chase pull side power because of the Park. That makes them easy outs for Pitchers. Give me a 60 grade Hitter at 2B any day!!
I mean… in all fairness… we asked the ownership to improve the team and they made a move to make us miles better than we were before.
Miles better? Compared to what? They are no better than they were last year yet alot of teams in the AL are getting better..
I think… my friend… this joke may have sailed juuuuuuust a bit over your head.
Apparently so lol
Cheap Mariners going nowhere
Why should they spend more than league minimum to employ someone to play for AAA for them?
Am I the only one that was happier with our roster BEFORE this acquisition?
These owners have to be laughing at us fans in their department head meetings…
Subtraction by addition
I’ll be honest, this is pretty pathetic for a team that’s so close and needs production on their infield so badly.
why is it pathetic to employ people to play for your AAA team? does your team not do that?
I bet he makes the opening day team. Probably not starting with a stud like Solano in the way but I bet he makes the team.
They got him because he still has options.
One of their better prospects was their AA 3B last year, and will be their AAA 3B this year (Ben Williamson). And Cole Young will be the AAA 2B. Mastrobuoni has no place to play except in the majors or as a utility guy in AAA.
He’s more of a AA talent.
Single A. AA guys are about ready to produce at mlb
no he’s exactly AAA talent which is extended MLB roster for veterans on minor league deals or plug and play guys. AA usually has all the talent. You dont put 29 yo veterans down to AA, they play in AAA.
At this point my guess is that the M’s front office believes that Young is closer to MLB ready and doesn’t want to spend money to potentially block him. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if they try for (as they should) to re-sign Turner to platoon first with Raley. The assortment of others can fight for playing time between third and Second but at least we would have something of a proven bat to help support the obvious weakness those others clearly present.
Maybe…..
I expect Cole Young to play 2B for them by May
Cole Young is 21 and was good-not-great in AA last year. He ain’t touching the big leagues until 2026. Also Ryan Bliss was totally fine last year. League average or even a bit above in his brief appearance in the bigs, after crushing AAA.
Cole Young played in the most difficult hitting environment in the entire minor leagues. He’ll be our 2B in Seattle by the trade deadline.
Not only did he play in an extreme Pitchers Park he did so at the age of 21. The avg age of players in the Texas League is 23-25 yrs old. Also if you look at his last 30g slash line he finished with a .307/.415/.386 an .801 OPS and .415 OBP as a 21 yr old in THAT Park? I think “good not great” is the wrong phrase to describe the 21 yr olds last 30g.
it’s depth, but I don’t see what teams see in this guy
Positional versatility and speed. He’s not a bad choice to be the first call up for the bench when somebody goes on the IL, and spend the rest of the year in Tacoma. But if he gets more than 50 PA for the Mariners there is a different big problem.
Luckily we don’t have Dave Sims to butcher this guys last name into some form of masturbation
“Some form of masturbation”
That’s the team slogan for 2025
Did I miss something did this ownership group do us a minor favor and can Simms? Guy drives me nuts.
Honestly the best part of the Mariner’s offseason… and it wasn’t even their choice.
Hey if you ever feel the sick urge to Raposo just Mastrobuoni instead and keep it to yourself so noone gets hurt.
Hahahah. A good hard laugh to start my day off with.
Be careful …heard you can go blind.
This article, near the end, suggests there is possibly more there to come from Mastrobuoni.
No, there is not, at least not offensively. But very capable with the glove, so there’s that.
I get that Seattle’s starting staff is awesome and everything, but this lineup is just not getting any better. Solano and Mastrobuoni..?!? As the early January pickups?!?
We Boston fans who complain about our own FO should probably just shut up.
At least Solano can hit a little, unlike Mastrobuoni.
Swan
Donovan Solano is a solid hitter.
MasterBozo is a horrible hitter.
He’s a solid hitter with little to no power and is going to cost you in the field, unless he primarily DH’s or plays 1B. I think that was a mistake as well. Better RHH first basemen out there.
I thought it said that they were looking for infield upgrades. This is no upgrade, but a guy who should be in the minors.
Forget the wave, time to start the “stroke”
Not the highly speculated infield trade consummated between the Mariners and Cubs which had names like Nico Hoerner and Luis Castillo thrown around earlier this offseason.
True
Love me some Stromboli. Oh wait, wrong thread…
Ah yes, the useful utility player that every fan loves to see their team sign or acquire. The player that can’t hit but has some success in AAA but he plays multiple positions, usually average at best and can run a little. Sometimes they like to include the, he has a little pop too, but not in this case. Why didn’t they just bring back Donovan Walton for the 13th time or do the Giants still have him for now? Doesn’t matter, they’re all the same. Good for those guys making a living playing ball but these are the moves I’ll take the side of the disgruntled fan on.
Any Mariners fans scouting some of the potential picks for 3rd overall in the upcoming draft?
I was watching some tape on Seth Hernandez last night. He is really impressive. I think him, Holliday and Laviolette are the clear top 3 guys in the draft as of today. Hernandez looks like a sure thing to me. I know he’s a high school righty but unless he has a major injury he’s going to be a stud.
