Angels general manager Perry Minasian held an end-of-season press conference this week, with details provided by Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register and Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com. Though the club is wrapping up another disappointing season, Minasian expressed confidence in what he believes to be a budding core and indicated the entire coaching staff will be returning next year.
The Halos finished 2024 with a record of 63-99. Despite plenty of challenging seasons in the club’s history, that was actually their worst performance ever by a notable margin. Prior to this year, the club’s worst record was a mark of 65-95 in 1980. This year’s struggles continued a dreary run for the club, as they haven’t made the postseason since 2014, the longest active drought in the league.
“As far as the season goes, very frustrating from a small-picture standpoint,” Minasian said. “Big picture, there are a lot of things to be excited about. I believe this is the type of year that we’ll look back at a year from now, two years from now, and say that was huge.” Per Bollinger, Minasian highlighted that the Diamondbacks only won 52 games in 2021 but were in the World Series two years later, while the Royals only had 56 wins in 2023 but are in the postseason this year.
Whether the Angels can mount a similar climb into contention remains to be seen. Minasian seems to be encouraged by the development of young players such as shortstop Zach Neto, catcher Logan O’Hoppe and first baseman Nolan Schanuel, as well as pitchers José Soriano, Jack Kochanowicz and Ben Joyce.
Those players all showed encouraging signs this year, to varying degrees. Neto hit 23 home runs and stole 30 bases. His defensive metrics were mixed, as he had 11 Defensive Runs Saved but -5 Outs Above Average, but he was still graded by FanGraphs as being worth 3.5 wins above replacement on the year. O’Hoppe provided offense around league average, with a 101 wRC+ on the year, though catchers are usually about 10 to 12% below par. His work behind the plate was also considered to be solid, leading to a 2.1 fWAR tally. Schanuel’s contributions were more modest. He drew walks at a strong 11.2% clip but only hit 13 homers and also had mixed reviews for his glovework, leading to 0.7 fWAR on the year.
On the pitching side of things, Kochanowicz made 11 starts with a 3.99 earned run average. His 9.4% strikeout rate was well below average but he limited walks to a tiny rate of 3.8% and forced opponents to put 57% of balls in play on the ground. Soriano tossed 113 innings, which was an achievement in and of itself after he missed so much time due to injuries. But the results were also good, as he had a 3.42 ERA, 20.7% strikeout rate, 9.6% walk rate and 59.7% ground ball rate. Ben Joyce used his triple-digit velocity to throw 34 2/3 innings with a 2.08 ERA, 23.2% strikeout rate, 9.9% walk rate and 58.9% ground ball rate.
In addition to their solid results, those players are all cheap and controllable. None of those six have reached three years of service time, meaning none of them are guaranteed to qualify for arbitration this winter. Soriano could perhaps qualify as a Super Two player, depending on where the cutoff will be. He is going into the winter at two years and 121 days, which is close to where the line has been in previous offseasons. Regardless of which side of the border Soriano is on, each of these players can be affordably controlled through at least 2028.
But even with contributions from those six, the club was still a disappointment in 2024, so improvements will be needed elsewhere. Perhaps that will come from other young players like Caden Dana, Sam Aldegheri, Niko Kavadas, Christian Moore, Nelson Rada and others, but the club will also need to make some external additions, something that Minasian is aware of. “We definitely need more players,” he said. “There’s no secret there.”
It’s unclear at this point what kind of resources Minasian will have at his disposal for the winter, as he said he hasn’t yet discussed the 2025 payroll with owner Arte Moreno. The club did cut back on spending in 2024, winding up in the range of $176MM per the calculations of RosterResource. That was close to $40MM below the roughly $215MM they spent in 2023.
RR currently pegs the club at $109MM for 2025 but that’s not a complete picture of their situation. The club has 12 arbitration-eligible players, with MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz projecting that group for a total of $37.6MM. Not every player in that group will be tendered a contract, but the Angels could be internally committed to the $140MM range already.
That would leave them some wiggle room if they were willing to carry forward a similar payroll to 2024, but it remains to be seen as to whether that will be the case after a 99-loss season. The club presumably took some revenue hits in terms of ticket sales, TV ratings and advertising in their first season of the post-Shohei Ohtani era.
Regardless of how the club handles its offseason, Minasian did reveal a bit about how he’s thinking about the club going forward. Notably, he wouldn’t commit to Anthony Rendon being the club’s starting third baseman nor even being on the roster.
“When Anthony has played, he hasn’t been productive,” Minasian said. “So he’s gonna have to come in and earn it. There’s no handouts. We’re starting to create some depth, where we have some versatile players that can do some different things, so the best players are gonna play, no doubt about it.” When asked if Rendon would continue to have a roster spot if things don’t turn around, he responded with: “That’s a great question. We’re going to look at everything. We’re going to look at what makes the best sense for this organization.”
Rendon’s struggles with the Angels are well documented at this point. He signed a seven-year, $245MM deal with the club going into 2020 but they haven’t seen much return on that investment. He was good in the first year of the deal, though that was the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign. Over the four seasons since then, he has frequently missed time due to injury and only played 205 games. As Minasian said, he hasn’t done well even when on the field, having hit .231/.329/.336 for a wRC+ of 89 over those four campaigns. That includes a dismal line of .218/.307/.267 in 2024, when he only got into 57 contests.
Rendon is now 34 years old, turning 35 next June, and has two years left on his deal. He’ll make $38MM in each of those two years, leaving $76MM to be paid out. It’s not uncommon for a club to give up on a player with an underwater contract. The Angels themselves did it not too long ago by releasing Albert Pujols. However, while some fans may yearn for the same to happen with Rendon soon, it would be unprecedented for a club to eat this much money.
The largest guarantee still owed to a player at the time of his release was when the Red Sox cut Pablo Sandoval loose in July of 2017. At that point, he was still owed $18MM in each of the next two years, plus a $5MM buyout on his 2020 option. He was also still owed a little more than a third of his 2017 salary of $17MM. Matt Gelb of The Athletic recently pegged the total at $48.3MM of what Sandoval was still owed when he was released, which is barely half of what Rendon is still owed.
Whether the Angels want to break that record remains to be seen. They could perhaps have Luis Rengifo take over at third base, though he’s also an option to be the regular at second base or perhaps serve in a utility role. Moore is a second baseman has already reached Double-A and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the club quickly promote him, since they did the same with guys like Neto, Schanuel and Dana. Matthew Lugo, acquired in the Luis García trade, had a strong year in the minors. He has reached Triple-A and can play all over the infield, though he has some time in the outfield as well.
Perhaps there will come a time when the club decides it would rather dedicate playing time to those guys rather than continuing to run Rendon out onto the field. The designated hitter spot might be used by Mike Trout with some regularity as the club tries to stave off his own injury troubles. Offseason acquisitions could further crowd the roster. Rendon could put together a nice stretch of health and flip the narrative but it seems his contract is going to guarantee him any opportunities.

