As reported by John Denton, Mark Feinsand, and Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, the Tigers and Guardians have both expressed interest in trading for Cardinals starting pitchers Erick Fedde and Steven Matz. Both pitchers seemed to be likely trade candidates entering the offseason, but this is the first report to link either pitcher to specific suitors.
As the Cardinals look to shed payroll and kickstart a retooling effort, just about all of their veteran players look like possible trade chips. Nolan Arenado has generated much of the buzz so far, but his contract isn’t the only one St. Louis could look to offload. After Arenado, the next highest-paid players on the roster are Sonny Gray, Miles Mikolas, and Willson Contreras. However, all three have no-trade clauses in their contracts, and all three have expressed a desire to stay in St. Louis. Thus, Matz and Fedde could be the next players who president of baseball operations John Mozeliak looks to flip. Those trades wouldn’t come with quite as much salary relief – Matz will make $12.5MM and Fedde will make $7.5MM in 2025 – but they might be easier to pull off. Not only is less money involved, but neither Matz nor Fedde has the right to reject a trade.
Any trade involving Matz would likely be a salary dump. In other words, the Cardinals should not expect to get any notable players back in return. As he enters his age-34 campaign, Matz is coming off one of the worst seasons of his career. In 12 games (seven starts), he pitched to a 5.08 ERA and 4.63 SIERA. His strikeout-to-walk ratio was the lowest it’s ever been. To make matters worse, he missed four months of the year nursing a lower back strain.
While Matz has been a productive starting pitcher in the not-so-distant past, he has struggled with injuries and inconsistency throughout his career. He has spent time on the IL in every season since his rookie year and has never thrown enough innings to qualify for the ERA title. His 3.86 ERA and 4.19 SIERA over 105 innings in 2023 are a reminder that he can be a valuable contributor to a big league rotation. Yet, as Matz enters his mid-thirties, concerns about his durability and potential decline will only increase. All that to say, his $12.5MM salary is probably more than he could command on the open market. If the Cardinals want another team to take on that salary, they won’t be able to ask for much in return.
As for Fedde, the Cardinals wouldn’t get as much salary relief in a trade, but they could bring back some talent to help in 2025 and beyond. Although Fedde has had injury and inconsistency problems of his own, he is two years younger than Matz and coming off of two consecutive strong seasons. He also comes $5MM cheaper.
Fedde was little more than an innings eater for the Nationals from 2017-22. However, he reinvented himself in the KBO in 2023, winning the MVP Award and signing a two-year, $15MM deal with the White Sox last winter. While he wasn’t an MVP-caliber player in 2024, he produced what was easily the best season of his MLB career, pitching 177 1/3 innings with a 3.30 ERA and 4.19 SIERA. He didn’t excel in any one area, but he limited walks and hard contact at better-than-average rates and tossed at least five innings in 27 of his 31 starts. If he repeats that performance in 2025, he’d be an upgrade for just about every contending team’s starting rotation.
As far as contending teams go, Cleveland and Detroit have two of the weaker rotations. With Shane Bieber still recovering from Tommy John surgery, the Guardians only have three locks for the rotation: Tanner Bibee, Gavin Williams, and Ben Lively. The Tigers are in a similar position with several question marks after Tarik Skubal, Reese Olson, and Alex Cobb. With that said, it’s still surprising to see these two teams linked to Fedde and Matz. Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reported during the Winter Meetings that the Tigers were not “planning to pursue additional starting pitchers” after signing Cobb. He quotes general manager Jeff Greenberg, who said “I think we’re probably done for now.”
As for the Guardians, it’s a question of money as usual. It’s especially rare to see this team spend significant money on pitching because they have done such a good job of developing talented arms internally. Thus, Matz, in particular, seems to be an unexpected target; he would become the highest-paid pitcher on the roster. However, a deal with Cleveland could make more sense if St. Louis is willing to eat some salary to receive a more talented return package.

Going the ATL Brave route. Developed and extend early!
Side note: I forgot Matz played for the Cardinals. lol
BITA
This site predicted 7 Cardinals would be traded in their top 35 trade candidates list.
Remind me again how many have been dealt?
……..
thebirds
Five. Willie McGee, Kip Wells, John Pagnozzi, Roger Hornsby, and Gary Gaetti.
BITA
Kip Wells lol. That dude owes me money!

I think he owes everyone money. That’s why he is MIA

Did you mean Tom Pagnozzi?

