The Cardinals have announced that infielder Nolan Gorman has been optioned to Triple-A Memphis. Fellow infielder José Fermín has been recalled from Memphis as the corresponding move.
For Gorman, it’s his first optional assignment in almost two years, as his last one came in September of 2022. Last year, he seemed to cement himself as a key piece of the club’s future, getting into 119 games and hitting 27 home runs. His 31.9% strikeout rate was quite high but he also walked at an 11.4% clip and provided that aforementioned power. His .236/.328/.478 batting line translated to a 118 wRC+, indicating he was 18% better than league average on the year.
Things have fallen off here in 2024, however. The power is still there, as evidenced by his 19 home runs, but his strikeout rate has climbed to 37.6%. Among qualified hitters in the league, that’s the highest in the league by a decent margin. Zack Gelof is at 35.2% and everyone else in the majors is below 32%. With Gorman’s walk rate also ticking down a bit to 8.5%, he has a .203/.271/.400 batting line and 87 wRC+ this year. He’s not considered an especially strong defender at second, so the declining offense is a real hit to his value.
The Cardinals were close enough to contention that they bought at the deadline, acquiring Erick Fedde, Tommy Pham and Shawn Armstrong. But they’ve had a rough August, going 5-12 on the month, including a 2-8 stretch in the past 10 contests. They have fallen to six games back of a Wild Card spot and have been shaking up their roster in recent days. Yesterday, infielder Brandon Crawford was released and outfielder Jordan Walker optioned down to the minors, with Gorman now following him down.
Utility player Brendan Donovan has seen a decent amount of second base this year and could perhaps take over at the keystone more regularly. With Pham’s addition to the outfield mix, Donovan won’t need to be on the grass as much, with Victor Scott II, Alec Burleson and Lars Nootbaar out there alongside Pham. Fermín can effectively replace Crawford and Gorman, as he can play both middle infield spots, as well as third base and the outfield corners a bit. He’s hitting .311/.424/.500 in Triple-A this year.
For Gorman personally, this optional assignment won’t impact his path to free agency but could cost him a chance at Super Two status. He came into this season with one year and 139 days of service time. He has already blown way past the two-year mark and would have finished 2024 at 2.139 if he stayed up all year. Based on past cutoffs, he would have had a strong chance at qualifying for arbitration this winter as a Super Two player. That could still be the case if he is quickly recalled, though every day that he spends in the minors will lower his chances.
The Cardinals used the 19th overall pick on Gorman back in 2018 and he was one of their top prospects on his way up the minor league ladder. They likely still view him as a key part of their future but he will have to earn it. “Obviously, it’s a game of production up here and at some point, you’ve got to consistently produce, or we have to find someone who can,” president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said yesterday, per John Denton of MLB.com. “I mean, that’s what it ultimately comes down to, and these are hard messages to hear. It can be frustrating, but this is what ends up defining you. With our offensive struggles this year, I think you can strictly look at the inability for consistent performance, day in and day out.”
Gorman will still have two option years even if he uses one here in 2024. That means the Cardinals could potentially keep him as a depth guy for quite a while if he doesn’t force their hand. Pham, Paul Goldschmidt and Matt Carpenter are all slated for free agency this winter, which could open up some playing time. They likely have some degree of interest in bringing all of them back, certainly with Goldschmidt, but Burleson or Luken Baker could theoretically take over at first base or designated hitter. That could then see Donovan slide back to more of an outfield role if Gorman can push his way into the picture, though the club’s offseason could also completely change the picture by next year and prospect Thomas Saggese is lurking in Triple-A.
thebirds
Cardinals need to take notes from the Blues. They are just wasting gas sending these guys down now.
lwingo44
Fermin is Olie’s yes boy!!
Mike56
Gorman should have been sent down 3-4 weeks ago . He was slumping badly and he was sitting quite a bit more. Needs go down and hopefully get right
Craviduce
just a weeeee bit late, lads.
This was an ASB move. Waiting this late is pointless, and they selected the wrong player. Saggese is much hotter at the moment., but not on the 40 man….so they went with path of least resistance
Blackpink in the area
Saggese has a 752 OPS at AAA. A couple good weeks doesn’t make up for the rest of the year when he hasn’t been any good.
Craviduce
Do you even watch the Minors?
Saggese has been hot since the middle of July. Another double, HR last night.
Fermin gets what chance? Maybe to play go fish with Baker on the bench? We know was Fermin is, he’s a minor league cast off from another org, who finally had a good Minor League season, and that happened to be with us. He’s not a major leaguer.
Blackpink in the area
Saggese has had a good month that’s not reason to call him up fella. Gorman had a near 4 digit OPS at the time of his call up and he’s still not ready.
Fermin is a bench guy. He’s gonna sit on the bench. Baker deserves more playing time he EARNED it with his performance this year and last year both. But both Baker and Fermin are bench guys moving forward.
spudchukar
Saggese hasn’t had the best of years, but he was MVP of the AA Texas League recently, so it isn’t like he doesn’t have some minor league credits.
Cardsfan1984
So they send down the .203 hitting Gorman to bring up the guy who hit .130 in the majors. Got it. At this point just keep Gorman and Walker up. Let them use the last month of the season to try and work their issues out at the big league level. Let them play EVERY DAY.
