August 21: Ryan cleared waivers and was outrighted back to Triple-A Indianapolis, per the transaction log at MLB.com. It’s not clear whether he has elected free agency.
August 19: The Pirates announced a series of roster moves today, including the selection of outfielder Billy McKinney, which was previously reported. They also recalled right-hander Hunter Stratton. To make room for those two, the club placed third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes on the 10-day injured list with low back inflammation and designated righty Ryder Ryan for assignment.
It doesn’t come as a huge surprise that Hayes has landed on the IL with this back issue, as it’s been a recurring theme in his career so far. He landed on the shelf due to a back injury in 2022, twice in 2023 and now this is his second stint of the 2024 season. Yesterday, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wrote about how Hayes has a disc problem in his back that requires him to play through pain, with no obvious treatment apart from rest.
“Someone who has what I have, you want to stay away from turning,” Hayes said to Mackey. “But that’s what I have to do every day. It’s been frustrating, for sure, just knowing that I’m a lot better than what I’m showcasing. I want to be out there every day, but it’s just … hard.”
The third baseman then got more into the weeds in discussing his injury. “My whole issue is the disc has lost its jelly stuff,” Hayes said. “When we look at the MRIs, [the discs are] just kind of compressing. I don’t know that it’s rubbing, but it’s definitely a little collapsed to where there’s pressure, inflammation builds up, and muscles want to try to protect.”
The Pirates have hovered around the playoff race this year but have hit a bad skid lately, going 3-13 in their past 16 games. They are still within 7.5 games of a Wild Card spot in the National League but would have to leapfrog six different teams in order to get into playoff positions. The Playoff Odds at FanGraphs give them just a 0.5% chance of making the postseason now, while the PECOTA Standings at Baseball Prospectus are slightly lower at 0.4%.
Perhaps the Bucs have accepted that this isn’t their year and will now get Hayes some rest as opposed to pushing him to play through his injury. Whether he will come back or simply be shut down perhaps depends on how he feels in the coming weeks.
Though the back issue isn’t new, it’s possible it’s impacting him more than in previous years. He came into this season with a .264/.320/.409 batting line and 98 wRC+ as well as 65 Defensive Runs Saved and 51 Outs Above Average at third base. This year, he’s hitting .233/.283/.290 for a wRC+ of 60 and his defensive grades are down a bit, though still strong, at 9 DRS and 5 OAA.
Finding a solution will obviously be a priority for the Bucs, as they gave Hayes an eight-year, $70MM extension in 2022. That deal runs through 2029 and has a club option for 2030, a significant commitment for a low-spending club like the Pirates. With Hayes out of action, the Bucs will likely give more infield time to guys like Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Jared Triolo and Alika Williams, with that group also covering second base alongside shortstop Oneil Cruz.
Ryan, 29, signed a minor league deal with the Pirates in the offseason and has been on and off their roster this year. He made the Opening Day roster and spent the first half of the season as a frequently-optioned depth arm. As of 2022, players can only be optioned five times per season and the Pirates had already optioned Ryan five times by the middle of July. He was then designated for assignment at the end of July and accepted an outright assignment. He was added back to the roster a week ago but now gets the DFA treatment again.
Around those transactions, he has thrown 20 2/3 innings at the major league level with a 5.66 earned run average, combining an 18.3% strikeout rate with a 9.7% walk rate and 37.1% ground ball rate. He has also thrown 28 1/3 Triple-A innings with a 4.45 ERA, 16% strikeout rate, 8.4% walk rate and 50% ground ball rate.
With the trade deadline now passed, the Bucs will have to place him on waivers in the coming days. He has one more option year remaining but can no longer be optioned here in 2024. Since he passed through waivers a few weeks ago and accepted an outright assignment, it’s possible that the same sequence of events takes place in the next few days.

Ke’Bryan and the long ever growing saga behind the actual severity of his lower back injury. Just get surgery and be traded already
User 1286178995
His number one problem is between his ears. He’s a legend in his own mind and plays like he’d rather be somewhere else
TheMan 3
Yeah, SenorFigs, he’d rather be eating sunflower seeds at home instead of playing 3rd base
szielinski
You read his mind and know this AZ a fact?
TheMan 3
What exactly is AZ?
Abbreviation for Arizona
YourDreamGM
I never met anyone who’s bad back ever got better. Never met anyone who had back surgery that made them good as new. Hope it works out for Hayes though. But like I said when I first heard of his condition. Best case he plays alright in a limited role with plenty of rest. Worst case he retires early. Hope Nutting got the insurance on him. It’s expensive though so won’t be surprised to see payroll 7m less than it should be for the rest of the decade.
TheMan 3
I have had 2 surgeries on my back, both times to remove fragments that ruptured on #5 lumbar
Granted both happened first when I was 35, the second time when I was 54. After the second time, it made the structure weaker and more difficult to do basic things
Hayes is 27 and has had a recurring back problem for a few years now. If surgery is needed, he should get it done now instead of waiting like I did the first time.
I’m not his orthopedic doctor and his condition might not be as severe as mine were but he should still be very careful
YourDreamGM
No jelly sounds severe. Disc aren’t rubbing yet but that jelly is there for a reason. Sounds to me no jelly and Hayes is toast. Hope for some amazing medical technology.
TheMan 3
It wouldn’t surprise me if he’s out for the remainder of the season
bucsws2024
I’ve had back issues since I was 14 (football injury). That was 54 years ago. I never went through the rigors of preparation to play a professional sport, but managed to play a little in college and mostly wasn’t restricted as to what I could play as an adult (softball, golf, touch football, hoops, skiing, etc). But my situation is that the discs hardened after rupturing, so it’s more like having a thin hard rubber gasket between vertebrae than movable goo. Every decade or so I do get set back with some amazing pain, but I know the rehab exercises I need to do, and back stretching at a chiro (no manipulation, just decompression) gets me back in play fairly quickly. So it’s possible Hayes may end up the same way, which would allow him to mostly stay on the field. I also don’t know anyone who’s had back surgery and come out good as new, but I know a bunch who were even more debilitated from having it.
PiratesFan1981
@TheMan it might be for the best to have him sit out the rest of the year and seek some professional advice and several orthopedic doctors to get his back right. He’s still young and the healing process is a lot quicker. As he gets older, any major surgery takes months to years to heal. He’s locked up for another 4 years and 2 years off and still getting paid, won’t crush him financially.
I begin to wonder if he has the similar back issue that James Harness (from Gold Rush) had for years after a car accident. My wife is dealing with the exact same thing the late Mr. harness had. Also the same type of accident that Harness had. Watching her battle kills me and we have tried everything we could afford to try and relieve her pain. Time is running out and we are trying still. 8 years after her accident, there has been no luck so far and we are in our late 40s.
So, to see Hayes struggling does hit a soft spot for me. I would like to see him get some sort of surgery to ease his suffering. There is a surgery that will “insert jelly foam” in that specific area. It’s highly dangerous if not done properly obviously. At his age, he could be out of baseball action for 2 years while going through rehab. It’s an expensive procedure, but could add 10-20 years to his back without further damages.
TheMan 3
I’m empathetic to your wife’s agony, PiratesFan1981. From someone who can relate to the pain she’s enduring, it’s understandable that it’s important to determine a remedy as quickly as possible
I originally hurt my back when I was in the military but the injury didn’t manifest itself for surgery for years after. By ignoring the injury it made the rupture worse.
My orthopedic surgeon said that because I waited so long for the first surgery, it weakened the lumbar to the degree that he knew another surgery would probably be necessary
Back injuries should never be taken lightly
TheMan 3
Back surgeries are a damned if you do and damned if you don’t type of problems.
Baller4mlb
Thank you. I’ve been saying back surgery since the last time he was shelved. As someone who is young with sciatic nerve issues in my back.. these things are kind of life long

