The Mariners’ deadline acquisition of Justin Turner yielded positive results, and the two parties have already had discussions about a reunion for the 2025 season, general manager Justin Hollander tells Daniel Kramer of MLB.com. “We’ve already had discussions with JT and reiterated our interest that we expressed at the end of the season,” Seattle’s GM said.
Turner, who’ll turn 40 later this month, signed a one-year, $13MM deal with the Blue Jays last winter and was flipped to the M’s in a July trade sending minor league outfielder RJ Schreck back to Toronto. He’d shaken off a dismal May slump to post strong numbers in the summer and continued to swing a good bat in the Emerald City down the stretch. Turner finished out the season with a .259/.354/.383 batting line, including a .263/.364/.403 slash (126 wRC+) in 48 games and 190 plate appearances with the Mariners.
That marked the 11th consecutive season in which Turner has provided offense at least 15% better than league average, by measure of wRC+. His power numbers and once strong defensive ratings at the hot corner have both deteriorated, but Turner maintains quality bat-to-ball skills and keen plate discipline. He fanned in only 17.6% of his plate appearances — his second straight season with that exact rate — and walked at a 10.9% clip that represented his highest mark since the 2018 campaign (when he walked in a career-high 11% of his plate appearances).
Turner’s recent teams seem to think he can no longer handle third base on even a part-time basis. The Jays gave him just 32 innings there in 2024, while the Mariners played him for one lone frame. He spent only 57 innings at third with the Red Sox in 2023. At this point, he’s a pure first baseman or designated hitter, but he handled himself well in 326 frames at first base last year, drawing slightly positive marks from both Defensive Runs Saved (2) and Outs Above Average (1). He logged similar marks at first with Boston in ’23.
There’s no telling how Turner would hold up for a full-time slate of innings at first base, but it’s unlikely he’d be asked to do so. In all likelihood, he’d split his time between DH and first base wherever he signs, with far more time at the former than the latter (and perhaps an occasional emergency appearance at third base or second base).
The Mariners don’t have a set option at first base at the moment. They’re reportedly looking to add either a second baseman or third baseman — Josh Rojas and Dylan Moore can platoon at the other spot — as well as a solid bat that can handle some first base. Seattle does have lefty-swinging Luke Raley as an option at first, though he can also mix into the outfield corners on days when any of Randy Arozarena, Julio Rodriguez or Victor Robles need a break. Raley will likely see some time at designated hitter, too. Turner would make a natural platoon partner for Raley at first base, but he still hits righties well enough (.261/.354/.375) to slot in as a DH even when Raley starts in the infield.
Turner would also fit the Mariners’ ongoing desire to reduce their perennially poor team strikeout rate. Seattle’s 26.8% punchout rate was the highest in the majors this past season, as their efforts to curb their contact woes last winter clearly didn’t have the intended effect. He’d also likely fit into what figures to be a relatively tight budget. The Mariners’ payroll is expected to rise next season but not by leaps and bounds.
As it stands, RosterResource projects the Mariners for a $152MM payroll — a number that could drop depending on trades and the fate of some potential non-tender candidates in their arb class. That’s already a slight uptick from last year’s $144MM payroll. Turner should still command a solid deal but could be in line for a pay cut as he approaches his 40th birthday on the heels of his lowest home run total since becoming a full-time player (the shortened 2020 season excluded).

