Josh Bell is heading back to Washington, as the New York Post’s Jon Heyman reports that the first baseman has signed a one-year, $6MM deal with the Nationals. The 32-year-old Bell is represented by the Boras Corporation.
Since Nathaniel Lowe was just acquired last week to be the Nats’ new everyday first baseman, Bell likely now slots in as the first-choice designated hitter. Both the left-handed hitting Lowe and the switch-hitting Bell have pretty even career splits, but Bell could step in at first base every once in a while when Washington faces a left-handed pitcher, even though Lowe is a much better fielder. As the DH, Bell’s switch-hitting bat also brings a bit more balance to a Nationals lineup that is heavy on lefty swingers.
In a career defined by major hot and cold streaks, Bell’s previous stint in D.C. stands out as perhaps the most consistent stretch of his nine MLB seasons. The Nationals acquired Bell from the Pirates during the 2020-21 offseason, and Bell proceeded to hit .278/.363/.483 with 41 homers over 1005 plate appearances from Opening Day 2021 until he was dealt to the Padres as part of the Juan Soto blockbuster at the 2022 trade deadline.
Unfortunately for Bell and the Padres, his bat went cold after the deal, though his overall offensive output was enough for him to earn NL Silver Slugger honors for the DH position. It also led to a two-year, $33MM contract with the Guardians that winter, but Bell didn’t hit particularly well in his first four months in Cleveland before he was again dealt at the deadline, which sparked another hot streak as he helped lead the Marlins to a playoff berth.
The pattern continued at last July’s deadline, as Bell again found himself on the move from the Marlins to the Diamondbacks. Bell had hit only .239/.305/.394 in 441 PA for Miami last year, but his bat again came to life post-trade, as he hit .279/.361/.436 in 162 PA for an Arizona team that had temporarily lost starting first baseman Christian Walker to the injured list.
The short-term nature of this latest contract leaves open the possibility that Bell could be dealt at his fourth consecutive trade deadline if the Nationals aren’t in contention. While Lowe is under arbitration control through the 2026 season, Bell and fellow free agent Michael Soroka were both inked to one-year deals, as the Nationals seem to be somewhat hedging their bets on their readiness to compete in 2025. The Nats have struggled through five straight losing seasons since their World Series victory in 2019, yet with many members of their young core now in the big leagues, there was speculation Washington might be a little more aggressive this winter in firmly announcing the end of its rebuild.
This being said, Bell’s signing is certainly a boost for a Nationals club that had trouble producing offense last year, particularly in the power department. The Nats’ 135 home runs ranked 29th of 30 teams, and CJ Abrams (with 20 homers) was the only D.C. player who went yard more often than Bell (19 homers) did in 2024.
With Bell and Lowe in the fold, expected improvement from Abrams and Luis Garcia Jr., and a full season from top prospects James Wood and Dylan Crews, there is plenty of reason to think the Nats can be a much more productive lineup. If everything clicks and the team’s young pitching also takes a step forward, the Nationals might well get back to winning baseball next year, and then perhaps start spending on bigger-name talent next offseason.
Bell’s career walk and strikeout rates have consistently been above average, while his barrel rates have been more spotty. His hard-hit ball rate dropped to 40.1% last season, slightly below the league average and his lowest mark since the 2018 season. While there isn’t much sign of decline at age 32, per se, the big question about Bell is simply which version of the slugger is going to show up, given how his production has swung back and forth so sharply over the last few seasons.
Now that Bell is signed, third base remains a target area for Washington, as the team’s attempt to get Gleyber Torres to change positions from second base fell on deaf ears. The bullpen remains a clear area of need, and there’s still plenty of time in the offseason for the Nationals to add a bigger name than Soroka as more of a clear-cut upgrade to the rotation.
Ding dong!
Who’s there?
.278 hitter. Decent fielder. Yankees sure could have used Bell a 1B. But the Yankees really want a .220 hitting below average fielder that’s on his decline. Someone like Belly that married a hooker lol or Goldy that can’t bend down for grounders. Any 1st basemen on the market come to mind? Or someone that’s terrible that the Yankees can make a sub par 1B…
Josh Bell is arguably the worst fielding player ever rostered on MLB club.
