The Blue Jays have no interest in rebuilding after this year’s last place finish. Toronto made that clear by only dealing rentals or role players (i.e. Isiah Kiner-Falefa) at the deadline. As part of that renewed effort to contend, general manager Ross Atkins shot down the possibility of a Bo Bichette trade.
Asked by MLB Network’s Jon Morosi how he’d respond to inquiries from other teams on Bichette, Atkins replied that it’d be “an easy no” on the Jays’ end (X link). The GM has downplayed the possibility of moving his shortstop or infield mate Vladimir Guerrero Jr. on a few occasions in recent months.
It’s a logical stance for the team. While Bichette is entering the final year of his contract, a trade this winter would be selling at the low point of his value. The two-time All-Star is coming off a terrible season. He hit .225/.277/.322 over 336 plate appearances. Bichette had three injured list stints and underwent postseason surgery to address a fractured right middle finger. The Jays will hope for a return to the form he showed between 2019-23, when he was among the best shortstops in baseball.
Bichette is under contract for $16.5MM next year. It’s the final season of the three-year deal that he signed to buy out his arbitration window. A rebound would position him to cash in as a free agent when he enters his age-28 campaign. He and Guerrero are both on track for free agency next winter. It looks highly unlikely the Jays will keep both players for the long term.
As they try to turn things around in 2025, the Jays will pencil Bichette back in at shortstop. They’ll need to make other moves to improve after a 74-88 showing. Upgrading a bullpen that ranked 29th in MLB with a 4.82 ERA is the most obvious target area. Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith writes that the Jays are also going to be involved in the starting pitching market.
Toronto projects for a starting five of Kevin Gausman, Chris Bassitt, José Berríos, Bowden Francis and Yariel Rodríguez. Right-hander Jake Bloss, acquired from the Astros in the Yusei Kikuchi deadline deal, might be the top depth option. It’s not a bad group, but Rodríguez and Francis haven’t pitched full seasons as starters. Adding a more established starter could have a trickle-down impact on the ’pen, as Rodríguez worked in both capacities and could excel in a multi-inning relief role if the Jays added to their rotation.
On the position player side, the outfield stands as the biggest question. Toronto doesn’t have a clear starter in left field. George Springer is penciled in as the top option in right field, but he’s coming off a middling year at age 35. Daulton Varsho is ticketed for the lion’s share of playing time in center field. They’ll probably need a short-term stopgap with Varsho recovering from September rotator cuff surgery. Atkins told MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian and Keegan Matheson (X link) that the Jays don’t expect Varsho to be ready for Opening Day, though it doesn’t sound as if he should be sidelined too far into the season.
Atkins indicated the Jays aren’t likely to make a big move behind the plate, telling Bastian and Matheson that adding a catcher is “not a priority” (X link). Toronto is set to give the bulk of playing time to Alejandro Kirk. They reacquired Tyler Heineman via late-season waiver claim to serve as Kirk’s backup.
It does seem they’re open to adding at either second or third base, however. Nicholson-Smith reports that the Jays have shown early interest in the top free agent second baseman, Gleyber Torres. The Yankees allowed Torres to hit the market without a qualifying offer, so a signing team will not forfeit draft compensation. There’s a wide range of free agent outcomes for Torres, who hits free agency coming off a relative down year. Most of that can be traced to a dismal April, as he hit well from May onward and continued to produce during New York’s pennant run. He has a case for three or potentially four years going into his age-28 season, but the infielder could prefer a shorter-term arrangement to get back to free agency after a better overall walk year.
Toronto has a collection of internal second base options, none of whom has a ton of MLB experience. Will Wagner is probably the internal favorite after impressing in 24 games to close his rookie season. Leo Jiménez, Davis Schneider and Ernie Clement could also vie for playing time. Torres brings a higher floor than that group. Atkins and his staff will weigh whether they want to allocate significant resources to the keystone when they have so many other areas to address over the next few weeks.

Watch vlad and bo leave Toronto in 2025 for nothing

It’s what I expect. This front office has to be the worst in baseball. Other than the Rockies but that should be without saying of course

The Angels wish to throw their name into the list of worst front offices!!!

Vlad wouldn’t go for nothing but yeah, if they trade Bichette that would be an exceedingly stupid salary dump.
At the very least give him half a year and see where the Jays are at, it wasn’t long ago that they were a consistent playoff threat.

100% the new GM is going to be given nothing to work with.

Thought they initially said he’s guaranteed to go?
Toronto has been a dumpster fire of wasted talent. Another rebuild incoming
bigdaddyt
What about prime Vlad,Bo, Simien, Ray, Walker, Kirk, Romano and Springer +++++++++absolutely wasted
To now be in luxury cap limbo with one of the weakest rated farms with a team that has maybe 1 over priced bullpen arm that’s it if Romano can’t come back With Cabrera being out-righted Green is the only mlb canable bullpen arm. Plus need a good starter no LF, DH need a Catcher capable of at least 90 games behind the plate. All that added this offseason and they still might miss playoffs in 25

Asked by MLB Network’s Jon Morosi if the Jays had any hope of finishing anywhere but last in the AL East in 25, Atkins replied that it’d be “an easy no” Ahahahaha!

