The Braves announced that they have signed free agent outfielder Jurickson Profar to a three-year, $42MM deal. The MVP Sports Group client will make $12MM this year and then $15MM in each of the next two seasons. Atlanta designated right-hander Connor Gillispie in a corresponding move.
Profar, 32, has been wildly inconsistent in his career but is coming off his best season. Once a top prospect with the Rangers, he made it to the majors as a 19-year-old but struggled in his first few seasons. He eventually showed some promise but frustratingly alternated between good and bad seasons.
He had one of those down seasons in 2023, which is why the Padres were able to sign him last offseason for just $1MM, barely above the league minimum. The Padres probably couldn’t have dreamed about the return on investment they would eventually get from that.
Profar got into 158 games and stepped to the plate 668 times. His 15.1% strikeout rate and 11.4% walk rate were both strong numbers but fairly normal for him. He managed to do more damage when he connected, without sacrificing any of his trademark plate discipline. His 24 home runs were a career high. The three numbers in his .280/.380/.459 slash line were all personal bests as well, apart from a .471 slugging percentage in his nine-game debut back in 2012. His 139 wRC+ easily eclipsed his previous personal high of 113 and was also put him in the top 15 among qualified hitters last year. The switch-hitter did that damage from both sides of the plate, with a 137 wRC+ as a lefty and 147 as a righty.
Given his capricious production over the years, it would be fair to be a bit skeptical that he could keep that kind of performance going. However, there are some encouraging numbers under the hood. Profar’s 44.8% hard hit hate rate, 91.1 mile-per-hour average exit velocity and 7.2% barrel rate were all significantly better than anything he had done before. His .302 batting average on balls in play was a career high but just a bit above the .291 league average.
Though Profar has played all over the diamond in his career, he’s mostly a left fielder now. He’s barely played the other outfield slots in his career. He hasn’t really been an infield regular since 2019. He logged just 18 innings at first base last year, the only place he played apart from left field during the campaign.
Profar’s work in left hasn’t been especially well regarded. Last year, he was given a grade of -8 from Defensive Runs Saved and -6 from Outs Above Average. Despite that, thanks to his huge offense and ten stolen bases, FanGraphs considered him to be worth 4.3 wins above replacement on the season.
That production was huge for the Padres, given that they had notable financial restraints, which is why they took that $1MM flier on Profar. They surely would have welcomed him back, given the longstanding ties between Profar and president of baseball operations A.J. Preller. However, their financial situation is perhaps even more grim now than it was a year ago. They reportedly need to make significant cuts to the budget while also looking for solutions on the roster. In addition to Profar’s absence in left, they have question marks behind the plate, in the rotation and at shortstop.
Profar has also expressed a fondness for San Diego and probably wanted to go back, but he also probably recognized that this is probably his best chance at a free agent payday. He had previously signed a three-year, $21MM deal with the Padres going into 2021 but opted out of that pact after two years. He settled for modest one-year deals in the past two offseasons but has now secured himself a strong three-year deal. MLBTR predicted a three-year, $45MM deal for him at the start of the offseason.
For Atlanta, outfield has stood out as a clear area for improvement this winter. Ronald Acuña Jr. suffered a torn ACL in his left knee last year and missed the second half of the season. He’ll be back in right field at some point in 2025 but probably not on Opening Day. Players like Ramón Laureano and Jorge Soler were used to cover for Acuña’s absence but jettisoned after the season. Soler was flipped to the Angels while Laureano was non-tendered. The club’s acquisition of Jarred Kelenic last offseason also didn’t go especially well. He struck out 29.6% of the time and hit .231/.286/.393 for a wRC+ of 86.
Time will tell how the club plans to play it once everyone is healthy. Michael Harris II will be in center but Atlanta has its designated hitter spot committed to Marcell Ozuna. Profar and Kelenic can flank Harris for now but Acuña will eventually be back. The lefty-swinging Kelenic has better numbers against righties but the club presumably isn’t giving the Profar $42MM to be a short-side platoon guy.
Perhaps Kelenic will eventually get pushed into a fourth outfielder role once Acuña is back, though he may have a bit of time to prove himself worthy of more. Ozuna is an impending free agent, so perhaps the foursome of Harris, Acuña, Profar and Kelenic can better co-exist in 2026 and beyond. Kelenic does have an option remaining, so some time in the minors is possible as well.
With Profar now in the fold, RosterResource calculates Atlanta’s payroll at $212MM and their competitive balance tax number at $230MM. The latter is $11MM shy of this year’s base threshold. They opened last year at $223MM, per Cot’s Baseball Contracts.
President of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos has previously said that he expects payroll to rise and that the club is willing to pay the tax again this year. However, most of his moves have been focused on adding financial breathing room. As mentioned, Soler was flipped in a salary dump and Laureano was cut. Travis d’Arnaud had his club option turned down. The club restructured the contracts of Aaron Bummer and Reynaldo López to kick some money down the road.
If there is still some powder dry, then perhaps Atlanta will pivot to adding some pitching in the coming weeks. They were connected to Nathan Eovaldi earlier in the winter and reportedly had an agreement in place with Jeff Hoffman, with Hoffman to be stretched out as a starter, before they grew concerned by something they saw in his shoulder during his physical. They were also connected to reliever Tanner Scott earlier in the winter. All those guys have signed elsewhere but the interest indicates Atlanta is looking to add to the staff.
For clubs still looking for outfield help, the market is essentially out of everyday players now. Juan Soto, Teoscar Hernández, Anthony Santander, Tyler O’Neill and Profar are now all off the board. The best remaining outfielders are role players like Harrison Bader, Randal Grichuk and Alex Verdugo. Clubs like the Royals, Astros and Blue Jays have been connected to Profar this winter, though the Jays signed Santander earlier this week.
Gillispie, 27, just signed a non-guaranteed contract with Atlanta in November. He made his major league debut with Cleveland last year but only logged eight innings and was non-tendered at season’s end. In his minor league career, he has thrown 426 1/3 innings with a 4.01 earned run average, 24.3% strikeout rate and 9.4% walk rate. Atlanta will have one week of DFA limbo to figure out what’s next for him. Since the waiver process takes 48 hours, any potential trade talks would have to come together in the next five days.
Robert Murray of FanSided was first with the agreement between Atlanta and Profar.
Misspelled Dodgers
Looking forward to the jays runners up article for once since personally didn’t think he was a good fit there
Is he a player that plays in mlb and has reached free agency. Then the Jays were interested.
Any player who has a high on base and is left or switch hitter is definitely a fit for the RH heavy jays lineup
The money he would require would be better spent elsewhere as the jays already have Varsho, Springer, Santander starting Schinder, Barger and Loperfido are all corner guys and Straw can also be an option. That 13 million could be used on Esteves or mad max
I was kind of hoping they would just say screw it and sign Profar as well as those guys. Given everything that has happened the last few seasons they should just blow past the 2nd tax tier and improve in anyway they
can to try to regain some good will from the fans as well as improve their image with players.
