The Mariners’ pitching depth over the last few seasons has drawn many teams into trade talks and it was almost exactly a year ago that reports surfaced about Boston’s interest in the Seattle rotation. Nothing materialized between the two teams then, but Ryan Divish and Adam Jude of the Seattle Times report that earlier this offseason, the Red Sox offered first baseman Triston Casas for either Bryce Miller or Bryan Woo. However, these “exploratory talks” then “didn’t progress any further,” as the M’s don’t have interest in trading from their rotation unless it is something of a last resort.
Given the contrasting strengths and weaknesses of the Mariners and Red Sox, a pitching-for-hitting swap would seem like an ideal answer to both team’s needs. While Miller or Woo might not be precisely the kind of ace the Sox are looking for to reinforce their rotation, obviously both are talented young arms with upside and team control — neither Miller or Woo is eligible for arbitration yet, and both are controlled through the 2029 season. Likewise, Casas is controlled through 2028 and has already shown glimpses of his potential at the MLB level.
Seattle president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto has consistently turned down past offers for Miller, Woo, George Kirby, Logan Gilbert, and Luis Castillo. Recent reports suggest that the M’s are at least open to hearing what teams have to say about Castillo (the oldest and highest-paid member of the rotation), but Divish and Jude write that “the Mariners….are not actively shopping Castillo.”
Nothing is stopping Dipoto from hearing what teams might have to say, just in case someone steps forth with an offer too good to refuse. However, Dipoto told Divish and other reporters today that “our initial reluctance to any type of deeper discussions on trading starting pitching has probably resulted in a lot fewer phone calls than we’ve usually fielded to this point in the offseason.”
The result is perhaps something of a stalemate, as the Mariners are waiting for rival teams to lower their asking prices and other clubs are waiting for the M’s to become more open to the idea of trading from the rotation depth. Things could evolve once some free agent pitchers come off the board, or perhaps if the Mariners themselves added a pitcher in the form of Roki Sasaki. While virtually every team in baseball will be making an appeal to the Japanese ace now that his posting window is officially open, Seattle’s track record with both pitching development and star Japanese players would seemingly put the M’s move above most teams in the bidding process.
In the interim, it seems as though the Mariners will continue to focus on trying to trade from its minor league depth, except as Dipoto notes, “it’s the time where prospects aren’t a driver, where just about everybody is focused on major league players. And I don’t know why that seems different to me now than it usually does, and maybe that too changes in a week or two with the free agent market really opening up.”
Since shortstop J.P. Crawford is the only established member of the Mariners’ infield, landing a promising first base talent like Casas would go a long way towards shoring up the infield and the shaky lineup as a whole. That said, the Mariners have at least a part-time first base option already in Luke Raley, who looks to be getting a good chunk of playing time against right-handed pitching.
Since the M’s have been linked to such second or third base trade candidates as Nico Hoerner or Alec Bohm, it could be that Seattle might be trying to address one of those positions first before turning to the comparatively easier-to-fill position of first base. An industry source told Divish and Jude that the Mariners could look into trying to add a third team into talks with the Cubs about Hoerner, perhaps to help cover some of the money owed in the remaining two years of Hoerner’s contract.
From Boston’s perspective, trading Casas wouldn’t necessarily create a vacancy at first base. Rafael Devers is a subpar defender at third base, and reportedly the Sox have at least considered moving him to first base in order to open up the hot corner either for one of Boston’s up-and-coming infield prospects, or perhaps for a big free agent like Alex Bregman. This remains a speculative topic for now, as manager Alex Cora told reporters (including Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe) today that he hasn’t spoken with Devers about a position change, and Cora in fact praised Devers’ third base work in 2024 as “outstanding.”
Then again, there is no shortage of gamesmanship going on during the offseason, as it was just last month that Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow downplayed the idea of trading Casas. Reports then surfaced this past weekend that the Sox were considering the possibility of dealing Casas for pitching, and this apparent offer for Miller or Woo only reinforces the idea that Casas is far from an untouchable part of the Red Sox roster. Of course, this also isn’t to say that Casas is going to be moved for anything less than a premium return.

