January 13: The Giants made the deal official over the weekend and introduced Verlander to the media today. Per Jon Heyman of The New York Post, in addition to the $15MM salary, Verlander’s deal also contains awards bonuses and a full no-trade clause.
January 7: The Giants are in agreement with Justin Verlander on a one-year deal, pending a physical. Verlander, a client of ISE Baseball, is reportedly guaranteed $15MM.
The future Hall of Famer will play his age-42 season in San Francisco. Verlander has previously suggested he hopes to pitch until he’s 45. There was never any doubt that he’d be back on a one-year contract somewhere. It always seemed unlikely to continue in Houston. Verlander had an illustrious run with the Astros around his first half stay with the Mets in 2023. He’s coming off a challenging season, though, leading Houston to let him walk.
Verlander took the ball 17 times and turned in a 5.48 earned run average through 90 1/3 innings. He had a pair of injured list stints — first in April for shoulder inflammation, then a two-month stretch between June and August related to a neck issue. Opponents tagged him for an ERA north of 8.00 over his seven starts after he returned from the latter injury. Verlander conceded after the season that he had come back too soon as he tried to contribute to Houston’s playoff push.
San Francisco believes there’s more in the tank with a healthy offseason. Verlander is only one year removed from an excellent season. He combined for a 3.22 ERA across 162 1/3 innings with New York and Houston in 2023. That came with a 21.5% strikeout rate that was well below Verlander’s prior level. That pointed to regression from his Cy Young form, but he still found plenty of success with diminished swing-and-miss stuff that year.
Verlander averaged 93.5 MPH on his four-seam fastball last season. That’s down slightly from the 94-95 MPH range in which he sat between 2022-23 but hasn’t completely fallen off the table. Pitching at less than full strength could account for that dip. If Verlander is fully healthy in 2025, it’s not outlandish to expect his velocity to rebound.
Health is an obvious caveat for a 42-year-old pitcher. Verlander has already defied expectations once, coming back from Tommy John surgery to win his third Cy Young at age 39 in 2022. Even if he’s not likely to repeat that kind of performance, he could be an asset as a mid-rotation arm and veteran presence in a staff that lost Blake Snell.
Logan Webb will be back to take the mantle as the team’s #1 starter. Verlander and Robbie Ray slot in the middle of the rotation as high-upside veterans who are trying to rebound from injuries. Former top prospect Kyle Harrison should be the fourth starter. President of baseball operations Buster Posey said last month that the Giants intend to give hard-throwing sinkerballer Jordan Hicks another chance at a rotation spot. Younger arms Landen Roupp, Mason Black and Hayden Birdsong could push Hicks for the fifth starter role.
This is the second free agent move of Posey’s first winter atop baseball operations. His big splash was a seven-year deal to install Willy Adames at shortstop. Posey has publicly suggested that continuing to strengthen the offense was a bigger priority than the rotation, but they evidently liked the value of a one-year roll of the dice on Verlander.
San Francisco had roughly $208MM in luxury tax obligations coming into today, as calculated by RosterResource. This will push them to around $223MM, a little less than $20MM shy of the $241MM base threshold. Verlander’s deal matches the $15MM salaries which veteran starters Alex Cobb and Charlie Morton also landed earlier this winter.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan first reported that the Giants and Verlander had agreed to a one-year deal. Jesse Rogers of ESPN reported the $15MM salary. Image courtesy of Imagn.
Interesting move.
Seems like a good signing. Not convinced he’s done yet.
There’s a sucker born every minute. Giants = saps
For $15MM? That’s an easy yes.
Signing a legendary vet to put around your young pitchers isn’t a bado move, they don’t have any mentors on the staff.
That’s a lot of “scarole” to pay for a “mentor”…….a comfort dog in the dugout wouldn’t cost nearly as much……and the young staff would react the same…..
Shades of 2009 Randy Johnson signing. 2026 World series, here we come.
@DTS. I concede. =)
Is that a Sopranos reference, Rocky?
$15 million is nothing for a veteran that has Verlander’s career stats.
You don’t get his career stats, though. You get a 42 year old with a -0.3 WAR and 5.48 ERA that was left off the post-season roster.
Somebody gets what’s happening here. He won’t win his 300th game the way Randy Johnson did when he was with the team at the start of the careers of Lincecum, Bumgarner, and Matt Cain, but he’s a veteran with a few Cy Young’s who can maybe teach what it takes to be successful in the major leagues.
Probably help out Bailey also. Maybe the way Johnson helped out Posey.
Rocky7…imagine they “only” pay 15mil for a guy who won a Cy a couple seasons again at age 39….AND get a fkn rescue dog?
Comfort dog won’t get any wins though. Lol
JV will be a good addition and just might win 10-12 games. If it looks like JV wants to go to a playoff team and hasn’t had much impact by trade deadline, I think the Giants could get a player and draft pick. Good solid move by Buster. It’ll be great to have a consistent lineup daily at most positions. And the guys in the everyday lineups are the type players who want to play 9 innings everyday. Can’t wait to see it go back to “old school lineups” for the most part. It might take a year or 2 to be more competitive for playoffs. New era. Can’t wait.
