The Red Sox have made plain that their top priority this winter (except, perhaps, for their pursuit of free agent superstar Juan Soto) is improving their starting rotation. That’s led the club to be connected to a number of top free agent and trade candidates throughout the winter so far, ranging from Corbin Burnes and Max Fried in free agency to Garrett Crochet via the trade market. Earlier this winter, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow indicated that the club had no interest in parting with young first baseman Triston Casas in trade this winter, praising him as a player with “40-home run potential” who he described himself as “excited” to have on the team.
While that infatuation with Casas’s skill set may be true, Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reported earlier today that the Red Sox have been “open” to including Casas in a trade that achieves their goal of adding a pitcher to the front of their rotation. What’s more, Speier goes on to report that one executive from a rival AL club noted that he Red Sox had offered Casas as the headliner in a package for one of his team’s pitchers. That openness to dealing Casas comes as something of a surprise given Breslow’s public comments last month but Speier cautions that while the club is “exploring all avenues” to improve this winter, including the possibility of a Casas trade, the Red Sox actually dealing the youngster remains unlikely given that they’d likely be selling low after a season where he appeared in just 63 games due to torn cartilage in his ribcage.
When healthy enough to take the field, Casas hit quite well for the Red Sox this year with a .241/.337/.462 slash line (119 wRC+) and 13 homers in 243 trips to the plate. With that being said, there were some red flags in his profile this year that may give interested clubs pause. Notably, he struck out at an elevated 31.7% clip this year that helped hold him back from reaching the incredible heights he flashed after the All-Star break in 2023, when he crushed the ball to the tune of a .317/.417/.617 slash line in a 211 plate appearance sample that nearly matches his shortened 2024 campaign. Given that tantalizing upside, it’s not necessarily a surprise that the Red Sox would be hesitant to part with Casas following an injury-plagued season that raised questions about his strikeout rate.
To that end, deals involving Casas are far from the only type of trade the Red Sox have explored this winter. Speier notes that Boston has looked into trades with various clubs that come in several forms, with Casas, rookie outfielder Wilyer Abreu, and some of the club’s top prospects all being potential headliners for various deals the club has discussed this winter. Speier suggests that both top outfield prospect Roman Anthony and top second base prospect Kristian Campbell are considered “entirely off-limits” in trade talks, but that still leaves a number of exciting prospects in the Red Sox farm available in the right trade, potentially even including catcher Kyle Teel and infielder Marcelo Mayer.
The club has also, of course, explored free agency as they look for rotation upgrades. The club has been connected to top pitchers like Burnes and Fried throughout the winter, but they’ve also seemingly been involved at lower tiers of the pitching market as well in their search for arms. Robert Murray of FanSided reported yesterday that the Red Sox made a “serious push” for Guardians right-hander Shane Bieber before he re-signed in Cleveland, and Bieber reportedly turned down more money from other clubs in order to return to the only organization he’s known as a professional. Additionally, Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic reported earlier today that the Red Sox were among the teams interested in Clay Holmes before he signed with the Mets yesterday. Holmes landed in Queens as a starting pitcher after spending the majority of his big league career as a reliever, but Rosenthal and Sammon emphasized that it’s not clear whether Boston was among the clubs interested in Holmes as a starter or if they intended to use him out of the bullpen had they ultimately signed him.
That interest in Bieber (and Holmes, if they planned to put him in the rotation) suggests that the Red Sox could be willing to get creative to add pitching talent to their rotation, even as they appear focused on adding a surefire front-of-the-rotation arm. The Red Sox rotation certainly has room for multiple starters given that Tanner Houck, Brayan Bello, and Kutter Crawford seem to be the only hurlers locked into rotation spots next year, and pairing an ace-level pitcher like Burnes, Fried, or Crochet with an intriguing bounce-back option would be a good way for the club to raise the ceiling in their rotation substantially without needing to land two top-of-the-market pitchers. Max Scherzer and Tomoyuki Sugano are among the interesting one-year veteran options this winter who could have substantial upside, while Jeff Hoffman stands out as a reliever who has received interest as a starter this offseason.

They’re not trading Casas.
kzw
They will for Jared Jones. Not that I think the Pirates should do it. But I think a Jones for Casas trade is something the Sox would seriously think about.
seamaholic 2
Ha! I’m not sure the Pirates would have the same reaction.
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
If casas played shortstop or center field then he would have much more value
kzw
I don’t remember saying the Pirates said they would. I believe I said the Red Sox would. And also that I didn’t think the Pirates should do it.
Fever Pitch Guy
Sad – He was briefly a 3B but failed miserably, the unusually long legs affect his agility.
JScottG
That and he’s fat and slow.
Occams_hairbrush
You are bro.
You.
Rsox
The article says for a “front of the rotation” starter. Jones isn’t exactly that, at least not at this point.
You are looking at a Garrett Crochet/Zac Gallen/Edward Cabrera/Logan Gilbert/Freddy Peralta/German Marquez type that they would be looking for in a trade
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
If German Marquez and Edward Cabrera are there than so is Mitch Keller…
If it’s crochet or Gilbert or peralta the return would be casas plus other players but if it’s the other 3 than it would be said pitcher plus players for casas
Rsox
No matter who it is it’s going to be Casas+, Casas is not enough to get any of those Pitchers straight up
good vibes only
Edward Cabrera and German Marquez are nowhere near front of the rotation arms on a playoff caliber team.
I’m not a fan of either team but I’d rather have Jared Jones than all but maybe Gallen, Peralta, and Gilbert in a playoff series of the names you listed. But due to age and cost control I think Jones is worth more in trade than any name you listed and Casas would not be enough to get the Pirates to the table.
bwmiller79
Interesting article, clearly need to open up a roster spot for Roman Anthony.
Casas is a nice player to get in return, as a White Sox fan I’d be happy with Casas headlining a trade for Garrett Crochet, but I’m unsure how he fits their rebuild, they’d be better off with say Montgomery and Campbell, the added years of team control and the fact that they don’t have to step into the White Sox current MLB debacle is a better fit. Move a player to the big club, going to be unhappy about it, they are still a big mess and have some tearing down to do before they start adding MLB ready prospects.