1B – Carlos Santana reunion. Still posted decent numbers in Minnesota last two seasons. Old. Cheap. Still productive. Back up option Anthony Rizzo hoping to catch lightning in a bottle on the cheap.
2B – Ha Seong Kim. Injured. Will miss time. Little offense. Elite defense. Won’t cost as much as Adames or the upper tier infielders. Back up option Brendan Rodgers
3B- take a flier on Yoan Moncada. Back up option, Donovan Solano
LF- platoon Bryan De La Cruz and Luke Raley
RF- platoon Jason Hayward and Dylan Moore

In the unlikely event Seattle acquires Triston Casas, the Mariners could have an outfield of Julio Rodriguez, Victor Robles and Luke Raley against righthanded pitching, with Randy Arozarena at DH. Against lefthanded pitching, Arozarena replaces Raley in the outfield with Mitch Garver slotted at DH.

“waiting to dump Catstillo’s contract”
Not sure what you’re talking about! Castilo’s contract (3 guaranteed years remaining at $24.5 mil a year) is a bargain compared to what teams might have to pay in dollars/years for lesser pitchers on the free agent market.
If Castillo gets traded, it certainly won’t’ be a salary dump! A team will be paying all or 90% of that salary and they’ll be giving up assets to Seattle.
Sad.Sox 3
1977 – I couldnt agree with you more!!!! Getting 80% of Castillo’s talent (at this point in his career) for $24m and three years is entirely better than all of teh other Sp’s out there not named Burnes or Fried.
As a Red Sox fan I would take Castillo in a heart beat, although Casas wouldnt be going the other way
Roussos1
Give up something to get something. True . As long as that someth6is comparable. And casas is not. Not for either of the 2. Hancock and a throw I best id offer
Golfer1081
That some good homerism right there. Woo isn’t Gilbert being the top tier prospect with at least a couple season of good ball under his belt. Wait till hitters see him a second time through before assigning him top of the line value.
Sad.Sox 3
Give to get…..true today as it always was, except the spreadsheet guys dont want to ever give anything.
From a Sox fan perspective i want Castillo, and would be willing to trade Mayer (to ultimately replace Crawford) and E. Valdez, but you’d need to take back Yoshida also and about 50% of salary. Thats a savings of $15mm per year for next three to M’s
Stevil
They don’t need a regular first baseman, though. They just need someone to platoon with Raley.
If they were to even consider trading a starter, surely they’d want a MLB-ready, or proven, controllable player at a real position of need, like third base.
muskie73
Seattle could make room for Triston Casas by moving Luke Raley to a corner outfield against righthanders with Randy Arozarena as the designated hitter. Against lefthanders, Arozarena could replace Raley in the outfield with Mitch Garver filling the DH slot.
However, four years of Casas is certainly not worth five years of Bryan Woo or Bryce Miller,
Stevil
Arozarena hasn’t hit well as a DH, though.
I don’t think Garver likely sticks around, either.
muskie73
Steamer projects a modest 2025 wRC+ of 104 in 65 games for Mitch Garver, who is unlikely to match his 2024 BABIP of .216.
Even in his disasterous 2024 season Garver posted a respectable OPS of .763 against lefthanders.
Stevil
The problem is that they need a catcher who can play Sundays and day games. Odds are they’ll still face mostly RHPs. Banking on a rebound from a guy making 12m is too risky for a team that really needs production from their bench.
The BABIP was low, but It concerns me that his contact numbers dropped so significantly and the K% really jumped.
twozero6ix
A laughable offer for 2 pitchers who already flashed how great they can be.

Woo is really good. No way I deal him for Casas.
Go bring Justin Turner back. He was really good in SEA and is only going to cost a little bit of money. I think slow playing this market is the right call though. They’ll be some bargains at the end of FA in Turner’s tier.
If Castillo’s full salary could be moved—do it immediately. You can find a much cheaper arm to plug into the 5 hole at that park.
ClevelandSteelEngines
His arm slot is his biggest weapon. If his elbow holds and develops a second offspeed pitch, maybe so
Mynameisnoname
I think Woo set the record for TJS scares in one season with all those abbreviated starts and shut down periods.
He was nasty when available and able to go more than 4 IP though.
marinersfan1977
Apparently you have no idea that Justin Turner made $13M last year. He probably will take less this year, but the Mariners or another team are not gonna be able to sign him for $5 million or less, especially if they’re looking to make that signing before February!
soxshortstop
….or he’ll have TJ surgery soon enough and lose 1 1/2 years of the cheaper $$ arbitration years. Trading everyday players for starting pitchers is a difficult process to assess due to the likelihood of a long downtime period for the pitcher. It’s not an easy straight up evaluation.