Hopefully he turns it around and you will look foolish with your comment
With that kind of a take it seems you are butt hurt about him leaving or you’re rooting for him to suck. I would never hope a player has a horrible year. Would like a player to slump when he plays my team though.
That you, Buckner, with the concept going through your legs?
This signing in turn will have Buster return as a POBO and player combo.
Absolutely agree with you LD99. I also think JV has a little more left in the tank. Can’t really get hurt with a 1-year deal either. I’d take JV over Cobb and Morton all day everyday. Sneaky good signing by the SFG
JV is a much better bet to rebound than Max. Good signing.
I think they both should do OK
with a team with offense 12-15 wins
To minimize future injuries I would try to keep their IP to around 125-140. Skip the occasional start
Probably only a doctor can make a judgement on who is the greater injury risk. Depends on usage and more
MadMax only pitched about 45 IP the last two years.
They both have the mileage on his body (wear and tear)
I think Scherzer could get at least 15M and probably more.
Max could help a lot of staffs but I think he would be a good investment for DET where he spent 5 years (originally with AZ)
Signing with PIT would be a good story.
PIT needs more help on offense though
HOU would be a good opportunity but they would want to trade off a few contracts but that could happen after the fact
I think maybe because of Barry Bonds playing in that ballpark , and Randy Johnsons final stint there with the Giants,
Something just feels right about legends retiring in the Bay Area
Great signing by the Giants.
A move the Padres could have made if they weren’t handcuffed by the Seidler Bros.
Not a fun time to be a Padres fan.
#selltheteam
To be fair, has there ever been a fun time to be a Padres fan? Just joking man. I already know the answer.
@rick last few years have been fun but outside a few runs, not so much haha
Rick Wilkins : 1984
1984 was a good year until it wasn’t
Dave Winfield, Tony Gwynn eras.
Padres wouldn’t be signing washed up verlander for 15m no matter what.
But the Padres will trade anyone they sign. Surprised Machado and Bogarts haven’t been dealt.
@pickle if Sheel hadn’t
stepped in you better belive Manny and Tatis would have been dealt.
You really think someone will take Bogarts and that terrible contract??
Who in the world would want Bogaerts?
Ha ha ha. Too funny.
No they most certainly won’t be.
what’s your take on Sheel? Would Sheel spend money like Peter to try to win? With the absence of any substantial moves this offseason, id guess Peters brothers didn’t feel the same about spending….
@Simm,
Right because Buster Posey knows nothing about pitching and whether so and so pitcher is washed up. .. You know better from your living room….right?
Alright man, we get it. Every signing you are on here repeating the exact same thing. Sorry about your Padres, cry somewhere that no one can hear you like you are supposed to
‘Cry somewhere that no one can hear you like you are supposed to”
Obviously lost in translation or more or less auto-corrected but nonetheless worth a good laugh.
So thank you.
Must be tough to not be able to sign ten pitchers and expensive middle infielders every season. Once the draft and international fa period opens, they’ll have more trade chips.
Ten pitchers er you mean no pitchers, lf, catcher, bench depth etc.
Team hasn’t spent a dime this offseason.
Yeah well at least you aren’t…weren’t an A’s fan.
Hopefully they sell it to John Fisher or whatever buddy’s name is from Oakland. That be great so he properly pair back the payroll and teach you how to properly be a fan
Great move for the Giants! Low risk high reward. I like their rotation now. This will be fun to watch.
Verlander signed for the same amount as Alex Cobb and Matt Boyd, essentially.
Great move?
Why are Giants such low information baseball fans??
This past season he missed most of June, all of July, and most of August, his last 7 starts he pitched 33.1 innings and gave up 30 runs (all earned), and had a 8.10 ERA. His fastball velocity is a concerning 93mph and his spin rates are cooked .
Why are you such a coward, Tony ?
Actually it’s high risk (age and last season’s performance) , and most likely “who knows” reward . Could be 15 wins or just as likely 2-3 and a long stint on IR .
Fact is the cost isn’t prohibitive nor is the length .
Good for the goose and the gander. I predict Verlander goes 9-5 with a 4.25 ERA and 120 innings. Just good enough to get the next contract too.
This probably means his HOF cap is definitely Detroit, which is fine.
I bet the Tigers give Verlander a legacy contract when no one else will help him scrape his way to 300 wins. Remember how elated the Detroit fans were to watch Miggy gimp out 3,000 hits?
40 more wins is quite a few seasons…. especially the way pitchers are used now.
Was it ever in doubt? His numbers with Detroit dwarf anything with the Astros.
Oh snap. Buster’s cooking.
Idk, that 42 year old gas might be stale.
Sure, but he’s gonna get the PacBell pitching boost
At Oracle Park
Ballpark-based pitching or hitting “boosts” don’t matter. It’s all relative to the production of the rest of the team, not to previous seasons.
For example if a Giants starter pitches a 4.00 ERA with the San Francisco average at around that, then goes to Colorado for a year and pitches a 4.50 with the Coors average at 5.50, they’ve provided more value to their team in Colorado.