@twozero6ix
The rebuild should have happened at the trade deadline. They just don’t have the talent that can come up from the farm and enough payroll room to bring in who they need.

Awful, insufferable fan base too. Montreal Expos fans had way more class. Would love to see the Blue Jays relocate to a deserving city in the US

Perhaps the club should be moved to Montreal or Vancouver, and be kept in Canada.
Or is the Canada thing what’s really bothering you?

Vlad will join Soto in Queens.
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
We don’t even know if Steinbrenner is willing to pay for Soto
If they do sign Soto I think the Yankees will get stingy on future spending until Giancarlo’s and Lemahieus contracts are gone
Rsox
He said “Queens” referring to Cohen and the Mets.
Unless the Yankees backload a deal for Soto I’m not sure they can keep him with those other bloated contracts. Yankees ’25 payroll already projects at $244 million, though non-tendering some guys will bring that down a little
StudWinfield
Yankees don’t need to backload any contract. It doesn’t change the AAV at all. The question is whether or not Hal wants to kick the CBT reset can down the road or not. Having prime Soto/Judge for the next few years might push him the that direction.
I don’t think Hal is much different from LAD, SDP or PHI ownership, if he sees a chance to be WS competitive for a few years he’ll eat the CBT.

Makes sense. Guy was terrible in 2024 and they aren’t going to sell low right now. But regardless, that core in Toronto will be gone soon, either in trades or FA. It was a nice idea to bring all the sons of former stars but that isn’t how you win championships.
Let’s hope they’re smart and start trading some of their core this year to start the rebuild back to being competitive again.

@PoisonedPens
The Canadian dollar tax?
PoisonedPens
@NoSaint All MLB salaries are paid in American dollars. All revenue generated by the Blue Jays organization (ticket sales, local broadcasting, etc.) is in Canadian dollars (short of the shared revenue generated by MLB)
At the current exchange rate of $0.72 US, a $45M salary to Soto, for example, would $62.360M Canadian. That’s a pretty significant amount every season out of the old operating budget.
Add to that the Jays would also probably have to come in at a higher number than any other bidder because the base Canadian income tax is higher. Also, any luxury tax assessed by MLB for exceeding payroll tiers would similarly be paid in US dollars back to MLB.
NoSaint
@PoisonedPens
Rogers communication Inc. deals in money market accounts in the US. Paying players in USD is not a problem.
Players not residing in Canada earning money in Canada do not have to pay taxes in Canada especially if the create a corporation in a more tax friendly environment (Texas, Nevada, Florida, etc.). I do it when I work in the States. The US company pays my Canadian corporation and I pay taxes in Canada.
PoisonedPens
@NoSaint
Of course I understand that part. All MLB players are paid in US dollars, same with NHL hockey and NBA basketball. And the team is of course making money in both Canadian and American dollars depending on where they are playing as revenues are split between home and visiting teams,
However the Blue Jays (as a subsidiary of Rogers) still sell their tickets in Canadian dollars and the bulk of the team’s revenue is generated in Canadian dollars, so $45M American for a salary would be over $62M Canadian as part of the actual team revenue and so on. That’s a lot of loonies!
Also the MLB luxury tax, should the Blue Jays exceed it by signing Soto, would be paid to MLB in American dollars. I was not indicating there was a formal “tax” but the cost of doing MLB business is 30% higher which would impact an enormous contract such as Soto’s..
SkenesandSlopes
The fanbase pay in Canadian currency.

Thats a HARD NO…He isn’t going to Toronto…..
jimmertee
A hard “no” from Atkins to possibily dealing Bo Bichette perfectly illustrates the leadership incompetence in the #BlueJays front office.
This team cannot possibly compete in the ALEast unless the BlueJays land 3 more quality starters and 3 more quality relievers and at least one more outfield power bat.
Too many holes to fill.
Atkins, Shapiro, Click, and LaCava all need to be removed from all baseball player and staffing decisions.
cooperhill
You should have learned a lesson, just because his dad was great, doesn’t mean the kid is, see Biggio !
Stealing Signs
He should have, problem is @jimmetee isn’t the brightest crayon in the box. He’s exactly the kind of guy that thinks trading a player at his lowest is a good idea & yet he has the audacity to criticize the front office for every move they make.
Samuel
jimmertee;
I realize this may sound a bit radical, but being as the Blue Jays have a farm system do they ever promote players from it and have them play a lot? Why are they forever taking on salaries in trade and signing free agents?
As for Bichette: Yes he’s a decent hitter for a SS. But SS is a defensive position, and he’s not terribly good at it. Why are 2 of every 3 Jays articles here about Bo Bichette? Are opposing teams going to offer the nails-on-chalkboard “haul” for him? He’s got one year at $17m – which to me is an overpay – before he becomes a FA.
From what I see the Jays would do well to cut the payroll some and have the roster get younger with players that have some upside potential.
I watched at least parts of 8-10 Jays games last year. Only because teams I follow were playing them. They don’t play with fire in their belly. Go through the motions. Don’t try to do anything particularly creative / smart. It’s fun to watch Vlad bat and Varsho get amazing jumps in CF and read the ball off the bat to take the routes to balls better than anyone except perhaps Cedric Mullins of the O’s. And I keep writing that Ernie Clement plays solid in the field, at bat, and running the bases. Short of that and some of the starting pitchers having a good game, they’re as pedestrian a team as there is in MLB.

