The Yankees are interested in signing Thairo Estrada, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports (X link). New York is now the second team known to be in on Estrada’s market, as the Rockies were also linked to the veteran earlier this week.
There’s plenty of familiarity between the two sides, as Estrada was an international signing for the Yankees back in 2012 and he appeared in 61 games for New York during his first two Major League seasons (2019-20). It wasn’t until after the Yankees traded Estrada to the Giants in April 2021 that the infielder broke out as a productive big leaguer, hitting .266/.320/.416 over 1203 plate appearances for San Francisco during the 2021-23 seasons.
Estrada’s performance dropped off badly last season, however, and the Giants outrighted him off their 40-man roster at the end of August after Estrada batted only .217/.247/.343 in 381 PA. Wrist problems plagued Estrada for much of the summer, further hampering an offensive approach that has never led to much hard contact. Estrada has also been limited in his capacity to get on base, and his 2.6% walk rate in 2024 was the second-lowest of any player in baseball with at least 350 PA.
In the wake of this down year, Estrada surely isn’t being viewed as a starting candidate in the Bronx, though his versatility makes him an interesting candidate for a part-time or bench role. The large majority of Estrada’s MLB playing time has come at second base, but he has seen a decent amount of time as a shortstop while also chipping in as a third baseman and corner outfielder. Estrada’s career splits are pretty even, yet on paper, his right-handed bat could complement the left-handed hitting Jazz Chisholm Jr., who is expected to hold down the starting role at either second or third base.
Chisholm and shortstop Anthony Volpe have two of the starting infield jobs spoken for, and Chisholm’s versatility gives New York some flexibility in deciding how to address second or third base. Conceivably, the Yankees could add Estrada to their in-house collection of DJ LeMahieu, Oswaldo Cabrera, and Oswald Peraza and let that whole group serve as something of a rotating bench/platoon mix while rotating Chisholm between the keystone and the hot corner. Or, the Bronx Bombers could go bigger with more of an everyday infield option, though those endeavors are probably on hold until the Yankees learn whether or not Juan Soto will be returning to the team.
Yankee Clipper
No surprise. Another IFer the Yankees traded (for cash considerations) and got nothing of value back.
Lindor's Bodyguard
Because he’s not worth anything in trade. I mean, he was dropped by SF.
Yankee Clipper
After three seasons though, and likely because of that wrist injury. He was productive during those three seasons, much more than the Yankees IFers.
Perksy
Clip, I’d like them to maybe sign one of the Kim’s for the infield. Elite defense. Depending on if they want a right or left handed batter.
Yankee Clipper
I could see that. Seems like it’d be a good investment for either Kim.
KnicksFanCavsFan
@Yankee
He had a .460 OPS and assisted in a small amount of games that year. Maybe they had more value prospects that needed to be added to the 40-man roster. Nothing to get upset about.
Yankee Clipper
Yeah, Knicks, I’m not upset they got rid of him. It’s more about trying to acquire him again, and too late. If it’s a minor league thing, I don’t care.
Soto announcement coming today or tomorrow though!
DR2020
more dumpster diving clipper, already.
dasit
never understood that “trade.”
for people who remember river avenue blues there was “the summer of thairo”
BaseballClassic1985
So much for the Yankees believing Caleb Durbin is a “stud.”
Damn Yankee$
Believing he’s a stud and finding out halfway through the year that he’s not is a risk the Yankees aren’t in a position to take considering Cole and Judge have about four years of their prime left. Estrada, who shouldn’t have been traded away to begin with imo, would be a solid plug and play at second.
TheTrotsky
We’d be lucky if they have four years left.
BaseballClassic1985
Then they should trade him while he has value. But Cashman won’t, he’ll jerk the guy around for 5 years until he has zero trade value, much like he did with multiple prospects. Estrada doesn’t make the team better.
TheTrotsky
Trade who?