No his twin brother John. Lol

@ BITA
Remind me again, did pitchers and catchers report yesterday, or today?
A lot of teams were probably waiting on certain free agents and haven’t gotten into the trade market until recently. Also, they did trade Arenado, he simply blocked it. Not sure all 7 will get traded, but I’d guess at least 3 or 4 will.
BITA
Like I said at the time Arenado will probably get dealt. But all those other guys? I wouldn’t bet on it.
Nuggethoarder
The site did not predict seven Cardinals would be traded. They listed seven Cardinals in their top 35 players most likely to be traded. They stated that they knew the entire list would not be traded.
MLBTR was wrong about the Cardinals overall intentions. But stop saying they predicted seven Cardinals would be traded. They did not do that.
BITA
They had a list of most likely to be traded and it was 20% full of Cardinals. Any Cubs on the list? I don’t think there was.
GarryHarris
Neither Erick Fedde nor Steven Matz are good enough to be a SP in Detroit. The Tigers already have a failed reclamation project in Kenta Maeda. They don’t need the extra wasted roster space that could be used for others who have a chance to make the rotation.
GarryHarris
Who are the 7?
17dizzy
It’s unreal that the Cardinals are having to dump all of their best players because the DeWitts can’t afford to Own a Professional Baseball Team!!!!!!
BITA
They aren’t doing that you are just being dramatic.

I wish I was just being dramatic.
You better do your homework on the DeWitts. Not good.

I weep for America’s future. They are trading to rebuild, and balance the roster. Not to save money.

Cleveland is really good at judging pitching talent, but is it just me or hasn’t Matz struggled since his early Mets days?
GO1962
Matz can be an effective and valuable pitcher when healthy. And that has been the problem while he has been with the Cardinals, he has spent more time on the injured list than on the active roster.
17dizzy
Matz did turn out to be a decent reliever last season. Even had a couple of good starts late in the season.
Whyme
He had a decent year in Toronto. That’s how he got the deal he got with the Cards

PTSD from his days in the Bronx. Boston isn’t any easier and it’s probably not coincidental that the 3 teams he’s played for since leaving the Yankees have been Midwest teams
asdfgh
He’s already said he won’t waive the no trade clause that’s why dumb dumb. He likes being close to his home in Nashville and likes the idea of being a mentor to the young pitchers and possibly a chance at youth movement doing well like other franchises
1999 MLB All Star MVP
I agree. It would be a dumb trade for Boston because Gray sounds like he’s too weak to play for an AL East team again. That’s why it’s called MLB Trade Rumors. Lol
YaGottaBelieveAgain
There are different stories but I believe S. Gray’s lack of success in NYY – was more – because they tried to mess with his pitching strategy – what to throw and when vs some kind of Ed Whitson symptoms
Hard headed NYY analytics and pitching coach “We know better” while Gray had great results in OAK which I realize is less pressure
Rsox
Could be true because upon arriving in Cincinnati his numbers got back to Oakland levels or better

I doubt that. Most professional athletes play because they love to compete and love to win.