As long as Arte owns them they don’t have one…

We can only hope the fools who persist in their folly will become wise (as a great poet once said). I’m not betting on it.

The fan base has given up on Artes ownership. The media has done the same. The saddest part is that Arte himself has given up on this team after the Anaheim City debacle.

I grew up in Anaheim just a few miles from the big A, now living in the SF Bay Area for 28 years . With Artie as owner I see similarities ( other than payroll) to Oakland’s ownership. He will run the team, stadium, and fans into the ground.
Attendance will drop as will payroll.

That Anthony Rendon contract is hilarious

Walked in to play Boras plaything in the Cole negotiations, walked out with Anthony Rendon.
Arte both got the Yanks to offer record money and picked up Boras worst deal in years at the same time.

The real winner that offseason was Scott Boras. Arte got talked into the Rendon contract and the Yankees outbid for Cole. Arte got played, at least the Yankees have gotten very good results from Cole.

I can save you some time if you haven’t read the article. In a word, the Angels future is bleak. Ahahaha!

A different tune than most off-seasons under Arte, but we’ll see if positive actions follow. They’re in desperate need for front-end SP. Maybe add 1 more bat. Curious if how much they put behind improving from horrendous season
YankeesBleacherCreature
They were fourth in most allowed runs in MLB and an ace is what they need.

Naw, they need to invest in an ACTUAL development system or trade for good prospects. They aint close enough to spend on a big ticket unless its rehabbing someone.
HalosHeavenJJ
Bingo. Like building an offensive line before getting the QB.
I would totally be in for signing Beiber, though, and taking that risk. We’ll suck this year and he can rehab.