He’s not even in the top three high school pitchers by most accounts, and not top 6 pitchers in general.
He’s number 5 overall on MLB.coms prospect list and the highest ranked high school pitcher. And if you watch him it’s clear why. He’s going to be a stud unless he has a major injury. Absolute stud hes really good right now and his body has a frame to fill out and get even better.
I like the HS 3rd baseman from Mt Vernon…
I am going to get the streaming service for HS sports to watch him play. When he comes to Bellingham will try to see him a couple times live.
It’s almost overwhelming looking at the guys available. Knowing right now literally anyone is a possibility for us. Hernandez is mindblowing to watch. The 35th pick combined with the 3rd also makes getting a guy underslot with the first pick (like a 7th overall player) then going way overslot for another top 15 talent a possibility too if there isn’t a massive separation between the best talent. 1 more month until college ball!!!
“cluster of potential contributors.” I’ll say it’s a cluster all right!
Leave the gun. Grab the Mastrobuoni.
Every year we think it can’t get worse, then the Mariner’s say “Hold my beer” and prove it can.
Pathetic.
Miles Masturbation strikes again!
Too easy to make jokes at Miles’ expense. The Orioles need a 3rd string backup catcher with options as an emergency shuttle passenger behind Rutchman and Sanchez. Raposo might be a good fit as a solid glove esp if he can approximate his triple all walk rate of 12-13%. I realize that’s a tall order for a below average bat but it is only a 3rd string backstop.
damn, todays news has been slow as hell.
Today? That’s every day if you’re an M’s fan……
The thing about retirement and living abroad. All the days are the same. Monday, Friday, Sunday…. They’re all the same. Some days, it feels like I’m watching things from afar and becoming obsolete. Other times, I’m recognizing so many ignoring wisdom and confidently resorting to gimmicks to bypass simple common sense.
I don’t mean to poke fun at these two players names but used together, that’s what first came to mind. Confusing world sometimes.
where are you living in retirement, Garry?
At this time, I’m riding motorcycle around Africa. Currently, I’m based in Nyali, Kenya. My base is constantly changing.
Jerry: “John, you know what they say about the definition of insanity…”
John: “Insane like a fox!”
You know who else hit quite well for his position in the minors, but hasn’t yet in the majors? Nick Raposo.
So Dipoto
I can’t wait to see Mastrobuoni on the back of a uniform. Names like that are probably why they reduced the size of names on uniforms.
I can’t wait for Stanton’s interview with Divish where he says this is the best club ever, and it’s taking the WS in 5.
John: “Six billion, seven hundred and eighty seven million, four hundred and ninety two thousand, five hundred and fifty three dollars…six billion, seven hundred and eighty seven million, four hundred and ninety two thousand, five hundred and fifty four dollars…
Jerry: “John, John!, we were able to get Mastrobuoni!”
John: ” Six billion, seven hundred and… Damn it, Jerry! You made me lose count, now I have to start all over!”
Has anyone checked on UncleMike? He may have fell out of his chair after seeing the headline.
Cub Fans getting a late Christmas Gift…
Mastroboni does a few things well, just not enough things to be a consistent big leaguer.
Mariners don’t need to add any players.
Everybody forgets they already added the Man to win the pennant: Dan Wilson. He’s a mighty good man, yes he is.
Mastrobuoni will have a great time in Tacoma. But we still need 2 hitters. Otherwise, the starting infield might devolve into Shenton, Crawford, Bliss, and Raley/Solano. Not a pennant winner.
I’m sure this pickup is just a depth move, but given the management group, can never be sure. They need alot of help. At least a couple positions are likely to be lackluster this year. They could surprise with a prospect for mlb trade but feel the options are limited on that front too.
Dipoto says, “The plan is to start Mastrobuoni at second, batting ninth. He’ll play three innings In the field, and then Solano will pinch hit in the bottom of the third. Bliss, will replace Solano in the field, and when his turn to bat comes in the bottom of the sixth, Justin Turner will pinch hit. Leo Rivas will play the field in the seventh, eighth, and ninth, and when he comes up in the bottom of the ninth, we’ll just forfeit that out so we can beat the traffic.” 54% of the time, it works 100% of the time!
To put it in perspective, the Mariners have not won their division in almost a quarter century (crazy!) and are the only team to never to have made a World Series appearance. Yet people come on here and applaud a 37 yo old utility infielder and they’re basically saying well, that’s a good step. It’s a horrible mindset that this team has and if people want to accept it go for it. But i’m done with it it makes me sick to my stomach and I think more and more fans are starting to feel the same way…
Couldn’t agree more. The owners and FO need to actually spend some money and get some hitting for once. We’re absolutely wasting this amazing young starting rotation
A .219 BA-but according to the fans of today, especially Cub fans, that’s just fine because tepid is more gooder.
Finally, I’m so glad we got mastrobuoni off the team
Phew* glad they addressed all the holes in the lineup. Old man Donavan Solano and this no name utility man will definitely do the trick
Awesome! A .219 career hitter. He’ll fit right in
Truly a roster addition for the ages