BaseballClassic1985
Durbin
KnicksFanCavsFan
@Baseball
Jerk him around? You mean like they have Cortez, Schmidt, Gil, Volpe, Wells, Cabrera, and as it seems, Dominguez. For all the talk of them being FA head- hunters, they’ve done a good job of blending in prospects (those mentioned) and using the farm to acquire key players (Soto, Jazz, Holmes).
dasit
yeah it’s funny the yankees have done a good job developing their own starters but stink at evaluating staters from other teams (grey/montes/rodon)
rocky7
The Yankees could definitely afford to “find out if Durbin a stud” for half a year given the plethora of seemingly light hitting glove first versatile infielders they have….Peraza, Cabrera, and others at the AAA level…..if they did indeed find out at the All Star break that Durbin wasn’t a “guy”, there are always lots of infielders available for a bag of balls that can play second base adequately given a strong infield that would include upgrades at 3rd and 1st…..the Yankees always seem to admire players that can play more than 1 position that are coming off their worst years…..like Estrada…..play your own kids and save the money….
Lindor's Bodyguard
Volpe too. Light hitting.
BaseballClassic1985
rocky7 – From watching some video on Durbin, he looks legit. Not saying he’s the second coming of Joe Morgan, but he makes contact, doesn’t strike out a lot, plays defense and has speed. Yanks could use a scrappy player like that.
I also tend to believe the Yankees think of him as a legitimate prospect because you never hear him talked about by NY sportswriters when discussing trades. Yankees usually have the names of the “prospects” they want to trade pushed out to the public, something I haven’t seen with Durbin.
Time will tell, but Cashman doesn’t usually give rookies much of a leash. If they don’t perform well right out of the box, they’re banished to the Scranton shuttle.
KnicksFanCavsFan
@Baseball
I hate to be so disagreeable with you, but Cash had a long leash on Volpre and a Cabrera. Volpre of course was a GG guy but his bat regressed this year.
BaseballClassic1985
@Knicks – I don’t mind disagreeable, as long as I’m not being attacked. Everybody has different opinions, even about teams they root for.
For example, I have never liked Volpe at SS. Yes, I know he won a GG last year, but he doesn’t have a true SS arm and he often takes awkward angles to grounders, See Gm 5 of the WS, 5th inning. He does have soft hands and excellent range. I think his optimal position is 2nd. Many – including management – disagree. I get it.
I don’t agree that he regressed with the bat this year. I still believe he’s going to keep getting better. He’s not going to be a HOF player, but I see him becoming a better than league avg SS. He played well in the playoffs. Time will tell.
rocky7
Agreed man……if in fact they sign Soto, they’ll be looking for cost efficiency in their lineup given their needs to fill 3rd, 1st, relief, and a starter……..we both say give Durbin a chance to prove he isn’t a guy……
bwmiller79
The Yankees are going to lose the Soto Sweeps and they are going to stink again, Stanton will be back to swinging through pitches, they let Torres walk, will end up overpaying Bregman and/or Pete Alonso.
bwmiller79
Meanwhile, Andres Chapparo is going to find his way into the Nationals infield mix this season and hit bombs all over Washington DC.
BaseballClassic1985
I’m hoping they lose the Soto sweepstakes, but if the money is close, he’ll be back with the Yankees. I believe that’s who Soto really wants to play for.
bwmiller79
Honestly, I hope they sign Soto because I’d like to see Pete Alonso back with the Mets. Their lineup is looking rather soft without Torres and Soto, and to a lessor extent Anthony Rizzo.
BaseballClassic1985
Yanks will sign/trade for other bats if Soto doesn’t return. Torres is replaceable and Rizzo was basically a black hole last year.
I think Alonso goes back to the Mets even if they sign Soto.
rocky7
So in our world, “stink again” applies to a team that annually makes the playoffs and last year made the WS…albeit losing but still made it…….We’ll see with Soto, Torres has a $.10 cent baseball head,…Stanton does swing through a lot of pitches and gets hurt but oh man…when he makes contact……don’t think Bregman will ever be a Yankee given his Astro past, and don’t think the Yankees are going back to the Giambi days with Alonso with power but deficient 1st base skills…….
bwmiller79
The Yankees miss out on Soto they will be courting Bregman like howler monkeys.
KnicksFanCavsFan
@Baseball
I seri doubt the Yanks are looking at him as the starting 2b. It even says it in the article. Bench player or maybe even a minor league depth deal. Maybe they plan on using Cabrera or Perazza in a deal and just want to have depth in the minors? I mean he was out-righted so it’s not like he’s held a lock on a major league job. This is likely an organizational depth move, at best.