Wander – We knew it wouldn’t be the Red Sox because he’s coming off a very good season and he’s not injured.
Wicked Good post!
Redsox absolutely dont need him
Rick – Agreed, but they keep saying they want someone who can hit LHP well and also able to cover 2B is a bonus.
If they don’t need Profar, then they don’t need Bregman or Arenado. Let’s hope neither signs with the Red Sox.
Fever Pitch Guy, Arenado would be a trade. bregman is a free agent but Arenado is a trade candidate. not a free agent.
I don’t think Arenado and his .646 OPS against left handed pitching last year would be much help. Facts are Arenado doesn’t do much hitting against anyone lately.
So you think Profar and Bregman are comparable? That puts you at odds with every baseball insider out there. Profar had a career year. You think he’s going to repeat it and the Sox should have bought high? Bregman had an excellent second half—playing with bone chips in his elbow. I guess if the Sox actually do sign him we can count on you to rip their miserable off season, because Crochet is “unproven,” despite having suitors everywhere and being routinely ranked as one of the five best starters in the game.
Adv – Thank you, yes I botched that sentence… normally I review what I type. I blame it on multi-tasking! LOL!
Ken – I totally agree! The Red Sox keep using the excuse they need him because he’s a RHB, but he’s got serious reverse splits for each of the past three years. He has sucked against LHP since 2022, but they want him to “balance” the lineup by batting righthanded? This is nothing more than Cora wanting his BFF.
stel – They are comparable in that they both can play 3B, SS and 2B and both can hit from the right side of the plate. therefore they fit the profile of what the Red Sox are publicly seeking.
Would I rather give Profar $42M/3 years vs Bregman $150M/5 years? Absolutely.
Nobody is saying Profar is worth what Bregman will likely get, we all know Bregman is the far better defensive player.
Send your complaints, Padres fans to…
The Seidler Bros.
The Seidler Bros are ruining Padres baseball.
On the flipside, thank you Jurickson for everything!
Love Profar. He loved San Diego. It’s. A shame he isn’t back after his performance last year. Even if he isn’t likely to repeat it.
Simm, at 3/42 I would not have liked the signing by SD. I defended that first contract with opt outs throughout the term and yes, last year was a big win for both SD and JP (he got a payday).
I’ll look at it like this – at 14 mil I’d rather have Dylan than JP. Let’s see what Tirso has to offer.
Hopefully, Dylan is in rotation now – unless a total blow you away / can’t refuse offer comes along.
Tirso: 255/21HRs/$800K Profar: .260/22HRs/$14M
You comparing EL Paso and the PCL with the major leagues? Now, that’s funny.
I’m projecting 2025 for both players
El Paso numbers are significantly inflated due to the dry air and elevation, if yiu have been there you would know.
Dry, desert air at elevation compared to the marine layer at sea level.
Big difference.
Coors Field vs Petco Park.
Not to mention level of talent difference.
Profar had a sub-par season at altitude at Coors. Every other year is a down year for him, and a down year coincided with his year at Coors.
You forgot a 0 .0255 and a decimal 2.1 HRs
Yes, I was projecting based upon my best judgement, not based upon El Paso numbers. He took a major leap however at AAA last year, adding considerable exit velocity and loft to his swing. He’s a big guy with incredible bat speed, but is only now growing into his power.
SELL THE TEAM SEIDLER BROS.
Why? Their valuation is about the same as the Nats, Orioles and Brewers. They have one of the smallest media markets in MLB. Their revenue is about the same as the Twins. Yet they have the 8th largest payroll and AAV in MLB. They are living beyond their means. What do you want?
I don’t want a firesale.
If you mean like when they offloaded McGriff and Sheffield? That isn’t going to happen. Manny, XB, Tatis, Darvish, Croneworth and Merrill aren’t going anywhere. Suarez will walk next year. So will Arraez and Cease. You got get something for them and probably knock $20M to $25 M off payroll in the process. Get down to where AZ and SF are. That is a budget that is sustainable
Nobody cares what you want. Nobody
Sell the team every owner that isn’t spending!
I don’t mean that as sarcasm I actually do think if you own a baseball team you should be able to spend like a billionare
Padres payroll is over $200 mil.
I’m gonna guess you haven’t been a Padre fan for more than 20 years?
How much do you think SD’s payroll should stay?
You think they should pay the Luxury tax every season even as it goes up and up?
On the case of Seattle, yes. You have a cheapskate owner. Bigger valuation and making more revenue than the Padres, sizeable media market and nice margins. 19% in 2023. But the payroll is 17th. Down with the Twins. Does he really care about his team or their fans? What’s his excuse?
And then Manny’s salary goes up $8 million in 2026 and another $14 million on top of that in 2027.. At least Darvish’s contract was somewhat front-loaded, and Tatis’ doesn’t escalate until 2029.
Very happy for Profar and hope the Braves are too. AJP has a conundrum. Either trade what’s left of a battered farm system that might get you another shot at the playoffs but nothing later, trade Cease now to fill a few holes that ultimately don’t help since you’re losing Cease or run out what you’ve got and hope somehow you back into the playoffs even though you’re facing the Big Blue Deathstar multiple times this season and now facing Corbin freaking Burnes with the DBacks… Not good odds no matter how you slice it. I will still cheer them on regardless even as I suspect Dodger fans did for their beloved team when they had to live through the McCourt fiasco years. At least they have a prime TV contract which covers a lot of sins. Padres? Not so much.
@Town
True, the Dodgers have improved, but the Padres are still a team that won 93 games and almost beat the Dodgers. Other than Profar, who have they lost?
Musgrove is gonna miss the season. I could see the D’Backs passing them, but they still might be a playoff team (5th or 6th seed).
Kyle Higashioka, Ha Seong-Kim, David Peralta, Donovan Solano, Tanner Scott, Martin Perez.
So, five position players, including Profar, and two pitchers.
Profar was huge reason along with Higashioka as tonwhy they won 93 games.
They have 89 wins now without Profar. I hope to heck they keep Cease. If they cannot, I hope to heck they get multiple viable major league pieces back who will contribute immediately.
@towinagain
Absolutely. At this point, neither has been suitably replaced. This has to be the year for Campusano to become a steady performer, right?
Two of those are old bench buys. They were great…but losing Peralta and Solano aren’t losses that can’t be easily replaced..
Yes, but so far, they haven’t replaced them. I did a double-take a few minutes ago when I noticed the Padres have just 12 position players on their 40-man roster (and just 34 players total). What are they waiting for? Randal Grichuk would be a perfect righty-swinging platoon bat for them.