I like you remembering it as PacBell. That was 25 years ago when landlines were still a thing and the park was brand new. Right on richter
Damn old guy. Hasn’t been called PacBell in 20 years.
If he wins 12 games with the Giants, and 10 games with the Rockies, he was better with the Giants, because you sign starting pitchers to win games.
100% but that’s not the “PacBell pitching boost”, that’s being a better pitcher
I would disagree. You pay starters to pitch well–and, ideally, deep into games to minimize the innings thrown by guys who belong in AAA–to give your team the best chance to win games. Pitchers can’t control whether their teammates can hit or field or how the opposing teams’ pitchers perform. Pitchers’ wins reflect a combination of things a pitcher can and can’t control.
Bill M —
“PacBell” is still the correct answer.
Good mentor for the young guys. There’s more to this.
Still better than Ti Walker
True. Pathetic offseason for an 80-82 Giants team. Off to a good start with Adames, then nothing. They needed pitching, they added. the 42 year old. They’d probably have done better with Griffin Canning.
Their offseason reeks of a team looking to play “meaningful games in August” before fans catch on and stop showing up in droves to New Candlestick Park.
Griffin Channing? In the same sentence as Justin Verlander? Oh my god, man, are you watching the same league I am?
Cooking meth
Let’s go
Did not see that coming
LoL. Why Justin why??? Tigers should have brought you back. Definitely an interesting decision
Buster Posey just wants to meet Kate Upton
Justin best watch out. Posey has more money than Verlander and Upton combined.
@LordD99 —
Posey career earnings: 171M
Verlander career earnings: 419M (inc. 2025 salary)
Upton net worth: 30M
Everyone wants to meet Kate Upton.
You spelled meat wrong.
That’s funny
Sexist but funny.
This guy is a loser. He was good before now he is just an insecure. Cannot believe the signing. if he pitches in more than 10 games I will eat my hat
You want fries wit dat?
Verlander is insecure? What an odd criticism of a ballplayer. He’s made like 200 million. Wife’s hot AF. WS winner. MVP. CY Young. HOFer. Seems to be winning all over the place, but I’m sure you’re doing good over there too. Geez.
He is.
Read the papers.
Read the papers.
@SFBay314,
Posey’s a winner. You should trust him.
Can’t really blame him.
mostlytoasty —
I’m bringing a cot to Oracle just so I can be around all the time to get a glimpse of her.
Next year or even the year after if he’s pitching until 45.
Considering he’s 38 wins away from 300, and potentially the last pitcher who may reach that milestone im rooting for some Dick Mountain Magic in SF.
@GM
Isn’t it crazy that starts we grew up enjoying like 300 wins, 3,000 ks, Ricky’s stolen base record and maybe even 3,000 his may never be touched? I mean we live in a day when reaching 200 IP or 5 complete games is a miracle almost. Sad.
So true. Not one mention here of Verlander’s career ZWARB, FLOBAB, or xwoBALONEY.
@BartHarley: His ZWARB has been trending up for 3 straight seasons, despite more traditional metrics suggesting age is catching up to him. Sneaky good signing based on the ZWARB alone. Anything you get from him beyond that is a bonus!
I agree with you @KnicksFanCavsFan, though Ricky’s record was always going to be untouchable. He has 50% more than 2 on the list
His MACNAMS and MEEGZORPS are off the charts.
Goes without saying.
Indeed, and I’m sorry for saying it.
Maybe Detroit brings Scherzer back instead?
Flaherty please!
I can not say his name with using an Irish accent. can’t help myself. I sound like Chibs from SOA.
I like this move, allows the Giants to see what the youngsters can do.
Actually like this move. Think what Verlander can do to help youngsters grow & develop.
that was my thought too – there is a LOT of young pitching on the giants and having a vet around is a good thing
Back in ’09, the year before the Giants’ World Series run began, the Giants had a similarly very young pitching staff. They signed Randy Johnson to a one year contract… and almost to a man the Giants pitchers that year credit Johnson with helping them take “the next step” and be better pitchers.
Seems VERY likely Posey is hoping for a similar effect from Verlander on all the Giants’ current young pitchers.
Exactly
I mean what’s the harm
That’s an unexpected match.
I like it, a proven arm…
Only 3 losing record seasons out of 19.
Totally proven arm.
That said, how much is left in the tank? What would be realistic stats for him in this upcoming season?
I’ll go 20 starts, 15 wins, 1 short IL .
Realistic? 7 starts, ERA over 6.00.
Proving that he probably has nothing left.
Everything’s in decline for JV. The Giants are entirely the wrong team to be taking a gamble on ancient pitching especially at a price not to far from what much better, more reliable starters are going for.
I expected Verlander or Scherzer plus a 1B/DH to wrap up the Giants’ signings. Alonso up next?
I just don’t see them signing Alonso unless they find a trade for wade that they like
Bryce Eldridge makes an Alonso signing unlikely.
