December 10: The Orioles officially announced Sanchez’s signing this afternoon.
December 7: The Orioles have agreed to a one-year deal with catcher Gary Sanchez, according to a report from Jon Heyman of The New York Post, who adds that the deal guarantees Sanchez $8.5MM. Sanchez is represented by MDR Sports Management.
Sanchez, who celebrated his 32nd birthday earlier this week, returns to the AL East after spending the first seven seasons of his MLB career with the Yankees. The first few years of his career saw him establish himself as one of the better offensive catchers in baseball with a .246/.328/.518 slash line in 327 games through the end of the 2019 season. In that time, he made two All-Star games and clobbered 105 home runs in 1576 plate appearances. That 30-to-35 homer power helped to make up for Sanchez’s middling defense behind the plate, but things took a turn for the worse when he started to struggle on offense. After striking out at a 24.1% clip through the end of the 2019 season, his 2020-22 seasons saw that rate tick up to 29.5%. Meanwhile, Sanchez’s home run power began to suffer as he hit just 49 homers in 294 games. This period even saw his defense drop from roughly average to nearly unplayable, including a -12 figure in Statcast’s catcher defense metric during the 2021 season.
These struggles led the Yankees to trade Sanchez to the Twins prior to the 2022 season, where he continued to struggle at the plate but managed to bounce back a bit on defense. Sanchez then entered free agency but did not find a deal before the 2022 season began. He eventually signed with the Mets during the season but lasted just three games on the club’s roster before spending the rest of the season in a Padres uniform. With San Diego, Sanchez managed to bounce back and flash some of the power he had shown during his Yankees days, slashing .218/.292/.500 with 19 homers in just 260 plate appearances and a 114 wRC+. That earned Sanchez a guranteed deal in Milwaukee this past season, where he served as a back up for William Contreras at catcher and occasionally found his way into the first base/DH mix as well.
Since leaving the Bronx, Sanchez has generally had the look of a solid if unspectacular catching option. In that time, he’s slashed .212/.291/.412 with a 96 wRC+ that’s more or less in line with his production for the Brewers last year, and he’s done so while providing the roughly average defense he offered early in is career. That’s enough to make him a quality back up catching option for virtually any team, and he’ll take over the role vacated by James McCann when he elected free agency last month as Adley Rutschman’s partner in the Orioles catching tandem. In addition to sharing catching duties, Sanchez can also serve a secondary role of helping improve the club’s offense against left-handed pitching by providing a righty-swinging alternative to Ryan O’Hearn at DH on days where he isn’t filling in for Rutschman behind the plate. That makes Sanchez the second player the club has added today who could provide a boost to their offense against southpaws, joining Tyler O’Neill who agreed to a three-year deal with the Orioles earlier today.
While the Orioles had internal options to serve as their secondary catcher behind Rutschman such as Rene Pinto and Blake Hunt, the club made clear in recent weeks that they hoped to add a more established player to that mix. That included a reported interest in reunion with James McCann, but reports seemed to indicate that McCann could look to find a multi-year deal in free agency while the Orioles were hoping to find a one-year arrangement given the presence of top catching prospect Samuel Basallo in their minor league system. To find a quality player willing to accept a one-year deal and a back-up job that won’t guarantee regular playing time, it seems as though Baltimore may have had to go over the top to land Sanchez; his one-year, $8.5MM guarantee matches the guarantee Danny Jansen landed from the Rays yesterday to serve as their regular starter behind the plate and far exceeds the $3MM guarantee he received from the Brewers last year.
That willingness to stretch financially in order to land the right fit for their roster is a luxury GM Mike Elias and his front office haven’t had in previous winters, when the Angelos family owned the team. New owner David Rubenstein has given the club the ability to expand payroll significantly, however, and the Orioles now project to open the 2025 season with a $122MM payroll according to RosterResource. It seems reasonable to expect that the club’s payroll could continue to climb from here as well, with Baltimore seemingly poised to turn their attention to the starting pitching market where they’ve been connected to Jack Flaherty and Nathan Eovaldi if they aren’t able to retain ace Corbin Burnes. As for the catching market, Sanchez joins Austin Hedges, Jacob Stallings, Kyle Higashioka, and Jansen in having already come off the board in what’s been the fastest-moving part of the positional market this winter. A few quality options remain available, however, including Carson Kelly and Elias Diaz.
Backup catcher/dh sometimes? Mahalo
7 years/$238M
238 years/$7M
He pays them $238M a year for 7 years to play for them.
Hope he gave himself a buyout.
Name sounds familiar..
Nice. Gary can pop a few bombs and undoubtedly will haunt the Yankees in a big game.
More likely to contribute to my Yankees’ cause with some passed balls lol
Great move. When Dave Dombrowski wakes up tomorrow at 4am he will see all these moves. Then he will goto the country club, have some drinks and be in bed by 4pm.
