5:07pm: Hernandez is not in the lineup today, but told reporters (including Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic) that he expects to avoid the injured list after testing on his foot came back clean and he woke up today feeling better. Hernandez added that he hopes to back in the lineup during next week’s series against the Cubs, which begins on Monday.
9:07am: Teoscar Hernandez left Friday’s 3-1 Dodgers loss to the Guardians in the first inning, after the slugger was hit on the left ankle by a pitch from Cleveland starter Matthew Boyd. Hernandez was in obvious discomfort when leaving the field, though the injury has been termed a foot contusion for now since initial x-rays were negative.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters (including MLB.com’s Juan Toribio) that more tests will be done on Hernandez’s ankle, but a trip to the injured list seems unavoidable. “[Hernandez is] as tough as they come and he could barely move his foot….He doesn’t come out of games,” Roberts said. “Afterwards, the pain typically subsides for him, but it didn’t. It’s concerning.”
More will be known about Hernandez’s status later today, yet since it seems like he’ll certainly be going on the IL, the question is now whether or not we’ll see Hernandez on the field again in 2024. Beyond just the regular season, the Dodgers certainly hope to be playing deep into the playoffs, yet such an extended run would obviously be a lot more difficult if Hernandez isn’t available. Winning the NL West is also not a foregone conclusion, as the Dodgers hold a four-game lead on the Padres and a 5.5-game lead on the Diamondbacks.
Considering how Hernandez is also a free agent this winter, it is also conceivable that Friday might’ve marked the end of the left fielder’s tenure in Los Angeles altogether. After a down year with the Mariners in 2023, Hernandez inked a one-year, $23.5MM contract with L.A. last winter with the idea that he could make a quick return to free agency this coming offseason on the heels of a rebound year. That scenario has played out exactly as Hernandez had intended, as he has hit .266/.331/.488 with 28 homers over 581 plate appearances and earned a spot on the NL All-Star team.
Perhaps the key number in that statline is simply the number of plate appearances, as Hernandez has been one of the Dodgers’ pillars of stability amidst an injury-plagued season. Almost literally every member of the L.A. pitching staff has spent time on the IL or had their season already ended by injuries, and Mookie Betts (fractured hand) and Max Muncy (oblique strain) also each missed months of time before returning in August.
Just when it seemed as though Los Angeles finally had its first-choice lineup all intact, however, the position-player depth will again be tested if Hernandez misses time as expected. Any of Enrique Hernandez, Chris Taylor, Andy Pages, or Tommy Edman could be cycled into left field, though the Dodgers had also been using the right-handed hitting Hernandez and Taylor at second and third base, to shield the lefty-swinging Muncy and Gavin Lux against some southpaw pitching. James Outman is the most probable Triple-A call-up, as Outman’s presence would further add to the outfield mix while perhaps keeping Lux and Enrique Hernandez more limited to infield duty.

IMO, the Dodgers need to sign Teoscar to a multi year contract. Very important piece of their lineup! He’s a solid player and a spark plug.
letitbelowenstein
My guess is he’ll end up staying with the Dodgers.
stymeedone
If they keep Teo, they’ll be no room for Soto.

Soto is an east coast guy

The Dodgers signing Soto will be the catalyst to a lockdown and hardcore CBA negotiations.

Taking from the rich and giving to the poor has never been the solution. I don’t claim to know the solution either but as a fan of a big market team I can acknowledge the massive disparity.
BlueSkies_LA
Seems many fans don’t realize that MLB is one business with 30 owners. There is simply no “taking from the rich and giving to the poor” in the business of baseball.

SS Rojas?

That’s a better lineup than most run out there.
I’m sure the F/O would love for one of the young players to fill a starting slot. Vargas didn’t do it. Outman had a good 2023. Pages looked like a fringe starter this year.
Teo has been solid this year and I’m not sure who else the team could sign to replace him:
Soto? LOL. I’m all for that, but…
Bader for CF and Edman to SS? Seems unlikely
Santander? Tyler O’Neil?
Seems more likely the team would go after a SS, Adames or Kim, because they don’t have any real internal options close to the majors and Rojas can’t stay there forever.
Shrutefarm
If they do go after a FA, definitely feel like they should do a short term commitment for an outfielder. They’ve got Dalton Rushing and Josue De Paula in the wings. Rushing was specifically moved to the outfield to give him a better path to the big squad. De Paula is a 5 tool player and is going to get a long look in Spring Training next year, and at worst, will be in AA as a 20 year old.
paddyo furnichuh
Those guys are LHBs, if Teo leaves (as is likely), LAD will need another strong RHB.
Shrutefarm
DodgersBro – not disagreeing with you about SS, but they do have a kid that’s moved up 3 levels in their organization this year. Alex Freeland is a switch hitter with solid glove. We might see him soon too.
Mickey Solis
Oh right I forgot if one player leaves they have to buy another superstar to replace him the LA way.
l9ydodger
@DodgersBro; you do have a good lineup. I would like to see Friedman try to make these player position moves this offseason, sign Adames to play s.s. and try to get Brent Rooker from the A’s to play L.F.
C Smith
1B Freeman
2B Betts – Lux
3B Muncy
SS Adames – Rojas
LF Brent Rooker – A. Pages’
CF Edman – A. Pages’
RF Teoscar H. – Betts
DH Ohtani
I also have no problem with the club convincing Ohtani to give up pitching. Trying to come back from 2 TJ surgeries is proving to be difficult as demonstrated by Buehler. Ohtani has really upped his offensive game this year. The Dodgers definitely need his bat in the lineup everyday! Then, after these 2 acquisitions, address the starting pitching & bullpen yet again. The Dodgers have Dalton Rushing to possibly fit into the lineup next year also. More than likely Lux, Pages’, Zyhir Hope, Muncy (?), some other prospects traded to get Rooker and a S.P. and bullpen depth. Another possibility for left field if Rooker is unavailable, try to swing a deal with the Pirates for Reynolds. Just my thoughts at playing P.O.B.O and GM.
fox471 Dave
Dodgers do not need a SS in 2025, just like they didn’t need one in 2024. Rojas probably has one more decent year in him. And Edman can step in, if that does not pan out.