89 wins without profar, plus’s
Higgy 1.4
Scott 4
Solano 1
Peralta 1
Perez idk
To go with profar 4
That’s a lot of missing war
The padres could just moneyball it and somehow do better with less than the previous year
Mike shildt is the perfect manager for this challenge
ummm Soto lol
If the Padres signed this contract complaints galore
We weren’t gonna give him $42 mil.
Even you have to know this Towinagain
Everyone knew he wasn’t coming back at 3yr/$14M, I’m happy though that a team is paying him!
Agree love pro deserves the pay but too much for padres take on .prellers cookin something up.
Profar owes the Padres a thank you as well, Preller has always given him a shot.
Greed at its worst. Trying to steal from your brothers wife and his children.
Padres are still going to be a very good team. WC very much in their wheelhouse.
Very good???? On the verge of trading their best pitcher. No LF. No C. No money. Only a matter of time before Manny goes full sulk. Too many albatross contracts and the 28th ranked farm. And if all that isnt gloomy enough Padres fan has a nasty legal battle completely engrossing ownership that could drag on for years. If MLB doesnt step in and force a sale the Padres will soon be a shell of a once potent and rising team. Sad days for baseball fans in SD.
It’s the padres fault that they made horrible commitments and now can’t spend any money
Unless this becomes a frank mccourt situation where bankruptcy is filed the padres probably still won’t be sold
The Padres know Profar better than anyone else and made him an offer they felt was fair. The Braves doubled that offer. I can’t fault Profar for taking the money.
The Padres have increased payroll $40 million and CBT payroll by $20 million over the end of last season. Currently they have the 6th highest payroll in baseball and are one of 5 teams to increase their payroll over last season. Even after losing their RSN deal their revenue grew to the point that they are now a revenue sharing paying team. They are not filing bankruptcy.
They are not cutting payroll; they are just not making questionable moves to pay a 32-year-old player that has not been a consistent performer to the point he has averaged just 1.5 WAR with the Padres and plays poor defense. I get why they didn’t sign Profar. I don’t like it, but I understand.
Last season Profar was not on the Padres yet on January 24th. Neither was Wandy Peralta or Dylan Cease. Neither was Arraez, D Peralta, Solano, Scott, Hoeing, Adam, and a couple others I am forgetting. The only FA of note they had signed by January 24th was Yuki Matsui and Woo Suk Go.
Plenty of people on this site and writers were blasting the Padres in years past for not giving prospects a chance. Now they will. Ornelas was expected to be really good when signed to a big deal at 16. Now he is 24 and finally getting his shot. I am excited to see what he can do. Still hope the Padres pick up a backup like Peralta but since Profar is not coming back let the kid play.
I guessed correctly on the poll earlier. I would like a parade.
BJ Upton 2.0
Love this for the Braves
Braves will love Profar
Will he be the Padres’ Profar or the Profar that has played for other teams?
Also not sure why they said he struggled his first few seasons. His first 2 were completely wiped out with a serious injury..
“ Why did the Dodgers sign Kirby Yates?
Because they could”
As a Mets fan I wouldn’t be happy if we outbid EVERY player just because we could. I hope we never do/ become that.
Mets – With all due respect, did you not follow the Mets in 2023?
Scherzer? Verlander? Ring any bells?
Makes sense i suppose. Curious to see what it costed them.
3 years $42M. That’s more than I thought he’d get.
How does it make sense?
Won’t pay Santander $16 mil for 5 years but willing to pay Profar $14 mil for 3 years.
And after the deferrals Santander’s true value was calculated at $14 per over 5 years
Santander is 2 years younger, so yeah it’s slightly longer but the contract ends at the same age Profars does.
Not to mention Santander made sense to fill the outfield for 1 year, and could slide over and replace ozuna at DH after Ozuna’s contract ends.
Profar was a better player than Sanfander was in 2024. And if you can’t figure it out the amount of money hadn’t been announced at the time I made the comment. So all I was saying is the fit was a good fit.
I would argue Santander’s production is much easier to project. He’s hitting 30+ bombs this year, while if Profar turns back into a pumpkin, no one will be surprised.
Santander got more years. He got an opt out and he costed a draft pick. So Santander costed more. But as I said Profar had a better 2024.
Santander is much more consistent. Profar had a good year last year, but the year before that he was 1.3 war below replacement level.
Cost
Draft pick
@Dream:…..and 2 less years. Profar by more than a nose.
Those deferrals make it close. Both bargains compared to earlier. Gotta have some patience. Let LA NY do their thing. Then scoop up what’s left.
Kepler 10m! Winker a dh for near that. Pederson dh. Conforto 17! Soto for 800m!!!!!!!!
I’m sure the Braves are looking at some sort of DH/OF rotation next year if Ozuna doesn’t return – specifically to guard Acuna’s knees.
SUCKERS! Don’t expect him to repeat his career year.
Interesting, not super surprising ig, but interesting, the Padres are really gonna do nothing then huh
I agree. Not that this is such a great move for Atlanta but at least they did something. They still need another starter and a better shortstop.
Hopefully that shortstop is ha-seong Kim, if not I’ve seen articles all over the place suggesting that we trade for bo bichette, but I don’t see any reason the Jay’s would do that. They aren’t in rebuild mode, and even after a down year bichette still has immense talent. If they were to trade him, they’d want a haul. The only way I see the braves getting him is if he’s still underperforming by the trade deadline and won’t cost that much in prospect or player capital.
Bichette rumors are surfacing because the Jays outright said they are looking to trade him.
Not sure he’s a good player to go after though. Underperforming and contract ending soon. Braves certainly won’t pay him so you bank on him having 1 good bounce back season?
Anything is better than Arcia of course, but Bichette isn’t exactly a great opportunity or anything. Factor in what it might cost to trade for him and probably not worth it.
I agree. Personally I’d rather see the braves nab Kim, and have arcia hold it down until Kim is healthy and ready to play!
To be fair Bo was going through some stuff last year. Not only was he hurt, but there was a big public blowup between his brother and father. His brother publically accused his father of abusing him as a child. His family was kind of falling apart.
Pads gonna deal Cease n probably Suarez to clear payroll.
Wow. Surprised the Padres didn’t bring him back. He seemed to fit the culture there
The salary wasn’t a fit.
If by salary you mean spending anything at all, then yeah the salary wasn’t a fit. I’m wondering how long AJ Preller will stick around for this. Just sitting around with his hands tied isn’t really how he rolls.
I suppose he could go to another organization and mess it up too.
Preller’s a good GM. He had his owner willing to spend gigantic dollars and overpay players to win a chip before he died.
He now has no resources to make his team better. Preller’s deal is up next year. I’d be surprised if he isn’t in charge of another club in ‘27 with the current mess in SD. Unless they get things sorted out
If the only way you can have success is if your owner is spending gigantic dollars and overpaying players then you aren’t a good GM.
That’s not the only way he’s had success. He’s one of the best amateur scouts in the entire game. Futile having this argument with you but Preller isn’t SDP’s problem.