I don’t agree with that. They don’t have a full time dh. If they sign Alonso, and eldridge pans out they can split time at 1st
TLC, Most teams don’t want a full-time DH, it robs a team of flexibility. In the past the Giants have been one of those teams, though who knows what their thinking on that is now.
Plus Alonso is asking too much for a full-time DH role. For what he wants he should be providing defensive value as well. Which is exactly why I’m against signing him. Even playing 1B, the defensive value is lacking.
Eldridge isn’t a guarantee. Giants have not had a hitter who mashed 30+ HR in 20 years. I’ll bet Alonso has a better chance over Eldridge
Agree, Eldridge isn’t a guarantee. But in general, no team signs a guy to a long term contract, when their best prospect plays the same position, and is near MLB-ready.
And I’d take that bet. Alonso is a flyball hitter and Oracle has a PF of 79 for RHHs and HRs. Eldridge has a 70-80 rating for power. He may not hit 20 HRs, but I’d take him over an older, declining Alonso for the next 5 years.
.Alonso doesn’t want to be DH.
Another good reason to not sign him.
Our top prospect is a first baseman. Prospects dont always pan out of course… but i dont see them spending big bucks on a 1B right now
Replacing Wade with Alonso at anything like the rumored prices is like shooting yourself in the face to ‘cure’ acne.
The orange continues. Note how every team he’s ever played for has orange as one of its colors: Tigers, Astros, Mets, now Giants.
Which means he will be traded to the Orioles at the trade deadline
LOL Nah,,,,just like last year, traded back to Houston in July. HAHAHAAHAHA
Except he has a no-trade clause in the contract.
Not true. Orioles have orange.
And?
Astrosrule didn’t say he’s played for every team that has orange. He said every team he’s played for has orange. dmar, you’d flunk logic class.
dmar, the point was not that he’s played for every team with orange as one of its colors.
Any idea what the Vegas A’s unis will look like? JV wants to know.
Interesting, I guess even if he gets hurt, he could be a good mentor to all the young pitchers
Great players usually make bad coaches
Good thing I didn’t call him a coach. Even if he never speaks to them, watching him prep could help them immensely
Yeah, instead of a top-notch coach at 100-200k, it’s better to spend $15,000,000 to watch JV put on his game face.
Edgar Martinez would like a word
Grrrrr. I had really hoped he’d go out in a Tigers uniform.
Next year
2028
Strange that we got Cobb and the Giants ended up with JV instead of the reverse. Both one year @ $15MM. Trade proposal: Cobb for JV, straight-up 🙂
Both good pitchers at this stage despite the injuries.
One man’s quest to have every orange jersey in MLB. Baltimore, get him for 2026.
we like our vets good and seasoned, maybe for his age 45 swan song.
Celtics Shaq
He looked like he had nothing left last season, a shell of his former self. And it was over 90 innings, so a pretty sizeable sample size… I’m not convinced he’s going to help them more than hurt them. We shall see..
That’s because he got hurt and came back way too early.
Randy Johnson looked pretty tired in his year 39 season, then bounced back and was strong at 40-41, then looked kinda done in his year 42 season, only to bounce back and pitch very well at ages 43 and 44, and was still valuable in his last year at 45.
Last season over JV’s first 11 starts, he allowed 2 or fewer runs in 7 of them. By the end of May he had a 3.26 era. Then he got injured, pitched only 2 games in June and 2 games in August, still sporting a sub 4 era on August 21st. Then, had a bad 4 out of 5 games September.
Maybe not as exciting as getting Burnes would have been, but this works out a nice fallback. The Giants have a lot of talented young pitching to utilize, as well as Jordan Hicks and Robbie Ray. But most of those arms have never tossed 130+ innings, and Ray is a high pitch count starter coming off Tommy John. Having an established arm come in to soak up innings eases the pressure and workload of those young steps without getting in the way of their long-term development. Plus, would it be shocking to see a guy like Verlander bounce back and thrive pitching in San Francisco?
This doesn’t mean the Giants are set to finish above fourth place in the NL West, but if they manage to surprise people it’ll likely be in no small part because their young pitching stepped up. So there’s not a lot of downside for the Giants here. If he’s great, maybe he helps a surprise wild card season or becomes an obvious trade deadline rental. If he stinks, he’ll soak up some innings to ease the workload of the young arms, arms that will immediately replace him.
Yes AND there’s still work to do on the offense.
In that park it’s a good move. Bet you he pitches 4.00 era and gives good innings.
Smart move for spring ticket sales if nothing else
Lol. Joke of a franchise.
Kate Upton with a shirt that says Giants across the chest is perfect. Well done JV.
Their marketing department is the best.
When I think of the two things in this world that keep me going, it’s baseball and boobs. Don’t get me wrong, I love my wife and kids, but 162 days a year? Plus the extra 30 for the playoffs. C’mon guys. Let’s get realistic here. Plus, boobs.
Fun bags!
Good work Rick. Twins would have worked out as well.
Claude, if he signs with Minnesota next year, we’ll know JV is just trolling at that point. I sincerely hope this happens though. God bless her and those giant twins.
