The Tigers announced that outfielder Kerry Carpenter has been reinstated from the 60-day injured list. Infielder/outfielder Ryan Vilade was optioned to Triple-A Toledo to open an active roster spot. In a corresponding 40-man roster move, right-hander Brendan White was recalled from Double-A Erie and placed on the 60-day injured list with a right elbow strain.
The return of Carpenter should be a nice boost for the Detroit lineup. He has appeared in 199 major league games to this point in his career and has hit 34 home runs in that time. His .275/.336/.495 slash line translates to a 128 wRC+, indicating he’s been 28% better than league average overall.
He landed on the IL at the end of May due to an unknown lower back injury that was later reported to be a lumbar spine stress fracture. He eventually missed over two months, getting transferred to the 60-day IL along the way, but is now able to rejoin the lineup. The Tigers are nine games back of a playoff spot and have long odds for a miracle run at this point, but it will still be good for Carpenter to get some playing time before the offseason kicks in.
White, 25, has been on Detroit’s 40-man roster since November of 2022. Last year, he was able to toss 40 2/3 innings in the big leagues with a 5.09 ERA, 24.9% strikeout rate, 8.5% walk rate and 51.8% ground ball rate.
This year, he was optioned during Spring Training and has been in the minors all season. At the end of May, the club listed him as dealing with right elbow inflammation, per Evan Woodbery of MLive Media Group on X. He was still experiencing elbow discomfort in July, per Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press on X.
At this point, details are still murky about what’s next but it seems the club doesn’t expect him back this year, hence the 60-day IL placement. If there’s a silver lining for White, it’s that he’ll get major league pay and service time for the rest of the season. He was able to accrue 111 days of service last year, putting him 61 days shy of the one-year mark. There’s not enough time left in 2024 for him to get over that line but he’ll creep towards it and get a little pay bump while navigating his injury absence.

Pretty good

Jung can’t field a ball if his life depended upon it and Dingler is the future starting catcher not Rogers, who can’t hit his way out of a paper bag.
Motor City Beach Bum
Hopefully Dingler works out. They don’t have anyone else in the high minors to help out right now.
Stat_head
Rogers put up a Grand Slam and 7 RBI. Apparently found a way out of that bag.
tigerfan4ever
Blind squirrel does find a nut on occasion.
rellime 2
Nah. Move Keith to 1st. Move Jung back to 2nd where he won a minor league gold glove and put Tork at DH. Vierling 3rd base (given this batting order)
Giwesi
Jung will be fine. Lol Rogers hit two HR today but yah still he’s a good defensive catcher imo that will occasionally hit the long ball
tigerfan4ever
Rogers had a homer and two doubles (one of which he was out trying to stretch it into a triple). His big day lifted his batting average to .200. His offense took a step back this season. He’s good defensively, granted but won’t stick around just based on that. Jung’s defense is brutal at this point. He won’t get promoted until there is some serious improvement.
dkhits20
I think if we’re serious about making Jung part of our future, he needs to go back to 2B… a position he can actually field very well. Some say he’s still young and has time to improve at 3B. I disagree. He’s SO bad there that his ceiling would still be below average. I’m all for grooming Hao Yu Lee to be a 3B – see if that works any better.
Re: Rogers… I’d be willing to bet that he’ll be sticking around as long as we still have Skubal.
Tomas80
Typically I’d agree that Rogers can’t hit but then he’s goes off last night with three XBH, 7 RBI. First time Tigers catcher did that since 1974. Rogers hits it hard or not at all. Dingler will need to prove he’s much better.
84LeFlore
Not many catchers CAN hit their way out of a paper bag. Rogers runs into one every once in a while, handles the P’s well and is well-liked in the clubhouse. I think Dingler/Rogers will be a good tandem at C – esp w/DD getting more ABs.
I don’t know what to make of Jung. Apparently a minor league Gold Glover at 2B but a Nick Castellanos at 3B. Not only is Keith in his way at 2B, so is McGonigle.
stymeedone
Just add in Dingler as the 2nd Catcher, Avila did a nice job of drafting.
tigerfan4ever
I believe that as much as you love Harris, STYMEEDONE. Your love affair with Avila shines on!

Too early to call Tork a bust. He had 31 HR 94 RBI last season. That being said, he could be one if he doesn’t regain the power of 2023 and improve his defense.
Luke Strong
Sounds like a team destined for mediocrity. Greene is the best of the bunch by far but injury prone, Carpenter now also an ongoing injury risk. Keith showed promise as a rookie and hopefully gets better. Jury still out on Meadows, I’m rooting for him to hit but have my doubts as to his ability. And who knows with Tork, what a conundrum he has become. I doubt they’re replacing Baez and just going to eat $65 million. And what was once a strong point, starting pitching, is no longer. Beyond Skubal, nothing. Olsen is an injury risk. Can’t really count on Jobe until he is proven. There are still 2-3 more years left to this rebuild.
For Love of the Game
They ARE going to eat the $65 mill. Look at Baez’s OPS each year. Consistently .800 with the Cubs. But then 6-something, 5-something, 4-something each year with Detroit. I think he’s hurt.
Luke Strong
I’ll believe it when I see it. Chris Ilitch is notoriously cheap and he is pulling a tidy profit out of this club even when they lose. As bad as Baez has been, and he has been so bad that no team in the league would have him on their 40-man roster and he would be out of professional baseball if not for his contract, he’ll likely be back for at least one more season.
Motor City Beach Bum
Olsen was great before he got injured. Mize hasn’t been terrible either. Next year: Skubal, free agent #2 or 3 starter (Flaherty, Verlander, Buehler?), Olsen, Mize and one of Maeda, Hurter, Montero, Madden or Lockhart until Jobe is ready.

