Juan Soto has officially departed the Bronx in favor of Queens, as the superstar slugger agreed to a 15-year deal with the Mets worth $765MM last night. Now that they know Soto will not be returning to the club in 2025, the Yankees are now poised to pivot towards a number of other notable free agent targets, spreading the money they would’ve spent on Soto around their roster. While the team is sure to have a number of irons in the fire as they attempt to reconstruct their roster without Soto in the mix, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported this morning that the club is expected to make a “strong push” for free agent first baseman Christian Walker after previously expressing interest in him earlier this winter.
Walker, 34 in March, has been a fixture of the Diamondbacks lineup at first base since longtime franchise face Paul Goldschmidt was traded to the Cardinals prior to the 2019 season but has found a new gear in his early thirties. Over the past three seasons, Walker has slashed a strong .250/.322/.481 (120 wRC+) with a 20.8% strikeout rate, a 9.9% walk rate, and 95 homers in 447 games for Arizona. He’s done that while providing high quality defense at first base, winning the NL’s Gold Glove award at the position in each of the past three campaigns. That combination of solid offense and elite defense at the position have made Walker one of the league’s most valuable commodities at first base in recent years. His 10.8 fWAR since the start of the 2022 season is tied with Yandy Diaz for fifth-best in the majors among qualified first basemen, trailing only Freddie Freeman, Bryce Harper, Matt Olson, and Goldschmidt in that time. Meanwhile, Walker ranked fifth in fWAR and seventh in wRC+ among qualified hitters at first base this year while trailing only Freeman, Harper, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in both categories.
It’s the sort of production that virtually any team could benefit from, but the Yankees in particular could use a big boost at first base. Incumbent first baseman Anthony Rizzo departed for free agency last month after a injury-marred campaign that saw him hit just .228/.301/.335 (84 wRC+) in 92 games, and the club’s internal solutions at the position are lackluster. Rookie Ben Rice struggled to a 73 wRC+ in his first taste of big league action last year, while DJ LeMahieu was one of the worst hitters in baseball this past year with a .204/.269/.259 slash line during his age-35 season. Adding Walker would improve both the club’s offense and defense in a substantial way, offering a steady solution at first base.
What’s more, the $60MM price tag over three years that MLBTR predicted Walker would land at the outset of the offseason is hardly cost-prohibitive, and should leave the Yankees with plenty of financial flexibility to stay aggressive in upgrading other areas of the roster. Third base and the outfield appear to be the most obvious places for the club to upgrade, but a pursuit of a top-flight starter such as Corbin Burnes or Max Fried can’t be ruled out either. The Yankees have reportedly met with both players this offseason and appear to have real interest in pairing one of the two remaining aces available in free agency with Gerrit Cole atop the club’s rotation. Of the two, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports that the club prefers Fried over Burnes. Adding either pitcher would surely require the club to trade at least one of their existing starters, with southpaw Nestor Cortes and veteran righty Marcus Stroman standing out as the most speculated-upon trade candidates.
Turning back to the lineup, the Yankees have reported interest in top free agent infielder Alex Bregman, which MLBTR discussed earlier this morning. One other option to fill the club’s vacancy at the hot corner could be Cardinals veteran Nolan Arenado. Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported this morning that the Yankees are among a “select handful” of teams that the Cards have approached regarding the possibility of an Arenado trade, though it’s unclear to what level the Yankees reciprocated that interest in a deal if they did so at all. The 33-year-old has a full no-trade clause in his deal with the Cardinals, and his ability to be choosy about his destination has seemingly contributed to a “very limited” trade market for the veteran star.
Presumably, the Yankees are one of the teams Arenado would approve a trade to if the Cardinals are broaching the subject with the club. He could be a sensible fit for the Bronx given his strong defense at third base that would form an impressive left side of the infield alongside shortstop Anthony Volpe while allowing Jazz Chisholm Jr. to move back to second base. With that being said, there are questions about Arenado’s offense at this stage of his career. While he’s just two years removed from finishing as a finalist for the NL MVP award, those two seasons haven’t been kind to him as he slashed just .269/.320/.426 (104 wRC+) in a combined 247 games. He’s been approximately a three-win player over the past two seasons, but with three years remaining on his contract it’s fair to wonder if further regression on either side of the ball could be in Arenado’s future.
As for the outfield, the Yankees have been connected to Teoscar Hernandez as a potential back-up for Soto, with reporting yesterday indicating the club has “serious interest” in his services. Feinsand characterizes the club’s interest in Hernandez differently, however, reporting that the club’s talks with the slugger are “very preliminary” as the club has been focused on Soto to this point in the winter. Of course, now that Soto is off the board it’s easy to imagine the club’s interest in Hernandez becoming far more serious. While no player can replace Soto’s bat in the lineup and pairing another right-handed bat with Judge and Stanton in the middle of the Yankees lineup is far from ideal, Hernandez’s 134 wRC+ in 2024 would still offer the club a legitimate middle-of-the-order threat they’ll be lacking now that Soto has moved on.
