The Blue Jays announced Thursday that shortstop Bo Bichette suffered a fractured middle finger and has been placed on the 10-day injured list, ending his 2024 season. Bichette was scratched from yesterday’s lineup after suffering a hand injury during pregame fielding drills. Outfielder Jonatan Clase has been recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to take Bichette’s spot on the active roster.
The broken finger caps off a nightmare season for Bichette — one that’s seen the two-time All-Star weather a pair of IL stints due to calf strains that have severely hobbled him. Bichette only just returned from the injured list Tuesday and played in one game after a nearly two-month absence due to that ailing calf. He’ll close out the year with a wildly uncharacteristic .225/.277/.322 batting line and four homers — a far cry from the .299/.340/.487 batting line he carried into the 2024 campaign.
Bichette was the subject of trade rumblings early this summer, but Toronto GM Ross Atkins quickly shut down any real notion of selling low on his star shortstop when he said in mid-June that trading Bichette (or teammate Vladimir Guerrero Jr.) “[didn’t] make any sense” for the Jays. While the Blue Jays ultimately operated as deadline sellers, they mostly moved players who’d have been up for free agency at the end of the current season.
All indications have been that Atkins & Co. want to retool the roster and take aim at a return to contending next season. Bichette, who recently voiced a strong desire to stay with the Jays, will presumably be a part of those efforts — although other teams around the league will likely at least inquire about the possibility of prying him loose from the only organization he’s known to this point in his career.
The 2025 season will be Bichette’s final year before reaching free agency for the first time. The Jays signed him to a three-year, $33.6MM deal buying out all three of his arbitration seasons back in February of 2023. That contract, which did not delay his path to the open market, calls for Bichette to earn $16.5MM next season in what will be his age-27 campaign.

4th injury this year. What a nightmare season for Bo.
MR. Q
He was just been activated from IL too. Blue Jays should’ve shut him down for the season when their postseason chance has evaporated.
Slider_withcheese
He’s gone this winter anyway
Patriot12992
No way, why would the Jays sell him for pennies? His value is in the tank right now, even if you wanted to trade him you gotta play him and rebuild value by next seasons trade deadline.

Should bounce back. Good ball player
mlb fan
“Should bounce bank”…The M’s(and several others)should be on the phone about this. A lot of guys use injuries as an excuse, but I’ve seen enough of Bo to think injury is what sank his season.
When he’s on, he’s an elite hitter with some pop and excellent contact skills. Waiting until their stock has fallen is a great way to acquire coveted players.
Patriot12992
The Jays aren’t going to give him away and no one is going to offer much. He will be a Jay next season no other scenario makes much sense, even if he was a Marlin he wouldn’t be moved, needs to rebuild his value.

Acuna, Christian Scott, Nick Morabito, and Tylor Megill for Bo Bichette. Who says no?
mlb fan
“Who says no”…The Mets say “no”, for one.
RunDMC
The same Christian Scott undergoing TJS/UCL surgery as of 9/18 missing all of 2025?

@mlb fan Bo Bichette is one of the best players in the league, why would the Mets say no? One bad season doesnt define a player
mlb fan
“One of the best”…Read my other posts. I’m still quite high on Bo Bo Bichette. I just don’t see the Mets focused on him because they have greater needs, namely replacing several pitchers who are leaving after the season. I like the Mariners(and a couple others )for Bo Bichette actually.
Poolhalljunkies
LFGmets…You think 1 year of control over bo is worth those 4 players? Based ln comparable recent deals i dont think 4 for 1 with 1 year of control works for the mets..id be an overpay at this point plus where does he play 2b? That seems a waste of his defense
LFGMets (Metsin7) #BannedForBeingABaseballExpert
@Poolhalljunkies they should trade for Bichette and then extend him. Its a no brainer
Poolhalljunkies
What if they fail to extend him? Thats no guarantee..is he still worth it?
Patriot12992
If I was the jays I would take that deal in a heartbeat.

Overrated. Guy’s so fragile. Not worth the long-term investment.
mlb fan
“Guy’s so fragile”…Now admittedly I’m a “Bo” fan, but he’s had 600+ plate appearances the last 3 yrs str8 prior to this season and one of those three yrs, he had 697 plate appearances. Yes, he’s been “fragile” this year but not necessarily historically.

Yorky: In 2021 and 2022 Bichette played 159 of 162 games each, so whatever injuries you say he sustained in those seasons did not hinder him. Last season he missed about 28 games and still maintained his strong numbers. Prior to 2021 he was basically a rookie still trying to figure it out. So with those strong platform seasons of ’21-’23 I would still be very high on Bichette and agree strongly with ‘mlb fan’ that the Mariners should target him like a laser beam.
ChuckyNJ
15-day IL is for pitchers — Bichette was placed on the 10-day IL. As the move is not retroactive, his season is effectively over.

Has his finger been fractured all year? Because that would make sense.
jimmertee
As said when Bo was coming up the minors he will be an injury prone ball player who at the end of the career will be looked at as a below average SS with a good bat.
It is a bad year for him, and We have seen the extent of his fragility yet. Wait for it.
If the Jays could get a haul, trade him sometime in December.

“as said”
sorry, nobody remembers your comment from 5 years ago
YankeesBleacherCreature
Nor has he been a below average bat prior to this season. Weird take.
its_happening
Below average SS with a good bat is what Jimmerson said.
But yeah, still a weird take. I think Bo could be a perennial all-star at 2B.
jimmertee
I agree. Bo should be at 2nd.
I don’t put up old takes for me to look good but to illustrate what a player is and what a player isn’t and that hasn’t changed in 5 years.. And he isn’t a reliable healthy shortstop and never will be.
Sell now or put him at 2nd base is the right answer for Bo’s future with or not with the Jays..
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
Was his father Dante injured a lot? If I can remember that far back it seemed like he played DH a lot and had back issues. Hopefully Bo Bo didn’t inherit injury bugs from his Papi.

Feel like thoughts on Bo range wildly.
He’s not injury prone, this was his first year missing significant time. He’s neither good or bad defensively at SS, he’s just ok. Should he play SS or 2B, for his long term health, his bat and his defensive improvement, 2B.
Don’t trade him this offseason when his value is low, he’ll have value. Short term rentals at the deadline that get the team value are usually for pitchers. Teams take a longer view on their defence/batting generally. A contender with a middle infield hole will likely make a better offer now that that would in July.
