Veteran catcher James McCann has received offers from at least four teams, MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo writes, and the Red Sox are one of the suitors checking in on the backstop’s services. McCann has spent the last two seasons with the Orioles, and while Baltimore had shown interest in a potential reunion, the club’s recent signing of Gary Sanchez likely closes that door.
Sanchez is one of many available catchers who have already found new teams, leaving the Sox in a bit of a scramble to address the position. Speaking with Cotillo and other reporters during the Winter Meetings, Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow noted simply that “there were more teams in need of catching than there were available catchers. That was the demographic that moved really, really quickly.”
Boston’s need is less glaring than most clubs, as the Red Sox are specifically looking for what Breslow described as “the right complement and right backup” for Connor Wong. McCann and Wong are both right-handed hitters, though manager Alex Cora downplayed hitting balance as less important than strong defense. This might not ideally fit McCann either, as Statcast’s metrics were particularly down on his overall defense in 2024, and a little mixed in general throughout his career.
A pair of strong seasons with the White Sox in 2019-20 lined McCann up to score a four-year, $40.6MM contract from the Mets during the 2020-21 offseason. Unfortunately, McCann’s hitting numbers tumbled in the aftermath of the signing, and the Mets then dealt him to the Orioles in December 2022 with New York eating the majority of McCann’s remaining salary. McCann hit only .228/.274/.382 in 459 PA and 134 games with the O’s over the last two seasons, but his ability to handle a bit more than just a backup’s share of catching duties allowed Baltimore extra flexibility in keeping Adley Rutschman’s bat in the lineup as a designated hitter.
smkelly1970
Sox have no need for another catcher. they’re doing just fine catching zzzzz’s at the winter meetings without McCann.
Fever Pitch Guy
The – While Breslow’s lack of experience is clearly a factor, the internal power struggle is one of their biggest obstacles.
Breslow should be running the show, but Cora is clockblocking him and that’s a real problem. Look at this recent quote from Breslow, he makes it quite clear that he has little power to do what he wants.
“We’re having a ton of conversations . . . we need to be aggressive. As we start to kind of envision a team in 2025 that’s capable of competing for the division and a deep postseason run, we need to be more willing to address short term needs, even if to some degree that comes at the expense of the future.”
So he knows what is being done wrong, he knows what needs to be done, and he’s appealing to Cora/Kennedy/etc to get on board. What a messed up situation.
It’s not a coincidence the past Red Sox success was under the helm of Larry and Dave, those two guys had the power and used it properly. Now it’s the exact opposite, Breslow is just a figurehead so it’s hard to criticize him. You think he wanted to extend Cora? That was all Henry and Kennedy.
letitbelowenstein
Fever, well isn’t the ultimate goal of ownership to move Cora in as the GM? That will be a horror show.
Fever Pitch Guy
let – Yes and yes, I try not to think about it. Hopefully by then John Henry will be forced out by Redbird.
Cora will become our Rubén Amaro Jr ….. obviously not a good thing.
acell10
fair point in general but the sox do need a backup catcher
DirtyWater04
Sure, but there’s no reason whatsoever that finding one ought to take priority over fixing the pitching staff or bringing in a RH power hitter to replace O’Neill.
deweybelongsinthehall
If they don’t want to start the Teal clock, a reunion with McGuire seems the best. Sometimes the warts of what you know are better than the unknown.
Sad.Sox 3
Dewey – you may be right that they are thinking about the fear of starting his clock.
But, this service time manipulation is just another tool the “Smartest Guy in the Room” uses to prove how smart he is. Depriving your team of putting the best product on the field now, to enjoy some benefit five years from now is actually pretty dumb.
avenger65
Dirty: Santander for O’Neill. Fair is fair.
DirtyWater04
I’d rather have Teoscar, but if it comes to that I could live with it.
all in the suit that you wear
The Red Sox have one catcher on the 40 man roster now. They need a catcher.
AL34
Interested? I’ll be glad when Breslow does something other than sign a relief pitcher who is done.
YourDreamGM
Hey! Finally! A Red Sox interested rumor that might be legit! Can totally see them getting this guy!
