It’s already been an eventful morning with an early Braves DFA and a major shakeup in Chicago. Here are three more things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world throughout the day:
1. deGrom to face hitters:
Two-time Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom made just six starts in a Rangers uniform last year before undergoing Tommy John surgery, but the 36-year-old hurler is poised to take in major step in his rehab today. Per Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, deGrom is scheduled to throw a bullpen session before facing minor league hitters for a 20-pitch simulated inning of work. It’s his first time facing hitters since going under the knife, but Grant suggests that if today’s session goes well the veteran right-hander could begin a rehab assignment in fairly short order. Long regarded as perhaps the best pitcher in all of baseball when healthy enough to take the mound, deGrom has a phenomenal 2.08 ERA, 2.11 FIP, and 35.6% strikeout rate since the start of the 2018 season but has been limited to just 32 starts since the start of the 2021 campaign by a number of injuries.
2. Ryan exits with injury:
Twins right-hander Joe Ryan looked quite good through two innings of work against the Cubs yesterday, striking out two while allowing nothing outside of a solo home run to Chicago rookie Michael Busch. Unfortunately, those two innings would be his only work of the game as he uncorked a high splitter way out of the zone and called to the dugout, exiting shortly thereafter due to what the team later referred to as triceps tightness. After the game, manager Rocco Baldelli spoke to reporters (including Dan Hayes of The Athletic) regarding the issue but provided little in terms of concrete details regarding the injury.
Baldelli suggested that the club would know more about the severity of the issue in a few days, but it was likely that the right-hander would miss “at least some time.” Any absence of any significance would be a frustrating development for a Twins club that has already had its starting pitching depth tested by the losses of Anthony DeSclafani (before the season began) and Chris Paddack (who recently returned to the IL for a second time this season). Louie Varland appears to be the most likely candidate to a step into a rotation role in Ryan’s stead, though the 26-year-old has struggled at both the major and minor league levels this year and seems unlikely to provide production close to what Ryan has offered this year: a 3.60 ERA and 3.44 FIP in 23 starts.
3. Hays to undergo further evaluation:
Newly-acquired Phillies outfielder Austin Hays is just ten games into his tenure with the club but may be headed for the shelf after exiting yesterday’s game with what the club announced as hamstring tightness when he pulled up while running to first base in the third inning. Manager Rob Thomson told reporters (including Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer) that the club was not yet sure how serious the issue is and that he’ll be evaluated further today.
The addition of Hays, who the club acquired from the Orioles ahead of the deadline in exchange for Seranthony Dominguez and Cristian Pache, added a right-handed bat to the club’s outfield corps who could mix and match with Brandon Marsh and Johan Rojas in left and center field. The 28-year-old is hitting a roughly league-average .256/.310/.395 in 73 games between Baltimore and Philadelphia this year, and if he misses time his absence will likely open the door for Weston Wilson to get additional playing time going forward.

It sure would be nice too see deGrom on a mound again.
Bart Harley Jarvis
It would great to see him get to 85 wins for his career.

Hurt again? It never ends!
OGkush
What’s the over/under on innings pitched before DeGrom is injured again. I’ll definitely take the under. Great pitcher who happens to be made of glass
solaris602
I’ll predict he’s healthy for the rest of the year, but he’ll be shut down in ST for several weeks due to some random injury they’ll have to find a name for.
TheStevilEmpire1
I bet if you told The Rangers before 2023 that they would win the World Series without deGrom, they would have never signed him.
For the life of me, I still don’t understand how he secured that contract with his health issues. In comparison, Chris Carpenter made an improbable late career comeback after missing 2 years. It’s not impossible but I can’t imagine it’s likely for deGrom.
With Carpenter, he was 37 when he retired, deGrom will be 37 trying to comeback. I think Texas still owes him 150 million dollars. Wow.
Patriot12992
I agree but deGrom was historically great, I think people forget the run he went on. Made a team put the blinders on.
dasit
his first 10 starts in 2021 was arguably the greatest 10-start run in history
TheStevilEmpire1
I certainly haven’t forgotten his dominance. It’s unfortunate his career has taken the direction it has. That’s just a whole helluva lot for the injured version.
Ma4170
I actually think he’ll stay healthy through next season.

Good luck to deGrom, hope for nothing but health and success to the goat!
gbs42
Goat? Your calendar- and memory – must not go back very far.
Patriot12992
There is a strong argument that deGroms run a few years back was the greatest pitching run of all time he might not have the longevity but no pitcher ever had a run like that
He has the record for straight starts allowing 1 or fewer runs.
And the record for most consecutive starts with 3 or fewer runs.
At one point in 2022 he had allowed 1 or fewer runs in 49 percent of his starts.
Guy was cracked
gbs42
Goat is, by definition, the greatest of all time, not the greatest for a season or two.
Clofreesz
deGrom, just please stay healthy.
Maybe you can save our season. We’re all desperate.
Old York
deGrom is the Mike Trout of pitchers. Guy’s cooked.
deepseamonster32
If he was the Mike Trout of pitchers, it would take him 3 years to recover from Tommy John

“…but the 36-year-old hurler is poised to take in major step…
1. Grammar, NIck.
2. I’m already tired of “poised to…” as the latest glib phrase.
lesterdnightfly
(Of course I misspelled Nick as an example for the rest of you to avoid.)
Bill M
You also forgot to close the quote. I’m guessing Nick probably doesn’t care.
lesterdnightfly
Yes, thanks; I leave many such examples for others to avoid.

