The Brewers optioned left-hander DL Hall to Triple-A Nashville this evening. The move creates an active roster spot for southpaw Bryan Hudson, who returns from the 15-day injured list.
Hall went to Milwaukee alongside Joey Ortiz as the secondary piece in the Corbin Burnes deal with Baltimore. The southpaw entered the season in the rotation but only made it through four starts. He sprained his left knee in April and wound up missing over three months. The Brewers just reinstated him from the 60-day IL yesterday. Hall got the start against the Reds, allowing three runs across 4 2/3 frames with nine strikeouts but a trio of walks.
That pushes Hall’s season earned run average to 7.29, albeit in a modest 21-inning sample. He’s striking out a slightly below-average 20.8% of opponents compared to a lofty 12.3% walk rate. Hall has never had great command, but he’s shown huge bat-missing potential throughout his minor league career. That was also the case in his limited big league work with Baltimore but has yet to materialize in Milwaukee. Hall is only getting swinging strikes on 8.6% of his offerings this season. His velocity was well down early in the year, though his fastball sat at a more customary 94.6 MPH yesterday.
Regardless, the Brewers will go without Hall for at least the next couple weeks. Barring injury to another player, he cannot be recalled for at least 15 days. Milwaukee still has a five-man rotation comprising Freddy Peralta, Tobias Myers, Colin Rea and trade acquisitions Frankie Montas and Aaron Civale.
Hudson’s return gives skipper Pat Murphy an eight-man bullpen again. The 27-year-old missed just a few weeks because of an oblique strain. Acquired from the Dodgers in a seemingly minor offseason trade, Hudson has authored a breakout 2024 season. He has fired 50 2/3 frames of 1.60 ERA ball behind a strong 28.4% strikeout rate. The former third-round draftee had a few rocky appearances preceding his IL stint last month but had been utterly dominant for most of the season’s first half. If he returns to that form, he’ll be a key high-leverage piece in a strong Milwaukee relief group.
Wasn’t he the starter tonight?
Last night.
Ortiz has been the star of that trade.
I would say Burnes has been the star… lol
OK! True!
The star going to the Crew was Ortiz.
Think I got that right now!
I think we all knew what u meant…!
I might be in a minority but I still think Hall will be a strong piece. Maybe he’s just a Pen guy for meow but I think he’s gunna be a very strong SP in the (near?) future!
Cheers Yountmeister, from one fan of a different #19… all respect.
Definitely meow meow!
He’s got to go to the pen
Gwynning, Hall will never be an SP. The sooner MIL figures that out, the better. He’s the second coming of Hader if used in a leverage role from the pen. But in a rotation, he’s less than a Five-n-Dive and is totally unremarkable.
I’d say Ortiz’ 6 years is the star.
Yes, Burnes has been the star of this trade. Ortiz has been “ok”. Certainly not the long term answer at 3b
Hall should’ve been a reliever all along.
Even though a rental, was surprised Milw settled for a nice utility player as headliner and erratic BP arm for TOR starter like Burnes. Would have been easy to walk from that take it or leave it.
That went to Elias’s head at the deadline and sellers flipped the bird when trying to employ same approach.
Calling Otriz a utility player is hilarious. Kid has already shown flashes of being a solid regular and is recovering from a (sizeable) dip with his neck injury.
cwizzy6;
He may wind up as the starting SS next year…and for years beyond.
Brewers were going to lose Burnes after 2024 anyway. They got a solid everyday player to join their young core that will be a contender for the next 5 years.
I enjoy watching Otriz play. He’s a hard-nosed, high-IQ ballplayer. Going to have a long ML career.
People call certain players “hard-nosed”, while they call other players with similar gameplay/attitudes “thugs”. I wonder what the differentiates between the two terms with baseball fans? Definitely not the intelligence.
Like Tommy Pham
Exactly. I’d called Pham a gamer/hard-nosed, because he just signs wherever wants him and gives his all until he’s traded, but I’ve rarely seen him called that. Many on this site call him a thug.
Yes, he “slapped” joc pederson. But, I’d ask if you called Robin Ventura, AJ Pierzynski, or Chase Utley thugs. Or any of those players that haze rookies thugs. MLB has a lot of scumbags.
Clown post bro.
Outside of the obvious racial baiting there’s a clear difference in hard nose and thug. A hard nose player like Ortiz will grind out ABs, dive for every ball and play every pitch like it’s his last.
A player referred to as a “thug” is a dirty player who will start fights, go in cleats high, or take cheap shots at players unnecessarily.
Seeing as how Ortiz is not white and Latin players are almost always the most unfairly critiqued of all baseball players for attitude, your racial theory has completely fallen apart.
This isn’t a situation where someone is calling Bill Romanowski hard nose and Brian Dawkins a thug. Any of us with the ability to apply common sense know Romanowski was the thug and Dawkins was as hard nose as they get.