Ragnarok
McCann to the O’s for peanuts so the Mets could sign Omar Narvaez!
It was fun before Stearns got there.
TrillionaireTeamOperator
That Mets deal feels like eons ago, even though it wasn’t that long of a deal and only just concluded. I feel like he’s in line for a Gary Sanchez level deal, at best, but possibly less money than that- like 1 year/$4.05M or something.
Ragnarok
McCann wanted 2 years. I think if he was open to 1/$4MM he’d be an Oriole right now.
TrillionaireTeamOperator
“want” and “can get” are two very different things. I am sure every player looking at 1-2 year deals for $1M or $8M or even $40M would prefer a longer, more lucrative deal and hope they’ll get one.
Ragnarok
Market is pretty dried up on backup C. I think he may get it.
C Yards Jeff
I’m gonna miss him here in Baltimore. That 101 win season in 23 and the 90 plus wins last year were team efforts.
JM was right in the middle of it. True, crappy O stats but I swear the timing of his contributions dwarfed those of a guy like Mountcastle. Sneaky. Plus, declining D metrics were a given too. But and a big BUT, he had the ear of that pitching staff.
Again, gonna miss him here in Baltimore. Kudos to Boston for kicking the tires.
Goose
YAY!!!!! Red Sox are ‘interested’. I can’t wait to see how Sam Kennedy tells us they were in on everyone and didn’t sign anyone.
Fever Pitch Guy
Goose – Loomer nailed it in this tweet yesterday:
“You need to outbid Toronto and SF for Burnes. If they do that, they can trade for another arm and we can all breathe again. It can still work but you are threading a needle at this point. You miss on Burnes? Every team has leverage against you in a trade. You’re desperate”
DirtyWater04
No need to worry about it. Feinsand already reporting the Red Sox “appear hesitant” to pay what it will take to land Burnes and are preparing to pivot to Nick Pivetta. Who could’ve seen this coming, except for everyone on planet Earth?
I, for one, can’t wait to hear the spinjob on how bringing back Pivetta and adding nobody new “raises the ceiling”. That truckload of BS is going to be legendary.
Fever Pitch Guy
Dirty – No question Burnes will command a ridiculous contract after recent signings have inflated the SP market.
If the Red Sox were truly serious about signing an ace, they should have gone all out on Snell. Of the three he’s the most dominant, he’s the lefty the Sox desire, and he didn’t come with a QO hanging over him. Common sense says the last of the three pitchers to sign will have the most leverage.
I’m not forming an opinion on what will happen though, but yeah Burnes seems unlikely. I think the Sox are more likely to overpay in a trade than in a free agent signing.
deweybelongsinthehall
What they should do is issue an apology to the fans and cut tickets 50% for 25. Of course it won’t happen but it would be refreshing.
Fever Pitch Guy
dewey – Season ticket prices were already established last August, the renewal deadline is January 15. If they were to slash single game prices they’d probably have a lawsuit on their hands.
If the best they do is Flaherty and Pivetta, they will spin it as keeping their promise of improving the rotation. They can do that because they never provided the names of whom they planned to target.
DirtyWater04
Honestly, at the start of the offseason Burnes was probably the pitcher I was most nervous about of the big 3 free agent starters. But I was looking at his Fangraphs this morning and now I’m not so sure. Outside of his K and BB rates, not much has changed beyond his pitch usage.
His ground ball rate, hard hit rate, and swing rates the last couple years haven’t been drastically different from his more dominant seasons. He hasn’t lost any velocity. Spin rates are a little lower than peak but have been improving since ’22 and about equal with their ’21 values.. A little variance, sure, but nothing that make you think he’s changed or severely worsened as a pitcher. He’s just been throwing a lot more sliders, curveballs, and changeups. and per Statcast, they haven’t been as good as they used to be. and per Baseball Savant, it looks like in particular guys aren’t chasing his curveball or changeup as much as they used to, so he’s had to throw his cutter for strikes far more often which is probably why he’s been more hittable the last couple years.