Tyler O’Neill would have been a sensible move for the Phillies.
Yeah, DD missed out on Gary Sanchez.
I don’t know if Sanchez is an upgrade over McCann or not but hey congrats I guess.
Probably power wise. Leadership/chemistry was solid with McCann. That remains to be seen I guess.
Sounds like my day, tomorrow. Except for the country club part.
Dumbo!
Kinda of weird signing. Thought they would get a defensive type to allow Adley DH more
Samuel Basllio is likely up at some point this year too, and he’s not a glove first guy either. Agree, thought it’d be a more defensive player. I guess the Orioles really hate LHP and are over correcting, I dunno.
Adley did not prove to be worthy of DH to be honest. He looked horrible in the 2nd half. He hits better when he DHs but he needs to figure it out while catching so Mayo and Kjerstad can get more opportunities to flourish. Plus I hate the thought of losing the DH spot. Catchers should not DH when you have the offensive options the O’s have.
True, for the first time in his career, Adley looked lost. I’m sure he’s never been in such a funk in his life. It’s no coincidence that as Adley goes, so does the line-up. Adley and Jordan Westberg are the best AB’s in the lineup and having one get in a never-before-seen funk, and Westy getting dinged, the lineup had way too much swing and miss w/o those guys. (And Ramon Urias stepped up and became a Westy-like hitter in the second half…but he wasn’t enough).
It’s true as a ‘rule’, catchers shouldn’t be in the DH. The exception to that rule is when the catcher is an all star hitter and former 1-1 draft pick. I hope by next year Adley and Samuel are DHing/catching everyday. (Adley has an absurd amount of PA’s for a catcher, second only to Salvy Perez…because they hit).
Adley’s second half was an exception, not the norm of his professional career. I’m going to call it an anomaly until I see otherwise. He should be back to great AB’s from here forward.
The other guys will be fine. Pencil me in as a Heston hits 40 bombs in 2025 guy.
Don’t disagree with anything there. However, I would like both of the catchers to learn 1B. If they both trade off a little there with Mayo, that would be ideal in 2026. You don’t lose the DH spot that way. Granted it’s rare that would happen, but I would prefer to not see it in big games and the playoffs
I think Adley played dinged up. Didn’t complain plus the Os let him play through it. Oh, by the way, Orioles cut ties with their trainer. Hmm.
He had back issues and said he needed to get his body “right”. I’m chalking all this up to that. Hope I’m right lol.
They all play banged up and they repeatedly said there wasn’t anything of note. I think it has way more to do with his approach and swing mechanics. He popped up so many balls this year it wasn’t even funny. So unless his back or something else hindered him from his old swing and approach, then…
He was a mess at the plate by late July; swinging at obvious balls (when he never did before), and his lower half seemed dead/forgotten/injured. His approach and technique all went away. Pressing, pressure, injury, I dunno, but it wasn’t the guy of the 3 previous seasons. It was definitely not a single thing, rather a bunch of things outta sorts.
I’m sure it is just an outlier, for reasons we can’t/won’t know. But yucky to watch.
This is bad. Really bad.
Especially if James McCann leaves (and apparently that’s why they did this).
They’re constantly giving up defense and smart players.
MLB changes almost as fast as a political race.
Everything I loved about that team in 22-23 is being systematically phased out.
Looks like the ALE is now open for the Rays and Red Sox in 2025.
Or he could platoon dh with ohearn.
Constantly? Really? Where does this stuff come from?
My guess is “thin air”. Dude is so hysterical that he wrote “Looks like the ALE is now open for the Rays and Red Sox in 2025” based off of a one year deal for Gary Sanchez.
Seriously, talk about an overreaction. Sanchez isn’t my ideal backup but he’s an improvement over auto-out McCann. McCann will always be a Baltimore legend for playing with a broken face for the good of the team but his utter inability to hit requires looking elsewhere. I’m optimistic Sanchez can contribute to the team without having to first break his face.
I’ll have a swig of that ale, matey!
Too close to the ledge here over a backup catcher. I think Sanchez is a fine move for the role they want him in. Damn fine like twin peaks cherry pie. And tony taters was not much on defense, had a low .obp, and was prone to extended slumps. I think O’Neill/Kjeratad duo will outperform his numbers. Where else are they constantly giving up smart players and defense? They did DFA Thaddeus the other day but I think he just has a smart sounding name. Let me know what I’m missing??
He deeply misses Austin Hays. The latest moves are just more trauma on top of the original blow of losing Austin Hays.
What in the world are you talking about. Instead of whining about Sanchez, you could have looked up just how “good” McCann actually was (or hint: wasn’t) before you typed out this rant.
took your advice and looked them up and found if they played the same amount of games Mccann probably would have better counting statistic and had a higher ops+ than sanchez. Roughly 20 game difference and sanchez had 4 more hits 3 hr and 4 more rbis.
