The Angels added recently acquired infielder Scott Kingery to their 40-man roster. The Halos released left-hander Kenny Rosenberg in a corresponding move.
Los Angeles acquired Kingery from Philadelphia over the weekend. They would not have done so if they weren’t planning to add him to the roster, as the infielder would otherwise have reached minor league free agency today. The 30-year-old former top prospect has only appeared in one big league game since 2021. He’s coming off a decent showing with Philadelphia’s top affiliate in Lehigh Valley, hitting .268/.318/.488 with 25 homers and stolen bases apiece.
Rosenberg, a 29-year-old swingman, has pitched in 17 MLB contests across the last three years. He owns a 4.66 earned run average. The Cal State Northridge product had a decent year with Triple-A Salt Lake, working to a 4.21 ERA through 115 1/3 innings in the Pacific Coast League. He punched out 21.5% of opponents against a tidy 7.8% walk percentage.

Hmmm.
Psychguy
Shrewd move Perry.
longines64
Tell him you’re the 2nd baseman and then leave him alone.
Rexhudler86
@longines64. He most likely going to be utility the guy. Until “no English” rendon pulls a hamstring.
whosehighpitch
He will hit 300 no doubt. Those yonkos in Philly (Klentak and the baseball know it alls) screwed him up really
numberoneslayerfan
chief, hitting 300 home runs in a single season is a tall order
Troutahni
There will definitely be a team with a need for LHP Swingman/Mop-Up lefty who pitched well in the high altitude, big offense PCL. I would not be suprised if Rosenberg gets a 5th starters job in MLB next season. He provides length and an average Era. He doesn’t walk batters and is always in the strike zone, so he has a propensity to give up the long ball.
Rexhudler86
@troutahni I rather have them try to get fulmer back. Canning gone check. Rosenberg gone check. Daniel’s gone hopefully and same with saurez. They need to wait out the market and get a mid tier pitcher that ran out of landing spots.
solaris602
One game in the majors since 2021? I guess the hope here is a great baseball story where he says, “Everyone gave up on me….except the Angels.” Why not? LA has nothing to lose.
Rexhudler86
@solaris602 his contract prevented him from playing. Now that’s not a problem. Not saying he’s going to be great, but he could be adequate utility guy with no risk.

What a great career opportunity from the baseball gods. A really weak free agent 3B market and the worst 3B incumbent on any team in years. Might indeed only be a utility player but opportunity could knock.
Rexhudler86
@al conin. Rengifo is probably the 3rd baseman when Rendon gets a ingrown hang nail. With moore getting the call up for 2nd base. Kingery is either the bench guy or the minor league callup depending if they sign someone else. They definitely should get another infielder, reliever, and wait out the market for a starter. After that just find lottery tickets on minor league deals
bravesfan
24 mil to be terrible. Guy is living the dream.
Rexhudler86
@bravesfan. He’s making vet minimum now. So it’s really not a big deal pun intended. His deal is a bargain compared to Rendon’s 36 million 40 game contract.
brocnessmonster
In 2024?
Rexhudler86
@brocness he was declined his option. Resign with the Phillies and is making 800k. Angels got him for cash considerations, could be international money.

What Scott Kingery did this year, was very impressive. Yes, he’s made a lot of money. But he could have given up, he never did. He was a leader and well-loved teammate and definitely could have contributed as a UTL infielder at the MLB level. Solid move by the Angels. Won’t move mountains but I believe he projects to be a solid bench piece in the majors still.