Would be nice to have a vet presence and solid bat pop in the lineup. He was good for us the last 2 months of the year
Can we please get a DH?
He is an improvement from what we got previously at 1B, but not the big hitter this team needs. He is my number 5 or 6 target at 1B behind Walker, Alonso, Santander, Yandy Diaz and Josh Naylor. The team is likely too cheap for the first 3, but could trade for Naylor or Diaz who I think offer substantially more upside over 41 year old Turner.
Fever Pitch Guy
Can – Agreed, the offense won’t be that improved with a 40-year-old who put up just a .737 OPS this year.
The M’s really should go after O’Neill, if he can stay healthy he would mash against LHP while bouncing between OF and DH.
And he would give a discount because he’d be close to home.
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
Naylor is the perfect fit because we don’t have any above average lefty batters (excluding Cal)
We can’t keep relying on Luke raley (he wasn’t that bad), dom canzone, Rojas, etc for being our lefties
Can we please get a DH?
I’d say Raley is a strong lefty (but is a mandatory platoon player) and I think JP will be solid again (not elite, but average to slightly above average). However, I agree that we could use another lefty in the lineup. I just think it will more likely be at 2B (Lowe, Donovan, Young and Kim are lefty options).
Stevil
Raley was great once they started giving him consistent PAs vs. RHPs. He’ll almost certainly be in the lineup on a regular basis.
But yeah, they need more than just him and Cal. Canzone isn’t likely going to be on the team. Crawford and Rojas are the other lefties., but I hope they don’t rely on Rojas as the strong side of a platoon.
Can we please get a DH?
I’d take Canzone over Haniger, but ideally that spot goes to someone better than both of them.
Stevil
If it were my call, I’d try to find a fourth outfielder that could play 1B vs. LHPs, which is why Bouchard interests me.
RodBecksBurnerAccount
Luke Raley had a better year than Josh Naylor did last year lol.
Canzone couldnt’ stay healthy but I’d remain patient with him. He’s still very young and could be a spark plug.
Stevil
For a team with a limited window for contention with its current core, I’d argue Seattle can’t afford to be patient with Canzone any longer.
He has options, so they could keep him in Tacoma if they don’t trade him.
RodBecksBurnerAccount
“any longer”
They got him at the deadline in 2023 and he was hurt most of this year, it’s not like he has been on their team years.
They are not relying on him to be a starter. He’s a 4th/5th OF. If he doesn’t do well in ST, he will break camp in the minors. He has no trade value coming off a down/hurt season.
Stevil
They optioned him last season right before rosters expanded.
A year and a half isn’t a lot of time for a rebuilding team, but for a team that’s trying to win now with limited cash and a lack of talent, it is.
He still has options, so he may very well stick around as depth, but I don’t expect him to be on the opening day roster.
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
I hope we get enough momentum to sign Kim, he would be a big gamble but would be like ichiro for us
Yet that would mean having Stanton pay a little more which is probably not possible under any circumstances
We could trade Castillo to the braves for an ok prospect to free up money for Kim (both Kims would work)or Christian walker or a lefty pitcher like yusei kikuchi
Stevil
Seattle will almost certainly have to gamble on someone. The list of needs is greater than the budget will likely allow.
But every gamble we’ve seen lately has been limited to 2 years or less. Haniger, Garver, Pollanco, Arozarena…
It really feels like they’re positioning themselves for a potential rebuild if things don’t work out this year, so my guess is that they’re more likely to go cheap on rebound candidates and ready-now prospects, with maybe a short-term veteran or two.
I hope that’s not the case.

Imo The M’s should take a hard pass on the 2B from the KBO- H Kim.
The Mariners are not ‘1 KBO 2B away’ from winning a WS! Speaking of 2B Its ironic that the M’s are constantly trying to find a new 2B each year when that position, traditionally has so few really good hitters that are actually “impact bats!” Plus the Roster already has 4 guys who can play at 2B- Rojas, Moore, Bliss, Young and L Rivas. Go find 2 corner INF ers who can thump it, a 1B who can share a 4th OF role much like Big Nuke, and a power hitting 3B. I’d even be happy with the 3B we traded away last yr!!! Miss you Geno!
Besides H Kim would also be taking potential A-B’s away from Ryan Bliss and Cole Young. Both of those prospects imo have higher ceilings than Kim. The KBO is a step down from the NPB. Seattle is in the market for players now. Not projections
ayrbhoy
Ah make that 5 guys to play 2B! Haha can we tell I was the student who was either late or missing in Maths?
Stevil
I personally don’t think Hye Seong Kim is a fit, but both Jerry and Justin have been clear that they’re looking for a second baseman. They should be looking for a third baseman and DH as well, plus a platoon partner for Raley.
Bliss is destined for utility role if he sticks around. That reminds me, Moore is a free agent after the 2025 season, barring another extension.
Young isn’t that close. I expect him to start 2025 in AA. He’s still just 21.
Getting back to Moore, his value is in his positional flexibility. Rivas is likely seen similarly.
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
Well we all know the mariners can’t have everything and it would take another rebuild in order to win 100 games in a season
But… if we take a route like the nationals or rangers where we are a hot wild card team… we can cheat the system
Also I think young could play SS or 3B
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
Rivas would not be on the major league roster of most teams but in the PNF we are true to the blue and true to the AAA
rct
Why not? He hit well there and he won’t cost a lot. Plus he’s a nice clubhouse guy. Added bonus is if they’re terrible at the deadline, you can trade him.