sad tormented neglected mariners fan
An all star caliber pitcher for an all star caliber first baseman…
Pitchers are worth more than first basemen
muskie73
The Mariners would not deem that trade fair.
Baseball Trade Values assigns Triston Casas a surplus value of $29.8 million and Bryan Woo a surplus value of $50.9 million.
The demand for starting pitching exceeds the demand for first basemen and Casas comes with only four years of team control to Woo’s five years of team control.
Roussos1
Not even close. Woo will be a number 1
Brettlez
It’s only fair if you don’t understand baseball. Pitching is much more valuable than 1B. Look at these contracts mediocre pitchers are getting. Woo and Miller have the floor of #3 starters with upsideof 1s of things brwak right. That’s not worth even close to an above avg to good 1B. Now if it was vlad with 4 years left, let’s talk.
Joemo
Brett – go and compare the first few seasons of Casas and Vlad JR. 🙂
Brettlez
Vlad came up much younger than Casas and I believe was 21 at this point in his career compared to Casas 24
ClevelandSteelEngines
Pitching when healthy is more valuable. I’m not arguing otherwise. I’m arguing you are overrating your pitchers. Not against and for an equal trade, as it is just a stupid failed idea that got leaked.
Miller had an incredible year. Incredible as in impossible to believe. His home split was a big driver for this season. Outside of TMobile, this means a whole lot less. So SP2-3 in Seattle is closer to SP4 elsewhere.
As for Woo, his seasons was so short and interrupted we can’t say whether it was earned. There was not enough time for regression. This makes it hard to judge his true value and how it resonates with his underlying metrics. Plus, we have to figure his health. This is a huge risk.
As for Casas, he’s not a sell high. His market value has tanked because of the injury. It’s not vlad’s level, sure. But it isn’t as overrated.
Brettlez
He had 2 blow up games on the road that are significantly small sample size skewing the data. Outside of these 2 outings his home/away splits are comparable. He’s 26, going into his 3rd year and has mostly had success with just an elite fastball as he hones in his secondaries. I certainly don’t think his results are even near impossible to believe and in fact i think there’s room for significant growth.
Joemo
Vlad came up at 20, Casas at 22.
ClevelandSteelEngines
You need to cherry picking to prove your point? I never denied he isn’t good, just his seasons was outside of what was to be ever expected and used hyperbole to express it. He had an over 2 ERA difference in home and away. Unless you want to say TMobile benefited his ERA just as much as those two meltdowns did the opposite to his road ERA.
Until he hones his secondaries, just like Casas, is overrated. Room for growth is just speculation.
Brettlez
Certainly not cherry picking. 2 of his road starts account for 33% of his road runs. I don’t think we can look at 16 total road starts and say he’s a splits guy. We’ll see how he does this year. I would be inclined to say speculation but Ms have shown consistent ability to develop pitching. Gilbert was similar at Miller’s stage, elite fastball not much secondaries yet. Now he’s a cy young contender.
ClevelandSteelEngines
Removing his two worst starts out of small sample has a huge effect. Gilbert also had some of the same splits. Don’t tell me you want to explain away the difference with his two worst away starts too? They all benefit a lot from TMobile’s unique supression.
Brettlez
Yes but the prior 2 years prior he actually had better numbers on the road so. Think you’re looking too much at single season splits.
Big whiffa
It was either/or. Seattle def should take that trade ! Cases is as proven as either of them and Seattle cant score runs
sad tormented neglected mariners fan