BaseballClassic1985
I sure hope not
Badfinger
His OBP was .247 last year. Pass.
imissjoebuzas
A 2.6% walk rate…. Pass
Lindor's Bodyguard
And no power.
seamaholic 2
He had a wrist injury. He can hit a little.
Doron
this makes no sense.
The Yankees have pre-arb utility infielders that are former top prospects, and Caleb Durbin.
I will believe it when I see it.
YankeesBleacherCreature
They want guys like Durbin and Peraza to keep getting game action in the minors as opposed to rotting on the bench. I wouldn’t be surprised if Dominguez starts in AAA if he doesn’t have a strong S.T. showing. Judge didn’t play full-time until he was 25.
Old York
Yankees are dumpster diving.
Joe says...
If they sign Soto at anything near what’s being reported, this will be the norm.
rocky7
Yes, that’s what every Yankee fan is worried about…..they’ll be signing every cast off in a down year hoping they can get coached up to an average MLB player level…..
Old York
@Joe says…
Blaming Soto’s potential contract for the Yankees’ bargain-bin shopping spree is a cop-out. This ‘norm’ has been brewing long before Soto was in pinstripes, thanks to questionable roster management and a front office addicted to half-measures. Estrada isn’t a budget choice because of Soto—it’s because the Yankees’ spending priorities are perpetually out of sync with building a championship-caliber team.
Joe says...
I fully agree Old York but throwing in the neighborhood of $50 million per year at one player will definitely keep them from going big anywhere else.
DR2020
damn right Joe, they’re already beginning the dumpster diving.
BronxBombers23
He was pretty good in 22 and 23. It seems like he played hurt last saison. He’s a good fielder and fast. If he’s cheap, why not??? Would be a good signing.
jopeness
he was a good farmhand saison.
probably a fail, but I tried
DerekBellsMoistMoustache
Feel bad for Yankees fans. One of the richest franchises in baseball acting like they don’t have money to spend. Hope he works out for them.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Still more than three months before players report to ST. Don’t feel bad for us.
seamaholic 2
Offering $700m to Soto is “acting like they don’t have money to spend”?
DerekBellsMoistMoustache
It is when they know he isn’t going to take it
YankeesBleacherCreature
And you know that how?
DerekBellsMoistMoustache
lol
Salzilla
I like Thairo, and if healthy, he can be productive, but I wouldn’t sign him to start (not without a bounce back first), and if you aren’t signing him as a starter, do we really need him?
(That sentence had legs!)
DR2020
easy, answer no.
Lindor's Bodyguard
When will the Yankees DFA DJLM?
Frankie Bani
Yankee will lose everybody waiting for Soto
oldgfan
Ya. Estrada is a great fallback, plan B ?
DanUgglasRing
If Estrada is healthy he can be a good ball player. Giants fans adored him and a lot of people felt like Farhan pulled the rug out from under him when he got hurt and Farhan was pushing buttons to try to save his job.
DrDick
As a 50 year Yankee fan… F NO!
HalosHeavenJJ
Estrada is better than people think. Good glove, plenty of contact.
His bat looked slow last year. Almost certainly due to injury. So pitchers went right after him and all his numbers cratered.
If back to health, he’s a good bench or stopgap piece. Maybe give Durbin a month or 2 in AA then turn Estrada into a utility guy.
mlbnyyfan
IMO I think the Yankees should bring back Ushela or sign Rosario. Estrada a nice depth piece if Yankees can unload DJL
Michael K. Igawa
Tough ballplayer. I believe he spent some time on the IL with a gunshot wound.
davemlaw
Thairo is a solid player when healthy. He hasn’t been right since he broke his forearm on an inside pitch in 2023.
Taking a flier on a guy like this, who’s still under 30, is a smart value play. He can also play shortstop in a pinch or the OF, he’s got some speed and can hit you some homers too. He would be a nice fit in Colorado or the White Sox.
yankeemanuno23
Why? Stupid to spend $ or bring on these B rated at best (“older”) players, hoping for getting 1 good season again. Lo siento Thairo compa/pana, pero apunta pa’ otro lado!
Sorinotsori
A worthy flyer if the price reflects the risk that’s he is now who he was last year and not before.
coocoo20
Yankees just need to sign players who can get on base in front of Soto judge Stanton and hopefully wells
MLBTR needs to hire editors
There shouldn’t be a comma before “or.”
