The Cubs added a new closer when they formally acquired Ryan Pressly (and $5.5MM) from the Astros in exchange for pitching prospect Juan Bello earlier this morning. That adds a much-needed veteran arm to a group that generally lacked late-inning, high-leverage experience. However, the Cubs “aren’t done” with addressing their bullpen, Bruce Levine reported recently in an appearance on 670 The Score’s Mully & Haugh Show (audio link). Meaghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune and Patrick Mooney and Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic both implied in writing about the Pressly swap that the Cubs would like to add another bullpen arm as well.
Among the pitchers with whom the Cubs have had some talks are Ryne Stanek and David Robertson, Levine noted. Both Stanek and Robertson had previously been reported to be among the Cubs’ targets. Either pitcher would make sense in the current context of the Chicago bullpen. Pressly seems all but certain to slot into the closer’s role after waiving his no-trade clause to approve a deal to a more favorable role with the Cubs. Any forthcoming addition to supplant Pressly would smack of last year’s Josh Hader signing in Houston — one that GM Dana Brown suggested earlier today “fractured” the relationship between him and Pressly to some extent (link via Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle).
“Anytime you take a major league player out of a role where they feel comfortable, I think it’s going to fracture your relationship some,” Brown said of signing Hader and pushing Pressly into a setup role. “I think we continued to communicate. He’s a true professional. And I kept it real as a true professional myself. I think there was some frustration, which I totally understand from a competitor. You’re moving a guy at a position who felt like he didn’t deserve to lose his job, because you acquired another elite closer like a Hader.”
With Pressly in line to handle ninth inning duties, barring any major downturn in his performance, a veteran who’s pitched extensively in a setup role would make sense. Robertson, already a former Cub, would be a logical fit. He’s excelled in both a setup and closing capacity in the past. The Cubs have more than $35MM worth of space between their current luxury tax projection (per RosterResource) and the $241MM threshold, so even the likely eight-figure salary Robertson will command should fit comfortably onto the books.
Other setup options of note on the market include Phil Maton, Tommy Kahnle and Andrew Chafin. If the Cubs want to roll the dice on an injury rebound candidate, any of Kendall Graveman, Daniel Bard, Lou Trivino, Keynan Middleton or Drew Smith could be had on affordable deals. Pressly, free agent signee Caleb Thielbar and trade pickup Eli Morgan are the three newcomers to manager Craig Counsell’s bullpen thus far in the offseason. Righty Colin Rea has experience both as a starter and a long reliever and could conceivably fill either role, depending on how the rest of the starting staff holds up.

Bring Robertson back! He was great during his Cubs stint
kgcubs
Aloha poopscab, I’d be happy with Robertson coming back. A lot of chatter today if Jed tries to trade for King and Suarez of the Padres. I’m concerned what would go back in trade. At least with Robertson it’s just $$$, though someone will have to be removed from the 40 man. Hoping for the best. Mahalo!

Usually when you hear about preller trades it’s after it didn’t happen. I could see where they spoke about this trade, didn’t happen and they moved on to Presley. Think it would be weird for him to waive is no trade and then wind up right back in the same spot with them getting another closer.
Unclemike1526
Bello was nice young P but he was in A ball and is a long way away from Wrigley and blocked pretty well so moving him wasn’t a big deal. I have no idea why Hoyer keeps spending money on cheap bullpen guys who aren’t cheap. You now have:
Pressly
Hodge
Pearson
Morgan
Miller
Thielbar
Little
Roberts
Thompson
Merrywether
I mean that can cover the 6th-9th right? I mean who are you going to sit? Spending 10 million on Robertson makes zero sense to me but nothing Jed does makes sense. He always spends up to the Tax and leaves himself no room to maneuver EVERY FREAKIN YEAR and still doesn’t get it! It’s exasperating.
I didn’t even count Wicks , Brown, Neely, Poteet and Rea. my starters are Steele, Imanaga, Tallion, Assad, and Boyd. What are they going to with all those guys exactly?
Swingandamiss
Kinda sounds like this year the plan is to have a little room to add at the deadline, but those trade deadline deals tend to be very expensive
I sure would rather a bat like Bregman in the lineup rather than another arm with a lot of wear too. Especially when you don’t have guarantees on Hoerner’s health and Shaw’s ability to make the jump. That would certainly wipe out the ability to add though.
Led Hoyer
Hoyer is absolutely horrendous at roster construction. You don’t sign Boyd, rea, and Theilbar and you have your Bregman money with plenty of cash to add a frontline starter with a Nico trade. Every year wasted resources.
Bucket Number Six
Cubs don’t want Bregman long term.

