Jazz Chisholm Jr. is on his way to the Big Apple. The Yankees announced they’ve acquired Chisholm from the Marlins for three prospects: catcher Agustin Ramirez and infielders Jared Serna and Abrahan Ramirez.
Chisholm, 26, was a consensus top-100 prospect when the Marlins acquired him from the Diamondbacks in the deal that sent right-hander Zac Gallen to Arizona. While Gallen has blossomed into one of the NL’s top starters since arriving in the desert, Chisholm’s time in Miami has been far less consistent. After a rookie 2021 campaign where he split time between shortstop and second base with roughly league average offense, Chisholm committed to second full-time in 2022 and broke out in a big way with an excellent .254/.325/.535 (136 wRC+) slash line that year. Unfortunately, Chisholm’s All-Star campaign was cut short by a stress fracture in his back that limited him to just 60 games that year.
That injury combined with the Marlins’ lack of quality options in the outfield led Miami to move Chisholm out of the infield ahead of the 2023 season, installing him in center field. The results of that experiment were somewhat mixed, as Chisholm took a step backwards on offense with a 103 wRC+ and was limited to just 97 games by a bout of turf toe but proved to be surprisingly solid defensively in center with +4 Outs Above Average, although Defensive Runs Saved disagreed with that assessment and graded him as one of the ten worst outfield defenders in the sport last year with a -14 figure. Chisholm’s offense hasn’t rebounded much in 2024 as he’s slashing .249/.323/.407 (104 wRC+) on the year, but his defensive metrics have settled in a bit more to paint him as a roughly scratch defender (+1 OAA, -4 DRS) in center field. Perhaps most importantly, the youngster has stayed healthy and on the field this year as he’s appeared in 101 of Miami’s 104 games while even getting some work in at second base again in recent weeks.
Chisholm’s versatility is surely part of what makes him an attractive addition for the Yankees. While Aaron Judge and Juan Soto’s otherworldly 2024 campaigns have kept the Yankees offense afloat for the most part to this point and allowed the club to post a solid 60-45 record overall, they’ve gone just 6-13 in the month of July thanks in part to a lackluster supporting cast that has seen only catcher Austin Wells post above average numbers by measure of wRC+ among healthy Yankees players with at least 100 PA this year not named Judge or Soto.
With so many spots in the lineup that could do with an upgrade, Chisholm’s slightly better than average bat and versatility figure to be a major asset for the Yankees. SNY’s Andy Martino was among those to suggest following news of the trade that Chisholm’s position with the Yankees is not yet fully set in stone, and it’s easy to see why. Chisholm’s ability to play center could allow manager Aaron Boone to turn to struggling left fielder Alex Verdugo, who has posted a wRC+ of just 56 since the start of June, less often while pushing Judge to a less taxing spot in the outfield or perhaps even allowing him to DH on days where both Chisholm and Verdugo are roaming the outfield.
On the other hand, Gleyber Torres is having a relative down season (96 wRC+) as the club’s regular second baseman and third base has been a massive hole for the Yankees all season, though neither Torres nor Chisholm have any experience at the hot corner in the majors. Given Torres’s excellent 119 wRC+ against lefties and Verdugo’s brutal 63 wRC+ against fellow southpaws this season, it’s possible even to imagine Chisholm (who sports a decent 96 wRC+ against southpaws in spite of his own lefty bat) playing the outfield against lefty starters while mixing into the infield more often against righties, allowing the Yankees to play matchups more effectively for both Verdugo and Torres, especially in the event that New York brass don’t want to have either Chisholm or Torres learn third base on the fly.
Of course, another factor in Chisholm’s value to the Yankees is the fact that he’s controlled through the end of the 2026 season. For an offense that figures to see Soto, Torres, Verdugo, J.D. Davis, and perhaps Anthony Rizzo all depart for free agency following the 2024 campaign, adding Chisholm to the lineup as a long-term building block alongside sluggers Judge and Giancarlo Stanton as well as youngsters Wells, Anthony Volpe, and Ben Rice offers the Yankees the ability to decide Chisholm’s long-term home on the diamond based on both his defensive performance and the needs of the roster surrounding him in an offseason where re-signing Soto figures to be the top priority. It’s possible to imagine Chisholm settling in as a fixture of the club’s mix in either the infield or outfield depending on both the club’s external additions this winter and the performance of up-and-coming youngsters in the club’s system like infielder Oswald Peraza and outfielder Jasson Dominguez, both of whom could vie for everyday roles in 2025.
As for the Marlins, they’ll receive a package of three prospects in return for the youngster who has been the club’s lone productive hitter this year ever since Luis Arraez was dealt to San Diego back in May. The closest to making an impact at the major league level of that group is Ramirez, a 22-year-old catcher who is already on the 40-man roster and reached the Triple-A level earlier this year. The youngster is just the #20 prospect in the Yankees system according to MLB Pipeline but is a far more robust third in the system according to Baseball America.
A bat-first catcher who slashed an impressive .290/.372/.570 in 58 games at the Double-A level this year prior to his promotion to the next level, Ramirez offers enticing raw power and a knack for making contact in the zone, though upper-level breaking balls have given him trouble and both Pipeline and BA suggest that he’ll need to improve his swing decisions a bit to reach his potential as a hitter. Scouts have plenty of questions about whether or not Ramirez will be able to stick behind the plate in the majors, though there’s optimism that he’ll have a future in the big leagues even if he ends up moving off catcher to a more offensively demanding position like first base.
Also heading to Miami in the return is Serna, a 22-year-old infielder in the midst of a solid season at the High-A level. The club’s #19 prospect per Pipeline and #11 prospect per BA, Serna has slashed a respectable .253/.341/.444 in 88 games with the Yankees’ affiliate in Hudson Valley while swiping 11 bags and slugging 13 home runs, although his body doesn’t project for much more power and he’s expected to slug at below average levels in the majors. Serna is also viewed as unlikely to stick at shortstop long-term, with BA noting that his fringey arm means he’s likely to end up at second base although he does have experience in the outfield and at the hot corner as well.
