Despite months of trade speculation, Garrett Crochet was not moved at the deadline. His contract status seemed to be a big reason. A few days before the deadline, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that Crochet sought an extension if he was going to pitch in the postseason. Whether he'd simply have refused to play in October if he landed with a contender isn't clear. Crochet didn't have the leverage to force a team to sign him long term.
At the same time, Crochet's stance complicated the White Sox's efforts to find a package they felt worthwhile. GM Chris Getz seemed taken aback by the public revelation of Crochet's extension desire (link via Scott Merkin of MLB.com). While Getz maintained that the relationship between the player and team was still strong, he said the manner in which the situation was addressed was "a bit hurtful ... considering I felt like we could have handled it a little bit differently."
The Sox continued to discuss Crochet right up to the July 30 deadline. No deal came together. Only the White Sox know whether that's because of the extension hold-up. In any case, he'll finish out the year in Chicago. Crochet could be the most popular trade candidate of the upcoming offseason. The Sox are very unlikely to be competitive in the next two seasons. Chicago should try to move Crochet this winter.
Maybe they won't need to make progress on an extension to do so. Crochet's desire for a long-term deal was tied to his workload reaching a level which he'd never approached in college or the minor leagues. His camp was worried about his arm health if he pitched into October. That's not happening with the White Sox, who can pull back on his workload in an effort to keep him on the field. They're already doing so. Crochet hasn't thrown more than four innings in a game since the start of July. That's generally not a performance question but a clear goal to avoid stressing his arm. Chicago pulled him yesterday after 57 pitches and four innings of one-run ball with four strikeouts.
Even if an extension isn't an absolute necessity to facilitate a trade, Crochet is presumably still amenable to discussing a long-term contract. That's unlikely to come with the White Sox, who are at the nadir of a rebuild and have never guaranteed a player more than $75MM (the ill-fated Andrew Benintendi deal). If a contender wanted to extend Crochet -- either as a condition of a trade or simply after acquiring him -- what kind of price could it take?

My guess
At maximum 10 years up to 275 million with a ton of incentives and 2 or 3 opt-outs in the contract
MLB Top 100 Commenter
You are kidding, right. He will not get that much.
User 4245925809
Used to be a time, not that long ago even, when a team acquiring a soon to be FA would often get a like 48-72hr window to sign said player to an extension and the deal was contigent upon it being worked out, less it become null and void.
Why that sort of deal wasn’t (or couldn’t?) have been made leads me to think the asking price from the ChiSox was extremely high (we know that) and the $$$ asked for by Crochet, likewise.
Dogbone
Reinsdorf would never pay, nor ever make an offer – of anywhere near what it would actually take to extend him.
But I don’t see them trading him during this offseason. He’s been throwing poorly for the last month and teams might be reluctant to pay the Chisox, full value. Sox better hope he’s healthy in 2025.
mmanion44
A contract like that from Reinsdorf????
He will not go longer than 3 years with a pitcher. There is no way we lock him up. Any extension talk is simply the same old, tired lip service coming from a hamstrung GM.
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
When I proposed it I assumed he got traded to a team like the dodgers or Mets or even padres
Also i thought 275 mil could be the maximum if all incentives are reached like cy young votes and all stars and innings
vtadave
No one is giving out 10 year deals to a guy with an innings restriction and 2 years left until free agency. He’s lucky if he gets 5/100.
Now if Paul Skenes comes to the Pirates and asks for 10 years , they should absolutely give him a blank check,

The last ‘major’ White Sox contract that was given out to a pitcher, I believe, was John Danks, and that was because KW felt like he had to make that deal after refusing to resign Buehrle for what he wanted, and we all saw how that played out. However, Crochet is a stud, where Danks was Williams favorite player from a trade, an overreaction to Buehrle leaving, and was destined to have his arm/shoulder issues. Crochet is worth it, a pitcher closer to a Sale or Randy Johnson. I doubt that Crochet is asking for anything extreme, but Im sure its not cheap either. Its just that ‘The Miser’ will not pay, Then blame his current stadium or the fans for it.
Very Barry
5 years for $150 million will get Crochet done with an extension. He will agree to innings incentives to get to that number. It is gonna take something resembling the Jose Quintana deal between Sox and Cubs to get the trade done. We got Cubs top arm (Dylan Cease) and bat (Eloy Jimenez) from the farm system.

Anyone stupid enough to give a pitcher a ten year contract deserves to get fired immediately.

So should cashman be fired for paying gerrit cole
User 401527550
He’s only half way through it and missed half this season. Do you think it’s aging well?
Astros_fan_in_Aus
Cashman should be fired for being Cashman.
Anthony maresca
Plus Cole will opt out forcing Yankees to add 1/36 onto that 9/320 deal he signed so hexwill be owed 5/188 at age 34

@Mets fan…: MLB teams likely have insurance on any player missing time, especially pitchers, so I doubt that matters much to the club in terms of money. Bottom line if that player helps you win at least one WS during their contract, they think it IS aging well.
The current state of affairs, you pay for the talent. There is risk involved, but ask any GM, they will tell you they want to win at least 1 WS, While it would be nice to get more than that, they are not thinking about winning anything more than that.
Reinsdorf refuses to pay what it takes and that is why his org only has 7 playoff appearances in 40+ seasons of him being an owner. He is a sad joke on the game and players know it, that is why they only use going to the Sox as a bargaining chip to get another team to pay more.
User 401527550
Do you think insurance is free?

They don’t have to move him this Winter, but if the offer is good enough then sure.