How is it race baiting if you agree Utley and Pierzynski are thugs? They were known for starting fights and dirty slides. Milton Bradley as well.
Pham is as thug of a player as you can get. WTH are you talking about. Pham went full on cheap shot on WC at the plate earlier this year, then tried to fight him, then after the game doubled down and confesses his desire to trade blows.
You seriously got to put down the racial kool-aid and start to actually look at players and comments without the race baiting goggles. Very few people think like you do, by applying your ill-thought logic with a broad brush you’re making yourself sound silly.
I never mentioned race. A hit dog hollers.
Pierzynski wasn’t a thug, he was a total and complete dick. Even his teammates hated him.
There’s no need to make a list of thugs, there have been plenty of them throughout baseball for years, and almost everyone knows who they are.
The only people who defend those types of players are fans of the clubs.
The whole Thug/Hard nose debate is pointless in MLB baseball. Some guys just play hard and by playing that way they look dirty, but trying to act like Pham is one of those guys is hilarious.
Ok, so what were you insinuating the difference was between the 2 terms? You brought up the question, I’m just asking what you meant by it if it wasn’t about race.
I was asking why it applied to some and not others. I asked for an explanation. You jumped to point out Ortiz wasn’t white and pointed out how Hispanic players are unfairly critiqued, which was odd. But, I also agree because we are judging a player that had a very different life path than the regular fan is able to understand.
I was merely making an observation based on the commentary on this website.
Also pierzynski was what I would call a typical thug. He was self-important and would call for bean balls
AJ Pierzynski as an announcer seems like a totally chill guy to me. I don’t get any assholish vibes. I understand some people change once they are put in a competitive atmosphere; but every time I hear Pierzynski on the air he sounds like a totally reasonable guy.
I’m a big fan of Tommy Pham. He’s a gamer and totally focused on winning; there is a reason he is sought after at every trade deadline.
He was an absolute dick when he played. Obviously he can’t be like that on air, he wouldn’t be on air if he acted like himself.
Ozzie Guillen had the greatest quote of all time when he was Pierzynskis manager. It was something like.
“Those who play against AJ absolutely hate him, and those who play with AJ hate him less.”
I can never understand the whole ” he’s a good clubhouse guy” some posters use? How do they know? Are they towel boys in the locker room and see it happening?
Pierzynski IS a thug
Elias had a pretty good deadline with Eflin, Eloy, and Dominguez all doing well for the Orioles so far. We’ll see about that Rogers trade.
2.1 bWAR in 301 ABs.
DL pitch just fine. He’s eventually going to be a solid #3 once he rains in just a little of his control. Needs to be just wild enough to keep batters uncomfortable in the box. As for Ortiz, he’s only going to get better and better. #LuvMyCrew
I love the optimism. I think Hall is like Kopech. If the team entertains his dream of being a starter too long, then when he leaves they will watch another team turn him into a major bullpen piece for years.
I ride or die with my Brewers since the day they came to Milwaukee. I like Ortiz at 3rd with Brice sliding over to his natural position after Adames leaves. Montestario and Tyler Black can platoon at2b if Hoskins picks up option to stay. As far as Hall, I watched him pitch in high school in Valdosta,Ga. He’s a talented dude that I believe Hook, Henderson can get the best out of him. Brewers got a 6’5” SS in minors they compare to Gunner Henderson. Just need to place some smart purchase vets around young talent.
Milwaukee should resign Adames for 3-4 years if he’ll accept that term, leave Ortiz at 3B, Turang at 2B, and find a better glove at 1B. Trade Hoskins in the off-season.
I agree they should resign him but am sure Milwaukee has already offered all they are willing to go and Adames has said no since he will certainly get more from the Dodgers.
Brewers fans- trade for AJ Puk
Brewers FO- we have Puk at home
This is still a solid trade for both teams. Baltimore got the ace they needed for the year they certainly ended up needing one. Milwaukee has two guys with years of control and plenty of upside.
100% correct
The Brewers made a HALL PASS !!
The Brewers also got a draft pick from the Orioles in the Burnes trade. A Tennessee player that plays First Base. So still have to see how he turns out. Burnes was gone no matter what so it was a win for both teams. I don’t think Burnes will sign to stay in Baltimore anyway.
But the Orioles will probably get the comp pick for QOing him. That’s why MIL got the competitive balance pick.
They still got the draft pick and if they would’ve kept him they would’ve got nothing.
The Brewers would have received the comp pick if they had QOd Burnes, just like the Orioles will if they QO him.
I know that. I just like this trade because Ortiz will be a fairly good ballplayer which they have him for years to come, along with DL Hall who could turn out to be a very good mid rotation starting pitcher for the Brewers.