The Pirates on the other hand could use a player like Casas next season. How about Luis Ortiz for Casas? Ortiz had a great season for the Bucs.
IsIt2025Already?
I’d do Jones + Holderman for Casas and Abreu!
realsox
It’s amazing how everyone gets excited about a guy who hit .241.
dirtyjog
It’s amazing that people still point to just batting average. Soto hit .242 a couple seasons ago and is about to clip $700M, what’s your point?
stymeedone
The point is that batting average is the most scarce commodity among hitters and is vastly undervalued by the current metrics.
Occams_hairbrush
He has a career .830 OPS. Get into this century.

Casas for Cease……..
GarryHarris
No, Javier Baez for Triston Cease
Rsox
Even Javier Baez had to laugh at that one…

I think it’s safe to say that Giolito will be part of the rotation in 2025. But I agree they should go out and get two pitchers and treat Giolito like a Pivetta replacement.
ClevelandSteelEngines
They are open to the possibility at the high price. Hence, this is likely just a rumor to draw interest and talks. It would be surprising that they would give up Casas. The flip side is that it doesn’t seem like the responses they’ve received when discussing Abreu. Can’t wait for some actual news.
MuleorAstroMule
If I had an oft-injured 1b with no real track record whose entire value lies within his bat I’d want to trade him for a top of the rotation arm too. I’m not just sure who takes the other end of that deal.
ClevelandSteelEngines
Not sure why you’d want to trade him under those conditions, it doesn’t leave much leverage as his value would be down.
Joemo
Oft injured? Guy had one freak injury and he’s suddenly made of glass? Weird flex.

Fever Pitch Guy
Muskie – That’s only the MLB injuries.
For instance Casas missed 2 months in 2022 due to injury. Three years in a row, thats a lot of injuries for someone so young.
His unusual approach to conditioning is a concern to management, I’ll leave it at that.
ClevelandSteelEngines
“According to recent reports, baseball prospect Triston Casas suffered a sprained ankle, specifically a high right ankle sprain, while playing for the Worcester Red Sox, which sidelined him for a period of time; the injury occurred while running back to third base on a lineout, causing his right foot to land awkwardly on the bag”
So a high ankle sprain, a bit of bursitis, and swinging so hard he torn his rib cartilage. Doesn’t seem chronic.
Sagacity
MuleorAstroMule – I give up what 1B are you talking about because you certainly didn’t describe Casas. You seem to be a hater not a baseball fan. Get used to Casas he’s going to be around along time and will make multiple all=star games. Two years from now you’ll feel foolish about what you wrote here.
joblo
Red Sox need pitching. Pirates have young, controllable pitching and need a first baseman. Make it happen.
ellisd19830
I’d rather he go to Pittsburgh than seattle.
Sagacity
joblo – What are Houck, Crawford and Bello? I thought they were young controllable pitchers. We don’t need more of them as much as we need two established studs to head up the young staff we already have.
If you want a guy from Pittsburgh not named Skenes it should be Hayes to replace Devers at 3B so he can move to DH.
JoeBrady
Won’t Davis be playing 1st?
Fever Pitch Guy
Not a surprise, I’ve been saying for a while that Casas is not untouchable because of the many concerns surrounding him. It’s a shame, his power when he makes solid contact is unquestionable.
Sagacity
Fever Pitch Guy – I say consider the source of this BS.
I think Casas needs to be untouchable as one of two young all-star quality players on the roster. This organization groomed Mookie then crapped on him. Is that the legacy of the Boston Red Sox now. Groom yet another outstanding young player and crap on him?
Casas is going nowhere. Speier is an idiot. I read his weekly updates and just shake my head wondering how he got his job.
Fever Pitch Guy
Sag – I totally agree I do NOT want Casas traded. Give him a chance to play a full season and stay healthy.
I agree with you Rafaela is the one who should be traded. He has no position, Story won’t be traded and Duran shouldn’t be either.
OF – Duran, Anthony, Soto/Teo/Santana (Santana the most likely)
IF – Devers, Story, Campbell, Casas with possibly Mayer/Grissom in the mix
But the Sox would have to eat probably $30M of Rafaela’s contract.
Fever Pitch Guy
Good grief … Santander, not Santana!
At least I didn’t type “Santa”!
letitbelowenstein
sag, nobody ‘crapped’ on Betts. Betts said he was testing free agency and obviously lied when he signed an extension with L.A. Why is it so hard for people to see the truth?
stymeedone
When he was with Boston, and the choice was Boston or Free Agency, he said that. He didn’t want to sign with Boston.
Sagacity
letitbelowenstein – You think that’s the truth? Lets fill in the missing pieces you ignored or didn’t know about!!
1 – Mookie gets an offer for $300 Million for ten years. My guess it’s the standard low ball request from Henry and gang which has happened to most star players with the Red Sox from 2000 to 2019 when this one happened.
2 – Dombrowski had a policy of offering a new contract the Spring Training of the year prior to when a player became a free agent. So for Mookie he was to make his deal in Feb/Mar of 2020. Mookie got $27 Million from him in 2019 and the expectation was what Mookie would be offered what he wanted beginning in 2020. Mookie wanted $36Million per year which was a $9 Million raise for the next 12 years. He would have received that in 2020 except the issue between Price/Eckersley was commented on by ownership in a very public and negative way and Mookie took issue and met with ownership about their behavior. After that meeting, Dombrowski’s plan to give Mookie $420 Million for 12 years was rejected by ownership. Dombrowski said the team needs Mookie and he was planning on making the offer so ownership fired Dombrowski and brought in Bloom to clear out the two black stars that considered them racists.
3 – Mookie always said he wanted a fair market salary and if he couldn’t get that from Boston he was going to test free agency. He didn’t reject Boston, the owners rejected Mookie and that cost Dombrowski (their greatest GM) his job.
