The Angels have reinstated right-hander José Cisnero from the 60-day injured list, the team announced. He will take fellow right-hander José Soriano’s place on the active roster, while Soriano heads to the 15-day IL with right arm fatigue. To make room for Cisnero on the 40-man roster, the Angels transferred Luis Rengifo to the 60-day IL. Rengifo underwent season-ending wrist surgery earlier this month.
Cisnero, 35, signed a one-year, $1.75MM deal with Los Angeles over the offseason. Unfortunately, his tenure with the Angels got off to a rough start, as he gave up three earned runs in 2/3 of an inning on Opening Day. He went on to put up a 7.07 ERA across 14 appearances over the first month of the season. Then, he landed on the IL with inflammation in his throwing shoulder at the end of April and has been out ever since. However, despite his poor start, the veteran has a track record as a reliable middle reliever. From 2019-23, he made 222 appearances for the Tigers with a 3.84 ERA and a 4.16 SIERA. Thus, the Angels will hope he can provide some stability for the bullpen upon his return. While L.A. ranks fifth in MLB with a 2.69 bullpen ERA since the trade deadline, the underlying metrics (4.40 SIERA, 4.57 xFIP) suggest that is highly unlikely to last. Angels relievers have a 4.13 ERA and 4.25 SIERA on the season, and that’s including the innings Carlos Estévez and Luis García pitched before they were dealt.
Regrettably for the Angels, Cisnero’s return comes just as another arm hits the IL. Soriano, 25, has been a breakout player for L.A. this year. Since joining the rotation on April 10, he has a 3.36 ERA, 3.98 SIERA, and 2.1 FanGraphs WAR over 20 starts. In that time, he leads Angels starters in all three metrics. However, he lasted just 3 1/3 innings in his last outing on Friday. Manager Ron Washington told reporters (including Dan Arritt of the Orange County Register) after the game that he could tell Soriano was tired and lifted him so that “he didn’t hurt himself.”
Thankfully for the Angels, “arm fatigue” does not sound like a particularly serious problem. Indeed, Soriano explained that he’s “not worried about it being a major injury” and said he’s “going to work to come back as soon as [he] can” (per Arritt). That being said, Soriano has already thrown 113 innings this season, far more than he’s ever thrown before in any other year of his professional career. Considering the Angels have no delusions about competing for a postseason spot this year, they would be smart to exercise the utmost caution with Soriano. Nevertheless, Washington made it clear that he expects to have the promising young hurler back in his rotation before the end of the year (per Arritt).
With Soriano making his last start yesterday, the Angels will need to choose a replacement in time for Wednesday’s series finale against the Royals. The most logical choice would seem to be Reid Detmers, who twirled a gem on Friday at Triple-A, giving up one run in eight innings while striking out 11. Detmers, 25, has been pitching at Triple-A since he was optioned in June. His overall results at Salt Lake have been disappointing (6.37 ERA in 12 GS), but he’s already on the 40-man roster and has several years of MLB experience under his belt. Other options on the 40-man roster include Sam Bachman, Davis Daniel, and Kenny Rosenberg. Daniel and Rosenberg were optioned earlier this week, but they could be recalled early if they are replacing the injured Greene.
Beyond the 40-man roster, veteran Johnny Cueto is the most intriguing option. The 38-year-old signed a minor league pact with the Angels in July, and he has a 3.09 ERA in four starts with the Salt Lake Bees. However, he had a 5.71 ERA and 4.91 FIP over nine starts at Triple-A in the Rangers organization earlier this year. Meanwhile, he had 6.02 ERA and 4.93 SIERA in the majors for the Marlins last season. In other words, there’s a reason the two-time All-Star and 2014 Cy Young runner-up has been unable to get back to the majors in 2024.