1/$11M?
TheGr8One
If he plays 120 games + at first I’d take that. If it’s closer to 50/50 I’d be closer to 8. Seattle won’t be the only call he gets for sure.
Fraham_
counting on a rojas/moore platoon everyday is already setting them up for failure
Can we please get a DH?
As long as they are only expected to be in the 9 spot, they are okay for next year. We need to fill 1B/DH with a 3/4 type hitter and add a solid 2B option first.
Chester Copperpot
That is a VERY weak platoon (which are not ideal to begin with) and you don’t have much behind them if one of them misses any time due to injury. 3B is a “must add” position.
Can we please get a DH?
You have Bliss and Young as the players behind them with whoever is brought on to play 2B likely able to move over to cover 3B.
If the Phillies trade Bohm, he would make sense, but otherwise 3B does not have many realistic options and you can do worse than a slightly below average bat with gold glove caliber defense and strong baserunning out of your 9 spot.
Stevil
They need regulars for 3B, 2B and DH, plus role players.
If they end up with a new regular first baseman, it’s likely a sign that they’re going cheap elsewhere.
ayrbhoy
I think they’re going to platoon Rojas and Moore as Utility players who will each see the majority of their playing time in the INF at 2B. They’ll get a new 3B.
I’m choosing to believe Dipoto’s hands were tied when he sent Eugenio packing last yr. I’m convinced the ROOT Sports fiasco was just used as a bluff to (once again) allow the Owner to reign in his payroll. Don’t get me started! I’m also convinced Dipoto wishes he STILL had Geno’s presence in the lineup and locker room for 2025. So go get yourself another 30HR/80+RBI 3B who eats Pitchers for breakfast okay Jerr? They’re everywhere

Can’t Amazon buy the team and Re Name the stadium?
They have positive cash flow
Boeing is short on cash right now so skip them.
TheGr8One
In theory they could in 2044 when the T mobile deal is up.
So to answer your question no it’s not that easy
Chester Copperpot
So, our stadium is pink for another 20 years? Cripes!!

Fear not it’s likely we will put a team out there that stank enough T-Mobile might pull the name early

While we’re at it can MLB ban all rebuilds? Believe me I understand the concept of a sensible payroll, and teams have benefited from a rebuild- HOU of course forced its fans to watch multiple 100 loss seasons. What about the CWS though? MIA? PIT? etc. Have their rebuilds worked?
If MLB is TRULY interested in gaining more new fans – make teams owners put a competitive team on the grass. Abolish Tanking, have a competitive payroll floor that allows all teams have talent on the diamond
Remember- that is a conscious decision.
TheGr8One
You can’t abolish tanking to do that the league would need roster control of the teams. You can take the benefits of tanking away and baseball has done that with the lottery

