As the baseball world gears up for the Winter Meetings, here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on today:
1. Soto bidding reaches new heights:
The bidding for Juan Soto has reportedly surpassed $600MM, the price tag MLBTR predicted the outfielder would land in our annual Top 50 MLB Free Agents list. The news confirms what has been apparent all along: barring a surprise decision to accept massive deferrals, Soto will land the most lucrative contract in MLB history this winter — at least in terms of the deal’s net present value. The Mets, Yankees, Red Sox, Blue Jays, and Dodgers are generally considered to be the top suitors, and there’s been no firm indication to this point that any of them are out of the bidding. With Soto narrowing the field, could a deal be in place before the Winter Meetings begin in Dallas?
2. Signings to be made official:
A handful of reported signings have yet to be made official by their clubs: the Mets’ two-year pact with Frankie Montas, the Cubs’ two-year deal with Matthew Boyd, and the Red Sox’ one-year agreement with Aroldis Chapman. It’s possible those deals are being held up while each club arranges for their new player to take a physical, as is commonplace before finalizing a contract. All three of those teams had open space on their 40-man roster at the time of reaching the agreements, so corresponding moves won’t be necessary. Still, as deals become official, additional details sometimes pop up, as was the case with the recent revelation that Blake Snell’s deal with the Dodgers contained a conditional option for a sixth year.
3. Movement on the relief market:
That aforementioned deal between the Red Sox and Chapman was the first significant signing of a reliever this winter. A handful of relievers have signed small major league deals this winter but Chapman’s $10.75MM guarantee dwarfs those of the other early signers, which are led by the $2.25MM guarantee Boston made to Justin Wilson last month. At such an early point in the offseason, there are still plenty of quality options on the relief market, which is led by southpaw Tanner Scott. Rumors that other top relievers like Jeff Hoffman and Clay Holmes have garnered interest as starters could thin out top end of the relief market a bit.
Chapman highlighted this winter’s class of one-year options from the left side out of the bullpen, though other veterans like Tim Hill, Danny Coulombe, and Andrew Chafin remain as solid options in the next tier down. Could Chapman’s signing spur more movement on the relief market, particularly with the other southpaws?

Imo, I think the Jays are out and the Dodgers are a little further out since they apparently have a limit. My heart says Red Sox, but my head says Mets. If recent history is a factor, the Dodgers will sign Soto AND Sasaki.

Like “apparently”.

While it will take a ton to outbid the Mets Soto probably will choose the Yankees even if there’s (“only”) a few millions off the table
Anthony maresca
Agree. Soto will leave at least $50 million on the table to return to Yankees which is why I believe Steinbrenner will resign him. The difference in any clubs bid is not a game changer as Soto makes that difference up in endorsements over the life of the contract easily. I do believe Soto’s deal going to have some deferred money as it makes too much sense financially given Dominican Republic taxes vs US after he retires is just too significant to ignore.
avenger65
Anthony: While I do believe the Yankees have as good a chance as any of the others, I can’t see Soto leaving money on the table. I read somewhere (maybe here) that he won’t settle for deferrals. He wants the highest AAV in the history of the game, one that may never be exceeded.
cwsOverhaul
@anthony: Soto is not realistically leaving near 50mil on the table. Maybe he gives Yanks last look to match if they are close…..but if they are well off doubt he even does them a favor like lifetime NYY Judge. Mets now have a really good POBO and deep pockets owner to close the sale.
padam
@anthony – would you leave $50M on the table? Be honest. That’s roughly 7-8% of what the total contract may be. No one is doing that.
Fever Pitch Guy
Sad – My understanding is Soto has concerns about safety for him and his family in NY, and today’s UHC CEO killing certainly didn’t help alleviate those concerns. If the money is better in Toronto or Boston or LA, he will go to one of those places.
padam
With his cash he can hire a body guard or two. People get shot everywhere, so let’s not make this a NY thing. It’s the most populated city, crap is going to happen.
Fever Pitch Guy
Padam – I relayed what has been told is a preference of his, I’m not going to support or oppose how he feels but I do support his right to feel safe or unsafe in certain cities. You can’t force him to feel comfortable where he’s not. Your perceptions are not always that of others.
Raymond Flagstaff
How uselessly vague.
Fever Pitch Guy
Ray – How incredibly delusional to expect further details about such a clear and concise comment.
acell10
Fever what are you talking about? where has Soto said anything about feeling unsafe? stop making stuff up.
thebirds
Don’t sleep on the Reds lol.
Jerry Hairston Jr's Toupee
If Soto values his safety, he ain’t going to Cincy. Everyday, the news starts off with overnight shootings that happened in downtown, the west end and OTR….