That’s too much, and Casas is too little.
Roussos1

ClevelandSteelEngines
pretty sure that’s about the same as Woo.
Fever Pitch Guy
Rousseau – Half a season? So you slept through 2023 when he put up a .856 OPS and finished third for ROY?
deweybelongsinthehall
Fever, Casas WOD have been ROTY had his first half equaled his second in 23. Too bad he had that weird injury last year. He likely would then not even be available. Funny, how people including us at times only remember what we want to remember.
HighOnPineTar
Not only that Fever & Dewey, but Casas in July 2023 had a better month than any single month Manny or Papi had in their entire Red Sox careers.
I am very uncomfortable selling low on that kind of talent at his age with plenty of control left, he came back way too soon from that tough fluke rib injury last season.
Fever Pitch Guy
High – It’s a complex situation with Casas.
He has the talent to be an elite slugger and even an MVP candidate.
But the injuries, especially the ribcage, are a concern. If he can’t swing as hard as he did prior to the rib injury, that could definitely impact his production.
And there’s also the off-the-field issues which have been well documented. So I can understand the Sox aggressively shopping him, but I personally would like to keep him for at least 2025 and see what transpires. But of course keeping him could result in his value being severely damaged if he performs poorly or gets injured again.
Ma4170
Same could be said for woo
Golfer1081
Woo has 120 innings of god ball after a average rookie season. Let’s not pretend Cases wasn’t a elite prospect that finish top three in ROY voting. Fans always overate their own and downplay other teams players.
Brettlez
Certainly not overrating the players. It’s called positional value. Look at these contracts average pitchers are getting. If both casas and Miller or woo hit the open market, the pitchers are getting significantly more $$.
ClevelandSteelEngines
Red Sox are truly pathetic. Casas is overrated right now, but the same can be said about the Seattle starters.

proton
Woo didn’t stay healthy all last season and Hancock except 1 game did fine. I still believe if he gets a full time spot in a rotation that he doesn’t have to be worried about being sent down he will be good. Is he a #1 probably not that 2-5 spot needs to be filled too. He hasn’t done what Miller or Woo have but he can be in that mix. Teams need to try and pry him away but Castillo will be the easiest. Boston could get it done tomorrow/ today if they ask for Castillo. Jerry is playing it slow. Doesn’t want to offer him wants to be asked for him. Boston do the Castillo for Casas trade. Throw in another good prospect and you might pry Locklear away too. I am not sure why anyone would want any of our pitchers but Castillo. The others are all overrated because of their Homefield.
ClevelandSteelEngines
Castillo is overrated just the same. Plus he had a considerable home road split, and that’s looking more and more like a decline. In Fenway, that is not what you want.
hoof hearted
Yet everyone is asking for one of them, hmmm.
marinersfan1977

Fever Pitch Guy

@Cle
How is Casas “overrated”?
ClevelandSteelEngines
Well off of injuries and he had up and down results. At this point his value is wildly misinterpreted: Sox nation says he’s a 40/125 guy, and everyone else sees another 25 homer corner with high strike outs.
Can’t gauge his true value when there is such a big gap in perception. I said he’s overrated in the context of that’s how the market is currently seeing him. I
JoeBrady
If both players are overrated, doesn’t that cancel each other out?
ClevelandSteelEngines
If it were that easy. Each team doesn’t view their player as overrated. Since both teams are both overvaluing above each player’s current value while also devaluing the other teams player, there can’t be any synergy.
Hence, this is all moot. Not until there is movement off of these positions will it happen. I don’t expect that to happen between these two players, however, it doesn’t mean other talks can’t proceed.
Old York
Good. Casas is overrated.
Golfer1081
How is he overrated? If anything his value is down because of injuries. When healthy he’s been good on all levels.
soxshortstop
so is Miller and Woo. TJ surgery coming soon too.
BronxBombers23
As long as the offer isn’t enormous I don’t trade Gilbert. I would probably trade Woo, but it would take more than Casas. Red Sox can have Castillo…
Joemo
The Sox have one gently used Yoshida. He can hit. You know you want him.
But in all honesty, I expected the Red Sox and Mariners to link up on a deal, it’s too perfect of a scenario not to. Now that Blooms gone, the Sox seem to have more reasonable asks for trades.
ClevelandSteelEngines
Can you please thresh out what you mean by that last sentence. What was unreasonable about Bloom’s asks and what makes Breslow reasonable?
Joemo
There are articles out there (maybe here, I forget where) which said there’s reports that Bloom was difficult to trade with, overvaluing his own pieces all the time, making him difficult to trade with.
In addition to this report, Breslow has made a handful of trades – with varying levels of success. I would never have expected Bloom to make the Verdugo trade for example.