Yankees works also.
Well written sir
Which number on the back, as if it even matters? 42? 44?
Isn’t 42 retired?
We all got THAT one wrong.
I had him going to the Tigers lol
@Reds—Not all of us!!!
Woo hoo. We signed Kate’s husband !
Good enough. I’ve got him as the better old boy option.
I was hoping for Scherzer
Eeewwww !
Ok. That’s food for thought. I had Verlander as a better fit culturally. Stock standard professional type. Max is a bit loose for me. You got Max as the better pitcher ?
toto, tahto
that’s tomayto, tomahto. I’ve always been a fan of Scherzer is all
I had them much of a muchness on the quality of pitching front. Have always harboured some doubt on the authenticity of Max’s psycho tough guy schtick.
But Verlander it is. Here’s to his good health.
One blue, one brown!
Padres looking like 4th in the division
Compare rosters and get back to me. Padres could sign 4 min guys and have a better roster than the giants.
True. Living above your means will get you that. For a little while. Enjoy it while it’s there !
Simm:So you’ve already seen next year’s standings. Let’s cancel the season now then and save us all from our teams’ place in the standings in 2025.
Responding to a guy who said the padres look like a 4th place team.
I said compare the rosters.
If we are going by LOOKS…As far as predictions, every fan has an opinion on that.
Nice. We’ll get Kate Upton in the stands if nothing else.
Doesn’t he enjoy spending time with his familia?
Im surprised he didnt retire
Im even more surprise he didnt resign w/ astro
And even more surprised its SF who ended up with him
Not a big deal. Every guy has one.
Not Whoopie. Sh’e got a ……….nevermind.
Called it! SF loves high leverage high risk high profile one year pitcher deals nowadays.
How much??
I’d rather of signed Walker Buehler to a 1 year deal…Hope we get to see Mrs Verlander at the park
Tigers sign Pablo Sandoval?
“Don’t get mad Verlander”
My all time favorite Pablo quote..
Two more big reasons for me to watch my Giants this season.
Humm Baby!
Wow. Interesting.
Let’s see what he has left.
I really thought they would sign either Burnes or Flaherty so this one surprises me. I also thought Verlander would go back to Houston. Curious where Flaherty ends up now.
give it a couple of months he will be back in houston.
San Fran has 4th place on lockdown
SF does love to have things on lockdown.
Sleeping Tigers.
Howdy Doody time!
“I’m takin my talents to Fishermans Wharf”
That takes me back…. I grew up partially in the bay area and remember when both Fisherman’s Wharf and Jack London Square were happening places… they’re quite lame compared to their ambiance 30+ years ago.
What exactly was “happening” about FW 30 years ago? It’s always been a tourist trap. Not that that makes it a bad thing, but it’s not what I would call “happening”.
Not crazy about the pickup but – cliche alert – there’s no such thing as a bad one-year deal. And the price is not exorbitant by this offseason’s standards for starting pitching. At least Verlander’s raw numbers should look better in San Fran’s hitter’s desert. And who knows? The Giants might catch lightning in a bottle.
This is what Alex Cobb got. Gotta like it for the Giants.
I bet the Orioles never even considered signing Verlander. I guess with the money the same it must have been an age thing right? No need to consider a 42 year old starting pitcher, let’s give the young up start…Charlie Morton the same money and save a year! Shrewd move Elias, I see you….doing nothing.
I agree no clue why the Orioles went with Morton instead of Verlander.
Probably because he’s been more reliable and if Morton puts up a year like last year…. Probably close to same results
Verlander was a stud in 2022 and 2023
Verlander 2023 War 3.5
Morton 2023 war 3.2
Does that make Morton almost a stud that hasn’t been injured for the last year? I’m not saying Morton will be better or verlander will be better I’m just saying if we go on recent performances which is probably what most people buying a product do Morton would money more WISELY spent. Verlander may come back and be a stud and Morton may be injured all year who knows there both old and its chance taken either way
Ok what was 2022 like? That was Verlanders Cy Young year. Without looking it up i will say he had a better 2022.
Both are old. Verlander has best pitcher in baseball upside. Morton does not. I will take Verlander as long as my team has some depth in case he gets hurt which Baltimore has.
I would say Verlander had a better year every year of his career except last year. I don’t think either pitcher was signed in hopes they would be an ace if I was hoping to get 150+ quality innings number 3 or 4 starter I’d go with Morton. I like Verlander and hope he pitches well and hits 300 wins. The question you asked is why would the orioles sign Morton over Verlander. I just said what I thought the correct answer was
And i think the Orioles needed upside over reliability. Just not a fan of the Orioles offseason.
I agree they did need upside. The orioles are my AL team to watch always have been. The Braves are my team and personally for 15 mil I’m glad they let Morton walk. I was hoping the orioles would take a chance on bueller personally, He will probably be a one year deal and has a lot to prove.
JV has amassed over 80 WAR in his career and will be a first ballot HOF, Morton has under 20 WAR in his career.
Yeah I picked Burhler for the Braves in the contest. Braves gotta do something eventually.
