Infielder Eddy Alvarez went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment by the Mets earlier this week, per the league transaction log at MLB.com. He’s been assigned outright to Triple-A Syracuse but can reject that assignment to become a free agent — a path he’ll all but certainly take.
The Mets acquired Alvarez from the Red Sox in exchange for cash — a rare September swap that was allowed because Alvarez had been on a minor league contract at the time of the deal. New York selected him to the big league roster to help patch over its infield depth while dealing with multiple injuries. He went hitless in 11 trips to the plate and also pitched a scoreless inning of mop-up relief in a blowout loss. Alvarez was ineligible for the Mets’ postseason roster because he joined the organization after Aug. 31.
In parts of four big league campaigns, Alvarez is a .170/.257/.244 hitter in 154 plate appearances. He’s a career .277/.381/.467 hitter in eight Triple-A campaigns, however. He’s played primarily shortstop in his pro career but also has nearly 2000 innings at second base, more than 700 innings at third base, more than 300 innings in both outfield corners and 106 innings in center field over the course of 11 professional seasons.

Jose Quintana is one thing that the Mets got very right. This guy has very quietly put together one heckuva career, and has produced everywhere he has landed. White Sox among the best in baseball at developing pitching talent. That’s right. Another one of our boys. Milwaukee will have their hands full for the first 5 or 6 innings having to deal with this guy tonight!

@Very Barry Quitana has been awful for the team. Despite what his stats show, hes finished. He had about 3 to 4 good starts to close the season which lowered his ERA. He relys on luck to win. Barely strikes out anyone. I’m never confident when hes on the mound. I said the same thing about Carlos Carrasco a couple years ago when the Mets were deciding wether to excersice his contract. Everyone on this website said that it was a no brainer to pick up Carrasco’s option except for me. People called me dumb and stupid, saying that I need to rely “on the stats” instead of my eyes. The next season and beyond hes been arguably one of the worst pitchers in baseball. Looks like I was right, again as usual. Quintana is essentially Carlos Carrasco but slightly better. They are making a mistake in starting him tonight for Game 3 in a do or die

When you needed him most down the stretch …. Jose Quintana was more than there for the Mets.
Very Barry
Quintana has given up a total of 2 runs in his last 25 innings on the bump.

Always the contrarian.

4 shutout innings to open a Wild Card elimination game. Quintana has now more than done his job for the night! I told you guys …. Milwaukee was gonna have a tough task dealing with Quintana. Regardless of how many pitches he has to throw to get the job done.

@DarkSide830 the common fan has no clue about how to run a baseball team. These “experts” that you see on a teams respective “hot stove” just talk out of their ass. They don’t even watch the games. A stat sheet doesnt tell the full story

Would be a huge buy low pickup for my O’s as they enter their rebuild

Maybe the NYM thought were finding another Jose iglesias in Alvarez? joking, but 1 thing regarding Iglesias.. He’s never, ever gotten the attention he’s deserved, from the time he 1st came to the US as a slick fielding/singles hitting prospect until now. The guy has nearly always done a much better job than has been given credit for, but the “ones in the know”, as in analytical people say he doesn’t hit the ball hard and chases too much, therefore is/has always been bound to regress. Why I’ve ALWAYS been more trusting on what my eyes show me than what my term, is some geek says when it comes to ballplayers.