WideWorldofSports
Yankees will better in the long run not having signed Soto. Mets have won the world series in december before. No sweat.
Yankee Clipper
Yeah, and honestly, that’s the least of both the Yankees and Mets problems…. They both still need to beat the reigning champions, the Dodgers. That’s not going to be an easy task regardless of their acquisitions, especially if Ohtani can return to form pitching.
ReyDay
Yankees were 0-4 against the Mets last year, and lost by a combined 22 runs over those 4 games. They just lost the 2nd best hitter to them, and you’re former closer. All while the Mets have just as much money to spend this offseason as Yanks. It’s not looking good for y’all.
Yankee Clipper
But, you’re missing the whole point. It doesn’t matter if the Mets beat the Yankees or the other way around – neither beat the Dodgers.
I get it, you want to prove the Mets are better, and they may well be right now, but maybe not. Time will tell, but it’s largely irrelevant to the overall goal of winning it all because of the Dodgers.
Also, don’t you need to focus on getting past the division series? It’s cool to win the offseason and have the most money (which you don’t, but it doesn’t matter), but you should really win games in the postseason before talking any smack bro.
ReyDay
Nobody talking smack simply pointing to the facts when a yankee fan that’s bitter says they’ll be better in long run. And we took 2 of 4 from Dodgers while you guys only took 1 so and swept the series against y’all so what’s all this talk about winning postseason games? Cause to my knowledge Mets won more postseason games than Yanks
Yankee Clipper
Uh, you win more postseason games? You may want to rework that math.
ReyDay
Sorry you are correct 8-7 but still that’s not saying much in terms of being better especially after being swept by the Mets
Yankee Clipper
I wasn’t saying they are better, I said who knows? I also said, who cares, because neither can get past the Dodgers right now. Both teams need to get better and the offseason just started.
Look, I’m happy for the Mets, they acquired a great player. I’d rather he be with the Yankees. But all in all, I don’t get much satisfaction in winning an intercity rivalry. I want to win the whole thing, man.
I’m sure you guys few the same way on the Mets side. And, I thought you were responding to me initially… that’s my bad on that. I took what you said in the wrong context.
YanksPhan42
So if a Yankees fan didn’t want Soto back for that money when we have multiple holes to fill…..they’re automatically “bitter”? LOL!!!
Mets won more post season games than the Yankees? Were the Mets in the WS? Are the Mets the 27 time WS Champs?
Mets SWAPPED Pete Alonso for Juan Soto at the moment. Soto IS better but it’s NOT the monumental upgrade the Muts fans are rejoicing about…..and their starting pitching blows.
ReyDay
This move isn’t about winning next year though, I would like to but it’s setting a precedent that other stars will want to come here in the future and chipping away at the yankee legacy that has been held over the Mets and really every MLB team for that matter, that Yankees will outbid everyone to get the star player.
Yankee Clipper
Yes that’s true. The Mets are still retooling to shape up their new roster under Stearns and there’s no question they are playing with the Big Boys in free agency.
Either way, I wish you guys luck. I know we will always go back and forth about our teams, and the Mets were in the Yanks’ shadow for a long time because of the Wilpons (and others), so enjoy it, it should be a fun ride!
Karensjer
You don’t get it. The Bankee$ need to beat an NL team to win the World Series, and you just admitted the team is worse than 2 NL teams.
ReyDay
Yeah that’s one thing I don’t like about this site, unless said comment is addressed to a specific person it’s hard to know who replying to who. But yes best of luck, Mets got their hands full with NL East and you guys with AL East, gonna be an interesting year!
Fernando P
Does it really matter who won a series in the regular season? To my knowledge, they don’t hand out rings for that.
ReyDay
To my knowledge they don’t hand out rings for making it to the WS either? But when comparing teams yes head to head matchups is a good way to gauge who is better.
YanksPhan42
This isn’t the NFL. If the A’s beat the Dodgers 2 of 3 are they the better team? LOL!! What were the starting pitching matchups in that meaningless midseason game? Who was sitting or injured? Who was hot or in a slump? Clearly you know ZERO about the game dude.
Rumors2godsears
Technically they do give out rings for making it to the World Series. You get a ring for winning the pennant.
coocoo20
You just tried making a point with the Mets won’t more games. And we’re proven wrong. Now the games don’t matter
ReyDay
Clearly you missed the point, the point being head to head matchups are a good indicator of who is better. Is it full proof, no there are upsets and baseball is a streaky sport. But it is a better tool to use than most.
ReyDay
No read the comments he said win some postseason games before you talk smack but Mets won almost the same amount as the Yanks. I said that’s not saying much in terms of being better than them.
quimmy
Soto isn’t a monumental upgrade over Alonso (who they may still resign)?
KnicksFanCavsFan
@Karen
The Mets are not the better team. Yanks are looking to acquire a top SP despite having 5 good ones under contract already. The Mets might have been shopping at the Mercedes dealership but they look like their throwing used tires and Temu car accessories giving SPA roles to Montas and Holmes. You need to improve from a 89 win team that was had to mount a fantastic 2nd half just to win a week’s card bag. You still have to get past the Braves with a healthy Acuna and the Phillies. Cohen has the check book so let’s see what else he does.
