The Mets have declined their $7.75MM team option on right-hander Phil Maton, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. The 31-year-old will receive a $250K buyout and return to free agency.
The decision isn’t much of a surprise, even though Maton pitched quite well for the club down the stretch this season. The veteran righty posted a 2.58 ERA with a nearly identical 2.57 FIP in 28 2/3 innings of work after being acquired from the Rays in early July, with a 26.5% strikeout rate against a 5.3% walk rate. Those excellent numbers may have been worth considering the $7.5MM decision on his option if they were held throughout the season, but that unfortunately was not the case.
Not only did Maton struggle badly in the playoffs, with an 8.53 ERA in six appearances for the Mets this season, but his brief tenure with the Rays was something of a disaster. His 4.58 ERA in 35 1/3 frames with the club was 12% worse than league average by measure of ERA+, and his 5.63 FIP was 42% below par by measure of FIP-. He struck out just 19.7% of batters faced during his time with Tampa Bay, but even more concerning was the fact that his walk rate ballooned to 11.8% during that time. In all, that leaves Maton to enter free agency with a platform season that casts him as a solid but unspectacular middle reliever with a 3.66 ERA and 4.26 FIP in 71 appearances this year.
That’s more or less par for the course for Maton throughout his eight seasons in the majors. The right-hander sports a career ERA of 4.16 (100 ERA+) with a 4.00 FIP and a 25.9% strikeout rate against a 9% walk rate. The best season of Maton’s career came just last year with the Astros, his third season in Houston after the club acquired him from Cleveland midway through the 2021 campaign in the trade that made Myles Straw a Guardian. In 2023, Maton struck out 27% of opponents while walking 9.1% en route to a 3.00 ERA in 66 innings of work.
A club that buys into Maton’s 2023 performance and his stretch run during the regular season with New York this year could potentially look at the right-hander as a late-inning option, although it’s possible he’s best suited to serve as a steadying, veteran presence in a bullpen like those of the Tigers, Cubs, and Rockies that has relied heavily on relatively young and inexperienced players. All three of those teams figure to be in the market for relief help this winter, but that can also be said of virtually every team in baseball. That should leave Maton comfortably in position to land a big league deal this winter, even if it doesn’t come at an AAV north of $7MM like this team option would have if exercised.
As for the Mets, Edwin Diaz remains locked in as the club’s closer and players like Jose Butto, Sean Reid-Foley, and Alex Young all impressed with the club this year. While it wouldn’t be a shock to see them look for bullpen upgrades this winter (particularly from the left side), they’ve already begun to make additions with their recent deal to land right-hander Dylan Covey. The signing of Covey, who has struggled in the majors but spent time both as a relief arm and a starter, could signal that the Mets don’t plan to spend much of their considerable payroll flexibility this winter on relievers as they look to reconstruct their rotation, retain first baseman Pete Alonso, and get into the thick of the bidding for Juan Soto.

A decent bullpen piece but not worth $7.75MM
10centBeerNight
Was really solid – until the postseason. Wouldn’t mind him back at a lower price point
padam
After the postseason I don’t want to see him anywhere in the state.
Krujo
As a Met fan I wouldn’t mind him in da Bronx
whyhayzee
Four straight years of 65 or more games probably factored into his postseason funk.
Sorinotsori
Eh his postseason numbers I’d chalk up to fatigue. He was getting dogged pretty hard down the stretch due to the Mets lack of other quality options and consistent sense of urgency. I think Hefner is an extremely underrated pitching coach and he may have unlocked something for maton. I wouldn’t be against my Yankees taking a flyer.
carlos15
Hefner is brutal, the bullpen constantly walks guys and pitch behind in the count to virtually everyone. There was no improvement or change in approach by anyone. Hefner bears some responsibility for that.
myaccount2
@carlos15- No, he does not. It’s not like he’s telling them to throw balls, get behind in counts, and walk guys. That’s completely on the players for lack of execution. When you look at some of the names in that bullpen is it really that surprising?
Sorinotsori
I’d say manaea, severino and Peterson all performed better than expected. The guys that stunk might just stink. Idk if you can say any Mets pitchers “underperformed” this past season
padam
@carlos – Hefner will be getting a nice holiday gift from Manaea after the change he suggested for him. Considering the team was loaded with 4th/5th rotation starters for the year and went as far as they did, I’d give him some much deserved kudos.
Lindor's Bodyguard
Movin’ on.

Looking forward to Lindor, Soto and Alonso in the lineup next year. World Series ring in the bag brother!

Taking the over on -15 DRS with that latter combination at 1B & RF….