Blackpink in the area
Fermin barely got a chance to play. This is the right move. You can’t give guys playing time hoping they earn it they need to earn it before they get it.
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
If they were challenging the 1962 Mets losing record than they should be playing every day, but the cardinals are in the hunt for October and Gorman and walker have been hurting the ML team
Blackpink in the area
The hunt for a red October is unfortunately looking bleak at this point. The team has lost 7 of their last 8 at a time where other teams are catching fire.
What’s odd is it’s not the position players in Memphis that are owed opportunities nearly as much as the pitchers. Mcgreevy, Graceffo and Kloffenstein all should be getting opportunities. Granville is probably ready. Thomas has been good. These guys deserve a shot.
lesterdnightfly
“The Cardinals are in the hunt for October…”
Not even Alec Baldwin and Sean Connery could right this Cards’ ship. It is sinking fast.
They’re in the hunt for early tee times in October.
gbs42
They’re still in the playoff hunt? That’s getting very debatable.
Seamaholic
What the hell? I admit I (obviously) don’t follow the birds, but wasn’t he killing it early in the season? Or was that last year?
Blackpink in the area
Big Gorman fan but he earned this demotion. Last night’s at bat with the game on the line was terrible. So was Goldschmidts but can’t send him down.
Walker and Gorman are supposed to be the next Cardinal stars but both have been huge let downs this year. Without them being successful the team is in trouble long term.
stuffnya
Gorman ab was bad but Pham was worse
diggin4three
At least Gorman has proven, legit pop.. it seems to me Walker will always be too soft, but time will tell, as usual. Other guys liked Tavares or Reyes etc etc but I haven’t had hopes for a young Cardinal like I have for Gorman since Albert was here. I don’t know if he’ll ever become an average+ hitter, but I’m going to keep the hope alive at least another season or two. His development has become frustrating to watch and wait for, both everybody has to remember we learn more from our mistakes. He seems to me to be the kind of guy who can get his mind right after a few healthy servings of humble pie. I hope Nolan starts swimming again instead of sinking. I don’t know, just my opinion.
Blackpink in the area
Yeah Gorman legitimately could lead the league in home runs one day. But his pitch recognition skills are not impressive at all he needs to work on that.
Rsox
How bad has Gorman been that you send down a guy with 19 Homer Runs? When the Sox were in St.Louis it seemed like they couldn’t get him out
cards81
Since June he was striking out at about a 50% clip
Rsox
Seems like thats half the players in the league though
diggin4three
Hey there, don’t forget athletes around the globe have become so much better at all sports, kinda like the rest of life, in every aspect. Disposable “pros” are absolutely worth lifetimes of “working class” income just for sucking at their job.
Twoston
A .271 on base percentage, .203 at the plate, strikeouts at an obscenely high rate recently. 19 homers doesn’t wash the other stats away.
Blackpink in the area
I am a big Gorman fan but hes earned this demotion. All he does is try to hit home runs he has no other skills besides that.
Paleobros
I heard you were a big Gorman fan.
For Love of the Game
Cards fans, take some hope from the recent experience the Tigers had with Spencer Torkelson (fka “Spencer Torkelbust”). They sent him down for months, and while his minor league numbers improved over his MLB numbers, they weren’t really that good. For some unknown reason, they recalled him, and he mysteriously began stinging the ball. Maybe sometimes having a bucket of ice water dumped over an arrogant, over-idolized players might just work.
Craviduce
Gorman will be back up, and he’ll have an 7-8 game stretch where he smashes everything, then a 7 week stretch where he’s missing everything.
He’ll be traded in 2026, where he’ll instantly become a HOF for the Rays or Red Sox….
….and the beat goes on.
mostlytoasty
Gorman is horribly streaky, but that’s how a lot of power bats are who have whiff/contact issues. That’s why Brent Rooker has had some stretches where he looks completely lost at the plate (although I think he’s been more consistent this year iirc)
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
Spencer torkelson for Nolan Gorman?
I’m just kidding I’m surprised no one has done any nonsensical failed prospect trade proposals
Blackpink in the area
As a Cardinal fan I would do that deal but I don’t think the Tigers need Gorman. Perhaps they could play him at 1b though. I kinda like this idea both get a fresh start.
For Love of the Game
On behalf of Scott Harris, I’ll give a hard “no” to your generous offer. No way would I trade a guy who strikes out 24% of the time for one who strikes out 38% of the time (and 32% last year).
Blackpink in the area
I don’t have patience for homers like you champ. They are very similar players. I will leave it at that.
Motor City Beach Bum
How are they similar?
Motor City Beach Bum
I could see them sending Tork out of town. When a GM or POBO says a guy is part of their future I always cringe.
Work some other players into a deal and it might work for both. I like Gorman…Keith could shift to 1B like many have been talking about. Has Walker worn out his welcome in Stl yet? Probably not. Manning seems like he would benefit from a fresh start. I’m sure both teams have players who could fit in the right deal to address some needs.
Blackpink in the area
Both power hitters who aren’t great defenders. Both have 4 years of control left after 2024. Both were good in 2023. Both have been bad in 2024.
They are similar players.
Blackpink in the area
I really think a 1 for 1 makes sense. Cardinals could use a righty bat and Tigers could use a lefty bat.
JoeBrady