Also some use it but war from mccann was 0.7 and sanchez was 0.2
He said defense and there’s this notion that McCann is a good defender and he’s not according to Savant. He doesn’t rate that well other than his arm. Same with Sanchez. They both work ok with pitchers. McCann hit ok down the stretch but overall wasn’t anything special as we all know. They’re very comparable is my point so freaking out over a back up catcher is non sense. Sanchez has a higher ceiling and was ok with a 1 year deal
Orioles spending money!!
Jon Heyman with the big scoop
Like the signing. O’s Adding
He’s on a plane to Toronto right now.
Why? Why is this guy still in the league? For real. A few homers, so what, he’s atrocious at the rest of the game.
DH
Frames average. Much better at game calling and prep since his ny days. Above average bat for a catcher with possibility of being better for 1 year at least.
@ilove
Would it completely shock your narrative if you looked at his dWar over the last four years? It’s a net +6 War at C.
He ranks 28th in framing since 2022 (post Yankees debacle). 28th in DEF, 17th in DRS, 23rd in FRV and 39th in rCERA.
The definition of backup catcher.
@canton
I’m not a stat geek. I use them to compare with my own opinion. They have him as a plus defWar of 6 over the last 3 years with last year being the only negative at -3. So (Kanye shrug ).
KnicksFanCavsFan;
Cut it with the silly stats……
A catchers main job is to handle a pitching staff and call a game. Then comes D. He wasn’t terribly good at that. He was an offensive catcher.
Last year with the Brewers he had totally changed. I couldn’t believe it was the same guy. Balanced behind the plate. Strong fundamentals. Controlled the game. A backup to William Contreras. But……
The Brewers have been known for squaring away catchers. I believe Charlie Greene is the guru. If you look at the Brewers catchers the past 5-6 years you see that Victor Caratini, Omar Narváez, Pedro Severino, Manny Piña, Yasmani Grandal all became noticeably better catchers when playing for the Brewers. However, upon leaving and playing for other teams they mostly reverted to the way they played before Dr. Greene got a hold of them. And there have been posters that were fans of those teams that came on this chartroom board and complained about how they were hurting the pitching staff and that team.
The problem with the O’s the last 2 years in the playoffs was offense, not pitching. So it’s nice in theory to add a RH bat. But for years now Gary Sanchez hasn’t been an offensive masher.
James McCann did a lot to hold that pitching staff together in 2024, through what appears to be a number of injures that Ashley had. He’s a respected gamer and team leader. The day the O’s got him I wrote on here that the O’s robbed the Mets – especially when Cohen paid a good portion of his salary. Was/is probably he best backup/shared catcher in MLB. The Nats might do well to sign him and share the role with Keibert Ruiz, who seems to be overworked while the Nats pitching staff isn’t progressing. Veteran team leaders on young teams are invaluable.
Nevertheless, the O’s continue to compromise defense and fundamentals. I stand by what I wrote under another article: Think the O’s will pull back in 2025 as the team is playing prospects. Doesn’t matter who they get as an ace pitcher. MLB is a bullpen game now. A starting pitcher that stays healthy will cover 160-170 inning in the regular season. The pitching staff has to cover 1,400-plus. They need a quality catcher behind the plate, and if he hits .050 it doesn’t matter. There is a reason that catchers make the best managers…..and Brandon Hyde was a catcher.
Sammy, the Sanchize was more than suitable as a C in SD. His offense was nice and his defense was surprisingly good (I was witness to some of his tragic receiving games in NYY); if not good, then definitely “adequate” for a backup C. This is a great signing for BAL and I surmise Gary will have a decent and fun year!
He’s in the league as a backup catcher… This place is funny this evening
He actually caught good last year in limited time with Milwaukee. Their pitchers commended him for his framing of pitches.
8.5M Waste of Money
I would have rather seen McCann back but I’m assuming he’s looking for a multi year deal and the Orioles are just interested in a one season stop gap at the moment.
Your reading comprehension is outstanding.
And you clearly don’t understand that these posts are constantly updated and start off with basic information and then say “more to come” and get edited several times. Move along, troll
Another backup catcher off the board.
How much do you think Diaz would cost
Good question considering what Sanchez got. 10 million?
The closer you get to spring training, the more the price drops.
Rangers did so good
$8.5M for a backup catcher? Woof
I was gonna come back with the D’Arnaud signing, but that was 12/2.. Definitely prices going up across the board.
small market teams are probably panicking now, won’t be able to afford to do anything
This is a small market team I would not expect to sign a deal like this. I guess it’s possible he’s in the lineup more regularly against lefties for O’Hearn
That is a very substantial salary for Sanchez, but he kinda earned it? The going rates have certainly gone up across the board at every level of player and position.