hllywdjff
They offer Mayer in a deal now we might have something…
Can we please get a DH?
Castillo for Casas + Yoshida is interesting, but it would create a bit of a log jam in Seattle as you’d have 3 lefties at 1B/DH in Raley, Yoshida and Casas.
I think a simpler trade would be Castillo + Competitive Balance Pick for Casas + Giolito + International Signing Money.
It’s about a similar payroll change in both sides. The M’s get weaker in the rotation, but between coaching and TMobile could hopefully get something out of Giolito. If not, then they can pivot to Hancock, Evans, Morales or Garcia (or Roki who seems that they are going hard for). For lineup, they’d have Casas at DH and Raley/Locklear at 1B. They’d also open up a little bit of money to address 2B/3B.
The Red Sox improve one spot in their rotation without adding salary. They can then go big to add Bregman and move Devers to 1B and/or still go for Fried. A Red Sox rotation of Fried, Houck, Castillo, Bello, and Crawford would be solid.
JoeBrady
I’d have to think about the value, but it is a very interesting proposal.
Big whiffa
Boston wants Bregman bad ! Fenway is one of the only parks that lightens his risk. But I still like cases much more than Bregman over next 5 seasons

I think it makes more sense for Bregman to stay in Houston where he benefits from that short left field. Obviously, he’s chasing money but realistically, staying in Houston helps himself. I don’t think he does well in Boston.

Not the same short porch. You still need to get it up and over it. Many balls have gone for singles and doubles that should have been a HR.
But even if we ignore all of that, looking at Baseball Savant, he had 26 HRs last year but was expected to have hit 31. If he had been playing in Fenway, he would have had an xHR of 22.
I don’t think he actually performs well in Boston but who knows.

I’m a diehard M’s fan and I’d hate to see us trade anyone from our Rotation, even Castillo, but Triston Casas is exactly what the M’s need at 1B.
Triston Casas CRUSHED it in the entire 2nd half of 2023. He had a 175 wRC+ for the entire 2nd half of the 2023 season. Either you have an extremely high bar for a young 1B or you are confusing T Casas with someone else.
A 175 wRC+ for a half a season as a 22 or 23 yr old is legit production

Over the past two seasons Triston Casas posted 2.8 bWAR and an OPS+ of 126 over 195 games while Luke Raley posted 6.0 bWAR and an OPS+ of 127 over 255 games (despite concerning platoon splits).
The Mariners could find room for Casas but should be reluctant to trade great value.
deweybelongsinthehall
I’m not going to speak on Raley but to use saber stats is just nuts. Anyone who saw Casas in the second half of 23 knows he can rake. His 24 was ruined by a weird rib muscle injury that should not hamper him moving forward. Only reason he’s available is because of the Sox overloading of lefties. It takes talent to get talent and Casas has an incredible upside.
bwmiller79
I like Casas, 6’5 245, power potential to be a perenniel 30+ HR hitter. I’d agree with the article, M’s likely feel they can plug 1st base more easily than some of the other holes in their infield, but Casas would be a nice addition to the M’s lineup. Sign Nick Madrigal to play second base and leadoff. M’s wouldn’t need to do much more. Pass on Nico Hoerner.

There’s basically two sp left and they’re gonna cost
Joemo
I think they only would have moved Casas if they got Soto. Now that they missed, I think it’s less likely that they trade him (or Abreu for that matter) and go harder after FA SP.
Golfer1081
Fans don’t want to trade him. All the trade talk is a result from him not signing an extension when his value is down. Most fans would rather see Abreu go.
Joemo
Abreu is more “replacable” than Casas as Anthony is just right there, waiting for his shot, so I get it.
I’d rather trade neither and just spend money to fix the rotation 🙂
Zippy the Pinhead
Good call for the M’s. Bad move for the Sox to have this made public. What a terrible front office! Now they’ll have to trade Casas, and they’re not going to get much in return. Tell you what, make it Casas for Garver, Haniger, and an order of fried grasshoppers.
Ragnarok
Nomar!
They don’t have to do a damn thing with Casas. He’s 24 years old and under their control for 4 more years. He’ll be playing 1B for them next season unless they find another team willing to do the swap the Mariners wouldn’t.
hoof hearted
No respect for Raley’s hitting vs leftys. What did he hit vs leftys in 2023? Anyone?