If Jon Mozeliak would’ve traded half the prospect capital that preller has in the last 3 years—the cards would be horrible & have the worst farm in baseball.
Yeah he’s great at scouting and drafting. Then he trades those guys away not so great.
I don’t understand your comment about Mozeliak. I am glad he hasn’t traded away all the prospects like Preller has done in San Diego. That’s a big reason the team has had only 1 losing record in the last 17 years.
Preller’s traded away all those prospects and his team will still win more games than the Cards. His top 2 prospects are better than St Louis’.
He’ll have a job whenever he wants if it’s not San Diego at the end of his deal.
Salas is overhyped. Quinn Matthews is a stud wait and see.
He got $42 mil after playing for $1 mil last year so no…..not the time for SD to be hoping he’s got 3 more like years in him
I used to really think Preller was a bad GM, but it’s become pretty apparent that most of the time he is doing what ownership tells him. That’s likely how he kept his job for so long. Seeing how differently the team was run under Ron Fowler, then Peter Seidler and now his family the transactions involved in each time period clearly were not of Preller’s doing. The changes in the way the franchise spends/ operates totally line up with who was in the owners box. Plus what Preller did last year with the roster, losing Soto, Hader, Snell, Lugo & Wacha was pretty admirable.
99- exactly
The thing about Preller is he can draft and find international free agents. So he can operate with a small budget.
I think he lacks certain GM skills, but the dude sure can pick ’em. I’d like to see him on a team like the WS or LAA. Tell him to do nothing but beef up the farm for three years, but them let him loose with a real budget in years 4-6.
Agreed. Preller sold me last year. I always thought he was an excellent scout but he’s had varying resources and directives from ownership. The way he navigated and put a team together last year was top tier work.
Preller’s tough n gave LA a run for their money while cutting payroll. Don’t believe he’d have much trouble finding future gig.
They are not taking on any salary until they can shed some.
Change in leadership. I believe we are focusing on the drafr versus FAs
That’s what happens when you’re broke.
I wish the Angels were broke like the Padres so they could increase their payroll by $40 million and be right up against or just over the CBT line.
Other than Matsui, Woo Suk Go, and Wandy Peralta, what FA did the Padres sign last season? No one big that is for sure.
None. The last big FA signing was Bogaerts.
Since Bogey (who was a Peter Seidler FA decision), AJP works via trades. Which I expect will come in the next few weeks.
Preller’s only major league FA signings last offseason were Matsui ($3.25 million), Woo Suk Go ($1.75 million), and Wandy Peralta ($4.25 million). 2024 salaries in parentheses.
The trades last season brought the Padres King, Vazquez, Brito, Higashioka, Cease, Arraez, Scott, Adam, Hoeing, and Perez.
Estrada, D Peralta, and Solano were all signed on minor league deals. Kolek was a Rule V pick.
Those horrible contracts – Machado and Borgarts – are really going to bite the Padres for a long, long time. The bottom party of their lineup is pretty bad, as is starters 4 and 5. They could easily finish in 4th in the West.
part*
Machado and Bogey are significantly overpaid but still likely to be productive this year.
They need an outfielder, a catcher and a starter at the bare minimum. If they get those 3 things—-I still have to put them ahead of the Giants.
2026 is where things fall apart if they hold Cease and King without adding future value. They’ll have an injured Musgrove and Darvish in the rotation followed by nothing. Arraez & likely Suarez will be gone too. Machado and Bogey are a year further out of their prime……That’s when things are dire.
@Jbig – an outfielder, a catcher and a starter all signed at bare minimum sounds about right.
Those were Peter seidlers doing.
Yeah. I can envision that meeting where Seidler threatened Preller with being fired if he did not handout a contract to Bogaerts that no other GM in baseball would have gone near. Same with Cronenworth.
If you can’t spell the guy’s name, it’s a pretty good bet you have no idea what you are talking about.
It was a typo. So critical.
And it still doesn’t change the fact that Bogaerts is a horrendously bad contract.
I stand by my comment.
Ehhh
That’s what I thought, but Profar would’ve waited so apparently they’re not planning that either
Welcome back!
And the Padres winning off season continues
I never would’ve thought that the padres would spend less in an off-season than the mariners and athletics and so on
The siedler bros could become as bad as the owners for the moneyball Oakland a’s where it’s all about profit
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
The siedler bros could become as bad as
==========================
In their defense, the brothers probably aren’t as rich as Peter was. According to Fortune magazine, the SDP lost $116M last year.
If the brothers aren’t billionaires like Peter, you can’t afford to lose $116M each year.
According to the padres they are in good financial shape. So I’d believe them over magazine that has no access to the padres books.
The padres were a revenue sharing team last year which means they had above avg revenue. They had a payroll of 169m last year. Zero chance they lost 116m. Zero. That would be saying payroll would have needed to be 50m to break even.
This is nonsense.
It was a 2023 loss. Not 2024. Made a mistake about which last year.
The Padres started being a revenue sharing payor in 2023, the year they lost their RSN deal.
Yeah zero chance the padres lost 116m in 2023 either.
Now what we don’t know is how much the padres spent on other items that have to do with the stadium upgrade or the parking lot deal. It’s possible spent a bunch of money on those items causing them to lose money that aren’t payroll related.
With the Moneyball A’s it wasn’t all about profit, it was all about just hanging on to the team.
They blew their whole wad in past offseasons, there might not be much left in the tank for them to keep adding, but they’re still a good team so it makes no sense for them to tear it down either. Leaves them in this weird holding pattern.
Really hoping they aren’t giving him more than 12M a year. I know it isn’t super realistic, but I don’t trust him to perform.
If it’s for a couple years then so what? I wouldn’t give him 5 years at that price.
His second half numbers don’t inspire any confidence either.
You are not wrong. The last 2 months of the season Profar only hit around .230 with 6 HR and 15 RBI. His OPS was around .740 for those 2 months (not completely horrible, but a far cry from his season number of .839). His OBP wasn’t too bad, but it was also propped up a bit with 11 HBP over those 2 months.
It obviously could have been worse, but those numbers the last 2 months look a lot closer to his career numbers than his overall season numbers. Maybe the Jays dodged a bullet.
AJ Preller absolutely devastated.
In pieces, I tell ya! </3
We should pass a hat around to collect money from everybody and send him a condolences card and a nice fruit basket!
Call Jeter, he’s probably got a gift basket laying around…
This will clearly have him and ownership at odds.
Lol
It doesn’t matter. If the Pads are within 5 games in July they’ll trade to get him back.
5 games of Arizona?
Ain’t no time to stash the gumbo
Or rattle around in a cage.
The sacrificed child’s made bubbles
And spittle is everywhere enraged
Well well well
Excellent move by AA.
A classic completely out-of-the-blue AA signing.
Its his Kelenic move of 2025. Trying to be the smartest guy in the room, he acquired a player not worth what he paid to acquire him.