And the rest of the StL.
Maybe BOS can work out a trade with a team desperate for offense if they include a decent amount of money. SEA, CLE, LAA and others. Most say he is below average defensively as an OF. He should be able to play there some plus DH mostly
gbs42
1999,
What would the Cardinals even consider this? They’re not so desperate to cut payroll that they’d give up a really good pitcher for a mediocre DH.
1999 MLB All Star MVP
What about Yoshida and Abreu for Gray?
stlcardsblues
Gray and Contreras already told the Cardinals they don’t want to move and would veto a trade.
1999 MLB All Star MVP
Lol. And you believe that. Gray and Contreras are most likely using that as leverage for negotiations.
CardsFan57
The Fedde is a very reasonable contract. The Cardinals should keep him. Anyone who wants Matz is welcome to him. Take Mikolas too while you’re at it.
dankyank
A reasonable contract allows the Cardinals to ask for a higher return. Holding onto him and Helsley because they are affordable makes no sense since the team is outside their window of contention. Their farm system is also below average so trading both should be a no-brainer.
Instead, all reports are suggest Mozeliak is in denial about the state of the team and the roster he’s constructed. He is unwilling to make the obvious choice of restocking since it would be effectively admitting defeat. Rather, he’ll set the team up to lose both players without compensation. This will only handicap Bloom further, a GM that already displayed poor judgement when assembling a roster on a limited budget in Boston (I applaud him for rebuilding the farm). This doesn’t look like a situation with a happy ending to me…
baseballpun
They aren’t necessarily outside the window of playoff contention this year if they keep those guys. The division sucks. They won 83 games last year without getting any production out of 1B and with a geriatric rotation.
dankyank
Their run differential was negative and the rotation replacements are no guarantee to give better production than Gibson and Lynn, who were league average #5 starters. Cincinnati had horrible luck with their youngsters last year, Chicago is arguably a playoff team with an improved bullpen alone and the Brewers seemingly find a way into the playoffs every season. Hell, even Pittsburgh can count on another season of development from their youngsters.
There’s very little going in St. Louis’ favor right now. It’ll be a struggle just to get fourth place in the division.
asdfgh
Actually we have a lot of youthful pitchers who would relish the chance. McGreevey had a great showing last year as well as others and can get some prospects while opening more room for youth pitchers
baseballpun
The kids could pitch well and they could win 90 games or they could suck and lose 90 games. But if you trade Fedde and Helsley (and Gray, though I guess that’s off the table) and run out a rotation of Mikolas and four rookies it’s a guaranteed last place team.
As a fan, I’d rather roll the dice. I have no interest in tanking.
dankyank
Young players often struggle. While acknowledging that they have a large pile of young SPs, expecting them to step into the rotation without a hitch isn’t realistic. If they’re going to let the rotation sink or swim, then they might as well lean into the rebuild fully and trade Helsley and Fedde before they walk without compensation.
baseballpun
Nope. Rather see how they do and trade at the deadline if it goes south. Not interested in punting on the whole season.
gbs42
Cubs picking up Kyle Tucker is a huge improvement.
asdfgh
You run the risk of injuries than and we know Halsey, Matz are injury prone. Would rather get more value for a whole year of service and get the maximum return. I am all about the youth movement as the veterans didn’t pan out much. Remember what helped us a lot besides trades for recent WS war the pipeline of youth stepping in positional and pitchers. Let’s see what we got and can build off of. Marmol was a minors coach too and think we could do well without having to bench them often
baseballpun
And maybe pitchers on contending teams will get hurt and raise the demand for Fedde/Helsley. Roll the dice.
YaGottaBelieveAgain
If StL is stuck with Matz maybe try keeping him in the BP, he has talent but is so inconsistent. He was that way while on NYM
MLB Top 100 Commenter

Definitely agree that Cardinals should sell high on Helsley. But only if they get a massive return.

Just won 2 tix for 5 weekend games for answering a question on the local rock station. Busch is going to be empty in 2025 especially if they gut this team. if they gut the team.

Why? No future for him. Sonny is staying. Trade him for parts.
Devlsh
Sell high, buy low. Trade Fedde now, and hope Matz is motivated in his walk season to stay healthy and be successful. Then sell him at the deadline, either as a viable starter or decent LH reliever.
baseballpun
Keep Fedde, trade Matz
spudchukar
Move Fedde too. Yes he is cheap, which means he should bring a good return.

Harris isn’t the GM bud
Michael Chaney
It’s not really a surprise that the Guardians would take on a little bit of money for a starting pitcher if you’ve paid attention to their offseason.
It’s not like they’ll be in on the bidding for Corbin Burnes, but they just shed almost $100 in future salary from dealing Giménez.
Michael Chaney
*$100 million but the point still stands
dankyank
Cleveland made a very savvy move that simultaneously shed salary and upgraded their rotation. Plus, they have a large pile of young, glove first middle infielders so any dropoff will be quite modest. Kudos to their front office for using a positional surplus to shore up other areas of needed.
westcasey
pretending Cleveland would trade for Fedde, who would they offer back to St. Louis ?
BITA
Velasquez perhaps? Seems like a guy Cleveland could do without and the Cardinals could use.

