The Giants signed Cavan Biggio to a minor league deal, the team announced (X link via Maria Guardado of MLB.com). The Dodgers released the infielder a couple weeks ago. He’s headed to Triple-A Sacramento.
Biggio has split the season between the Blue Jays and Dodgers. He’s hit .197/.316/.306 across 219 plate appearances. While Biggio has walked at a customarily strong 11% clip, he only has five homers in 74 games. This season’s 32% strikeout rate is a personal high. Biggio had below-average numbers with Toronto and L.A. and was designated for assignment by both clubs. The Dodgers sent minor league pitcher Braydon Fisher to the Jays in mid-June but moved on from Biggio around two months later.
While this has been a rough season, the lefty-hitting Biggio has average offensive numbers for his career. His .225/.341/.379 slash line over 520 games checks in two points better than average by measure of wRC+. That’s almost entirely driven by his very patient plate approach. Biggio works a ton of deep counts and takes plenty of walks, though that also comes with a lot of strikeouts.
Biggio was Toronto’s primary second baseman for a couple seasons early in his career. While the keystone is still his primary position, he has seen increasing work at the infield corners and in right field as he’s moved into a utility capacity. Thairo Estrada has had a poor season and the Giants have a righty-heavy bench group. Biggio offers some balance in a non-roster capacity for the season’s final few weeks.

??? More of the same. Name value for sure. But a solid .200 hitter no thanks.

Has he found his glove yet

D-backs move Jordan Montgomery to the bullpen. Some Giants’ fans were absolutely sure that Zaidi should have signed him instead of Snell.
I guess signing Biggio is for MiL depth. but he hasn’t been good for 4 years now. While it’s hard to understand the interest, it’s kind of a nothing burger. Maybe he’ll get a look if Wisely continues to tank, but I don’t expect he’ll see much playing time at all.
fred-3
The D’Backs even with the Jordan Montgomery disaster are gonna win 90 games while the Giants continue to do whatever it is they’re doing
Jean Matrac
Great job totally missing my point.

I actually wanted Shota but I also wanted Hoskins so there is that. One out of two aint bad but seriously Shota made a lot of sense and was relatively cheap. Still can’t believe he paid Lee $118 million but gotta give credit for Chapman if he can keep him past this year. Snell is a toss up and won’t be resigning unfortunately. Tonight hurt really bad BoMel continues to push the wrong buttons and look silly in extra innings. Giants baseball…. Nothing like it
Jean Matrac
The thing with Shota Imanaga was weird. MLBTR had him as #10 on their top FA list. They predicted 5/$85M. But the Cubs were able to land him for 4/$53M. By contrast, MLBTR’s prediction on Yamamoto was short by 3 years and $100M. It seemed to me that the Cubs getting him so cheap indicated that teams were underwhelmed by his profile. Clearly a miss by the Giants, but also by a lot of other teams.
I think Lee will be easily be worth his contract.
Totally agree about Melvin’s mismanagement. Last night wasn’t the first time that happened this season either.
Humm bumms
I was one of those regarding Montgomery over Snell. Maybe they can figure something out with Biggio for next year.

Humm bumms — Sure, DFA him THIS year.

Wisely is far superior to Biggio.
Jean Matrac
Wisely has gone 18 for 93, with 26 SOs and only 4 BBs since 7/1. He hasn’t been good at all. That strong start in his first 33 games appears to be illusory. Biggio hasn’t been good either, but his numbers are better than that. He appears to be no worse than Wisely. Wisely is marginally better with the glove, but certainly not far superior.

TellItGoodbye
The worst signing in SF Giants history, other than Barry Zito of course!
TellItGoodbye
? Are they supposed to just re-sign a guy who can’t hit, can’t run, and can’t stay in shape, just because he was once great years ago? Oh, and someone who heavily dissed the team to anyone who would listen?
Craw is done with the Giants, and we’re done with his ungrateful self.
Baseball77
While I agree it was time to move on from Crawford, his career was better than just one year and was a great defensive shortstop for years.
And to the point about him dissing the team, he isn’t the only one who’s exit from the team suggests there are problems. Bumgarner hinted to as much when he left for the D-Backs. Longoria did as well when he did his “not retiring” announcement, saying that he would only play for the teams he’d previous been on, except by specifically listing those teams, omitting only the Giants. And then there is JD Davis’ fiasco. Some could argue that FZ was forward thinking in moving on from Davis but it could also be argued that the situation messed Davis up mentally and killed his 2024 season. Point is, there have been plenty of grumbling and shots taken at SF front office by out going players. Its not just Crawford.
TellItGoodbye
I didn’t say he was great for one year, I said he was once great.
Baseball77
Sorry, misread that sentence.

It’s a minor league contract! Give it a rest. Glad he found a home. You guys will be cheering for him when you’re playing for nothing in September anyhow

Here comes the jealous haters because he has a rich dad

Ah yes all the jealous Cavan Biggio haters! Here they come!
Hahaha what?

Signing Biggio is just more of the same Zaidi acquisitions

The stigma of being paired with Guerrero and Bichette. All sons of MLB stars. All expected to be great. Odds were that one wouldn’t make it.
BoKnowsBonobos
What about Daulton Varsho? His father was a decent mlb player and he’s named after Darren Daulton. I think the Jay’s also have a few more potential legacy acts floating around the minors.
BoKnowsBonobos
Billy Warners kid who just debuted the other night. The Blue Jaya really love the sons of former players it seems. Nice to see they made uo for the subtraction of one hall of farmers son by adding another pretty quickly.