As for the latter Ramirez, he signed with the Yankees out of Venezuela back in 2022 on a $30,000 bonus (h/t Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com) and made his stateside debut earlier this year. In 49 games in complex ball this year, the 19-year-old has looked good with an excellent .348/.447/.513 slash line in 189 trips to the plate while splitting time between shortstop as well as second and third base. Ramirez is not ranked within the Yankees’ top-30 prospects by any major public-facing evaluators at the moment, although given his youth and big numbers in complex ball it wouldn’t be a shock to see him make some noise in that regard with Miami at some point in the future.
Craig Mish of SportsGrid first reported the Yankees and Marlins were in talks about a deal that’d send Chisholm to New York for three prospects. Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic was first to say the deal was done. ESPN’s Alden González reported Agustin Ramirez was the headliner and Abrahan Ramirez’s inclusion. Christina De Nicola of MLB.com had Serna’s inclusion.

Rosenthal reporting deal is done
Not the move I expected but it’s great to see deals before the last minute.
Perfect simulation world we would have 3 to 5 a day they week leading up until deadline then a flurry on Monday Tuesday. Not bad so far. Hopefully and should vet get a few more tonight. Between 5 and 10 Sunday. Then real action begins. But Sunday could be fun.
That wind be like 45-50 according to your math
He is an automatic upgrade to Gleyber and Grisham.
I think he’ll make a ‘smooth’ transition into the pinstripes, and he’ll have a real ‘fusion’ with his teammates and fans when they see him ‘swing’ the bat and ‘bebop’ around the bases.
Not to toot your own horn
Can someone explain how this helps the bullpen? I’m at a loss to see how a 2B/CF helps you protect any lead you may have.
This guy doesn’t even fill the existing holes the Yankees have in their lineup.
8 am viewing this as Cashman doing something just so Michael Kay doesn’t say he did nothing.
He’s young and athletic which is a step up from the usual plodding Cashman addition. Still got Chad Green and guys like that out there for the bullpen restyling.
Yankees need more than bullpen help. Half their line up is a black hole, Jazz helps alot.
@ CPTNCHA- Be careful, you don’t want to upset all the “woke lefties” on here by using a word like “black hole” in the same sentence as Jazz Chisholm. They won’t have any of that nonsense!
RShore just had to make an a$z of himself
RShore, do y’all ever just shut up?
Want me to set up another hypothetical straw man for you so you can knock it over and feel strong and tough??
RShore05–No, that’s a problem. Most “woke lefties” also believe in science. Unlike some, we know what a “black hole” actually is.
@Cbeastball Wahhhhhhhhh sniff sniff
Chisholm is an average bat with average to below average defense at two positions. He is also injury prone. Other than being younger and faster than most of the Yankees, he fits.
It’s a boost for defense, which helps all pitching.
If you think Chisholm boosts the defence you are not paying attention.
Is he that bad in the field? Every game I’ve seen he looks pretty good and makes some amazing catches.
I’m no GM, but I think it is possible to work on multiple deals at the same time.
When owners interfere…
Cashman is jazzing the place up. Ahahaha!
He can’t be worse than what they’re running out there now.
Joe, I totally agree. But, I’m not a fan of this move outside of that context. I feel that the Yanks have/had better options. To be frank, I think he’s one of the most overrated players in the game.
We desperately need a closer too, imho. Tanner Scott is equally, or more, important.
And please fire Boone.
Firing Boone is the most important move the Yankees can make. His managing/mismanaging the bullpen led to another disaster last night. Why was Weaver out to pitch the 8th after pitching the 7th, and why was Holmes on for a five out save?? Relievers don’t like to sit down and get back up. That’s a job for a starter.
Hopefully they fire Cashman and the new GM will bring in a good manager.
Aaron F’in Boone may get the sack if the Yankees are swept by the Red Sox.
Brian Cashman fired? Not unless you want Omar Minaya with his Mets baggage shaping the Yankee roster.
Cashman isn’t the issue. He gave Boone 90 wins through roster construction and he is blowing it.
It would be worth getting swept if Boone got fired.
I’m on record regarding Cora. It amazes me how much of each fan base can be so negative regarding their managers. Will Boone follow with An expensive extension? Is it his fault on how this team was assembled?
Haha. They have two hitters in the lineup. Everyone knew that at the start of the season and you want to blame Boone? They had a run of good fortune with the pitching to start the year but reality has set in. Stop paying ridiculous contracts like DJ, Stanton, Judge, etc. it doesn’t work and any manager with this crop would be failing. Jazz helps but there are still plenty of holes to fill.
You must not watch Yankees games. Boone is the worst manager in MLB. Cashman did not fill out a lineup card that had Jahmai Jones leading off and JD Davis cleaning up. Cashman is not the one leaving relievers in too long and for multiple innings. The players usually compensate for Boone’s incompetence, but the pitching falling off and injuries to Stanton and Rizzo expose Boone for the braying donkey that he is. The sooner he goes back to the broadcast booth the better.
You’re right I don’t. O’s fan but Rizzo and Stanton aren’t the answer. Losing Rizzo to Rice isn’t their problem. He hasn’t done much in two years now. Stanton is always hurt. Boone is trying to win games with inconsistent hitting and staring pitching. Their starting pitching doesn’t go deep in games so he’s forced to rely on the bullpen pitchers who produce. If other guys were hitting it would be a moot point but since that is not happening the bullpen. Is being asked to pick up the slack. Enjoy the rest of the season and I hope they sign Soto to 10+ years.
I don’t think any of us blame Boone for the roster construction. But, Boone’s team is performing ahead of only the White Sox over the past 30-40 games. And, it is every year.
Bottom line: Boone’s team has more talent than the level at which they’re performing, so yes, that falls squarely on Boone’s shoulders.
Is it his fault he has Jahmai Jones and JD Davis on the roster? No. Is it his fault he bats Jones 1 and Davis 4 in the lineup? Yes.
Is it Boone’s fault that he talks about how well players are performing when they have some of the worst stretch of baseball of their careers? Yes.
Good managers get the best out of their teams. Mediocre managers get teams to perform to their baseball cards. Poor managers get teams who consistently fall short of their expectations.
No. Your welcome for how the team is assembled. Cashman does not fill out the lineup card or manage the pitching staff. You don’t watch the Yankees play if you think this is about “construction of the roster”. Just because Aaron Hicks is “on the roster” doesn’t mean that you write his name on the lineup card 120 times. Cashman didn’t say “I got you JD Davis now put him in the cleanup spot”. Boone is a donkey’s hind quarters.