Even with his decline, Goldschmidt still hit .245 last year (with a wRC+ of 100) and has never hit as low as .220.
Meanwhile, Bell hit .249 (NOT .278) with a barely better 101 wRC+ and even worse defense (NOT “decent” at all).
Dick Stuart is the “standard” for that.
You have apparently never watched him play. He gets a bad rap as a fielder. I don’t even care what the metrics say — I watched him his entire time in DC. He is underrated as a defender. That is to say, as a big lumbering guy, he makes all the expected routine plays and he occasionally will surprise making exceptional plays. No, he is not a slick-fielding 1B, but he isn’t the clod people assume him to be. But luckily, Nate Lowe will be doing most of the defensive work. If Josh hits, he is worth having around.
AKA, “Clank.”
Hello
Hello who?
Josh Bell, ringer of the door bell.
The KGB waits for no one!
Ring-a-Ling Ding Dong!
Ringy-Ding-Ding !
Saved by the Bell
Wait the Jays were all in on him right?
I thought Boston was. But not San Diego.
Imagine that, a Boras client signs and Heyman is first to report it, again and again. I just wonder what rumors he floats to help Boras in exchange for the info on guys signing.
Heyman is the Boras hype man.
Good for Heyman. It ain’t harming anyone. No owner or gm gives a it what your client is asking or what extension they turned down or who’s interested. You’ll get what I am willing to pay and that’s it.
Being a Heyman guy worked pretty well for Lesnar
Brock Lesnar played baseball?
Question posed to a username of “tigerlovecinnamon,” is a bit silly, I know.
My name is Jon Heyman and I am the advocate for the reigning, defending, undisputed heavyweight agent of MLB, Scott Boras!
If Scott doesn’t fit the moniker of “Super Agent” I don’t know who would. Is there anybody like Scott who the big stars in the NBA or NFL flock to in free agency??
Could do worse than Bell
Thought the Giants should have considered him.
LMJ is much better than bell. Decent at first, and a great obp guy
Serenity now!!!!
it’s a Festivus Miracle!
He just liked ringing that bell!
“Because I’m good enough, smart enough, and gosh darn it, people like me!!”
No Alonso for you!
Once they traded for Lowe they were out on Alonso regardless I would think.
With the codicil that Alonso isn’t a 1Bman.
“codicil” is a five dollar word indeed, good job Jack +1. (Might it have anything to do with a codpiece?)
They were never in for Alonso from the getgo!
Honestly, for where they are, and picking where they are, I wouldn’t want to give up a high second and fifth for any of these 30 something first basemen that rejected the QO.
Come back one year!
Just traded for Lowe. Now they sign Bell.
All the first baseman belong to the Nats.
Bell will be their DH I guess.
If you’ve seen Bell play first base, you wouldn’t need to guess. He’s about as smooth as sandpaper.
I watched him during his first go round with the Nats. Lowe is a gold glover so it goes without saying he will start there.
Anthony Rizzo has entered the chat!
I feel like Rizzo will end up in either Seattle or San Diego (though i will give KC and Minnesota as potential dark horses)
I feel like Rizzo will be without a chair when the music stops.
Washington – the Bell toils for thee.
Why do I feel disappointed every time a crappy free agent signs? I don’t know if I can take another summer of watching Wil Benson strike out three times in each game.
Right there with you. Funny it is the crappy ones even discounting the bigger ones. Either way, nada.
#SelltheteamBob
Belongs: Therefore, send not to know for whom the Bell TOLLS, it TOLLS for thee.
It wasn’t much TOIL to look that up.
For whom the bell tolls!
Do you think Jerry lost his phone?
Stanton stopped paying the T-Mobile bill. Looks like it’s Raley/Locklear or bust.
Mostly bust.