Cool. Soriano has proven he belongs in the rotation and is well past his previous innings totals.
Rexhudler86
@halosheavenjj. Down with right arm fatigue scares me. A thumb injury could be a blown out shoulder with the angels medical staff.
Halo11Fan
Two Tommy John’s. It should scare every Angel fan.
Down 3-0.
AngelsFan1972
I have no problem with the Angels shutting Soriano down for a few weeks. He has proven himself and the Angels have nothing to play for.

Watching Jo Adell do Jo Adell things is priceless.
Another highlight last night was Soriano showing up Rendon for not making a play.
prov356
What did Adell do now?
Rexhudler86
@prov He cornered first base instead of running past the bag would’ve been safe.
AngelsFan1968
To be fair here, the first base was actually waving him around.
Halo11Fan
It wasn’t Adell, it was his base coach, Bo Porter? Curious, did you watch the game?
The Angels base coaches are terrible.
User 2976510776
Regardless, time and time again he doesn’t look for the ball on the basepaths. There’s times to look for the coach but you gotta see the ball to good runner. I hadn’t seen that since slow pitch softball.
Halo11Fan
That’s fine, but this is a bad example. When people use bad examples to make a point, it demeans their point.

I love how angel players are never accountable from some fans. Some fans think they should be coddled. They’re poor babes in the woods It’s always someone else’s fault except Minasian’s or the players. Does he have hearing? There’s all sorts of sounds to indicate a throw was coming! He could hear that the crowd didn’t cheer so he knew it didn’t go past! He could hear yelling from the dugout right? Does he have eyes? Did he see the first baseman set up for the throw? I’m gonna love it when you’re still defending Adell and Minasian next year when the only worse teams are the Rookies and White Sox.
Halo11Fan
Hyperbole doesn’t work either.
Of course the players are accountable, and so are base coaches. In this case Adell didn’t pick up the ball. He doesn’t know if it got past him or not, so he’s picking up his first base coach, as he ought to do, and he sees his pin wheeling arm.
This was so obviously Porter’s fault. Anyone who doesn’t know that, doesn’t know baseball.
When Adell makes a mistake, point it out. But don’t blame Adell for that. It just evidence you either didn’t watch the play or didn’t understand the play.
Rexhudler86
@halo11fan I didn’t see porter wave him through, anyway the third baseman dove on the line why would you round the bag. I could tell he caught it. Adell constantly makes errors on the basepaths, whether it’s doing that or missing the bag completely. He has 14 sb’s and has been caught 8 times.
Halo11Fan
Adel is a bad base runner, so I can see where Angel fans would want to blame him for that, but that one was on Porter.
A batter, when he becomes a runner, can lose sight of the ball. It could have just as easily gone under his glove. And then it’s a double.
I’ve never in my life had first base coach pinwheel his arm where he didn’t want me to make a turn. And neither has anyone on this board. It doesn’t happen.
This one is on Porter.
Rexhudler86
@halo11fan I’m going to check it again. I focus on adell’s running just like rengifo’s defense. They need to bring in Rickey Henderson to teach a course on baserunning.
Halo11Fan
That’s probably true, they made a huge mistake the other night. I think it was Drury. With no out, runners on the corners, there was a double play ball hit to third.
Drury went back to the bag, the third baseman booted the ball, and Drury scored. The last thing you want is two outs and a runner on third, and that the best case scenario if the third baseman made the play.
That’s bad base coaching and bad baserunning. The Angels have an abundance of both.
Halo11Fan
Really? I took out Chili Davis once to prevent a 1,2,3 DP.
There are plenty of times I ran head down to first. Watching everything takes time. You were obviously as slow as molasses.
Halo11Fan
You actually watched an infielder start a double play, field a bunt, or flag down a ball in the 5-6 hole?
What a terrible baserunner you were!!!!
bkbk
We found the dude who’s never played baseball
nukeg
I’m no Jo Adell apologist, but that play by Austin Riley was off the charts amazing. With the ball behind him as he was running, Jo was 100% reading Porter. Porter was probably stunned that Riley got to that ball and clearly chunked the coaching decision / motion.
AngelsFan1972
Adell lacks good baseball instincts,
He more than likely was never coached properly or disciplined by his coaches growing up. Many youth and high school coaches let their players skate by because they are such good athletes. If that is the case it is too bad, because had he learned better baseball fundamentals he would be a lot more fun to watch.
AngelsFan1972
Not sure where you are seeing hyperbole.
The issue is how often Adell makes mistakes on the field, and unfortunately for him he usually makes them at critical times. He has been playing long enough that the mistakes should have been far lessened by now,
I hope for his sake someone takes him to the film room and gives him some good old baseball 101 and he becomes a more cerebral player.
Halo11Fan
It was a sensational play, and no one on this board has any experience being a hitter on such a play.
However, if I hit a ground ball in the 5-6 hole, I didn’t watch the play, I’m trying to beat it out.
I can’t imagine looking behind me to see if the 3rd baseman made the play. Again, I’m trying to beat it out. And if I see the firstbaseman pin wheeling his arm, I’m rounding the bag.
Halo11Fan
1972, Maybe, but players with no instincts rely on their coaches.
Porter screwed up that play. It’s not remotely debatable.
Halo11Fan
1972, the issue was who screwed up that play.
It’s hyperbole to say he needs to be held accountable and not the first base coach.
The right person needs to be accountable.
AngelsFan1972
I wasn’t debating who was or wasn’t wrong ON THIS PLAY, I was stating that had Adell not had this history of blunders, most people would have swept it under the rug already.
AngelsFan1972
They are both accountable.
I have rewatched the play, to me Adell wasn’t exactly at full speed. Porter completely misread the play it as well.
Adell’s history of mistakes does not help his cause either.
In the grand scheme of things it really does not matter, other than let’s hope both player and coach learn from it.
Halo11Fan
Next time he blunders, talk about it. It shouldn’t be long….right?
But I seem to remember people ripping on his defense long after he became an adequate outfielder. First impressions are hard to get rid of.
But as a hitter he doesn’t cut it. 86 OPS+ is enough. N
Rexhudler86
@devopettis I’ve seen him scream in his glove many times when rengifo would do his normal gaffes. He does get screwed in alot of his starts, luckily he can get out of it.
User 2976510776
Maybe that’s why they’re giving him a vacation. He’s past screaming into his glove and throwing up his arms in despair now.
User 2976510776
We need you back In the booth Rex. Ok tired of hearing stories that start off with “when I was with the Kansas City Royals, George Brett used to…”
And has anyone noticed that all they talk about from the 02 team is Bud Black? Your think he led the team that year. Scioscia and Maddon have been frozen out of telecasts. “When I was with the Kansas City Royals, Bud Black used to…”

