The Tigers claimed lefty reliever Bailey Horn from the Red Sox, according to an announcement from Boston. The Sox had not previously announced a DFA for Horn, so their 40-man roster count drops to 39.
An Auburn product, Horn has bounced around the league as a pro. He was drafted by the White Sox, traded to the Cubs, dealt back to the White Sox and then flipped to Boston. The 26-year-old southpaw pitched in his first 18 big league games this year. Horn allowed 14 runs (13 earned) over 18 innings. He recorded 13 strikeouts, walked 10 and surrendered five home runs.
Throwing strikes has been an issue for Horn throughout his career. He has walked nearly 13% of batters faced over four seasons in the minors. That’s bordering on untenable, even for a middle reliever. A few teams have been intrigued by his raw stuff, though. Horn averaged 95 MPH on his fastball during his big league look. He still has a couple option seasons remaining, so there’s time for the Tigers to try to smooth out his control if they’re willing to keep him on the 40-man roster.

Toot, toot.

A reliever. Dear Scott Harris…”Bailey Horn” is not how “Devin Williams” is spelled.
Tigers3232
@Motor City I’m holding judgement til after Fetter has a chance to work with him. He’s done quite well with numerous pitchers. Hopefully it continues.
Motor City Beach Bum
Agree. I was just joking. Horn could be the next Tyler Holton or Sean Guenther for all I know. They obviously saw something they liked. Having said that…it would be great if they got a power arm like Williams for the back end of the pen.
Tigers3232
By no means would I be upset if Wiliams was a Tiger. The question is how much are they willing to up the payroll. Addressing rotation and adding adding a couple proven bats seems to be higher priority.
I’ve noticed Colin Rea’s name mentioned as a SP they ve shown interest in. Would not b upset to see him as a fifth starter but was expecting a bit more. Kind of hoping for Flaherty and Boyd.
Motor City Beach Bum
Totally agree. I’m hoping theyvaddress all their needs this year and not on the cheap. Rea would be okay as an extra arm but if I had my pick it is Flaherty as well. Buehler, Verlander and Heaney would be interesting pickups too. They have to get a big bat that doesn’t screw up the chemistry, whether by signing or trade. Finnegan might be interesting for the back end of the bullpen too.
Tigers3232
I really like the thought of Verlander returning. Obviously if healthy even at his agent he’s a plus. Then there’s his presence for the young arms. When he was here before you would always see him sitting with the young guys such as Ray and Porcello, just seems he has alot of experience and tips that could be if huge benefit to young pitchers.
If Verlander’s career ended right now his plaque likely has an Astros hat. Another season or 2 here could possibly change that.
As for Bueher and Heaney, I’d be nervously optimistic with Buehler. He’s likely gonna command a decent contract and he hasn’t been all that effective since 2021. Heaney I’m just not a fan of. I’d rather them sign Rea over him. Flaherty I really think would be ideal. He seemed to thrive here with Fetter and his #s dipped a bit when he went to LA. Boyd looked really good last season and I’ve heard his wife still does charitable stuff locally, seems that would be good fit for both sides.
Bat wise I’m hoping for Bregman but I’m expecting news to come out at any time of him resigning in HOU. OF bat they need, I ll be happy to see anything that looks to be of added value to the lineup.
Motor City Beach Bum
Good point in Boyd. He was a real community oriented guy during his previous tenures. Him, Rea and Heaney all have previous experience in the open as well. Back end/bulk innings guys.
Verlander siging in Detroit needs to happen and one good bat at least…Bregman, Adames, Walker, Santander or a trade.

This is a good thing for Sox fans.

