Padres Plan To Discuss Extension With Mike Shildt

By Steve Adams | October 21, 2024 at 1:53pm CDT

Padres skipper Mike Shildt originally signed a two-year contract when hired to manage the club last offseason, but the club already has interest in keeping him around for a longer period. President of baseball operations A.J. Preller tells the Padres beat that the front office will sit down with Shildt and several members of the coaching staff to see if they can “line up” on a deal to keep them around on longer-term deals (X link via Annie Heilbrunn).

Under the 56-year-old Shildt, the Padres played at a 93-69 pace, good for second in the National League West and a Wild Card berth in the postseason. Shildt’s Padres topped the Braves 2-0 in the first round of postseason play before taking the archrival Dodgers to their limit in a thrilling, back-and-forth five-game National League Division Series. Ultimately, a Friars club that scored 21 runs over the first three games of the series was held scoreless in Games 4 and 5 alike.

Despite that disheartening finish to the season, Shildt’s first year in San Diego has to be considered a success. The Padres’ record improved by 11 games, and San Diego returned to postseason play after missing out on the heels of an 82-80 showing a year prior. As importantly, Shildt quickly won the clubhouse over. Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune spoke to several Padres veterans late in the season — many of whom have been with the team for multiple prior managers — and each took the opportunity to heap praise onto the environment and culture that Shildt had brought to the clubhouse. Joe Musgrove, Jake Cronenworth and Manny Machado have all played under three different managers in San Diego (four, in Machado’s case), and all effused praise for the job Shildt has done in his first season at the helm.

Of course, while Shildt was new to the Padres organization this season, this certainly wasn’t his first experience managing. He spent three and a half seasons leading the Cardinals’ dugout, and his dismissal in St. Louis registered as a legitimate shock following the 2021 season. Shildt had originally joined the Cardinals as a scout in 2003 before getting into minor league coaching and managing. In 2017, he was added to the big league staff as a quality control coach. He eventually became the team’s third base coach, then bench coach, and then interim manager following Mike Matheny’s firing. He soon shed the “interim” label and was extended on a three-year deal. He was named National League Manager of the Year in 2019.

In the weeks prior to Shildt’s own firing in St. Louis, the Cardinals had gone on an astonishing 17-game September winning streak to come roaring back into postseason contention. They lost a then one-game Wild Card date with the Dodgers, but Shildt was generally seen as an extension candidate following that 2021 campaign. Instead, president of baseball operations John Mozeliak cited “philosophical differences” in cutting ties with Shildt and promoting current skipper Oli Marmol to the post.

Shildt landed on his feet quickly. He took a job in the Commissioner’s Office, working in on-field operations alongside former Marlins general manager Michael Hill. Just six weeks later, he was hired as a player development consultant for the Padres and allowed to work in both roles simultaneously. San Diego had previously interviewed him for their managerial vacancy which wound up going to Bob Melvin, but Shildt received another interview two years later and this time landed the job on his current two-year contract.

Barring an extension, Shildt would head into next year as the proverbial and dreaded “lame duck” manager on an expiring contract, so it’s sensible enough that the Padres — who’ve now employed Shildt in some capacity for three years — are hopeful of solidifying his standing within the organization.

Have you ever heard his post-game interviews? The guy lives and breathes baseball and obviously he grew up around it and knows how baseball is supposed to be played. (Not Padres fan btw) (PS do we have to put disclaimers like this after every nice thing we say about a player or team that doesn’t happen to be our own? Good, I hope not.)

He was completely out managed by Roberts and it wound up costing them the series. That dude will never get them anywhere. Mistake to extend. They should start looking for someone who the players respect.

I hope you do realize not everything is the manager’s fault. Padres hitters failed to preform at all in games 5 and 6. He can’t press a button and magically have someone hit a homer, can he?

A real manager would have made lineup adjustments and moved the batting order around a bit. It’s what historical good leaders do. He also could have taken them aside and asked if they needed help. He managed that series scared and doesn’t belong in a contending teams dugout. They need to reach out to Buck or try and pry Boone out of NY if they ever want to beat LA

“Completely outmanaged by Roberts”..Good leaders are not always top level strategists. Some excellent leaders got where they are by being good motivators and inspiring field generals that push their charges to greater outcomes.

All that being said, I didn’t see Shildt get “out managed”, I saw the Dodgers pitchers shut down San Diego’s hitters for about 2 games straight. What manager wins when his hitters don’t hit for 18+ innings?

This is a top ten dumb post. Robert’s managed his bullpen perfectly only because his bullpen performed. He would have been a horses butt again if they had failed. The Padres bats went silent. That happens in baseball. Schildt did his job. The Padres won 93 games. Went to the playoffs and it took the Dodgers 5 games to eliminate them. Extending Schildt is the obvious thing to do. Dumb post.

Good for Mike Shildt. Unlike when he was manager in St.Louis, he now works for an organization, who’s owner or owners, put fans and winning before profits, unlike the greedy billionaire, Dewallet family in St.Louis, who puts profits before fans.

Padres have a history of adjusting prices based on production

        They’re good prices go up

        They’re bad prices go down

Some teams opt to keep prices the same after going from winning to losing.

But this is baseball, and oddly enough stupid comments are expected and I actually come here sometimes just to make a few! Nice diversion from academia, though stupid comments are common in that realm too….

I have thought since the day it happened that the “philosophical differences” were that Shildt was working to establish a culture of accountability throughout the organization and a focus on winning and Mozeliak was not at all interested in either of those things.

Schildt is a great old fashion coach. He doesn’t just look at a computer and produce a lineup. He goes by his feel for the game. Cardinals were fools to fire him for that 35 year old puppet. Mozeliak fired Schildt because he wanted full control of the decision making. Let the manager manage. Its funny how Marmol is one of the worst coaches in the league and got an extension but a proven success like Schildt has to claw his way to one. Ridiculous

I have been a Cardinals fan since Stan Musial
(Stan the Man #6) and I still think they have the best home uniforms in MLB…just so clean
but I never understood why the Cardinals fired Mike Shildt…he was the epitome of the Cardinals way…solid fundamentals at the plate, in the field and on the base paths. San Diego definitely benefited from the Cardinals mistake and I think that AJ will get something worked out with not only Shildt but also Ruben Niebla who in my opinion is one of the if not the best pitching coach in all of baseball.
Mike Shildt and Ruben Niebla really got the whole team together and the position players and pitchers all rave about the mentality that Shildt and Niebla have brought to the dugout…I for one hope they are around for a long time and I’ve been a Padres fan since they played at Westgate Park in the PCL…Pacific Coast League and saw the very first game they played at San Diego Stadium that became Jack Murphy Stadium and then Qualcomm before they got Petco built

Schildt did an even BETTER job than most give him credit for. Not only did the team improve markedly from 2023, they did so after losing one of the best hitters in baseball (Soto), one of the best closers in baseball (Hader), a finalist for this year’s AL Cy Young (Lugo) as well as Michael Wacha and Nick Martinez. Sure, they got some talent in return but that’s an enormous loss from one season to another, and Schildt got a team that had previously underperformed to the postseason.