Maybe not the only one, but he is a problem.
Well done Clip! That is it exactly.
They have two hitters in the lineup. Everyone knew that at the start of the season
======================
That’s only if you expected Torres and Volpe to be this bad. Even Verdugo is quite a bit worse than expected.
Cashman isn’t the issue? Boone isn’t the one acquiring Verdugo, Rodon, etc… Serioiusly how can anyone blame the manager when it’s a talent problem?
LMAO Cashman is the one giving Boone Jones and JD Davis to fill out the lineup card. Anyone who thinks Boone is the issue doesn’t understand how important having actual talent on the roster does to a team’s winning percentage
What talent? Verdugo is below average. DJ is below average. Rizzo is below average. Gleyber is below average. Their bullpen is Holmes and a bunch of waiver claims. You’re acting like any of these guys would go to another team and somehow be successful. Apparently you’re not paying attention here…
As a guy who doesn’t pay super close attention nowadays to MLB, how do the players get on with Boone? I always thought it was an odd hire. I think players really respond well to older managers in general. I also think they are better managers generally. There are some good young managers though. Kevin Cash comes to mind. Former catchers seem to make good managers too.
Agreed Clipper. I was hoping for Rengifo, not that he’s anything to write home about either. Just not much available this deadline unfortunately.
Just what the Yanks need, another player who’s always hurt. Who’s next, Buxton?
@joe rengifo is a alright 3rd, and can play a passable 2nd but trust me the fan base won’t like him when he throws to the wrong base and dives early on a easy play costing runs. He’s very inconsistent fielding, but has a decent bat.
Clip, ya can’t fire Boonie until you change your pic! Cashman’s terms, sorry bud! 😉
Gwynning: Funny you mention that because I committed to the pic as a form of protest {until} he is fired. So, you are spot-on as far as the correlation.
I figured: “Why should Yankees fans be the only ones punished by looking at this dude’s mug all the time?”
This sounds like one o’ dem Mexican standoffs if I ever seen ‘un! Cheers Clip, all the best.
*hat tip*
Maybe he can get all the face work and Botox done like Brett Boone has and it’ll be even worse to look at his mug.
Ya really is overrated
Clipper, would you have preferred Bellinger?
No. As JoeSays stated, I think there were better IF options suited for the Yankees lineup. More importantly, I feel like their prospect Ramirez, who is regarded as a very good hitting catcher, should have been used for Tanner Scott instead of Jazz.
Of course, it is possible Scott was discussed and they weren’t willing to move him, but I doubt it. If they weren’t, the Angels have a decent closing option as well.
Jazz is a typical Cashman bandaid. I HOPE I am proven wrong by this move. But for now, I don’t like it for the Yankees.
So you wanted them to use their biggest non Jdom/SJones trade chip for a rental RP instead of an athletic up the middle guy just entering his prime under control through 2026? Yankees have a terrible record of improving on up-and-coming players but still…
If Chisholm was overrated he would have costed a lot more than those 3 prospects.
Completely agree with you YC. Chisholm is one of the most overrated players in MLB imo. He acts as if he’s a perennial All Star but his #’s say he’s an Average hitter and Below Average fielder. On top of that, where do they intend to play him? CF? 2B? Mix of both? Bc with Stanton coming back Monday and tying the the DH spot on most days, it seems like they’re planning on having Chisholm in CF and moving Judge over to LF? That would move Verdugo to the 4th OF, and only playing against RHP. Idk, I just feel like they have far bigger and greater needs at the back end of the BP as well as 3B. Do you they maybe try Gleyber at 3B with Jazz at 2B and see how that goes? Idk, I’m just not a big fan of the move at the moment. It’ll be interesting to see how Verdugo responds/reacts to this move, bc it feels like they’re throwing in the towel on hopes of him turning it around at the plate this year. And I wouldn’t be surprised if they end up moving him before the deadline. On the positive side of this, Jazz seems like the type of player who could really benefit from playing in NY in the pinstripes and elevate his game. And he’s under team control for a few more years, and if he’s their 2B in 2025 I wouldn’t be upset at all with that as his offensive profile is very similar if not better than Gleyber’s. But they still need Relief Pitching!!! I’m really starting to have a deep dislike for Clay Holmes and his bright red rosacea cheeks
Will play Left Field and Second Base (Judge is Center)
“He acts as if he is a perennial all-star” how? What has he said or done to make you think that? Just because he enjoys playing the game and has fun? I’ve never heard him say anything that makes it seem like he’s full of himself.
Maybe if Verdugo didn’t have a lower OPS than Rob Refsnyder he’d have a leg to stand on…
Hilarious that you’re planning on Stanton playing every day.
How about a manager trade?…..Boone to Jays for Schneider…..
Schneider would get fired after this season… if there’s no Shapiro and atkins
This jays FO loves Schneider
Counter-offer: Boone for Mattingly.
An underwhelming player.
He is, but his stat line would make him one of the best hitters on the team and when going OPS+, he is just behind Judge, Soto, Stanton, who will return on Monday and Wells.
Exactly.
It’s a start! Ahahaha!
Seems like a natural fit!
He will help but he’s another strike out machine for the Yankees. Cashman will never learn.
Gwynning;
It’s a typical Hal Cashman / Yankees type move. Eye-candy catching that will result in some highlight reel type entertainment. What it won’t do is improve the team in a solid way.
As I wrote under the Winker article – it’s Stearns with the Mets that has been making a series of subtle moves that ultimately brings a MLB team success.
Posthype bum Yanks prospects comin up
Jazz and Stro are gonna be the biggest cry babies on the same team. Just need Tommy Pham now.
+Ross Stripling
What’s wrong with chicken strips? Always got the vibe he was a good dude when he was with the jays
i’m an astros fan lol
Stro’s been fine as a teammate.
Did you miss him throwing a tantrum with Gleyber Torress last month?
Stro wasn’t wrong. Gleyber lollygags and has no passion
Did you miss the way they made up and bonded?
Plus Gleyber could use a kick in the pants from time to time.
Just need to bring in Jackie, I mean Tim Anderson.
Jackie is still available.