Hopefully they will. I would love to see the Braves and orioles in the WS but it’s not looking likely
Because Morton was actually productive last year?
Morton wasn’t any good last year.
Morton made at least 30 starts 4 years in a row, so based on that I suspect the notion is they will get more innings from Morton than Verlander. I suspect for Baltimore the decision came down to the quality of innings vs quantity of innings they foresee from Morton and Verlander.
Correct me if I’m out of line with this thinking, but I believe that the free agent has a say in whether or not they wish to sign with a team and for how much. It’s possible that Baltimore offered Verlander the same amount but he chose San Francisco for personal reasons. Organizations can’t sign free agents like you or I buy decongestant from the drug store for a fixed cost. The players have a say, as do other teams, as do the agents that advocate for their players.
The Morton deal doesn’t hurt my feelings for Baltimore given the premium cost of starting pitching this winter and the fact that we have approximately 1/2 of the offseason left.
SF all of a sudden a sneaky wild card contender. Good move.
Not really.
I think Lou needs to stay off the grains for awhile. For about 28 days.
Simm, Why? They should be better than last year. They should have JH Lee, and Ray for the full season. The young pitchers have gotten another season of development, and Ray has had more time to rehab from TJS. They’ve improved hugely at SS. They have a good defensive team including the best catcher in the game.
Nine more wins last season could have gotten them into the PS. The Tigers got 8 more wins last season, and the Royals got 30 more to make them AL WCs. The Mets did very little in the 2023-24 offseason, but improved by 14 wins to be a WC.
I’m not predicting it, but it’s not unreasonable that they make the PS. Of course, I suspect was your post had no more depth, or thought behind it, than a simplistic “your team sucks” offering.
My not really is based on all the things you said are…hope.
This guy this guy this guy all improve they have a chance.
That’s not likely that’s what I said not really.
“This guy this guy this guy all improve they have a chance.”
That’s not what I said at all. The only players I suggested improve are the young pitchers. Out of Harrison, Birdsong Roupp, Black, and Winn some will surely gain from their experience, and be better.
I suppose none of your assessment of your team is based on optimism.
A fan should have optimism.
Then there is likely reality.
Welcome to it.
While optimistic, my opinion was fact-based.
You might try using some.
Simms a non stop Giants thread shade thrower. Can’t help himself.
Yeah, I know. That’s why I included the line about his post being nothing more than “your team sucks”
Sometimes my desire for MLBTR to be a platform for considered thought and debate about baseball prevents me from ignoring the cheap stuff.
The funny thing is, I think he’s a Padres fan, and I’d love to see them win their first WS, if it isn’t the Giants.
Yeah mate. So compulsive for some.
Spot on. Same feelings re Padres. Some of their fans make it bloody hard though !
Simm: I don’t even know how to read that last comment. Didn’t make sense to me, but maybe it did to you.
I think it’s a good fit for Verlander and the Giants, Giants give Verlander the opportunity to win some games, and that’s all he is about at this point in his career. That’s a good thing for the Giants.
I don’t think he leveraged teams for much more, took the fair deal and is focused on the season, also a good way to move forward with his career.
It would be terrific if Buster announces his return as a DH/1B and Pablo is signed as a 1B/DH and limited amount of time catching. Then Mad Max signs for $15,000,001. Playoffs are a done deal. Mid 40’s is the new 30ish possibly.
If he’s worth $15M, how much do the D-Backs need to eat of Montgomery’s contract?
as @Rick Wilkins already commented up above:
Kate Upton with a shirt that says Giants across the chest is perfect. Well done JV.
applause Ricky
Why , does she have big ones?? I guess I should go check.
Screen name checks out..
I understand the Giants are also working on a one year deal with Frank Viola.
Buster Posey is already the best GM the Dodgers have ever had.
So clever ! Give yourself a pat on the back, you dodger blue comedic genius.
Los Asians Dodgers
I would rather the Tigers have signed JV over Cobb. They are both old and injury prone but for the same price, I think JV still has more upside.
$15mil is pretty big gamble. If anybody could pull off a big season at his age it is JV, but I wouldn’t take the bet.
Don’t know how much he’s got left but if he can give them half a season it will give more time for the young pitchers to develop and take some of the pressure off of Hicks and Ray.
JV must like orange and black. That’s all he’s ever worn.
*Except for a half season with the Mets.
The only other team in the MLB with black and orange is the orioles, and he’s never played for them.
I’m a Tiger fan. I am a huge Verlander fan. He’s been a horse. I think he can pitch 4-5 more years. Another Nolan Ryan like guy. I think he wants to get to 300 wins. But, he’s not going to get close pitching for the Giants.
I think it’s revealing that Scott Harris and the Tigers didn’t seem interested.
I hope he just rushed to come back last season, but he was atrocious after his injury. I cringed every time he pitched last season. Just didn’t seem the same.
From 42 on, Nolan Ryan did pretty well. So we’ll see about Verlander.
You spelled Roki Sasaki wrong.
Only about 3-4 years too late on this one lol
Well all right then; Time to party like it’s 2009!