as if McKinney is any better than Hayes offensively,
mlb1225
Put it like this. McKinney’s career OPS+ in the Major Leagues is 82. Hayes has a 63 OPS+ this season. The difference between McKinney and Hayes is nearly the same difference as Adley Rutschman and league average.
User 1286178995
I’m probably mistaking the analogy you’re trying to make. Last I looked, Rutschman was hitting in the mid .260’s with 18 homers and 60 or 65 rbi. What’s your point again?
mlb1225
The difference between McKinney’s career OPS+ (82) and Hayes’ OPS+ this season (63) is 19 percentage points. The difference between the league average OPS+ (100) and Rutschman this year is 18 percentage points (he is at 118). The difference between Hayes this year and McKinney in his career is about the same as Rutschman this year and league average. TheMan said as if McKinney is any better than Hayes offensively, which right now, I’d say he is. That’s not to say McKinney is good, moreso to say how poorly of a season Hayes is having.
mlb1225
But don’t take that as a pro McKinney statement. McKinney is not who would want here right now, especially considering they optioned Palacios and have Yorke and Cook lighting up Triple-A pitching.
TheMan 3
When Andy Haines gets ahold of his swing, let’s see how well he can keep those stats you posted at their current level
Haines has ruined numerous players’ swings
TheMan 3
the analogy of league average when defending players is setting for mediocrity.
This team needs better than mediocrity, because most of their starting 9 already meets that criteria
personally, I am tired of mediocrity
mlb1225
I’m not defending anyone, just saying that Hayes has been so awful this year that McKinney is somehow a significant upgrade if we are comparing their offensive production, and just goes to show how bad Hayes has been.
lesterdnightfly
Well, why didn’t you just say that instead of conjuring some farfetched stats junk?
YourDreamGM
If you are average you are better than half the players in baseball. If everyone on your team was average you are a 500 team. I wish the Pirates could be average.
mlb1225
OPS+ is not some super new and advanced metric. It’s been around for a while and is simple to understand. If you don’t understand it, well I’m sorry if I confused you.
TheMan 3
Well, McKinney is in the lineup for tonight’s game playing right field
Let’s see how well he plays against major league pitchers
mlb1225
Asking him to hit like he did last year for the Yankees (.726 OPS, 100 wRC+) shouldn’t be a huge ask, but it is.
YourDreamGM
They haven’t accepted ops yet. Certainly not ready for ops+. Gotta know your audience bright eyes. Stick to the 3 legs of baseball. Average hr rbi. I will give them my Tom Selleck analytics sales pitch but they ain’t ready to buy in.
YourDreamGM
Most people thought the 3 legs of baseball data batting average, rbi, and era would be enough to get by but it’s kinda like this 3 legged stole I’m sitting on. Little wobbly! But I think I might have a solution. What many people don’t realize is that your biggest asset might very well be analytics and using analytics could play a vital part in improving your team. Analytics could add a 4th leg to your plan. Much better than a 3 legged stole. A analytics chair! 4 legs. More stable. Analytics. Bringing stability to your team.
YourDreamGM
Tom’s been doing those commercials for a long time. Why would they keep paying him if he doesn’t know how to get through to older Americans? So I just replaced “reverse mortgage” with “analytics”. My lil science project to see if I can get a break through.
User 1286178995
You’ve spent far too much time watching Tom’s commercials and memorizing them, albeit poorly
Your problem continues to be in the comprehension of old schoolers. And using your usual pretzel logic doesn’t help
There’s only one remedy to understanding
And of course, it’s dialing up Mr Baseball on demand. You have it. It’s there. Watch. Laugh. Take notes about baseball. And life
In many ways, YOU are Jack
You need a Uchiyama to demonstrate to both you and bright eyes that baseball isn’t played on stat sheets. He’ll even correct your swing
You need a Nakamura, an owner who won’t settle for excuses.
You need a Hiroko to teach you about life. And love
You need a Hiroko’s grandfather. Not sure why but you need him
You need a Niven. He has naked pictures of your wife
Only then will you find enlightenment, grasshopper
Mendoza Line 215
Dream- I have accepted OPS but what is OPS+?
Is that like an A+ for OPS?
OPS was not good enough for baseball nerds?
It is certainly simple enough for geezers to embrace. It also makes fairly good sense.
And how is that computer working out for Cherington?
YourDreamGM
You guys. The Brewers. The Giants. The White Sox need to embrace analytics. I’m the only one of the bunch that knew Bart Rowdy Grandpal were going to hit and Hill was going to pitch. Bright eyes better get on it too. He is using like 1st grade analytics.
YourDreamGM
It’s ops for idiots who can’t figure out a guy playing for Colorado or Boston has fake stats.
Mendoza Line 215
I think that that means field adjusted.
Does anyone use it for anything?
Does it make a real difference to OPS?
Do they assume that those parks do not affect walks or singles, and really just maybe home runs? For the smaller parks do they give less credit for home runs but more for triples?
Does anyone really know what time it is?
Does anyone really care?
Just sayin’.
I think that the acronym KISS applies here unless someone can get into the weeds with this and explain it in detail and whether the difference between OPS and OPS + really means anything..
Thanks for your answer.

Grandal 5hr 199 avg 584 ops2.8 k/w ratio

I think that the Pirates got what they paid for with both of them.
YourDreamGM
Yasmani Grandal has a .265 batting average with 13 hits, 3 home runs, 5 RBIs and 7 runs since July 5
Rowdy Tellez is batting .291 with 53 hits, 9 home runs, 34 RBIs and 21 runs since June 1
They’re hitting since I said they would. That’s all I care about. Grandpal was just unlucky. Tellez needed help and the Pirates couldn’t offer it.