So I’m coming around to the idea that Burnes may not be declining, but just needs to tweak some stuff with his location and pitch mix. If that’s the case, there’s no reason not to be “all in” on getting this dude to Boston.
Fever Pitch Guy
Dirty – Yeah I feel the same way. I was a bit concerned when he was getting hammered last August, but he rebounded nicely and seems to be healthy. The results (ERA, WHIP, etc) have been there for 5 straight years and the IP has been solid for 3 straight, so the Sox should break the bank for him.
Also it’s a huge help that seemingly SF, LAD and NYY are out of the mix on him … but the Mets are always lurking.
C Yards Jeff
He’s a pitcher not a thrower. Also, stays within himself. IE hard to rattle. And his small injury footprint does not include forearm or elbow issues. Im thinking the bidding level for his services has passed by the Orioles.
It was fun watching him here in Baltimore. As he gets older and velocity drops, I’d be surprised if he didnt continue to perform at TOR level.
DirtyWater04
You’re spot on Jeff. Even with the slip in some of the periphery results last year his top line results were still fantastic. Sometimes that can be luck, but if you evaluate the whole picture and watch him pitch, I see a guy who knows how to work within his stuff and is just generally a quality, mentally tough and physically durable pitcher. A guy like that would always be welcome in my starting 5.
letitbelowenstein
Probably be outbid by Pittsburgh. Then Breslow explains that they made the effort and John Henry will say the fans are demanding too much.
Pedro Martinez’s Mango Tree
“Baseball players are expensive”
MacGromit
@Pedro
Not for Steve Cohen, they aren’t. Cost is the same, the feel of its impact is like a tip to the valet.
Fever Pitch Guy
Mac – Same could be said for the Yankees and Dodgers, among others.
As Kanye would say, John Henry doesn’t care about winning. He doesn’t care about fans.
Pedro Martinez’s Mango Tree
Mac: that was something John Henry said at one of the winter fan fests a couple years ago
deweybelongsinthehall
it nothing changes, everyone with opening day tickets should be a no show. Imagine a statement of an empty Fenway!
Fever Pitch Guy
dewey – That will never happen though. The past several years there were several thousand unsold seats just a couple days prior to the Home Opener. Those tickets were then sold at huge discounts on the secondary market or donated to youth groups. No matter what, Opening Day will always have a “sellout” without actually selling all the seats at original face value.
Sagacity
How smart is your front office wanting to sign a back-up catcher for a back-up catcher while the catcher of the future sits in AAA just waiting to prove his hitting issues late last year have been fixed.
Seriously, can this front office be any worse?
The team needs pitching and Breslow is futzing with a back-up catcher when it’s not needed or could be gotten half way through spring training.
They can’t get Arenado because he wants to move to 1B so he fits in with the SD line-up and he’s maybe the greatest 3B all-time and clearly better than Manny Machado. In the meantime, the Butcher of Boston wants to move to 1B and can’t see that he has absolutely no fielding skills.
Can this get more screwed up?
avenger65
Sagacity: Not being as close to Boston as you, I wonder what would be wrong about Devers at 1B and Arenado at 3B? Who else do they have to play third if Devers moves? Just asking.
Fever Pitch Guy
Sag – The problem is the front office left the Red Sox with very little catching depth.
They have only TWO catchers on their 40-man roster right now, Wong and Gasper. You can’t possibly want to go into the season with Gasper as the only backup in case Teel struggles or there’s an injury to Wong or Teel.
There’s plenty to criticize, but trying to get some catching depth is not one of them! LOL!!
william-2
This is a useless and unneeded move. Just bring up Teel and let him play. He won’t do any worse at the plate, but you may get better, at league minimum.
rsoxbob
Yes.
acell10
I’d rather they not rush a guy who’s only had 22 games at AAA to bigs in one of the most important defensive positions
william-2
Me too, but I would rather we bring him up and see how it works and get him the exp than do this type of useless move.