Tiki…I will ask the question that none of us really want to know the answer to and no doubt I will regret asking. How did you come to see that?
Verlander REALLY wants that 300th career win.
It would be amazing if he accomplished it.
Nice big ballpark with a solid defense behind him. Good pickup for the Giants
I’m a little sad as an Astro fan but I am glad he went elsewhere!
For 15 million, in that ballpark, Verlander may yet defy father time for one more year.
no matter what he’s likely the last pitcher we’ll ever see win 260 games
and the tigers gave the same contract to alex Cobb. smh
Better hope that wasn’t the 2024 Verlander
As an Astros fan I just breathed a huge sigh of relief. JV has been a great player for the Astros, but I think his time is up. I wish him well in San Francisco.
Odds are 5 to 2 that he’s on the IL when they break camp.
Guess that’s the end of a potential reunion with the Tigers and for $15M there was NO way Chris I was going to sign that check and piss off Mama Marion. Would imagine Boy wonder Harris never would have brought this to their attention anyway
You guys got Alex Cobb at the same price. If he’s healthy he will throw many good innings for the Tigers.
Great Move. I figured he’d be in play along with Max. He’s a vet that can help the young guys and establish a presence with our rotation. It’s needed. And he’ll give us quality innings if healthy in our pitchers park. Not a 32 year old 500 mil contract. But this will definitely work in the short term.
Feels a bit like a Zaidi move. Couldn’t get Burnes, let’s get the 42 year old coming off what may have been his worst season of his career.
Buster isn’t done yet. With Zaidiot this would have been his top signing for the winter. The Giants are better than last year already. Better infielders, better outfielders and better pitchers. Now we’ll see what else Buster does and then go to camp to start letting the games playout.
Not ruling out a last minute short term Chapmanish deal for Bregman if he keeps holding out.
Put him at 2B and call it done.
The problem is Bregman is holding out for an unrealistic salary. Are the Giants willing to pay that? There’s a lot of teams who are willing to jump on him if the price comes down but we’ll see if Boras “allows” that
I am not sure Bregman has the range for second base anymore. Third base is his best spot.
Good to hear. JV should do well in that pitchers park.
Verlander cannot wear any uniform that doesn’t feature orange.
He’s going to love Orange Fridays at the park then.
He better pick another number, because # 35 is taken and retired
in San Francisco.
# 35 FOREVER GIANT
BRANDON CRAWFORD.
i’d take a chance on verlsbder for 15M before giving frankie montas whatever he got
interesting autocorrect there
Love this move
FTG4E
Oops.
Wow! Did not see this coming.
He’s not done yet, and Pac Bell is a good park for pitchers!
It’s not Blake Snell. It’s Snake Blell.
Verlander is 38 wins away from reaching 300 career wins. Odds are Verlander will continue pitching or make an attempt to pitch until he gets 300 career wins. It may take three to four seasons but Verlander may be the last pitcher to ever reach that milestone!
A show me signing ? Can you be healthy ? Pitch against the best team, and if you do well, the Yankee’s will sign you ? Hopefully he reports injury free and does well as he’s the last pitcher to have a chance for 300 wins in the game of baseball. Go Justin.
I still can’t fathom why anyone…anyone would sign with the Giants and play in that wretched city. Unless JV is planning on a 40-mile commute to work every day.
Whether signing Verlander for a year at $15 mil works out is something nobody will know until he gets thru the season, if he does.
But its a short obligation, so no long term damage done. $15 mil won’t make or break the franchise.
There have been a lot of $15 mil starters signed this off season. As a gamble its as good of a signing as any of them, better than some.
Verlander may be done. But the guys been done before.
SF is an elite place to reestablish your pitching stats as we’ve seen in recent years.. With even middling stats, he’ll be traded to a contender at the deadline as I’m sure is his plan with this all along.
Don Larson
Ray Sadeki
Sam McDowell
Steve Carlton
Barry Zito
Jake Peavy
The Giants have always had a thing for aging starters past their prime. Here we go again.
I see you need to go all the way back to 1962 to compile your (short) list.
It’s also somewhat fallacious. Larsen was 32 when the Giants acquired him. He went on to play for 2 more teams after the Giants. Sadecki’s years with the Giants were his age 25 through age 28 seasons. McDowell was 29 when acquired, and also went on to pitch for 2 other teams afterward. I’ll give you Carlton, but he also played for 3 teams after the Giants. Zito was 29 when signed. And Peavy played his age 33 through 35 seasons in SF. Zito (2) and Peavy (1) contributed to WS titles.
So out of 6 guys over a span of 60+ years you found one guy, Carlton, to fit your narrative. I see a lot of lists in the comments section, but yours might be the dumbest one I’ve seen yet.
Schooled him !
Really enjoy your research skills Jean.
The Giants definitely don’t make a habit of signing aging star pitchers but they did sign the Big Unit, Warren Spahn and Orel Hersheiser towards the end of their careers.