That rattling sound you hear are the Mariners’ two pennies clinking against each other in Stanton’s coin purse…
Good for him. I hope he has a nice bounce back year.
6 million isnt squat can’t go too wrong here. I thought the Nationals were going to try to be a legit contender this offseason but instead they are doing these 1 year deals. I don’t hate it but I thought they were going to step up and make some big moves.
What expensive signings and trades should they have out bid on?
Alonso made a lot of sense for them before the Lowe trade and Bell signing. A top end pitcher is a need.
If Alonso was a Nat they would have traded him when he turned down the extension. His 200m asking price was ridiculous. Turned down 3 90 with opt outs. He isn’t being reasonable. Nats and many other teams moved on.
Pitching has been really expensive. I wouldn’t blame them for not paying those prices. Wait it out and get some #4s maybe a weak #3. They aren’t a dream destination so they need to significantly beat any other offers from good destinations.
Giving Pete 200m or trading a reliever? Easy choice.
Someone is going to sign Alonso. It could have been the Nationals.
They need better pitching to compete.
Nobody is giving Alonso 200 million.
No need to sign him when you can just trade a reliever for a 1b. Lots of free agent relievers still available. You can’t wait on Pete Boras. Lowe much better move.
Nats aren’t supposed to compete for the better pitching. NY LA etc lots of teams with better tv deals than Nats get the better pitching. When the Nats do get the better pitching they trade it to NY LA before free agency to hopefully get the next crop of better pitching. Ted dead. Buying pitching days might be over.
I think I speak for most Nats fans: Glad we did not sign Alonso.
He avoids the IL looking at his high games played each season. Not a big price for reliable okay bat.
A sub-replacement level DH now three years removed from his last useful season. And for $6m?
Surprised he didn’t get the Jesse Winker 1/2m special.
Rizzo is the other 1B available, well low-cost at least. Really wouldn’t mind Rizzo coming to the White Sox on a one-year deal and get him flipped at the deadline.
Rizzo’s agent: “Anthony, how would you like to go back to Chicago?”
Anthony Rizzo: “The Cubs want me back?”
Rizzo’s agent: “No, it’s the White Sox”
Anthony Rizzo: “Any offers from Japan…”
Rsox,
That legitimately made laugh out loud so thank you for that haha!
Sadly, that’s probably how that plays out lol
And Connor joe.
@Jack
I wouldn’t poo poo on a such hitter giving you 20 hrs and a .725 OPS. Considering how most of the better bats are spread out on the other positions, he’s likely going to be as top 10 DH next year.
Yeah, the bat is decent, and if he almost always plays DH, it’s not like he’ll actually be hurting the team much on defense.
It’s just not the kind of signing you want to see for a team trying to get back into contention.
Dbacks gave you the road map on how to use Bell.
Don’t play him everyday. 120 OPS+ fits into a lot of lineups on a part time basis.
That’s trumpspeak. He signed for 2 million.
Bell’s 162-game average for each of the past three seasons (’22-’24): .254/21/78. It doesn’t match his best years, but those are productive numbers.
Another chance lost for Alonso. His market is disappearing in front of him.
Japan.
Or LI Ducks
Excellent!
Crawl back to mets for less $. Or wish Giants are still stupid with Posey. Or go to Giants for less $.
Nats are gonna finish 3rd in the NL East ahead of ATL and MIA.
Miami?! What have they done?
Meanwhile, you’re actually picking both the Nationals and the Marlins over both the Phillies and the Mets? Dream on.
You read that wrong.
He sure did.
Bell is okay, but the rebuilding Nats must have a prospect that should get a chance.
Prospects are for depth. If you just hand them the job there goes your depth.
They don’t right now.
Nats have youngsters in all three OF positions, at SS, and even C and 2B are still developing. They have 4 kid SPs. They wish they had a prospect for 3B but are not sure they do. Veterans like Bell and Lowe are good additions. If another youngster develops, it’s a bonus. They need to work on their BP bigtime.
Alonso needs to realize he is a one dimentual dude. If you think you are worth a ton of cash sign a one year contract and prove you have value.