Casas for Woo…pull the trigger.! Throw in Romy Gonzalez, Mickey Gasper., and/or Enmanuel Valdez. Save the Sox some DFA paperwork.
Move Devers to first and put Chase Meidroth on 3rd. While all the fanboys have been naval gazing at Anthony, Meyer, Teel, and Campbell, Meidroth is flying under the radar and appears to be a Kevin Youkilis type on-base machine.
Ragnarok
He didn’t offer you any either. Just DFA fodder….
Zucca
Miller or Woo for Casas is a fair offer. Red Sox could have asked for Gilbert or Kirby. If Seattle can’t get a hitter in FA, make this trade and find a stop gap 5th starter.
Yaz'sOldBattingGloves
I’ve said it before, the Sox trading Casas will end up being the second coming of Jeff Bagwell. I think Casas will put up Soto like numbers if he gets a chance. Unthinkable.
whyhayzee
I don’t exactly agree with your hyperbole, but I do agree with the basic point that trading Casas lets him turn into a star on another team. I think Casas, Abreau, Duran, should all be held onto, they are important building blocks to a formidable top to bottom lineup. This is something that has been a hallmark of really good Red Sox teams. But … it all comes back to the pitching. If that’s solid, they are a true powerhouse team.
whyhayzee
Ugh, there’s no a in Abreu.
Ragnarok
I think Abreu can play a good corner OF but I’d personally sell high on him versus selling low on Casas.
I think Abreu won’t be a consistent offensive producer at last season’s level.
whyhayzee
What is the obsession with “selling high”? Are all the other teams thinking that every player is as good as their best season? Or is the thought that teams are attracted to cheaper players? I think you keep the guys who help you win. Last year’s team was hurt by pitching injuries and still managed a .500 record. With Whitlock and eventually Gio, maybe pitching will be better. That doesn’t even factor in any additions.
JoeBrady
whyhayzee
Ugh, there’s no a in Abreu.

Then shouldn’t that be “there is no “A” in breu?
Dickiesox
“Outstanding”. What did Cora see?!?! Improved defense? Yes. Still crummy defense? Absolutely yes.

So, to summarize the commentariat:
Casas is overrated.
Seattle starters are overrated.
Except Woo.
But Woo is overrated.
Castillo is not overrated.
Gilbert is untouchable.
But they’re all overrated.
And Casas is a stud.
Seems like a trade would be perfect: one overrated player for another. Or one untouchable star for another.
Or maybe a overrated pitcher for an untouchable 1b. Or the reverse.
It’s gotta happen.
Ma4170
Dont forget that Robles is somehow now a sure thing after one good (overperformed the numbers) half season preceded by years of well below average performance. Good luck with that.
Selah Rick 2
So is Casas!
CleaverGreene
I’m a neutral observer and I see Casas plus a heckuva lot more is needed for one of the Mariners young starters.
It is Boston doing the posturing in this scenario.

BOSTON STOP WITH THE CASAS TRADE BULLS*IT REDSOX NATION DIDN’T WAIT 6 Years for a Rebuild so you can trade away our future HOF 1b! Go buy Aces that’s your only job right now FREID AND BURNS, THATS IT! LET OUR BOYS FILL THE HOLES AT 2B, RHB, Backup C, GO GET US SOME ACES FOR MONEY! SASAKI MAYBE, NO CROCHET TRADE, TRADE YOSHIDA HES EXPENDABLE

