The Dodgers announced the hiring of Chris Woodward as first base coach. He replaces Clayton McCullough, who departed to take the Marlins’ managerial job two weeks ago.
Woodward returns to Dave Roberts’ staff after two seasons in the L.A. player development department. The 48-year-old spent three seasons as Roberts’ third base coach, a position he held between 2016-18. Woodward earned a reputation as a top managerial candidate over that stretch. He landed that gig in Arlington over the 2018-19 offseason. He managed the Rangers for nearly four seasons. Texas compiled a 211-287 record over his tenure. The Rangers fired Woodward towards the end of the ’22 campaign. They hired Bruce Bochy the following offseason, which proved a precursor to their 2023 World Series run.
In a press release, GM Brandon Gomes announced that Woodward will serve as a baserunning and infield instructor. Third base coach Dino Ebel will be responsible for working with the outfielders. Woodward played parts of 12 seasons in the big leagues as a utility infielder.
See Chris run. Run, Chris, run!
Okay so why are you commanding Chris to run when Chris is going to be the coach commanding others to run? Chris’s running days are over. (Maybe you’re referring to Chris Taylor actually.)
A little too literal reading maybe.
I guess so. I don’t know how else to read it, because it sounds like he’s talking to a dog, as in “Sit, UBU, sit” or “See Spot run”. But why refer to Chris as a dog in this instance? I could surmise perhaps that the OP intended his reference to be obscure and thus only scrutable to himself. Whatever floats one’s boat I guess.
Maybe you misunderstood. It’s:
See Chris.
Run
Run, Chris?
Run!
That second paragraph reads like it came out of a children’s book. Not too awfully obscure, I hope.
I hope he gets another shot to manage someday. He didn’t have a chance in Texas with the rosters they were running out there.
Hands down the worst coach we’ve had since at least Johnny Oates. Soft, poor bullpen management, zero backbone on game day (probably all the time, but who knows who people are when cameras aren’t on).
This guy definitely punches out of his weight class trivia wise. He met a Canadian woman while a Blue Jay who he married and has three children with. He was in an episode of Degrassi in 2004!
He was a 54th round draft pick who made appearances in 12 different MLB seasons, playing every infield and outfield position.
He managed the Rangers for four seasons, without but only a .424 winning percentage, and now accepts the modest position of first base coach.
I think 1b coach is a position of few responsibilities. I would love to be a 1b coach, and travel around the nation (and Toronto!).
He has lived this charmed life yet he walks around with a perpetual grimace on his face and a noticeable chip on his shoulder. Some people diagnose this demeanor as a classic case of “Short Man Syndrome” which in some instances is incurable (which I hope is not the case with our little guy here.)
Welcome back Billy Bob Thortan. Great coach.
He was in over his head as a manager. He’s more suited for first base coach where he’ll have minimal impact on games.
He didn’t do a great job in Ranger land (he also had crappy rosters to lead so there’s that) but he is a nice fellow. Met him at fan fest and he was terrific…. along with Deshields and Gallo just terrific with the fans.
They run fast. They run slow. They run here. They run there. Go dogs go.
Why no 2nd and home plate coach?
So Woodward manages the Rangers for four years, albeit to a losing record. He is fired. The very next year the new manager wins the World Series. Did Bochy bring in 26 new players or did Woodward set the table for the Rangers first ever Championship?
Maybe Woodward coming back also has Seager wanting to reunite in LA? One can dream…
So if the Dodgers have someone named Forrest in the system, would he say Run Forrest Run!!
