Free agent right-hander Clay Holmes appears close to making a decision on his next team, reports Jayson Stark of The Athletic. Teams that have been in talks with the former Yankees closer have gotten the impression that he’s on the verge of choosing among several offers, per Stark, who adds that Holmes has been negotiating with “a long list of contending clubs.”
Holmes, 32 in April, spent the past three and a half seasons in the Bronx, combining for 217 2/3 innings of 2.69 ERA ball. He fanned 26.6% of his opponents and limited walks at a sharp 7.7% clip along the way. Holmes established himself as one of the game’s premier ground-ball pitchers in that time as well, leaning on a sizzling sinker that averages 96.5 mph to induce grounders at a nearly 68% clip.
While Holmes broke out as a reliever in the Bronx, however, there are reportedly several teams that have interest in bringing him aboard as a starting pitcher. Which role he prefers is surely something Holmes has weighed extensively in free agency — particularly if most of the clubs he’s spoken to are expected contenders. Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported last month that the Mets are among the teams interested in seeing Holmes in the rotation. The Athletic’s Matt Gelb reported just a couple days ago that the Phillies are interested in Holmes in a relief role. While free agency typically boils down to the “money talks” adage, if Holmes had similar offers from a pair of contending clubs who want to use him in different roles, that’d add another layer to the decision process.
In 2024, Holmes tossed 63 innings of 3.14 ERA ball with a 25.1% strikeout rate, 8.1% walk rate and 65% ground-ball rate. He piled up 30 saves, bringing his career total to 74, but also ceded ninth-inning work to teammate Luke Weaver late in the season due to an alarming — and highly out of character — 13 blown saves on the year. He pitched quite well in 13 postseason appearances, logging a 2.25 ERA, 25% strikeout rate, 10.4% walk rate and 53.6% grounder rate in a dozen innings. Holmes was frequently thrust into leverage spots, evidenced by a 3-1 record and five holds over the course of those 13 playoff outings.

My condolences to the fan base of whichever team signs Holmes.
As long as he’s not coming back to the Bronx, have at it. Ahahahaha!
It’s not his fault Boone kept putting him into high leverage situations. Even Clay Holmes was saying, “what the hell is this guy doing”?!
Has the feel(see Lugo) of a Preller move. Not against this just not a sexxy pick up. Think the Pads may have luck converting him to a starter.
The decision we have all been waiting for.
Guess the theory behind starting him is it gives his team 8 innings to dig out of the hole vs him destroying your hopes in the 9th?
Perfect picture for it
This has AA written all over it.
It does not.
He’s signing with the Mets.
They certainly need bullpen arms
The Mets signed him to start
If he throws strikes, we don’t want him. Signed Jose Alvarado
Red Sox….perfect for “buy low Breslow”.. Swingman to a starter gradually over the course of the first three months of the season….unless Hendricks isn’t up to the closer job.
They have Criswell, Whitlock, Winckowski and possibly Crawford for that depending on what rotation moves are made. If Hendriks isn’t up to the task Chapman and Slaten are the next options
I love how every fanbase thinks their closer is the worst ha ha.
It’s easier to remember a few blown saves than all the games they close out lol
@wire
Clay Holmes led the league in blown saves, with 4 more than the CP in 2nd. He made it extremely easy to remember all the blown saves.
Well there are a lot of factors there but the above comment was just a general statement about fans and closers.
Craig Kimbrel and the Orioles say hello
But it sounded like, Ka Kaw !
Kimbrel was excellent in his last season with the Cubs, then again the first year and a half was mediocre. But that first half of 2021, he was absolutely on point, even his advanced metrics were fantastic.
Was such a luxury having Kirby Yates last year. Pretty much was automatic all year.
Everyone remembers the blown saves, never the routine. Yankee fans were spoiled for almost two decades with Mo, everyone will pale in comparison to a Hall of Famer…
Clay Holmes, voted the pitcher most likely to give Yankees fans an ulcer or heart attack. The door is this way, sir.
Ross can’t make up his mind is chasing the blonde supermodel who has no interest In 4 eyed stats guy.
As long as he doesn’t close, he’s a good reliever. A good defense behind him also greatly helps, he’s not a swing and miss guy, not really.
As a Yankee fan who actually paid attention to the games last year, I’ll miss him. He was miscast as a closer due to the volatility with his balls in play. I’ve never seen somebody suffer so many absolute horseshit tough luck innings with weakly hit grounders, dribblers, swinging bunts, broken bat bloop singles. Mix in the occasional error from his middling infield defense (I’d say all were below average besides volpe for the majority of the season), and you’ll find his unsightly blown save total.
With you here. Bad luck coupled with Boone’s overuse in those spots did him in with the fans.
Oh yeah forgot to add that in, the overuse was his undoing at least a few times. The time he really faltered in the playoffs was definitely one of those moments
I remember that’s exactly how the Mariners came back and beat the Yankees one night off Clay Holmes: dunk hits, light contact, hit ’em where they ain’t. And Holmes was getting frustrated. You described it perfectly.
Orioles.
Wow, Fisher is going to really bring Holmes to Sacramento
He’s going to be a disaster without the Yankee pitcher strike zone that turned his career around.
The Yankees get all the special amenities don’t they: 3 inches off the plate strike zone, differently made baseballs that fly out of the park, and please don’t check their bats because you might see all the cork.
Clay, come home…..
“Highly out of character”? The guy has been shaky since he made his 1st all star appearance with the Yanks.
I am still saying going to the Houston Astros.
First order of business for Clay. Trimming the unibrow.
Wait why do Yankee fans seem to hate this guy? Numbers look great.
Because he started the season as the best closer in baseball and quickly fell apart. So a rough last four months were carried by an amazing first two. I think he’s a strong reliever. The Yankees heinous defense coupled with very very poor management by Boone really made Stankees fans hate him. But we’re not talking about the brightest minds among the baseball fandom here…
He was never the best closer, Bautista is.
Because he led the mlb in Blown saves. With home field advantage, WS outcome could have been different. Bye bye Holmes Good riddance
Real Yankee fans have to deal with a lot of casuals masquerading as real fans. I posted above about how I liked him, tho not as a closer.
Let’s just hope that the Yankees are not included in the teams he’s considering.
Great job Mets. You can have him