uh, prospects? it won’t be the Eiffel Tower…

Has he found a trade partner for ERod yet?
Motor City Beach Bum
Stop living in the past dude. The Flaherty trade was good and they made the playoffs last year and hopefully next year is even better.
Rothbard
ERod pulled the rug out at the last minute. Hardly Harris’ fault.
That being said, I’m really disappointed that he missed the boat on Goldsmidt. I hope Harris adds one more veteran arm; like Lynn, Verlander, or Scherzer. Also, I don’t know if Arenado would play for Detroit, but it would be nice to rotate him at 1B, 3B, and DH.
Motor City Beach Bum
I’d rather see them go get Kim and Yandy Diaz fir 3B/SS and 1B. Getting both would cost the same as Arenado or Bregman and either one is better than the current version of Arenado. I would over to see Verlander back for the end of his career!
brodie-bruce
What would be kool is verlander went back to det and then won the ws, not even a det fan but still would love to see it.
Motor City Beach Bum
That would be a story book ending to a Hall of Fame career!
brodie-bruce
It would and glad one of my predictions came true, when I first saw him pitch in the 06 ws I went that kid is going to be special.
Rothbard
Kim’s injury makes him a no-go in my book. He might be limited to 2B when he comes back and I think Keith is our future there. Yandy Diaz is intriguing but I prefer having Arenado’s extreme work ethic in the club house with the youngsters.
Motor City Beach Bum
If Kim’s injury limits him to 2B then I agree with you, since the already have a surplus of 2B types. Yandy’s hitting and ability to get in base is what sells me. Cheers dude.
Rsox
Fedde to Cleveland and Matz to Detroit would be my guess.
Matz hasn’t had a healthy season since ’21, which coincidentally was his last season before free agency so maybe whoever gets him lucks out and he stays healthy playing for his next contract
Motor City Beach Bum
I’d rather the Tigers shoot for ex-Card Flaherty but Fedde had a nice year. Having said that I believe they looked pretty hard at bringing Matz in before he signed with St Louis so maybe Chris Fetter sees something he likes. Matz doesn’t look like an upgrade over anyone already there though, except Maeda.
Motor City Beach Bum
Crossing my fingers!
Jm207* 2
Tigers are my team. But they’ve done nothing to show they’re willing to spend any real money since Baez and Erod, and Scott Harris wasn’t the POBO then. It seems that ownership or the front office is content in crossing their fingers and putting all their eggs in the prospect basket. It’s unfortunate because a couple big moves for Vets to reinforce this team and welcome the next big wave of prospects could have made a huge difference.
warnbeeb
I think this article shortchanges the benefit Jackson Jobe is going to bring to the Tiger’s rotation. He will be in ROY mix in ’25. Skubal, Olsen, Cobb and Jobe is a solid front 4. I’d take Fedde. I’m not big on Matz. Even so, surely, the Tigers can find a 5th arm out of Mize, Montero., Manning and Madden.
Motor City Beach Bum
Still lots of time to add a bat. Bregman’s options are narrowing. If they’ve anticipated to add a 1B capable bat that market is shrinking too, although I wonder if that might make Alonso more open to a shorter deal. It would be great if the Tigers grabbed Yandy Diaz.
YaGottaBelieveAgain
Just an instinct but I think whoever signs Flaherty will regret it.
I think he’s about to turn back into a pumpkin so to speak.
Buyer Beware.
What do former teammates say about him?
cards1994
So we get rid of Edman to rent Feede for half a year and give up. Why is Mo still getting to pull strings if we know he’s gone
GO1962
MO is still there because he is under contract through the 2025 season and Bill DeWitt wants him to finish out the contract. DeWitt also said during a press conference that he wants Bloom to focus on making changes to the minor league development system for 2025 prior to taking over as club President.
jmaa
MO’s job the last 6 yrs has been to dismantle an era. He has done an excellent job. Dewit Deuce has lost his fastball and Dewit III is a trust fund deuche.
Motor City Beach Bum
It should be a 3 team race between them, KC and Cleveland. Things seem to have gone sideways for Minnesota but on paper they are still in it as well. It will be a hard road for the Tigers if they don’t splurge on a big bat and another starter though.
warnbeeb
To be sure, the Tigers need some offense. I’m not so sure Tork isn’t going to surprise….to the upside. Jung did not impress in his short stint. I’m concerned about 3B. I think Sweeney is also going to be a bona fide ML bat. Baez will be relegated to platoon and late inning D. If Meadows and Carpenter can play a whole season like they did the 2nd half last year, with Greene also progressing the Tigers can be right there. Colt Keith will be better, if not, at least, solid and reliable. Hinch is the best manager at handling a relief corp as there is in MLB. The Tigers have tons of relief options. Lot’s of arms there.
The Tigers have some farm depth too. I’m optimistic as long as they stay “reasonably” healthy.
spudchukar
I have no idea how good the Cards will be in 2025. But at least it will be a year of evaluation. Of course Gorman and Walker are the big ifs. I have my doubts. Neither are good at defense, so they have to hit. And not just a little bit. Significant contributions. Even Chase Davis may get a look. But the Cards defense is going to be ugly at times. I feel for Donovan and Winn. Good up the middle, but pretty bad at the corners. Plus, Herrera needs some defensive improvements. He can hit but Pages is a much better defender. Burleson is not a poor outfielder. Graceful he isn’t but he makes most plays. I guess Walker will man left, but his arm is an asset, the only one on defense, so maybe he goes to right. So what happens to Nootbar? Center? Does Scott get a shot? Sagesse? Third? And platoon with Gorman? DH? Lots to figure out. Only young player I have faith in is Quinn Mathews. The Cards do have an ace in waiting. And maybe McGreevy. Mikolas will probably stay, although he is an innings eater, but to move him Cards would have to eat a lot of salary, probably not worth it. Palante will be fine. Gray is still a decent ace. Lots of Ks. Hence maybe, but maybe the pen. Set up for the closer. ???
baseballpun
I’ve given up on Gorman. Walker is the big question mark to me.