So glad I’m not the only one on that boat, been trying to tell people this
Some stupid team will give him 3 years with opt outs. Hopefully they wake up but I wouldn’t bet on it.
His homer numbers are huge but he seems to have lost his luster.
I guess they loathe Yepez.
I feel that Yepez will still make the roster, with Bell as the primary DH and Lowe obviously starting at first. Chaparro will be on the outside looking in it seems.
He went from hitting in the middle of their order and playing almost daily to riding the pine most games.
He made his debut July 5th so just after the second half of the season and not the stupid all star break second half. He played 47 games at first base and was dh in fifteen more.
Or, it could be the other way around. Who knows, one is the same as the other.
Don’t know why. Yepez is a good hitter. He is a better right-handed hitter than Bell, so maybe they platoon at DH?
Two things that never happened again. The learners never put the team up for sale again and no one ever signed a contract with the Washington Nationals for triple figure millions again.
When it does happen do you promise to delete your account?
Funny how spell “Lerners” correctly in your screen name but misspell it in your comment.
The 1b men are dwindling down Alonso you have the Mets, Giants and Mariners left, which do you really think will give you the best chance of winning a WS, did the Mets recently offer Pete 3/$90 and he said no ? If Walker got 3/$60 you should be happy with that offer that you received.
Do you think Boras is telling him “no don’t accept that we can do better” or Alonso saying I’m not accepting that I want 200 mil or I’m not playing? Curious what is the case cause to me I think he’s a fool. I’d like to have him back but not worth overpaying for. I think he’ll have a much better season with no pressure and batting behind Soto.
Carlos Baerga reported that the Mets offered him 3/90 with annual opt-outs. Boras may be holding out for a higher AAV. I’m sure Stearns would be glad to do 5/125 with no opt-outs. Alonso’s market has dried up so re-entering free agency next season may not be such a bad idea with better numbers as you’ve noted.
Twice he foolishly turned down mets extremely generous offers.
I agree but is it him or Boras that says I want more?
100% On Pete. Was Boras even his agent he rejected extension? Pete doesn’t need to have a agent. Ok he turned down that easy say yes to extension so he definitely needs a agent. But he could have picked anyone. He can see Boras has a history of unrealistic asking prices and how players had to go with short term deals.
At his age, position, hard hit data etc he should have jumped on that extension. Should jump on that 3 90 with opt outs.
My 1b rankings.
1. Goldy. Should be better in 2025 than 2024. 2024 is his floor unless he gets hurt. 12m a absolute steal. Won’t surprise me if he can still play in 2026.
2. Santana. He has to hit the wall at some point but at 12m I’d take that bet he has at least 1 more year. Can see him back in 26 as well.
3. Walker. 3 years but might not be his last contract. 20m plenty fair.
4. Trade market. Any of those options more appealing than Pete.
5t Rizzo Bell Pete. Someone might over pay him. I have no interest at 200 or 150. Even that 3 90 sounds awful. I’d be wishing he opts out. I’ll take the cheaper guys who can’t put up Alonso numbers but cheap. $ spent better elsewhere.
@rjtfd I mean you have to trust the expert but also ask questions at this point. That’s why he also earns the big bucks off players’ backs.
I agree alonso should have accepted 3/90 but you have him way too far down. Even if he produced at last years level he’d still be better than everyone you listed except walker. I’d say he still has two 35/100+ years left in him and nobody else listed does.
Scott boras works for the players he represents. I am sure Pete Alonzo could have signed a contract for more than he will get this off-season.
I look at making pitchers work, defense, strike outs. Never look at rbi. Don’t even look at hrs. More interested in bat data. But sure Pete has best odds to hit most hrs which should lead to rbi. And I am betting on Santana not to fall off a cliff and Goldy to do the same and have better luck. Most importantly you aren’t getting Pete at 1 year 12m. They don’t have to be better or the same. Don’t even have to be close but I think they will be.
He musta thought he was Lou Gehrig.