Crazy been waiting for a move. Is that sure I like the move
The Bargain Bin Braves strike…wait..what!? AA woke up!
Gee I didn’t know the braves were the only team signing players to minor league deals….
“Danger, Will Robinson!” Likely a one year wonder.
He’s had four seasons with an OPS+ above 100 and three seasons with 20+ HRs. He is erratic though.
They lose Morton & Fried , they still haven’t replaced either one
Spencer Strider has entered the chat
Morton would have been SP4 without Strider and SP5 with him. They have plenty of options including 2 top prospects (AJSS, Waldrep) that need some time, and other options being Grant Holmes, Ian Anderson (without options), etc.
Rey Lopez should have more IP this year along with Schwellenbach, who was one of the most effective rookie SP last year. They could still add a vet arm (Flaherty, Kyle Gibson, Quintana) to eat some innings that would help. Considering how much they were committing to Hoffman, they know that.
I can definitely see the Braves going into the seasons without picking up a starter and trying an assortment of the arms you mentioned. If it doesn’t work than I wouldn’t be shocked if they make a move in July at the trade deadline. I wonder if they pick up another middle infielder tho or just roll again with Arica
I’d think they’re still keeping tabs on Ha-seong Kim, especially since that’s another Boras client. Who knows what a contract looks like with injury questions…but Arcia isn’t paid much and still would have the starting job until Kim is fully healthy.
@DMC: Profar isn’t a Boras client. He changed representation in Feb of 2024 to the MVP Sports Group. Same agency that represents Machado and Tatis Jr.
I’ve been calling for the braves to nab Kim all off-season. He makes too much sense. With all the heavy hitters the braves have he would be the perfect defensive compliment but also still have a decent bat to boot, and like you said while not the best option, arcia holding it down until Kim gets healthy wouldn’t be bad at all.
Good catch. I thought I saw another article also mention, but Baseball Reference still has him listed as Boras Corp, too. Thanks for the note.
Not comparing him to the illustrious Prado, but we haven’t had as sharp of a utility knife since Marteen (Martín). I miss that guy, but he makes too much sense with all the injuries last year…if he can pass the physical. (cough cough)
I think with the Profar signing it pretty much eliminates the chances of signing Kim. Felt like it was one or the other between upgrading SS or a better OF option. AA has seemingly made it clear hes staying under that next threshold this year. I’d expect a few more low flier on pitchers the closer it gets to the start of the season. 1 year deals, non guaranteed contracts, or split contracts – type of signings.
Maybe that pitcher would be Spencer Turnbull? I wonder if a rotation has ever had more than 3 Spencer’s at one time? lol strider, schwellenbach, and Turnbull? It’d make for an interesting story, plus he and Holmes can take turns starting while also coming out of the pen, wouldn’t be bad for either one of them in my opinion.
I don’t think it necessarily does. AA might still make a push for Flaherty if the price and years of contract go down. He could also work out a 2 year back loaded deal with Kim. But he will probably just wait until the trade deadline to do something.
Padres fans crying
Where?
Hey Gwynning whatever happened to the gorilla Harangue/Harape??? I remember he would always get a lot of flack. Did he get shamed into nonexistence here?
Nah he’s always around namechangin’ & stuff. He likes to hide and snipe and then melt back into the bushes like the Homer meme!
He’s alive and well. We always know who here is Ryan. There’s a giveaway nuance
Iggy- Just look for the most argumentative and caustic “Padre fan” fella then you probably found the resident gorilla collectively known as “Ryan”
Many, many pseudonyms… but why is he trying to hide? Is it because he never has any valid points? Or is it more psychological than that? I hope to never find out! Cheers Iggs
@Gwynning: The same thing BITA/blackpinkinthe area and his many other screen names does. Snipe, troll, insult and change screen names. Rinse off the slime and repeat.
100% Jeff, although I did hear BITA (Joel B.) got banned twice here already and from countless other baseball sites.
Heard the same thing. Wish MLBTR would stop letting him come back. He was extremely rude to Tim Dierkes in a discussion recently. Tim showed a lot of patience dealing with him.
Both of them?
Yes we are. We love JP
Brilliant!
Rip the dream
Well that was unexpected. I enjoy those!
How long is Acuna out?
End of May.
Possibly the first month or so
Is this so long Kelenic ? Love this move for the Braves fans. What if Profar is only getting better as he ages (like wine) and next season is even better? Bye Kelenic brat kid.
Kelenic isn’t going anywhere, i imagine. They invested too much into acquiring him. He will be the RF until Acuna comes back and then move into the 4th outfielder slot since he can play all three positions. Unless they can find someone who wants to trade a pitcher for him.
I wouldn’t necessarily say that we’ve invested too much into him because we barely traded anything of value for him, but he did get way too much playing time last year in my opinion, and we did just agree to terms on a deal without going through an arbitration hearing, but if he’s not clicking by the time acuna is back, he’s as good as gone, or atleast stashed in the minors and non tendered at years end. He’s had way more than enough time to get it figured out, with two different teams now. We all need to call it as it is. Kelenic is a 1st round draft pick BUST!
They took on over 20 million in dead money to get him. I’d call that a significant investment even though they didn’t lose any prospects. Is he a bust? Yeah for sure. They thought he was going to be their everyday left fielder for years, not a backup outfielder. That said, he’s still young and he has value. He’s going nowhere unless they can flip him for a 5th starter or a high leverage reliever.
Cole Phillips was a 2nd rd draft pick (2022) they traded for Kelenic and has already undergone 2 (!) TJS by 21 y/o. Oof. I don’t know if I’ve heard of that that young. He doesn’t have any pro stats to show of it. Really hope he gets out there.
So what’s his track record for being a brat?
What if last year was an outlier? Sucker!
Good for Braves fans.
I like Profar. I hope he has a good year.
I thought he was likely to end up in Houston on a 2 year contract
ATL gave him 3 years and more total $. HOU wasn’t as good. IF they had traded an freed up 14M Presley they might have been able to make a better offer. Also 1 last chance with Bregman
Maybe Profar preferred ATL over HOU independent of the $. Friends with players on ATL?
San Diego 760 is saying cease to the twins is in the works. Jon & Jim.
Still need a starter AND a reliever but the bats are set for sure imo.
Wait, AA and Scott Boras?
@Jesse: Nope. Profar left the Boras Corp on 2/12/24. He’s represented by MVP Sports Group now. Same agency that represents Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr.
Thanks for the clear up Jeff! I thought it sounded too good to be true. The original article even said he was represented by Boras so I was shocked to see they changed it.
No problem Jesse. I didn’t see that reference to Boras. I must have read the article after they changed it. I just knew the only Boras client AA has signed since he came to Atlanta was Dallas Keuchel. Shea Langeliers changed representation to Boras after he was drafted by the Braves. So technically, 2 players under AA’s Braves regime have been repped by Boras.