Apparently Omarj muted me so I’ll reply to him through you Creature.
Omarj – “They’re in desperate need for front-end SP. Maybe add 1 more bat.”
The Angels just finished with their worst record in the club’s history. They need so much more than a pitcher and a bat to move the needle. For example, if they plan to rely on Canning, Sandoval, Anderson and Detmers in the rotation next year, they will have another losing season. And starting pitching is just the start of what they need in order to make a difference.
GoogleMe
You do not need a ton of great players to be a good team. You just need a few difference makers and average supporting cast. If you look at the Royals they have Bobby Witt as a difference maker and a average cast. They have a good rotation due in large part that they picked up Seth Lugo and Wacha, who were available to anyone to pick up including the Angels.
The Angels have had difference makers, but the supporting cast was below average. Below average is an every day starter that is below 2.0 WAR. The mix of great players mixed with a bunch of bad players have kept the Angels from drafting in the top 3 to 5,. This year they are bad enough and will probably end up with a top tier talent. They may even hit the ?jackpot and get a player like Ethan Holiday.
I agree with you the rotation is still a major concern. Anderson was stumbling to the finish line. Detmers was still bad upon his return from SLC. The young guys, Dana, Kochanowcz, Aldegheri, have yet to prove anything at the major league level. Kochanowicz was decent if you take away his first couple starts, but his minor league numbers do not suggest he is destined for greatness.
mlb fan
“How much they put behind”…Hopefully not much since the Angels are nowhere near contention. Adding big ticket items now would be a DISASTER(locking them into their present course for years), much like the Anthony Rendon contract has been.
What the Angels need right now, is a strong focus on drafting, international signings and development while they await the expiration of the Trout/Rendon deals. When they’re much closer to contention, then they can focus on adding more pitching or talent in free agency.
angelsbroncosfan
Yes the Angels need pitching. That goes without saying. But no one brings up the fact, they were 27th in runs scored this season. The Angels don’t have the luxury, to go full rebuild. Not when the team from Brooklyn, that is less than 30 miles from them, spends the way they can. Now with no tv revenue next season, that could actually use that as an excuse to some what do a half rebuild.
aragon
Rebuild? with what? They have hardly any tradable players. Besides, the team’s scouting and development along with minor league coaching is beyond terrible. Major league pitching and hitting coaches needed to be replaced. Upcoming draft should be a game changer for the club but we all know Minasian will do his thing and draft a 3B worth 15-20th pick.
Skagg’s wrongful death trial will begin May, 2025 if there is no further delay. If it ends in the year Arte will likely sell the team the following offseason. Until then there is no hope of getting better. I suspect it might get worse.

–Minasian seems to be encouraged by the development of young players such as shortstop Zach Neto, catcher Logan O’Hoppe and first baseman Nolan Schanuel, as well as pitchers José Soriano, Jack Kochanowicz and Ben Joyce.”–
–
Keep in mind the following:
1. Perry came from the Braves. They build through the draft.
2. Winning teams are built up the middle – starting with the C and SS that support the pitching. Angels have O’Hoppe and Neto there.
3. Ron Washington is the manager. Perry knew him when they were with the Braves. He’s been the best instructor of how to play infield positions for over 30 years in MLB. He’s working with Neto. Former ML catcher Jerry Narron is the catching coach and has been working with O’Hoppe — considered one of the best young catchers in MLB.
4. A few years ago Perry drafted nothing but pitchers. Those that have survived are now in the high minors.
None of this is covered here.
I’ve liked Perry for years. He’s been criticized by posters here as most posters think coaches and fundamental play are silly incidentals. Most of them have rotisserie league teams that don’t need to consider that stuff. And of course they expect instant results as their teams draft anew each offseason.
If the Angels keep doing the right things, they’re in line to be ‘The Braves – West’.