Josh Donaldson would be so happy with Jackie he would unretire to go back to the Yankees and be his teammate
100% right. Talent, yes. Good team chemistry, NO.
Oh not fans of player of a certain race who voice their opinions that don’t agree with your white republican views? Oh what a pity. Cry me a river trumper
Read up on what he said about Miguel Rojas. This guy is immature, irresponsible, and has no accountability.
Let’s go, Brandon!! I mean, Let’s Go Brenda!!!
Oh look RShore making an a$z of himself a second time
RBore, do y’all ever just shut up?
I don’t think this guy likes Josh Donaldson
Geez filihok a.k.a. CBeisbol big mad! Seems like he forgot that TA referred to himself as “The New Jackie”!!! Any criticism is deserved. And go ahead and “adios” me now. Your contributions here are… limited. Your comments are batting around .005, truth be told.
He’s such an idiot, I wish I could send insulting comments to him, but sadly, I can’t.
Compact swing, squared up the ball… homerun Eatdust! Haha
He just popped out to lower his average to .004.
Anxious to see what desperate Cashman gave up
Probably nothing amazing. He famously refused to part with his upper tier prospects for Cole Castillo. Doesn’t like to move the ones he loves.
The ghost of Bowie Kuhn $$$ no competitive balance being maintained why have a commish
Relax, it’s Jazz Chisholm
Desperation move
Desperate times. It’s not like displacing Verdugo is a bad thing.
Replacement for Verdugo/Grisham or will he play 2B?
He might bounce around. He’s played SS, wonder if he has the arm for 3b?
He doesn’t have enough arm to play short so the left side of the infield is off limits
Eh, for the rest of 2024 I am not so sure. He should be the 2b in 2025 though.
x.com/maxtgoodman/status/1817667484285055081
Jazz will play 3b for the Yankees.
Good question, but he could be their second baseman next year should Torres go elsewhere.
Torres is gone at the end of the year even before this trade.
Exactly
Wait…the Yankees 20th ranked prospect HEADLINES the deal? That can’t be right…
In the recent mid-season update from FanGraphs he was ranked #5
Oh good call I didn’t think of the midseason update.
yeah he started in AA and hit around 289 w 16 HR. little lower since being called up to AAA. still couple years away, glad we didn’t give up anything more polished
He’s #4 according to Rotowire
It’s the Marlins. Asset management doesnt exist to them…and also Jazz is injury prone, can’t play defense anywhere, but 2b, and is an empty stat machine, and getting paid/likely to be paid way more than necessary in arbitration and anything else, moving forward
An empty stat machine. What does that mean? He puts up good stats when he us healthy. Lotta hate for jazz here. I don’t think he is the best but u guys talk like he should be in the minors.
I would guess they are done w Gleyber
Gleyber is hot right now, so probably not unless they are going to trade him.
Jazz could also get time in CF/LF and maybe 3b.
“Done with Gleybar”…Torres at the very least should be checking the specific details of his apartment lease although personally I don’t see Jazz as an upgrade at 2b or CF. I’m not really sure what Cash is thinking.
Surprised that Tanner Scott was not part of this deal.
I originally thought they would have aimed for Scott and Bell as opposed to Jazz. Separately, I thought they would have gone for both Lowe and Paredes on the Rays.
Sneaky good pickup, I think he’s got another gear that he will finally tap into now that he’s out of Miami.
His problem has been health. Hopefully hes not like another miami tranfer stanton
He’s going from an extreme pitchers park to an extreme hitters park. That’s going to help.
Ya definitely has some more flash in there…o you mean actual results…ya, good luck
Haha OK. So much hate? Why? He will do amazing in new York. This is what he was made for.
No hate; just reality.
Yep just reality. He seems to be doing just fine.
I’m one of the few who like to seem him play the game
Yes ,you are
Yep, he is a fun player to watch. I wonder what the hate stems from? Do u know ? U could guess but that would not do good here. They hate him because he is flashy? That doesn’t see like a reason to hate a guy. They HATE this dude? It’s strange.
Chisholm has lots of talent, but consistency and accountability aren’t his specialities!
Good player. Injury prone.
Seeking compensation for a potential injury? Call Ramirez, Ramirez and Serna.
holy overpay
Hardly an overpay, the top prospect in the deal isn’t likely to remain at catcher. Good chance that none of these guy do much in the majors.
Feels like the return is light. Especially after that catch he did. The dodgers couldn’t beat this offer.
Dodgers don’t take on headcases. Welcome to him.
Exactly why they passed up on Aroldis Chapman before he was traded to the Yankees
No, the dodgers prefer 370 million dollar players who are hurt in year one of a 12 year deal.
says the fan of the cheaters. injuries are part of the game genius.
Kiss our 2017 ring Mojo!! Ill shine it up for you tonight before we torch wrobleski!
typical ASStro
*cough* Bauer *cough*
Bro they signed Trevor Bauer
and Urias if you’re going that route. Mistakes have been made.
Trevor said hi
More like the Dodgers weren’t interested in beating that deal.
They would if asked.
Another panic move by Cashclown. Ramirez Is a better prospect than Austin Wells; likely was in line to be Trevino’s platoon partner in ‘25.
Chisholm, a disruptive presence in the clubhouse will not be much of an upgrade over Verdugo and forces Judge into becoming the regular left fielder.
Ramirez is a future DH and Wells has been on a tear for the past two months. You’re way off base
I like Ramirez plenty but Wells is the future starter not Trevino. Ramirez certainly could’ve been in the mix but Wells has found his stroke and looks great.
Juan Soto isn’t signed for 2025 who cares about next year?
Ramirez long path to catcher. But better 1b dh prospect than Santos. Teams must be really scared off by Jazz reputation. Good for Yankees. Winning baseball and him getting older can make him a better person. Looking like a possible trade bargain win.
This is why I wanted to trade him early last season, before people would figure out Jazz isn’t valuable
Curious to know what was given up. Maybe the Yankees will be a great fit for him and his personality.
It beats the putrid lineup behind Soto and Judge. They’re rolling out a lineup that isn’t even mid…
Hopefully Jazz injects life into a team that can’t catch a break.
I always seem to mispronounce his name Chaz Jisholm
Yanks gave up nothing for him
And some people wanted to give up Henry Davis for him
Lol
Over rated
Horrible move unless Torres and DJL are gone.