===========================
And as is my annual reminder to the 30 GMs, this is why you do not draft a 1B in the top-10 picks, let alone the overall #1. It’s like RBs in FB.
gbs42
FLotG,
What makes you think Torkelson or Gorman is arrogant and/or over-idolized?
Tigers3232
How does a 1 for 1 trade make sense for Tigers here?? Tork has far more upside.
JoeBrady
Gotta agree. Gorman has 299 K’s in the past two seasons, in 771 ABs. I’d still be interested in him, but he’s closer to steal territory now than giving up a real asset.
aaronharper
Diehard Cubs fan here absolutely loving the futility of the Cardinals. I have no clue what the cardinals are doing… they are terrible at valuing their own talent, they hang on to aging stars that have nothing in the tank, get rid of guys when their trade value is rock bottom. Oh and I sure am glad to have Mike Schildt in San Diego, versus having to compete with him in the central. Hope they offer Marmol a lifetime contract. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them hang on to an aging Goldschmidt for the next few years. Wouldn’t mind seeing him hit .203 with 10-12 dingers making 25 mil a year.
They have gone from one of the best organizations to truly one of the worst.
Blackpink in the area
Lol
Cubs have 1 championship in the last 100 plus years. And even that required a close game 7 to pull it off.
Slow your roll junior.