The Justin Wilson Era begins….!
Old York
Hope the kid’s got thick skin—Detroit ain’t exactly been a walk in the park lately.
Motor City Beach Bum
You mean Detroit who went 86-76, made the playoffs, won a round and had a great bullpen. If you meant he might not be good enough to make their bullpen this year then I’d agree.
Tigers3232
Old York You might want to catch up wherever you left off. You clearly missed from Aug 10th on, who knows how far back from there.
Old York
@Tigers3232
The city has been a mess and in ruins since they tore down old Tiger Stadium.
For Love of the Game
Old York apparently doesn’t get out much. Detroit is much improved, both as a city and as a baseball team.
Tigers3232
Downtown Detroit has actually had a decent little renaissance in the over 2 decades that have past post Tiger Stadium.
Tiger Stadium former location itself is a pretty cool little spot now. The field still there ringed by townhouse condos and one of the sides businesses and storefronts. Still a prominent part of the thriving Corktown neighborhood.
New tallest skyscraper well into construction to soon take top spot of skyline. Little Caesars Arena opened few years back and home to both Pistons and Wings. Helping connect Midtown and the campus of Wayne State to rest of downtown in a more lighted lively manner. The former site of Joe Louis Arena is under development providing new energy on the riverfront.
Clearly you should try educated yourself prior to making assumptions. Especially off such stale old misbeliefs that are 30 yrs out of date…
Tigers3232
Another huge step in progression I forgot to mention, was winning the war of attrition. Time is defeated a generation still entrenched in bigotry who by default cling to the misnomer that every big city or urban area is a derelict rundown dump. The couple generations that have followed have helped fuel the local economies in these areas. Many going for entertainment and nightlife some even moving to and becoming part of the communities. Progress is being made in these areas your generation shunned and led on a path backwards due to archaic beliefs derived in hate and ignorance.
You know the same way of thinking as your resistance to accept advanced analytics and the power of math….. You can resist change all you want, but time has you on the ropes 😉

LMFAO!! I’m sure Old York has been to Gigi’s. He was probably left scorned and that’s why he’s so negative.

Also, Bryan Mata and Isaiah Campbell have non-tendered. Since they were DFA’d and non-tendered, they do not get exposed to waivers and can be signed to a minor league deal.

Does anyone know if there is a publicly available site which shows waiver activity?

This is a 26 year old lefty with a cannon. We’d gladly take more of these free, uncut gems off your hands. The Tigers keep gettin smahter!
Motor City Beach Bum
I’m sure someone made that joke about Tyler Holton when the Tigers picked him up. Until Fetter turned him into one of the best relievers in baseball.
alwaysatiger38
Tigers big move of the offseason!! Outside of getting the 2014 band back together( Verlander, Scherzer, JD Martinez) I don’t expect anything major. Chris Ilitch still has scorch marks from Baez. Last time the Tigers were in contention or thought to be, Ilitch spent some money that offseason. Someone mentioned Rea from Brewers, I think that kind of signing will be our ceiling. With that said I hope I eat my words. Lol
Motor City Beach Bum
I hope you are wrong too or we will all be disappointed 😉 There should be lots of contiued growth from the in house options (Keith, Greene, Carp, Jung, Meadows) which will lead to more offense, but they definitely need to supplement it. Harris said Ilitch would open the purse strings when they showed growth and that time is now after the great season they just had. Time to put his money where his mouth is.
Dtownwarrior78
This is going to be the year we see whether or not Chris Illitch is about winning or not. If he doesn’t loosen the purse strings and spend on this up and coming roster we have and fill some of these holes with established MLB talent, then we’ll all know he’s only about the money and could not care less about winning. He was the one that said he’d spend when we were over the contention hump. Well I’d say we passed that test this past season! So it’s time to put up our shut up Chris! And if/when he does open the wallet, I feel a whole hell of alot better with Harris calling the shots of who we sign rather than Avila! If we sign the right players to add to our core of Carpenter, Skubal,Greene, Meadows, Jung, Sweeney, Jobe etc then the sky is the limit! GO TIGERS AND LIONS!
Rothbard
There aren’t many free agents this year who would compliment this young core. Some of the crafty veterans would be perfect. Guys like Lynn, Scherzer, and Goldshmidt are probably the right fit. However, the big ticket items will all be way overpriced. Soto is Juan Gonzalez 2.0, but he’ll be paid like he’s Barry Bonds. And Willie Adames has the same risk that Baez had. I love their current strategy and I hope they stick to it with a few high upside vet signings.