About 80 to 90 games into the season his tune will change

I wish I had the same job protection as Atkins.
All he does is fail, and make the same mistakes. He was handed the most money ownership has ever spent, and a top 3 farm system.

Atkins replied that it’d be “an easy no”
===========================
The correct response should be “no one is safe”. Even on teams like NY, LA ,etc., you might not say it, but no one should be safe. On teams like the RS, it should be assumed that no one is safe.
On a team like TO, to say Bo is an easy no, is crazy.
Touch 'em all Joe
It’s a tough situation to navigate.
Bichette is entering his last season of team control.
He is coming off a nightmare of a season. Thus, his trade value has never been lower.
The Jays need to shed salary to get under the CBT threshold.
Bichette is set to have an AAV of $11.2 million (a lot for a player with -0.4 WAR in 2024).
Not to mention Vladdy is entering his final season of team control, which, will surely cost a lot to keep him around beyond 2025.
It’s a convoluted situation to say the least. Bo was so good from 2021-2023, and yet, here we are listening to the FO rationalize not trading him.
It’s hard to watch unfold. I’m just glad I’m not the one calling the shots.
So, how should the Jays handle this?
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
Their best option is to run it back one last time, and hope everyone is on their A-game. Add one big bat, one lesser but good bat, sign a cavalcade of relievers and a 3rd starter and they run it back. If 2025 fails they blow it up.
Touch 'em all Joe
Do you think they do this via trade or free agency? I have a hard time envisioning them making much noise in FA.
Dustyslambchops23
If 2025 fails what are they blowing up?
Who of value do they have to trade at that point? berrios and who? And you run the real risk of having to trade Vladdy or Bo to teams that may not have a positional need so won’t pay much.
What Jays should do is sign Vlad to that extension, trade Bo, Gausman, Bassitt, Romano anyone who has value for near ready prospects.
Then get ready for 2026. Some of your arms will be coming back, you should have some prospects ready to contribute.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
I forgot to mention they should extend Vlad either way. I think on paper they still have a decent floor of value, Atkins just needs to augment and make sure he hits on his additions. Might req overpaying for plus talent. Yeah you’re right, most of the contracts with any value now will be dusted by this time next year. But I still think they should be all in for 2025.
Dustyslambchops23
I really don’t see the core anymore and despite the high payroll in their competitive window, they have no depth in key areas. They don’t have enough money to spend to fix depth and their top end issue. They have too many holes to plug. Even if they get Soto, which they won’t, they won’t have any money left to do anything else and that won’t be enough to make them a contender
We saw that last year from the rotation and bullpen, they have nothing to call up. Going all in on 2025 when a Vlad injury or a Gausman injury would create another last place finish is tough. They just aren’t a well built team overall, everything would need to go right, and the last 2 years have shown that is not successful strategy.
I guess whatever they do it’s going to be a long road to rebuild.
KamKid
They don’t need to shed salary to get under the CBT. They might need to choose to limit the budget to not go over but they are estimated to be about $30m under right now. Not a lot you can do with $30m, but they can start above the threshold and move money at the deadline if they aren’t in it.
I don’t think they have a lot of choice in how they handle it. There’s nothing with enough trade value to really add a lot to the future. Maybe Vlad but even then it’s one year of control at around $30m. That’s probably worth less than what people want to believe.
I think what Ignorant SOB says is pretty much the obvious choice.
Any big choices really centre around Guerrero.

shapiro and useless atkins will screw this up Royally !!
No Confidence with the 2 Cleveland Clowns…!
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
Atkins did make one sound decision in his tenure, and that was choosing Gausman over Robbie Ray for the big contract. Atkins must have had inside information on Ray though, because it’s hard not to sign the guy who just gave you a Cy Young award winning season.
GarryHarris
Bo Bichette won’t be traded because no other front office will want give up so much and then risk a Bo Bichette offensive comeback. If he can’t comeback or has a partial comeback, his defense is still subpar…. But then again, there’s always the Jerry Dipoto factor.
Bart Harley Jarvis
“Toronto is set to give the bulk of playing time to Alejandro Kirk.”
I see what you did there, Anthony Franco.

The article is misleading. I watched the interview and Morosi stated that Bichette had a down year and asked what they would say if another club approached them about selling low. The GM, Atkins quickly said, “That would be an easy no.” IMO Atkins was implying they would not sell low on Bichette. NOT that they wouldn’t trade him.

I sure hope so !!