I’m disappointed that Tanner Scott wasn’t part of the deal but Jazz, if he can stay healthy, is a huge improvement over everyone in the Yankees’ infield not named Volpe.
Tanner Scott wouldn’t be “part” of the deal. He would BE the deal and require a TON more than this. Jazz would be a throw in.
Scott does comes with many days of team control left…
Literally has an OPS+ of 101 and wRC+ of 104. He’s between 1-4% better than league average in offense, a negative value fielder and not a good clubhouse guy. And he’s been playing in Miami with no media attention. Ground ball rate of 49%. Which is exactly what Verdugo is at
That’s a big improvement over DJL’s .495 OPS/43 OPS+.
I agree but Lemahieu is not going to sit for Chisholm. Unless they play Gleyber or Jazz at 3rd
Since June 28th, Gleyber has hit .329/.385/.514. so he’s not going anywhere.
Lmfao!!! DJ career is done. Do you even watch the games as he is mlb worst player today. Dead last and a DFA candidate
DJ has only played the corners this year. I doubt Gleyber is moving off second. Maybe they play Chisholm at 3rd but if not he isn’t really a replacement for Lemahieu
Maybe Torres is about to get shipped out of town in another trade. The maybes are endless!!!!!
Why wouldn’t they sit Lemahieu?
They will. But Jazz does not play 3rd. More moves are coming!
Isn’t he a K machine?
He’s a pretty good infielder actually. Poor outfielder. I assume Yanks will slide him in at 2B.
Yankees have to call up Jasson as soon as possible….
He will be recalled 1st week of August or sooner depending on Verdugo or Torres status with team at trade deadline
Jazz is absolutely awful at 2B
Ops isn’t everything. Being able to run and position flexibility have value. X3 years of it cost control.
It is to these haters. I have never seen people hate a guy so much for being….different I guess? Don’t know why the hate is so strong.
Thank you Yankees for helping the Pirates dodge a bullet. Whew, that was close.
Another guys that strikes out…except when he is on the IL. Really was hoping they’d get Paredes (but figure Rays wanted a much higher price).
There’s no doubt about that, along with first baseman Yandy Diaz.
A big name with league average stats. Perfect for the Yankees
League average is a good thing not a bad thing. He’s not an average fry cook at Burger King. He’s an average professional baseball player in the best league in the world.
With Soto and Judge consistently on base, a 3 run hr by Jazz will win NY a bunch of games. But the problem is the postseason. Will Jazz be able to make elite pitchers pay when the games matter? I have my doubts.
I’m pretty sure Jazz will be batting lead off.
Certainly a better option than the clowns they’ve been running out there that should not be used at the top of the order.
Because you need a player with an obp in the low .300s leading off.
Astros-
Please excuse me, because sometimes it’s tough to tell on the internet….but this is a joke right?
Is what a joke philly? Jazz has talent. Marlins park is a tough place to hit. Yankee stadium is a dream for lefty hitters just like minute maid is for righties. Jazz is going to hit a bunch of homers in that park. I just dont trust he will be what they need when it matters.
Ok, I still can’t tell.
I think he is taking the piss.
Unless those 3 run HRs come in garbage time, it won’t be happening
He is going to hit alot hr in that park. These people act like he is a terrible player. 162 he would average 25 and 25 more in that park. What do u people expect? He is not the best but he doesn’t suck. Can’t wait til he does his thing there. New York is a great place for him.
Never said he does; I said everything he has ever done, except less than a handful of hits, has been in garbage time
He seems to be doing good in New York so far. I mean, everyone here said he was terrible… now I don’t know what to think.
Gabe krapler getting that deal done.
I imagine J.D. Davis’ time in the Bronx is up.
Chisholm and Verdugo in the same clubhouse should be–interesting…
Jahmi Jones has entered the chat…
Sad pathetic Yankees desperately trying to buy their problems away. Enjoy Year 15 in a row of no World Series appearances you clowns.
Whatever you say, Mick.
Your point doesn’t really belong in this conversation. Jazz isn’t expensive
So Puk brings back a better prospect than Jazz? Make it make sense.
Extra year of control for Puk and he’s cheaper
Ramirez far better than either of the Puk trade prospects. I would say more valuable than both of them combined.
“Back a better prospect”…It’s just one man’s opinion, but Puk is a significantly more useful player than is Jazz Chisholm.
3 innings a week vs 6 entire games.
Haha no he is not
It already makes sense…Just leave the sentence alone, and it’s fine
I guess the Reds asked them to actually pay a fair price for India? Classic in Yankees.
Maybe they like Jazz better. He can also play the outfield.
Ya, he can definitely “play” the OF
You must not have seen Verdugo trip over his own feet and cost the Yankees a win. The bar is low. India has zero career starts in the OF. So Yeah, he can play the OF.
…Jazz has almost/actually has injured himself and/or other people several times since he got moved out there. There was a few weeks mid season last year he started to look slightly better, but then has looked just as bad as day 1 otherwise, like he never stepped foot on the grass in his life. He is going to hurt people out there. He can “play” the OF,but he can’t play the OF…
You must not have seen Verdugo trip over his own feet and cost the Yankees a win.
Jazz is not a 2B. I mean you can put him there, but he is terrible on the dirt. Not much better in the OF. He barely gets on base with a OBP in the lows .320s. He made the all start game because the Marlins had to have a representative. He has a quirky name. So there is that.
He is the worst baseball player I’ve ever seen. The hate is strong over here.
Jazz has plenty of raw power that should translate well at Yankee Stadium. His speed will also be a nice addition. Solid move, I’m just surprised this wasn’t a bigger deal involving one of the Marlins relievers as well
Plus despite the fact that his overall numbers aren’t great, he has thrived in clutch situations.
It also sounds like Jazz is going to be the leadoff hitter so batting in front of Soto and Judge should give him plenty of opportunities to hit
Just what we need…..an all show gum flapper who is limping to a .198 BA this month and who strikes out a ton.
Now we’ll let Parades go to a competitor to keep S Jones who cant hit with a snow shovel in AA at age 23.
FIRE CASHMAN
Yankee fans don’t want a GM who used to be with the LOL team.
Paredes is ok but should never get the #1 prospect from any team.
Martian is the top prospect. He’s a top 25 overall. Jones is around 75.