Little surprising in that Braves are great 1yr deal specialists, but Profar should be able to get 3yrs in this pricey FA offseason not knowing the terms yet. More demand than supply for OF bats even if he’s a subpar defensive player.
That’s pretty scary if I’m Philly, looks like the Braves are going to reclaim that division. Harris II, Acuna Jr, Olsen, Ozuna, Profar? Then that pitching staff? They had about as bad a year as a team could have collectively and still made the playoffs. An upgrade of that significance with Acuna coming back pretty much locks up the NL East from where I’m standing.
As a braves fan, if we get a pitcher maybe we can talk about that.
And Albies, Riley and Murphy won’t be as bad as they were last season either. They never replaced Fried and Morton yet tho. Schwellenbach basically replaced Strider last year
The Phillies will pitch their way to 95 wins while the Braves will have to hit like 2023 to get there.
Unless the Phillies bullpen falls apart. If that happens though DUMBrowski will likely set fire to the farm to solve the problem and then exit after the season.
@heels on the field
I still think the Marlins got our teams beat bro.
In real life, the NL East will be won by the team that stays the healthiest overall, and avoids too many down years from established players. I won’t be surprised if any of the Braves / Mets / Phillies take the division as they are all very good teams in the non-Dodgers world.
Profar is one of those additions for the Braves that might work out, and might not if he regresses to the mean.
100% correct. Whoever stays healthiest will win that division. All 3 teams are loaded.
@OrioleOrange: Don’t forget about Austin Riley. Ozzie Albies and Sean Murphy are worth adding to your list too.
Also, come on Reds. Resume talks with WSox for a win-win Luis Robert trade.
If some team hires the staff at this site to run their team then the White Sox have a deal for Luis Robert.
No one else wants him.
I highly doubt nobody would want him. He’s coming off a down injury plagued year, but had one hell of a season the year prior. If he’s healthy he still has a lot of talent and can definitely get back to form, especially playing for another team not named the white sox!
Sure prospects in the 10-15 range. As long as none of the top 10 are included for the injury prone Robert
Good for Pro, happy for him to that finally landed a deal. Sad to see him go. Fun player to watch when it’s all clicking for him, and he’s a good clubhouse guy by all accounts.
Five tool player, if you include sh¡t talking as one of those tools.
What are the other four?
Hitting for average, hitting for power, playing left field, and chewin’ seeds?
Well, I will give you the last two, but do the hit and power tools count if they only show up about a third of the time in his career? ; )
It was a bad joke that has gone awry.
He’ll come in handy in PHI.
Yes, but if he somehow goes into the stands in left field at CBP, we might not give him back.
We’ll send in Arcia after him — don’t worry about giving him back.
He’s the second most aggressive baby Dr. Skull has ever seen.
It depends on the contract, of course, but this guy has been very inconsistent and very unhealthy in his career. I wouldn’t have touched him. But again depends on the contract.
He’s been pretty healthy as a Padre. Got whacked in the head with a knee and came back quickly.
Yeah, but fairly inconsistent production throughout the years.
The Mariners could swing the funniest trade ever.
That wouldn’t be very funny. For me or for zKelenic.
I’d find it hilarious as a Mariners fan. Do damn near nothing all winter long except sign some 37 year old “infielder” who may or may not be cooked once he sets foot in T-Mobile Park, grab some random AAA depth guys, then bring back Kelenic in a trade after all the dysfunctional BS him and Seattle went through for 3 years. At this point I don’t even care if the moves they make are good, I just want something to break up this monotonous winter.
Supposedly something Will happen once the Bregman situation gets finalized. He’s holding the rest of the third baseman market up.
My expectations are low, I think the best case scenario is they sign Moncada and hope he’s not totally washed up. Dipoto’s best work since the Mariners have been a contenderish team has usually happened around the trade deadline, so I think that’s their impact play once again.
Totally agree: they could be saving up the majority of money they have available for the trade deadline. Still would like them to pull a trade for some sort of infield asset who can hit. Not pulling for a Justin Turner redux.
I am honestly surprised he did not sign with the Padres. But good for him. He should do well in Atlanta.
Must be the new starting shortstop.
For a guy who has literally only played well with the Padres, this is a big risk for both sides. Wish him the best!
The alternative is Kelenic. You know full well what that means.
Kelenic on the bench now, or traded?
He’ll most likely be a starter (RF) until Acuna is back, then backup/late inning replacement. Time is running out for him. They may give Acuña an occasional day off since Ozuna will be DH.
Even with the Padres it was a 50/50 chance that he’s any good. Such a weird career.
Only right. All players from curacao must call atlanta home at some point
So funny thats a knee slapper. Dodgers don’t need any more janitors.
Does preller have another shortstop prospect to put in left field? Just need one more for a complete set
Better than what they had. Good move
4 years for $60M
Peter Seidler is pissed off looking down on the Padres right now. Hope he haunts his brothers.
3/42? Nvm, even Peter didn’t want to pay him that much.
3yrs/42million
thats alot for a 32 yr old who hasnt always been consistent with his production.
altho ATL seems to be very good with veteran OFs past their prime
What prime?
’24? A fleeting success? We wish JP well!
When you’ve been a Profar as long as Jurickson has, your production is bound to fluctuate. Solid pickup for the Braves!
Doyers fans get your shots in, you insufferable, self-satisfied egotists.
Like Padre fans weren’t running their mouths at dodger fans for the past 4 years
take it easy on the la deferrals
they havent signed a closer in over 24 hours
something must be wrong
We should be taking it easy on the Padres, 56 seasons and 0 World Series rings
Always been tough to be a doyer fan
Yawn
Pro put up a great year and this is his chance to get a good deal . Hope he does great in ATL.
Whelp, so much for me saying back to the Padres. Alex Verdugo come on down…
Sign Trouts you cowards!
– Braves Facebook replies
$42Million on Jurickson Profar ? Insanity. He’s had 1 good yr. What’s AA thinking ? Don’t bid on anyone then when u do, u severely overpay for fringe guy based on 1 season.
Welcome to the Mets fan world of bad contracts. I envy all the great contracts Atlanta has on their roster. Maybe AA figured he could roll the dice on Profar?
If he can repeat 2024 he would earn half his contract in 1 year. But I do agree that’s a little too much. 2 years 36 sounded more like it.
Asleep for Hoffman?
1 season? He was a 3-bWAR player in ’22 and 3.6 bWAR in ’24 at Petco. Yes, wildly inconsistent, but bring him in Truist in that lineup.
Yeah. Im not trying to be a hater but i just dont see it with Profar. Corner outfielder who’s been mediocre at best for most of his career.