Fernando P
@Reyday – Actually they do hand out rings to the World Series losers, as they were champions of their league.
To Clipper’s point, doesn’t matter since the Dodgers were obviously better than both the Mets & Yankees. Mets won more game, but Yankees games with Dodgers were much closer. Mets lost 2-3 games by large margin.
PoisonedPens
Who is “we” and why are you saying it as if you deserve some credit for signing Soto? What part of the team do you own?
KnicksFanCavsFan
@Rey
The Mets were 1-8 vs the Oakland A’s, Tampa Rays and Mil Brewers. Are all 3 teams better than the Mets?
Please sign A Z pitcher that threw 150 IP and a sub 4 ERA/FIP. Yanks have at least 3 of them and that’s not including the two injured guys that pitched well but threw me than 150 innings (Cole and Schmidt).
baseballfreak25
And now their signing Clay Holmes as a SP? The Mets are still way off from a serious run at the WS! Phillies, Braves and Dodgers and possibly Padres are still better all around than the Mets. Yankees will spend on pitching and probably Alonso and Hernandez. Trade for Bellinger and may even pull off a trade for Crochet. The Yankees will be fine….lets see how these $700mil contracts hamper further spending by these “super” teams. I’m thinking about 2-3 years in they are going to regret at least the Soto signing. If Ohtani can’t pitch the entire contract, it will be sad as well.
ReyDay
@Fernado C’mon now that’s not the type of rings we are talking about though is it ? Nobody asks how many WS appearance rings people have.
I don’t know why Yankee fans keep bringing up Dodgers though when comparing the two NY teams. Dodgers are miles ahead of both right now. But to your point I think blowing out the Dodgers 2x without their Ace who wasn’t fully healthy is more impressive than losing 4 close games out of 5 with 1 blow out.
ReyDay
Yankees went 2-7 against the Pirates, Reds, Nats. The point wasn’t to say Mets are better but that they are trending in the right direction. I don’t ever think I said Mets are better than Yanks once in this whole thread. I’m simply pushing back against Yankee fans and their ego’s saying Yankees will be better in the long run.
buffalobob88
But the Yankees were in the World Series & the Mets were home. You guys gotta get by the Dodgers first before “beating” the Yankees
ReyDay
Does being in the WS mean anything other than a lower draft pick and couple more bucks? You guys had to get thru KC and CLE lol that’s not much to write home about
KnicksFanCavsFan
@Reyday
Last I checked, the Yanks and Mets don’t play in the same division. Mets have much more heavy lifting to do, and the lux tax is in effect.
Yanks have a full rotation, that if healthy, I’ll take against any other AL squad.
Cole/Rodon/Cortez/Gil/Schmidt.
Mets have lost Severino and have to retain or replace Quintana or Manaea. That’s 530+ innings of a mid-3ish ERA.
They also need to replace our retain your starting 1b, DH and CF. Marte has missed 70 games each of the last 2 years. I guess they’ll move him to DH and hope he stays healthy.
Congrats to Cohen for issuing, what I view as, a $800 mil contract. Is he willing to spend another $250 mil on pitching? Another $150 mil on offense? We know the Yanks are willing to redirect at least half of their $760 rejected offer and, aside from replacing Soto, they won 95 games with the likes of Rizzo, Verdugo and Torres (who I like) and it’s not hard to replace their production via trade or FA in terms of options/dollars.
ReyDay
What do you mean another 250MM on pitching and 150MM on hitting. The total value of contracts don’t matter as much as AAV. Also this is not a year or two window the Mets bought its most likely close to a 7-8 year window with Soto. Being they still have close to 100MM to spend till they reach last years payroll, I’m gonna assume they are not done yet. But even if they just get Soto this year (which I doubt) we will still be in star FA mode next year.
KnicksFanCavsFan
@Reyday
Use common sense. Is the sports world floored because Soto signed a 1 year deal for $50+ mil in 2025 or bedbugs he just signed for $805 over 15 years? And let’s be honest, unless he falls off a cliff the Mets will pony up that extra $40 mil to prevent him from opting out. Of course it’s the totality of the contract. So to sign a Burnes or Fried or will likely cost about $250 mil and another $150 to replace Alonzo power production and at least a starting CF
Simm
You can sign two really good players for the price of Soto and not be locked in for a decade and a half.
If the Yankees make the right decisions they will be as good or better.
sultan of swat
Truthfully, probably 3 really good players (especially if they were willing to spend $700 million on Soto). Santander or Hernandez, Walker or Alonso, and Burnes or Fried. Maybe Bregman too.
Simm
Not per season though. Lifetime of contract sure.