Sell the team back to Disney
angelsbroncosfan
7 years of Disney owning the team, 6 of them, the Angels had a losing record. The Angels didn’t win it in 02, because they were owned by Disney. They won despite of Disney. Gene Autry had more to do with the 02 roster than Disney did.
HalosHeavenJJ
Disney left Arte with a World Series winner, stacked farm system, and the scouts and front office that built it.
Arte will leave the next guy with a last place team, horrible farm system, and the front office that built both.
angelsbroncosfan
Disney walked into a team with a deep Farm System. Good scouts, patient player development. Most of them were still with the team when Arte bought the team. Most of those scouts, are in their 70’s and 80’s now. People act like Arte was supposed to keep them from retiring or moving into front office jobs.
HalosHeavenJJ
No, but he should have been able to hire competent baseball people capable of identifying and hiring competent replacements.
Instead he hired his friends, Tony Reagins, and cut the scouting and development budgets to the bone.
angelsbroncosfan
Tony Reagins, was the head of the scouting department, when Arte bought the team. As far as the scouting department, it has vastly improved under Perry. The GM is the one who decides who to hire, when it comes to the scouting department. I do agree Halos, that player development is key, to how quickly the Angels become good again
TurksTeeth
Donny Rowland was scouting director when Moreno bought the team. Reagins was a marketing intern who was eventually elevated to player development head, handling the business side of the farm franchises, not driving scouting decisions (he had little background for that).
Stoneman, Rowland, and key scouts like Eddie Bane oversaw the golden years of the Angels farm, and they benefitted handily from a long run of bad teams and subsequent good draft position.
HalosHeavenJJ
Ed Bane was the scouting director and Reagins fired him “because I don’t like your last couple of drafts.”
From the 2011 draft until Perry got here the Angels drafts produced Taylor Ward and that’s about it.
Meanwhile Arte hired multiple GMs with no previous experience and ran the only decent one out of town.
angelsbroncosfan
Halos, please don’t tell me you are talking about trader Jerry? He hired scouts, that absolutely knew nothing about baseball. Then Eppler went and hired nothing but scouts, that were fired by every other team. I stand corrected on Reagins.

What a moron. So now an entire season is considered “small picture”? It’s always a “small sample size” or “small picture” when him or his players stink. When they do good for 2 weeks they congratulate themselves and declare the player a future all star to build around.the “young core” he’s declared “talented” is simply not as good as Minasian and the announcers want you to believe.

DGHalos714
As a Halos fan I will be honest…the fact that we will still have the same owner, GM and coaches next year I am not confident that next year will be any better. It will get worse before it gets better. It starts with our minor league teams and this upcoming draft. Because everyone knows that no good free agents will want to play for us. Unless we pay more than anyone else (which we tend to do). Sad to say but if I was Trout or any other super star player I would try to get out and avoid playing for my Halos.
kellin
By all indications, Trout has no desire to leave. At least him talking openly about moving to a corner outfield spot and DHing more often is a good sign.. although from what I’ve heard his DH stats are awful. I’ve also heard he needs to reduce some muscle bulk, which might reduce the injuries.
HalosHeavenJJ
If Trout wants to leave he needs to get on the field and perform. As of now, nobody wants an expensive broken down guy.
Not that Trout said he wants out.
kellin
The young core of this team is good, and we’ll see how their development continues next season. Soriano and Kochanowicz are the only two good starters the team currently has. Dana is still young, so we’ll see what happens next season. Canning needs to go. The team can keep Anderson for one more season if they pick up two good pitchers. I don’t have much faith in Silseth, or any of the other starters, for that matter. Maybe Sandoval can come back and be a decent 4/5, I dunno.
Need to figure something out with 2nd base. Is Christian Moore ready for 2025? Lets get someone there in the meantime, or as suggested put Rengifo at 2nd, cut Rendon and find someone to replace him. I dont think Kavadas, Wagaman or Rada are really going to do anything.
I think the outfield may actually be ok. It feels like Adell finally figured out his swing, and his defense has been strong, so keep him there along with Ward, and Moniak as a backup when Trout goes down once again.
Rexhudler86
@kellin I know canning had a option, not sure if it goes away since he’s going to arb 3. Just wished they traded Anderson for norby. That would’ve solved 2nd base, and would’ve given them the chance to trade ward since moore can play corner outfield. Lorenzen could’ve been a Anderson replacement.
kellin
I’m still annoyed the Angels didn’t keep Lorenzen when they had the chance. I wanted him to stay.
Norby would have definitely been a cheap upgrade for 2nd base, in exchange for Anderson..
Rexhudler86
@kellin my guess the problem was the money when it came to Anderson. But if they sent 7 million and got a decent prospect. I say bite the bullet, and sign lorenzen or clevinger For 7/1. it’s the same thing while getting younger
rennick
Per the article, Minasian”indicated that the entire coaching staff will be returning next year.”
Yes, but what about the club house attendants?
Just a little playful fun at the news about the Marlins. In all seriousness, I don’t really follow the Angels but I assume it’s nice to know that this piece of business is done and that the front office can focus their attention on FA players and on development programs. There’s something to be said about checking things off the list early.
kellin
Most of the coaching staff is new as of 2024. New manager, new pitching coach.. they supposedly have a plan in place. Its difficult to implement it when the owner won’t spend money, but the first thing that needs to be done is develop some kind of culture. I think between Washington, Enright and Minassian, that has finally started this year, and the team needed to hit rock bottom to maybe get Arte to take notice. As an Angels fan, like most, we all know the problem with this team starts at the top.
rennick
I’d love to see the Angels have a strong year. You fans definitely deserve it.