He’s a ginormous upgrade over what the Braves, currently have, especially with Acuña missing the start of the season. And with the way money has been thrown around this offseason, $14 million is nothing. They were paying Morton )20 million
Always find it hilarious when comments either thinks it’s their money or they think it’s an overpayment when clearly 3 years $42 mil for a guy coming off an All-Star year is very reasonable. Sure, he has an injury history but if healthy it’s a huge upgrade from Kelenic, De La Cruz or Eli White. He has power, drives in runs and hits for average. Plus he gets on base at a reasonably high rate. I like the signing. Projection was for him to get 4 years $80 mil and you think paying half of that is too much ? You’re stuck in the 80’s-90’s salaries lol because in 2025 this is a good deal if he produces even 20 HR 75 RBI’s hits .270 with .340 OBP
@Sarm
You’re right, it will be a good deal if he puts up those numbers. He did well in 22 and 24, but not in 21 or 23. I guess 3/42 is the going rate for his potential production.
Profar has played 913 of his team’s 1002 games since the start of the 2018 season. That is 91% of the games. He is in top 20 in durability over the last 7 seasons. Profar is inconsistent, but he shows up and puts on the uniform damn near every game.
Now Shatkins can devote their full attention to signing Pete Alonso……or at least finish a strong second again.
Shatkins…lol.
Worst offseason ever.
Farewell, Jurickson. Keep trolling the Dodgers.
SD get ready for the Tirso Ornelas show.
Exactly what I’ve been saying
Is he good or bad?
He has done well in the minors but has no big league experience
He did well in aaa which in El Paso means nothing
Been watching him the past couple of years in AAA tear apart the Bees pitching and he looks really good at the plate. He hit .297 with .864 OPS last season but that was in PCL where that is just a 114 OPS+. Like most prospects you just never know. He is 24 and not a kid anymore. Looks like the Padres are going to see what he has.
18th ranked prospect in SD org and rated 40 overall, yikes. This isn’t an everyday OF solution.
exit velo leaped last year, rivaled in the org only by Tatis. We’ll see if he can lay off the MLB breaking balls just off the plate, he hasn’t seen that yet.
Kelenic getting trade or demoted?
Starter until Acuna is back, then backup/late inning replacement and possibly giving Acuna a breather to prevent 2022.
@Reynaldo: He’ll start until Acuna comes back. Probably the 4th of’er after that. Better outfield bench piece than they usually have.
Overpay
Lol okay pal
It’s hilarious the every offseason for the last 4-5 all we hear is “The Padres are winning the offseason” and “what the hell ism{teller doing” etc.
Now they don’t do anything yet and it’s “what are they doing?”
“Are they even trying to win”?
lol
seems to be end of the jarred kelenic experiment for braves
profar from curacao, probably braves andruw jones fan as kid..now teammate of ozzie..we have a plausible left fielder now maybe..go braves..thank you alex for some hot stove yummies..braves nation was getting hungry..still need a starting pitcher and some bullpen help..go braves
3/$42mm for plausible. What is teams with no OF prospects for $100 Alex?
Nice! Guy’s gonna cook in Hotlanta.
100% agree
Looking forward to him sucking and getting dumped in July, then signing with SD and turning into MVP candidate
Well, we got our wish. He will be starting in LF in San Diego on opening day. Just the wrong team.
Good one.
Way to get paid, JP!!!
Maybe he was peds!
Kelnic will see time for a month or so until Acuna returns but also the Braves control him for a few more years. With Ozuna becoming a free agent at the end of the year maybe they rotate the DH role next year and spend that money on pitching?
If ozuna has another year like the past two, the braves would be foolish not to bring him back. Yes he’s getting older, but his play has improved significantly, and he’s seemingly put his personal issues behind him. It’s always easy to replace a dh, but can you really say that about 40 hr 100 rbi type of dh, much less any player with that type of production?
The only way for the Reds to get a hitter to play a corner OF is the trade route. Profar would have been acceptable not perfect.
Wow. AA taking chances.
Profar has been worth 8.4 career WAR in 11 seasons. 3.6 of that was last season. He will be 32 next month. He was a top prospect coming up so the talent has always been there but he is a tough player to predict going forward.
Yay. I’m just happy they made a meaningful move. I’m sure I’ll be mad about this at some point, but it’s meaningful and it’s activity this offseason, so as of right now, I’m happy.
Good luck with that three year deal
Yep. Guess this is another example of the new price of doing business. Rather see the Braves get him on a 2 year deal—-if they really had to get him at all.
Tauchman had that beautiful obp and for last 2 years! 1.9m!!!!!
If Profar hits like last year it’s a absolute bargain. Give him 4 years. Seems like a fair bet.
Nice little bit of change for a player who looked like his career was on the verge of ending a few years ago.
But I don’t think anyone will be shocked if he only hits half of the homers he hit last season.
How can you write an article about Profar and the Braves without mentioning that Profar is from Curaçao and as we all know, by law the Braves are mandated to sign all the Curaçao born players in the league at least once!
Good pickup. Would have liked the Tigers to have signed him. I would not be surprised if Profar out-performs Bregman the next 3 years.
Call me crazy, but how are his defensive metrics at short? Can we move him back to the infield? Cause Arcia is so bat with his bat that it negates any value he brings with his glove. And I truly believe we can put Kelenic out in left and he bring more value than Arcia. And if not, you can find left fielders easily. They are everywhere. U can find an upgrade on free agency for cheap right now if we want now.
You are crazy. :p
Fair enough. I simply have no idea how good or bad he was at short and it’s been forever. I assume they moved him away from there for a reason. But gosh, Arcia is soo bad. One of the worst hitters in the league, literally statistically speaking
I was just trying to be funny and it fell flat. Sorry man.
Honestly I think the only time Profar has been good is in Lf in 2022 and 2024.
According to their beat writer Cassavell, Preller said yesterday that the Padres had moved on from Profar. They still won the poll and the Braves were far down the list.
Will the Braves cut him by the ASG like the Rockies did and then the Padres pick him up for the minimum again?
Yep they are going to throw away 30 40 million after only 3 and a half months.
@Dream: Lol. We need a sarcasm font on this site.
This does not feel like a classic AA scoop of an undervalued player. I hope their scouting saw something that warrants this deal.
The R squared of year-over-year EV90’s is incredibly high and he had a swing changed that suggested the plausibility of that change last year. I think that’s ~90% of the decision.
Don’t like the length or amount. But there’s no outfield depth in the minors either. Desperate signing.
Good get. Profar sh$ts me no end. Cocky antagonistic little f&cker…..that has been backing it up with performance. Opposition fan nightmare.
This is a quintessential Braves move.
Mistake, must have been pretty desperate.
Perfect signing. Now trade for Cease and take a couple fliers on some relievers that had down years with split contracts and they’ll be good to go. I know everybody wants a shortstop, and I’m sure the Braves do too, but world class shortstops don’t grow on trees. That will have to wait til next offseason.