Iowa!

Anybody who thinks the Cubs are going to re sign Kyle Tucker needs to read this:

Mike… Did you notice the Dodgers signed both Scott and Yates? You can never have enough arms as the Cub’s bullpen has proven year after injured year. There will be 2-3 of those guys you listed that will be dealing with an injury issue all season. Never fails.
Unclemike1526
The Dodgers are signing everybody, If you noticed. The only way you’re going to beat them is by being smart if you want to be a Tax team. The question is, Do you think the Cubs roster is put together to beat the Dodgers, Phillies or Mets? Since last year the bench is still a problem for me. I don’t see how the guys they have now are better than the guys we had last year. They had a chance to shore up the teams biggest weakness from last year a Closer. I don’t think Pressly is any better than Neris quite frankly. We can only hope that Hodge stays healthy and runs with the job. But Hoyer thought Azlolay could do that too. Basically you’ve just switched out Bellinger for Tucker and acquired some more questionable bullpen arms. Be excited if you want, But there are some new names but the same old question marks. With the Farm the Cubs have, We should still be putting a great team on the field if it was done smartly. I don’t think it is.
rondon
It’s too soon to say Pressly isn’t gonna be better than Neris. But besides that, the bullpen is where games were won and lost in last postseason. If the Cubs BP is stocked up and IF they get to the playoffs, anything can happen. We see that every year… I’m not as doom and gloom as you on this. Other stuff, yes.

I’d go with Robertson hands down. Make it happen Cubbies!
Brick House Coffee Tables Inc
Pressly, Hodge, Miller, Pearson, Morgan, Thielbar, and whoever is not the 5th starter (Boyd, Rea, Assad). That’s 7 and the 8th needs to be the Iowa Shuttle spot.
I’d like another reliever like Robertson, but I think they will have to make a trade first.
Dogbone
You’re right Brick. And all you listed doesn’t even take into consideration guys like Brown or Wicks, not to mention if Horton or Birdsell happen to be throwing well at Iowa.
I know there will be injuries and regression. But that’s a lot of arms.
Mmm
Which is why I’m disappointed they didn’t get Yates or Scott. A lot of arms but not enough high end. And I love hodge. Maybe brown pops in the bullpen too.
Fernando P
There’s also Little and Neely. With the guys Dogbone mentioned making the roster, it leaves Keegan Thompson and Merryweather as trade/DFA candidates (as they have no remaining options)
Dogbone
Thanks Fernando, I totally missed Little.

Moises Ballesteros for Jhoan Duran and Christian Vasquez
Don Zimmer
NO WAY! Not a chance. Moises is a keeper.
3768902
Oh they all are! Until they ain’t
Unclemike1526
Ballesteros will never be a MLB Catcher. He’s Schwarber 2.0. He’s just a bat. A really good bat to be sure, But he doesn’t really have a position. He will limit Counsell so IMO if they can get something really good for him, I have no problem moving him.
Swingandamiss
Can I put Ballesteros in a deal to the Padres that includes Ethan Salas in return?
Unclemike1526
Works for me. That’s not a bad C swap. A good C for a good Hitter. With Busch, and Amaya and Kelly, Salas would be a nice piece to add.
Oldguy58
Robertson might be the best choice but he’s pushing 40
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Kyle Finnegan
Carlos Estevez
Andrew Chafin
Any of 2 of these 3. And I’ll be happy. However with the addition of Pressly Finnegan and Charlie Sheen aren’t likely to happen.
Acoss1331
David Robertson would be another good arm if Jed gets him. But yeah Finnegan and Wild Thing are probably not happening with Pressly now as the closer. One more solid arm and Jed will have a pretty good offseason, very excited to watch this team with all these moves!
cubfanforever
Estévez, age 32, Robertson, age 40.
Robertson would be fine, Estevez would be better.

Fire up the Sweet Home Alabama coming out the pen. Cubs got Ben Brown for him previously.

Why do I keep seeing Julian Merriwheather as a DFA candidate???
I’m sorry but no. Have some sense, especially given the other candidates that are way more deserving of the ole boot
justme
I agree when merriwheather has been healthy he has been pretty good..injuries have been a problem for him but still worth hanging onto..and i would like robertson..having hodge and robertson for setup guys would go a long way to securing late innings..which has been the biggest issue they have had
leftcoaster
Should’ve signed Estevez to close.

Honestly I’m fairly content with where the Cubs are as a whole now, if we don’t underperform for another season. Bullpen seems a lot more stable, a new superstar in the field, and a good amount of talent ready to reinforce in the minors. Just have to see how the actual season turns out now.