Matt Nokes
No, there is no world in which the Yankees are better off without a 26-year-old stud hitter with the best batting eye since Barry Bonds. The FA available are “meh,” as they players on the wrong side of 30 of a much lesser degree of talent. There is a very real risk of a run-back of the 2014 post-Cano spending spree
KnicksFanCavsFan
@Matt
I agree that the Yanks are better off with the Soto than without. The mistake, however, is that for some reason, ppl think that would be the extent of what the Yanks would do. Clearly, they need to replace Rizzo at 1b, Verdugo in LF, and Torres at 2b and Holmes and others in the bullpen. They are also rumored to be interested in adding a 7th SP in Fried/Burns and moving either Cortez or Schmidt in a trade. So the Yanks can’t replace the 8War kind of production or his walk rate in one position. However, they now have, at minimum, $81 mil of off- the-books’ salary from 2024, not to mention any additional funds they might be willing to go above to send a statement.
So they can sign a Profar/Hernandez/Santander type for likely $20-$25 mil in LF. Trade for a Bellinger or sign a Walker for about $25 per @ 1b. Sign a Fried or whomever at $25-$30. Acquire a 3b like Bohm or Arenado at 3b and slide Jazz to 2b. Or they might roll with Jazz at 3b and give the job to rookie Caleb Durbin? If he’s real then maybe he can provide a better combo of bat, glove, and base running at 2b? Maybe they go cheap at 2b with the rookie and repurpose Torres’ money and build out the bullpen with a few signings. It quite possible to replace LF/1B/SP/3B/BULLY AND “just” add another $40 mil per short-term over last year’s payroll.
frankf-2
Cry harder.
KnicksFanCavsFan
– Sign Max Freid.
2nd choice Corbin Burnes
3rd Nat Eovaldi or Flagherty
– Sign Jurickson Profar for LF
2nd choice Santander.
3rd choice Winker (Good walk rate, low strike out and destroys RHP.
-Try to acquire Chad Bellinger @ 1b. Chad can be a backup for Dominguez in CF if the rookie struggles beyond the norm. Call up Rice.
2nd choice Christian Walker
3rd choice Carlos Santana on a 1 year deal with option. I like Ben Rice and would love to see him get a shot at 1B this the short-term option of Santana.
– Sign Jeff Hoffman
– Sign Tanner Scott
– Sign David Robertson or Kirby Yates.
Wild card: Acquire Bohm at 3b, move Jazz to 2nd and keep Durbin at AAA.
Old York
I thought the Yankees might take a shot at Paul Goldschmidt for a cheap prove it year.
Fred
Goldschmidt would hammer in New York behind Judge.
frankf-2
. Super old. Super on the decline.
KnicksFanCavsFan
With Judge, Stanton, and Goldy, the Yanks could save a lot on air conditioning. No thanks.
Yankee Clipper
I really like Walker but his age makes me a bit nervous. Hopefully, it would be short-term. Now get Fried or Burns and an OFer! C’mon Yankees, let’s go!
HumbleO'sFanWhoHatesYourFace
I smell some burnt taters coming your way this week. I think Burnes and Santander end up in pinstripes
bwmiller79
I could see the Yanks possibly ordering up a plate of Eggs Bregman or a Fried Pork Shoulder Sandwich.
HumbleO'sFanWhoHatesYourFace
Eggs bregman sounds good but I want the Fried pork shoulder sandwich in B’more. It will go great with Boog’s pit beef bbq sandwich
bwmiller79
Well I think it goes better with Gettin’ Old Cole Slaw but suit yourself. Don’t trade the Mayo.
HumbleO'sFanWhoHatesYourFace
I’ll keep this going lol… Wouldn’t trade the Mayo, he is on the future-of-our-club sandwich. Well at least the bat anyway, the glove needs work
Joe says...
I’m all for Fried but if you look at Burnes numbers, though still very good, they have been trending the wrong direction the last three years.
Yankee Clipper
I saw something on that Joe. Yeah, that is cause for concern, especially on a long-term deal….
Joe says...
Clip I did hear something funny this morning about the Soto deal.
It’s ok that Soto will give the Mets an extra 7 wins this year. Clay Holmes is going to give those wins right back.
Yankee Clipper
LOL! Don’t we know all too well.
KnicksFanCavsFan
@Yanks
I prefer Fried. I think he will age better. He’s not so dependent on his velocity.
Yankee Clipper
Yeah, any time I hear a Jimmy Key comp I get a good feeling, a la 1996.
LFGMets (Metsin7) #BannedForBeingABaseballExpert
Surprised the Yankees aren’t trying to spite the Mets by going after Alonso. If Alonso was really as good as people say, the Yankees would be all in on him. My guess is that Houston signs him
Canuckleball
Houston is currently searching the couch cushions to find the money for Bregman. They don’t have the money for Alonso.
Joe says...
Alonso is just more of what the Yankees problems already are. An unathletic, slow, poor defending righty power bat. No thanks.
LordD99
Sloppy seconds. He’ll return to the Mets when he sees his market not evolve to the level he hopes.
LFGMets (Metsin7) #BannedForBeingABaseballExpert
@LordD99 If I was the owner I’d offer Alonso 5 years 100 million. If he doesn’t like that then he can walk. Hes really not worth more than say Schwarber or Castellanos
KnicksFanCavsFan
@LFG
Yanks are trying to get away from high k rate righties. We already have Judge and Stanton. That should eliminate Alonzo, Teoscar, Goldscmidt from being considered.