Your take on Palante is ridiculous!!!

Gonna have to give up more than that for a solid #3, at 7.5 mil!
Jpenglish
I’ll throw in another flyer prospect. Fedde has one year on his deal and he’s not the second coming.

Just another fan who wants good talent for junk.
The world doesn’t that way. Got to be value for value for value.
Cardinalsfan4ever
Bozo has ruined this team. We gave Edman away. He needs to be fired now. Good young talent left but will need pitching, obviously.
YaGottaBelieveAgain
I was a critic of the Arozarena trade but it looks like Liberatore might have some good years ahead. Cautiously optimistic StL fans could be. Finding success as a RP
Only age 25.5 and a LH – They have extra value usually
I might call it a tie in 2 or 3 years
Nuggethoarder
The Arozarena trade was bad. It was a clear case of poor talent evaluation (Arozarena) and poor planning by the Cardinals. They had a glut of young outfielders without playing time because they signed Fowler to a horrible contract and traded for Ozuna, who was above-average but another lost trade. If you simply keep the players you trade for Ozuna and don’t need to trade Arozarena – the team is much better (assuming similar development arcs for all players).
The Cardinals have finally recognized their issues in this area and are taking steps to address it, but yes – it’s a bit late to fix problems that started seven years ago.
screwball8
Eat most of matz contract. Try for 1B Ralphy Velazquez..
Randog650
I don’t see the Tigers doing this. They have plenty of options to fill the 4/5 rotation spots. On top of that they’ve already stated, whether fans like it or agree with it, that they would give Maeda every opportunity to win a rotation spot.
As far as the RH bat, I’ve been suspicious they’re hoping that is Baez after the hip surgery. Maybe they hope the hip surgery gets the production he had 3 or 4 years ago.
warnbeeb
If Baez could just hit. .250 with an OPS over .700 he would be serviceable, not worth his contract, but serviceable.

It’s just me, but I think Bloom is making the moves and the Cardinals are mum about it.

Look, we have Marmol and rusty dusty Blake as our manager and pitching coach so it doesn’t matter whether we have all stars or average stars we ain’t going anywhere with those two at the helm. There is no doubt the leader ship in St. Louis is nervous over the payroll when they even are worried about having to pay a picture that’s average $7 million a year. Likely depending on the schedule will be 12 games under by June 1 and then we’ll see Helsley and a few others having a good year MoveOn also.
AC Surf Baseball
Taking on Matz is risky at $11 mil, St. Louis would move him for nothing more than a top 25 organizational prospect you would think. However could see him being a left handed version of Spencer Turnbull this year in the right situation. Contract year, and he should be healthy.
sgord03
Matz is a great neighbor – will be tough to see him go. He has been amazing to my son and all the kids in the neighborhood. He’ll be the first to tell anyone that he’s not proud of his performance, but to see a neighborhood full of kids faces light up when he gets home after a game (they don’t care how he performs) has to be one of the coolest feelings there is. Cheers to him and whatever his journey has next for him.
MLBTR needs to hire editors
“Thus, Matz, in particular, seems to be an unexpected target; he would become the highest-paid pitcher on the roster.“ terrible syntax. “In particular” adds nothing to the sentence and only makes it muddier.
