Reds Place Hunter Greene On 15-Day Injured List

By Leo Morgenstern | August 17, 2024 at 9:10pm CDT

9:10 pm: After tonight’s game, Reds manager David Bell said Greene’s MRI looked encouraging (per Goldsmith). While he added that it was too soon to offer a timeline for Greene’s return, the skipper seemed optimistic his ace could be back on the mound once his minimum 15-day stint on the IL is up.

7:51 pm: The Reds have placed All-Star starting pitcher Hunter Greene on the 15-day injured list with right elbow soreness, the team announced. The club did not make a corresponding move before tonight’s game against the Royals at Great American Ball Park.

Greene, 25, was utterly dominant in his last start, holding the Cardinals to four hits and one run over seven innings. He struck out eight and walked only one. However, he reportedly felt soreness in his elbow following the outing (per Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer). The pain temporarily went away, but it returned while he was playing catch today. President of baseball operations Nick Krall told Goldsmith that the IL stint is precautionary as of right now, and Greene will need an MRI before the team can decide on any next steps.

The young flamethrower underwent Tommy John surgery as a minor leaguer in 2018. While his elbow has remained healthy since then, Greene spent several weeks on the IL with a shoulder strain in 2022 and hip soreness in 2023. At long last, it seemed like 2024 would be the year he put everything together. His star potential has long been evident, but he was finally enjoying star-caliber results, with a 2.83 ERA through a career-high 143 1/3 innings pitched. Unfortunately, his excellent season has now been put on hold. It’s unclear how serious the issue might be, but it’s naturally worrisome when a hard-throwing pitcher with a history of UCL problems goes on the IL with elbow pain.

With Graham Ashcraft and Brandon Williamson on the 60-day IL, Cincinnati’s starting depth is already quite thin. Other starters on the 40-man roster include Connor Phillips and Lyon Richardson, but Phillips was sent to the Reds’ training complex in June amid tremendous struggles at Triple-A (10.11 ERA in 14 GS), while Richardson has recently been pitching out of the bullpen at Triple-A amid a difficult season of his own (4.58 ERA in 23 G).

Thus, the Reds will likely need to add a pitcher to the 40-man roster to start in Greene’s place on Monday. They already have an open spot to do so. Mark Sheldon of MLB.com names 23-year-old right-hander Julian Aguiar and 31-year-old right-hander Connor Overton as potential options, but he notes that the team is not planning to promote 22-year-old righty Rhett Lowder, one of the organization’s top prospects, from Double-A.

Reacquire Joey Votto right now to make the team relevant again for this year and competitive for next year.

    Do it now.

It was over when they failed to do anything at the deadline to improve.

Explains why the series with the Brewers and Royals are disappointing. Those teams did.

The brewers added a starter with an era north of five…. From the reds…. So………. Fact of the matter is the Crew are just far and away the best run organization in the NL central and it’s been that way for over a decade, the Crew add pitchers with ERA’s near five with other teams but with the crews defense playing behind them that number will drop nearly a run per game, it’s not just adding a guy here/there, it’s a “mindset” a way of doing things, the team probably would refer to it as “culture” but bottom line is not having even “reds money” (which I get in the grand scheme of baseball isn’t even much) has “galvanized” this organization and after decades of being tortured by teams that both did it right and have $$ the crew has made the changes needed from top to bottom and Murph is the most un-cherry “cherry on top” most brewers fans didn’t know we even needed, but his philosophical differences from his predecessor have been BIGLY noted and appears to be what’s taken this team/organization from being “good” to being one of the best teams in all of baseball with loads of young controllable talent/players, and after the years of somehow managing to Love Council as a player, then much more as a manager, well who would’ve known his greatest gift to the Brewers would’ve been leaving and tying up fifty mil$ worth of cubs cash ha, he’ll undoubtedly be helpful to the cubs organization in the long run but it sure has started out skewed heavily in favor of the crew, but bicker all day about moves here/signing this guy there, the brewers top two starters right now weren’t even considered major league caliber players going into last season, it’s about “culture” and not having some up your ass and around the corner fake one….. hit the slide Bernie!!

While he’s on the IL they need to figure out what’s causing those stomach issues. Watching a guy throw up into his glove and then use the same glove immediately after is gross

As a Cardinals fan I was having difficulty keeping my previous meal down watching them try to get it going against Greene. He was looking good and they are flat as a manhole cover. Although they hold a late lead tonight.

It seems like they are a team with an injury just waiting to happen. Hard throwing pitchers get injured more than most. That is why I preferred Condon with the draft choice. That and the Red’s dire need for hitters.

Sale was and is, most likely, the Cy Young winner in NL. If he continues apace, it would not have been Greene anyway.

It all comes down to three pitchers. Wheeler, Skenes, and Sale.

Greene was at least in the conversation. Kinda surprised the Pirates haven’t shut Skenes down yet but they should and if they do he’s out.

I suspect Skenes will be taken out of this by only being given another 25+/- innings on the year.

Would’ve been cool to see him being the most hyped pitcher since Strasburg and Valenzuela. Then again, both Strasburg’s and Valenzuela’s careers were sad to watch at the end.

He is the General Manager of this joke of an organization. From the way they communicate to fans, to the performance on the field. How is it his fault? He is in charge of this mess, thats how. His lack of articulation when speaking is pretty funny to me though, him and Bell speak their own marbled language.

    David Bell needs to go
Yes, they’ve had injuries, but that team has underperformed all year. 6th best RD in the NL, but still 3 under.

Been letting Greene consistently go 105-115 pitches per start, throwing 99 all the way thru. What did he think was going to eventually happen.

Can’t argue with any of that but it starts up top with the guy afraid to make the moves that move them from contention to a consistent winner.

I know the article’s not about him, but how is David Bell still managing that team……for the past 3 years?

Surely he knows more about major league baseball than I do,
but there must be some decent managerial candidates floating around. I’m assuming the salary isn’t up to par and maybe the organization isn’t regarded as the best to work for, but still ……

It’s sort of like ONeill Cruz butchering the SS position in Pittsburgh which constantly costs the Pirates games. My suspicion is that in booth cases it goes up the the owner. and even the head of Baseball Ops has little say.

Bring up Aguiar. Kid deserves it. Should have been up long ago versus having the stupid bullpen games to burn out the bullpen.

Hopefully he doesnt miss much time. He deserves the Cy Young probably. They will end up giving it to Sale because he’s never gotten one. Not that he’s undeserving.