4 – LAD provided Mookie with a more than fair market value and he signed. He never lied. He did EXACTLY what he said he was going to do. He sought out a fair market price for his services and even though it was a COVID year, the Dodgers offered him a deal with a greater Net Present Value than the deal he talked with Dombrowski about. LAD put a $65Million dollar signing bonus in 2020 which significantly upped the NPV of the offer. He never said stopped asking for a fair market value price. People can spin it to suggest he demanded to test free agency but that’s BS. He ask for a fair amount of pay like any normal person would.
So wake up and get your facts straight. You have no idea what you are talking about and there is no issue with seeing the truth on my part. You clearly are very uninformed about what happened.
The payback for Betts sticking up for a fellow black player is what I consider being crapped on along with the GIVEAWAY that Bloom did not asking for anything of value in return. Along with Mookie, Dombrowski got crapped on too. But that’s what happens when you have racist owners. Their prejudice has cost Boston fans a lot. The single worst thing is losing Mookie and then Dombrowski but another huge negative impact of their racism is their attempt to fix the image by hiring an unqualified manager who turned out to be the biggest cheater in the history of the game and then rehiring so he didn’t tell the commissioner he had shared the cheating plans in Boston with the owners.
These topics are not allowed to be discussed but that doesn’t mean they didn’t happen, Mookie and Dombrowski are too classy to discuss the Boston dirty laundry. That’s not an issue for me!!! I don’t have a public image to live up to.

If you trade Casas, why bother trying to go after Soto??? That’s one of your main building blocks!
soxfan1
Do you expect we don’t get a building block back?
Salzilla
Why though? That’s robbing Peter to pay Paul. Keep Casas who’ll be a cornerstone for years and just buy some free agents.
JoeBrady
Salzilla
Why though?
==========================
Maybe they want a RH 1B.
Salzilla
I just feel like of all the things they can do, that wouldn’t be one I’d do.
JoeBrady
It all depends on the return. I’d be in no rush to trade him, but if were were looking at say Jared Jones, Crochet, Bubba Chandler types of pitchers, then we can afford to part with Casas as part of the package..
Trading Casas + a non-top four prospect is more acceptable the trading a big-four.
Sagacity
soxfan1 – Why would we? Did we get one for Mookie? Assuming smart decisions by the front office is a huge mistake based on past performance.
Joemo
If the Red Sox get Soto (big if) that makes some of the other bats more expendable to get top tier pitching.
To get top tier pitching, they either have to pay the cash or part with good players and top prospects.
Salzilla
Pay the cash for SP and have a longer lineup! Ir trade some not ready prospects. The fact that Sox fans are into this is mind boggling to me.
Can you trade Triston to the Yanks? I’ll gladly take him. You can have Gil and an extra.
kzw
Pitching and defense win World Series titles. A Yankees fan should know this…
Salzilla
HA! Big boring meh to that. There’s plenty ways to build a roster. I’ll lolz like crazy if they trade Casas for any SP who can more likely get a major injury and be out for more than a year rather than paying for it. Casas is a young stud 1b and other clubs are licking their chops to give you a SP for him. Ridiculous move.
Joemo
I’m not saying that trading Casas is part of my ideal off-season,
But they need to free up roster spots regardless. If it’s not Casas, it’s an OF. Roman Anthony is going to be the real deal, and they gotta make space for him as well.
The Sox are in a very tight spot because of God awful roster construction. “Let’s just draft every bat possible, bonus points if they’re LH, and just wing it with pitchers.”
Salzilla
No one is the real deal until they are. I’d trade him straight for a stud pitcher more tbh. Triston has proven he can hit in the show, that’s not a guy you move.
That said trade Yoshida first to open up a spot. Maybe you can get a lesser sp for him, and sign a better one. One SP, no matter who it is, isn’t making a difference. They pitch every five days after all.
Fernando P
I’m never trading any controllable pitcher for a 1b. No disrespect to Casas, but 1b is one of the easier positions to fill.
soxintwo
You do know that they drafted 13 pitchers this past season? I believe they’re changing their drafting strategies already.
Salzilla
It’s all subjective. I think it’s super important to have a string rotation, but overall I value a stringer lineup more. Again, starters pitcher once every five days, your position players mostly play every day. They’re going to affect your outcome more overall during tye season.
JoeBrady
God awful roster construction. “Let’s just draft every bat possible,
==========================
4 of those bats are top-25 prospects, and three of them top-10. That argues in favor of drafting bats.
stymeedone
Can’t have weak fielders at half the positions. Casas leaves, and Devers moves to 1B, allowing a stronger defensive player at 3B. If it strengthens the rotation even better.
Randy Red Sox
sounds like a typical Red Sox offseason so far. interested but missing out on several options so far.
DirtyWater04
Yup, just more of the same old crap. “In” on Soto (likely nowhere near the reported bids over $700 MM from the two NY teams), “interested” in Holmes, “seriously pushed” for Bieber…..and in late February, it’ll be the same dog and pony show about how great they feel about Giolito and Brad Keller, and those two were actually their first choice all along. Nothing to see here.
Sagacity
DirtyWater04 = You really need to use the words “allegedly in on” because we never see the proof. Bieber took a home town discount because there was no serious push by Boston.
Your comments are so spot on!!! Excellent.
DirtyWater04
At the end of the day with Bieber I do get it, he’s working his way back from a season-ending injury last year and Cleveland’s the only team he’s ever played for. There’s value to the player in having that comfort of a familiar environment to work your way back into, as opposed to having to get yourself re-established while also figuring out a new team, city, and endearing yourself to a new fanbase. So I kind of expected he was always going to re-sign there for 2025. If he is able to come back at full strength or something close to it, I’d love to see the Sox make a serious effort for him next winter.
Fever Pitch Guy
Dirty – I don’t get it from the team perspective at all.
$14M for him to work his way back throughout the season, and if he finishes strong he bounces? Cleveland should have insisted on a 2026 team option.
DirtyWater04
Cleveland is extraordinarily cheap, so my assumption is if Bieber looks like himself they’ll be trading him this summer. With that expectation in mind it’s a little bit less of a head scratcher.