And bednar blows another game….Chapman pitched 1 inning before bednar blew the game ..time for the Moron to make Chapman the closer and let him pich a 2 inning save….you can blame this losing after the all star break on THE MORON. And maybe bednar should be shut down .he’s either hurting or a head case or is fine as a closer
TheMan 3
I usually agree with everything you say, NewBuco, and while Bednar was the losing pitcher, the hitters lost this game before he took the mound
17 strikeouts, many with runners in scoring position is what’s responsible for the loss. The Pirates out hit the Rangers yesterday yet they couldn’t even get a hit when it mattered most
YourDreamGM
Seasons over. Let Bednar close and blow games. Champman only goes 1 inning at time. They knew this when they signed him.
TheMan 3
They should have included Woodford in the “ designated for assignment “ decision. He sucks and has no business being a starter in their rotation.
But the frugal owner would never agree with promoting another highly touted pitcher from Indy.
Profits before winning
it looks like we will be seeing more of Williams in the lineup now
( barf barf)
mlb1225
Woodford is only here until Jones is back, which after his last start, should be soon (he was topping 99-100 again in his recent rehab outing). They weren’t going to promote Chandler or Harrington (Ashcraft is on the IL and Burrows is still building up from Tommy John surgery) for a few weeks just to option them again once Jones is back unless they planned on running a six-man rotation.
holecamels35
This is the problem with BC. Moves with no urgency. Instead of trying someone with upside for even a spot start, he sticks with journeymen and proven mediocre commodities instead of shaking things up. And giving Jared Jones and awful long rehab while the team is languishing shows he’s all but given up on the season.
mlb1225
Two starts really isn’t that long of a rehab, especially considering he missed over a month. The Pirates don’t have anyone penciled in to start the third game of the series against the Rangers. That might be when Jones returns.
Mendoza Line 215
Hole-He will eventually suffer the same fate as Huntington who also was lethargic.
It just takes Nutting lots of time to realize it.
Mendoza Line 215
MLB-I think that they are just laying low with Jones to limit his inning so this year.
If BC thinks that the Pirates have a playoff chance at 0.6% he is a very poor mathematician.
mlb1225
They’ll let him reach 140-150 innings probably. If you shut him down now, his workload only goes down from last season.
Mendoza Line 215
My point was that the extended IL delay enabled them to limit his innings without shutting him down later on.
TheMan 3
If Hayes’ back issue was that bad, he wouldn’t have traveled to Texas and be standing up in the dugout
Before both of my surgeries, my back pain was so severe, the only position it didn’t hurt was laying down
Even with an inflammation of the lower back causes discomfort standing up
YourDreamGM
He just needs to rub some dirt on it. If he can stand in a dugout then he can swing a piece of wood as hard as he can.
TheMan 3
I am well aware of why Woodford is in the starting rotation, my question is why they didn’t give Burrows or Chandler a spot start in making their major league debut rather than this bum.
Jones will make one more start at Indy before returning and from listening to Cherington on his weekly radio show yesterday, he wants 2024 to be better than 2023
Starting Woodford, even for one game, isn’t the path to take if that’s truly his hope
mlb1225
Burrows probably isn’t going to get a Major League start because he’s working back from Tommy John surgery. He may make a bullpen appearance later on. Chandler just got to Triple-A. If Ashcraft was healthy, he probably would have been the one making the starts right now.
User 1286178995
Gee, TheMan3, I said as much three hours ago. I’m surprised there aren’t some analytics provided here
Mendoza Line 215
I was thinking that German deserved a start but instead of being a fireman Saturday he was a fire bug.
holecamels35
Hayes needs to either learn how to hit and manage his injuries or get surgery or something to fix it. The offensive production this season was pathetic. I’d gladly take last season where he had 50 extra base hits with elite D and they would be a steal. He dropped to 15 extra base hits, I dont even know how that’s possible. Can’t hit it out of the infield.
TheMan 3
A back injury could prevent him from making a lift when he swings his bat due to pain but if that was his problem, he should have been put on the IL long before today
And if that was the case, I partly blame Shelton for not knowing this
holecamels35
Right, Cutch was playing hurt but still helping the team, this version of Hayes is no help at all, and I get some players want to tough it out while others like Bryant and Rendon would rather pack it in, like you said, the coach and gm need to be communicating with him and figuring out what he needs to do.
Mendoza Line 215
Cutch May have played his last game for the Pirates.
Mendoza Line 215
I do not particularly like either Bryant nor Renton as they are both grossly overpaid but in deference to them I am not sure that many would play hurt for the teams that they are on.
YourDreamGM
I heard it waa just routine old baseball player who played too much. They could and should bring him back next year with much lesser work load. Cutch final farewell tour. Come see your hero one last time. A bobblehead for every Cutch milestone. Least a half dozen. Cutch themed drone show. Cutch shirts. Kids Cutch mini bat. Nutting would be a idiot not to bring him back.
YourDreamGM
I’m a capitalist so love their pay. And if every team is going to spend more than the Pirates lets give them some dead weight. If other teams ever get to maximum intelligence then there is zero reason to be a fan of a small market team.
Mendoza Line 215
Except they may need DH for Cruz if he won’t play first base and if they are smart enough to move him off SS.
If they get a true DH in trade Cutch is superfluous.
He cannot play the field and will be on the IL much of the time.
He is still a decent player but the Pirates have to think outside of the box to get any better,
I am also suspect of his clubhouse influence with the number of non hustlers on this team because Shelton and BC are obviously not assertive enough to stop it.
Mendoza Line 215
I am more of a pragmatist who thinks that people should earn their paycheck since someone else is helping to pay for it.
TheMan 3
Shelton is partially responsible for Cutch’s sustained injuries. He plays him almost every game, on occasion he’s rested, but Cutch has been the primary DH all season
It’s another example of management not seeing ahead or ignoring the potential for injury. Hayes is another example. He hasn’t had the lift in his swing for quite awhile. Management didn’t take serious notice or they did and failed to see the potential of injury?
YourDreamGM
If teams are dumb enough to sign these guys they get what they deserve. Everyone laughed at them when they gave out those contracts. If fans know and teams don’t yikes.
YourDreamGM
Cruz will play wherever you tell him to or he rides the bench and hits free agency at age 30 having not played baseball in 4 years. They seem to believe he is still a ss.
Optimistic to even think they will trade for someone who’s so good they could kick Cutch out and be DH only. I expect more 1 year guys no one else wants. What DH will be traded? Rooker? Pirates will gladly play him in outfield or try to make him a 1b. He can’t be worse than Cruz Olivares.
YourDreamGM
If he ever rests Cutch many fans criticize him for not being in the lineup. Then they criticize him for not using him as a pinch hitter. Even if they are losing 8 to nothing. Then they criticize him for playing him too much. Shelton just can’t win.
TheMan 3
Shelton can’t win because he’s a loser as a manager
He keeps trotting out Taylor as he did in tonight’s lineup knowing that if the outfielder will more than likely strikeout at least twice and go hit less
He’s a loser because he supports the worst hitting coach in baseball
He’s a loser because his team has lost 12 of their last 14 games and have been out scored 28-11 in those 14 games
And he’s a loser because after being just one game out of the last playoff spot, his team is now 8 games out
Black_Pearl
He’s also a loser because he himself has a background as a hitting coach, yet his team strikes out at an alarming rate and can’t score runs.
User 1458589769
Yea and you are as arrogant as small hands
TheMan 3
This team as a whole struck out 1443 times last year. That is an average of almost 9 per game over an entire season
They have 35 games left in this season and could easily surpass last year’s total yet these stats don’t seem to matter to management, including coaches and the General Manager
If they did, heads would have already rolled

Mickeythemute said Hayes should be DFA, not with his contract. And the statement you made is worthy of a mute
PuttPutt⁰³
Hayes has been ABYSMAL offensively.
I’m sure part of it is his back, however, he can’t hit, especially for any power.
Truly embarrassing.
IsIt2025Already?
Worst qualified hitter against RHP in all of MLB.
Monkey’s Uncle
If the Pirates had more than 2 or 3 bona fide good hitters, carrying Hayes and his Gold Glove caliber defense would be worth it.
They don’t, and it isn’t.
Samuel
Monkey’s Uncle;
Yes!
The problem is that the 2 least important defensive positions on a major league team are LF and 3B. It’s great to get elite defense in those positions, but the guy has to hit some.
C and SS are the 2 most important defensive positions. Some teams will carry a poor hitting C as he runs a game and works with the pitchers. But even elite defensive SS’s have problem getting a roster spot on a ML team.
Hayes hit decently in 2023. If healthy and hitting at his 2023 level, he can be a decent player on a contending team batting in the lower 1/3’rd of the order. However, even then I’d suggest that Mr. Hayes has little trade value.
It’s all relative: The problem with the Pirates is that they’ve had so few decent players coming through this rebuild that management celebrates Hayes and a few others because they’re the better ones.
User 1286178995
They erred greatly where Hayes was concerned. They were eager to push the idea of the rebuild bearing fruit but greatly misjudged this kid. One would have thought they learned their lesson by doing the same thing with Gregory Polanco but to me, this was as bad if not worse. Fringe player. Nothing more. Even before his back issues, there was nothing that would have had you believing he was a big time hitter with some pop
But perhaps the Pirates have learned something. No word of them trying to sign Cruz long term.
TheMan 3
I think because of recent Keller pitching meltdowns and Hayes’ recurring back problems, Nutting might be reluctant to agree to any long term contracts to anyone right now
And with Cruz’ errand arm, he might not be convinced that giving him one is the right move
mlb1225
There were definitely signs of life in Hayes’ bat before 2023. He had an average exit velocity over 90 MPH in both 2021 and 2022, which is well above average. He never struck out at a high rate and would walk at a solid clip. The issue was always lifting the ball. He learned how to do that last year. Iirc, his launch angle in 21-22 was below 5 degrees and last year it was around 12-15 degrees. He hit for a lot of power last summer once he started to go more to his pull side. This year, he’s done neither. He’s not lifting the ball, nor has the raw power been there. His exit velo is somewhere around 88 MPH. A lot of that is probably to do with his herniated disc.
TheMan 3
Each time Cruz strikes out looking as he did in his first AB in tonight’s game, it might give Nutting pause for giving him a long term contract
It’s worth repeating, striking out while looking is an unacceptable way to make an out and this team does it often
Mendoza Line 215
And a lot of that had to do with Joe Nunnaly being fired by the genius GM.
Mendoza Line 215
It is not.The Pirates needed a shortstop in the worst way,and Cruz is a shortstop in the worst way.
mlb1225
Maybe, but I’m willing to put more blame on playing through a herniated disc for most of this year. Back injuries can really sap a player’s power until they are fully healed, if they ever do fully heal. Hayes can have the best hitting coach in the universe, but it won’t help if he’s tweaking his bat everytime he swings.
TheMan 3
Triolo just imitated Cruz, striking out looking
Does anyone teach these players how to protect the plate?
It’s mind boggling
TheMan 3
I completely agree, MLB1225, but Hayes had been struggling for quite awhile before today’s decision
If management couldn’t see that he was struggling to lift his swing, what were they looking at? We, the fans saw it. I have heard announcers say it
What took so long? Was Shelton hoping his injury would heal itself?
User 1286178995
Complete baloney. Your defense of the guy is admirable, your numbers are meaningless. From the time he was signed, I kept looking for a reason beyond his glove. Flashes. That’s all he’s shown
Last year, his dad put it out there that his kid didn’t want to play here. He later walked that back. But the kid sure makes it look like this just isn’t his gig
That you want to attribute all of his problems to his back is predictable, and laughable.
Fringe player. Glove only. Me-first attitude
I don’t need launch angle numbers to see a guy who is aloof at all times
TheMan 3
Rowdy righted his swing approach by using the advice of a former scout who he had met years ago and recall last year Cruz hired his own hitting coach
Something is seriously amiss when players go outside the organization to find others to help with their hitting woes
Yet the rubes like Shelton claim to believe in Haines
Samuel
Actually, Mendoza Line 215;
They let Kevin Newman go in free agency. At the salary he was being paid he was a descent ML SS. We could add that for all of Cruz’s batting prowess [sic], Newman helped the team more.
–
Newman went onto the Reds to be a utility guy. He was replaced this year by a group of highly regarded youngsters that have been so bad that the team just claimed Amed Rosario for the last 6 weeks of the season (what’s with that?).
Then the D-Backs signed him as a utility guy. He’s been great helping them in playoff contention this year.
–
When he was a FA I wrote here that the Braves (who’d let Dansby Swanson go to be paid a fortune by the Cubs) would do well to sign Newman for a reasonable contract. That got responses from Braves fans on how he was not fit to be a SS for the Braves. Well, he’s done far better with the Reds and D-Backs then the Braves SS’s have since – who those posters now complain about.
–
Newman was a solid ML SS with the Pirates. He’s a smart player (a prerequisite to playing decent SS at any level). It’s a defensive position, the 2nd most important on a team. The Pirates should have kept him. His salary requirements were not that high. Having a solid SS in the middle of your defense helps stabilize a team – especially with so many young players.