He already wasn’t going to cincy
YaGottaBelieveAgain
What would happen if a Soto bidder like BOS or TOR announced they are dropping out of Soto and withdrawing their offer?
Or one of the NY teams dropped out?
unpaidobserver
Then Id say they felt they didnt have a realistic shot of landing him.
Digdugler
Toronto is out, they are always out.
scissormetimbers
They’re not out. They’re used as leverage.
larkraxm
The Mets and Red Sox too. I think that the Yankees are the preferred destination and the Mets are/will be used to get the preferred salary. I think that we will see a lot of this over the next few years. The Mets being so vocal about their willingness to spend will cause every player to leverage the Mets when they can.
Raymond Flagstaff
Its funny how simple people think reality is. As if the mets are going to sit around and be suckers because apparently ‘babe ruth’ or something.
carlos15
The Mets actually haven’t been so vocal about their ability to spend. They said they would be in on free agents in any category but that was about it. Everyone else is talking about how much Cohen has to spend. Cohen hasn’t made those comments and neither has Stearns. This isn’t like Dombrowski/Phillies who went out and said they were gonna be obnoxious with how much money they spent a couple years ago.
superunclea
Life to see Boras play chicken and lose. All teams but Tor bounce and Jays walk away since it’s too high. He’d have a Correa 2.0 on his hands. A player, but everyone wonders why teams backed off.
stwawk
Toronto signing a player like Soto is almost as comical as hearing the Rays are in on him. The Rays are nominally tied to almost every big name on the FA market, but we all know they would never sign a pricey FA. Unless they think they could flip him, dump his salary and get some major benefit in return.
Joe says...
I think there is a rule in the CBA that says a team can’t say they are out on a specific player. They can say so in a general sense.
Anthony maresca
Teams are not allowed to state publicly that they are out of bidding per MLBPA rules. Think about it if all the big market teams said they are no longer interested, the bidding would be much lower and impact the play potential earnings.
KnicksFanCavsFan
@YaGotta
As others have mentioned, you can’t publicly declare your out of the bidding, but obviously, teams use the guise of “credible sources have said” to get their message across.
YaGottaBelieveAgain
Yes but we know there are ways to get around that and say something in a kind of legally grey area or Unofficial Way
There is the letter and the spirit of the law and you see corporations everywhere violate both with a gaggle of lawyers to back them up.
Some PR BS like this: “No collusion Here!
We’re bargaining in Good Faith !
Samuel
YaGottaBelieveAgain;
Yes…..
But it’s OK for agents to talk about their negotiations to other agents.
–
The biggest issue with MLB is the lack of total revenue sharing – then a salary floor and salary cap. This is what the other major professional team sports leagues have. In order to do that the players union would have to approve it. They will not. Unions have ruined more American businesses than any other component of a large enterprise. It’s a major reason the movie industry is/has been slowly leaving California.
terry g
Sasaki is in a different place. He chooses where he plays since the best he can do is bonus money. No one is going to turn down a pitcher of his standing for minimum salary and full control
Rexhudler86
@terry g. That’s why I think Seattle has a real chance on signing him. They’re in tier 1, and one of the better teams in that slot. Could trade a pitcher for a bat and international money to get him.
YaGottaBelieveAgain
For the good of the league and for competitive balance
I’d like to see SEA sign Soto.
Which is one of the reasons it won’t happen
Crossing your fingers he wouldn’t be Cano 2.0 deja vu – all over again Eh Yogi?
Rexhudler86
@yagotta. I was commenting on sasaki. Soto won’t sign with Seattle case closed.
YaGottaBelieveAgain
I know I get that.
I expanded the thread to get another idea across
in “a Perfect World scenario” Don’t Hold Your Breath, Right?
It related to SEA.
RockinRobin
If the Dodgers sign Soto, I don’t know. That’s just stinking nuts. I’m not sure this is good for baseball. Or maybe I am over thinking it and it doesn’t matter.
I don’t see him going to Toronto. Mets or Yankees.
StudWinfield
Why not the Yanks?
RockinRobin
I wrote my sentence poorly: “I don’t see him going to Toronto. Mets or Yankees.”
I see him going to the Mets or Yankees.
But not Toronto.
StudWinfield
Your good. I read it incorrectly. Lol
Rexhudler86
I think it comes down to the Yankees or the Mets. Cohen doesn’t care about spending just realized it’s not smart to overspend on 40 yr olds.
avenger65
Rex: I think that’s one reason Stearns was brought in, to curb Cohen’s spending. But, with a player of Soto’s caliber, Cohen is taking the lead.
Rexhudler86
@avenger65. Agreed to a extent. I don’t think burnes or Soto would be off the table. The rest you can let Stearns bargain shop.
Raymond Flagstaff
Um no he was brought in because he appears to be very good at what he does.
Anthony maresca
Its not happening. Dodgers not spending over $1 billion on a DH player when they have Ohtani when you factor the 110% tax hit. Even if Soto deferred half the contract its still over $1+ billion over the life of the contract
Raymond Flagstaff
Yea DH shouldnt even be in the league and dodgers have theirs and unfortunately for everyone he was allowed to remain after gambling on the sport. Perhaps if MLB enforces the rules the spot will open when the caricature gets what he deserves
stwawk
The Dodgers in general are no longer good for baseball. If there was ever a poster team for the need for a salary cap, look no further. Just as teams like the Pirates, A’s and Orioles are examples of the need for a salary floor.
avenger65
stwawk: Don’t forget the White Sox and the Rockies.
Raymond Flagstaff
Dodgers got lucky last year their little deadline bullpen panned out or theyd still only have the covid WS over thr last 40 years or so. People gotta stop whining so much
Led Hoyer
I am hoping for Dodgers. Let’s just have a super team. Get Soto and Roki, maybe something can change next cba.
TrillionaireTeamOperator
Basically this will boil down to what ownership and what team make up Soto wants to live with going forward. The funny thing to me is that the Yankees and the Mets have similar strengths and weaknesses in team make up, apart from the money he’d make.
Basically which uniform does Soto want to wear- light blue and orange / white and orange or dark blue and white / white and dark blue?
As for the Red Sox- they’re still a ways away from being in contention again and he could potentially become a Greinke-in-Arizona type contract where he’s insanely well paid but the rest of the team is budget friendly or don’t live up to their deals.
I think if the money is virtually equal he will stay on the Yankees, but if someone offers him an extra $50M+ he’ll go wherever that is, unless he decides he also wants to play with certain people in a certain environment (i.e. continues to play alongside Arson Judge)
metsin4
Even if the Yankees kept Soto the Red Sox are going to be better then them this year or next.
Anthony maresca
Lmao!!!!