Sagacity
Fever Pitch Guy – I think Cleveland really likes Bieber but accepts the fact that his skills are more than they can afford. I am amazed nobody offered more for him because he’s got several more great years ahead of him once he returns from TJ surgery. Boston should have offered the contract you are suggesting for Cleveland because he proved his one slightly down year was a fluke before he hurt his elbow. He’s been great his entire life so there is no reason to expect guys at his level to suddenly be done. Bad move on Boston’s part but is that so surprising? Breslow hasn’t impressed me except for hiring really good coaches. Too bad he can’t dump the terrible manager.!!
Sagacity
Dirty – I think you are right and if Breslow was smart he would offer offer Story and Yoshida and money for Bieber then sign Bieber to a 3 or 4 year deal for an AAV of $20 Million per year with incentives. That allows Breslow to only seek ONE SP1 this off season.
Sagacity
I truly believe 2025 should be the year we dump Yoshida and Story’s salaries from the books. Pay off their contracts and take the hit since there is so much room under the CAP and go forward without these two albatross contracts hanging over your head.
DirtyWater04
I would love to get rid of Story but I am less hopeful we will be able to. Im thinking he needs to post one fully healthy season with production reminiscent of his Colorado days, and then we might have a chance next winter. Otherwise I’m mentally preparing for the reality that we will probably have to go the Rusney Castillo route with him.
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
Would love seeing casas as m’s first baseman but 99.9% sure that doesn’t happen the pirates (wow I said pirates) or astros or nationals are likelier
If he does gets traded i think he goes to DC
Joemo
“Robert Murray of FanSided reported yesterday that the Red Sox made a “serious push” for Guardians right-hander Shane Bieber before he re-signed in Cleveland”
Ah yes, we have moved from the few weeks of hope for Red Sox fans, to the “Red Sox were in on player X but just missed out”.
I thought we could have made it through the winter meetings before this happened but I guess not.
swanhenge
I would be fine w Casas as a headliner in a trade for Crochet. The fact that they’re saying he’s open to be traded makes me think there’s no traction w CHW.
They can and need to make that trade.
cwsOverhaul
If Campbell won’t be traded in addition to blocking Anthony, Crochet will be dealt elsewhere. They want high end position players with no service time burned. Mayer’s missed time is likely an issue for accepting him as a headliner.
Sagacity
swanhenge – Don’t hold your breath on a deal for Crochet. The trade deadline was a more likely time and it didn’t happen because they simply want way too much. You watch, in 2025 Crochet is going to prove he’s not special and they will have wasted a great opportunity to stick to another team. We need to be thankful we didn’t give up a good player to get him.
swanhenge
So you think Crochet won’t be dealt this off season?
CHI wants exactly like you said… controllable, MLB-ready talent. Casas and Abreu fit that bill. One of them could be the tops of a four player package. I’m kinda sold on Crochet. That walk % is incredible.
Fever Pitch Guy
Swan – No they’ve already said they want prospects because they won’t be competing until around 2028-2029.
swanhenge
Regardless, my fearless prediction is BOS signs the Polar Bear thus making Casas dispensible. He’ll help bring back SP (Woo, Castillo, JJones, Crochet.. take your pick)
Now, to get rid of that Masa contract…
soxintwo
Why is everybody so in love with crochet?
The guy pitches four innings, maybe five if we’re lucky he is not proven to be a seven inning Frontline pitcher. I didn’t say that he wasn’t good when he’s in there but we’re looking for somebody that can go seven.
Dogbone
I’m sure not a fan of Reinsdorf or the Chisox – but I think you’re evaluating Crochet wrong. I do watch them often, and they were just being cautious with Crochet after the all star break. If and when healthy, he is certainly more than the 4 or 5 inning pitcher who you describe. Crochet is solid – IF healthy.
If a team’s doctors green light his health, IMO he’s a guy who can be your opening day starter.
JoeBrady
soxintwo
Why is everybody so in love with crochet?
The guy pitches four innings, maybe five
======================
Before he was put on an innings restriction, he averaged 5.63 IP/GS. The league average is 5.22.
KingKen
The Red Sox aren’t considering moving Casas for Crochet. If you re-read the article it states that Boston contacted a “rival AL club” about a trade headlined by Casas for one of their starters. In no way is Chicago considered a rival club right now. The most likely other team contested was Seattle, with Boston targeting either Logan Gilbert or George Kirby.
A deal between those 2 teams makes a lot of sense because Seattle is desperate for offense and Boston needs the pitching. Casas and another player like Valdez or Chase Meidroth for Gilbert works for both teams.
stymeedone
How is Seattle more of a rival than Chicago? It didn’t say contender. I would guess Tampa Bay. They may have to cut costs due to the stadium situation. Diaz has been in rumors.
KingKen
Simply from the fact that Seattle has been one of the teams in competition for wild card berths the past couple of years. Chicago isn’t competing for anything for the foreseeable future.
As for TB, they’d only have tepid interest in Casas anyway since he’s a year away from arbitration at which point he’ll start getting expensive. Not to mention the Sox wouldn’t be all that keen on trading Casas to a division rival.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
Casas and Wilyer for George Kirby?
Rsox
Seattle repeatedly says they won’t deal from their starting rotation, but then Luis Castillo’s name has been thrown around so who knows.
What about Casas and either Abreu or a couple of prospects to the Astros for Framber Valdez? Astros are said to be looking for ways to save money and Valdez is projected at about $17 million for next season
KingKen
Seattle can keep saying that all they want but they’re never going to improve if they stick to that. That proposed trade works for both teams giving Seattle a desperately needed offensive boost and gives Boston the upper part of the rotation arm they need.
Sagacity
The Red Sox need to scour the rosters of all non big market teams to find places for Yoshida, Story and Devers. The owners chose to tear down the 2018 team which should have ended in a clean slate but Bloom screwed up and created three anchors that hang around the neck of the roster payroll.