“He’s a gum flapper” tell me your not a 60 year old white guy without telling me.
I’m not….but not everyone is a gen Z tool box on here either.
I agree. Jazz is doing pretty good for your team right? What are the youngsters saying about him? What’s the haps?
Jazz may be overrated, but unless prospects #2 and 3 are a lot better than I’m expecting, that’s a nothing return. Ramirez is not a major league catcher.
I agree. He’s only thrown out 10% of SB attempts this year. Hasn’t even proven anything in AAA yet. Underwhelming return unless the other 2 are better.
Say goodbye to the dreadlocks and the blue hair.… And the lackadaisical attitude
Yes, I must admit, that is one thing I like about the Yankees.
Gosharoonie, here I thought every top trade prospect was going to the Dodgers.
Gleyber is definitely being traded. He can’t play 3B or 1B.
They need DH spot for Stanton.
They could play Jazz in CF 80% of time and keep Gleyber but I doubt it.
SEA, PIT, CLE, MIL interested – maybe LAD?
Torres to Dodgers is a move i see happening
Is he what David Justice was in 2000? We will now find out…
Agustin Ramirez was born a day before 9/11.
Oh my god! Does anyone know where he was the day after being born? Very suspicious.
Another amazing movie by Cashman for a injury prone player, it’s great when you get a player like that while trading the only catcher in your whole organization who can actually hit but what do I know I don’t have a college degree I’m an idiot
Cashman directs movies now?
I think more like an EP.
“All That Jazz” he ain’t all that. Needs to grow up
But he’s got that stink at the plated rhythm. And he snaps on the 2 and 4. Then he takes five to recover. It’ll miles for Davis now, bye bye JDBird.
MLB Network’s Adnan Virk on Jazz Chisholm: “More style than substance”.
That will get him points at the old boys club meetings.
Horrible trade. Gets injured like Giancarlo, strikes out like Joey Gallo, hits like Harrison Bader. Doesn’t even have a position right now? I see him adding little to the offense, while wasting 3 prospects and spending the next 2 years waiting for him to “turn a corner”.
Jazz Chisoholm – SEVERLY overrated.
Does that make him a cut above?
Lmao
This is a big deal. And I’m curious how many times the Marlins and Yankees have traded.
There was a handful of teams that if traded to Chisolm would break out with and this is one of them. His overall number don’t show it but it already seems like he’s always doing something in the box scores. I was hoping the Cardinals realized he would be a great fit for the next few years but Mozaliak is an idiot.
I wanted Chisholm on the Cardinals but the conservative front office and fan base wouldn’t be able to handle him.
He may only have like 3 hits I’ve ever seen that actually mattered. Most everything he does is in garbage time
That being said, he could be helped by Little League Park and the short porch, so that could be interesting to see, though that same area is the shortest part of Marlins Park as well
Empty stats finally gone. I remember having conversations with a couple people in the Marlins FO around when they traded for him, and everything I said at the time happened, even theoversensationalized things i said in frustration…Great job guys. Real great job
Got to see a historical rare moment where Jazz did something that mattered in a game for the 3rd time in his entire career, a few days ago, so a good way for him to go out as a Marlin
Marlins apparently looking for all the 2nd baseman for the last 101 years. Can’t have enough of those for them…As I said previously, it’s obvious they’re desperate for offensive impact of any kind, especially c9rner bats, and the returns they’ve gotten so far, and their drafting, reflects that
I’ll wait for the last piece on info going back, and ultimately, I’m glad to have Jazz off my team, but they once again handled this situation as poorly as possible, and asset management is just not in the Marlins vernacular, regardless of who is in their front office
These people should have been moved by last November, at the latest, like I said back then…
Please…please let 1-2 of 5hese guys they’ve gotten be something…I’m not being greedy; just give us 1 guy…
…real quick though, I will admit when I was checking the Yankees prospects 2 weeks ago, Serna stood put to me as interesting, but I dismissed it b/c he’s another 2nd baseman
Now u have that terrible player gone, there is no reason for Miami to even have a television deal. Thank god
Nobody is saying he’s terrible; it makes zero sense for the Marlins to have him on their team. If you dispute that, I don’t know what organization you’ve watched
I’m thinking no matter what happens with the Yanks the rest of the season Aaron Boone won’t be back as manager. It’s not just Yankees fans bashing on him but national media. George Steinbrenner would’ve got rid of him 3 years ago..
I’m going to throw this out there although it will never happen. Yankees have way too many holes to fill to be a WS team this year. Can you imagine if they do what they did with Chapman and put SOTO on the market? They could ask for a king’s ransom, load up on young talent AND sign him back next year to make a REAL run.
Again, will never happen…..but what would Soto bring back?
Is he better than Torres?Doesn’t seem like they gave up much?
On a more realistic note……TB will need a 2B next year as Lowe is a free agent. With Jazz having a few years of control and a cheap contract….may he be part of a deal to TB for Parades and Fairbanks? (he said…..hoping)
Lowe has 2 options after this year. Rays will pick up next year (10.5 mil/1 mil buyout). Jazz will probably get 5-6 mil in arb for 2025. So, doesn’t save them much.
Sorry, but I don’t think your wish will come true.
No way Rays pay $10m for Lowe after the year he’s having. they hardly pay $10m for anyone!
Brandon Lowe has a 143 ops+ and 1.4 WAR in 56 games.
If your scenario happens they pay Lowe $1 million and lesser 2b $5-6 million. They will
pick up the option because they can trade Lowe and he could easily get a better deal that 2/21 mil (his options) on the free agent market.
If he is a lefty,He will have 25 homeruns like Gardner and some other jokers did in that park.Big strong guys in a small park.
Such a weak return. Braves should have easily beaten that
I think that A. Ramirez was the prize for the Marlins, he seems like a legit Catcher with upside.
The potential gem though is the 2nd Ramirez in this deal, 2-3 seasons away, and he could be the steal of this deal.
A legit catcher that can’t throw anyone out or play catcher…basically a bat only potential 1b/dh they have “playing” catcher
The Yankees are trading for the possibility that Jazz can be the impact bat many hoped he would be- maybe a change of scenery and a few strong hitters in the lineup will help him. Maybe not. Yankees fans will let him know soon enough if he’s helping or hurting the team.