The numbers aren’t meaningless. Hitting the ball hard and in the air is good. Hitting the ba hard but into the ground isn’t. The numbers just quantify that. Sure, the guy never projected as a 30 home run hitter, but the potential was clearly there to be like a .280 hitter with 15 homers with a lot of doubles. Back problems can be career killers. It completly affects the way you swing and how much power your swing has depending on the severity. It could very well easily be the primary reason why he is struggling so badly. And we’re not just talking about a slight tweak. It’s a herniated disc. That can lead to chronic pain for the rest of his life.
I also don’t think it’s fair to call him aloof. I’ve heard him talk and seen him play, and the last thing I’d call him is selfish.
User 1286178995
Watched him with the D-Backs over the weekend and you’re right. Upgrade to what they have now. The Pirates opted for the shiny new toy that has a few mechanical problems over the reliable model that fielded and was a decent hitter
Welcome to Pirates baseball
That reports continue to document Cruz’s unwillingness to move off of short is a disturbing facet of all of this. They have better shortstops on the farm but they’ll never smell the position
User 1286178995
Disagree completely with your assertions
Hayes has rarely showed pop, on the ground or in the air.
Maybe he needs to walk the walk to impress fans. Doesn’t matter what he says, it’s his act on the field that gives the perception
He may be a great guy, volunteer at Children’s, hold Easter egg hunts. But dear God, show some fire. Show some passion
But analytics guys who love launch angles don’t understand that, I guess
mlb1225
He had a 90.7 MPH exit velo in 2021-2022, which is well above average. But his ground ball rate in those years was 52.4%. Whether or not the results were there is a different story. I think Hayes plays with a lot of fire and clearly cares, even if he doesn’t explicitly show it. I don’t hear people talk the same about Bryan Reynolds, who is a pretty quite and reserved guy.
The_Fan_27
Alright, to call Kevin Newman a decent hitter is comical. Last three years he was in Pittsburgh he batted .240/.283/.323. Then he batted .253/.311/.364 with the Reds before being cut. I’m glad he’s doing better this season, but he has yet to put up an OPS over .700 since 2019. If you’re willing to take Newman over Cruz on the basis of errors and batting average, you’re going to lose a lot more games than if you had Cruz.
User 1286178995
Yeah. I got a little carried away and then checked stats.
User 1286178995
If it was raining out, you’d produce meaningless numbers to tell me what I see is wrong. It’s a constant theme with you
As for attitude and on field persona, it’s hilarious you bring up Reynolds. The guy seems to go full blast every time. His demeanor may be quiet but you can’t question effort. Not a clubhouse leader on a team that sorely needs one but plays hard
Ridiculous. Just ridiculous
When you write, I’m reminded of Roy Hobbs asking Max Mercy, “Did you ever play the game, Max?”

mlb1225;
I think Bryan Reynolds is one of the most overrated players in MLB. He built a rep being the only decent player on the Pirates and playing CF. But people that watched saw he wasn’t a particularly good defensive CF, he covered some ground but his throwing was weak and inaccurate.
A few years ago I was arguing with you that Reynolds belonged in LF. Now he’s there and hits decently, but is sort of like an Andrew Benintendi in his good years…but not as good. I watched a lot of the Pirates-Padres 2 series recently. Reynolds still has the weak arm and still throws inaccurately. There was a quintessential play in which he overthrew the SS that came out for a cutoff throw in front of 3B which a Padre was running to. The reason for the overthrow was that Reynolds can’t throw on a line, so he throws up in the air (which takes more time to get to where it’s going). But not only did the ball go over the cutoff mans head, it also went over the 3B’s head that was standing on the bag. I believe the Pitcher backed up the play which stopped the runner from scoring (in football a weak armed QB that has to throw the ball high in the air usually washes out as defenders can catch up to the pass as it comes down). I saw Reynolds doing this 2 years ago, he obviously hasn’t improved.
Your statistics sound impressive. I don’t know if you played sports. But strongly suggest you read up on playing fundamental baseball, then watch a lot of Pirates games.
mlb1225
I’ve been working as a scout now for 2 years. I can tell you that Hayes had shown off the raw power in 2021 and 2022. My eyes could tell me that, and so did the metrics. I never once deined that he hit poorly in 2021 or 2022. He did and your eyes are right on that part. But your eyes aren’t going to easily be able to tell what a ground ball with 95 MPH exit velocity and an 90 MPH exit velocity are. That’s all I am saying. Raw power is not in-game power. Hitting the ball hard is part of the process, hitting the ball in the air is another part of the process. Hayes in 21-22 was doing half of that.
User 1286178995
Reynolds was never the second coming of Bonds, but he’s really the only hitter in the lineup a good pitcher worries about, other than Cutch, even at this stage
This is the age old debate between old school baseball people against the analytics crowd. To them, everyone is an all star and they have the data to “prove it”
mlb1225
In my life, I wanted to play more baseball when I was young. But I was given a choice: either baseball or play golf. I chose golf. Why? My grandpa’s health was in decline, and as much as I wanted to play baseball, I wanted to golf with him for whatever years I had left because playing with him before his health was too poor to go out on the links was more important than playing baseball. But I never gave up my love or focus for baseball. Not playing does not mean I don’t understand the game. I understand the fundamentals. Probably every player today will tell you the importance of analytics. Analytics will tell you about the process. The numbers you are looking at only tell the results. I never once said Hayes is some monster power hitter. All I said was that he hits the ball hard and provided the evidence that shows he is hitting the ball hard.
If you don’t like what I have to say, then that’s that. I understand if you don’t want to take the time to try and understand something as simple as exit velocity or OPS+, or their importance. I just don’t understand why some people are so close-minded about the importance of some of these statistics when they’re as basic as how hard you hit the ball and how good you are compared to the rest of the league, which is all exit velo and OPS+ are, or antagonize those who look at stats like that.

OK….
Did you know that this year in MLB the average batting line is: .244 / .313 / .401 / .714?
Did you know that a .244 BA vs. say a .275 BA for a full-time player averages out to less than one (1) more hit a week? And that the corresponding averages are similar.
Do you think that a SS that butchers plays multiple times a week that causes momentum changes for his team has to hit well over .300 with corresponding power numbers to offset the damage he’s doing on D? To his pitching staff that has to throw more pitches to make up for his mistakes and then gets out of the game faster?
SS is a defensive position. I’ll take a sure-handed player that knows when to eat the ball instead of throw it wildly to a base to show off his arm, thereby costing the team.
The fact that you don’t get this perspective is understandable. You’re a poster on an Internet chatroom board. The fact that a MLB organization doesn’t get it dooms them to second division finishes.