The owners aren’t spending money since those 3 big mistakes so I propose we eat the money or make an effort to trade away the over paid players so the farm system can be the starting point for the future Red Sox roster. Clearing just 3 contracts would have a net result going into the 2026 season of the following:
NO multi-year contracts costing more than $8Million a year except for Arenado’s remaining 2 years at $25.55Million. That’s as close to a clean slate as one could hope for.
Now think about what Breslow (or a new GM) could do to fill out the roster using the core group of players from the farm system starting in 2026:.
C – Teel = Controllable for 6 years
C – Wong – Controllable for 3 years
1B – Casas – Controllable for 3 years
2B – Grissom – Controllable for 4 years
2B – Sogard – Controllable for 5 years
SS – Campbell – Controllable for 5 or 6 years
SS – Mayer – Controllable for 5 or 6 years
3B – Arenado = Free Agent 2028
OF – Anthony – Controllable for 5 or 6 years
OF – Duran – Controllable for 3 years
OF – Abreu – Controllable for 4 years
OF – Rafaela – Under contract to 2032
OF – Montgomery – Controllable for 6 or more years
SP – Houck – Controllable for 2 years
SP – Crawford – Controllable for 3 years
SP – Bello – Under contract to 2030
RP – Bernardino – Controllable for 3 years
RP – Booser – Controllable for 6 years
RP – Criswell – Controllable for 4 years
SP – Fitts – Controllable for 6 years
SP – Perales – Controllable for 6 years
So here is the incredible fact –
In 2026 our current payroll of guaranteed money without Devers, Story and Yoshida is $16Million plus all the controllable players listed above and Arenado’s remaining two years. Look at the positions that would be filled in 2026 by home grown ball players that could end up all-stars.
Now look at the holes in the line-up and tell me it wouldn’t be worth it to clear the books in 2025 replacing Devers long-term deal with Arenado’s short team deal, Then dumping Yoshida’s deal and Story’s deal. Take a one time money hit in 2025 and in 2026 you would have roughly $65 Million of payroll based on the current roster less the three players plus Arenado. Finding the best possible players and filling the holes with the right all-star personnel would leave you incredibly far under the CAP and give the front office time to define which guys get LT contracts based on performance before the controllable time periods is completed.
This is very achievable and wow would that change Boston’s future. We are three bad contracts from payroll freedom. The reason this should be attractive to ownership is that profits will be up, payroll will be significantly less, talent will be up and control of contracts will be at an all-time high.
How much fun would it be to see this happen after the last 5 years!!!
CheapBloom
Uhhh… no. You’re not trading Devers. I could see Yoshida, possibly Story, although his defense is an asset and without his injuries the last 2 years his deal is not an albatross. The young prospects are far from a sure thing, much less potential “all stars”. You have a homegrown player in Devers that is one of the best bats in the league with 40 HR potential who is still entering his prime. You dont trade him. He had a down year and was still great offensively. This notion that the prospects are anything other than lottery tickets at the MLB level is insane. Boston is a big market club. They can afford to spend on proven talent in free agency AND develop some of their premier prospects. I’ll never understand the fans who want them to behave like a small market team.
Sagacity
CheapBloom – Devers sucks as a fielder and a team mate / human being. The guy won’t help his team by burning his glove. The sooner he’s gone along with Cora, the better the organization will be going forward.
Devers is the biggest waste of money in Red Sox history along with being the worst fielder at 3B in Red Sox and MLB history.
40 HR potential? hahahaha Wow he’s played 8 seasons and is now closing in on his 30s and he’s suddenly going to hit 40 HRs?
Let me recite the HRS to date, 10, 21, 32, 11, 38, 27, 33 and 28.
His highest OPS+ was 141 after 8 years. Mookie Betts put up an OPS+ of 186 at age 25. Boston didn’t hesitate to dump him and he was so much better than Devers it’s not funny without counting his defense!!!
Devers at $30Million is a bust and we have 9 more years of it!!! OUCH!!! Great job Bloom. It’s imperative to dump Devers for whatever you can get for him. He can’t justify his salary in a good year. He’s a guy worth about $20 to $22 million at best since he puts up huge negatives on defense and his offense is just a little above league average. 126 OPS+ for his career. Casas put up a 129 in his rookie season. Mookie Betts in his 11 seasons has a 138 OPS+ with his 5 OPS= numbers in LA being 147, 126, 140, 165 and 145. He was 27 when he went to LAD, the same age that Devers was to start his absurd contract. Five years later, Mookie is getting better. Wanna bet that won’t be the case for Devers? That’s why he’s got to go to help the defense, the clubhouse and the future success of the Red Sox.
I guess you didn’t read closely because I suggested the house cleaning because of the BAD contracts. I didn’t suggest to behave like a small market team, I suggested that we fix the bad contracts, develop the young players internally and fill the weak spots with Free Agent all-stars like we did when Dombrowski was GM. It infuriates me that the club makes $300 Million or more a year and we aren’t sitting right below the CAP EVERY year.
Sad.Sox 3
Sage – I appreciate that your posts are always well thought out. However, your desire to get rid of Devers is so off-base. Devers is a stud player, and Sox can’t continue to give away studs. Sox need to add, not subtract. Position aside, there’s only so many guys in mlb that can do what Devers does offensively.
I have no desire to watch the team you laid out. That’s for fans of the Tampa Model.
I want to see star players in the Red Sox uniform, alongside our home grown players.
Sagacity
Sad Sox 3 = I appreciate you not blasting me for disagreeing with you.
Here is why I disagree:
Devers is NOT a stud player, at best he is a stud hitter and I even question that based on 8 seasons of results. I don’t want to give him away I want to swap for another star player with a far shorter financial obligation. I don’t believe there is a person on the planet that rationally would believe Arenado isn’t more of a stud than Devers. Yes he is old and that age allows for a shorter contract.
So this isn’t like Mookie where we give away a guy in the highest echelon of baseball for nothing. This is a swap of greatness to shorten the financial obligation. So no subtracting, adding Arenado is clearly a big gain thanks to his defense, work ethic, presence in the clubhouse and his baseball acumen.