JerseyShoreScore
Yankees Plan
Corners: Add one of Walker, Alonso, Bregman
OF: Add one of Teoscar Hernandez (FA) or trade for Bellinger or Seiya Suzuki
SP: One of Fried or Burnes
or
Two SPs: Flaherty, Buehler, Eovaldi, or other mid-tier SP options
RP: Sign Scott or trade for top tier RP
GhostofRandySavage
Or take Belli and Suzuki. I like this plan on paper more than just soto
bwmiller79
White Sox plan:
……………
……………
……derp…..
GhostofRandySavage
Their home park is just a hotdog stand at this point
bwmiller79
I can see Bellinger in NYC, be a fair replacement for Soto. Probably only have to send back a RP or a prospect if they take Bellingers contract off the Cubs hands. Bellinger can be as good or better than Santander, Hernandez, and Profar, all of whom are looking for multi-year deals, Yanks only have to committ to two seasons of Bellinger. It would be an interesting trade and addition to the Yankees.
KnicksFanCavsFan
@bwmi
The WSox fans deserve better ownership. This is a team in the 3rd largest market in the IS and they’ve never issued a contract larger thx 5/$75 mil. That’s disgusting.
KnicksFanCavsFan
@Jersey
I don’t see the Yanks going for mid-tier FA when they have Cole, Rondon, Gil, Cortez and Schmidt. Fried as another FOR guy make sense. Maybe a mid-tier FA which then allows them to use Cortez or Schmidt as trade bait for other things, but I think they can both be excellent 4/5 guys.
Dustyslambchops23
I freaking love Soto, but any team who had 600MM plus to him could improve beyond adding him with spending that money on 2-3 other players.
RussianFemboy
Every team soto’s been on, have gone to the postseason at least once, what 2-3 players can lead them to the postseason while combining to the same value as him?
Dustyslambchops23
Every team Russel Martin was on went to the playoffs does that mean he should get 800 million?
RussianFemboy
“lead them to the postseason while combining to the same value as him”
What two players on the market combined would be as good as Juan soto?
CravenMoorehead
Here’s the part of the contract people aren’t talking about.
His deal includes an opt-out after 5 years and no deferred money. If Soto opts out (which he very well could), the Mets can void it by increasing his annual salary in the final 10 seasons by $4 million…from $51 million to $55 million…taking the total value to $805 million.
It’s essentially an $800 million dollar contract.
ReyDay
I doubt he does tho, he’ll make roughly 255MM before hes able to opt out. I don’t see anyone that would be willing to give him a 10 year contract worth 510$ when he’s turning 31. And if he does decide to opt out that will be right around the time Elly De La Cruz will be a FA so Mets can either pivot to him or sign somebody else knowing they got Soto’s prime years for only 255MM
KnicksFanCavsFan
@Rey
Your missing the point. Soto doesn’t isn’t too officially opt out. The threat of of it is enough for Cohen to not even let it be a possibility. If he’s still an iconic hitter then I ldoubt Cohen or the fanbase will let him walk.
RussianFemboy
Pete Alonso is very overrated,
For a so called “power hitter” his career OPS is only .853.
Dustyslambchops23
In the last 3 years only 20 qualified batters have exceeded that mark.
RussianFemboy
@Dusty
alright?
But if you’re going to be considered an elite power hitter amongst the best in the game, that’s going to need to be over .900 consistently.
his slugging for his career is barely above .500 and his OBP is under .340
Now go look at REAL power hitters Judge, ohtani, yordan Alvarez…etc.
Those are REAL power hitters, Alonso is nowhere near as good as them.
Wanna know something else funny? Gunnar Henderson is 23 years old, and Alonso is 30. Alonso has been in the league 6 years as of next season. and Gunnar has only been in the league 4 years as of next season. and Gunnars WAR is only 3 less thank Alonso’s.
like I said, Alonso is one of the most overrated players in the league, and I stand by that, because its true.
also can I see your source for your info? Not saying you are lying, I would just like to see who’s on the list, thank you.
Dustyslambchops23
Yes judge, Ohtani and Alvarez are all better than him lol. Is anyone arguing that?
Is every hitter not good because they are not on that list?
Just go to stat muse and type in OPS in a time frame, pretty easy.
RussianFemboy
You’re missing the point, I was saying “power hitters”
Badfinger
Enough of these guys over 30 heading into their declines. Time to get younger and more athletic. Not sure how they can do that but that’s their job to figure it out.
Big whiffa
They can’t. They keep trading all their youth to win now
Dogleg62
Christian Walker at 1b should be the Yanks’ “plan C” option after losing out on Soto. (which has its silver linings) They should initially attempt to trade for LH-hitting Cody Bellinger to play 1b…and some OF…before taking on yet another 34 year old to add to the lineup. The trade will most likely require sending the Cubs a package that includes starting pitching, (and prospects) but the Yanks are eager to move on from Nestor Cortes, so he would headline any package to begin talks. I could then see the Cubs bringing back Rizzo to help at 1b next season in a move to appease the fanbase.