Will be a great leadoff hitter until Acuña gets back. Profar, Albies, Riley, Olson, Ozuna, Harris, Murphy, Kelenic, Arcia. That’s an elite lineup, then when you substitute Acuña for Kelenic, it becomes one of the best, if not the best in the league.
Not even close to an elite lineup. 1/3 of that lineup is an automatic out. Profar could very well end up bombing and be useless hitter #4. Olson and Harris are pretty big question marks with what you’ll get as well.
They have 3 hitters to be confident about with Albies, Riley, and Ozuna
Neither Olson or Harris will be bad, so don’t misinterpret my words on them, but they might not be all that reliable either. I’d add Acuña in that category as well. As great as he’s shown consistency hasn’t been his strength.
Just being real. Even if everyone clicks though you still have 3 automatic outs in there.
Or trade for cease, and sign Kim so we can have all the padres former all stars!!
@ Gabe
If you are a starting SS on a MLB team, that is a world class SS.
Well, definitely didn’t see that one coming. I had him blinking and getting a two-year deal with the Padres. Ornelas might be the Jackson Merrill of this season, hope Padres fans get another breakout rookie!
Great. Now he can assault the Nationals in even more games.
RIP Jackson Profile
But Padres fans said he would never leave SD!!!!!!!!
The 200 IQ move would be to wait for him to tank with the Braves, wait for thek to release him and then bring him back for the league minimum.
Preller asleep at the wheel
Well that was not on my bingo card. Missed the AJ Cassavell article saying the Padres were out on Profar or I would not have voted for them to sign him. Guessing almost everyone else missed it, too.
Holy overpay, Batman.
props for using “probably” 3 times in 1 sentence
I love this website, but sometimes I want to take a red pen to their articles.
Writer could probably at least attempt to probably keep AI from taking his job…probably.
New circus for the clown
Pack the small glove——- just in case. Go Braves!!
By June, the Braves are going to deeply regret this contract.
Prediction: Released in August and resigned by the Padres.
Buh-bye.
That is the hope.
I know that Padres guy always complains and me and others give him crap for it but they must be pressed for current cash to let Profar out the door. Just seemed like he was a perfect fit there. Padres Jurickson Profar is an elite player. On other teams he’s at best average. We’ll see how it goes. I think he’s figured things out now.
They are really pressed.
They are Prellered.
The Padres made him an offer. $24 million over 2 years. The Braves nearly doubled it over 3 years. Where would you sign?
The Padres know Profar. If they were not willing to go $14 million AAV, I trust their judgement. They weren’t willing to give him more than the $7.75 million the Rockies paid him in 2023 and it was the right decision. The Padres paid him $1 million in 2024.
I wanted Roki, but man this is devastating. For as much as he bounced around the league, he felt homegrown to me in SD. Good luck JP 🙁
Profar in even seasons: 9.8 WAR
in odd seasons: -1.4 WAR
(career)
@joepanikatthedisco —
He’s the even Olson.
Olson in even seasons: 11.9 bWAR in 4 seasons (2.97 WAR average)
Olson in odd seasons: 21 bWAR in 4 seasons (5.25 WAR average)
Quick, Atlanta, call 911. Somebody be trippin
Good for Profar. He got the bag. A lot of dough for a 1.2 WAR guy.
I wish the good players from the past could have experience modern free agency. Al Oliver, George Foster, Carlton Fisk, etc. man they would be rolling in the stacks.
1.2 WAR? Who says?
That is his career average per 162 games. baseball-reference.com/players/p/profaju01.shtml
He was a 1.5 WAR average player for the Padres
A perfectly cromulent salary AAV and contract length for a veteran with yo yo career numbers who gets to capitalize on a very good season, potbelly his last best chance at this kind of deal- and the overall deal value is modest enough that if it doesn’t work out, the Braves have other options and can pivot without Profar’s salaries being prohibitive.
Good deal for both team and player.
This is how it’s done. The Braves are the model of fair salaries and contract lengths.
Your predictive text said potbelly instead of probably. You must have one of those wife’s that seen a baby pig in a short and wants one so you looked it up lol.
So LF is now a battle between Ornelas and Lockridge loser gets 4th OF
Back up catcher is Maldanado vs Sullivan
And we may convert Morejon and Hoeing back to starters which could ruin both as it has others in the past
And they’re still over the tax line so any QO from Suarez King Cease Arraez nets them extra 4ths not 1sts.
And guess Wade vs Rosario for 2B.
Well. Alright.
Before this contract is over, I could see Profar underperforming, being waived by the Braves and once again a Padre.
All we need now is Flaherty , and a reliever who can pass a physical.
This is excellent news.
It trips me out that a very average player over his career can get a decent contract after one good year (fluke?) Well, Profar actually had a decent 2022 also, but he had to settle for a one year deal with the Rockies where he was a below average player. Braves will regret this
It is a good time for the Padres to trade Dylan Cease (RP-S) and Luis Arraez (1B) to the Minnesota Twins for Christian Vasquez (C), Willi Castro (All-Star Utility) Infield/Outfield switch hitter) and Chris Paddock. (RP-S) The Friars already have Jake Cronenworth to place 1B for the next several years. The Friars would be sending $27,.750 million in salary with absorbing $23.9 million in salary, saving the Friars $3.85 million in salary cap and adding 3 players that will improve the Friars on the field product. The Twins on a very tight budget, would solve their problem at first base while slightly upgrading their rotation.
This is a terrible deal for the padres.
Cease and Arraez
For
Paddock, Castro and Vasquez…saving a whole 3m.
You can’t be serious with this trade idea. This isn’t even remotely close.
I’d want more than those 3 for Cease and Arraez if I were San Diego. While Vasquez, Castro and Paddock fill needs, they don’t compare to what they’d be giving up. Minnesota doesn’t have the cash to send because both teams are trying to find ways to create more of it.
Seems like a “well we had to do something” signing. Terrible defense and coming off a career year at age 31. But not a huge investment like so many signings these days.
I think AA does a good job, but I don’t see how this works out. Profar is almost never any good. In the equivalent of 6-7 seasons, he has 8.4 bWAR, and 6.6 of that was basically in contract years. Plus he is 32.
It feels like there had to be a lot of teams interested that the Braves had to go to 3 years. I thought he would get 1 year guaranteed with vesting options/something like a buyout on an option and of course I assumed the Padres were going to be the ones to give it to him.
I was thinking he’d be a great depth piece on the bench for the Yankees and an insurance policy on Dominguez but at 3 years I understand them not being in on it.
It feels like for the Braves it’s a lot to commit…
I would like to see the Braves do a flyer on Scherzer for 1 yr deal
So who’s the best of the rest, Grichuk?
Will the real Jurkison Profar please stand up.
Braves have needed another outfielder for a while. Especially with Acuna being more of a question mark. 3 years is a risk for this guy but if he can produce even half of what he did last year, he’ll be a much better 3rd outfielder than they’ve had in years.