Devers IS NOT an exceptional hitter, he’s an above average hitter. You can see this fact if you go to baseball reference and pick a critical stat like adjusted OPS+ or WAR and see if Devers has made the top 10 list in any seasons. Those players are studs or elite. Devers doesn’t show up on those lists as often as guys like Mookie, Freeman, Ohtani, Harper etc.
Last point. I laid out a team of young players seeking greatness. Duran is already there. Houck is already there. Others will follow and as they do the team fills in with home grown all=stars. But I left the club payroll at such a low level that all the holes can be filled with super stars. That’s the team I was offering if the front office has the guts to actually start spending again. I did NOT say that was to be the starting line-up. I said fill in the holes with nearly $200 Million of available payroll. Clearly with a TB starting point, we could get the two studs at pitching we need. We could then see what else is missing or if there are injuries we would have the money to add all-star quality players to backfill like the Yankees and Dodgers do.
I suggested this for the very reason you pointed out in your last comment. I want to see star players in Red Sox uniforms and JD Martinez was the last stud we added back in 2018, 5 years ago.
All I’m saying is take out the trash, use the youth and smart player selections to fill out a roster of all-stars to compete for division titles not .500 seasons.
Sad.Sox 3
The protection Devers had in the lineup the last two seasons (generally) have been Turner and Wong. That’s not scaring a pitcher into giving Devers anything to hit. Moreover, he played the last 40 games of the season last year with two bum shoulders.
What I’m saying is, if Devers is perhaps the second or third best player on the team followed closely behind by an emerging Casas and a healthy and contributing Story, now you’ve got something going.
I’m sorry that Adames is off the board, he could’ve played SS and moved Story to 2B. In that scenario Mayer is trade bait for a SP.
As it stands right now, get me Pete Alonso as everyday DH, as all it costs is money, and Gleyber Torres on a one year “show ne” deal
luckyh
Better to trade him than Abreu.
Sagacity
luckyh – Why would it be better to trade Casas than Abreu? Are you aware of the stockpile of outfielders in the organization? Are you aware of the lack of talent at 1B in the organization after Casas?
There really is no need to trade anyone except Yoshida, Story and Devers to improve payroll. Everyone else should be given a chance to develop into all-stars and then we extend contracts in the future to those that prove worthy. That way Abreu and Casas both get a chance to prove themselves without being traded prematurely.
Nobody can predict with any certainty whether Casas or Abreu will turn out to be the better player so I disagree with your comment that it’s better to trade Casas than Abreu.
Pads Fans
The Red Sox will either trade Casas and move Devers to 1B, or they will keep Casas, move Devers to DH.
After paying Devers $313 million, which of those 2 positions is Devers going to take to better?
Sagacity
Pads Fans – Devers has no skills to play 3B and that applies to every other location on the field. He’s a defensive butcher. DH is the only position he is qualified for and his hitting skills will only last so many years so by moving him now to DH we are radically uplifting team defense and allowing him to have less injury risk. Hopefully, his body won’t deteriorate any faster than the other players with similar builds that were good hitters; Pujols and Miggy Cabrera. Their good years ended by 33. That means 6 potential good years left out of the 9 years on the contract. Trade him Arenado and STL gets a younger player at a similar price and we get a reprieve from the massive contract that Devers has when Arenado’s contract ends at the end of 2027 at age 36. We also get maybe the greatest defensive 3B in history which makes him the opposite end of the spectrum from what we have. If you check the numbers, Arenado didn’t win a gold glove last year but it’s not because he regressed, someone else simply improved and past him at the top of the heap. Arenado’s fielding percentage rose last year but not as much as the competition.
So lets not worry about Devers and where to beg him to play. A real team mate would volunteer to take the DH spot because they recognized how badly they are hurting their team and for how long they have been doing it!! Arenado is a far better player than Devers and he’s a great example to the young players and Cora. Arenado has the work ethic that Cora never had as a player, bench coach or manager.
Fever Pitch Guy
Pads – There’s another possible option, Devers to 1B to maintain some of his trade value and Casas to DH.
Also not to nitpick but DH is a role, not a position ;o)
Maddog Jameson
I’m thinking long term, does it really make sense to wildly overpay for Soto or even front line pitching. It seems this year’s crop of free agents will all be over paid. I’m guessing many teams will have regrets sooner or later. Trust me I want the Red Sox to get some pitching. But the same people begging for the Sox to make splash will be the same people saying it was a terrible deal in a few years.
Fever Pitch Guy
Mad – Let me ask you a question, if Soto is Manny without the roids … do you give him 12 years with a total $600M NPV?
I certainly would.
Wire to wire 2024
Contracts are getting out of control and that’s not going to magically change next year, making a big splash or even medium splash in fa always has a risk. That’s just the way it is..
Sad.Sox 3
All- stop worrying about the dollars in the market. It’s just numbers to be balanced against the tax threshold.
EVERY baseball team MAKES enough money to afford it
itsmeheyhii
Would be insane to trade Casas while not at peak value, unless a team is paying as if he is at peak value.
Those 2023 numbers are ridiculous.
itsmeheyhii
I suppose. They probably know his medicals well enough to decide if its worth trying to up his value.
Gotta be a tough call.
hyraxwithaflamethrower
Casas has been worth 2.0bWAR/162 so far. Red Sox fans are acting like he’s ridiculously valuable. I see a solid starter, maybe with another gear, but not sure.
And him for Crochet makes no sense for the White Sox’ timeline. By the time they even have a chance to compete, half or more of Casas’ deal will be done. Headliner should be a prospect. Also, the White Sox tendered Vaughn and 1B/DH isn’t as big of a hole as 2B or RF (though I admit they have holes practically everywhere).
Sad.Sox 3
It’s time to rely less on bWar and more on the eye ttest. Some organization use advanced analytics to diminish player value the way you just did. For such a young player Casas has a wonderful control over the strike zone, a great approach to hitting and massive raw power. His defense and conditioning may need work.