The Yankees have very good depth at Catcher in the upper levels of the minors, so Ramirez is expendable.
I can appreciate the trade, Chisholm is essentially Torres’s replacement.
Personally, I prefer that the Yankees simply bench DJ, and give his playing time to Oswaldo Cabrera. The Yankees need him to gain confidence, and his price is affordable for the next 2-3 seasons.
They should focus on bullpen upgrades, and in 1.5-2 weeks, call Jasson up for good to replace Verdugo.
Verdugo was brought in to be the rotating 4th OFer and thats a fine spot for him to be in, injuries have him filling in as a starter but you’d call up Jasson to assume a starting role, not Verdugos
Jasson is gonna be the starting LF’er.
I don’t think the Yankees shift Judge to LF, which is more expansive than CF in Yankee Stadium.
All things considered, the Yankees did well here. We have control of Jazz for 2 more years after this. Hate to part with Agustin given our catching situation behind Wells, but Naevaez looks like he will eclipse Trevino on the depth chart. Overall, solid trade for the Yankees
Wait, we need Tanner Scott too!!!
Odd move the acquire an overrated neverwas/hasbeen when Jeter Downs was already in the organization for free.
Hahaha jeter downs. Listen to this guy everyone. He should be a real gm any day now
Didn’t these guys get the memo that they’re suppose to wait until Tuesday for all of this. It’s like everyone is opening their Christmas packages early!
My hot take is that I like the deal. Jazz is a fairly speedy guy and a left-handed threat. He could provide the spark that the team needs to get out of this funk. Not to mention the fact that he’s versatile, and the Yankees love that ability.
Since Gleyber is a free agent at the end of this season and he’s had a terrible walk year, I suspect Jazz might become our new 2B in 2025.
This trade does not prevent the Yankees from getting Rengifo or Chapman either, btw.
I watch a lot of Marlin games, Jazz has terrible baseball instincts. He is also miserable at 2B. Yankee fans will sour quickly on Jazz.
The Marlins will sour quickly on those 3 suspects….I mean prospects
“he’s versatile” ?? yes he is bad at OF and 2B.
Last I checked his defensive stats are quite good at 2B. A little suspect at CF but he’s not awful
But can he pitch ?
could see verdugo being traded for a reliever
C for Miami. Won’t punish them for being in love with massive power weak defenders. Ramirez 1 crushes the ball. Better prospect than both the Puk trade guys together. Not looking liking a plus defender at catcher. Can he stick at catcher maybe. If not you are looking at 1b dh. Ramirez #2 is a really promising low level bat. So promising he should easily make top 30. Great approach for so early. Projectible. Serna least exciting prospect but on path to the show.
B for NY. Didn’t give up a arm. Didn’t give up a premium position. They know their prospects well. I don’t think they trade someone they see as a all star. Think they can get the best out of Jazz. I imagine they are thrilled with this trade.
ramirez won’t stick at catcher but he has serious power
Might get good enough to be dh back up catcher. He has a lot to improve. I am not a catching expert so can’t say for certain. Henry Davis was as awful a catcher you see. Went to drive line in the winter and all the sudden wasn’t awful and if his bat would play he could catch a game or 2 a week. Ramirez has the arm and some framing so it’s a foundation to work with.
Have you ever seen Jazz play? He is terrible at 2B. He is impatient at the plate and generally has terrible baseball instincts. The Yankees wanted a name and they got it. But Jazz is not good at baseball.
I have. Sounds like you haven’t though.
Not good at baseball. Bob, some loser from Iowa said jazz is not got at baseball. There it is
so did jesus montero
Jazz was always fools gold. Good luck Marlins with the return.
Nice Swipe by the Yanks
Trent Grisham is horrible
Big bust
Haha if you think Jazz is anything but a name, you haven’t seen him play much. He is god awful.
Obviously you haven’t seen those 3 “prospects” play much
Abraham Ramirez could well be the key here. He looks like a top-notch prospect.
Yankees need pitching. This might make them better but haven’t they learned that adding superstars doesn’t always transfer to wins? It’s Yankees grabbing another big name but not fixing their key issues.
And Chisholm is very injury prone…
Yeah, I remembered when they tried to have All Stars at every position, but did it lead to championships? The answer is no, because no matter how good they are, it’s not that simple.
You’re talking about the mid 2000’s? When they would routinely have near the best record in the AL only to get bounced out first round? You really going to say that’s worse than their current team? They’re lucky to grab a wild card and how far would they expected to go?
Yankees haven’t even been to the WS in 15 years. I’d say their current model isn’t working…
Jazz is not going to make them better. In 3 weeks Yankee fans will want him ran out of town. He is awful.
Let’s see if u know baseball as well as u tell yourself, Bob. Let’s see how he does and how much u actually know
Please look at their offense. Who’s above average beyond Judge & Soto? Yeah they need some pitching upgrades but their offense is the #1 issue by far
The thing is, Chisholm is pretty good but not the best hitter and often injured
I have to believe that Miami had better offers on the table
Is he playing SS?
What’s the plan play Jazz in the Outfield which makes Dominez/Jones expendable or the infield which makes Pereza/Vivas expendable. Either way hopefully he’s the new lead off hitter. Bat Volpe second and move everyone down Soto #3 and Judge #4. Line up looking better
You definitely don’t want Jazz at 2B. He is terrible on the dirt.
Terrible would be an upgrade as compared to Gleyber…..can’t believe its not that long ago that teams were killing themselves to trade with the Cubs for this guy……he supposedly had all the instincts to play either the left or right side with skill……$10 cent head and no baseball acumen at all…..
Remember that pretending Spencer Jones is remotely good.
When I see the price and it’s far lower than expected, I remember what a bad organization the Pirates are!
Impressive haul for the “Most overrated” player in MLB…..LOL Yankees
total waste of good prospects. Jazz does nothing to move the needle.
There was one GROSS Understatement in this article:
“Gleyber Torres is having a relative down season . . .”
“A RELATIVELY DOWN SEASON”? LOL – LOL – LOL!!!
Torres leads MLB 2Bs in ERRORS with 12, and he has the WORST FIELDING of ANY 2B in MLB who’s played more than 35 games.