If that’s how you’re scouting, Fine.
Before there were computers, businesses used to use “Efficiency Experts” (believe that went back to the original Rockefeller). They would tell business supervisors which hand the worker on the assembly line should use to pick up an item, how long it should take to add their part, and how many steps to walk over to put item down back on he assembly line (Charlie Chaplain parodied that in a sequence in one of his movies…I forget which).
There are 2 ways economists and investors use to measure what they follow: 1) Macro / Fundamental and 2) Technical.
Although Branch Rickey was using stats going back to 1915 in baseball (he believed in OPS over BA), he was an outlier. Pro sports had the first (Macro) from their inception until the late 1960’s / early 1970’s. Only then was technical added. I find those things interesting. But I don’t think they’re a Bible as many younger people do and have done for 40 years now. And many MLB FO’s swear by them – like the SF Giants. Proof is that they work to a point. Once someone finds a pattern and it becomes popular, it fails. (Or as Joe Granville the father of modern Stock Market analysis put it: “When I find the key to the market, they change all the locks”.)
For a long time now players play for their stats. After all, it’s what their agents need to negotiate their contracts and maybe go to arbitration to argue for their salaries. My issue is this:
That has little to do with a team winning or losing. If it did, pre-season predictions for both individual players and teams wouldn’t be so far off. Too many variables that change too fast.
–
“”Analytics will tell you about the process. The numbers you are looking at only tell the results.”
–
What your post brought back to me was the “Lucky/Unlucky” argument the analytic people use to justify their being wrong. That argument to me is a built-in excuse for the people making their living with the analytics – because what happened didn’t happen as the variables in my algorithm said it should, said player / team was “Lucky” / “Unlucky”. Same for FO’s justifying the techniques their coaches are demanding their player use.

I enjoy watching baseball games.

If his back was fine it was a fine contract. Elite defense and average bat is well worth 7m a year. Any back issues before the contract? Maybe they insured the contract and didn’t care or took the gamble. Maybe a reporter will do some reporting. We can’t even find out how long and how much Shelton Cherington are signed for. This wouldn’t fly in many cities. Pittsburgh and Tampa can basically do anything and get away with it.
YourDreamGM
Doesn’t have the $ to give out any ot many more contracts. Never spent more than 100m. No small market ever spent more than 130m. Arbitration is going to eat up all his payroll. Skenes makes $ though so I am sure they could find room for him. If he wants to stay here. He seems smart so if you pay him enough he will want to be here. Good news is there isn’t many guys you would want to extend. Or maybe that’s bad news?
YourDreamGM
And they fired the coach responsible for getting him to do it.
YourDreamGM
Maybe Haines is fantastic and it’s just the entire team other than Reynolds and Bart have bad backs?
YourDreamGM
Actually they traded Newman for a young reliever with a nasty slider. Won that trade easily. Literally a must do trade. They could have signed Newman for Nutting over the winter though.
YourDreamGM
Reynolds is a good outfielder. He has enough data and it clearly shows it. No one cares about his arm. It’s by far the least valuable tool. No one other than maybe mlb if true thought he was a good defensive cf. No one thought Reynolds was elite. Not even Reynolds.
TheMan 3
A herniated disc does not heal naturally, it requires surgery so if this is Hayes’ diagnosis, the longer he waits for surgery, the worse his back problems will become in the future
TheMan 3
If Hayes had a herniated disc, he wouldn’t even be able to walk without severe pain
User 1286178995
First off, I wouldn’t wish injury on anyone. I don’t doubt Hayes has back problems. I’ve never had long periods with such a problem but know how debilitating it can be
I’ve read the ridiculous analytical defense here and am done addressing it.
I’ll take issue with your thought about “average bat,” however. Might as well sign Alika Williams to a similar contract. Just as good a glove, actually a better defensive SS than Cruz will ever be, and I’d reckon that he can hit over .230 over the same amount of at bats. Says a great deal about the money MLB is awash in
I’ll make a prediction that if Hayes can get his back healthy and one day lands on a contending team in a big market, he’ll magically become a .300 hitter
User 1286178995
So his firing precluded him from hiring his own batting instructor. Muy bueno. Yes, makes a great deal of sense
Hitting is like anything else. Those who put the work in usually succeed. Anyone read some of Ted Williams’ comments from back in the day? How about Tony Gwynn?
TheMan 3
This is not in defense of Haines, as most people who have read my comments about him are never favorable, but I read this morning that Triolo who has hit 2 homers in his last three games attributes this power from making adjustments in his swing in a recommendation from Haines
Giving this the benefit of the doubt, why did it take 120+ games for Haines to make this recommendation?
YourDreamGM
Did they just find their excuse to bring Haines back for 2025?
Mendoza Line 215
Samuel-Newman was let go for a number of reasons but I was not necessarily for it but saw the reasons.
He has no power and other than 2019 when you and I could have hit 300 he has never hit for a good average either.
He is one of these guys who will never start on even a decent team but will able to be a useful utility player on even a good team.
He was starting to make a decent salary and that is one reason that they traded him.
They got a good young reliever in Moreta who they could have used this year but has been on the 60 day IL the whole year.
They got a rash of young infielders who also play the positions.
I do not think that they wanted a previous starter to interfere with Cruz’”emotional” growth.
Inasmuch as Mioreta could have real value I do not think that it was a bad move. But I do agree with everything that you say except for the trade correction.
And we both have agreed for several years on Cruz.He has been coddled way too much and although a very talented player in many ways will never reach his potential batting value with the Pirates and with anyone else unless he learns many of the things that we take for granted with Newman.
TheMan 3
I question everything related to Haines, especially given the fact that the players are basically split on his coaching techniques and how management fails to see the division he’s created
Mendoza Line 215
Fan- I understand your point about Newman vs Cruz and in some respects it is well taken.Cruz is way more talented. But I think that you are missing a very important fact which cannot be summarized by the cacophony of numerous baseball stats that baseball nerds use to rule the universe.
Cruz makes a lot of errors. He makes a lot of dumb plays. He makes a lot of mental mistakes that are not noted as errors in any box score.
They are debilitating to a pitcher’s and a team’s morale.
How does one create a stat for that.
If a tree falls in the forest but no one hears it I can assure you that there is still a sound occurring from the fall.
Newman,on the other hand,is exactly the opposite.
I look at previous Pirates teams for comparisons. And the great MLB teams were always strong up the middle because that is where the vast majority of plays occur.
Jordy Mercer was a fine shortstop for the Pirates when they were actually a very good team.He was consistently around 25 out of 30 starting ML shortstops. But I liked him because he was more like Newman in never making stupid plays and mental or physical errors.
Cruz has to be moved but Cherington is too stupid to do it.
And I have come to the conclusion that BC needs to go too because he is blind to many of the real changes that the Pirates need to make.
And none of them can be attributed to Nutting.
Mendoza Line 215
Newman was a good player but they did not need him if Cruz was going to be the starter.
They are totally different players.
You and I agree that Cruz is not a shortstop.and I say that he should be moved to first base.
Newman is a starter on a mediocre team and a reserve on a good team.He is a fundamentally sound player without a lot of talent.
The Pirates got Moreta for him who is a talented reliever who hopefully will come back next year fully healthy.
Mendoza Line 215
The Pirates will never be a good team with Shelton managing,Haines the hitting coach,Cruz playing shortstop, and their development system being incapable of developing hitters.

I own up to being a shrill for the Pirates latest rebuilding try under Carrington for a few years. But I did a 180 a bit over a year ago when I saw how badly they were playing baseball on the field. (The O’s stunk for years during their rebuild, but the players always hustled and played fundamental baseball as best they could for Brendon Hyde.) Shelton is from the Shapiro tree, not exactly the most productive proving ground for young FO, managerial, and coaching people in MLB.
–
I credited Carrington a lot for the young players he brought into the farm system (working for Shapiro) with the Blue Jays. But in retrospect the better young players were brought in during the Alex Anthopoulos era.
Then I was thinking that Carrington has to go with Cruz at SS because the owner wants to patronize Pirates fans that are hungry for a star player (which he’s not and will never be). Now I’m not even sure about that.
–
As for Carrington and Shelton, look into “Principle, The Peter” – where over the years a bureaucrat is promoted to his/her level of incompetence.
User 1286178995
Their continual effort to find poster material to placate casual fans is tiring
Hayes was signed as “the cornerstone”
Then it was Bednar, the local boy
For a while, it was Suwinski
And with Cruz, they will talk incessantly about exit velocities from Friday when two games later, he’s 0 for 8 with 4 strikeouts.
Dream constantly says the rebuild is over. That’s true.
But it’s like the shiny car that leaks oil in three places and has an array of other problems
Where they go now, with no cavalry coming over the hill via the minors, is anyone’s guess
I’m thinking they’re resigned to sticking with what they have, closing their eyes, clicking their heels together three times and wishing for some kind of magic to take place
On an owner-deemed shoestring budget, what else can they do?