Bruin1012
Biggest I remember watching early in the season and the first 10 games or so Casas looked like he was searching for it he then all of a sudden after that first 10 games he caught fire he was really hot right up until that freak injury. I remember texting one of my buddies a week before his injury Casas was going to get really hot you could see it the way he took his at bats. He did get hot then he was out. I have no Bobby Dalbec worry about him I do have injury worry until he plays a full season.
hyraxwithaflamethrower
He’s a 1B; they’re supposed to have well above average bats. But he gives away a lot of that value with his defense. To be more than just an average 1B starter, he needs to either kick the hitting up a notch or be a better defender.
And while I can agree there can be an over-reliance on metrics, eye tests are notoriously biased. At least numbers aren’t affected by which team you root for.
JoeBrady
For such a young player Casas has a wonderful control over the strike zone,
=============================
The 77 Ks in 212 ABs is pretty bad. 30 BB is good, but that ratio is well worse than 2:1.
Sad.Sox 3
Joe B – not sure what you mean? If you want to quote a stat here it would be chase rate not K’s.
Mlb 2024 Chae rate was 27.7%, Casas chase rate was 23.1%
JoeBrady
I think I can still Ks, though that can be softened by the chase rate. But that is still 218 Ks/600 ABs.
Sad.Sox 3
Agreed, he needs to cut down on K’s

“Front of rotation”….sort of like a Chris Sale?
brinxsoxcelts
Casas is by far their smartest hitter and trading
him would be idiotic. The Sox Championship Teams
of past were great at wearing pitchers out and
we need to get back to that place.
Sad.Sox 3
Compare Casas at-bats to other 24 year old power hitting prospects. He spits on pitches just outside the zone, controls the clock, doesn’t panic when behind and uses the whole field with two strikes.
Definitely a mature understanding of hitting. If you want to nit-pick, he’s almost too selective
WrongVerb
Casas and Abreu for Lodolo and Steer. Who says no?
Bruin1012
The Red Sox and easily.
Wire to wire 2024
I don’t even know if the reds do that, they barely have enough depth for a rotation and steer has been good. Not that I wouldn’t love to have abreu but I don’t think the reds and Sox match up on a trade
stymeedone
With Candelario and Strand, why would Cincinnati need another 1B?
Wire to wire 2024
Exactly, and the price for Casas is high which I mostly understand but as a reds fan I’m not interested.
WrongVerb
Why would the Reds want a better hitter? I can’t imagine.
I swear, us Reds fans have become so traumatized by the club’s cheapness that most don’t think in terms of getting better players, but instead they think about “filing holes” (e.g. sign Hays instead of trading for Tucker). It’s sad that we don’t demand more out of this team. Then again, those fans are the type PhilC was appealing to when he uttered his “where ya gonna go” comment.
My fandom, for one, is following Elly. If he stays with the Reds, great. If be goes to LA, then so do I.
Wire to wire 2024
Casas isn’t worth to us what the Red Sox would want, we shouldn’t be trading starting pitchers and steer has been solid. If a team with an abreu wants some prospects I’m down but that’s another story…
JoeBrady
What would you want for Lowder?
Wire to wire 2024
From the Sox?

One of the biggest needs on the team is a right-handed bat with pop that is hopefully a plus fielder to upgrade the defense, offense, and power. This description looks A LOT like Mookie Betts. A beloved super star player making $365 million over 12 years for the Dodgers because management thought the price tag was too high. However, handing one of the worst fielders in the major leagues $331 over 11 years seemed like a good investment.
The irony of being willing to pay over $700 million for a left-handed bat with pop that is weak defensively and doesn’t address any glaring needs on the team is funny as hell. $700 million to solve nothing, instead of solving 3 or 4 problems on a team that hasn’t had a winning record in years. Ok brainiacs. Getter done.
Bruin1012
We just need this Soto sweepstakes to end then Breslow can sign one of Burnes or Fried another guy like Eovaldi and then another high end bullpen arm like Tanner Scott.
I’m in the camp that you don’t trade Casas unless you believe that rib cage injury is a chronic thing. If you trade Casas you are trading a guy who has already shown he can have an elite bat in the big leagues. If you look at his slash lines by month in 2023 it is quite eye opening. He was awful in April of 2023 and league average in May of 2023. After that point he was one of the best hitters in baseball especially from July 1st on. It was a small sample size but he was elite. He controlled the at bats like few players do and here’s the thing he knows the strike zone better than most umpires do. A lot of his K’s were of the looking variety on pitches off the plate especially last year. He will benefit from the challenge system that will be coming to the big leagues soon it’s not if but when. The guy has had 717 big league at bats and has hit 42 homers that’s borderline elite power and he hasn’t even really hit his stride yet.
The other issue in trading Casas there isn’t a ready replacement. I wouldn’t want to trust Devers at first let’s not forget that first baseman use there glove more then any position on the field it’s certainly not a slam dunk that Devers can transition to first. If Devers really struggles there who are you going to put there if you trade Casas. Ironically it’s the one position the farm system doesn’t have much talent at.
I think it would be a mistake to move Casas and his 4 years of control.

A HARD NO ON CASAS! ANTHONY AND CAMPBELL
IM OK WITH MEYER OR TEEL NOT BOTH
OR ABREU BUT NO MORE THAN 1 OF THE ABOVE PLUS GUYS LIKE ARIAS, BLEIS, ROMERO, ZANETELLO SOME COMBINATION OF THOSE BUT DEFINITELY NOT WITH OUT EXTENDING A CROCHET AS PART OF THE DEAL. HES ONLY GOT 1 YR AS AN SP SO TBD IF HES A TRUE FRONT LINE STARTER REGARDLESS NO ON CASAS DONT BE STUPID CRAIG BRESLOW, THERES ALWAYS NEXT YEAR IF YOU ONLY SIGN 1 FREID 1 BURNS OR BUELLER MANAEA. PLUS SASAKI IS OUT THERE…DONT BEND ON THE DYNASTY THAT WE WAITED 6 YEARS FOR! F THAT!
Michael K. Igawa
Casas is being shopped because he is obnoxious, annoying, and insufferable. You can tell he is universally disliked by his own teammates. If you were standing next to him at a party, you would either move or tell him to shut up.
