Nick Ahmed elected free agency after going unclaimed on outright waivers, per the transaction log at MLB.com. The Dodgers had designated the veteran shortstop for assignment on Monday.
Ahmed signed with the Dodgers a month ago. With Mookie Betts and Miguel Rojas out at the time, Los Angeles added Ahmed directly onto the major league roster. The defensive stalwart started 14 games at shortstop. He continued to provide defensive value but didn’t produce much offensively. While Ahmed hit a go-ahead home run to help beat the Giants (his former team) early in his Dodger tenure, he ultimately hit just .229/.245/.292 in 49 trips to the plate.
Between San Francisco and L.A., Ahmed carries a .232/.271/.300 batting line through 221 plate appearances. While he has never been a huge offensive threat, Ahmed has particularly struggled at the dish over the last two seasons. The two-time Gold Glove winner remains a strong defender, but the lack of firepower at the plate has squeezed him off a trio of rosters within the past two seasons. The Dodgers have welcomed Betts and Rojas back in recent weeks. Even with Betts returning to the outfield, they were comfortable enough with their infield depth to waive deadline pickup Amed Rosario after five games.
Ahmed is now free to look for a third team of the ’24 season. If he signs elsewhere before September 1, he’d be eligible for postseason play with another club.
The final years of a guy trying to reach 10 years service time. Good luck to him.
Did he just make it? Is he just a little bit shy?
I wonder how many players are just a bit shy and take a job as a first base coach or something to make it.
He’s a bit short of ten years currently. He couldn’t be a coach and accrue service time, gotta be a player. Basically, just have to hope you stick or get a few opportunities at the end of your career and make the most of it.
The pension is for 10 years total as coach, trainer, or player. It’s for after they’re 62
Truth, you can click on his name and it takes you to a magical place called baseball reference where you can literally see his service time!
@lloyd bbref is as of January 2024, or his service time before the season starts.
I know.
It is magical. Unicorns and whatnot.
Just in case anyone wants to know, Nick Ahmed has just over 9 years(9.046) MLB service time so he’s very close to reaching the 10 year full pension vesting.
I believe sometime a little over a week ago I saw a tweet from one of the Dodgers reporter that the team held a champagne toast to him for reaching 10 years of service time.
Ahmed filled in reasonably for LA.
A 2.5 WAR/600 pace, though a lot of rounding issues in that few PAs
His 1.4 WAR/600 pace this season is probably more reasonable. Fringe starter / backup level performance.
24 hours and 20 minutes until game time
We would be interested in bringing this guy to training camp next year with the White Sox. We are gonna go look at some kids the rest of the way this year. Might have a starting spot for him next year.
so you’re making those decisions now? I figured it was someone like you.
I am working on the rebuild. We have Colson Montgomery down on the farm. Not ready yet. May not be a difference-maker when he is ready. Still need a placeholder for next year until August.
right on. hope you are a young man.
Can you tell Jerry Reinsdorf to eat a bag of maggots while you’re at it?
Just talked to Jerry. He said he is perfectly willing to “eat a bag of maggots” in exchange for a new stadium.
Aren’t maggots available at Guaranteed Rate concession stands?
You’re getting Guaranteed Rate confused with Wrigley. Rickets throws them in grease and calls them “mini fries”. Cub fans can’t get enough of them.
I’d suggest you not try to compare anything about the ChiSox to the Northsiders. Especially anything to do with Wrigley Field.

For all of those wondering, here are the facts:
Nick Ahmed came into 2024 with 9.046 MLB Service Time.
MLB Service Time works like this: .001 for Every Day (not game) you are on an active roster during the MLB Season.
One Year Of Service Time = 171 Days (.171)
So when you get to 9.171 (his target) it equals 10.0 (there is no 9.172).
Nick spent 104 Days on the Giants Active Roster in 2024 (.104)
So .104 + 9.046 = 9.150 meaning he needed 21 Days on the Dodger’s active roster to achieve 10 Years of MLB Status,
From July 24 to August 19th, Ahmed was on the Dodgers Active Roster. That’s 26 Days of Service Time (.026).
9.150 + .026 = 9.176 (which doesn’t exist because it stops at .171)
That means Ahmed has officially achieved 10.005 MLB Service Time. They probably didn’t make a big deal out of it knowing he was soon to be DFA’d, but the Dodgers did right by him in getting him to his 10-Year MLB Service Time number.
Hope this helps!