BaseballClassic1985
I like Bellinger, but he’s owed a ton of money the next 2 years if he doesn’t opt-out. I don’t think it would take top prospects to land him unless the Cubs ate some of the money he’s owed.
Dogleg62
He’s not cheap, but if the Yankees were willing to part with over 750 million dollars over 16 years, they can swallow Bellinger ‘s contract for the next 2 years.
Led Hoyer
Bellinger fills a lot of holes for the Yankees. He can play all 3 outfield spots and 1st. Hoyer already said they aren’t giving him away, I hope he sticks to his guns.
denistaylor
In the end, I think that Soto was overshadowed by Judge and preferred to be the big cheese on another team. The fact that he gets to stay in New York is a bonus. His problem now will be that he can’t get back to the World Series with the Mets as long as the commissioner is OK with the Dodgers signing all of the Japanese superstars. Should have stayed where he was.
unpaidobserver
Dont get me wrong I would love for the Yankees to suck but expecting guys in their decline phase to carry a team is a path to futility.
algionfriddo
Yanks dodged a golden bullet. Trade for Bellinger to play 1b & Robert Jr. to play CF. Avoid Arenado and over 30 guys.
rocky7
Bellinger might be an interesting fit, especially if Jazz is destined for 2nd base rather than CF, which allows Judge to go back to RF lessening wear and tear and where frankly he is a better defensive player…..however disagree on Robert JR…..the last thing the Yankees need is another player with the potential to be a difference maker but can’t stay on the field….which put Judge right back in CF…counter-productive….Agree also about Arenado…we’ve had enough with 3rd basemen who had their best years somewhere else, are expensive, and most likely are declining rapidly both defensively and especially offensively…….alternatively, they could stick Jazz at 3rd, and let Durbin play his way onto the team at 2nd…..
Doron
I for one, think the Yankees should create a super bullpen, signing Scott, Hoffman, Estevez, and Kahnle.
Slide Judge back to RF, Jasson to CF, make a hard play for Santandar and Alonso.
Trade options should be looking into Nolan Arenado (there could be a trade similar to the one that brought Stanton to the Yankees here, Arenado, like Stanton, controls this trade entirely with his NTC)
Bellinger is a secondary option, he is likely to cost just money next off season if he has a good or better season, and if he stinks, he opts in.
On the SP front, depending upon whether the Yankees add salary or not, 1 more top tier starter would not hurt at all, with Stroman or Cortez likely being traded to offset salary.
I also believe that Jose Trevino will be traded this offseason. The Yankee have 5 Catchers on their 40 man roster, and that is not likely to continue.
Losing out on Soto sucks, but with all due respect, NO!!
No one is worth that contract, and I think that the game is worse for it.
LordD99
Marginal interest in Walker, but would take him on a shorter deal, but some team will give him more. Zero interest in Bregman, Alonso or Santander. Age, cost and weakening underlying stats, and the latter two are poor defenders. All three deals can turn south quickly and hurt the team for years. Stay clear. They can’t replace Soto, but they collectively can build a roster that will be good. Sign a starter, there’s a couple of interesting trade targets and mid-tier free agents that will keep the Yankees in the 90+ win range.
BaseballClassic1985
I’d be happy with Walker, Fried and one of Santander/Hernandez/Bregman/Bellinger.
Not sure if Hal is willing to spend the money for all those players, but I could see it if they can trade Cortes and Stroman.
Sorinotsori
I’d love to swap stroman for bellinger, even if we need to throw in a kid or some cash. Or cortes haha. Bellinger fills a big need in CF. We can go from horrible defense to very good in 1 offseason. Get judge back in right, get a glove in the infield instead of lazyass gleyber, a GG level 1B in walker will make everyone better.
BaseballClassic1985
I totally agree. I don’t see the Cubs taking Stroman back, but there has to be some team willing to have him, especially if the Yanks eat a few million of his salary.
Cortes has value, too, if they need to clear payroll to sign other free agents. Let’s see what Cashman does now that Soto is gone.
desertdawg
Why would you leave the Yankees for a few million more, this has all the of the stink of the MLBPA they wanted that 50mil a year threshold by a player. The Players Union had Soto’s ear, the Mets are not the Yankees will never be, will always be the little brother. The Yankees are expected to be in the World Series year after year, the Mets not so much. What does this mean for a first baseman for the Mets, they going to make Alonso a 40 mil a year player now, of course not. They have a hole at first. They going to sign Walker now and where is there starting pitching going to come from. Mets have signed Soto and still have a few holes to fill. They do have Soto/ Lindor lineup now but does that compare to Soto/ Judge don’t think so. Nope this signing had all the fingerprints of the Players Union pushing the Soto signing to the Mets.
dasit
even if the offers were identical the mets have a smarter GM, a better farm system and an owner determined to dominate the game. soto wants to win so the deal may have included assurances that the mets would pursue at least 1 front-line starter. imho the mets are far more likely to win a title in the next few years
Led Hoyer
As an outside observer the mets future looks pretty bright. I’d take Stearns over Cashman too. The Yankees have made exactly one World Series appearance since 2009 and Soto was a big reason.