The guys who were still supernatural into their mid 40’s are Roger Clemens and Nolan Ryan. But there are plenty more who pitched at a high level well into their 40’s including Phil Niekro, Tommy John, Randy Johnson, Warren Spahn, Jamie Moyer etc.. etc.. If anyone can do it JV can.
Wilmer, Yeah, I think you’re right, and my point was, besides addressing the inaccuracies in the original post, that they have signed some veteran pitchers towards the end of their careers, but so have most other clubs. Sometimes it works out, and sometimes it doesn’t, but to single out the Giants, like no, or few other teams, do that is silly.
Geez I didn’t realize that I had to do an hour of research to make a point that’s obvious to all but the most casual Giants fans in order to avoid getting flamed by some wise-ass troll. But okay, I’ll bite. How about Rick Reuschel, Lary Sorensen, Goose Gossage, Dan Quisenberry, Bud Black, Danny Darwin, Orel Hershiser, Randy Johnson and Brad Penny. Is that enough to fit the narrative? To repeat: the Giants have always had a thing for aging pitchers past their prime. While this can work on rare occasion (Vida Blue, Livan Hernandez, Johnny Cueto), more often than not it proves to be a waste of time and money.
Funny, you complain about doing the research, but then call others “casual” fans.
No, that is not enough since again it falls short in your intended implication. Again:
Sorensen was 32 in his year with the Giants.
Gossage played for Yanks, Rangers, A’s, and Mariners post-Giants.
Black was 34 when signed. Cleveland signed him afterwards
Hershiser pitched for the Mets, and then went back to the Dodgers after pitching in SF.
Penny was 34 and was signed by the Marlins after his time on the Giants.
Livan Hernandez was 24 when acquired.
Cueto was 30 when signed.
And back to the first unsuccessful list:
Larsen pitched for the Astros, O’s, and Cubs later.
Sadecki pitched for 14 seasons for 6 other teams after leaving SF.
McDowell pitched for the Yanks, and Bucs, post-SF.
Carlton played for the W Sox, Twins, and Cleveland after the Giants.
Zito signed back with the A’s after his stint with the Giants.
So your new list also falls short. And your suggestion that the Giants are unique in signing veteran pitchers, when the Rangers, O’s, Yankees, A’s Mariners, Cleveland, Mets, Dodgers, Marlins, W Sox, Cards, Royals, Braves, Brewers, and Twins. acquired all the pitchers on your lists, after leaving SF, indicates your perception is incorrect.
Sorry for the length, but one last note. When a cogent counter-argument is met with the accusation of it coming from a troll says plenty about the factual basis of your assertion.
All were aging and past their prime. Hernandez and Cueto were listed as successes. I never suggested that the Giants were the last team that they played for. I never suggested that other teams don’t sign veteran pitchers. My statement is factual, notwithstanding your efforts to introduce new issues I did not address in my comment.
@Draker: I think you should quit whilst you are behind.
Why even mention Hernandez and Cueto when they were 24 and 30 respectively, and don’t fit the profile at all?
You can insist all you want, that you didn’t suggest other teams didn’t sign veteran pitchers, but let me remind you of what you said:
“The Giants have always had a thing for aging starters past their prime. Here we go again.”
According to you the practice is a “Giants’ thing”. The implication is pretty clear.
I thought this was a baseball site. Not a debating society.
Why can’t it be both? I.e. a place for reasonable debate about the sport.
I presumed the SFG would get one of Scherzer/Verlander and or some other veteran in need of a pillow contract. They have a good track record recently managing veteran arms either coming off injury or mixed performance season. If he’s past last year’s neck/shoulder issues I like him to rebound.
That starting pitcher depth should allow the Giants to both manage the workloads of the younger arms + Hicks and even allow for Verlander to build up his arm strength on his schedule. I’m curious how they bring Birdsong along in 2025, he jumped from 100 IP in 2023 to 130 IP combined MiLB/MLB. They have a luxury here as he’s a clear starter vs Black, Beck, Roupp who still seem more swing guys.
The article forgot to mention Tristan Beck as another arm who is a candidate to start games. Easy miss as his 2024 was mostly wiped out by surgery to address a blood clot but he returned very late with no impact to his stuff. Of that group of younger arms Beck likely has a more certain roster spot. He was a very good swing man in 2023.
Just watch. Verlander goes 15-5 2.65 era 180 K’s 155 innings. If he pumps his fastball up a little more he’d fine and even at 41 I can see it happening. Mad Max I’m pretty sure is going to see his numbers crash. Verlander actually is a pitcher. Max has always been fastball-slider. We’ll see, but I’d say Verlander pulls out one more vintage year. Too much of a competitor. Not that Max isn’t, but he’s so egocentric that it’s kinda gross.
He only plays on teams with orange in the team colors lol.
Remote press conference started out with support staff forgetting to mute themselves and talking over Posey, discussing changes to presentation graphics. Clown show.
Ha ha. Ouch. Rookie management !
Lucky it was just presentation graphics being discussed.
Good move for the Giants.
Verlander is sitting on 262 wins, 38 away from 300. Says he wants to pitch 3-4 more seasons, so does he get there?
OLD news!
