The D-backs have been in the market for a high-leverage reliever throughout the offseason, and they’re among the clubs with interest in right-hander Kirby Yates, per Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. The Snakes have checked out several options on the trade market but balked at the asking price for Devin Williams — since traded to the Yankees — and their interest in Cardinals stopper Ryan Helsley might be moot if St. Louis ultimately opts to hold him.
Arizona GM Mike Hazen has left no doubt about his team’s desire to add a closing option this offseason. “I still feel like a back-end bullpen guy to help out with [Justin Martinez] and with [A.J. Puk] and those guys, I still see that,” Hazen said in a radio appearance back in early November. “I thought when [Paul Sewald] was closing, we had the best version of who we were, frankly. … But, we know [Martinez and Puk] can close, too, so we’ll see.
Yates, 38 in March, is fresh off a dominant rebound campaign with the Rangers, for whom he saved 33 games while pitching to a 1.17 ERA over the life of 61 2/3 innings. Yates earned his second career All-Star nod, fanned 35.9% of the opponents he faced, and issued walks at a 9.6% clip (higher than average but generally offset by the gaudy strikeout rate).
The 2024 season was Yates’ second consecutive year with 60-plus innings pitched, but injuries have hindered the righty at various points in his career. He threw only 11 1/3 big league innings from 2020-22; he was limited to six appearances in 2020 thanks to an elbow injury — one that wound up requiring Tommy John surgery a year later in 2021 (his second TJS operation). That procedure wiped out his entire 2021 season and the majority of his 2022 campaign.
When healthy, Yates has been a lights-out late-inning option in recent years. He’s the epitome of a late bloomer, as he didn’t truly solidify himself as a quality big league reliever until his age-30 season and didn’t break out in full until his age-31 campaign with the Padres, in 2018. Since that breakout, Yates boasts a scintillating 2.21 ERA with 93 saves, 30 holds, a 35.5% strikeout rate and a 10% walk rate.
Yates would (clearly) fit the Diamondbacks’ desire for a bona fide stopper at the end of the bullpen. The question is whether he’ll fit into the budget. After last year’s brilliant showing, he’s in position to command an eight-figure salary, perhaps even over a multi-year deal if a team isn’t scared off by offering two years to a 38-year-old who’s twice required UCL surgery.
Hazen said in the aforementioned radio appearance that he expected payroll to be in the general vicinity of 2025’s $173MM mark. RosterResource currently projects a $160MM payroll for the Diamondbacks. Yates could command the bulk or perhaps even the entirety of the remaining budget, though it’s always possible that other trades will impact the payroll. The D-backs have received trade interest in their young outfielders and in their starting rotation. The club surely still hopes to shed at least a portion of the $22.5MM owed to Jordan Montgomery.
A multi-year deal for Yates would be nearly unprecedented for a reliever this old. As shown in MLBTR’s Contract Tracker, the only free agent relievers in the past decade to sign multi-year deals beginning in their age-38 season are Jason Grilli and Darren O’Day, both of whom signed for a total of $8MM or less. The only real comp for a pitcher of this age commanding a multi-year deal at a premium rate is Daniel Bard’s two-year, $19MM extension with the Rockies back in July 2022 — a deal that obviously did not pan out.

As a diehard dbacks fan please don’t! Hes to old and in that park he will blow games like Sewald

If the Dbacks sign him, dying will be much easier.

Is he to old or too old?

Even with a lock down closer (and I don’t see Yates being that again) they’re going to need some offense. Naylor was a nice get but they’re still down Walker, Pederson and most likely Grichuk.
El Kabong
What Pederson and Grichuk provided cannot be understated. Pederson with an OPS of .908 (+151) and Grichuk .875 (+140.) That’s significant production to replace.
In September, Grichuk hit .404 with seven home runs, and his OPS of 1.408 led all players with at least 50 plate appearances in Major League Baseball. He showed up when the games counted most. He can surely help someone in 2025.

Rotin,
I disagree. The focus is on what was lost in free agency, but if you shift focus to what remains and recognize that even minus Walker, Pederson and Grichuk, the goal is NOT to be the No. 1 run offense in the league again, but rather having enough offense and enough pitching to get into the playoffs.
If the focus is on having the statistical top spot like last year in runs produced, then the Dbacks might be able to do that, but more likely won’t given their financial limitations. And even if they do reach No. 1 run producer status, remember they were No. 1 last year…and they missed the playoffs.
So, I say readjust the focus. The focus is on making the playoffs. Biggest problem last year was pitching, both starters and relievers. A significant contributor to the problems with the starters was injuries and ineffectiveness. A positive regression to the norm for the starters is expected to help correct those problems. For the relievers, there is a great core, but they are relatively young, especially Martinez. Bring in a veteran (older) reliever with. Closer experience to stabilize that back end of the bullpen, and expect the volatility of relief cores to again shift back toward the positive.