I got the chance to see deGrom pitch in person back in ’21. Looked like he was going up against a Little League lineup with how dominant he was.
He’s one of the guys (like Trout) that makes the game better when he’s healthy. Hopefully we get to see him pitch again for the rest of the season.
just_thinkin
Feel bad for Hays, but that’s kind of part of the reason why the O’s made him a bench player. Starting every day just isn’t something his body can handle.
Hope it’s a quick stint.
solaris602
As long as PHI doesn’t see this as an opportunity bring Pache back, they should be fine. I know a lot of Phillie fans got attached to him, but the fact is the guy is never gonna hit. Better off giving Wilson a shot.
609Collectibles
Once again Johan Rojas will be featured in CF. Marsh will start in LF, Weston Wilson vs. LHP. If you’re ever gonna get hot kid, now is the time.
JSubs
Joe Ryan got Roger Beshens Football SLider fumble-itis.
Contact the Rog for good vibes.
Patriot12992
The memory hole fans fall into with deGrom is wild, guy went on one of the greatest pitching runs of all time. Feel like he doesn’t get the respect he deserves.
solaris602
I don’t think anyone actually forgets that, but it’s the looooong stretches of IL placement that make fans temper their enthusiasm for his abilities in the rare cases when he’s healthy.
Ma4170
It didnt start til mid 2021 though. From 2014-21 with the exception of missing last six weeks of 2016, he was a rock. Yes, since then, definite frustration and injury issues galore, but he was so good for 7.5 seasons, which isnt that short a period.
jdgoat
Trevor Richards can slide right into Ryan’s spot in the rotation. I’m sorry Twins fans.
Cat Mando
He had a few years of incredible excellence but not enough, IMO, to warrant it. When you look at career #’s compared to other HOF pitchers he falls a bit short.
mlb fan
“When healthy”…Nobody thats injured as often as Jacob Degrom belongs in Cooperstown. Just the fact that you have to qualify “when healthy”, overwhelmingly suggests he’s not a HOFER. That being said, he’s almost certainly a “Mets” team Hall of Famer, but most certainly not the one in Cooperstown. They are not pitchers, but Don Mattingly & Keith Hernandez have a FAR better HOF case.
mlb fan
“No clue why he isn’t in”…I don’t get it either. Is there off the field stuff I’m unaware of?..Seems he wouldn’t be a longtime Mets announcer if he was a trouble maker. For several years I just assumed Keith Hernandez was already in the HOF and was surprised when I found out 8 years ago he wasn’t in.
jdgoat
Good point. I’d probably lean both shouldn’t be in but I’d argue the more dominant guy has a better case than the one who’s just in for accumulating counting stats. Shame we couldn’t see him stay healthy more.
Angels & NL West
I haven’t checked the numbers, but comparing deGrom to Koufax may be worthwhile in that they both had dominant peaks, but lacked longevity, and big career numbers, due to injuries.
Cat Mando
Angels & NL West…..
I have….compare the 6 years of SK utter dominance to JDG full 10 years
games SK – 223 JDG – 215
W?L SK – 12/47 JDG -84/57
ERA SK – 2.15 JDG 2.53
This is where the really separate because of JDG injuries (he didn’t qualify to lead the league many years).
SK lead the league in wins 3 time, ERA 5 times, CG twice, SHO 3 times SO 4 times, BF 2 times, ERA+ twice FIP 6 time, WHIP 4 times, H9 5 times.
JDG in 10 seasons lead the league in ERA 1 time. SO 2 times, ERA+ once and FIP once.
Remember…that is 6 years for SK and 10 for JDG
Sunday Lasagna
deGrom
1,356 innings 2.53 ERA 2.59 FIP
Mets had another guy once, over his first 6 years he threw a similar number of innings
1,291 innings 2.64 ERA 2.53 FIP
They also had this other guy, over his first 5 years he threw a similar number of innings
1,379 innings 2.34 ERA 2.57 FIP
Injuries derailed deGrom, cocaine and other issues were trouble for that second guy and well that third guy, he was just Terrific
YankeesBleacherCreature
Along with the fact that Mussina helped his team reach the postseason 7 out of his 8 seasons with the Yankees and also pitched well in October, he has thrown 2200 more career innings than DeGrom. He doesn’t have the extended peak years for HOF consideration right now. I’m sure some voters will give him votes if he was on the ballot today but the tally will fall way short.
phillyballers
Josh Johnson and Jake Peavy is who I think of when I think about deGrom
Ma4170
I dont even think its a doubt. All time MLB whip leader primarily pitching in an offensive era. And all time MLB leader in QS percentage. People who are still enamored with wins should know how many games he gave up 2er or less and didnt win, its almost a crime.
From 2014-23, even w the time missed to injuries the last few years, hes 19th in MLB in IP. Second in ERA, first in FIP, 3rd in whip, 2nd in xFIP, 7th in k/bb, 6th in K. It wasnt just his dominant 2018 and beyond, he won RoY in 2014 and was top 10 in CY in 2015 and 2017. Hes the best in history in two stats. Regardless of these later injuries, hes a HOF.