Catching is an especially barren market this winter.
O’s adding a lot of thump and a whole lot of swing and miss tonight
That’s true…against LHP even more so.
I’m glad Chris Sale isn’t in the division. (Smirk)
Chicks dig the long ball 😉
Meh. Sanchez is exactly the type of backup catcher you want. He can win you some close games with the lumber.
After last offseason’s weak FA market (minus ohtani), I’m surprised at this bull FA market. 8 + for a backup C, wow. I was hoping jays would sign him for half that
That’ll do just fine too
Come on down the ol’ Sanchies, we got all the Ol’ Bay you need in Baltimore!
It’s good to see the Kraken still finding work. I expected him at Home Depot by now
@mlb
If I were born after 1995 I would think you’re a racist. . I’m fine you the benefit of a doubt.
“Born after 1995”..Racists generally think everyone else is “racist”.
Not gonna lie…I like this signing, along with the O’Neil deal. Now lets add a frontline starter, and I’ll be happy.
Bring in the fences in left, sign two righty power hitters.
Baltimore cutting checks tonight.
“That 30-to-35 homer power helped to make up for Sanchez’s middling defense… (same paragraph) Meanwhile, Sanchez’s home run power began to suffer as he hit just 49 homers in 294 games.”
30-35 hr power = good.
49 homers in 294 games = bad
49 homers / 294 games = 32 homers per year pace
Wut?
The Sanchize is coming back to the AL East! Nice bat and backup catcher to go with Adley.
I’m pretty happy the Rays managed to nab Jensen if he and Sanchez basically cost the same. Higashioka would have been ideal but I’m overall happy. Jensen’s worst year is still better than Jackson’s best year.
Options are thinning out for Padres; please don’t call up 15 year old Ethan Salas to catch for 40year old Yu Darvish
I sense some *slight* exaggerations going on around these here parts…
Dodgers vs Orioles in the world series. Dodgers in 4.
Padres can have Trevino for a catcher. Let’s make a deal
LMFAO.
That, I believe, requires the O’s to win a playoff game.
Seems like an overpay for a guy no better or worse than McCann. Waiting for the Freid signing!!!!
Mike Elias definitely seems to be enjoying his newfound financial freedom under David Rubenstein’s ownership regime:
Lefty masher OF? Check.
Backup C? Check.
TOR SP? Coming soon…
Feels good, man.
I’d pump the brakes until the big name pitcher is signed. We signed Sanchez & O’Neill.
I’m thinking we get Eovaldi instead of a fried/Burnes at the moment.
Eovaldi would be within the parameters of what I would consider a TOR SP for our purposes here.
Just a good, solid SP that immediately slots into the top 3 with Eflin and Grayson.
I’m fine with that also.
Hoping the work with Trevor Rogers unlocks what Elias saw in him. Looks like they’re working on a cutter and improving his lower body strength. Let’s hope that was a deal that only looked stupid for a couple months.
And a hopefully successful mid-summer return from Brandish and Wells. I’ll take that into October. Eovaldi would be the vet we need. Grayson takes another step forward this year. Eflin will be solid. Deano a good backend. Povich, Rogers, Suarez will be around too. Obviously a Fried or bringing back Burnes is best, but they could make it work with Eovaldi and one more stud for the BP.
Trevor should schedule his TJ surgery now…
Congratulations! I hope you guys get Fried or Burnes, Orioles fans deserve it!
These are the sort of pickups that the O’s would generally make in any year, but the money they’re throwing at them is not very Angelos-ish. Certainly a good sign.
A vet that can help out against the left handed folks that give them troubles, and only 1 year, so if he bombs badly, ok, at least he’s not eating up cash after next season….. and he fills the gap until Samuel is up….. both of today’s inkings were very nice IMO
$8.5MM is more than I thought Sanchez would go for coming off an OK season.
Catching market was thin. James McCann will probably get himself a 2 year deal somewhere.
Orioles replacing Santander and McCann today with some very Santanderish and McCanny replacements. Now we need a Burnes replacement.
O’s made room for 3 players on the 40 man. Who else is coming?
#ForeverGiant Gary Sanchez
Orioles showing Red Sox how you do it.
And the Yankees?!?! Do nothing…
Yankees and Cashman can’t Multitask. It’s Soto or nothing right now.
Both Sanchez and Jansen scored the same one year deal? Seems that the Rays got more value solely based on age and defense alone.
Very solid move. I was hoping for McCann. I am glad they got a Spanish speaking catcher. One year deal too. Give it a solid B.
McCann wants a multi year deal and really the backup need is 1 year – the Sanchez signing makes sense.
The Orioles figure they’re losing Santander, the O’Neill signing makes sense. Sure there’s injury risk there.
So far, making sense. Starting pitching also makes sense….