And it won’t make much difference as the offense will far outweigh the defensive shortcomings. Besides, Alonso has become a decent 1b, and the analytics just aren’t reflecting it. The range isn’t great, but the ball picking on throws is top notch.
mlb fan
“Alonso has become a decent 1b”…There’s no way to refute that. Pete put up slightly over 2 W.A.R and adds power to any team he’s on. The problem is Pete(and his agent)are seeking a $200M+ contract that is more in line with a perennial MVP candidate, not a guy who tied for the 6th highest W.A.R on this year’s Mets.
At least 2 of this year’s Mets(Vientos/Iglesias)put up more W.A.R than Pete Alonso in half as many at bats. Alonso on a representative(not crazy)contract will be an asset to any team.
But Alonso on a $200M level deal, will more likely be an albatross on the team he’s on because he’s taking up unwarranted payroll space. $200M for a 2 win player(Tied for 6th on team with Severino)is completely nuts.

@Ma4170
Two DHs playing the field? Sincerely, good luck to you. 3rd place in your division, despite the highest payroll? Potentially 800 million on Soto & Alonso? But in Alonso’s case it’s all down analytics? I agree he’s improved but only from poor to mediocre. Just like the Padres and the Yankees you couldn’t beat a Dodgers team with – at best described – a patchworked rotation. The Mets have holes at 2B & and the entirety of the outfield given Nimmo’s health.
Maybe it’s just me only watching 15 or 20 Mets games a year.
ZackMorris
A’s fan opinion..
SWIFTLY DISCARDED AND MUTED
Ma4170
If you watch the Mets a lot, you’ll see that Alonso‘s glove is very good and saves a lot of outs picking balls at first base on tricky throws. in fact, I think he’s the best in all of baseball at that if I’m not mistaken. His range is limited and his throws are not very good, that’s what hurts his defense. But he’s definitely gotten to an average level at 1b.
The additional runs that Soto would provide on offense far out number the ones he would cost on defense. He’s just an elite bat now. I’m not sure how that will look in eight years, but I don’t think most teams care right now.
The Mets almost made the World Series with Marte in RF, and believe me, he’s a disaster out there right now on defense
Joel from NY
Nimmo’s health is fine. Hole at 2nd? You kidding me? From among McNeil, Acuna, and Mauricio and Iglesias, I’ll think they just might manage. Soto is a DH, I see. Turn the volume knob down, can you?
Joel from NY
Good point about Alonso. I think you’re exaggerating about Marte.
Ma4170
It surprised me how bad he was out in RF. It got to a point when anything other than a routine flyball was hit his way, i’d hold my breath a bit. Even analytics like Outs Above Average reflect it… he was second to last in all of baseball.
BaseballBrian
He will be replaced by obscure journeyman right hander Phil McCracken.
Player to be named in the future 2
Dr. Hook?
BaseballBrian
No, he’s starring in a production called The Medicine Show.
Bill M
McCracken would be at the butt end of the bullpen
jvent
1st smart thing that the Mets did, if Soto wants $700 mil than let him stay with the Yankees and go after Santander, Burnes, Buehler, Treinen, resign Manaea, Winker and Iglesias, I really don’t want to resign Alonso for 7-8 years knowing that we have 2 very good young 1b men in the minors, maybe sign Christian Walker for 2 years instead.
ZackMorris
I literally cannot wait for our Mets to sign Soto and listen to the absolute cope from Yankees fans.
Mets won 2 games against the Dodgers, they won 1. Mets also swept the Yankees this year because they are the dominant NY team.
Acoss1331
Hoyer will give him 2 million for one year. That’s probably as high as he’d be willing to give Maton
Old York
Last year, I thought he was one of the better options to select for the bullpen as he had some decent upside but he really wasn’t the same. Of course, there was going to be some regression but I didn’t see him drop this terribly, though.
HalosHeavenJJ
I know bullpen arms are volatile but considering his sokid overall career I’d bet on him being good again next season.
Attystephenadams
If I was Stearns I’d re-sign him for 1 year at $5 million. That’s about what he’s worth.
mlb fan
“If I was Stearns”…Starting in ’22 Maton has been ridden pretty hard. He was very effective so he got used a LOT. I’d suggest he be limited to about 26 or 27 appearances in each half and I think he’ll be fine.
Especially for the $5M you suggested. He’s been a very effective reliever(for the last few yrs) for the most part and someone’s going to guarantee him $4M+.
ZackMorris
I’m glad, he almost cost the Mets the series against Milwaukee. Now he can go pitch for some scrub organization like the Marlins or White Sox.
ckc12537
I think he should sign with Houston again. 2 years $15 million, perhaps the 2nd year some kind of vesting option or with performance incentives for a 3rd year option.
I always liked him with the Astros, has some command issues tho
Bill M
I’d be very surprised if he gets an offer anywhere near that. 1 year $6.3MM at the most, from some team desperate enough to make such an overpay.
ckc12537
ok
The McNasty1
Good…he was absolutely horrible. Cost the Mets too many games.
Acw0rmj
Guards should bring Maton back
LFGMets (Metsin7) #BannedForBeingABaseballExpert
Maton is Drew Smith but slightly better. He even looks like him. Two awful pitchers. Maton is atleast good for mop up duty. Good riddance