“When the owner won’t spend money”….It’s not nearly as simple as what you imply. And as far as “spending money”, what do you call giving Rendon, Trout, Puhjols and J. Hamilton close to a BILLION dollars?..
Arte Moreno’s problem is clearly not withholding resources from the team, but in spreading it around and “spending wisely”. No one who’s been truly watching thinks Arte’s problem is in “not spending”.

AngelsMinion
Hey Samuel! I see what you are saying – teams can’t just spend to win. They need to scout well and develop those players; but, if the team refuses to invest in the infrastructure to do so, that point is a bit spurious. The only other option is to buy what isn’t being developed internally, maybe hit on a few picks, and hope for the best.
This is where the Halos are right now. They simply have not invested in the foundations to build on top. Their choices are to either supplement with some free agents, to shore a fractured roster, and cross their fingers, OR, rededicate their efforts to manufacturing a strong base via scouting and minor league enhancements. They have proven too frugal for the former in the best of times (and now with the TV deal and fan mutiny, Moreno will surely balk further) and have seen a couple of decades of progress in maturing minor league systems around them, simply pass them by so much, they will never catch-up.
This is the frustration the fans are feeling. The owner is cheap, but in the most foolish ways. Instead of a big name on a marquee, he should focus on investing in more talent, and spreading risk. He won’t do that, though, as he honestly feels that the Rendones and Hamiltons bring the fans in. He’s wrong. It’s about his spending direction that makes him cheap. He wants it all now, and thinks quick spending, not smart spending, will increase fan spending. When he buys a free agent, he’s not looking to win anywhere other than the turnstile, and we are all sick of it. It’s cheap, get rich – or win quick – thinking. It’s dumb. It’s simplistic. It’s a billionaires checkbook with a grifter’s mindset.
He only cares about the appearance of trying to win, not actually doing it. If he wants to prove fans wrong, he has billions to make his point, and an upcoming free agent class willing to sign for the right portion of that. Otherwise, tear it down, and show the fanbase that a rebuild is on the horizon.
I have zero optimism for either, and the balance of the fanbase is there as well. Arte knows this, and it almost seems, when holding Ohtani (beyond the greed), not exploiting the last few FA classes, and the recent spate of underslot high end picks (one we couldn’t even convince to sign), he is being punitive for our lack of enthusiasm. He needs to sell. He’s just not that into it, us, or the game. And likewise, we’re just not into him.
Samuel
AngelsMinion;
I agree with you.
But you’re the first poster (or MLBTR writer) I can think of that has brought up spending money on scouting and development infrastructure – with the exception of an article the past week or so in which a writer in The Athletic pointed out that the Cardinals cut their development people while spending for FA’s. MLBTR summarized the article, and posters got indignant as expected.
MLBTR’s entire thing is to discuss how much money each MLB team has to use for payroll each year (I don’t know how they get that information, franchises don’t make their budgets public), and then do what I don’t quite understand with it. Like the 3 blind mice posters here go along with this “analysis” not questioning what’s written. Doing what I wrote: Blaming (cheap) owners for not spending more to bring in players when they don’t make the WS (although free spenders such as the Yankees and Dodgers get a pass there).
–
There is no breakdown here of team spending for scouts, developers, etc. Probably because that information is not made public.
–
When Arte first took over the Angels (that had won a WS) he spent lavishly on name players in FA to keep the team going. He was beloved. In fact, for years one of the baseball writers at the LA Times was praising his approach while condemning the Dodges “Parking Lot Attendant” owner (at that time) for being so cheap. And the public went along with that
–
Keep in mind as well that spending on personnel for scouting and development means nothing if the organization doesn’t have a clear philosophy and business plan as to the sort of players they’re looking for and how they want them developed. Experienced/ high quality scouts and development people want to be listened to and produce. They’re not just in it for the money. This entire concept that throwing money at something in MLB produces top-tier results never works for long. As small market franchises such as the Rays, Brewers, Guardians, DBacks and others that compete for years at a time show – it’s not the money they spend, it’s how they spend it.
–
I have faith in Perry. He’s a solid baseball person. In time that will show.