Would really like to see us sign him for one year. Been in the playoffs many times and won a World Series.
DarrenDreifortsContract
His power has always been inconsistent and now with him turning 40. His days as an everyday starter are numbered. He would still make a solid utility player though.
Mekias0
It’s no longer inconsistent. It’s more like non-existent now. Even when he struck the ball as hard as he could, it would barely clear the wall.
That being said, the rest of his bat profile is fairly good. Is it worth paying 10-11 million for a 40 yr old 1-tool guy? Maybe? Not exactly exciting though.
ayrbhoy
Works for Garver haha
waldfee
The Mariners equipment manager already has nightmares of rosin-stained Turner jerseys sticking to everything in their immediate vicinity.
Stevil
Hollander ticked off a lot of fans with his comments, because while discussing the state of the Mariners, he also said, quote, “If you remove something for your club and you add something of equal value, you haven’t really moved the ball forward,”. Then said “We’re looking to move the ball forward”.
I actually like Hollander, but this was kind of funny, because when discussing Mitch Haniger and Mitch Garver, he said “We anticipate both those guys bouncing back and being better than they were this year.” .
Well, how do they plan to ‘move the ball forward’ with the same cast, with exception to perhaps a new second baseman?
The answer: They don’t.
I think he was saying exactly what he had to say. He’s not going to bad-mouth players currently on the roster and he’s not going to make the team sound desperate. I still don’t expect the Mitches to be back, but especially not Haniger. There just wasn’t any sign of hope for a rebound (and he was relatively healthy last season!).
I would welcome back Turner, but would they lean on a 40-year-old to handle a large role for 162+ games? Keeping in contact makes sense for both. I doubt they see each other (team and player) and Plan A.
The key for me is getting at least two regular bats in the lineup and tightening up with role players. And that’s just the offense. The bullpen needs just as much work.
That said, we’ve heard all the right things before the action starts for several years now and Mariner fans have been left disappointed and/or discouraged after the countless promises that proved to be empty words. Will this offseason be any different? Will they actually move the ball forward.
I, personally, will prepare to be disappointed, but hope to be surprised (positively).
Can we please get a DH?
I agree strongly. I like JT, but a well balanced roster cannot have JT, Haniger and Garver on it. If we could move on from Haniger and have JT take that spot (competing with Robles on which is Raley’s platoon partner and which is the full time player), that would be great.
However, the team would still need to address the 1B role and 2B in addition and I highly doubt we address all 3 (and I have accepted that Rojas/Moore will be at 3rd).
Stevil
Turner would likely DH vs. RHPs and take 1B vs. lefties.
But then there’s second and third.
Can we please get a DH?
And you need someone to DH vs LHP. If we keep Garver and Haniger, I guess it would default to one of them, but that’s not very inspiring (especially because Garver should ideally be catching a significant chunk of those games and Haniger is just not good).
Stevil
That’s less of an issue, but I personally would prefer a regular DH, specifically Peterson.
Can we please get a DH?
You run out of roster spots: C – Cal + Garver, 1B – Turner, 2B – Target, SS – JP, 3B – Rojas/Moore, OF – Julio, Robles, Randy, Raley, Haniger is already 12 and lacks bench speed/defense.
Stevil
Oh, to be clear, I don’t want Garver, Haniger, Rojas, Rivas, or Canzone.
If they have a regular DH, who can play the OF or 1B in a pinch, and a fourth outfielder who can play a little 1B as well, the team would have plenty of flexibility.
ayrbhoy
Stevil- can you not post so quickly!? You’re making the same points I wanted to make! Word fur word!
My offseason wish list is also 2 impact bats (1B/DH and 3B) and 2-3 high leverage RPers. – I don’t ask for much. Throw in J Turner while you’re at it Hollander. Our hitters still have some Pitching problems to solve – JT is good at that
BlueSkies_LA
Hoped Turner would get a curtain call with the Dodgers, somehow. Seems like a hopeless long shot now.
Acoss1331
You guys have Muncy doing a decent job, at least from what I saw in the playoffs, at 3B. DH is taken and Freddy has 1B so no place to put Justin.
BlueSkies_LA
Like I said, a hopeless long shot. JT was a huge fan favorite in LA.
BigRedMachine
It would be nice to bring J. Turner back for his leadership, influence, etc. That cannot mean that the M’s go fwd with a 1st base platoon of Raley/Turner. They need to pursue the likes of J. Naylor and/or Yandy Diaz. They need more, as we found out this past season.
Zippy the Pinhead
So tired of this 3B platoon nonsense, but I have other questions. 1) Can Rosi Sasaki only be signed using international bonus pool money? If so, then the M’s don’t have much to offer. 2) Do you trade Cal Raleigh when his value is at an all-time high, plug in Harrison Ford (and hope), and get that 3B, 2B, and LHRP you so desperately need?
Acoss1331
If Justin doesn’t mind playing for a really bad team, he’d be a good bat for the White Sox. Good clubhouse influence and a vastly better hitter than most on the roster.