deweybelongsinthehall
A huge IF but if Henry’s wallet is open and they get pitching and defense, they clearly can compete and beat anyone. The farm has the ability to produce and/or to use in trades like SD and Baltimore had.
metsin4
Based on the talent they currently have and the best minor league system in baseball. You do realize Duran had a better WAR than Soto. Devers had an MVP caliber year. They have 3 of the top 10 prospects in baseball. They are starting to spend.
avenger65
Dewey: Henry better open his wallet and sign Mo Salah to a long term deal!
avenger65
The golden AB? Manfred should be impeached.
Yanks4life22
I’d say let him walk and use the massive amount of money you’re saving to invest in other areas to improve the club. But it’s Cashman and Hal and they don’t have that ability. Actually they will screw it up and waste any money they use elsewhere bc they are a one trick pony. So yeah pay the man whatever he wants. It’s the only way to get talent on the team.
Hopefully he is actually the age they say he is and doesn’t celebrate birthdays like Albert Pujols did. That is my only concern in this situation.
stwawk
I couldn’t agree more. That money could be used to sign 3+ players that combined well exceed the production of Soto.
Raymond Flagstaff
3 players vs 1 is a dummy comp. U have to add 2 players. Show me how the 3 make up the gap when soto has say 2 league average teammates also in the comp, bc u know, reality. Teams have only so many spots. U have to prove the difference of a soto ca be made up. It is unlikely you do.
Yanks4life22
A good front office could spread the money out and reap the rewards of its fruits.
But, the last time Cashman was in this spot he missed on Cano (who despite PED’s was still a good player until his late 30’s) and then went out and signed Ellsbury, McCann and Beltran who were all cooked and nothing better than average players at that point. Gross.
Yankees need to spend on the sure thing which is Soto and not get themselves in trouble trying to pretend like they are cutting edge front office.
Yankee Clipper
I’m not sure which would be the better course of action (signing Soto or acquiring three top-tier players) for the Yanks.
However, I don’t think that’s a realistic choice for two reasons:
First, the Yanks FO has proven they can’t spend well (as you noted in your statement);
And second, Hal would have to spend *more* money to get three players, which he won’t do. Soto is going to be about $50MM per year because it’s such a long-term deal. How could we acquire three players for $50MM or under? The salaries wouldn’t work for purposes of AAV (or at least I can’t see how the math works).