Pavin Smith is a decent platoon option for right handed pitchers (not Joc Pederson level—but not many are). D-backs do need a solid DH option against lefties, but I agree pitching is a higher priority
Angels & NL West
Could Suarez, Marte, Gueriel and Alexander serve as DH platoon options vs LHP with Smith getting the majority of ABs vs RHP? This could get Suarez, Marte and Gueriel off their feet a little while keeping their bats in the lineup.

Who else needs a closer? Arizona, Toronto, Texas… And who’s left – Tanner Scott & Yates? Buehler?
MLB Top 100 Commenter
Buehler was signed by Red Sox to be a starter.
Cubs, Rangers, Blue Jays could use closers. Otherwise, they’ll have a hodge-podge, tangled webb and hanging chad.

@MLB – Dodgers missed opportunity to pair Buehler with minor league starter (Jackson) Ferris. Ferris-Buehler
El Kabong
If the Dodgers trade Ferris to Philadelphia, the Phillies can pair him with Wheeler.
MLB Top 100 Commenter
Maybe he can pitch against Walker in 2026? At least Ferris can pitch to Merrill, Chourio and Holiday. That’s a lot of action Jackson. Add in Reggie and it could be the Jackson 5. He’s a smooth operator.

Ah, the baseball offseason.
Life is a long preparation for something that never happens.

I hate to toot my own horn, but the uncredited William Butler Yeats quote I posted deserves some love. In addition to being Yeatsy/Yatesy, it captures the essence of baseball’s off-season and lends some badly needed culture to this forum.

dan – Red Sox are in desperate need of a closer. They’ve got three guys they will be trying out for the role …
Slaten who has never been a closer and has only 55 career MLB innings ….
Chapman who hasn’t been a closer since 2021 ….
And Hendriks who has pitched a total of 5 innings over the past two years.
Would love to have Helsley if he becomes available. Estevez has had very brief success as a closer, Hoffman is unproven but has been strong the past couple seasons.
MLB Top 100 Commenter
The price for Helsley will be more than you would like. Maybe Casas and Bleis for Helsley and Arenado with just a little cash.
Fever Pitch Guy
MLB – I’m picturing a trade deadline deal, after the Red Sox Closer By Committee fails and the Cardinals fall out of the playoff chase.
Red Sox won’t move a key player for a closer, it will be mid-level prospects or perhaps taking on Arenado’s contract like they did with Lowell/Beckett.

those might need a closer but teams like the brewers or the mets or others may have a closer but could use a setup man or someone that could potentially step in if the closer is a bit shakey as diaz was at times last season.

There are other Closers on the free agent market and there are 2 or 3 possible Closer trade candidates. So the situation isn’t completely dire. Miller, Helsley , Robertson,, etc.

Chase Field is a tough park to make it as a closer. I think Martinez is first man up. Nobody is takng the full Monty contract.

I’d like to see the Tigers take this guy on a one year deal.

Doesn’t Chase Field play as a neutral park for hitters and pitchers? I feel like I’ve heard/read that in recent years, but I’ve yet to confirm the numbers via statcast, etc.

I’m not sure the scarecrow act would work out at Chase Field.

Martinez is nasty > Yates

I’m surprised the Orioles aren’t publicly interested in Yates. The need for a bullpen arm is there after (shockingly) non-tendering both Coloumbe and Webb. Pairing a big arm like Yates with the returning Bautista would provide the O’s with the big back end of the pen arms they need. I’m genuinely shocked they haven’t spent big on the pen – maybe they’re waiting it out like everybody else – since the pen with a returning Bautista should be a big strength of the team. Bautista, Yates, Cano, Seranthony, Akin, Suarez, Perez, Soto would easily be among the best, if not simply the best, bullpens in baseball. Since they (presumably) have a tremendous amount of payroll space it seems crazy to not sign a couple big arms from among the Yates/Hoffman/Scott/Estevez/Sewald/Minter group to filed the game’s best pen alongside the best young position core in the game. I’m not sure how they solve starting pitching given the injuries to Bradish & Wells but Grayson/Efflin/Sugano/Kremer/Povich isn’t good enough. If they invest that (relatively) little bit of money in the pen and add a theoretically available SP like Castillo, Lopez, Keller, etc. then they’ll be plenty good enough to hold down the fort until Bradish and Wells come back. I feel like I’m crazy sitting back watching the O’s do nothing while such an obvious and easily manageable path to not only contention but being a World Series favorite is in front of us. But I’m sure it’s just managing the market in a prudent and deliberate fashion….it’s just difficult to endure from a fan perspective.

Brewers violated the closer market value with their deal. Don’t think Helsley is going anywhere and may even be extended. After all, birds are teeing off from the women’s tee box competing in the nl central.

I see now what the plan is very easy, if you like the bullpen in 24 you will love another year of bullpen by committee for 25. Yates is an 37 yr old that had his closer time about three or four years ago. So this is what it comes down to no top flight closer, but we will get an over the hill Mark Melancon replica to get your hopes up for the 2025 season. Oh boy can’t wait.!! I guess spending a few more of Kendrick money is out of the question we have to settle for a 37 yr old journeyman closer right off the scrap heap. Keep digging D’Backs I’m sure you can dig up another lame arm pitcher that has seen better days.