At least Teel will either succeed or struggle but learn what he needs to work on, and that is just as valuable. Because of the true platoon involved if they bring him up you don’t have to worry about him not getting work in. If he thrives you have a MLB starting catcher, if not he will be roughly what nearly MLB backup catcher is.
acell10
I’d rather he be real for the call up instead of rushing for the heck of it. When he’s ready he’ll get called up but I would rather see how he looks after a full spring training a few more games than to just drop him in without being ready
william-2
Sure, it is assumed he will be at spring training competing with whatever is there or it would be negligence on the Sox part. If he shows anything though, you have to go with him. This isn’t worth wasting any off season time or money on at this point.
Wait off on signing another catcher till spring training is closing if Teel fails. It is for a backup and that can be any glove first guy since they all hit about .220 anyway. We have far bigger issues.
all in the suit that you wear
I don’t think it is negligence if they want Teel to have more than a month at AAA before they expect him to compete for the back up catcher job. AAA is a development level. I think they should sign a catcher now. If they wait until spring training, the better catchers will be gone.
acell10
or even the serviceable catchers will be gone at that point
william-2
You are looking at a field of backups as options. They will not be looking for an everyday catcher if Wong is on the team. He is the default everyday guy unless you are looking to really upgrade. If it is just a backup, then why bother for any other reason than depth? If it is for depth, why bother with anyone that is worth any money? In your scenario, you’re talking about spring training and a month, so again, why bother? See if he makes team, and if not sign a glove first guy to catch once a week, because who gives a crap
all in the suit that you wear
I think most of the glove-first catchers will be signed before spring training. I also don’t think it is a good approach to say who gives a crap about the back up catcher because Wong is not guaranteed to stay healthy all year like all players.
william-2
When the options are going to be .230 hitters with not much power to offer, it is simply about the glove. So yeah, (insert name) if they have a good glove, I do not give a crap.
You are saying they will all be gone from free agency come end of spring training? Possible, although some teams will be designating some of those same types of glove only catchers at the end of spring training. There are always a couple. I just know we have a good glove and throw catcher at the moment on the cusp in AAA that we are just waiting to see if he hits MLB pitching, because he hits everywhere else.
I just read the Crochet trade rumor. This explains it. I wouldn’t part with Teel, but this at least explains why they would be willing to bring in a guy like McCann. They know they are losing the better option to upgrade the pitching.
Bob Sacamano 310
Dude was like Giolito’s personal catcher for a year or two on Sox.
avenger65
Bob: He caught everyone on the staff. Unfortunately Mr. Passed Ball, grandal, caught everyone, too.
Bob Sacamano 310
He did better with Giolito. And it stayed that way when they brought in Grandal

Tom McCann, the Sketchers of the 60’s.
Red Sox don’t need cheap shoes. Come on.
spitball
Breslow is not going to get a couple free years to make good! Fans are tired of this crap. Great at reading the market after it has passed you by! The only way to sign a free agent is to be willing to either meet their price, or pay more than 29 other teams. Look at Friedman! Most of the work is done. RedSox are left to fight over scraps. The initials C.B. Are not the only thing last 2 Biston POBs have in common!
avenger65
McCann will always be one of my favorite players from his time with the White Sox. He was mistakenly used as a backup to grandall, but still caught Giolito’s no-hitter and played more games than grandall. A backup isn’t usually the best hitter on the team, otherwise he would be a starter. I’d love to see him go to Boston. He has experience catching Giolito, Hendriks and, hopefully, Cease.
ibuititnoonecame
Uh same old John Henry… they have ruined the brand, and they just don’t understand they have to overpay now to sign people…. John lost the heart for this.
Fever Pitch Guy
ibuit – He’s 75 years old now, has 8 championship rings, never had an attachment to Boston or the Red Sox (grew up a Cardinals fan), and owns several FSG entities that he didn’t own 20 years ago.
So in a way, I can understand why he doesn’t give a damn about winning. It’s too bad he won’t step aside and have someone like a young Larry or Dave running the show. There is nothing worse than an owner calling the shots who doesn’t care about winning.
Oh and to those who believed Theo’s return meant a return to the big spending of the early 2000’s ….. HAHAHAHA!!!
Indianfan
How about doing stories only on players the Red Sox are NOT interested in?