Losing as many games possible is what’s best for this team now. They definitely need the high draft pick and Nutting needs a wake up call. Cherington needs fired. Will be lucky if they fire Haines. But Shelton and Cherington need to go to. Travis can go as well. He hired Cherington. He didn’t fire anyone for not firing Haines. You don’t need to have a baseball background to know it’s not good when everyone who fixed your hitters weren’t Pirates employees. Fire everyone Mr Nutting. Maybe third times a charm.
TheMan 3
Yes, they need to lose as many games as possible ( which they would have anyway) to get a higher draft pick in next year’s amateur draft class ( which unless it’s the #1 automatic superstar in the mold of Paul Skenes), their current player development system will probably destroy his potential
Otherwise I do agree, Nutting needs to proverbially clean house and fire everyone from Travis Williams down to the bullpen coach and everyone in between and this includes scouts.
YourDreamGM
If it’s a pitcher they have a chance. Used to be they had to draft them 1 or 2 to succeed. Cole Taillon Skenes. But if they take someone with 1st round talent they have a chance. Jones Keller Bubba.
Maybe new management can improve development? If you keep firing and hiring eventually you will luck into someone who knows what they are doing. Higher you draft the better the talent pool and more $. Higher is better.
TheMan 3
Another concern if Cherington remains on in his position, the likelihood of any of those pitchers you mentioned being traded for a position player who is major league ready, Dream.
His previous acquisitions of position players haven’t exactly turned this offense around. Granted he sent lower class prospects away, what happens if the next trade involves a top pitching prospect and the return is yet another dud?
They need new leadership and it starts at the top
YourDreamGM
You would hope Nutting cared enough to have a untouchable list without his approval and he wouldn’t approve it.
Any impact bat they get should have to come from their development or not cost Jones or Bubba.
User 1286178995
I actually don’t believe Nutting has anything to do with the baseball side at all beyond dollar figures. I think his understanding of the game is rudimentary at best and that financial bottom lines are how he judges wins and losses
I’m betting he gives Williams a ledger with budgets and that it’s passed down to Cherington. For his part as GM, it provides a blueprint as to how he conducts business.
To me, Cutch calling Nutting to request ending his career here was an outlier. I don’t believe Nutting has anything to do with baseball ops other than offering tired, old sound bytes a couple times a year
TheMan 3
and counting the profits at each season conclusion
User 1286178995
If only Nutting could fire himself. Let’s face it, he’s the biggest problem here
Dream talks about the budget for a small market team. Within this thinking, you have GMs that must form a strategy
I get it. This is one area. Cherington has failed in. Signing guys who are duds
Mendoza Line 215
You are making a definitive statement that cannot be backed off from.
Unfortunately,I had hoped that Cherington could be saved. He does make good scouting and drafting decisions, and like NH,his trades have often been good.
Almost all of the time I think that his moves on and off the ML roster have been timely and have made sense.
But he has way too many blind spots with his personnel.
I think that Ben would certainly benefit from having a real baseball man over him who could highlight these weaknesses and force him to take action.Sometimes that can be from a hands on owner who actually cares about winning and is knowledgeable about baseball.Or one who is smart enough to pay for a high level executive.
The Pirates’ owner is none of these.
The charm was the first time but it only lasted for three years.
This time it lasted for three months.
YourDreamGM
If Cherington had just fired Haines I would be fine with giving him another year. Fact is though they tried to contend in 2023 and 2024 and failed. Did Cherington not provide enough talent or was the talent poorly coached and managed? Shelton and Haines are still here so Cherington obviously believes they didn’t have enough talent. He even said it’s mostly his fault Sunday. 5 losing seasons. 2 they actually signed free agents and tried to win. Best position players all Huntington guys. Team will be lucky to finish 500. Not a good team. Sold at every deadline but this one and farm system is as strong as teams who been contending for a long time, buying every year and drafting late. Cherington has had a top 10 pick every year. Extra draft pick every year. The most $ to spend internationally. Development has been awful.
Good news is everything Cherington is good even great at is the easiest thing to do. Scary some teams mess it up but good odds of finding someone as good.Still risk though. I’d like to keep him but guy just can’t read the room.
I would be ok with a gm who made fair trades and lost some by a bit if they had player development. You can trade prospects when you can simply develop more.
User 1286178995
I’m not sure how a farm system that’s ranked 27th is one of the best, but ok. The proof that keeps on showing up is that the Pirates still have yet to produce an impact player from their minors
Poor scouting. Poorer development. A great deal of propaganda
TheMan 3
Just now on the Fan, Shelton is being interviewed and the question of player discipline is raised regarding players not hustling
Shelton tried to sidestep the question then said that he has issued disciplinary actions as a manager before
Really? When?
Mendoza Line 215
Paul-They should have asked him if his disciplinary actions ever worked.
The only times that I am aware is for Hayes who was not allowed to have sunflower seeds on the field and Castro who had to give up his cell phone.
TheMan 3
I think it was Joe Starkey asking the questions to Shelton and one thing that really stood out to me is the way Shelton talked around the subject like he has perfected during post game interviews.
The example provided by Starkey was in regards to a player on the Yankees who hadn’t run out a grounder and was benched for the rest of the game
That’s when Derek said he had done that before to one of his players and I thought to myself “ when and who”?
Starkey mentioned those recent times when Cruz didn’t run out the grounders and that’s when Derek again sidestepped the subject and quickly changed it
Mendoza Line 215
Paul- Then again he may have orders from BC to treat Cruz with kid gloves,
We do not really know how much BC gets involved in discipline and daily activities,
It probably would have been spelled out when Shelton was hired.
User 1286178995
I put this forward some time ago. I do believe a great deal of what Shelton does follows the script set before him from above.
But when you don’t hold players accountable, it’s a problem that spreads quickly. This is the number one problem Shelton has created. Whether it was by design or just his style, what do we expect from a team whose focus is elsewhere?
Mendoza Line 215
Cruz did not run out of the batter’s box when he hit his triple today. He watched the flight of the ball ala his hero Rowdy Tellez.
Every time this happens he should be pulled the next inning for Williams.
He would be made to practice against Bae to see who could outrun each other to first base.
He would be made to practice running to first base without looking at where the ball is going.
He would quickly get the message if these knuckleheads knew what they were doing.
TheMan 3
Tellez didn’t turn on the gas until he realized that Garcia misplayed his hit then almost got thrown out at second base trying for a double.
Only a few Pirates hitters hustle when running out the the batters box
Not hustling was a question posed to Shelton during his Tuesday weekly interview on 93.7! Fan and in usual Derek fashion, and as I mentioned in another post here, he tried his best to dodge the question
There’s zero discipline or proper coaching on this team and it all starts with the manager
User 1286178995
Any manager worth his salt from little league through the farm system knows allowing this type of behavior is contagious. You just can’t allow it, period. All you get is complacency, if that
I get that these guys think they’re Soto and emulate his behaviors. But they’re not in the same hemisphere and Soto doesn’t dog it
Cruz. Tellez. Hayes. Grandal and his lobs back to the pitcher. The behavior here for a .500 team and guys batting .250 at best is not only appalling, it’s sickening
For THIS reason alone, Shelton should be shown the door. But again, I get the feeling if kid gloves approach comes from the GM who again, has been an abject failure
Jogging. Admiring fly balls. Sunflower seeds. Cell phones. General apathy about losing….these guys would be sitting the bench and running laps after games and practices on my high school team for weeks

Hmmm sidestepping questions….seems The Moron is taking lessons from politicians. Signing Hayes is one big mistake…when they signed him it was a major step forward for the franchise. My question is did Hayes hide his bad back? Or did the pirates know and just swept it under the rug…to make it look like a great move to win over fans.
I’m hoping Hayes can get his back in shape…if he does he could overcome his batting problems. Like the torrid pace he was on in the second half of last year
Like Dandy Don used to say, “turn out the lights, the parties over”.