Sad.Sox 3
That’s not true because even during his injury he was in the dugout yucking it up with his teammates, and dropping in on NESN and FOX with some funny stories and commentary!
His “problem” is that he refused to negotiate a long term extension with a home team discount. Perhaps Mr. Henry was insulted. But, he’s been a a solid hitter through all levels of the minors, Team USA and probably since he’s 9yo. What’s the point of developing players if your so quick to dismiss them?
Salvi
Reasons to Move:
1) Poor Defense
2) Worrisome Injuries
3) Poor Work Ethic
4) Low Re-Signability Potential
No Brainer, when your team has so many lefties either playing or soon to be playing.
Wire to wire 2024
Agree but those are reasons not to trade for him yet they’ll want a lot so idk how they work it out.
Salvi
Agreed, value is a lot lower than what most Red Sox fans expect. For example Trade Evaluator has Duran (68) at more than double Casas’s (30) value. To get a good SP Red Sox in return for Casas, they will have to add a decent second player to the equation.
A lefty has to move, because of all the incoming lefties, and I’d prefer to hold on Casas, but something has to give.
Wire to wire 2024
Maybe they should keep Casas and see if his value can bounce back, trade someone else in the meantime like abreu
Salvi
There is no perfect lefty hitter to be traded. Someone with value and has many flaws. With that said:
Abreu just won a gold glove, while Casas is a poor defensive fielder. Add in that the Red Sox defense is one of the worst in the league and you’ve just made the D much worse. All the while the team is trying to entice Free Agent SPs. A tough sell if your 24th ranked defense is projected to be even worse next year.
I would definitely move Casas, while he value ‘may’ improve, another injured season and his value craters. I would take what I can get for Casas now, while keeping the best D I can, which includes Abreu.
Bruin1012
Abreu has hands full holding onto his outfield job. The Roman empire is starting very soon. I wouldn’t be surprised if Anthony beats out Abreu for right field out of spring training. Even if Anthony starts in AAA he will take over right field from Abreu at some point. Abreu has 5 years of control he is the one most likely to go imo. The Red Sox don’t really have a first base replacement for Casas and I don’t think Devers is a good idea at first.
Sad.Sox 3
If the Sox are going to get a bonafide ace, 180+ innings, 180+ k’s, I would trade Duran, but only for a SP of that caliber.
Salvi
Bruin:
Anthony is going to CF not RF. Check his minor numbers. They are prepping him for CF. Duran moves to left or is traded.
As far as 1B goes, roster isnt complete. Sox should sign Christian Walker. Right-handed with power and an excellent glove. Devers shares time between 3B and DH after Yoshida gets traded. Team defense vastly improves and no loss of offense.
Bruin1012
Just because he has played mostly in center as long as Boston has Duran/Rafaela Anthony plays right field.
arty! Believes Jevon Belcher Quit on the Chiefs
Padres and Red Sox just make too much sense
Padres supposedly need to clear cap room
Red Sox need front line starter
Figure you can do
Red Sox get King or Cease and Arraez for a year
Padres get Casas, Yoshida, and prospects for taking Yoshidas 3 years left.
Red Sox get their front line starter, a lead off hitter at DH, and can move devers to 1B, and possibly pursue arenado at 3B.
Padres get a true Casas 1B, put cronenworth at 2B, Bogaerts at ss, get an immediate replacement at DH, and pick up some prospects for taking back Yoshida’s 3 years or something. Plus clear Ceases 14 mill if they go that route.
bighiggy
What about arenado, fedde and helsley for Casas, yoshida and a low level prospect?
davengmusic
Astros for Framber
1999 MLB All Star MVP
Casas, Rafaela, Crawford, Whitlock & Criswell for Skubal. Could that get it done?
william-2
no
1999 MLB All Star MVP
Who says no?
william-2
I do. You have to look at this trade realistically from the Tigers standpoint. Skubal is a fantastic cy young caliber pitcher under team control. There is no way to upgrade from him for Detroit. None. I like your trade from the Red Sox perspective, because we lose very little of practical value. Maybes and high hopes, but all of them are question marks with varying red flags.
Casas MAY be a great power hitter at some point, but he isn’t yet. Health has been a factor, and his speed and defense are near non-existent. Health, I see as not being a major drawback, but he has to play and put together a season worth of consistent success to be the lynch pin of any deal for one of the best pitchers in baseball.
Rafaela has zero plate discipline to the point of being basically a platooning glove guy. You would have to have faith he could drastically improve his approach to hitting. Not an easy feat.
Crawford is a back of the rotation pitcher. Nothing great, nothing terrible. If he is anything other than a 4 or 5 on your staff, you have issues.
I like Whitlock. but I rarely ever see Whitlock actually pitching, and Detroit doesn’t need him to not be healthy for them either. I wish him good health, because as a reliever he can thrive if healthy. As a starter he is possibly a number 4, or 5. They would be better served, like the Red Sox, viewing him as a reliever.
Criswell will most likely be a rotation depth piece, or number 5. Not too sexy.
Yaz'sOldBattingGloves
Trading Casas is stupid. Can we say Jeff Bagwell.
Casas could end up being as good a hitter as Soto if he can stay healthy.
1999 MLB All Star MVP
Casas has the potential to be a 40hr hitter and Rafaela has the potential to be a 5 tool player but the Red Sox need a number 1 starting pitcher yesterday. What would make a trade for Skubal a win win?
baseballguru
ABSOLUTELY NO DO NOT TRADE CASAS OR ANYMORE PLAYERS OR PROSPECTS NOT NAMED YOSHIDA. YOU HAVE 100 MILLION TO SPEND GO GET ANY FREE AGENT STARTER AND SCOTT. NO CASAS NO FARM NOBODY BUT CASH OUT THE DOOR AND A DRAFT SLOT IF THEY HAVE QOs attached who cares about QOs picks.
MLBTR needs to hire editors
There shouldn’t be any commas in “except, perhaps, for their pursuit of free agent superstar Juan Soto” unless you put “perhaps” at the end.