Depending on the health and SP rotation next season, could be a very interesting season next year

Good news for a change. Happy Carp is back. Next piece of good news…Baez gets cut or benched and they bring up Sweeney for a test drive.

And Carpenter goes deep! Welcome back!

As I type that, he goes deep again!

Glad Carp is back. Carp, Parker & Greene make a nice OF going forward, IMO. I expect Perez & J-Hen (and Vierling) to get more reps in the OF/DH from the bench.
I don’t see Tork coming back this year the way he’s been playing. They’ll probably pencil him in for 1B in Detroit for ’25 and pray. I don’t have a lot of faith in him anymore. I can see him blossoming in a change of scenery, say Arizona or St. Louis. The Tigers probably should have just left Tork at 3B from the start.
Colt Keith is our 2B for 2025, but I think he may end up taking Tork’s place at 1B in 2026, especially if Tork tanks and McGonigle -who’s expected to move to 2B – is ready.
Rainier sounds more like the future SS in the Tigers’ eyes, but it would be nice to see Sweeney or ANYBODY take Javy’s job in the meantime. Dingler/Jake are locks at C & Vierling 3B/OF & Ibanez IF are good utility guys. Sweeney or Kreidler may end up taking McKinstrey’s spot.
tigerfan4ever
Tork homered again tonight for Toledo. Rainer? Due in 2027. Way in the future Tigers. Sweeney is next up at SS, probably. Seems like he’s replaced Navagato in the pecking order at shortstop. No more Kreidler or McKinstry please and thank you, I’d rather have Baez.
Giwesi
Navigato has good offensive stats. So what are his limitations? No call up
tigerfan4ever
Navigato has no real position to play in Toledo as he’s been passed by Sweeney. He’s playing the outfield now. Good offense at shortstop and I’ve advocated for him to be promoted in the past over Kreidler but I don’t see the Tigers as being very serious about him, else they wouldn’t have acquired Sweeney. Navigato isn’t even ranked in the Tigers top thirty prospects as Sweeney is at #20.
dkhits20
@84Leflore… You’re forgetting about Hao Yu Lee who as of now is a 2B and may be in the big show sometime next season. Maybe they give him some reps at SS or 3B between now and then?
Giwesi
Yah a good problem to have as long as he keeps hitting
84LeFlore
Good point. I wonder where they will try to put Lee defensively. I keep hearing good reports on him. We definitely need a 3B & SS before we need another 2B. We’re getting a glut at 2B and Colt isn’t getting traded. (I don’t want him to, either.) May lead to a trade of one of those 2Bs though.
Motor City Beach Bum
Maybe Lee or Jung would net a good young SS in trade.
Senor Smoke
We’ll see how Riley’s time at Toledo goes together with Tork. First off, don’t believe AAA pitching is a breeze….Tork hasn’t see any of these guys before this summer; they throw very hard and have nasty breaking pitches…just not as deep as MLB. I don’t see any incentives for Tork to perform there….Hinch finally broke him and I believe he wants out and probably won’t be back this year or ever. He can still exact a good A or AA trade piece from a NL team and play in a smaller stadium for a manager who doesn’t need to cheat to win.. Tork is a west coast kid and didn’t ask or have any say in who drafted him…..he’ll be fine somewhere, anywhere else.
Motor City Beach Bum
Seattle and Arizona might both need someone at 1B next year. Both have some nice young minor leaguers.
Senor Smoke
He lives in Chandler, Az….the Snakes and Tork could make sweet music together.

WELCOME BACK KERRY ! What a rout tonight. Put on the Gap band, the Tigers dropped a bomb on them. Let’s dance, what a hoot.
Motown is My Town
And watch them get shut out tomorrow….hope not but thats been their trend
tigerfan4ever
That’s true with any team. 15-1 is not sustainable in a game that a good hitter fails 70% of the time. It was a fun game to watch tonight nevertheless.

Senor Smoke
Vilade needs a haircut and a shave….looks like something from the Manson Family…..AAA player. Great show by Kerry but I still wonder why his batting stance collapses on contact. Watch his front leg to see what I mean. Nobody says he can’t be a first-rate RFer anymore….that was always somebody listening to an Evan Petzold type of idiot. As for Tork, the Hens’ site says his HR last night had a 25d launch-angle. If that’s true, which I doubt, he’ll never hit over .240 in The Show. Crazy….only slightly under a level swing can get good wood on the movement from MLB pitches. I’ll take 2 doubles every other game from him over a HR and 4Ks. He was at 17d this Spring, more angle than the 14d he averaged last year. Hinch again…… still not aware the Shift is gone. Riley is just as bad and if you want his hammys to keep getting yanked, keep his swing at well past 20d. That angle on any pitch above the belt gets nothing but air. and all the energy of the swing absorbed by the lower back and thighs instead of the abs and shoulders..
84LeFlore
I get the impression the Tigers do not like Petzold – especially Tarik, who would have murdered him already if glares could kill.
Senor Smoke
A lot of the fellas have taken exception to Petzold’s take on Torkelson, demanding he be demoted…calling him “unplayable”. He’s a computer nerd who works on the cheap for a failing rag, FP. My take is he’s Hinch’s snitch and sends along what he hears in the locker room for access. Cheap and tawdry sums up this organization…worst I’ve ever see of my team since childhood.