The Cubs are shooting for 2124, another 108 years.
Champs64
Aaron, I can understand your thinking and actually love your comments because it truly indicates that your Cubs have made your life miserable.

Angels, Rockies, Marlins, A’s, White Sox… So, sixth worst?
gbs42
The Cubd and Cardinals are a half game apart in the standings, so I guess the Cubs are just as futile.

Move that needed to be made much sooner. With the season winding down, it feels like it’s a desperate grasp at anything resembling a good decision by the FO. This, coupled with the Walker “miscommunication” of his expected usage seems to almost guarantee a managerial or PBO change this year, as Mo and Oli don’t seem capable of coexisting anymore.
FrontOfficeStan
Got to go Mo.

Those 2 guys really have led the Cards into a rare era of futility. As a Crew fan, I’m smirking. As a baseball it really feels like a shame. A Midwest club keeping the behemoths on both coasts at bay for decades was one heck of a run. Too early to say it’s over, but getting rid of those two guys as soon as possible would be a good idea.

Has to go there are too many of these guys that recieve undeserved glorification when they run a crappy organization you see it in all the major pro sports leagues in the US

Cardinals need to reassess their player development process. My best to JJ Wetherholt – good luck.
Blackpink in the area
Part of the problem is they simply don’t let young players play. That’s not the problem with Gorman. And it’s definitely not the problem with Walker. But many players earn the right to get a chance and then simply dont get it. Look at Liberatore. He was a top 50 overall prospect. He did everything he could have done in the minors. Gets up to the bigs isn’t amazing his first few starts and now is a reliever. Pallante got a chance to start in 2022 he performed well. Then the team decided to put him in the bullpen he didn’t start in 2023 and now has had success in 2024 but only got a chance because of injuries.
The rotation is filled with old men making giant sums of money. What good do guys like Crwlawford and Carpenter do? None they just block young guys from getting a shot just like Lynn and Gibson are doing.
stymeedone
Crawford and Carpenter allow youngsters to play everyday in the minors and continue to develop. That doesn’t happen playing once a week in the majors. Veteran arms help cover the innings load of a major league season. Starting pitchers at AAA are averaging 4 1/3 innings per start. The minors no longer prepare them for a major league work load.
Blackpink in the area
Crawford and Carpenter block youngsters from getting a big league opportunity. Baker doesn’t need everyday at bats he’s in his late 20s. He deserves a chance even if it’s just a bench bat.
How many innings are Mcgreevy, Kloffenstein and Graceffo averaging in Memphis this year? Look it up. It’s more than 4…..
L Francis Reves
I said Lynn was a mistake, as soon as they signed him. He’s proven me right.
Blackpink in the area
Both Lynn and Gibson were a mistake. Pallante and Liberatore could have pitched just as well and there are a lot of guys at AAA who need an opportunity.
Card66
Who is making the decisions for the Cardinals. this makes no sense to bring up Fermin for Gorman, What F-ing idiot decided on this move, Must be another Marmol and Mo move, this must mean that we are giving up.
msqboxer
Cardinals are just trying to save as much trade value on Gorman and make sure he doesn’t qualify for super 2 status. Or just screw him so they can be cheap…
stymeedone
Gorman needs to worry about keeping a major league job. At this rate, he may not be around for his arbitration years. You don’t pay big dollars for that level of production. Ask Tim Anderson how much he was going to demand in his first time thru Free Agency this winter. Gotta put in the work, if your gonna live the dream.
Blackpink in the area
If Gorman had an 800 OPS instead of a sub 700 OPS he doesnt get demoted. Sure service time matters and could be a small factor. But he’s earned the demotion he really has.
gbs42
You’re giving them credit for having a plan, which seems like a generous assumption based on how things have gone the last couple of years.
JoeBrady
Nonsense.
Jgwi2az
These are the best of times Go Brewers
spudchukar
Gorman deserves the demotion!
He is a one dimensional player. A lefty with power. No real speed, a good arm on the DP’s, but limited range, and not athletic enough for second. Rather see Prieto or Saggese, but the 40 man is the issue. Many cheered the Edman trade, I was not one of them. Pham certainly provided a spark, but lately not so
much. Fedde has been decent, but not much better than average, and hasn’t been able to eat many innings. Edman could have been the everyday 2nd baseman, for at least 5 more years, at a relatively cheap cost. Could have moved Gorman at the deadline for a decent return. Edman is vastly underrated!
mrperkins
Spudchukar, where are you getting the idea of 5 more years of control for Edman? He is a free agent after next year just like Fedde. And they make similar money. Edman MAY prove more useful next year but you have to get the cheap starting pitcher for a utility guy every time. And they got Pham and also Armstrong to replace Roycroft in case this team had a hot streak and threatened to make the playoffs. Mo did a terrible job with roster construction the last few years and needs to go but the Fedde/Edman deal was certainly a good one for the birds.
JoeBrady
Except for the fact that he’s a lefty, I’d like my RS to take a look at him.
Blackpink in the area
His best position is probably either 3b or 1b and that’s not a need for the Red Sox.
Blackpink in the area
I really think Gorman could be dealt in the offseason. If anyone has any trade suggestions happy to listen. I think Perdomo from the Diamondbacks would make some sense for the Cardinals and the deal would make sense for Arizona as well. Perhaps the Guardians?
mostlytoasty
Guardians like their contact-oriented players and Juan Brito is probably the heir apparent at 2B unless I’m forgetting someone
I don’t know what they’d stand to gain in return from any of these teams, but some of the worst teams in terms of OPS from 2B would be CHW, LAA, MIA, SF, and PIT.
Blackpink in the area
He’s not really a 2b. Gorman is only playing 2b because Arenado and Goldschmidt are around.
JoeBrady
Which is why I suggested trading Goldy & Arenado at the 2023 trade deadline.
Blackpink in the area
Hey if it were up to me I would have traded them too. But neither had a lot of trade value at that time. I don’t think teams were lining up to pay Goldschmidt 26 million in 2024 or take on the rest of Arenados contract.
Velo
Trade idea: Brendan Rodgers’ average and better defense for Nolan Gorman’s power.
Mercenary.Freddie.Freeman
Why option him. He hits homers isn’t that enough?
spudchukar
Edman is NOT a utility player. He was an All-Star secondbaseman, his best position. Yes, he is versatile, but to hang the “utility” moniker on him downright awful.
jmlang
Should have kept Tommy Edman, and flipped Gorman
TheStevilEmpire1
It’s time to shut Gorman down for the year and send him to the complex in Florida to figure it out. Give him a chance next spring and if he don’t stick then move on. There’s nothing else to be said.
He’s hitting arbitration next year and if he shows no significant improvement then he becomes an expensive experiment.
UWPSUPERFAN77
You guys are passionate. You won last night. Are the fans voting with your feet? Nobody in the park for 2 nights in a row!

As long as their hitting philosophy is swing hard just in case you hit these young guys are going to struggle. Unfortunately Its time to clear the decks and replace everyone from Mo on down!