Arizona could sneak into the mix. Naylor is a free agent next winter and could easily serve as the D’backs primary DH if they signed Alonso. The D’backs will have Gallen, Kelly, Montgomery, Suarez, and Naylor all off the books in ’26 so they’ll have money to spend
Mets and Giants are the only ones offering Alonso anything remotely substantial. Seattle is not shopping in the expensive aisle.
Alonso is in a bad spot and is probably taking a pillow deal.
This was the poor man Carlos Santana that Mariners should have been after. Wonder if JB would have accepted an offer; he wouldn’t get any less playing time than he would with Washington.
Josh Bell- I am still not sure if he underrated, or just plain stinks loool
Just hope bell leads off. Wonder if they will sign moncada for third base. He has to be better than tena.
If I was the Mets, I’d change that 90/3 deal to a 4 years 80 million deal now, they have all the leverage. If Pete doesn’t like it, he can go play in indepedent ball and enjoy PB&J sandwhiches. His ego has been detrimental to himself. Hes trying to save face because of his dumb decision to decline the Mets extension last offseason
3 90 is awful. Somewhere between Walker Goldschmidt is what I think of him. 3 53. NY isn’t cheap though so 3 61 make him feel good.
@YourDreamGM 100% agree. This is what Pete gets for being greedy
He’s so streaky it hurts. When he’s good he’s very good and when he’s bad he’s next to worthless. You just never know with him. That said I wouldn’t mine having him on my team.
And it baffles me that many dont realize that type of player hurts more than the less streaky player w similar production.
One of the funkiest swings in the game. I liked him during his first go around in DC and I’m happy he’s back.
And he’ll make an excellent trade candidate at the deadline. Dude can flat out hit when that funky swing is in sync
He’s a very likeable guy. You can’t not like Josh. Surprised to see him back, but would love to see him recapture his earliest big numbers with the Pirates.
I’d have that other guy play 1b before I gave Pete the 200 or whatever he was asking for.
Mets can only wait so long for Alonso… all free agents will be gone— sign Santender
3/60… OR add additional option yr 4/80…. Let him DH/ LF—- sometimes Nimmo moves to center… or at times Nimmo Will DH… Santender is SWITCH HITTER / Mets need another power Bat…. platoon Baty/ Mauricio at 3rd … Can Always move Vientos to 1st…… may need to trade Marte/ or keep Marte, add Jesse Winker as left hand platoon at DH w/ Marte….
Probably waited too long. I think they want Pete back and are just waiting him out. But most the best options are off the board. Got a few potential trades left. Love Winker back for them though.
NL East is stacked. Marlins are going to have a difficult season.
Seems kinda low for a player who can get you 20 home runs and 70 rbi. Even if he is first baseman.
It’s the penalty for being a player that goes through terrible cold stretches. Maybe he just needs a couple months at Driveline? Shrug.
Nationals should be able to keep a firm grip on 4th place in the NLE now
Maybe Toronto is desperate enough to sign Pete Alonso? Move the dancing baby Vlad Jr to 3rd base before his inevitable departure after this season. That is if they are not smart enough to trade Jr before he leaves on his own
Now snag another starter and a solid placeholder at 3B and that should be good for the Nats until the trade deadline comes back around.
Are the Nats collecting first baseman? Lowe,Bell,Yepez, and Chapparro..
Kinda wondering why the M’s weren’t in on this? $6m for a switch hitting 1B//DH is what we should’ve been after. Lifetime k% below 19%. Maybe he just didn’t want to come here? I don’t blame him. Ugghhh…..
Six Million for a negative 0.1 WAR last season and just a 0.4 the year before. No thanks..
This is the non-play on words post
This is a classic trade deadline signing. Team not looking to compete signs veteran bat who always looks good to a contender come July, on a contract that won’t cost buyer or seller too much. When July rolls around, he brings in an OK prospect or a couple of lottery tickets depending on his year & contender desperation. Good signing.
Third base went Kieboom!
Carter Kieboom. He’s just a memory now.