With no TV revenue as of right now for the 2025 season and beyond. It’s going to be interesting to see what transpires and filling up those holes. My biggest concern, is Arte decides to sign Soto to a 12 year 600 million dollar contract. The Angels need hitting just as badly as they need pitching. Look at the numbers if you don’t believe that. I will be glued to this app and MLB Network to see what happens

“Angels needs for 2025….”
angelsbroncosfan;
Who cares?
This is like talking about the Orioles rebuild in their 2nd or 3rd year.

I’ve treated this season as 162 games of Spring Training all year. That was the only way to view it if you were honest.
Studs: Neto, O’Hoppe, Soriano and Joyce if they hold up.
Schanuel looks like Casey Kotchman 2.0. So OK to have on an MLB roster but won’t move the needle.
Jury is still out on Adell. Massive defensive improvement, solid second half with the bat, but bad overall numbers.
The thing is there’s no depth behind any of them. And that’s the Angels problem under Arte.

Arte just needs to let Perry cook and stay out of the kitchen until it’s time to actually sign a big free agent.
HalosHeavenJJ
Agreed.
He also needs to find a TV deal now.
Acoss1331
That’s what Arte should do while Perry handles the team, get a TV deal, marketing the team. Arte comes from a marketing background, this should be his lane.

Adell is a bust. No instincts. Terrible defensively. Neto has instincts and a good hitter but he’s too small for SS. They should move him to 2nd. O Hoppe the jury is still out. Joyce has an injury history. Jordan Adams has such a weak arm for Center. Well they all do. But he couldn’t even through at that White Sock w a direct running head start on a shallow fly.

O Hoppe his defense is so so. He doesn’t pounce on short grounders in front of the plate. Not a great arm. And he doesn’t call games like experienced catchers

One last thing:
Cole Fontenelle is an interesting name to watch in the Arizona Fall League. Third baseman who had a good career at TCU and was hurt in AA this season.
If he can show promise to replace Rendon, that would be huge. Otherwise cutting Rendon will just lead to another cycle of waiver claims playing third base.

Good point. Anyone playing third is an improvement, even you and me. Too bad the FA 3B market is so light this year.
HalosHeavenJJ
I’ll keep typing because why not?
Angels Farm teams:
AAA Salt Lake City: 67-82 last in their division
AA Rocket City: 61-75 second worst record in the entire Southern League
High A Tri Cities: 53-78 last in the league
A Inland Empire: 58-72 last in their division second worst in the Cal League
This is organizational failure of epic proportions.

If it makes you feel better, the Mariners got all their minor league teams into the playoffs once
User 2976510776
It’s funny how the term “journeyman player” has disappeared from sports media
They’re now referred to as “depth”. The Angels got a lot of depth.
And not too many ex Angels in the playoffs this year.
User 2976510776
If the Angels added depth the last few years, then why do they think adding depth next year will change things.

Minasian: “As far as the season goes, very frustrating from a small-picture standpoint. Big picture, there are a lot of things to be excited about”
Me: “Big picture? Ok. Just finished worst season in club history. A big market team with no playoff game win since 2009. One of the worst rated farms in the majors. Sub-standard organization in all facets from scouting to player development. I guess I’m not real excited about the big picture.”
I don’t even blame Minasian. The constant in all of this (including highest GM turnover in the MLB) is Moreno. Minasian is just doing his job and and spinning things as best he can. Meanwhile, the long term dumpster fire will just keep burning as long as Moreno is the team owner.

At least Jesse James used a gun. Rendon is just walking up to the teller and demanding his money. Hell, I bet he has someone do it for him.