Aroldis Chapman was an excellent signing! The Red Sox NOW need to focus on Starting Pitching by:
– Trading for Hunter Greene. He is a FRICKIN stud that would excel in a big market like Boston. Could Crawford, Casas, & Rafaela get it done?
– Trading for Crochet. Another FRICKIN stud that would excel in a big market like Boston. Could Abreu, Luis Perales, & Roman Anthony (yes I FRICKIN said RA) get it done?
2025 Starting Pitching:
– Houck RHP
– Greene RHP
– Crochet LHP
– Bello RHP
– Giolito RHP or Fitts RHP
2025 Closer: Aroldis Chapman LHP
This pitching staff would be FRICKIN exciting to watch!!

I would agree, but the reds aren’t trading Greene, and who would the red Sox trade for BOTH crochet and Greene.

No way the Yankees Shell out more than they paid for judge, who they view is better. They had to get special approval for judges contract from steinbrenner.

Apparently, the Yankees have already offered far more than Judge’s contract to Soto, according to multiple sources.

The Soto signing will go like this: Boras-“Mr. Cohen, the Yankees have offered 12/620. Your move.” Cohen- “Okay. I raise you 15/650.” Boras-“OK.Let me get back to you. Hello, Cash? Cohen raised the years and AAV. Thoughts?” Cashman: “Damn that Cohen! Alright. 14/655.” (Boras rubbing his hands together as he dreams of his commission.) Boras-“Nah, I want-Soto wants 16/670.” Cashman-“Done!” (Boras- Giggling to himself as he envisions the moat around his castle that he’ll now be able to build.

Yankee fan here. Love Soto but I would be totally fine if Hal passes on this. 600 million for honestly a DH? It’s insane. They need to keep the DH spot open for Judge and whomever and can’t have it clogged up for over a decade!

If the Mets don’t get Soto ,I really won’t be that upset.

The Padres trade for just 2 months of Tanner Scott was a bold attempt to win a WS, but parting with excellent prospect Robby Snelling sure does hurt now. They also gave up Pauley, Mazur and Beshears, who are lesser prospects but long-shots perhaps.
tuck 2
First, this isn’t “news”, it’s still rumor. Second, as great as Soto is, I can’t help but wonder how much these teams could improve if they spread $600 million around 2 or 3 really good players. In the end he’s one bat in a lineup, a terrible defender and one of the worst base runners in the league. It’s not my money but let’s be clear he is not Otani.
unglar
Hal better sign Soto. If he wants to cry poor he should sell the team to someone who can get the guys that the Yankees need. It’s unacceptable to let the Mets swoop in and poach our guy while the dodgers have stolen the moniker of evil empire while they still have their foot up our cranny.
Tristen
soto needs to get out of there and go somewhere better