Thank you Seattle, Redsox Nation

I’m really pretty high on Casas. Maybe would have sent Miller with their depth maybe not Woo. Guess Hancock isn’t too appeasing to Boston (not suprising)
Stevil
What depth!?
That’s the problem for Seattle. They don’t have much depth.
They somehow managed to get through 2024 using just 6 starters (plus one Díaz start that could have been a bullpen day).
They need to add pitching themselves.
chemfinancing
Buddy are you yanking my chain Seattle has the most rich SP depth in the league save maybe one or two like Tampa or LAD. Kirby and Gilbert are legitimate All Stars Bryan Woo is soaring, Bryce Miller is too, Emerson Hancock will be solid as well they have a ton of guys can’t forget Luis Castillo who is year in and year out a Cy Young Canidate
Stevil
Most teams need 8-10 starters to get through a season. Seattle has just 6 legitimate options and an emergency option in Díaz.
Seattle needs starting pitching depth. If they trade someone, they have to get even more.
ayrbhoy
Stevil- can’t have enough studs to fill in for an injured SP.
I feel like some of us in Mariner Nation take the health of the Rotation for granted. I feel like a lot of M’s fans think the Rotation will largely repeat their 2024 season where 4 guys gave you between 175 ip – 208 ip. The 5th spot was a combination of Woo and Hancock even that gave us 180 ip.
Just ask HOU Astro’s fans about Rotation injuries! They had more than an entire Rotations worth of SP’s on the IL last year.
The M’s obviously have Hancock as depth but after that there is a lot of unknowns. How many in that Arkansas Rotation are ready to make spot starts? Are L Evans, M Morales and B Garcia ready? Will Garcia go back to being a lefty RP at the MLB level? Tbh I’d rather we don’t have to answer those questions….but….you do have to plan ahead!
chemfinancing
Meaning they got through 2024 with “just 6 starters” is a good thing meaning everyone stayed healthy and performed well which basically no other team can say. They really came on hot after acquiring Arozareana so let’s see what they can add in the off-season via the bat
Stevil
And how likely is that to happen again?
The priority is the offense. I’m simply saying they shouldn’t trade pitching to address other needs.
KamKid
Unlike the deadline where teams just have to come up with prospects to make the major league team better, it seems like these types of major leaguer for major leaguer trades are the ones being floated around. I guess that’s because there are very few teams admitting defeat before the season even begins. But I certainly don’t blame Seattle for holding tight here. They should keep all their pitchers including their optionable depth guys like Hancock and upgrade the position player side using prospects in trade or just signing free agents. Just be patient and let those bad teams lose out on their pursuits to get better and then make the prospect for major leaguer trades. Brandon Lowe feels like a gettable target for Seattle without giving up a major leaguer pre arb starter.
If you’re patient and willing to force the Blue Jays hand later in the offseason, I think they could be convinced to pivot away from trying to contend this year. Guerrero would help that team for sure.
Bruin1012
Breslow has talked about wanting pitching and it makes sense to kick all the tires.
Breslow isn’t going to give Casas away but he understands that cost controlled young starting pitching is very coveted right now. Casas would be a very good get for the Mariners. He’s going to hit for power anywhere he has a great eye he’s going to hit but he’s coming off an injury plagued year so I get why other teams may look at him differently.
As a Red Sox fan I would be leery of Mariners pitchers they really have large home and away splits
Ragnarok
Nothing will come back. They’ll have to eat money just to dump him.
adshadbolt
If I was Boston and I’m set of trading casas I would call Houston or Arizona. Framber is available it sounds like. AZ I would ask about gallen but Phadft and Montgomery for casas and Yoshida sounds reasonable their may have to be a prospect or two thrown in there somewhere but
JoeBrady
I like the AZ idea a lot. Pfaadt seems a little like Woo-lite. Monty for Yoshida is a tough call, depending on what you expect from Monty. Yoshida mostly replaces Peterson, at probably a modestly higher price. Casas replaces Walker at a much lower cost.
And it solves AZ’s Montgomery issue.
Ma4170
That’s about as fair an offer as i can think of if you believe in Casas, which I do. Teams do need to trade from strength to improve a clear weakness. Not sure people outside of seattle love woo as much their fans do.
baseballguru
CRAIG BRESLOW!…We have lots of options but no prospect we have in the system right now or on the team has Casas power ceiling not even Devers. I’d like to see Abreu, Duran, Anthony, Montgomery & Rafaela as our starting and UTOF 5,
