The Red Sox are adding a pair of players to their 40-man roster ahead of tonight’s Rule 5 protection deadline. Right-hander Hunter Dobbins is having his contract selected, per Christopher Smith of MassLive.com. The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier adds that Boston will also select outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia. Those are the only two players the Sox are adding, per Speier. They’ll need to open a pair of 40-man spots in order to make them official.
Boston selected Dobbins, now 25, with their eighth-round pick in 2021. He started 21 Double-A games and another four in Triple-A this past season, logging a combined 3.08 ERA with a 22.9% strikeout rate and 9.2% walk rate. Dobbins was the organization’s minor league starting pitcher of the season and ended the year ranked 26th among the team’s farmhands, per Baseball America. He’s 93-94 mph with his heater on average and pairs the pitch with a slider, splitter and curveball.
The 21-year-old Garcia (first name pronounced yos-TIN-son) split this past season between Low-A, High-A and Double-A. He laid waste to pitchers at the former levels (.258/.365/.517, five homers in 104 plate appearances in Low-A; .311/.371/.627, 16 homers in 229 plate appearances in High-A) before posting more modest results at the most advanced of his three stops (.263/.320/.386, two homes in 126 plate appearances).
Garcia is a power-over-hit prospect who’s played center field but seems likelier to settle into a corner. He walked in just 7.2% of his plate appearances this season against a 21.7% strikeout rate. That marks an improvement over the 30.4% strikeout rate he logged in 2022 and the 25.5% mark he posted in 2023, but the increased contact has come at the expense of his formerly plus walk rates.

I thought Clo was short for Clorox and thought it was awesome first name. You don’t screw around with someone name Clorox.

Leave to bloom to select a player who strikes out 5 times more than he walks, and draft a pitcher Whois 25 just making the 40 man.
GASoxFan
Bloom is gone and buried, but, neither of these guys were top draft picks. Most players taken in their slots never even wind up getting selected at all so…. meh.
The fact they made it this far is a bonus already.
deweybelongsinthehall
Bloom did what Henry wanted: looking to find gold scraping nickels together. Story must have been ownership overruling Bloom as that signing is just so inconsistent with Bloom’s m.o. Granted there are few pitchers ready but look at the way the minors are now stocked. He did a good job getting talent be it MLB trades (Pivetta who while never finding stardom was a steal), minor league deals (Abreu, Hamilton – both deals were panned at the time) or through the draft. None of the prior GMs or Presidents were hamstrung like he was. I’m guessing the Cardinals will win their division by 26.
GASoxFan
I disagree Dewey.
The prior GMs and Presidents got all star level players while winning and picking at the bottom of the draft order.
Bloom tanked the team and picked high in the draft, even 99% of the posters on this board could succeed at that IMO.
all in the suit that you wear
Bloom only had a really good draft position in 2021. His picks were as follows:
2020: pick 17
2021: pick 4
2022: pick 24
2023: pick 14
GASoxFan
I’d say he had excellent in ’21, but better than usual for Boston in 20 and 23 as well. Everything relative of course.
I know i also put a little more value on slot bonuses than some others but, you really can’t understate what slot value improvements give you for leverage and going overshot in later rounds.
In 2024 the 14th overall pick slotted above $5m. 29th? Was only $3m. Then you get to go over that by another 5% without penalty.
So, Dewey’s premise was bloom was hamstrung unlike prior *boston* GMs, when in reality, if you look at the tradition of winning under epstein, dombrowski, the *winning* GMs/Prez had much much less to work with.
The only draft bloom had to work with lesser draft assets is sort of ’22.
Not that it matters that much, but, a skilled GM builds a strong farm while consistently winning.
all in the suit that you wear
I think Bloom did great later in the draft. He got Roman Anthony (Red Sox top prospect) at pick 79 and Kristian Campbell (Baseball America’s 2024 Player of the Year) at pick 132. There is usually only a consensus top 5 or 10 prospects in a draft. After that, it takes skill to draft good players.
GASoxFan
You help make my point though Suit: Anthony signed for over double the slot value for where he was chosen. That’s why I value draft order/slot bonuses and international pool money more than some fans do. It’s just one extra tool at your disposal, and, also why I was so mad at bloom for blowing the CBT that year he did by messing around and taking the penalty.
It also gets to why I think rev sharing recipients get more help building in the farm via their comp balance picks and boosted pools.
However, sometimes these guys come down to luck. That’s why Anthony wasn’t picked higher by Boston than he was as well. Or, look at the NFL. Purdy almost went undrafted altogether and as the last pick in the draft they said why not? Sometimes you just get lucky.
all in the suit that you wear
Dewey has it right. Bloom had great drafts and a lot of great picks deep into the draft. It’s too bad people like you don’t give him any credit. If they did these drafts over again, knowing what we know now, Anthony and Campbell for example would be first round picks. Bloom got them after the second round, making them very smart picks.
Bruin1012
There’s a certain percentage of people on this site that hate Bloom and can’t admit that he did anything right. The fact is this farm system is as good as it’s been in near a decade and maybe as deep as any Red Sox farm. This was done during the Bloom regime. No question that Breslow inherited a loaded farm system from Bloom.
JoeBrady

LOL! I mention this all the time. It’s an average draft position of #14.75.
JoeBrady
In the 5 drafts, we pick up 4 top-25 prospects, plus Yorke=> Priester. You won’t a lot better production than that.
FWIW, there is a reason why the Cards hired him as POBO.

It’s like that in the real world also. You cannot think a bit negatively or positive about someone. You have to be all-in one way or the other.

Mildly surprised they didn’t protect Monegro. I guess they think since they kept him in High A all year no one will take him. He dominated High A was ready for AA but they didn’t move him up,makes sense now. I still think someone is going to take him he may not stick. Mildly surprised they protected “ the password” doubt he can stick on a 26 man all season.