You know you are a terrible team (Braves) when a guy goes on a DL the day after shutting down your lineup.
Cant wait for an overhaul of the team and management for 2025

Nobody from the 2002 World Series team is still on the team. Think of that. Unbelievable.

During the Angels game tonight a ball hit by the Braves Whit Merrifield hit above a little yellow square on a beam in left field . Merrifield pulled in to second until the umps got it right.
The announcers said that they never even noticed it let alone a ball hit the beam above that yellow square!
Believe it or not when the umps signaled home run, umpire James Hoy made the call. His umpire shirt was zipped down showing a T-shirt of a Cosmo Kramer painting! New York buzzed him to zip it up!
The craziest two things to happen back to back!

Cisnero has been a solid contributor for the Tigers before 2023. I hope for him that he can find his stride again to get a major-league contract next year.

@devopettis I put on a kc feed to hear hudler, and he wasn’t calling the game this year. Maybe it was a day off, but I wouldn’t mind if he came back. I know he busted with pot, and was gone shortly after. I miss him talking about the x mo.
MLBTR needs to hire editors
There shouldn’t be a comma after “then” in: “Then, he landed on the IL with inflammation in his throwing shoulder at the end of April and has been out ever since.”
If you switched “he” and “then” around, there’d be no comma, so there shouldn’t be one in this instance either. This Leo guy needs to work on his punctuation.