Campbell at 2b now who can play 2b/OF/SS just like Rafaela can for massive versatility so the Infield is Casas 1b, Campbell 2b, Story SS, Devers 3B that’s the 5 INF, UT Mayer, Wong C and a back up C Teel…we’re done…(guys like Bleis OF, Cespedes SS, Arias SS, Garcia OF, Romero 2b/SS, Zanetello SS, Castro OF) are all used for depth, injuries, trading for your Crochet or other arm you think we need…Trade Yoshida he’s useless because of the sheer talent in out system right now and Devers eventual move off 3b to DH as Campell, Mayer, Cespedes, Zanetello develop the next 2 years…Story’s gone either at contracts end or prior, Raffy is DHing, we need to keep our studs and fortify ourselves with controllable cheap prospects while we have such talent and spend most of the coin on extentions and Aces until the farm system arms and Bailey’s revamped processes start producing sustained starters and closers. That is how the Redsox will make the playoffs and win the most rings possible and have it be sustainable. It’s right in front of us, we’ve been patient, let’s not throw a grenade in the middle of it all just because we lost Soto or feel some imagined urgency, or through fan pressures, when all we need to do is reallocate the Soto funds to 2 Aces and call it go time…trade Gonzales, Hamilton, Valdez, Meidroth it’s not like those guys, or the prospects in parentheses suck…they’re very good, and plenty worth Crochet in a many for 1 trade scenario, toss in Sandlin, or Perales fine, Winkleman, the pen gets better by default pushing the back end rotation arms to the pen, this is a no brainer that only requires spending cash on Aces and smart choices, a lil patience as the young guys gel and figure it out as a baseball team and we are going to dominate baseball for 5 to 7 or even 10 years
Bruin1012
Roman Anthony has elite power potential on par with Casas. His exit velocities are among the highest in baseball I’m not just talking the minors I mean baseball. The guy doesn’t chase and will take a walk. He takes a very mature at bat. The only knock is the ground ball percentage he hits a lot of really hard ground balls. In order to tap into his power he’s going to have to hit more balls in the air. Even if he doesn’t get fully into his power hitting to many ground balls he still probably runs into 25 homers a year but if he weaponizes that swing into more loft he’s got 40 homer potential and he’s still very young just turning 21 and likely to make his debut as a 21 year old.
dano62
If this was a real offer, M’s struck out. Woo has great stuff but not stamina or health record worth committing long term to.
Stevil
You realize that Casas spent far more time on the IL than Woo, right? Woo is also pre-arm and under control for 5 more years (Casas, 4), Seattle lacks SP depth, and they have a lefty-hitting first baseman in-house. who put up better numbers.
Casas doesn’t make a lot of sense for Seattle.
Sagacity
The Red Sox remain idiots. Not big news. Pretty clear they have no clue how to build a winner. If the RUMOR for the Seattle reporters is true, then Boston has already decided to kiss Devers’ hind quarters by moving him to 1B so he can then be known as the worst 3B and 1B in the history of the game. He has no skills that transfer well to 1B and he will touch the ball 3 to 5 times as many times as he does at 3B where he’s proven he can’t play defense. Simply brilliant thinking to keep Devers from pouting as the most immature player in the MLB.
There is no net gain on defense if the Butcher of Boston moves from 3B to 1B, the problems will simply grow since he has no fielding skills and now he’ll be involved in 3 to 5 times as many players to screw up.
Boston fans who think 1B is a simple position anyone can play, wake up and learn the game idiots. At 1B his health is at greater risk from collisions with runnters. His scatter arm will be a disaster on double plays adding many additional bases for the other team. His lack of agility, first step speed and balance will create more problems than you can imagine.
After all that, it sounds like something the idiot Cora would think of!!! Leave it to him to screw up something else. I hear Atlanta management can’t wipe the smile off Sale’s face since he doesn’t have to play for Cora!!!
We lose at least 10 games a year because of Devers’ defense at 3B so if he handles 3 to 5 times as many plays, YOU DO THE MATH!!! YIKES.
If the Red Sox were smart, which they are not, they would trade Devers for Arenado and then sign Fried and Burnes for the $90Million they have under the CAP. They don’t need to use it all but they could since all the team needs going forward is a REAL 3B and two top of the rotation starters. Everything else is incidental and the skills at the weaker positions will continue to grow with experience. Campbell can step in at SS with Story the constantly hurt one as the utility infielder. Grissom can step in at 2B and if he fails then Story can take over for him. Arenado is still a stud on defense and he’s a power hitting right handed batter who loves Fenway. The outfield is set on day one with Duran, Rafaela and Abreu and when Anthony is ready one of the three will be the outfield depth. Teel when ready will move in front of Conner at Catcher. That’s a huge defensive improvement over last year and a much better hitting team too.
The pitching staff of Burnes, Fried, Houck, Crawford and Bello is an enormous upgrade from 2024. With Chapman and Hendrik at the back end the relievers are far improved too. Figuring out the back-ups is all that would be left.to do. Yoshida can start the year as the DH and if he can’t cut it he can be moved and the DH spot can be a place to give guys a day off from playing defense.
This team would compete for the division title in the AL East.

Mariners are a dangerous team. They went 5-1 against San Diego. Swept the Mets. Had a winning record against Houston and Texas. I look forward to seeing what they can do in 2025.