Torres has:
* Dropped ROUTINE POP UPs
* Failed to back-up 2nd on several steals, allowing the runner to take an extra base on overthrows, and
* Failed to run after pop ups, causing Aaron Judge to risk injury trying to catch a ball that Torres should have EASILY caught.
On the plus side (sarcasm), Torres has Absolutely Sucked at bat for more than 95% of the season, only waking up some recently after being Humiliated by being benched several times for lack of effort & gross fielding errors.
Saying “Torres is having a relative down season” is like saying the Captain of the Titanic had ” a relative down” day when the Titanic sank & 1,517 people died.
Yankee fans are going to be disappointed with this trade.
Marlins fans are going to be very disappointed with this trade
Does this make the Yanks out on Bellinger now?
This guy only cares about one thing and it’s not for any team he plays for…the Marlins scored and the Yankees just traded for a massive headache
Apparently, Cashman can’t sand the thought of not having an a-hole in the infield if he trades Gleyber.
So, he replies 1 a-hole with another a-hole.
Hopefully, this a-hole can at least hit & field.
But they should have just called up Durbin & handed him 2B. He’s a Joy to watch play, but nitwit Cashman won’t give a great httter who ALWAYS Hustles a chance because he’s only 5’6″ . . .
And EVERYBODY Knows that a 5’6″ player can’t possibly make it in MLB; isn’t that right, Altuve? ;-(
Wait til Jazz finds out he can’t dye his hair in pinstripes
Hope this backfires on the Stanks, but it does increase their floor no matter what.
you are a joke or is it stoke
The Yankees absolutly fleeced the Marlins. Jazz Chisholm automatically becomes their third best position player. Cashman gave up nothing to get a good player. I don’t know how teams keep falling for this nonsense
You don’t know how? Simple – it’s because you’re an idiot and have one the dumbest, illogical views of baseball I’ve ever encountered
Sarcasm, right ?
Jazz stinks. And he’s an immature clubhouse cancer.
Might be the flashiest Yankee squad.
This dude is perfect for the Yankees. lol
Nobody wanted him because he’s toxic in the clubhouse. If he succeeds great move.. if he fails and is worth anything trade him. Overall good move for the Yankees. Glad the Mets didn’t bite.
Marlins, don’t know what the hell they’re doing. How the hell did they ever W 2 championships?
Yanks had to do something, while it was not the move I expected it does help them. They are barely scoring unless Judge and Soto are at the dish. The rest of that lineup has been trash except for Rice who’s been a nice surprise. Chaz will be an upgrade from Torres at 2B. This move should immediately trigger the Yanks to trade Gleyber. He’s still young with good upside but he’s been struggling in NY. Put a package together to SF for Chapman to address there other huge issue at 3B. Because it would be the proper thing to do but they won’t. They’ll play Chaz at 3B like idiots.
Chaz will be an upgrade from Torres at 2B.
===========================
Maybe, maybe not.
Over the past 2.5 years, both have identical bWAR/650, with Gleyber having a higher total by virtue of more games.
Jazz is having a better year this year, but Gleyber is the hotter player. You get more control, but I’m guessing that both players run about even the rest of the way. Nor do I like the fit. If he doesn’t play 2nd, the he duplicates Grisham who duplicated Verdugo.
That said, your idea on Chapman is perfect. Having him behind Soto and Judge would be huge.
The Pirates missed out on Jazz. Overall, I don’t think it’s their year. I would prioritize who is going to be Rule V eligible and not protected on the roster this off season and trade them away so they get someone decent and under team control.
This is the MLB version of a square peg and round hole.
Jazz doesn’t fit with the Yankees at all! Poor defense in center, poor on base, hasn’t played second in how long? But hey, he occasionally runs into a home run.
I do think he and Stroman in the same locker room would be fun.
Does it fit? Two games for home runs looks like a pretty good fit so far . Only time will tell no one is saying that he belongs in The same group as judge or Soto but it’s a good start
Hmmm? Marlins acquiring some thumpers who are almost MLB-ready. It’ll be interesting to see what they do with De La Cruz, Sanchez and Burger…and their SPs. Roster isn’t that bad next year if they keep the pieces in play and add those younger pieces. And we’ll still have the same problem with a whole new cast – bullpen.
What did I tell you back in Pctober/November? Should have traded people when they could have
Clearly we’re desperate for offensive impact/corner bats, as has been the approach the last 1.5 years to hope someone works out
Hopefully they finally let some of the young infielders play, but they already lost a bunch of those guys, and they shouldbhave been seeing what they had over a year ago
Finally called up Xavier Edwards 14 months after I was saying they should/was obvious he should have been (especially b/c we had nobody at his positions)…See what you have before going into an offseason
Yeah, I remember. To be fair, I think we all were stuck with the previous GM who was stubbornly set in what she wanted to do…that is when it didn’t get in the way of her self-promo stuff.
I’m curious to see how all this turns out now. While I have and may be bashing the Arraez trade for a long time, Bendix return for Puk gave me a little more confidence because, as much as I like Puk, that felt like an overpay by the D-Backs. And we’re seeing, that despite Gordon not lighting the world on fire, we got the better end of that Okert trade as well.
I hope we trade all of our relievers for as many young prospects and lottery tickets as possible. Hopefully Bendix acquires some young reliever possibilities with our trade chips that have lesser value.
One thing will be interesting for next year is the fact that, due to injuries, we’re going to end up keeping our most valued part of the team – our SPs. I know it’s an easy bet for people to count us out for next year, but if we have our pitchers, and they’re halthy, and we strike on some of these MLB-ready guys, .500 is in the realm of possibility next year…assuming Bendix doesn’t put together a bullpen that is just as implosive as Ng’s.
I actually was somewhat ok with the Puk return, until I remembered he had way more team control left than I was thinking…
The Arraez deal came way too late, and then you couldn’t chance it getting worse around what we have here, but you hope to get slightly better back in return, and obviously, you don’t want those guys falling off a cliff/getting injured literally immediately, but maybe that’s different if he’s traded back in November
Regardless, at least there is seemingly a direction, which is what I was saying
Going into next year, you add a couple of low/nothing cost veterans/flyers/former top prospects in a couple of areas, a couple of bullpen arms, and then hope the arms come back healthy/strong early, then trade them in early-mid May, then trade the veterans you signed