quimmy
The Yankees GM just traded a blossoming ace in Michael King and a prospect who was then flipped for Dylan Cease, for a one year rental. They aren’t running the best shop in the Bronx. The future is brighter for the Mets. Way better farm system and apparently more family friendly to its players.
whyhayzee
I like how Yankee fans equate the offseason to walking into a 7-11 and buying whatever you want. It doesn’t work that way. The Red Sox and the Dodgers helped drive up the price for Soto until the Yankees had to cut bait. That was totally by design. When it is in the best interest of a franchise to stymie the Yankees, they will. So, sure, walk into your 7-11, but don’t be surprised if the shelves are empty.
rocky7
The Soto signing was going to be an auction from Day 1….he and his agent are mercenary types….not saying that as a negative accusation, just a modern day ballplayer whose going to extract the last dollar in a contract…that being said, exactly who said the Dodgers and Red Sox “drove up the price”.?…..Maybe the Dodgers were kicking the tires a bit, but the Red Sox seemed earnestly engaged in trying to get Soto to sign….everyone knew this contract once in the mid $600 million range was going to be bid up by Cohen….it was an auction and Cohen wasn’t going to lose……
BaseballClassic1985
Yeah, the Dodgers offering $600 million drove up the price lol
whyhayzee
I said they “helped”. A larger potential market means a higher price. Simple.
Sorinotsori
I was fine either getting him back or not. Now the job is go get Christian walker, maybe do a undesirable contract swap w stroman for bellinger, get him in CF and judge back to right. Let the kids play IF, I’d like to see durbin and peraza battle for 2B or 3B. LF Teo or Santander. And of course 1 more pitcher, obviously burnes or fried would be amazing
YanksPhan42
I’ve been saying on here all along that although I love Soto and he’s the second best lefty hitter in MLB…..punt on that insane contract and spread the money out. Now let’s see if Cashman can make the RIGHT moves.
Corbin Burnes would be my top priority. I hear they like Max Fried better which is a mistake.
I’d like to see us trade for Bellinger to play LF. Lefty hitter with a short contract could mash and be a value. Grab Pete Alonso to play 1B if the price is right.
Jazz (3B), Judge (RF), Bellinger (LF), Alonso (1B), Martian (CF), Stanton (DH), Wells (C), Volpe (SS), Durbin (2B) = plenty of offense
Cole, Burnes, Gil, Rodon, Schmidt = best rotation in the AL
This is doable too…..not a pipe dream. Get it done!
BaseballClassic1985
I’d rather have Walker over Alonso. Shorter deal, less $, better defense from Walker. Alonso a marginally better hitter.
YanksPhan42
Walker’s age worries me.
BaseballClassic1985
Me, too, but 1st basemen don’t suffer the wear and tear of other position players. Max 3-yr deal for Walker. Alonso may be younger, but he’s not athletic and he’s going to cost a ton more than Walker.
You never know, but I can’t see Hal and Cashman giving Alonso a huge money deal.

Yankees plans:

It would absolutely kill them to retool for one year but maybe it should be considered. See what you have in Dominguez, Rice, etc. They’re gonna keep ending up with LeMehauis, Rizzos, and Stantons. Then you could throw the checkbook at Kyle Tucker in 2026. Work out some trades that get you close to MLB guys in the meantime that will be ready for 2026. Idk I’m clearly not a Yankees fan but I think that’s the way, you guys just can’t stomach it. I’m perfectly fine seeing you make the same mistakes over and over again
mlbnyyfan
No excuses. The Yankees have over 100 million off the payroll. Go get 4-5 Quality players
Trade DJ and Stanton creates more money available.
We will see if Cashman can truly build a team
RussianFemboy
@mlb
No team wants Stanton or DJ.
mlbnyyfan
@Yanks. Great plan. I don’t want Walker for first base. I don’t want Alonso either. Maybe Bellinger for first base and get a different Outfielder that can play defense. Not Santander or Hernandez. Does Verdugo come back on the very cheap??
RussianFemboy
@mlb
Why don’t you want Walker for first base?
He’s a great defender, and a great hitter.
dasit
i don’t trust this front office to pivot in an orderly fashion. history shows they will be reactive and saddle themselves with more dead weight (see: ellsbury, jacoby)
BaseballClassic1985
Yanks have Cole and Judge on huge deals, they aren’t retooling. They have some decent, young players on the roster (Volpe, Wells, Chisholm, Schmidt, Gil). They are going to supplement with a few free agents. Orioles still aren’t as good as the Yankees at this point in time.
Bird4Life
They will always have guys on huge deals. It’s a one year thing. But you got Fried now. Hope he’s not another Rodon with his elbow scares
Mikenmn
Arenado hasn’t hit well recently, and there’s no reason to expect that at his age, he wouldn’t turn into another Donaldson (on the field). You don’t want the contract of an aging-in-the-decline phase player.