Yea buddy…had some problems logging into MLb rumors. I dunno what was happening. But I said screw it, new name. I wonder if Mickey the muck will realize it and mute me.
Great to see Keller back on track last night. The last two starts were duds. But he’s a quality pitcher. To me, he’s a throwback to the pitchers of the 60s and 70s. I’m willing to bet that he could go 9 every start. He doesn’t seem to be injured.
User 1286178995
I’m going to say it again about Hayes, bucco
I can sympathize about his back issues. I hope they get him healthy soon
But his problem as long as he’s been here has been between his ears. The guy was always going to be a solid glove/little pop or hit type
You can tell me you’ve heard him talk, that he resonates passion and fire. You can quote launch angle numbers and assorted analytical gobblety gook that’s meaningless until you’re blue in the face. I just haven’t seen this “cornerstone” piece of the franchise that the GM described

The GM reminds me of Mike Tomlin. Both have the talent to accentuate their visions of success and convincing and when it’s apparent that their vision was wrong, they still convince the rubes that they are correct
PT Barnum must have had the Pirates in mind when he coined this most famous phrase about there being a sucker born every minute
By the way, 6 innings and now they’ve struck out 10 times
Another double digit performance by this lackluster offense . Andy Haines must be proud
Make it 11 strikeouts in 6 innings

Then the question was asked of why players like Cook and Yorke weren’t promoted instead of McKinney yesterday and in typical Shelton fashion of lying, he said that McKinney was a better fit
It’s absolutely ridiculous that this franchise makes decisions that are based on nonsense
Mendoza Line 215
EIther Cook or Yorke or both will be brought up soon or during September.
I do not get too excited about 60 at bats in AAA.
They are suspects until they perform in the ML’s.
And McKinney could be a better version of Palacios.
But if he is he will go the way of Andujar anyway.
The Pirates are starting to accumulate players who can be DFA’d so there will soon be room on the 40 and 25 man rosters for these players.
And Rowdy should be the first one to go as he has returned to his April and May ways.
Hasta la vista Rowdy.
TheMan 3
There’s room now for those players to be brought up to replace those destined for dfa
The season is over for any thought of making the playoffs, why wait?
Let’s see what these youngsters can do at the ML level with 38 games or so left instead of 20 games left
YourDreamGM
If you wait another week or two they can be eligible to win ROY and get us a 1st round draft pick!!!!!!!!!!!!
YourDreamGM
Soon it will be the time of year fans worrying about protecting all are stud prospects from rule 5. No time in my life have I ever seen them not have enough 40 man spots.
YourDreamGM
Hard to dfa non tender Joe when you have him as your clean up hitter. They must think he’s a All Star!!!!!! Hall of Famer!!!! Bright eyes working for the Buccos?
TheMan 3
I know, Dream, Joe will lead this team to victory!
YourDreamGM
Good call by Shelton. He got his hit for the week. Someones gotta play.
User 1286178995
THIS is Pirates baseball, last night and tonight. It’s the schizophrenic, Jekyll and Hyde play I’ve grown familiar with. Can’t get too high on these guys. Can’t think they’re hopeless. No, they’re not machines, they just can’t find consistency one way or the other.
Keller is a great example. At times, he looks like Tom Seaver reincarnated. And at times, he complains he can’t get the feel for his breaking pitches, lives dead red, and gets shelled
But the late inning fun will start soon
If managerial, strategic genius Shelton can finally get some hustle from these guys at all times, I’m all set.
.500 baseball is all I look for. It’s all anyone can hope for, beyond fireworks, pierogi races and little kids being allowed to run the bases on a Sunday afternoon
Catch the spirit!
Mendoza Line 215
I hope for a second place finish in the Division, and 78-80 wins so I can win my bet.
I also hope that Ann Margret will finally return my phone call.
User 1286178995
I predicted 78-80 wins during spring training. I admit, I didn’t see them struggling to get even that.
But it’s two years in a row that I’m going to be damn close while others were getting caught up in the hype that comes from the marketing geniuses who bring you pierogi races
And I’ll predict it accurately again next spring, God willing
If they’re around .500, it’s ok with me. But I stop watching when you have the inmates running the asylum where hustle is concerned
The rebuild is over. It’s leaking in a number of places and has a great deal of dry rot, but it’s over. With no cavalry coming over the hill aside from a couple pitchers and perhaps Termarr, they’re going to keep doing what they always do in the off season. And that ain’t much
TheMan 3
It will be yet another low scoring performance to go along with double digit strikeouts by the Pirates hitters and Shelton will use the excuse that they didn’t execute
TheMan 3
I was right in part with the double digits and low scoring but without Keller’s pitching masterpiece and some timely hitting, this game could have been another loss
But I also have to point out that it’s beyond the time to begin the dfa process beginning with Michael A Taylor and promote the future of this team, Billy Cook. He’s younger with more upside than a player who rarely reaches base and strikes out quite often, even when scoring runs can mean winning games
Alka Williams has been given ample opportunities to show he belongs in the majors and has failed miserably. It’s time to send him back to Indy and promote another piece of the future, Nick Yorke
TheMan 3
And the strike outs continue, according to the announcers, righties are only batting .202 against the Texas starter but lefties are batting .292
If Shelton is such an analytical manager why does he have 8 right handed batters in the lineup?
Reynolds is mired in a 4 for 25 slump with 11 strikeouts. He’s swinging at everything thrown in his direction
TheMan 3
And Taylor does what he does best, strikes out on a pitch nowhere near the plate
This team and its management staff sucks
TheMan 3
8 strikeouts against a pitcher not known to be a strike out pitcher and in only 5 innings
Connor Joe and Taylor need to be dfa because neither contributes to this team’s offense
Joe strikes out with the bases loaded on pitches nowhere near the plate
It’s pathetic that a major league franchise has such an extreme amount of strikeouts and no one is being held accountable for this monumentally failure
As a team they are second only to the Rockies in ks and that shouldn’t be acceptable
User 1286178995
Loved that quote from Hurdle in Collier’s column about strikeouts. Well, quotes. He’d go out of his mind with this bunch
TheMan 3
I don’t subscribe to the PG, can you provide his quote please, SenorFigs
And having only thrown 75 pitches in 6 innings, German came on and pitched a gem, only allowing 3 hits and no runs. Not bad for someone who hasn’t made a start in the majors since last year
Still, the strikeouts are an embarrassment from a team that just 5 years ago had a team batting average of .265. Their offense woes began when they hired Haines
Hard to believe BC hasn’t noticed

I don’t subscribe either. Just go online and get my three free daily columns from guys like Gene

thank you sir
yeah this team definitely watches the opposing team play catch a lot
YourDreamGM
They have Germans rights for next year as well I believe.