Bummer, but I can’t help but think that the baseball gods have looked down upon the Dodgers for their greed.
good vibes only
They have the second best record in baseball in spite of injuries all season long. I don’t think the baseball gods are looking down too hard.
Having resources and trying to win by spending them within the rules isn’t greed. Running a club the way the Pirates or Mariners or 70% of the league owners do, solely for the purpose of passive income instead of trying to win a championship, is greed.
stymeedone
@goodvibes
When you refer to clubs like the Pirates or Mariners, you mean teams that are mid to small market, and whose payrolls can’t possibly compete with the large market teams. Teams like the Dodgers and Yankees likely keep a higher percentage as profit than teams that can’t compete with them on payroll. Its bad enough that fans from mid and small market teams start off with a huge disadvantage in available resources, but they have to listen to the spoiled big market fans, who don’t understand economics. The Dodgers have the largest TV contract, because they have the largest market. That’s why they have more resources. That’s why they can spend more. It has nothing to do with altruism and trying to win harder. The Dodgers front office will never have to worry about losing money by adding a player at the deadline. Your team has an economic advantage. That’s all it is.

My team is the Mariners. I understand how the money works and I also understand that the teams make money whether they try or they don’t. The M’s spend in the bottom half of the league despite being top 5 in profit. The Pirates and Reds and all these mid-small market teams in the Midwest rake in the cash and play broke, but not all of them behave the same way. The Brewers and the Twins and the Cardinals try to win. There is a massive amount of revenue sharing in baseball that evens the playing field and some teams try to win and some owners pocket larger shares of the profit.
Andrew Friedman's Burner Account
Wouldn’t greedy mean not spending money on players? Being cheap and keeping more of the profits? I don’t think that word means what you think it means.
sugoi51
It’s apparent, I shouldn’t have inserted “for their greed” in my post lol. Good points all. But best or second best record or not, I still think they’re up against it come playoff time with all the team’s starting pitching injuries and under-performances. After Flaherty, possibly an improving Buehler who do they rely on? Knack? Stone may not come back Glasgow and Yamamoto won’t likely give them more than a few innings at best, Miller and Kersh don’t look to be options. Thoughts?
good vibes only
@sugoi51
Yeah you’re spot on with the rotation. They really need Yamamoto and Glasnow back strong going into the playoffs. Seems like both are nearing a return which would give them a solid playoff rotation. Not a sure bet though, margins are super thin and not a lot of time left to build up pitch counts.

Can Hernandez get the qualifying offer this year or is he already got it?

He is eligible for it
highflyballintorightfield
Shorter term, I’ll be interested to see who gets innings in LF. Taylor subbed in last night and couldn’t have been worse: 2 Ks and a bases-loaded GIDP. Taylor managed to make it to September and therefore probably to 2025, but I hope Pages is given given a fair shot to make the post-season roster instead.
highflyballintorightfield
Pages with a homer tonight.

These initial scans while still full of inflammation seem to sometimes miss small fractures.
Completely conjecture, while not trying to be the doom and gloom guy, but doesn’t it seem these bone bruises turn into a more severe diagnosis many weeks down the line?
Anyway, get well Teoscar. You and your bat seem to be enjoying tinsel town.
Longtimecoming
I don’t think you are wrong on the general idea and don’t think of your saying it out loud is doom and gloom – all the Dodger fans may come out otherwise!
Yes, case by case just have to wait and see.
Pads may have some with Merrill and his patella, ironically.

I think it depends on the location of the injury. If he can pass through a full physical range of motion with his toes and ankle and add weight to the foot, he’s probably good to play soon. Inflammation isn’t the same as swelling.

Give Dalton Rushing a shot in left. Can’t be worse than CT3

Alternate hypothesis: random fluctuation in small samples
We have no idea how a player reacts to pressure, because we have no idea when a player feels pressure.
For what it’s worth, Teo has a (slightly) positive clutch score this year but is negative for his career.

Of course! It’s LA where $1B helps miracles happen and bad-looking injuries to key players become nothing. The best medical staff in baseball too. The initial reports on Graterol and Teoscar were just trying to drum up sympathy from the 99% of the world who hates this Dodgers team and everything they represent.

Thank God Teoscar feels better and will avoid the IL. Great news!!! I hate when player or anyone gets injured.

Dodger fan here. I loathe the idea of Soto as a Dodger. Let the Bombers bomb themselves by signing Soto.

great news he’s back cause it looked bad. as much as i appreciate his attitude, joy for the game and clutch performance i think the team lets him go. the prolific strikeout rate and defensive short comings kind of zero out the positives.
BlueSkies_LA
Similar profile to Muncy, a player the Dodgers have kept on the roster for years. If they don’t sign him back it will be because they have a different plan for LF. Either way a lock for a QO, which gives them some leverage if they want him back.

He’s having a 3 fWAR season. The negatives are not zeroing out the positives
Acoss1331
He’s having a pretty good season at the plate, can’t really say how he has fared defensively since I haven’t seen enough, but he sure would have been a boon this year for the Mariners’s lackluster offense…
BlueSkies_LA
He’s average to a bit below defensively. Not a huge liability but also not a big play sort of defender.