BaseballClassic1985
Yeah, pass on Arenado
dasit
for all the reasons you cite he fits the profile of a yankees panicky addition
jerseyjohn
No thanks on Bregman. I’d keep Jazz at 3rd and fill 2nd internally. Give me Bellinger for Cf, and let Dominguez play Lf. Fried, someone at 1st (not Alonso), and 2 more arms for the pen.
dasit
losing soto is a disaster because the front office has proven itself incompetent at constructing a well-rounded roster and tends to panic rather than pivot. i expect them to overpay for 2 of walker/santander/bregman. my preference would be trade for bellinger, sign fried, resign gleyber, improve the bullpen, prey that jasson and spencer jones are for real and go after tucker in 12 months
BronxBombers23
If you want to strengthen your Rotation, just fckng convince Sasaki! For what are you there, Cash??? Trade for Crochet. Honestly? I’m not high on Burnes and Fried. Buehler only wants to sign a short term deal and should be very affordable.
Melchez17
Trade for Bellinger and sign Bregman
SS Volpe
2B Jazz
RF Judge
CF Bellinger
3B Bregman
C Wells
DH Stanton
LF Dominguez
1B TJ Rumfield
mlbnyyfan
@Melchez. Is TJ ready? Do you trust him more than Rice. I’m not sure I want Bregman but I do like your idea.
andyger63
Glad Yankees didn’t sign Soto for that kind of contract. 15 years at $50 million a year is ridiculous. Soto’s good but he’s not THAT good. Spend the money wisely elsewhere. Build a team, not just around one or two players. Judge is enough.
Salzilla
I’ve said this before, but I fear Walker will end up as Rizzo 2.0. I may be wrong and I like skillset, but my fears are that based on age and injury history–not as bad as Rizzo, but still. I’d rather them pay more for an Alonso or trade for Naylor.
Teo I’d my preferred OF choice right now. Arenado over Bregman for me, too. And one solid SP (Fried works) and RP (i heard Presleys available).
There’s a lot of work to be done….
This morning, though, I’m honestly less mad at the FO for Soto. Dude went and proved it was 100% about the money. The Yankees offer was solid, can’t fault them. Se la vie.
Begamin
The Yankees offer was the classic underbid while knowing it wont take just so they can say “we tried!”. Theyve been outbid on just about every top FA with exception of Judge (where NY would riot) and Cole (Cashman’s “Moby Dick”). Hal prefacing mid season that they cant afford soto makes me think the moment it went over 400MM they were out and that offer was purely to save face in NY media so people go “oh cant fault them!” lol
Salzilla
Yeah, I’m going to say no. You don’t offer 760 million to save face. That would be a heck of a bluff call if Soto accepted, wouldn’t it? Nah, definitely not the case here. The 75 million bonus was the kicker. Not sure if Boras asked them to challenge it or not, but a limit was reached, a hell of a limit, too. Other clubs didn’t even touch it.
Matt Nokes
Honestly it looks pretty bleak. The choices are overpay for aging B/B+ talent or basically suck next year. Tbh it would make sense to just blow the whole thing up. Cole and Judge deserve a chance to make a legit run and the Yanks farm system sucks — and if they’re going to have top talent in the future, they’re going to need to adopt more or a Rays/Oakland model since they are no longer competitive for premium free agents with Cohen ready to sign people at will.
Begamin
I think im of the rare company that thinks Yanks should just tear it down and rebuild. Pushing the envelope for salary every year just to have half the lineup or more with an OPS+ under 100.. even with Soto it wasnt enough. The team was so top heavy offensively im surprised everyone for the most part had their moments to aid in the WS push in the postseason. But thats not reliably sustainable.
I have the bad feeling theyre just going to panic throw a bunch of bandaids on this team and overpay every single one to do so and still fall short. Like if we’re gonna have Verdugo and Trent Grisham just about every day, no need to spend 300MM to do so
Doppleganger
Why not move Judge to 1B and find a CFer instead?
jerseystrongsports
Soto will be missed. But the defense was a weak spot. And Soto was not a plus there. Belleger is good fit first and center, improves defense. Take a chance on Bulher. And go reliever. Weaver did good, but I think a better set up. Sleeper pick up Diaz good first base and 3rd base. Little power good contact and on base.
RJMac
Losing Soto isn’t the end of the world as that contract will be an albatross for the Mets in 10 years, if they’re lucky (could be sooner). They’re hoping they win multiple titles while he’s in his prime. The issue is losing him, Rizzo and Verdugo and replacing them according to your article – with right handed bats. Haven’t the Yankees learned their lesson not having enough left handed bats at Yankee stadium in particular?
mlbnyyfan
Mets honestly need to trade Gilbert,Acuna and Baty for Skubal or Crochet. I don’t like the Mets rotation with Montas and Holmes. Trade for an ace or now go get Burnes.
slider32
Yanks need to add quality to their rotation, relief pitching, and 1B, Walker/Burns/Bellinger and 2 upgrades in the pen..
Nick W
Since San Diego robbed us in the Soto trade maybe the can trade us Arrez for next to nothing, they are looking to shed salary and he’s the type of hitter we need