Even the Crochet fans are sick of the Crochet rumors for 2024..
Butter Biscuits
Something tells me Crochet was the one who fell asleep in the bullpen
GarryHarris
Who cares! He is not a team player.
Thefrogsaregey
Neither is your favorite player
GarryHarris
Whom?
dkhits20
Why would he care about the future of the White Sox if he isn’t going to be a part of it? He’s simply following the advice of his agent which most players do. And the concern about jumping from 24 innings (MLB and AAA combined) in 2023 to potentially 180 innings in 2024 when factoring in postseason is legitimate.
Anthony maresca
Yankees Gil pitched only 27 innings in 2 yrs snd was at 126 innings before his injury. Thank GOD he will be out for 3-4 weeks so Yankees cannot destroy his arm that technically should had a 125-140 innings limit for entire year! Its not work the risk for a 26 yrs old top starter
nrd1138
Not a team player, OK, Ill bite, why is he not a ‘team player’? I saw him make every start he was in line for, he accepted the limiting of his pitch count by the org. He is only pitching 4 innings each time he goes out now, which if I were a starter I would rail hard against if I was thinking of myself as I would want to pitch to win games.
To the best of my knowledge, he has never talked crap against a teammate or even the org.
What? The contract extension thing? That is your reason for such a silly statement?
painhertz
They’ll probably ruin him before he’s a free agent in 2027. So, they’ll dump him at the TDL in 2026.
TomToms
You got that right Johnny Utah. I could not agree more.
Blackpink in the area
Crochet is a very difficult player to put a value on. I do believe because of his past injury history he might be more likely to sign an extension but it’s also why teams would not be willing to give him ace level years or dollars. Maybe 5 years 115 million on top of his 2 remaining arb years?
mlb fan
“5 years 115 million”..There’s no way I’d commit $100M+ to a pitcher that prior to this year had a high(year) of 54 innings pitched. I’d wait at least another half season(next year) of success before I’d even consider going 5 years on him. The last thing a team wants is to sign a pitcher who’s quickly injured(or unable to pitch)to an expensive 5+ year contract. There’s a reason teams are given a 6 yr control window by the MLB CBA.
Blackpink in the area
Yeah sure a team could wait to offer him an extension but it gets more expensive that way. As of today that’s what i would offer him. It’s a gamble.
mlb fan
“It’s a gamble”…True that.
nrd1138
Fairly certain MLB team have insurance policies against the player being hurt, its why the focus of injuries is not about costs when a guy is out, only lack of being on the field.
Also, every contract is a gamble, whether it be a pitcher or a position player.

40k Al’s Beef sandwiches aav over 6 years. Opt out after 4. Option for a 7th year if he finishes 5th or better in Cy Yooug voting for at least half the length of the contract.

…upvote for usage of Al’s Beef. Man I miss that spot.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Is it not there anymore? Or are you not near Chicago? I recently found out you can get it shipped to you or anyone else across the country. $130 for a sandwich kit of 8 sandwiches or $170 for a 16 sandwiches .
DonOsbourne
Who cares? At this point he is a guy with one healthy, productive season on his resume playing for the worst team in baseball.
Thefrogsaregey
Dumb comment.
Astros_fan_in_Aus
Why is it ? He has only one year on his resume.. That is a small sample to use if he is wanting a multi-year contract.
SweetBabyRayKingsThickThighs
He’ll be traded in the offseason and if he likes his new team and pitches well enough there could be mutual interest for an extension
lesterdnightfly
Crochet won’t get extended. He’ll be traded for prospects who most likely won’t pan out–It’s the Getz Syndrome.
Plus, Jerry won’t pay out for pitchers. He has to pinch his nickels so he can give big contracts to the Andrew Benintendis of the world.
Aiden Awe
JR was willing to pay for Zack Wheeler, extended John Danks, Chris Sale, Lance Lynn.
nrd1138
Oh Please….
Danks was average at best and an overreaction by the org because Buehrle was passed on and it turned out Buehrle was not asking for a lot..
Lynn was a great pitcher,, 5-10 years prior (‘The Chairman’s MO btw), and I think the org extended him because of who they gave up on at the time to get him.
Chris Sale was a cheap extension, not the money he got after leaving the Sox.
Did they ever get Wheeler? No, cause Reinsdorf does just enough to sucker people into thinking he is really being competitive
lesterdnightfly
Someone is bitterly jealous of professional athletes. Seek help for your anger.
nrd1138
Im starting to think that ‘Johnny utah’ is nothing more than the Chairman himself Jerry-atric Reinsdorf as only the the Miser would be this @#$hurt over Crochet.
Seriously though, I have to confess, I missed the articles where he, or his agent, specifically stated all of that,
What I have seen online and watching the news on Crochet:
-Crochet simply said he wanted an extension if we were to pitch in the playoffs. He NEVER said he would not pitch in the playoffs.Plus teams can ignore such things, as the trade is between two teams, not aFA signing.
-He did note he did not want to be used out of the bullpen, but I mean he is a starter so….
-Nothing I have read or heard in discussions about Crochet says anything about him self monitoring his IP, What I have heard is for the current season there is a IP limit, in which case this org, not Crochet, is doing that. He just agrees its smart given this is his first full season and the most he has pitched.
-As for his last demand, where was it mentioned that he dictates about where he goes (and really how is that different from a LOT of other players in the league)?
Finally, NO money or year term numbers have been released by either side, so you are just angry over nothing basically.. Of course the player will ask for the world, then the owner offers anything but, then they come together, its called negotiations.
However, given the owner’s proclivity for being a miser, I tend to lean on its an ORG issue, not a player issue in this case.
Seriously, ARE you Reinsdorf?!
Ma4170
The statement that pablo lopez hadnt shown ace potential is what threw me. Aside from ERA, he was at clear ace level last season and had shown stretches of that before. Nothing crochet has done shows that he should earn more other than him being younger.