TheMan 3
striking out 17 times in 9 innings is absolutely pathetic and Haines needs to be fired immediately.
In his 4 years as hitting coach, their team average has been .235.
They had several chances to score in this game but the strikeouts killed those opportunities and Bednar can’t be blamed for the loss, it’s on the failures of the hitting coach and the worst manager in baseball
ITS TIME FOR HAINES TO GO
Skeptical
@theman, wow, I’m going to agree with you, but I would save some of the blame for Kelly. Pirates squandered chance after chance. As the Pirates often seem to do, they outhit their opponent while being outscored. That takes a special kind of talent.
I had hopes for this team this year, thought they might win 84-86 games. Didn’t foresee the regression exhibited by players such as Hayes, Suwinski, etc. Mostly did not see how Shelton and his staff could mismanage games so bad. No hustle, no fire, lack of fundamentals, failure to adapt and change, etc.
Recommendation for all of you. If you are unfortunate to find yourself in the Phoenix area during October and early November, check out a game of the Arizona Fall League. Having attended MLB games, minor league games, spring training games and AFL games, I think the fall league games are the best pure baseball game experience. Yes, the quality of play is better at the majors, but the game has turned into a spectacle with cheerleaders, kiss cams, grossly overpriced beer, legend/presidents/sausage/etc. races, flashy score board, grossly overpriced beer, lots of electronic noise (“everyone clap your hands”), dancing bears, clueless spectators, etc. Spring training games suck as the talent is too varied, e.g. guy from rookie league pitching against a Judge or Soto. The Fall League has good and fairly consistent talent. Games are played in the spring training facilities on natural grass. Admission is cheap, open seating, all the fans (there aren’t many) are knowledgeable baseball fans and the beer is only mildly overpriced. I live in the mountains of northern Arizona (house is at 7,000 feet and we get lots of snow-average around 100 inches a year) and don’t like Phoenix but the fall league is worth going to Phoenix for.
User 1286178995
Meanwhile, Dream is thumbing his nose at us. Winker hit a walk off homer for the Mets
TheMan 3
Yeah, SenorFigs, it’s another mind boggling thought that Cherington preferred to trade for an outfielder, despite having 2 years before free agency, who doesn’t make contact as often as a one year rental in Winkler
Winkler has drawn 53 walks this year which would be a better sign for base runners rather than free swingers who can’t make contact with the ball.
I don’t know what goes through this GM’s mind at the trade deadlines or during the season for that matter
TheMan 3
When I lived in Jacksonville Florida, I would attend the Jacksonville Suns minor league affiliate of the Dodgers whenever it was possible since I often worked at the naval station in Norfolk Virginia and it was always far more enjoyable than attending major league games
I also attended the Norfolk Tides minor league affiliate of the Braves
Minor league games get the fans involved, the players are more personable and overall it’s much fun.
Plus these players want to win, they play the fundamentals and seem to be willing to learn
YourDreamGM
.288 average 11 strike outs, Winker isn’t Pirates type.
YourDreamGM
Haines fixed Triolo though. I am looking forward to all the hrs from him.
User 1286178995
No, to review, the comment was that Winker wasn’t going to push them to the next level. Nor was Jazz. At least, not by themselves. There are so many holes here that I doubt bringing Aaron Judge here would change much
They need two big guns where run production is concerned. They’re never gonna sign them
They need a focused, intense 3rd baseman who can work at hitting. They don’t currently have one
They need a shortstop who can play decent defense and hustle. They don’t currently have one
They need a closer
These are just the most glaring issues
Winker would have changed none of that
He’s on a better team with the Mets
YourDreamGM
I don’t mind strike outs as they usually mean a guy is hitting 30 40 hrs. There’s the problem. If you aren’t hitting hrs and you aren’t a contact hitter why exactly are you on the team?
TheMan 3
“if you aren’t a contact hitter why exactly are you on the team “
That’s question for several players on this current roster which includes Joe, Taylor and even Da la Cruz.
Trading for the latter while passing up Winkler has to be one of the worst moves this GM has made
YourDreamGM
Good pass on Winker. He wasn’t helping this train wreck. Would have took the prospect used to get Cooke minimum. 2 much for 2 months.
User 1286178995
It was nice to see De la Cruz awaken from his trance tonight.
Glad you finally agree about Winker. Point was never that he could have been an upgrade. At this point, I’m an upgrade. Just that he alone wasn’t going to lead this team to glory in the style of Roy Hobbs. Or Jack Elliot
User 1286178995
I said this last week but it bears repeating. I would rather watch the Savannah Bananas play the Party Animals than watch the Pirates at this stage
Yes, it’s fun…and funny
And yes, they try a lot of trick plays but jeez, they go all out doing so
And truth is, I love the idea that pop fouls that go into the crowd are ours if someone catches it
TheMan 3
PNC Park opened in 2001, not many players are still on their original team after 13 years thanks to free agency but I get your point that this franchise doesn’t keep players for very long, despite how good they are
Don Kelly is an equally bad Bench Coach as Hainez is a bad hitting coach. What information is Kelly telling the hitters?
Swing at pitches nowhere near the plate, because that’s what they continue to do.
And I agree with Dream, strikeouts are acceptable if the player is hitting many homers or driving in many runs, but that’s not even close to what these players are doing. Joe struck out twice yesterday with men in scoring position, and on pitches over his head.
But listening to Shelton’s post game analysis they weren’t executing
No s**t Sherlock, what was your first clue?
User 1286178995
I’m going to stop carping about Nutting, the GM, Shelton, the lack of discipline and talent. Truly, it’s repetitive and is what it is. I’m boring myself at this point let alone anyone who dares read. I’ll just focus on the overall play.
Again, all I can expect is a .500 team for the foreseeable future. That’s fine
TheMan 3
Except that the overall play will consist of lack of discipline and talent which is what defines this bunch of overpriced players and I am referring to the position players not the pitchers
User 1286178995
I’m convinced that either Mark Madden reads this message board or it’s just the Duquesne in us that breeds common sense to all sports topics, especially the Pirates
His column today is again spot on
TheMan 3
I agree with everything Madden wrote with the exception of Don Kelly being a better manager than Shelton
If Kelly has failed at being the Bench Coach, he isn’t likely to be better at the helm
This team needs new blood, someone not associated with the current system and that includes the GM and every single coach
User 1286178995
Joe Espada would have been perfect for this organization. He was out there waiting forever. Younger manager. Latino. A communicator.
I’m sure there are others like him
I don’t see Kelly as the answer either but he can’t be worse than Shelton
TheMan 3
Personally speaking, I want a manager who is better than his predecessor not one who can’t be any worse
YourDreamGM
Latino makes him a poor choice. Much better fit in Houston who actually develops international players. Pittsburgh hasn’t done that since Marte and Polanco.
Since the only thing that comes through our system is 1st round busts I recommend bringing Hurdle back.
User 1286178995
There was a time recently that we had guys like Peguero, Castro, Endy, Marcano, Oviedo, Ortiz, Hernandez and of course, Cruz, on the cusp of playing here. That’s about when Shelton was hired
You know better about what’s in the minors now, but the point was that they missed out on a better manager
TheMan 3
If Connor Joe’s 3 strikeouts weren’t enough for you in last night’s game, you can probably see more in tonight’s game since he’s in the starting lineup
Same holds true for another strike out artist on this team, Michael A Taylor
Shelton’s apparent goal isn’t to win, it’s to match the strike out total from last year’s team
TheMan 3
And as expected, Taylor strikes out again. If it wasn’t so bad, I would laugh
Plus, so Taylor doesn’t feel alone, they have struck out 6 times in the first 3 innings while going scoreless over their last 12 innings
Yet Shelton and Haines will still have a job tomorrow
TheMan 3
If left handed hitters hit better against this left handed pitcher, like yesterday’s game, why is the current Pirates lineup stacked with right handed batters?
Does this management not look ar stats or does Shelton write his lineup by pulling names out of his rear?
By the way, 8 strikeouts in 4 innings
YourDreamGM
That’s what Pirates need. Other teams to just give them runs. Happens frequently.
User 1286178995
Strange how young pitchers just fall to pieces as Ludolo did tonight. He’s dominant all game and then boom
Skenes arrived as a generational talent. Likely could have come straight from LSU to MLB.
If only all the Pirates draft choices were such no-brainer
User 1286178995
Figured I’d see some reaction here to Seattle’s decision tonight to fire its manager and hitting coach. Kind of strange timing, no?
TheMan 3
But they didn’t disappoint, 14 strikeouts to add to their season total
reacting to the Mariner’s manager firing….
If the firing had been Shelton, I would ask what took so long
TheMan 3
If this team stat isn’t enough to get Haines fired after the current season, nothing will
As a team they are on pace to strike out
1509 times which would be the most in team history and surpass their previous season record of 1497 set in 2022, also under the hitting coach, Andy Haines
YourDreamGM
Bring in the renegade to close out the w
TheMan 3
I said it last time this pitcher started, he sucks
Already down 4 runs in the first inning. There’s a valid reason why Seattle didn’t want Woodford and his almost 7 era is the reason
TheMan 3
it’s time to send Bae back to Indy, he’s yet to learn how to hit major league pitching or to protect the plate
TheMan 3
I guess Shelton doesn’t care about winning, leaving this loser Woodford in to give up more runs
They should’ve promoted someone to make it spot start, they are now losing 6-2 with only 1 out and two runners in scoring position
YourDreamGM
Someone has to pitch. This team is tanking. Cherington lied to you. If the goal was to win Bubba would be pitching. Not Sheltons fault. He has a bullpen to manage. Can’t pull a starting pitcher 1st inning unless you are seriously contending and the Pirates aren’t.
TheMan 3
I wasn’t suggesting this dud be pulled in the first inning and you don’t think Shelton has an opinion of who’s available to be brought up?
With Stratton likely done and another embarrassing performance by this starter, I imagine BC will go diving in the waiver wire dumpster
Three hite?
another pathetic performance courtesy of the worst hitting coach in baseball
YourDreamGM
Well game was over in the 1st inning. Guy isn’t good so just a matter of time before he gave up more runs. Just random luck it wasn’t 2 or 3. Shelton doesn’t have a clue what’s happening in minors. Not his job. No time. His opinion would be worthless anyways. He thinks Haines is good.
TheMan 3
Shelton doesn’t have time to know what is going on in the minors? Really?
His time certainly isn’t being used to help Haines improve the hitting or his base running coach to teach Cruz not to run from 2nd to third on a ground ball hit to the shortstop
TheMan 3
another base running mistake by Cruz and Shelton never said anything to him
They baby him and it’s sickening
YourDreamGM
I count 9 to 10 40 man spots available so the rule 5 won’t be an issue.
